Finding His Way - Chapter Ten
Tumblr media
Summary: A showdown with Moff Gideon and some domestic fluff.
Rating: PG
Din locked in the coordinates for Bardos and sat back in the pilot’s seat. It had been a long time since he had been alone on the ship and it felt … wrong. Years he’d spent alone in this ship, or similar ones, traveling from one job to the next, and it always felt right but now he realized how lonely he had been. He glanced over at the co-pilot’s seat, remembering the time Ad’ika had sat there pressing buttons until he’d had to put the kid in his lap to keep him from sending the ship spinning out of control. Or the many times that Mariana had sat there beside him, not talking, just being there, keeping him company as they soared through the vastness of cold, dark space.
He knew he should be concentrating on the mission ahead of him, but it would be several hours before he reached his destination and he couldn’t make any firm plans until he’d gotten eyes on the situation, so he indulged himself. He closed his eyes and thought back over his conversation with Mariana. Had he done the right thing? Every word he’d said was true; he knew in his heart that she was his riddur, his wife, his soulmate. But should he have waited? Was it selfishness that had driven him to remove the helmet, a desire to finally see her face as he kissed her … or was it fear that this might be their only chance to look each other in the eyes?
He took off his helmet and sat it on the dashboard in front of him. The sleek lines of beskar reflected the lights in a kaleidoscope of colors. He rubbed his hand over his face, through his hair, trying to scrub away the doubts. “I will come back, cyar’ika,” he whispered. He hoped he was still telling the truth.
*********************
Bardos was a temperate planet. Leia’s intel had placed Gideon in a medium-sized city on one of the southern continents, so Din landed the Razor Crest behind a low range of hills a few miles from the city limits. His binoculars allowed him a decent view of the layout, and more importantly, revealed a number of suspiciously Imperial looking ships in the spaceport on the western edge.
Luke had offered him R2D2 for reconnaissance, and now Din wished he’d taken the Jedi up on the offer. The droid was annoying, but had proved itself harmless, and it would have made things a lot easier if he could get eyes on the Imp movements without risking exposing himself. Di’kut, he admonished himself. He’d just have to do his best to avoid notice until he was ready to reveal his presence.
He found a surveillance spot on the roof of a warehouse near the spaceport and monitored the situation until he had a pretty good idea of where the troopers were going. Not all of them were in armor, but they all seemed to be regular Storm Troopers, not Death Troopers, which was one bit of good luck. They were visiting several parts of the city, but one group, always in armor, always in perfect step, kept returning to the same building, a moderately grand private house surrounded by a wall topped with durasteel spikes. He watched for four days, making sure he had a good grasp of their routine.
He returned to the Razor Crest and prepared his weapons. Blasters, vibroknife, rifle, the last of his Whistling Birds, flamethrower, grappling hooks … his usual arsenal. Last, but not least, he clipped the borrowed lightsaber to his belt. He was ready.
Before he left the ship, he took one last look around, just in case.
********************
It had been a week since Din left, and Mariana was getting jumpy. Every time she heard Luke or R2 come anywhere near her little house, she was certain there had been a message. She knew that Leia’s operatives were keeping an eye on Bardos but so far they’d heard nothing other than a brief confirmation that the Razor Crest had been spotted on the ground near the city where Gideon was believed to be.
She tried to keep busy, but there wasn’t much to do. Luke had already retrieved everything from the caves that there was to be found, and without proper archival tools, there wasn’t much they could do with the manuscripts at the moment without risking further deterioration. Ad’ika took up some of her time, but he was more subdued than usual, content most of the time to sit quietly and play with Froggy and Ball and the blocks.
“I’m going to the settlement to pick up some more supplies,” Luke said on the morning of the ninth day. “It’s a short flight. I’ll leave R2 here to keep you company.”
She heard the roar of his X-wing as it lifted off from the landing pad hidden behind the trees on the far rim of the valley. Knowing she was alone, she indulged in a good cry. It was foolish; crying didn’t do anything, wasn’t going to make Din come back any sooner, but it helped ease the anxiety and pain a little. She hadn’t realized how accustomed she’d become to his stoic presence during the day. She knew she missed his warmth at night, his voice softly buzzing in her ear as he whispered secrets and stories that were for her alone. But now she missed the simple fact of knowing he was here.
When Luke returned, there was a smallish transport craft with him. R2 beeped excitedly but Mariana wasn’t sure if it was a positive or negative reaction to the visitor. I really need to learn some Binary, she thought.
A tall humanoid with a reddish cast to its skin and long, intricately braided black hair followed Luke down the path from the landing pad. Behind them came two droids: one a basic mag-lev transport droid and the other a slightly battered bipedal droid with an impressive array of extra arms.
“Mariana, meet Klev,” Luke said, indicating the alien. “They are from the settlement.”
Klev extended a hand and made a complicated gesture. Mariana wasn’t sure what to do in response and was relieved when Klev laughed. “Sorry, I am not used to human greeting rituals. I believe you make do with a simple handshake?”
“Yes,” she said, taking the alien’s hand. It was warmer than she expected, and slightly furred.
“Female, correct?”
“Yes,” Luke said. “The Florianas have only one gender,” he explained. “When they found out you were here, they had to get a look for themselves.”
“You make it sound so voyeuristic, Master Skywalker,” Klev said. “I am simply curious about other species. Here on this continent we do not get the volume of offworld visitors that is common on other parts of the planet. I would have come visiting sooner if I had known that the other male was going to depart.” They inclined their head toward Mariana. “We do not have mated pairs in my species, and I would have liked to observe your interactions.”
Luke stifled a laugh, and Mariana shot him a look. “Now that sounds voyeuristic, Klev,” he said.
“I meant no harm,” Klev said quickly. “I did not mean that type of interaction, of course I would respect the privacy of the human mating process …”
“It’s okay,” Mariana said before things got even more awkward. “I’m sorry you couldn’t meet my husband, but hopefully he’ll be back soon.”
Klev inclined their head again and was about to speak when their eyes widened and they gasped. “What .. what is this creature?” They said. Mariana turned to see Ad’ika in the doorway with Froggy in his hand. She picked him up and turned back to Klev.
“This is my son, Ad’ika,” she said proudly. “He’s adopted, if you couldn’t tell.”
“Interspecies adoption,” Klev said with delight. “Humans are full of surprises.”
The bipedal droid stepped forward, its voice vaguely female. “I would like to examine it if I may. I have not encountered this species before.”
Mariana took an involuntary step back. “Do not be afraid of RN-42,” Klev said. “It is a nurse droid and responsible for the health and well-being of those in this section of the continent.”
The droid extended one of its many arms. “You may call me FourTwo. When I learned there were new life forms in my sector, I was compelled to check in.”
Mariana gingerly shook the droid’s appendage. “Pleased to meet you, FourTwo,” she said. “Sorry if I seemed alarmed.”
“But maternal instinct compelled you to protect the child,” the droid said. “Understandable. Biological life forms are constrained by so many emotions.”
“Well,” said Luke. “I’m going to unpack the supplies, if anyone cares. You all have fun.”
Mariana shot him another look, but the Jedi innocently ignored her. Klev held out their hands. “May I hold them? Sorry … him. Male is him, female is her, correct?”
“Yes,” she said, handing Ad’ika over to the Floriana. FourTwo began to scan the child’s body with a variety of instruments. The two of them were fascinated and Ad’ika was eating it up.
