[Warning: violence, loss of self, dehumanization]
Fight. Bleed. Ignore the noise. Kill. Survive. Stay out of the fog. The fog makes it worse.
The fiend trembles with pain and rage. Bodies fall, only to flake away into purple dust that burns its eyes and eats its mind.
Don't look up. Don’t look at the void. The void looks back and sees it and is all around it and is inside it.
Its rage overflows and it burns like a blood-colored flame. It rains destruction on the simulated horde, crystalized hatred and agony pouring from the arm that doesn’t belong to it.
It might be screaming. It can't hear over the noise in its head.
The fighting stops. The red bleeds out of its vision. For a moment, it is empty and quiet and still.
Then the orb beeps and fighting starts again.
The ally is back. Freight. The fiend doesn’t have a name, but it feels right that she does. It doesn’t remember what Freight means. The jellyfish doesn’t mind. The name stuck.
She watches it fight from outside the bubble. She lingers in the fog, wrapping toxic tentacles around enemies too far for it to reach. She knows it hates to chase them out into the poisonous air. The orb accepts her kills as the fiend’s.
Pause. Follow the orb. Heal.
It goes to activate the orb again. It cannot stop it cannot stay still it must keep going. It doesn't remember why.
Freight pulls it back. Stop fighting. Rest. It squirms in her hold. Its head rings and pressure builds and its claws glow with unreleased energy.
She wraps a cool limb around its head and drapes another over its shoulders. The noise stops and the rage drains out and it can breathe. It is quiet. There is nothing alive in the simulacrum except for the fiend and Freight.
And then there is sound. Not from it. Not from the ally. Not from the orb. Somewhere else. It stands and looks out across the simulated plain. Green light cuts through the abyss, lightning arcing into the sky from a distant battle.
It stands. This is the first time it has seen anything like this. It needs to know. It brushes Freight's arms away and she follows as it throws itself into the fog.
Outside of protection, the void digs into it. It burns all the way to its heart where poison has wormed inside over days, months, years of exposure. It wrestles with the pain, forcing the corruption in reverse, healing the damage it caused. It rails against the injustice of the thing that has twisted him beyond recognition, invaded his body and mind and soul. It has become a part of him, it cannot hold him back anymore.
Freight warbles behind him as he nears his destination. A safe zone. There is another safe zone. The circle is filled with strange wriggling things that call to him. Some kind of distant familiarity. He has seen them before.
The moment of clarity is broken by the roar of a great beast. The fiend turns away from the circle and fights. It's sloppy. It can't focus on healing and battle at the same time. Freight covers his weakness, tearing apart anything that comes close with the ferocity that evades it now.
It doesn't realize when the battle is over. A voice is yelling. It has been outside for too long. Every inch of it burns. It hisses through its teeth and turns back to safety.
"Stay back."
The figure in the circle stops it dead. The source of the green light. The familiar voice. The cannons on the person's back are raised and ready to fire. It does not care. This person is not a threat.
"Maglev. Discharge."
The figure points at one of the eels drifting in lazy circles around the safe zone. The creature does not heed the order. The fiend does not move, save for its incessant trembling.
"What are you?"
It tilts its head. It was someone, once. It was someone to this man. This man is someone to it.
Who did it used to be? Who is he? He can't remember. He taps his claws on his helmet, the rhythmic sound ringing in the crack that exposed his only remaining eye to the air. For a moment, it drowns out the buzzing in his head. It is enough.
"Emmmmettt," he croaks. It's the only thing he's ever said outside of Freight's name. His voice is quiet and harsh like the death rattles of the countless creatures he has killed. The fog threatens to steal the word away from him, just as it has stolen everything else. It fails.
Emmet falters. His weapons fall back to standby and he rushes forward, dragging the fiend into the bubble. The relief is so powerful, he shudders as they cross the threshold.
"Ingo? Ingo is it really you? I can't-" Emmet babbles and holds him in his arms.
Ingo. He is not Ingo. He is Ingo. He doesn't know. Emmet decides for him.
"Have you been here this whole time?"
He doesn't understand, but he nods. He manages to whisper something that sounds vaguely like "always".
