@carrymelikeimcute I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR SEVENTEEN MILLION YEARS "oh he's so rude to the crew" they're not HIS crew!! He's been told by Edward to kill them! Why on God's Green Earth would you risk getting emotionally attached to people you are fully expecting to kill within the fortnight??? He has NO clue, no indication, that these are his people, beyond perhaps whoever's competent enough to be poached, which in piratical terms is pretty much limited to Buttons and Jim: an useful sailor and an useful killer. When they become his crew? As in actually his crew?? Look what he does then. Look at what happens then.

In S1E2, Fang and Ivan weren't following his orders in that island because they're in any way scared of him. It's because he's competent and he's earned his rank and if you respect him he protects you. We just don't see a lot of that in season 1 because his crew is the Queen Anne's crew. Hysterically enough, he doesn't even treat the Revenge crew particularly badly?? He doesn't cut rations, he doesn't order lashes, he doesn't punish anyone, he just sort of... yells all the time. Which honestly, with the amount of stress he's being put through? That would be fairly normal even if they were his crew, but they aren't. They're dead men walking, from where he's standing. And yet he's not violent; he's just pragmatic.

Look at what he puts himself through for them once they become his crew.

Rewatching S1 and that first episode where Ed and his crew are interacting with Stede's guys hits really different when you internalise that Izzy was fully expecting that he'd be ordering these guys' murders once the ship was fixed up.

Like, 'oh he's being so rude and not making friends' um....there's a reason.