After several minutes, FourTwo swiveled its head toward Mariana. “Your turn,” it said.
“What?”
“It is my directive to care for the physical well-being of every sentient life form in my sector. I must examine you for any potential health issues that may need to be addressed during your stay here.”
She hadn’t had a medical checkup in .. well, she couldn’t remember the last time anyone had done more than patch up an injury. “Okay, what do I need to do?”
“Nothing. I shall complete all the necessary scans without your assistance.” The various arms began to move up and down as different scanners and devices beeped and whirred. “Hmm.”
“What does ‘Hmm’ mean?” Mariana asked nervously. FourTwo hadn’t said “Hmm” when examining Ad’ika.
“I require a blood sample,” the droid said. Two arms shot out, one taking a firm hold of her arm, the other revealing a small needle. With a sharp jab, it extracted a small amount of blood and popped it into a compartment in its torso.
“Ah, good,” the droid said after a few moments. “As I suspected. Nothing out of the ordinary for a human female in the first trimester.”
“Wait .. what?” Mariana stammered. Her heart was pounding in her ears.
“I detected some anomalous hormonal readings in my initial scan but blood analysis confirmed that they are consistent with hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy.”
Mariana shook her head. “No, that can’t be right. I’m not … I have a contraceptive implant.” Three years ago, her owner had fitted all his slaves with the implants after one of them had to stop working in the fields after getting pregnant. The implants were supposed to last for ten years. She’d been up front with Din about it the very first night, when he’d expressed some concerns about the consequences of their intimacy.
FourTwo made a noise that sounded suspiciously like a laugh. “That thing?” The droid said. “It is useless. That type of implant was designed for species that have one or two breeding cycles per year. They are not very effective in humans, except in the first year after implantation. I assure you that you are most definitely pregnant.”
“This is good news, is it not?” Klev asked carefully. “This is the purpose of marriage, correct?”
“One of them,” she said shakily. “And yes, it is good news, it’s just … unexpected.” She laughed weakly. “Damn him, he’d better come back in one piece now, because I am not ready to raise two kids by myself.” She took Ad’ika back into her arms. “Looks like we’re going to be a clan of four, kiddo.”
**************************
“Come on, Gideon,” Din muttered. It had been almost two weeks since he’d arrived and so far Moff Gideon hadn’t taken the bait. After his reconnaissance, Din had entered the city from the eastern edge, not bothering to be discreet. He knew that rumors of a beskar-clad Mandalorian had to have reached Imperial ears by now. He occasionally saw a Storm Trooper on the streets, but no one had approached him yet. The inn he was staying at was not the most pleasant place, located directly behind the local stockyards, but it was cheap and offered a quick route out of town if necessary.
He stood now at the intersection of two main roads not far from the house he was certain Gideon was holed up in. He hadn’t seen the man yet, though, and there was always room for doubt. If the Imps didn’t make a move soon, he’d have to give up, regroup and wait for more intel from Senator Organa. Or he could make the first move.
“Rangir,” he finally said. To hell with it. He was tired of waiting. After one last weapons check, he strode down the street and approached the gates of the compound.
A Trooper immediately blocked his path, rifle cocked and ready. “State your business.”
“I’m here to see Moff Gideon,” Din said. “He has something I want.”
The Trooper cocked his helmet as if listening to a private comm. “Yes, sir,” he said after a moment. Straightening his helmet, he motioned with the gun for Din to enter the gates. “He’s been expecting you.”
Once inside the gates, Din let his awareness expand to take in the entire courtyard. He spotted several ways to get out, and several more places to avoid getting trapped in. He filed them away in case he needed them later.
A pair of smartly dressed Troopers with red pauldrons on their shoulders stepped forward, blasters in hand. “Come with us,” they said. “Hands where we can see them.”
Din held his hands up, away from his weapons. He thanked the stars they hadn’t insisted he disarm himself immediately, but he was under no illusion that he’d be allowed to walk right up to Gideon with his full complement of weapons. Three more Troopers fell in behind him, rifles trained on the back of his neck, and they entered the building itself.
Their boots echoed on the tiled floor of the hallway that led toward a set of interior doors inlaid in a variety of woods. It was an abstract pattern, angular and harsh. The lead Troopers pulled the doors open and ushered him into what had probably once been a dining hall or ballroom, a gathering place for guests. The far end held a raised dais, accessed by a short flight of shallow steps, at the top of which stood Moff Gideon, looking incredibly smug.
“Ah, Mr. Djarin,” he said, spreading his hands in welcome. “I wondered how long it would take you to give in and knock on my door.” He waved the extra Troopers out of the room, leaving only the two red pauldroned ones to guard the doors. “Please, come in. We can be civilized about this, if you’re smart enough.”
Din approached the dais. When he was about halfway there, Gideon raised one hand. “Far enough. Lay down your weapons before you come any closer.”
Din carefully removed his rifle, his blasters, the various knives and other small arms that hung ready, and laid them on the blue-tiled floor. Gideon raised an eyebrow. “Impressive,” he said. “You certainly came prepared. Pity you won’t get a chance to use any of them. A Mandalorian in battle is a thing of beauty.”
“What do you know about the beauty of Manda?” Din growled. He wanted to get Gideon off guard a bit, hoping he wouldn’t notice the lightsaber still clipped to his belt.
Gideon laughed. “More than you would expect,” he said. “But you said I have something you want. I wonder what that could be?” He slid a hand into the pocket of his uniform jacket. “Of course, you have something I want, so perhaps we can come to an arrangement.”
Although it pained him deeply, Din said, “I’m listening.”
Gideon withdrew his hand from his pocket. He held the hilt of a lightsaber in his hand. He lifted it in front of him and thumbed the switch. With a low hum, the blade sprang to life. Unlike the blade of Skywalker’s sabers, this one was black like the depths of space, with a faint white-hot glow around the edges.
“Do you recognize this blade, Mr. Djarin?” Gideon slowly rotated the weapon, admiring the strange perfection of it.
“Hair Dha Kad’au,” Din said reverently. The Darksaber. It was real.
Gideon smiled. “Very good. And I’m sure the sight of it in my hand is an abomination to a devout man like yourself.” He stepped down one step, coming slightly closer, still holding the blade in front of him.
“You would be correct,” Din said. His hand itched to draw his own lightsaber but it was too soon. He shifted his weight, as if taking an unconscious half-step toward the Darksaber. He saw the corner of Gideon’s mouth curl, and knew he had a chance to make this work.
“And you have something that I want, something that I believe you are quite fond of, but that really has no practical use for you. This, on the other hand … with this, you would be a hero. The one to bring the fabled weapon of the Manda’lor back to the Mando’ade. A leader, someone to be reckoned with.”
“Also correct,” Din said. He used the retinal controls in his helmet to target the two Troopers with his Whistling Birds. He took another half-step forward.
“So, perhaps we can come to an understanding,” Gideon said. He lazily swung the blade back and forth, and Din tracked it with his helmet.
“Perhaps we can,” Din said. He waited a moment, for Gideon to relax slightly, sure he had the upper hand. Then, he struck.
Activating the Whistling Birds with a glance, Din dropped to his knees and rolled aside. The Whistling Birds found their marks, taking out the two Troopers. Din freed his lightsaber and was on his feet, its blue blade sparking in front of him, before they hit the ground.
Gideon grinned. “Impressive,” he admitted, dropping into a fighting stance. “A Mandalorian using a Jedi weapon. You’ve been busy since we last met, Mr. Djarin.”
