"Chrissy Baker sounds like a cunt,” Daniel says, then cringes at the pointed look his mum shoots him. “What? It’s not like they’re old enough to repeat that yet.”
Grace laughs, the sound audible now over Livia’s cries, which are quickly fading into miserable whimpers. Of course, she behaves for grandma, and not the dad who dotes on her endlessly, feeds her, cuddles her, and wipes her smelly ass.
“Three words, Daniel,” she says, eyebrows raised. “Cash, money, bitches.”
or, Daniel navigates bed times, bath times and jealousy, while Max races his last season in Formula One

The Accident - Part VI
Atsumu x fem Reader
Warnings: None
Words: ~ 1,1 k
About: The flashback ends- but what will you do next?
Part I II -> Next Part
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You're not getting married."
Osamu's sharp remark did not have the intended effect. Both of you were still clinging to each other, acting all lovey-dovey.
"Samuu, you don't understand. She's my soulmate. I love her." Osamu's eyes almost popped out of their sockets while he kept watching how you two clung to each other and smiled like idiots, your hand on his cheek after he had said these words.
"You don't even know her. And stop touching her like that in public."
Atsumu's hands started wandering on your back, his fingertips teasing the bare skin on your back much to your delight - but to Osamu's horror.
"I don't mind - but who are you?" You turned towards him, and he paused for a second. You were beautiful, that much was certain. Shiny eyes, glossy lips, and a dress that looked like it had been made for you - but he quickly discarded every thought about your looks when he knew that he needed to stop this nonsense.
"I'm Osamu Miya. His brother."
"Oh." Your eyes widened as you took in his appearance, probably only then realizing how similar he looked to the man whose lap you were currently sitting on.
"Samu, we gotta go. The barkeeper told us that there's a priest next to this club."
"You're not getting married."
No matter how many times he repeated the sentence, it seemed like Atsumu was unable to understand.
xxxxxx
"And then you convinced me to get your car to drive us home. Wouldn't stop bickerin' about how it's expensive and designer and about how it costs more than Onigiri Miya will ever make. I'll definitely kick your ass for that."
A muscle under Osamu's eye twitches when he mentions the comment, and you have to hold back a snort at this. He's kind of cute when he's angry.
"And then?"
"You were gone. Found ya at the church, but it was too late. You idiots already signed the contract."
You slowly step back until your knees reach the bed, and you heavily sink down on it. It feels like he's telling you a story right out of a movie, not something that has happened just a few hours ago, the whole thing still too absurd and unreal.
"Can we redeem it?" You look at Osamu, like he's the only one that can save you now, and he somehow actually is. You still have hope that you can get out of this without negatively impacting the rest of your life.
"I've talked to our lawyer. It's a waterproof contract. Very surprising because the church was more than just a bit shady. You're both bound for a year until ya can file for divorce." His words feel like a death sentence, and you find yourself at a loss for words. You gulp at his words, blinking a few times to suppress your tears. You're an idiot—an idiot for getting in a situation like this.
It's silent.
You don't dare to look at either of them, your gaze only focused on the phone in your hands, and every passing second makes you feel even more uncomfortable, until you can't stand the silence anymore.
"I'll get going."
You stiffly get on your feet, your movements robotic and lifeless while you make an attempt to leave, but you're quick to get stopped by Atsumu before you can even make more than getting up. "Wait- I- I don't even have yer number!"
"Oh." You pause, standing there for a few moments while you watch Atsumu getting closer to you, until there is not much space left between the two of you when he stands right in front of you. "Hey- are you okay?" Concern laces his voice while he looks down at you, and you manage to nod with a forced smile. "Peachy."
Osamu snorts at your comment and shakes his head, a movement that you barely see in the corner of your eyes. He probably feels guilty for the whole situation too, the dark cicles under his eyes similar to Atsumu's, certainly because he tried to find a solution for this and did not sleep at all during the night. "People who say 'peachy' are anything but fine."
"Hey, look at me." Atsumu ignores his brother's comment and brings his hand to your cheek. You're startled but allow him to turn your face upwards until your eyes lock. "I'm not letting ya go when ya can't even walk properly. You'll eat something, then you'll take a nice hot shower and get in some clean clothes and then I'll bring ya home. That alright with you?" There is something about the way he softly states the words that sends a comforting wave of warmth through your body, and you find yourself nodding and trusting him.