Emmet is crying. Ingo-Not-Ingo brings his left hand up and rests it on Emmet's helmet. He feels like there shouldn't be anything in the way. He should be able to touch him. But he is grateful for the barrier. His claws leave shallow scratches on the hard surface.
Emmet puts a hand over his. It's cool to the touch.
"I am Emmet. I found you. I am going to get you out."
He doesn’t know what “out” is, but he feels something when he hears the words, the conviction in Emmet's voice. For the first time since he can remember, he feels hope.

Things that happened during those 24hrs before The Battle at Camp Jupiter after The Dark Prophecy
The loving, joyful, teary Hazel-Leo-Frank group hug we deserved and didn’t get in BoO
Leo gets an actual tour of the city
It’s full of battle strategizing and Frank prodding at him to make sure he’s actually real, but still
Reyna gets a good look at Festus and her respect for Leo goes up a little more
Leo finally gets a close look at the metal dogs and falls in love
Her dogs go batshit over the dragon, barking their heads off in excitement like ‘Dog! Dog! Big Dog! Friend!’
Festus is confused but pleased
Leo and Reyna watch on and Leo goes, “Guess we’re co-parents now”
Reyna relents a smile
Hazel knows she’s supposed to be a dignified centurion, but she’s also a kid who loves fast things and she’s like, “Dammit I’m gonna fly on this dragon” and invents an errand to take him
Leo gives her that ‘you like Krabby Patties don’t you Squidward’ look, and she isn’t even ashamed and it’s Good(tm)
Frank kisses Leo, because he didn’t before the last major battle and he’s not making that mistake again
Leo catches on fire and this time Frank doesn’t recoil because he’s got nothing to worry about.

HES SO HONEST. he’s been honest with everything he’s told her. Can’t wait to see it on his face how much it’s going to break his heart when he lies to her. A big lie, too. To see the turmoil on his face of “do I tell the truth and she hates me” or “do I lie and hope she never finds out so that we can stay this way”

The next episode drops in less than 12 hours… that means the people around me have but a few hours to prepare themselves for my journey from “it’s coming it’s coming it’s coming” to “it’s here it’s here it’s here” because the second the episode drops I’m only thinking about their journey from the tunnel to the sirens to the manticore to the hair makeover to the volcano eruption to the funeral to the offer from Artemis to the styx scene to the stabbing to the immortality offer to the ‘I only remember one name’ to the reunion in HoO to the fucking fall into Tartarus.
It all starts so dam soon. So so soon.
Percabeth will be the death of me.

We didn't get to see Camp Jupiter's alarms blare when a gleaming mass is spotted in the sky, streaking right toward them. We didn't see the crowds gathering in the streets of the city, the soldiers in the barracks moving to gather their weapons, weary because haven't they dealt with enough?
We didn't see the Praetors of New Rome and their most trusted legionaires step out of the shadows of the Senate House as the flying shape resolved into the form of a dragon. We didn't see the familliarity of that dragon register on the faces of the soldiers who had fought at Camp Half Blood last August.
We didn't see the Praetors stop in shock as the word spread through the crowd, questions and doubts and disbelief.
We didn't see Reyna's lips part in astonishment, a rare sight as she’s not easily surprised, and in the same breath ordering her people to stand down. We didn't see Hazel let out a joyous cry, hands flying to cover her mouth as she mentally calls for her steed so she can meet her friend as soon as he lands.
And we didn't see Frank stand rooted to the spot, eyes fixed on the figure that's little more than a speck sitting astride the dragon's back, his heart thundering in his ribs, his throat, the entirety of his body.
We didn’t see him, never once looking away from the sky as he steps foward, pushing through the crowd, moving with more and more urgency as the truth hits him, until he's running, sprinting, lifting off the ground, barely conscious of shifting his form because all he can think is that he can't lose one more moment on this earth that rider died to defeat, not when that rider is alive and here and in reach.
We didn't see the rider register the shape moving to intercept him, the resignation for a fight before the recognition of that giant eagle that he knows so well, the blinding grin as the eagle swoops in so close they should all go tumbling out the sky.