Din said nothing, just mirrored Gideon’s stance. He could be patient.
The doors behind him opened, the three remaining Troopers pouring in. Before they could aim their blasters, Din shook loose the small blaster he’d concealed beneath his left forearm plate and shot them all. Then he was facing Gideon again, saber still ready in his right hand.
Gideon’s smile faltered just a bit. “Shall we, then?” He said. He made a small bow toward Din, lunging forward at the last second to strike viciously with the Darksaber. Din parried and the two blades clashed with a horrific screech. Sparks flew as the blades slid against each other and both men stepped back to regroup.
Again and again, Gideon attacked, and each time Din parried. The Moff was shorter, and lighter, but damn, he knew how to wield a blade. “You can hold me off for a while, Djarin, but this isn’t your forte. You know it, and I know it. This can only end one way.”
Din did not reply, concentrating on the fight. He saw a chance to make his own advance and took it, but Gideon parried, nearly spinning Din’s blade out of his hand. He dropped back into a defensive position, content to wait for the next opening. Gideon continued his attack, pressing Din back step by step, away from the dais. Every time Gideon advanced, Din gave ground, hoping to lull his opponent into making another small mistake.
Then Gideon lunged forward, narrowly missing the side of Din’s helmet. Din raised his lightsaber to parry and stepped back. His foot came down on one of his own discarded weapons and slipped out from under him. He went down on one knee and Gideon raised the Darksaber for a killing blow.
“Say goodbye, Mr. Djarin,” the Moff said.
Din dropped his lightsaber and raised his hands in front of him. “Please,” he begged. “You can have the Child. You can keep the Darksaber. Just don’t kill me.”
Gideon laughed. “So the great Mandalorian warrior is a coward after all.” He raised his blade triumphantly.
Din closed his eyes and lowered his arms, waiting for the final blow. As Gideon’s arm swung down, Din’s hand darted out, grabbed the lightsaber, thumbed it on and raised the blade into Gideon’s chest. The Moff gasped in disbelief as he felt the lightsaber strike home.
“I am not a coward, Moff Gideon,” Din said quietly. They were the last words the Imperial bastard ever heard.
Gideon’s body dropped to the ground, the Darksaber rolling away from his slack hand. Din switched off his lightsaber and began gathering his weapons, including the Darksaber. It would not be long before more Troopers arrived on the scene.
*******************
“I know I said I’d try to get there for Ben’s birthday,” she heard Luke saying, “but Djarin’s not back yet. I can’t leave them alone.” The reply was muffled, and Mariana walked away. She’d heard enough.
It had been over two weeks since Din left, and still no word. She was beginning to lose hope that he was coming back. Just two days ago, Leia’s operatives had reported that the Razor Crest was still in place outside the city and hadn’t moved since it landed.
She felt bad for Luke. He had finished his business here on Florian but was unable to leave. She knew he wanted to head back to Coruscant, to see his family, but he was stuck just as much as she was. Until they knew for sure if Din was coming back or not, they were both in limbo.
Ad’ika was napping and she’d taken the opportunity to go for a quick stroll. She tried to take a walk every day, sometimes with Ad’ika in tow, sometimes alone. FourTwo had advised her on proper prenatal care, and exercise was one of the many things the nurse droid had suggested. It still hadn’t quite sunk in that she was going to have a baby. In fact, she was still coming to terms with the fact that she and Din were married.
The Empire had taken away her family once and now that she’d finally found another one, that blasted Moff Gideon was trying to take it away, too. She swallowed her bitterness; Luke had warned her that hate and anger were not healthy emotions, but how could she not hate the ideology that had killed her parents, sent her into slavery, hunted down innocent children like Ad’ika and might leave her a widow before she’d even had a chance to really be a wife?
She wandered down the trail toward the little meadow where Luke and Din had practiced fighting. There were more wildflowers blooming now, little blue ones scattered beneath the yellow ones and a few bright pink clusters here and there. She picked a bouquet for Ad’ika. They’d come here the other day and he’d enjoyed watching the insects buzzing around the flowers — and the little lizards that hunted the insects. She’d had to stop him from eating one, which had made him laugh and scamper away. She smiled at the memory and was straightening up when she heard the roar of an engine overhead. She looked up just in time to see a large silver ship drop toward the coast. The flowers fell from her hand and she began to run.
Luke was waiting with Ad’ika when she reached the village. “Go on,” he said. “We’re right behind you. But be careful!”
She dashed past him, but slowed as she reached the bottom of the steep trail. She couldn’t run up it but she began climbing as fast as she could, stumbling now and then but never quite losing her footing. She was out of breath and had a stitch in her side by the time she reached the top, but she only paused for a moment to look back and make sure Luke was following. He was, and she pressed onward across the scrubland.
The Razor Crest had settled down on nearly the same spot it had left two weeks ago. The engines were powered down by the time she reached it, but the ramp was still up.
For a long moment, nothing moved. Then the ramp slowly began to lower. She held her breath until it touched the ground and Din appeared at the top of the ramp. Then she ran forward, fairly leaping into his arms.
“Cyar’ika,” he said, pulling her into a tight embrace. “I told you I’d come back.”
Luke and Ad’ika arrived and she heard the child squealing, “Da!!!” Luke let him down and his little feet carried him up the ramp as fast as he could go. Din leaned down to scoop him up and pull him into the hug.
“I take it you were successful,” Luke said after giving them a moment.
Din released her from his arms and handed Ad’ika over to her. He unclipped the lightsaber from his belt and tossed it over to the Jedi. “Thanks for the loan, but I won’t be needing this anymore. I have my own,” he said. He unclipped another saber and thumbed it on. A midnight dark blade shimmered into existence, like a rip in the fabric of the world.
“Congratulations, Mand’alor,” Luke said with a bow.
Din shook his head. “Not for long,” he said, shutting the blade off. “This isn’t meant for me.”
They took their time walking back to the village. It was late in the day, and they all decided it made the most sense to spend one last night in the ruins and leave in the morning. Mariana could tell that Din was tired, even though he showed no outward signs of it and she was glad he’d get a chance to rest before they headed off planet.
Luke took Ad’ika with him into his building. “R2 and I will look after this little guy for a while,” he said. “And congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Djarin.” He winked before disappearing into the building.
“So,” said Din as they walked into their own building.
“So,” she said.
Din crossed to the table, sat down and began to strip off his armor. The helmet was first to come off and he ran his hand through his hair, which had been plastered down with sweat. It stood out in all directions, making him look like a little boy who’d just woken up from a very intense nap.
Mariana sank into the other chair and helped him undo the rest of the armor. They made a pile of beskar on the floor, but left the helmet and the Darksaber on the table.
“Do you want to talk about it?” She asked.
He shook his head. “Not yet.” He reached out and tucked a strand of hair back behind her ear. His eyes were exhausted but happy. “We have plenty of time.”
She slid out of her chair and into his lap. He leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes. “This is nice,” he murmured. He sounded like he was ready to fall asleep at any moment.
“You’re tired,” she said. “You should lie down.”
“Hmm,” he said. “If we lie down, I won’t want to sleep.” The effect was spoiled by a yawn that threatened to split his jaw in two.
“Come on, cyar’ika. Come to bed.” She stood up and tugged at his hand. He stood reluctantly and she led him over to the bed. He sank down onto the mattress with a groan. She removed his boots and by the time she was finished, he was asleep. She kissed his forehead and tucked the blanket around his shoulders, before leaving the room.