"Hmm. Good girl. Now just eat the rest of the fries while Samu gets ya some clothes. Right, Samu?" Atsumu breaks the eye contact with you to look sharply at Osamu, who only sighs and nods. "I saw a souvenir shop at the lobby. Better than nothin'." You now look at Atsumu's side-profile, admiring his sharp jaw line, unable to do something else but wondering if there is even one bad angle on this perfect man, while Osamu leaves the room with another deep sigh.
"Shouldn't I have given him some money?" You take a deep breath and wipe your hands on your dress, noticing how clammy they got. Probably a side-effect of the nervousness.
Atsumu snorts and returns his gaze to you, an amused smile on his lips. "That serves him right. He always brags about how much he makes with his stupid restaurant." Atsumu looks so similar to Osamu when he rolls his eyes; it's almost comical. "Don't tell him I said that, but he really makes the best food ever. I'll take ya there and show you."
You hum approvingly, feeling somewhat a tingle run down your spine at the prospect of him taking you out for dinner but try to ignore it. "C'mon. Eat the rest of the fries. I saw how ya inhaled them. You can have mine too." He grins, something that makes him seem absolutely adorable, and you find yourself smiling back at him, a warm feeling running through your body.
"I'm not hungry anymore. I'll take a shower then?" You questioningly raise your brows, and he nods. "Yeah, of course. When Samu comes back, I'll put the clothes in front of the bathroom."
Thank you," you raise your hand as if to pat his shoulder, but you halt the movement just before reaching him. You shouldn't touch him. Technically, you don't even know him. His gaze flickers to your hand, and he appears to consider taking it. However, he quickly steps to the side, giving you some space to move to the bathroom.
Without looking back at him, you close the bathroom door, take a deep breath, and glance at the phone in your hand. You scroll until you find the picture of a bright-haired person—
and decide to finally make a call.

Summary: You and Josh celebrate Valentine's Day. || Standalone fic in the Cabin Fever universe
Pairings: Josh Kiszka x Reader | Genre: Fluff | Word Count: 2.1k | Warnings: None!
A/N: Happy day after Valentine's! Sorry I didn't get this out yesterday, but I hope it's cute enough to make up for it! ♡
Tumblr media
You stood outside the studio in the chilly February evening, watching the street lamps come on as you waited for your boyfriend. Josh and the boys had been working long days in the studio; today was no exception, even with it being Valentine's Day. You understood that they had work to get done, and you were happy to be patient and have your celebration with Josh when he was done.
Still, you hadn't been able to resist showering him with little treats throughout the day. You’d brought him and the boys red and pink frosted donuts that morning, and you'd brought Josh’s favorite takeout for lunch in the afternoon. You’d texted him love notes as he worked, and he’d responded to your most recent one with a kissy face and almost done in here, be out soon; you watched the door eagerly and imagined what sort of plans Josh would have for the rest of your night.
After a few more minutes of waiting, the door opened and Josh came out looking for you. He was happy to see you, and you felt a glow in your chest as he came over to you with a big, sweet smile. He didn’t say anything, just took your in a tight bear hug and gave a long, contented sigh.
“Hi, baby,” he said after a moment. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me too, honey.” You pulled back just enough to give him a kiss. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
He grinned. “Happy Valentine's Day,” he said. “You want to see what I got you?”
You nodded, watching with excitement as he pulled something out of his jacket pocket. He presented his gift to you with a boyish smile.
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” he said. In his hand was a singular, pink, heart-shaped lollipop.
“Oh,” you said, before you could stop yourself. You tried to quiet the part of you that was a little disappointed; you didn’t need anything for Valentine’s to know Josh loved you, and it was a sweet gesture even if it was a little... simple.
“You don’t like it?” he asked.
You looked up at him. “Oh, no, I love it,” you said quickly. You smiled and kissed his cheek. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
“It’s pink lemonade,” he said, and you could tell he was regretting his choice of gift. “Just like you like.”
“It is my favorite flavor,” you agreed.
He fished in his pocket and pulled out another one.
“I have one for me too,” he said. “I thought...” He rubbed the back of his neck, bashful, and you took pity on your poor boyfriend who only thought to get you a lollipop for Valentine’s.
“You thought what?” you asked.
