"Do you ever think what you would be if the Commission didn't take you in?"
"Dead." Hawks didn't even skip a beat as he took another bite, and god wasn't that depressing.
Kaina gave him a playful shove, watching as the crimson wings fluttered out to keep him from falling off the side of the building. "You little shit, give me the fantasy."

Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. Just their luck, she assumed. Of course, it would pick tonight of all nights to go out. The coldest night they’ve had so far this season and they don’t have heat. Ugh.
It was five in the morning and it was also so incredibly cold during these winter months. There was a chill that ran down her spine as she sat up and scratched at her head, stretching and shivering as she let out a huff, seeing her own breath, to which she grew annoyed. She hugged herself, rubbing her hands up and down her arms to try and get warm, to feel warm, though of course not even that worked.

They had never actually met one another, never interacted outside of talking through the shared wall between them, but somehow it all fell into place. The conversations came so naturally, and they had become a familiar, comforting presence.
And it wasn’t just because there wasn’t anything else to do while one spent their life behind bars in Tartarus.
The conversations were few and far between with other inmates. Many kept to themselves, and others found a great interest in harassing the guards, which always ended up with someone getting hurt. So the fact that the two of them had managed to find each other and share these somewhat normal moments together was nice.

That’s why Lady Nagant has a new mission: Befriend Miruko, find her weaknesses, and persuade or blackmail her into joining any sort of group where her intensity and out-of-the-box heroing could be tempered.
The mission seems lighter than Lady Nagant’s usual confidential missions, but there’s a catch: If she can’t get Miruko under control, she’ll have to kill her. And unfortunately, Miruko’s not making it easy for her to avoid the terminal option.

To Lady Nagant, the commission was her whole life, they made that very clear. Resigned to her fate, she could do nothing but obey, despite the guilt of her actions and orders that was eating her alive. But what if an encounter with an up-and-coming, elusive drug lord were to change that, and push her down a new path in life? To offer her freedom and the chance to make her life her own again?

I mean I'm not telling anyone they can't ship reylo but we live in a world that's so drenched in racism, it's impossible for anyone to escape it and we should be unpacking that stuff. Especially when so many people "just happen" to find the white villain more attractive than the poc heroes.

Yeah like... I find Kylo Ren interesting, too. I relate to him a lot, as I used to be that self-defeating dweeb with bottomless anger and no impulse control. (As opposed to the present time, when I am a self-defeating dweeb with less anger and better impulse control. Character Development(tm)!) I have no issues with people liking him, shipping him, whatever. You do you. But we’re supposed to believe that the white characters are the most popular in every fandom because they’re more interesting? Riiiiight.
I mean, I had to consciously face and unpack my own racism in this fandom, and I still do it constantly. Realizing I harbored unconscious racist biases wasn’t fun, but I did it because, like you said, the default in our society is being racist and it takes conscious effort to undo that conditioning. If someone denies that this is true of them or don’t want to take the effort, that’s fine. I don’t know them, maybe they’re that amazing person who is unaffected by societal racism yay them! But telling me the effect doesn’t exist when I’ve experienced it myself and see it every day in this fandom? Fuck that noise.

Well, if I ever do manage to get around to building an IG army, I’m definitely going to lean away from the worst totalitarian bullshit. It’s still ‘grimdark’ if you’ve got a setting as war-torn as 40k is. It’s just easier to sympathize with less awful humans facing down a galaxy full of external awful. So that’s kind of a long winded way of saying “No commissars.”

All she remembered, all she could think of, was Nana.
The very vampire standing on the next roof. The same vampire that had evaded her stake for gods knew how long, only for them to face off again tonight. There was not much to say anymore. All words had been said a long time ago and yet, when the wind caressed Kaina’s cheek, playing with her hair, she couldn’t help but speak up: “So we meet again.”