She walked to Luke’s, where she found Ad’ika and R2 fiddling with something on the workbench that had a lot of different colored lights. “He’s making a toy for him,” Luke said. “To teach him Binary. I told him the kid can’t even speak one language properly yet, there’s no need to throw another one at him, but R2 insisted.” He tilted his head at her. “I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon.”
“He’s asleep,” she said. “I’ll take Ad’ika back, give you and R2 a chance to pack everything up. I can talk to Din later. Right now he needs to rest.”
“Get some rest yourself,” Luke said. “Trust me, get it now, because you’re going to need it later.” He smiled. “I don’t think Han and Leia got a decent night’s sleep until Ben turned two. Those two are not pretty when they are tired.”
She laid her hand against Luke’s cheek and pressed a quick kiss against the other one. “Thank you again, for everything,” she said.
He shrugged. “It’s what we Jedi do. We help people.” He kissed her cheek. “Take care of that husband of yours. And may the Force be with you.”
***************************
Din woke up with his face smashed into a pillow. He didn’t remember getting into bed. The last thing he clearly remembered was sitting at the table, leaning back against the wall, wrapping his arms around Mariana … he lifted his head a fraction of an inch and looked around the room.
Mariana and Ad’ika were packing things into their bags. Well, she was packing things, and Ad’ika was removing them. “Put that back,” she whispered. Ad’ika giggled. “Shh, we have to be quiet. Daddy’s asleep.”
“No, he’s not,” Din said, propping himself up on one elbow. He still felt a bit muzzy from sleep but at least he was able to focus on them properly.
“Da!” Ad’ika scrambled over the bed and into his arms. He lay back, settling the child on his chest. By the stars, he’d missed this.
“How long have I been asleep?” he asked.
“About four, maybe five hours,” Mariana replied. She lay down beside them and started playing with his hair with one hand and stroking Ad’ika’s ear with the other. “From the looks of you, you need about ten hours more.”
“I didn’t sleep much while I was gone,” he admitted.
“Still not ready to talk about it?”
“No.” He shifted onto his side so that Ad’ika lay between them and he was facing her. “Right now I just want to be here, with you, with my family.” He traced a finger down her face, tucking that ever errant strand of hair behind her ear again. “My clan of three.”
“Four,” she said.
“What?” He must be more tired than he thought. He mentally counted and came up with three again. “No, three. You, me, Ad’ika. Three.”
She took his hand and pressed it against her belly. “Nope. Four.” She leaned into his ear and whispered, “I’m pregnant.”
Din was suddenly wide awake. “Wait .. what? You said you had an implant …” He sat up, which made Ad’ika squeak indignantly.
“A crappy implant that wasn’t designed for humans. I was probably the cheapest one out there, knowing Toran.” She sat up and took his face in her hands. “The district nurse droid paid a visit while you were gone. It found out there were offworld visitors and one of its directives is to check out any health threats to the local population, so it gave me and Ad’ika a check up.” She kissed his nose. “That implant probably stopped working about a year after it was placed.”
Din took a moment to absorb this new information, then he smiled and kissed his wife. The Way ahead was even clearer now.

A list of fandoms I'm in (in no particular order, will probably be updated regularly. Some fandoms are more intense and some are more casual. Depending on the fandom, I could go on and on about fandom topics for HOURS. Let's get into it!)
Harry Potter, Disney, Marvel, DC comics, Miraculous Ladybug, Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra, Star Wars, Literature, Winx Club, Nintendo, Minecraft, Little Witch Academia, Voltron, Coraline
Details:
Harry Potter- I got into Harry Potter in 7th grade and now I am the resident expert in my family and in my friend group. I read all the books, watched all the movies (notably the British version), and I've seen the Fantastic Beasts films as well. I've also read Tales of Beedle the Bard (the Warlock's Hairy Heart was traumatizing) along with the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them textbook (plus an updated edition). I also read The Cursed Child script and while I mean no hate to anyone that liked it, I hated what it did to the canon. I am in Hufflepuff with some Ravenclaw tendencies (I took the Pottermore quiz 3 times, 2 out of 3 I got Hufflepuff, the other time was Ravenclaw). I had a pottermore account and I was so upset when it got converted to the Wizarding World page. I cosplayed Hermione in 7th grade complete with British accent and even monologued as her for a talent show (classmates and teachers would recognize me as the Hermione girl all the way through high school). I was obsessed and I still love it even if J.K. Rowling has gone off the deep end on Twitter... yeah... my favorite character is Hermione but I also relate to Luna
Disney- there's so much that goes into the Disney part of my fandom list. I'm excluding Marvel and Star Wars from this part as they were originally separate entities before Disney got the rights to them. I have seen almost every animated Disney film ever and often use random movie quotes in conversation. My favorite villain is Maleficent, my favorite princess is Ariel (followed by Belle, Rapunzel, and Anna). I relate to so many of the characters. I'm not sure who my favorite Pixar character is though (I love Violet, Sadness, Dory, and Piper (from the short)). My favorite Disney fairy is Fawn. My favorite characters overall are Ariel and Stitch. Disney is definitely on the list as one of my biggest obsessions. My favorite movies are Lilo and Stitch, the Little Mermaid, Inside Out, Alice in Wonderland (original), and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Marvel- I mostly get my Marvel exposure through the MCU, other movies, and animated TV shows. I have difficulty reading graphic novels so most of my comic book knowledge comes from friends, posts, or wikis. My favorite characters are Spider-Man, Captain America, Peggy Carter, and Scarlet Witch. I also like Gwenpool, Deadpool, Spider-Gwen/ Ghost-Spider, Venom, Squirrel Girl, Daredevil, Mantis, Gamora, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor, Loki, Bucky, Black Panther, and most MCU characters. Out of the X-men I really like Professor X, Wolverine, Mystique, Magneto, Nightcrawler, and Quicksilver (either version- MCU or Fox).
DC- this was the franchise I was more familiar with growing up but again, graphic novels aren't easy for me to read so most of my knowledge comes from information pages about the comics or from tv/movies. My earliest experience with DC came from the 60s Batman series, with Catwoman and Robin being my favorites. I also watched the Wonder Woman series from the 70s and a handful of CW shows, my favorite of which being the Flash and Arrow. I also managed to watch all 5 seasons of the Teen Titans Cartoon Network series from 2003. With that being said, my favorite characters are Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Flash, Batman, Nightwing/Robin (Dick Grayson), Green Arrow, Starfire, Raven, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Alfred. I also like most of the bat family, and when it comes to CW I LOVE Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost and Cisco.
Miraculous- this is one of my guilty fandoms but since this is Tumblr I'm not too worried about it. I love Marinette and I relate to her on an astoundingly deep level (minus the stalking and obsession with potential lovers, that's creepy). If I had a miraculous, I'd probably want the Ladybug one, but the Cat miraculous, fox miraculous, and snake miraculous are good too. My favorite character is Marinette/Ladybug.