He shrugged. “I thought it would be nice to sit out here on the sidewalk like we always do and talk for a little bit. And have lollipops.” He gave you a smile that was more of a grimace. “I dropped the ball pretty hard on this one, huh?”
Your smile was fond and forgiving. “No, honey. I think that sounds wonderful. Thank you for thinking of it.” Even if you had been imagining more than one piece of candy, you liked the idea of sitting and talking for a while.
You sat down on the edge of the sidewalk, tugging on his hand to get him to sit next to you. He did, holding his hand out to take your lollipop wrapper when you opened it.
“Let me take a picture,” you said, holding your lollipop out in front of you. “Hold yours up too.”
He did, and you snapped a picture of the pink and red candies in the light of the warm street lamp. You turned your phone towards him.
“Big smile,” you said.
He gave you a beaming grin. “Big smile!”
You laughed and took the picture, knowing you’d cherish that one as long as you lived. Josh was your sunshine no matter what, and his smile never failed to draw one out from you.
You put your phone away and leaned close for a kiss. He gave you a goofy muah.
“A real one,” you giggled.
He smiled and kissed you properly, slow and deep and sugary-sweet. “I love you, baby.”
You draped your arm over his shoulder and played with his hair while you caught your breath.
“I love you too, Josh,” you said softly. “And I love my Valentine’s gift. Just being with you is perfect.”
He kissed you again for a long while, and even after he asked you to tell him how your day was, he often interrupted you with soft kisses. When your lollipops were gone, you shared the last American Spirit in his pack; you talked and laughed on the sidewalk like you used to do before you were dating, just enjoying each other’s company. You’d spent countless hours out here in front of the studio as friends, both of you flirting with each other but too afraid to make a move; as much as you’d loved it then, you loved it even more now that you were a couple.
“You ready to head home?” Josh asked after a while. “I’ll make dinner.”
“Pizza, please,” you said.
He grinned. “Now, who could have guessed that?” Though Josh would readily admit that his twin had taken most of the talent in the cooking department, everyone agreed that Josh’s homemade pizza was unmatched, and you often asked him to make it for you.
He took your hand as he stood, the two of you walking together to where you’d parked the Jeep. Josh let you pick the music as he drove home, and you put on Aerie.
“You have excellent taste in music,” Josh said. “Whoever turned you on to John Denver must be a musical genius.”
You lightly punched his shoulder. “Musical genius, huh?”
He laughed. “Yeah. Wouldn’t you say so?”
You leaned your head against his arm. “Yeah, I’d say so.”
Josh sang or hummed along at various points; as you always did, you loved to listen to his voice.
“John Denver’s version of this song is better than the original,” Josh said confidently when “Everyday” came on. “The way he plays with the cadence, makes it folksy — listen.”
You smiled as you looked over at him. You’d heard the song plenty of times, but you liked to watch Josh feel the music as he sang it.
“Love like yours will surely come my way,” he sang, each note warm with admiration for the style of one of his favorite musicians. “Love like ours will sure be here to stay.”
You played with his free hand, running your fingers over his knuckles. “You’re right. His version is better.”
Josh smiled over at you. “That’s my girl.”
When you arrived home, Josh declined your offer to help him get his things out of the back of the car.
“You go on inside,” he said. “It’s only one or two things I have to grab.”
You did as he said, happy to be home; you unlocked the front door and slipped your shoes off before you came into the living room.
“Oh!”
The living room of your apartment was decorated top to bottom in festive, tasteful decorations put up with careful attention to detail. Dozens of hand-cut construction paper hearts were taped to the walls; polaroids of you and Josh were interspersed among them, each one a sweet or goofy moment from the past six months since you’d started dating. Glittery balloons and red streamers trailing down from the ceiling framed the nest of pillows and blankets carefully set up around a cutting board full of snacks and a bottle of wine. White fairy lights crisscrossed overhead, giving the whole scene a soft, cosy glow.
You ran back outside and fairly tackled Josh with a hug. He laughed as he caught you against him.
“What’s this for?” he teased.
“Oh, you —! Joshua Kiszka, I can’t stand you sometimes!” You pulled him down for a kiss. “And you let me believe you got me a lollipop for Valentine’s.”
He chuckled. “I did, didn’t I? I just forgot to mention all the other stuff I got you.”
He went inside with you, and he wore a bashful but pleased smile when you gushed over how pretty it looked and how much you loved the effort he’d gone to.