We didn't see the eagle morph back into a teenage boy who has missed Leo Valdez so fiercely that he thought the feeling alone could break open the surface of the sleeping world, who doesn't have to miss him anymore, because Leo is pulling his still shifting form onto the seat behind him.
We didn't see Frank Zhang in the open sky for the first time in his original form, or how he barely registers the sensation because he's too focused on wrapping himself around the boy he'd feared he had truly lost, head buried against his shoulder, arms tight around his torso, Leo's own holding just as tight to him, to one of the main reasons he was able to go through with his sacrifice in the first place.
We didn't get to see that.

i doubt anyone will see this but i’m kinda confused i read pjo and hoo and a lot of the accompanying books like demigod files and the gree gods or whatever but not trials of apollo (so this might be a really dumb question) but i remember percy mentioning in greek gods or greek heroes (i forgot which) that they had monthly argo 2 reunion parties or smth? so wouldn’t that mean that by the time leo gets back from ogygia and to camp he should’ve gone to those so he would’ve seen jason grace??? but everyone always talks about how it’s so sad that they missed each other by days so im just confused and i would appreciate if anyone could clarify this for me so i don’t have to read the worst book ever (burning maze 💀)

Junon and Nibelheim Tifa symbolism through Rebirth lore
This tumblr post is actually further expansion from this twitter thread I made on the relationship between Tifa and Junon that I've noticed. Now that Rebirth is out.... hoo boy idk if I'm overthinking this or if the devs are just this big-brained. Spoiler alert for Rebirth, OBVIOUSLY. You have been warned.
Part 1: Phoenix, Deity of Junon Region
So to begin with, I'd like to draw your attention to what actually first attracted my attention to the possibly deliberate symbolism of Junon: the combination of the regional deity (Phoenix) and the regional chocobo (Belle the mountain chocobo).
As is obvious to any Final Fantasy fan by now, Phoenix is the summon of fire and life/rebirth, two themes important to Cloud and Tifa, both of whose childhoods "died" in the Nibelheim fire and massacre five years ago and yet "reborn", or rather survived, from the ashes of their fallen hometown because of their promise and bond with each other. They are each other's proofs they are who they are: Cloud and Tifa from Nibelheim. As a sea-facing town with an underwater reactor (even Under Junon is named "Sea Dragon Square"), wouldn't it have been more thematically appropriate to have Junon worship either the Leviathan (admittedly Leviathan is the guardian deity of Wutai in FF7 lore, but Wutai was pushed to pt3, and it didn't stop Leviathan from being a Chadley-earned summon in Remake either) or Shiva deities (which is the summon you get in OG Junon from Priscilla) instead of Phoenix, unless the switch was a deliberate narrative choice? After all, as I've posted in my original Twitter thread, Junon is the first place Real Cloud truly tries hard to "awaken" SOLDIER Cloud into speaking with Tifa. This is translated in Rebirth into Cloud and Tifa's reconciliation after their falling out at Kalm, and Tifa's relationship wheel being the non-optional, story-mandated dialogue choice in this chapter. The Rebirth-themed summon in the Rebirth-named game being set in the Junon region over all other regions? HMMMMMMMM. (And nobody better forget that Mr Dolphin <-> Tifa's limit break Dolphin Blow parallel either ;) )
Also, OG callback: Phoenix summon was actually obtained from Fort Condor in OG, and guess what huge ass creature immediately appeared the moment the party exited the Junon-side entrance of Mythril Mines? Aye, the Giant Condor. The protorelic sidequest in Junon is also linked to the Fort Condor minigame (a variation of the boardgame from FF7 Remake Intermission) that specifically chose to magick both Cloud and Tifa (as well as Barret) in to do battle. And of course, the "Dreaming of Blue Skies" Tifa-related sidequest in Junon region involves baiting the Giant Condor with bovine meat to take a picture of (and while waiting, they sky-gazed together at the clouds).