Atla/Tlok- I jumped on the avatar bandwagon just when it was starting to get popular, so I managed to get through the series before the memes took over everything. Same with Tlok, although i couldn't completely avoid the spoilers for that when i started it. I've been wanting to get into the comics because of the short story comics I've read, they seem easier to read than superhero comics. My favorite characters are Aang, Katara, Ty Lee, Iroh, Korra, Jinora, Asami, Suki, Appa, Momo, Naga, and Pabu. I also like Sokka, Mai, Zuko, Lin, Kuvira, Varrick, Zhu Lee, and Azula. I feel really sorry for her and while I understand that a redemption arc would undermine the importance of her corruption arc, I still wish she could have one. I would love to be a waterbender or an airbender... maybe a waterbender raised in the air nation? Obviously, being the avatar itself would be awesome. The show has taught me a lot of great lessons and put a lot of stuff into perspective for me.
Star Wars- oh boy, talking about this one is dangerous. I've seen firsthand the horrors of the Star Wars fandom but then again no one will probably see this anyway so... I've seen all the movies and I remember watching the clone wars series with my brother when I was younger but we fell wayyy behind and it's taking us forever to get back into it. I've also seen the Mandalorian and quite enjoyed it. I like the prequels unironically, in fact, the prequels are some of my favorite movies. I especially like how they switched from lightsabers being heavy weapons to light weapons that can be used for all kinds of tricks that make for epic battles like the ones we see in Revenge of the Sith. The sequels were fun to watch but when I would analyze them along side their predecessors, I came to the conclusion that, for me, they were good to watch but did not do anything good for the rest of the franchise. My favorite characters are prequels/clone wars Obi Wan and Anakin, Padme, Ashoka, Leia, R2D2, BB-8, R4-P17, the Mandalorian (Din Djarin), and Grogu. If I had a lightsaber I'd want it to be blue, but when I was little I got a purple one like Mace Windu because it was closer to pink and I was into pink at the time. I still have that lightsaber and none of my friends have a purple one so it's one of my flexes. I feel like I wouldn't make a good jedi because of attachments being forbidden, so I'd probably become a grey jedi.
Literature- this is a broad term I use to cover all the random books and stories I liked reading and have studied. So we have Shakespeare (Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet), The Great Gatsby (bored while reading, loved to analyze), Grendel (HATED reading, loved to analyze, Grendel really needed a hug and a friend), The Crucible, Fahrenheit 451, Dark Life (+ the sequel Riptide, both are by Kat Falls good reads, sci-fi and kind of dystopian), The Once and Future King
Winx Club- I think the show is trashy but I still love watching it. I haven't been able to get through season 6 though and I hated what they did with season 8 and Fate: the Winx Saga. My favorite character is Bloom along with Stella and Flora. I prefer rai to nick. My favorite transformations are magic winx, enchantix, and harmonix. My favorite member of the Trix is Icy followed by Darcy. My favorite Pixies are Chatta and Lockette.
Nintendo- mainly Pokémon above all else, followed by Animal Crossing. I have also played (mostly as player 2 or just never beat or watched my brother play) mario games, legend of zelda, pikmin, and kirby. Games I haven't played but I just liked the characters/the lore and probably learned about through Super Smash Bros. are Fire Emblem (Lucina mostly), Metroid (Samus and baby metroid), and Kid Icarus. Pokémon is where I'm most knowledgeable but you'll most likely beat me in battle. I am however great at MarioKart and I always destroy my friends at it. Terrible at fighting games though.
Minecraft- I like playing this casually. Sure, I'll play for hours and hours on end for months, but I prefer to stay exclusively in peaceful when playing Survival mode and I don't make anything too ambitious in Creative mode. I like to write, so sometimes I'll make a rough layout of the settings of my stories in different worlds. I prefer interior design and decorating when building, and when in survival mode I focus more on mining and gathering while my brother works on ambitious building projects. I just bring him the raw materials and furnish the interior when he finishes the outside.
Little Witch Academia- this takes up a smaller portion of my fandom list because there were only 2 seasons and a couple movies and I watched the whole series years ago, but I still enjoy it. At one point I wanted to cosplay Akko, and I loved the nod at Twilight through the Nightfall series. And I especially liked the twist that Shiny Chariot was Ursula, which I suspected for some time. The blend between magic and technology was fun to see, but I was so sad that the series ended RIGHT when Akko finally showed signs of magic proficiency. Also, Shiny Chariot being the reason Akko couldn't do magic was heartbreaking.
Voltron- this takes up a much smaller portion of my fandom list mainly because I haven't even finished it. I know hardly anything about Transformers aside from the Bumblebee movie so to me I just watch it for fun. It reminds me of power rangers, star wars, and star trek, and then there's just a transformer insert. But I don't know anything about Transformers so maybe the show is more rooted in canon than I think.
Coraline- I am in a love-hate relationship with Coraline. I have watched the movie several times, I've read the book, I've watched hours of theories and analyses on youtube, I've watched behind the scenes videos by Laika, and I even wrote a script for a fan film parody. I am amazed at how original the story is and how impressive the stop motion animation is but I also have recurring nightmares from it and it scares me/creeps me out to the max. If anyone asks what my scariness limit is, it's definitely Coraline.

Hiiiiii love! For the non-US asks:
1, 7, 11, 27? If you’re up for it? 💜
Hello my dear, thank you, let's give it a shot!
1. Favourite place in your country?
So, I've got loads of favourite places, but the two that I most think of in terms of being very specifically Scottish places are the spot on South Bridge in Edinburgh where there's a gap in the buildings and you can actually see that, at street level, there is another street level running underneath you several stories down, it's the best example of what makes the layout of the city so characterful (alongside some other, less charitable adjectives when you first have to try and navigate that area.)
Also, this one spot on the road up north where the road snakes through a picturesque valley, it's like being in a postcard, I think there's even a small viaduct in sight.
7: Three words from your native language that you like the most?
So, technically my native language is English (partially because I grew up middle class, and the intersection of class and language in the UK is a whole mess,) but I have enough Scots in my day to day language now to pick out some highlights:
-Dreich (grey and dreary and bleak weather,) it's very fun to say and and something we definitely do need a word for around here (it's pretty dreich as I type this.)
-Cannae or dinnae (tied) (cannot or do not, respectively,) it just sounds and feels *good* to disappoint someone in Scots. I reccomend you try it.
-Radge (dictionary says a wild or violent person, but I am more familiar with the usage as more of an affectionate term for someone, particularly a kid or young person who's a bit cheeky, boisterous, loud or energetic, for your pop cultural references: Donna Noble is a bit of a radge, R2D2 is a right wee radge.) I just love mischief.
11. Favourite national writer/poet: I don't know many writers or poets, so I'm gonna be boring and pick a poet laureate, but as I get older, my appreciation for Carol Ann Duffy's work just grows and grows. As starting points I'd reccomend Valentine (which was very funny to my whole class in high school, but it's also quite heartfelt and lovely,) and The World's Wife collection.
27. Favourite national celebrity? Probably the comedian Susan Calman, whose bids to play the next Doctor, Batman and James Bond I genuinely and unreservedly support (BBC sounds, the on demand catch up service for BBC radio seems to be available internationally, I would heartily reccomend searching her name on it every few months waiting for whenever one of her shows gets rebroadcast.)
Thank you for the question! This was really fun to answer, and probably boring and rambling to read. I refuse to apologise!

is this the 2nd floor of that one empty building in Tomorrowland?
Just to refresh memories, this is the image to which this refers:

This is actually where Star Tours is now. The queue layout actually didn’t change, and where you see the large snowflake, that’s where the screen is where Star Tours announces upcoming trips, and the “Mighty Microscope” is located where the Star Speeder that R2D2 and C-3PO are working on now sits.

What is Mobile First Website Design and Do You Need It? A Guide for Business Owners.