“You like it?” he asked, taking you in his arms.
You beamed up at him. “I love it. Thank you, Josh.”
“My pleasure, sweetheart.” He kissed your nose. “Stay here for just one minute, okay?”
You smiled. “What now?”
He smirked. “I guess you’ll just have to be patient, now won’t you?”
He went down the hall to your bedroom, and you had a few chocolate-covered strawberries while you waited for him to come back.
“Bath’s almost ready for you, baby,” Josh said when he returned. “I put out some pajamas for you on the bed, too.”
“Thank you,” you said, touched that he’d done even more for you even after all this.
He smiled. “You’re welcome, love. Why don’t you go unwind for a while, and I’ll get started on your pizza, hm?”
You kissed him again before you left, and you listened to him singing the same song from the drive home as he started making dinner — come what may, do you ever long for true love from me? You went into the bathroom, your heart wobbling as you saw he’d left you dozens of red sticky notes in the shape of a heart on the mirror, each one bearing a handwritten note.
To my beloved, the middle one read in his messy, lovely handwriting. Happy Valentine’s Day, baby!
He’d set the tub to fill, and while you waited you read each note where he told you how beautiful you were and how much he loved you. The tub was bedecked with candles and rose-petal bath salts, and you sank into the luxuriously warm water when it was ready.
After a few minutes, you heard a knock on the door. “Baby?”
“Come in,” you said, and you smiled when Josh peeked around the door.
“I brought you some wine,” he said. He came in and handed you a glass, clinking his own against it. “Bajabule.”
You smiled up at him. “Can you stay for a minute?”
“Oh, if you insist,” he teased. He sat on the edge of the tub, and you took a moment to admire him in the candlelight. He looked cosy and warm in his soft white sweater, his cheeks rosy from the heat of the bath, and his curls shone gold as he ran his hand through them.
“Thank you for doing all this for me,” you said.
He grinned. “You’re very welcome, baby. I almost caved earlier, at the studio — you looked so sad that I’d only gotten you one single lollipop. I wanted to tell you so bad.”
You gave a soft laugh. “I didn’t mean to be unhappy,” you said. “I would have loved it even if that’s all you’d done.”
He leaned down to kiss you, and you touched a hand to his jaw.
“I love you,” he said gently.
“I love you too.”
He kissed you languidly for a few moments, then gave you a last, reluctant-to-leave kiss.
“Let me go make sure your pizza’s not burning,” he said. “We can watch a movie or something when you’re ready.”
“Our movie?” you asked.
He chuckled. “Sure, baby.”
When you’d gotten out of the tub and dressed in the cosy pajamas Josh set out for you, you went back out to the living room to join him for dinner. The two of you watched Dirty Dancing as you ate; when the pizza was gone, you shared the snacks and opened the second bottle of wine.
By the end of the movie, both of you were giggly and flushed, steadily getting more tipsy and more handsy with each other. Josh was singing “now I’ve had the time of my life,” in a deep, exaggerated voice; you laughed and moved close to him, peppering his face with kisses.
“Did you have a good Valentine's Day, baby?” he asked, his smile warm against your cheek as he kissed you.
“Of course I did,” you said. You straddled his waist and loved the way his cheeks pinked as he looked up at you with love and desire.
“I think I know the perfect way to end it,” you said, carding your hands through his hair. “What do you think?”
He sighed against your mouth. “I think you’ve got some killer ideas, baby.”
His hands wandered over you, wanting and gentle and speaking of his love for you in more than words. This had been what you wanted for Valentine's Day, and though you loved and cherished Josh’s kindness to you, you knew you would have been happy just to be close to him.
You cradled his face in your hands and kissed him.
“I love you, Josh,” you said. “Happy Valentine's Day.”
He smiled and kissed you back. “Happy Valentine's Day, baby. I love you too.”