(Side Crisis Core tangent: Phoenix's materia is obtained from - guess where - NIBELHEIM WATER TOWER, as the first part of the Seven Wonders of Nibelheim sidequest)
(Side simulation tangent: The Phoenix simulation Chadley makes for the Rebirth team to fight can summon Bombs, which is one of the two bracelet charms Tifa is prominently featured with in the Retrilogy, the other being Chocobo, which usually symbolizes Cloud)
(Side LOVELESS tangent: The summon that Rosa calls to defeat Varvados looks amazingly like the Phoenix summon, and the resultant ending motif - the fiery destruction of Guardia, the mutual protection of Alphreid and Rosa, and the unpromised promise of fidelity and reunion - most resembles the destruction of Nibelheim, the mutual protection between Cloud and Tifa - Cloud as Tifa's physical protector & Tifa [being Cloud's motivation] as Cloud's emotional protector, and the fulfilled yet voluntarily continual fulfillment of the promise at the water tower between them)
Part 2: Odin, Deity of Nibel Region
Now what of the actual place of Cloud and Tifa's births? Well the regional deity is, appropriately, Odin, Norse god of death, while the regional chocobo is Selena Shirena (in JP romaji), the blue ocean chocobo.
Odin in OG is also obtained from Nibelheim (specifically Shinra Mansion), and interestingly, when linked with "Added Effect" materia on an armour piece, can provide immunity to instant death on the wearer, while if the same pair of linked materia is equipped on a weapon, it can cause instant death. This is a most curious and most pertinent symbolism for the birthplace of not only the only two people in the FF7 party to have ever tasted Masamune blade first and survived (rip to the other Nibel villagers though) but also, thematically tragically, the birthplace of Sephiroth, whose destructive powers with said blade are legendary. Not forgetting of course, that central in the stories of Nibelheim is "the other side of the mountain" being a local reference to the mythical/thematic land of the dead (remember which two characters are pictured on the Mt Nibel side of the two Rebirth Nibelheim keyarts?).
Part 3: Junon/Nibel Connection via Regional Chocobo Abilities
From Junon region, we have Belle the grey mountain chocobo (which btw, is a requirement to reach the Phoenix summon crystals that will both weaken the simulation fight and strengthen the summon materia), and a clearer parallel cannot help being drawn to Cloud and Tifa hailing from the village of Nibelheim located at the base of MOUNT NIBEL, where both share memories being on that mountain (once when Tifa was 8 and Cloud 9, and again when Tifa was 15 and Cloud 16 - SEVEN years apart). Similarly, the Nibel region chocobo - required to access the Odin summon crystal - is Shirena the blue ocean chocobo, making both Junon and Nibel chocobo abilities the diametrically opposite elements of their region's most significant landscape/towns - Junon the ocean-facing city with the mountain chocobo, and Nibelheim the mountain-shadowed village with the ocean chocobo.
(Side Costa del Sol tangent: Cloud's blue shirt swimsuit is named "Ocean Chocobo" which makes for it being the Nibel region Chocobo ability seems accidentally on purpose appropriate, as well as being the more "real Cloud" of the two swimsuit options for him imo, while the Wild Surf option seems too... Zack minus the sunflower, so basically the SOLDIER Cloud option)
So, let's now look at the symbolism of Junon and Nibelheim together, as both mirrors and opposites, as parts of a whole.
Junon and Nibelheim
Phoenix and Odin
Life and death
Mountain and ocean
East continent and west continent
Taken together, the bond between Junon and Nibelheim almost looks like the endless cycle of death and life/rebirth, which is very symbolic of how the Lifestream works (those who are born from the Lifestream return to the Lifestream). Just as Phoenix is both life and destruction, just as Odin can be both death and protection, it is the complementary, symbiotic love of Cloud and Tifa, at once opposites yet similar, at once separate but a team, both strong yet each having their own weaknesses that the other balances, that ultimately is most emblematic of the lifecycle of the planet.
It is no wonder then, that Tifa is the one chosen by the planet and the WEAPONs, both in OG when Sapphire Weapon caused the distraction that allowed her to both embody yet subvert her role as the Andromeda of Greek legend by enabling her to save herself from her execution at Junon with the help of friends, and in Rebirth when the Gongaga WEAPON choose to show her the true struggle of the planet that she might reach Final Heaven, and be the heroine who will save and stay by the hero's side till the end.