“Yes, your site will be mobile friendly.”
Any good web designer will tell you that. But your next question as a business owner should be, “Do you design mobile first and should my site be designed mobile first or not?”
Getting the answer to this question answered correctly can increase revenue. Getting it wrong can leave money on the table because of a less than optimal experience visitors have on your website.
This article isn’t written for web designers, but for you, the business owner, to help you understand what type of site you need and what to talk to your website designer about.
What is Mobile First Web Design?
Mobile first web design simply means that the mobile version is designed first and takes priority in design considerations before the desktop version of a site is created.
In the “old days” (aka the early days of the smartphone), all web designers would create a beautiful site for desktop and then think, “Okay, how are we also going to make this look good on mobile?” Then they would create the responsive design of the site for small-screen devices. It’s not wrong, it’s just the way everyone designed back then, partly because the viewership on mobile was small and it was a newer medium.
Not anymore.
When you need a new website for your business, you now need to make a decision about whether your site will be Mobile First designed or Desktop First designed. (Note: When we say desktop, we also mean laptop. It really means a larger screen with a horizontal orientation versus a smaller with a vertical orientation.)
Mobile sites tend to have more restrictions. For example, the clickable button on a mobile site has to be large enough that the end-user can click it easily. On a desktop, this isn’t an issue.
Why is Mobile First Design Important?
More and more people will visit your site on their mobile. This is a general trend and is expected to grow. Your site needs to function well in a mobile environment.
In 2012, smartphone sales overtook PC sales. Obviously, that correlates with more people using smartphones to search the web.
However, that doesn’t mean it is true for your website. You need to know the truth about your website’s viewers.
How Do I Know The Mobile Versus Desktop Viewer Stats on My Site?
You can know the trends for your own website if you have Google Analytics installed.
Go to your Google Analytics homepage dashboard by logging in at https://google.com/analytics
Look at your home Google Analytics dashboard for a section called What Are Your Top Devices. It looks like this:
Click on that area and you’ll be given more detail.
You can change the date filter to see how your mobile versus desktop viewership has changed over time. Typically, we see a growing trend toward mobile, especially if views are compared Quarter-to-Quarter or Year-to-Year.
In general, we are consistently seeing a trend toward greater mobile viewership. However, this depends on the audience your site is targeting (see below).
Why is it important to know whether people are viewing more on desktop or more on mobile?
Because you want to design first to the device on which the majority of online visitors view your site.
All designers must make choices. Your site should look fantastic on desktop and mobile. However, it will still be slightly design optimized to look and work a wee bit better on one platform than the other. This is not just a Moon & Owl Marketing approach. The desktop first versus mobile first choice is innate and requires that every designer has to make some decisions which render the appearance and effectiveness a tiny bit better on one platform versus the other. The key question is, does desktop or responsive design come first.
Here is a general rule of thumb. The more business-to-business (B2B) your site’s audience is, the more desktop views you will have. The more consumer oriented (B2C) your site is, the more mobile viewers you will have.
Notice the difference between these two examples.
B2B Website | Desktop Usage Heavy
B2C Website | Mobile Usage Heavy
This makes sense. Think about how you use the Internet.
You look at different sites at work on your PC than you do when surfing on your phone. Everyone follows this pattern.
So if you have a heavily oriented B2B website, it should be designed desktop first if 70% of your traffic is arriving via desktop/laptop.
If you sell a fun product or lifestyle product (fashion, décor, fitness, etc.), or perhaps have a blog or passion-based content site (like The Pioneer Woman and her almost cult like following), you should definitely have your website designed to be Mobile First.
Is mobile first website design important for search results and SEO?
On March 26, 2018, Google announced it is making the mobile version your site the dominant way it will index your site (how it breaks out the presentation of your site in search including which pages are listed in ther SERPs).
And while this is new, be assured, your mobile site, rather than desktop, is the site version Google is most using to determine both your site’s content and index it.
While the Google powers that be currently say mobile first isn’t yet affecting ranking. Trust us, this isn’t active yet, but it’s coming soon.
This means the Google smartphone bot, and not the desktop bot, will be most utilized. (Don’t think of bot as R2D2 or CP3O. It’s automated software agents, called code, that crawls your website to discover what is on it.)
The better optimized your site is for mobile, the better it will ultimately rank on Google. And keep in mind, user searches from a smartphone and user searches from a desktop often return different results.
If you do have a large percentage of mobile users, ask your designer if they incorporate something called AMP (accelerated mobile pages). To learn more about AMP, click here.
When you design for desktop first and then approach mobile design, the design principle is called graceful degradation.
When you start with mobile first, your designer is forced to boil down the site to the most essential features for a great user experience. Then, he or she can do additions that add non-essential value for the desktop user.
These are enhancing additions but do not change the core functionality and conversion optimization of your site. Often designers call this progressive enhancement.
If most of your traffic arrives on mobile, it is better to expand a small-screen designed mobile site than to constrict a large-screen design down to a small screen.
But, for the web designer, it is also less fun as they must consider the constricting elements of mobile before setting off on the less restrictive wild-west of desktop version. Many designers don’t like doing mobile first design because they feel it limits their artistic creativity.
It’s much easier for them to design a mind-blowing desktop experience and then dumb-it-down to mobile.
But the primary job of your designer isn’t to have fun or be artistic.
A web designer’s priority is to design your business a website that converts viewers to customers, patients, and clients on the device on which they arrive.
How does mobile first affect the actual design of my business site?
Your website should look beautiful (or cool, or luxurious, or kitschy or whatever reinforces your brand) but its PRIMARY goal is to deliver content to the end-user.
Mobile first design tends to be content-centric. The written copy of your site is clearly presented for end-users. While your site will still look great, any distracting elements (landscape photos, hover-over buttons, etc.) will not be present.
The design process is the same:
Target Audience Definition – clearly knowing who is the desired end-user.
Foundational SEO & Strategy Work (keyword research, user intent, etc.)
Content List / Sitemap – the outline of your content.
Copywriting – writing the content for your site.
Wireframe Creation – the blueprint or skeleton of how your site will lay out on mobile.
Mock-up – the color rendition of your homepage and internal pages.
Coding – turning the mock-up into working pages and merging in the written content.
Desktop Design – modification of design to add enhancing elements for the desktop.
Testing – ensuring everything is functioning at 100%
Launch – taking the site live at the active URL.
Does starting with mobile first design mean my desktop experience will be inferior?
No. Your desktop can have further enhancements off the solid foundation of your mobile responsive design. Nor do the experiences of your website viewer have to be exactly the same. Content and basic functionality should remain the same, but each design can be adjusted to take advantage of the native capabilities of each device.
If your data reveals that the same user is accessing your site on BOTH mobile and desktop, you do want to ensure your designer makes the user experience (UX) similar by not varying the user interface (UI) too much.
Here is an example of a simple enhancement on desktop…
In the presentation, what is a bulleted item on your mobile might work better as a chart on a desktop
Is consideration given on how humans interface with each device differently?
The approach and ergonomic element (how the human body, in this case, the hand) interacts with the device is a crucial consideration.
The look and layout of your site need to make logical sense, but it also needs to make ergonomic sense.
For example…
A user on a cellphone uses his or her thumb to navigate. This means the call to actions and/or actionable item on a website needs to sit near the position of the dominant thumb – near the bottom of the screen. Their thumb will also be obscuring the screen partially as they interface.