Hi there! <3 I re-watched Halloween Ends yesterday because I was upset and I needed Corey to save me, lmfao, and I wanted to ask you something that I've been wondering about. So, I have no way of getting the novelisation of the movie anytime soon, and you're kinda my only frame of reference for it; so I hope you don't mind me asking you this. When Corey is on his revenge killing spree, he kills those bullies at the mechanic shop. And Ronald is there. And then Ronald comes out to help the kids because of Terry. And only because of that. So, that makes me wonder... Did Corey plan on killing Ronald after he was done with the kids? Is that something that was elaborated on in the novel? Because I keep wondering about that, since Corey pretty much killed everyone that ever wronged him during that night, and Ronald was right there; but Corey didn't kill him (or didn't get the chance to, at least). Terry shot him by accident. But Corey killed his mom, of course. So, it'd make sense if he had at least planned on going after Ronald as well; even though he never actively wronged Corey (only passively, if we look at the way he just sat and watched while Joan abused Corey right in front of him, for example). But more so for completion's sake, y'know? They were on generally good terms, after all. I mean, in your latest post about the novel, you quoted that Ronald is "the loveliest thing" in Corey's life, according to Rohan. So, that makes me wonder all the more. OH, and... I fought with myself to include this point, but anyway- Corey takes the mask off when Ronald comes to help the kids, so that Ronald can see his face and know it's him. And it clearly disarms Ronald immediately and is the reason why Terry accidentally shot him instead of Corey, because he shielded him instinctively. Thus, I keep wondering if Corey meant for that to happen or if he took the mask off in order to assure Ronald that he wasn't actually in danger... It's such a seemingly insignificant thing that I'm thinking about far too much, but it's been bothering me that I don't know, and I was curious if the novel said anything about that at all, or if they just brushed over it there, as well. If they did, I'll just make up my own mind, of course, hdsfdjkfsk Anyway, I'm very sorry for rambling on about this, gosh! I love your blog(s) and everything you have to say about Corey and Rohan, you're awesome!!! Thank you for your detailed posts all the time, they keep me going! Take care! <3
ahhh hi !! thank you so much for sending this ask !! i love talking about this sort of thing more than anything lol and i’m sorry this took a little longer than i expected to reply, i was double checking like every ronald scene in the novel and cross-referencing that with behind-the-scenes details from making of, and re-watching the movie (i didn’t have to do that last one but like you, i needed emotional support from corey too 💗)
WARNING for discussions about (canon-typical) violence, murder, child abuse, abusive households, mentions of suicide and self-harm, and spoilers for the novelisation.
TL;DR – the novelisation does not elaborate on corey's intentions in any huge amount of detail, but it does provide some insight into a few different possibilities for ronald and corey’s relationship and what that would mean for corey's intentions.
general relationship
the novelisation actually gives some really specific details about the cunningham-prevo backstory, but also leaves a lot of aspects vague too.
joan married ronald when corey was 15, and she made it clear to ronald that he would "remain firmly on the sidelines when it came to corey's upbringing" which ronald "gladly" agreed to. so from the very beginning, ronald accepts he isn't going to be an active parent to corey, which maybe means he didn't believe he would do a good job anyway, or maybe he agreed it wasn't his place to parent corey in the same way joan does.
also, corey was already a teenager, he didn't need parenting in the same way a younger child would, which is partly why i think joan waited until corey was older to get remarried, because although being a single parent is difficult, she wouldn't want someone else in the picture as a father-figure for corey.
i don't personally see corey and ronald having a super close relationship, but there are multiple instances that show they are at least comfortable and familiar with each other (in line with what rohan said).
corey had a job before working for ronald, so we know ronald didn't have to give him a job. i hc that corey really wanted to do something stimulating instead of call centre work, and ronald agreed despite joan's grievances over it.
ronald doesn't seem too angry at him for being late, even though it is a regular occurrence (third time in a month).would he be so lenient on anyone who wasn't his stepson?
the gifting of the motorbike is a huge moment of course. that's a big gesture which, in the novelisation, also comes with some stilted bonding when ronald reminiscences that he used to "get laid [...], if you can believe it".
they have their united front moment over dinner when joan is trying to work a reaction out of them and neither gives her what she wants.
a smaller but still significant gesture is that corey uses dumbbells and a pull-up bar in his room to workout, which ronald bought him for christmas. very much feels like an attempt to help corey rebuild his self-confidence.
honestly though, rohan's comment about ronald being the "loveliest" thing in corey's life is probably right, especially as corey's life has been incredibly insular. as the town pariah with an abusive mom, his stepdad being cool about him being late for work is probably one of the best parts of his day.
but then on the other hand, there are moments which do not characterise their relationship very well, including multiple instances of ronald "ignoring" joan's abusive behaviour and not intervening.