for funsies and because the Writing Motivation gripped me, here's a snippet of a modern human au scene. no-context edition. it's unedited and also its 1 am, so if it's a lil wonky take pity on me <3 im just a lil guy <3
~
“It’s addressed to one, uh, Wally Darlin' -”
“That’s me.”
“Oh, is it? Great! I was hopin’ I wouldn’t have to return it. Good thing I carried it with me, huh? Y’know, funny thing - your last name kinda reminds me of mine.”
Wally takes the offered letter. “It does?”
“Yessir! It’s not often you meet a Darling, let alone a Dear-”
“Eddie Dear!” Wally says, his eyes widening and his smile growing.
Eddie blinks. He checks his shirt to see if a nametag manifested. There isn’t one. “How’d you know my name? Is - is this a prank? Am I being filmed?”
“Ha, no, silly. I knew you looked familiar. It was bothering me,” Wally says, looking completely unbothered. “We went to high school together.”
“High… school?” Eddie frowns, wracking his brain. “But I don’t… oh. Oh! You’re the funny lil’ fella who hung with the weird kids!”
Eddie slaps a hand over his mouth as soon as the words spill out of his mouth, blanching. He stares at Wally in horror, waiting for the smile to sour. Why did he have to go and open his big, stupid-
“Ha ha ha, ha ha” Wally enunciates, his smile turning into a grin. He points at himself, eyes narrowed with mirth. “That’s me. I’m happy you remembered! I was starting to think you didn’t.”
“I almost didn’t,” Eddie says. He slowly drops his hand, relieved beyond words that Wally didn’t take his words as a slight. They weren’t. “You seemed familiar as well, I just couldn’t quite put my finger on it.”
“Luckily, now we both have. It’s nice to see you again. How have you been?”
“I’ve been… well enough, I suppose.” Eddie carefully swallows the word vomit rising in his throat.
He doesn’t have time to catch up with Wally, as much as he’d like to sit down and chat. Or maybe he wants to hightail it out of here… the mortification is blending so strangely with this awkward reunion and Eddie’s own past issues rekindling. Eddie’s tempted to just sit down and hold his head in his hands until his mind stops spinning.
Wally hums. “Would you like to come back later to tell me more? It’s been a very long time, Eddie.”
“It has, and I’d like that very much, but… I’m not sure. I’ve got a packed schedule, Mr. Darling.”
“Call me Wally,” Wally says immediately. A strange sharpness underlies his tone.
“Wally,” Eddie corrects. “But it was awfully wonderful to see you again.”
“I agree. Maybe I’ll see you again tomorrow?”
Only the endearing uptick to the sentence tips Eddie off to it being a question. He adjusts his hat. “I can’t say for sure. I got a late start today, but my job doesn’t really offer a reliable timetable. It all depends on what I got to deliver, you know?”
“No,” Wally says. “But I can imagine.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I hope we do run into each other again! I’m just real busy.”
Wally nods. “I understand.”
Eddie nods back. They stand in awkward silence for a beat too long, though Wally seems perfectly comfortable with the quiet. And the prolonged eye-contact.
“Well.” Eddie clears his throat and takes a step back, preparing to say goodbye.
Naturally, his foot misses the step and he falls backwards. Wally’s eyes widen and he lunges forward, but Eddie twists and manages to turn the fall into a jarring stumble. He staggers halfway down the path before losing momentum.
“Hoo, that was a close one!” Eddie readjusts his hat and huffs, putting his hands on his hips. “That would’ve been a nasty fall, let me tell ya.”
“Please watch where you’re going,” Wally says, standing halfway down the steps. His cat is still where it was told to sit. The brief glimpse of surprise Eddie caught has been replaced by that sleepy, neutral expression. Eddie wonders if he even saw it.
“Don’t worry, I’m pretty talented at survivin’ tough tumbles,” Eddie laughs. “I’ll get to my truck in one piece - it was nice seein’ you again, Mr. Darli- Wally.”
Wally holds up his letter. “We’ll see you around.”
He says it like a promise. Or a threat?
Eddie smiles and tips his hat before leaving, struggling to keep his pace casual. He nearly throws himself into the truck and slumps into his seat with no small amount of relief. He grips the steering wheel and rests his forehead against it.