On a laptop or computer monitor, they will most likely be using a mouse which doesn’t obscure the screen. But with a mouse, you don’t want to require one click on the right side of the screen with the next click on the left side of the screen followed by a third on the right. This is to much “travel time” for the mouse, and the user will get frustrated.
Now compound this fact that many new laptops and monitors are actually touchscreens. Things can get complicated quickly.
Separating the Discount Designers from the Professional Designer
An experienced web design agency, like Moon & Owl Marketing, will weigh all things in your web design.
This is what separates the great designers from the discount designers who make “pretty websites.” Mobile first considerations, ergonomic considerations, and other criteria all go into your site planning and design.
Your Business Owner Action Checklist

main points:
- went to class
- struggles with printing
- two more evening classes
- dinner, homework, some smash, and grocery shopping
today i:
- woke up at like 8:45am ish. i was sooo tired. last night my decision to stay up making music on garageband was not smart. plus blogging late at night. i basically didn’t go to sleep until 3am. so i got like ~6 hours of sleep, which is what i got in high school but i can’t function on that much sleep nowadays
- took the T to class, got there at 9:29am just before it started. it was pretty chill. i didn’t realize we had to read each paper before each lecture, i thought it was only for wednesday nights going into thursday lectures. but the professor was lax and said that there are ~3 misses that they’ll give leeway for
- went to print out my hw for mobile app dev in the CS lab. i was having trouble cause it wasn’t printing out. i wasted like maybe 20 minutes there going back and forth from the hallway printer to the printer inside the CS lab. neither worked and the guy working there seemed pretty new so he didn’t know how to connect to the printer in the CS lab. (my mac was wiped so i lost the printer config for r2d2)
- i gave up and went to the library to print it out
- got lunch with kaita maddy and faraz at the central food court at around 11:30am. we ate until 12:20pm ish and went to class that started at 12:30pm
- i didn’t fall asleep in class but i closed my eyes for like a few minutes in class cause i was pretty tired
- after programming languages class finished at 2pm, me dimitri and brian hung around the central food court area. i worked on the rest of the programming languages lab. tried to submit but it didn’t work. apparently everyone was having issues submitting.
we goofed around with the hq bot, i hadn’t used it in weeks, it was kind of buggy but dimitri wanted to see it in action
- around 3:20pm we went to mobile app dev (i just got switched into this section over the weekend!)
it was pretty long (2 hours and 45 minutes. saw some familiar faces in this section of the class
- we stopped by a thai place near campus and then took the T home to our apt in west
- me brian and dimitri ate our thai food and watched rick and morty S3EP1 and S3EP2 since brian hadn’t seen the new season yet
- we started working on mobile app dev homework around 7:45pm. we figured we might as well start on parts of the worksheet our professor just assigned to us. we had to make a calculator app. android studio was being really whacky with the layout and kept auto aligning constraints relative to other elements even though we didn’t want it to
- eventually we finished around 11pm ish. so it took about 3 hours. there were some edge cases to our calculator that we couldn’t/didn’t have the heart to keep going since we were pretty defeated with android studio. but the app functions with basic edge cases covered
- we thought we’d have time to play fort nite for the first time tonight but because it was so late, we just decided to play smash for a bit
- at 12:08am, we stopped and dimitri and i went grocery shopping. midnight run woooo!!! it was pretty chill but i was pretty sleepy around 8pm. since i was tired from last night. we wandered around and got some groceries and then went home. dimitri taught me some basic tips of what to look for at the grocery store and such since i don’t know how to really do that in a healthy way
- i showered and now i’m in bed ready to pass out. it’s 1:18am. GOOD NIGHT

The OLD Dolphins
There are definitely many reasons why I consider myself lucky.  One of those reasons is that I've had the pleasure of knowing more than my fair share of Old Lady Dolphins.  Considering today is Mother's Day in the U.S., I think today's topic is pretty fitting.  In fact, I'd like to go even further and talk about a very special lady I got to know at my last job.
Happy mother's day!
There are probably many of you dolphin trainers (extant and extinct) who will know exactly who I'm talking about....and you probably have a lot of stories of your own to share.  So PLEASE do.
#goals
First, let's just talk about Old Lady Dolphins (herein referred to as OLDs*).  I have written about a few of these gals before (Nellie, Pebbles, Panama, Delilah) but I feel like it's worth revisiting the classification of this very special personality type.
Second, some of you work with social animals who are matriarchal in nature (I'm really looking at you, elephant keepers).  What I write today may ring true for some of the golden girls in your life, so correct me if I make this too specific to dolphins, but....
....dolphins are "special".   Like, they are the High Maintenance Animal of the universe.  I haven't talked to any extinct species, but I would be utterly shocked if we found out that deinonychus or wooly mammoths were as ridiculously dramatic as dolphins.  I mean, dolphins as a family are pretty successful evolutionarily speaking.  So the whole diva thing must really be working for them.
THAT'S what she was trying to tell me?!
This is not just a personality trait, people.  While I will admit there are laid back dolphins, most of them are basically insane.  Bottlenose dolphins are top predators.  They are so good at what they do in the wild that they have tons of free time on their hands to terrify sharks who are just trying to do shark things, like breathe, eat, and avoid human beings.   Dolphins also have a lot of sex, like to the point where I feel like it must offend other ocean creatures who struggle every day just to put food in their bellies and/or not die.
We all know that the ocean is not a quiet place, and not just because Chatty Cathy dolphins live in it.  We know that the other vertebrates and invertebrates who populate the seas make noise a lot.  Why?  Oh, I'll tell you why, and I don't need a PhD in marine blah blah blah to know that 96% of oceanic animal sounds are essentially just a bunch of critters pointing out how annoying dolphins are.
Parrot fish:  Oh great, there go the dolphins again
Sailfish:  If I see one more dolphin penis I'm gonna gag
Menhaden: How DO they find the time?
All day all night
But life is balance, right?  You may have dolphins acting like the confident, world rulers that they are....but they also poop their figurative pants because a bubble appeared 78 feet away from their left eye (little known fact: this is unacceptable to many dolphins). Oh yes, there is another side to this coin.  If there wasn't, how could dolphins survive more than a few months without having major stress-related strokes and/or psychotic breaks?
OLDs.
"HEY. HEY YOU"
OLDs are around to calm the waters, literally and figuratively.  They are the emotional bomb squad of the dolphin world.  If things have gotten entirely out of hand (you know, Flippy can't possibly sit next to Dolly, because she once moved her head too suddenly and plus she totally stole Flippy's football four years ago), you can almost always count on an OLD to settle the score.
Flippy: Oh my god seriously, if I have to station next to Dolly I am seriously going to flip out
Dolly: OMG OMG OMG OMG OKAY I WILL NEVER STATION NEAR YOU OR AROUND YOU OR IN THE SAME POOL IN FACT I WILL JUST NEVER STATION AGAIN I WILL JUST SIT IN THE CORNER AND BARF
Flippy: GOOD! But I'm still going to chase you just because I CAN
OLD:  Listen.  Both of you better grow the eff up, because I will use all 600 pounds of my beautiful self to set you straight
Oh, did I mention that most OLDs are huge?  Like, huge.  Maybe 100 pounds heavier than the other animals.  Nellie had rock hard abs, not even kidding.
How DOES she find the time?