to reiterate a previous point: ronald very willingly obliges joan's wishes of not "interfering" with corey's upbringing. her unfounded criticism and distrust of doctors, the school system and anyone other than her taking care of corey should have been a huge red flag (if, of course, any of that behaviour could have been inferred prior to their marriage).
ronald's passivity at being side-lined by his wife, allowing her to continue an unhealthy and unbounded relationship with corey.
when joan is berating corey for "sneaking around" and seeing allyson (the slap/kiss scene), she questions ronald as to whether he knew about the motorcycle, to which ronald stays completely out of it and doesn't answer her, despite her being furious with corey.
however it is a really difficult family dynamic to navigate, with so much nuance. i'm reluctant to say if ronald is a "good" or "bad" stepdad, or whether their father-son relationship is "good" or "bad", simply because their circumstances are so trying and complex. yes, joan has abused corey for a long time, but that abuse also extends to ronald in many ways too, resulting in him allowing (or enabling) joan's abusive behaviour in a flawed attempt to maintain the (toxic) status quo of the household.
did corey intend to kill ronald?
like i mentioned, there isn't any elaboration about corey's intentions in the novel, either through narration or extra dialogue. the scene happens almost exactly as it does in the film, with a few alterations and added background details. it's the surrounding details and plot differences that change my opinion.
i think movie!corey would have killed ronald if he had to. he knew ronald would be at home or at the yard, both of which were places he intended to go (to kill momma and the bullies). i'm not sure he had the same desire to kill ronald as he does the others, especially if he sees ronald in a good light, but to tie up loose ends he might do what is "necessary". i do find it very interesting that he lets ronald see his face though, and i can't decide if that is as a reassurance (he wouldn't kill ronald and ronald should know that) or because it just didn't matter (he's going to kill ronald so even if he sees corey's face, he won't be a liability to worry about).
however, i don't think novel!corey intended to kill ronald. in the novel, despite all of the extensive set-up of joan being abusive and corey's repressed desires to hurt her (and arguably ronald), there's no suggestion that corey planned to go back home as part of his spree and kill joan. if he wasn't going to kill joan after everything she did, i really don't think he'd have plans to kill ronald.
that's not to say there aren't implication in the novel that corey would hurt ronald too. there's a scene after the slap/kiss where corey can hear joan and ronald arguing about him, and once they've gone to bed corey gets a knife and stands outside their room, but ultimately doesn't go in. it isn't specified whether he wants to hurts just joan, or ronald as well.
michael's mask
ahh so when i was re-reading the scrapyard massacre in the novel to try and answer whether corey letting ronald see that it is him was a way of corey saying "you don't have to be scared of me" or even "you should be scared of me", i've come to a different conclusion about the mask.
“Who did this to you?” [Ronald] asked. “Him,” Margo said, pointing across the street. Ronald turned to find Corey twenty feet away on the other side of the fence, pulling Michael’s mask over his head. "Corey?" he muttered in disbelief.
the way the novel reads, i think that when corey puts the mask on in front of ronald, it's the first time he puts the mask on at all. if that is the case, it adds a whole other level to the transition between corey's kills as himself (or as the scarecrow) and his kills "as michael".
earlier, billy's sees "corey's shape wearing his prevo jumpsuit". it's fair enough that billy would assume it's corey without seeing his face, because they know that corey is there, but there's no mention of the mask either.
then, the way it describes ronald seeing corey put on the mask doesn't really indicate that corey was making sure ronald saw it was him. he's already "pulling on the mask" by the time ronald looks over at him; he wasn't waiting for ronald to look he was already doing it.
alternatively, the movie shows corey very deliberately stood there, waiting for ronald to see him and recognise him before he puts the mask on. i'm leaning towards it not being a gesture of reassurance but more of a last show of humanity to someone corey cares about -- "it's me, and i appreciate that you always treated me well, but this is the monster they've made me into".
in both versions, ronald jumps up to stop terry shooting corey. whether he was intending to shield corey or was just getting up to try and talk terry down, i think it says a lot about ronald as a character. he has been very passive this whole time, especially in scenes that take place at home, but in this moment he takes an authorative position to try and diffuse the situation. there's a scared kid with a gun, and his own stepson who he's starting to think might have done something awful, but this doesn't have to continue -- they can talk about it and calm down and whatever it is that has happened can be worked out.