They command respect, but not usually through aggression (although it may come to that in extreme cases).  OLDs use leadership skills that many animal trainers could stand to follow once they get a senior or supervisor title next to their names (sorry not sorry, it's true).  Most of the time, they are the dolphin everyone wants to be with.  They are the dolphin that swims past and everyone just stares in admiration.  And when someone steps out of line, they do the least amount of nastiness possible, returning quickly to their calm, wonderful selves.
Got the picture?  Good.  Now let's talk about Nani.
Squeeeeeee
Nani was the oldest dolphin at National Aquarium, who unfortunately passed away a couple of months ago. I was privileged to get to know her, and work with her.  Um. Work FOR her.
Nani was the queen of the clan.  She had a way about her that made all mammals near her - humans and dolphins alike- instantly fall in love.  Maybe it was her gorgeous, dark skin.  Maybe it was her little teddy bear eyes.  Or maybe it was because she was smarter than everyone she knew.
"Did you get my snacks yet?"
While I only worked with her for eight short months, I racked up a good amount of Nani stories in which I was further made aware of my puny standing as a naked ape.  For example, like many OLDs, she had figured out that hanging on to her toys at the end of the day meant she would get an extra snack.  However, she was one of the only OLDs I knew who would approach you, let go of her toy and place it JUST out of reach, and try to house the extra fish you were feeding the other dolphins for stationing.  And you know what?
Not a single dolphin dared taking that toy.  Every other place I have worked, if anyone (OLD or otherwise) let go of a contraband toy, someone else snatched it up.  But not with Nani.  Those rare times another dolphin attempted to steal the leverage, Nani pulled her Boss Lady card and the mistake was not repeated.
Yes, Miss Nani.
She also completely controlled husbandry training of her kids.  Her adult kids.  Now, that might not surprise some of you when you think about how female bottlenose dolphins stay with their moms their entire lives in most cases.  So yeah, when her daughter Spirit was in a blood layout, Nani would sometimes come over and yell at both human and dolphin, causing Spirit to kick out of the layout.  Pretty sure Nani knew this maneuver would result in lots of splashing that filled up our boots with water so we had gross, soggy whitefeet for the entire day.
Actual dolphin trainer foot
But she also did this with her adult son.  As is typical, Nani did not live with her adult son Beau.  And still, when he was in a blood layout, she would interfere in some way from entirely different habitats.  And he, the obedient momma's boy, would immediately stop what he was doing, as if he was just caught doing something wrong.
Nani: BEAU! BEAU BEAU.  ARE YOU IN A BLOOD LAYOUT IN THERE?
Beau: NO! No ma! I don't know what you're talking about, I would never do that! No!
"If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times.  You don't let those two-legged freaks touch your precious flukes."
There were many attempts to smooth this issue with training, with some success.  According to trainers who had been there a while, Nani had gotten much better and most times, you could work your husbandry approximations without interference.  Correction: whatever we did made Nani comfortable ALLOWING us to continue.  But every once in a while, she had to remind all of us who was really in charge.
Like all OLDs I knew, she was extremely maternal.  Not just towards dolphins, either.  She stared at human babies like they belonged to her. Maybe that creeps some of you put, but I thought it was pretty adorable.
Nani (left) and her daughter Spirit staring at me and my daughter!
Nani filled a lot of hearts over a long period of time. She was an extremely bright, confident animal who knew how to keep a family together. Her loss was and still is profoundly felt.  She is definitely one of the most memorable OLDs I have ever met. And if you never had the honor of knowing her, I hope you feel like you knew her after reading this.
Thank you, sweet Nani.
:)
______________
OMG...I so did NOT even intend for that acronym to work out so perfectly.  I'd love to have you all believe I'm some sort of English wordsmith genius but too many of you know me for who I really am: a former dolphin trainer who really wishes she was R2D2.

New Post has been published on https://globeinform.com/at-the-same-time-as-a-few-robots-learn-how-to-supply-pizza/
At the same time as a few robots learn how to supply pizza
SAN FRANCISCO: Even as Silicon Valley touts new robots so that it will greet you at the airport, supply Cheetos in your motel room or get you a pizza in a rush, other machines have had greater severe jobs for decades.
Take Northrop Grumman Remotec’s merchandise. The robotics department of the defense contractor commenced lifestyles greater than two decades in the past as a maker of machines that pass radioactive substances around authorities research labs. From there, the devices advanced into bomb-disposal aids and were despatched into other situations that the army or law enforcement deemed too volatile for humans.
The Remote bots were additionally given the capacity to rip open a car, sniff out risky chemicals, cut a vest off a suicide bomber, blast an explosive with water to render it secure and fireplace weapons at humans.
They are able to see in the dark, climb stairs, communicate with hostages and hostage takers, and raise greater than the burden of an average individual quite simply.
Similarly to their use in Israel and Iraq through the army, more than 400 police departments in the US have them. Northrop Grumman reckons that variety will upward push as perceived threats growth, developing demand more powerful and capable robots.
For the California Toll road Patrol (CHP) and other law enforcement businesses national, robots have been one of the tools they obtained within the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks in 2001. The CHP group uses a Northrop Grumman robot it were given in 2005 for bomb disposal and other protection tasks.
In an attack path behind Northrop Grumman Corp’s plant in Clinton, Tennessee, the modern day robot, the FX, climbed stairs and squeezed thru slim spaces with no trouble, notwithstanding its 900-pound bulk. Constructed with remarks from customers, it is a lot larger than predecessors and has an arm capable of almost balletic articulation – even Even as lifting a car door via grasping the thin window frame.
“within the past, a robotic ought to select up commonly one hundred pounds,” said Walt Werner, director of Northrop Grumman Remotec. “A number of the bombs which have been positioned in automobiles are much heavier.” The bomb planted in NY’s Times Square in 2010 became too heavy for robots to pick out up, he cited.
It’s dangerous work, even for robots. While the FX rolled out to the take a look at the range, it handed an older model nonetheless displaying the harm it sustained seeking to defuse a bomb in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 2016.
The organization is happy with its robots’ record in saving lives. Engineers are on name night time and day to diagnose problems and ensure the robots are there for clients in emergencies.
They also repair machines that have been damaged past economic repair due to the fact their owners have come to be connected to them and want them back.
The maximum controversial use of one of the robots got here in Dallas remaining July When a US army veteran killed five policemen and wounded seven others.
A Remotec robot was used to detonate an explosive subsequent to the shooter. He saw it coming and shot at it, however, couldn’t forestall it. The unit survived his attack and the explosion which killed the man. Northrop Grumman doesn’t speak such incidents and refers inquiries to the owners and operators of its merchandise.
a few tech companies are looking to create an international where all and sundry has an independent robot helper. Northrop Grumman says its robots gained be left alone to take the life-or-dying choices that their human operators every now and then ought to make.
Northrop’s customers agree that a future wherein robots can carry out the whole variety of regulation enforcement jobs isn’t going to take place in our lifetimes.“There’s simply too many steps, too many troubles concerned there in terms of protection and ramifications to actions to just ship a robotic,” stated the CHP’s Kessler. “You want the human element worried.” – Bloomberg
Robots and robotic Kits in Our Lives
We all saw robots in movies. within the starting, bots had been just steal things that regarded funny. As the time handed, movies have become more superior, movie robots had extra functions and that they acted like humans greater regularly. Incredible examples had been 3CPO and R2D2 from Famous person wars and sooner or later Information from Famous person trek. Ok, those shows were technological know-how fiction and ultra-modern robots nonetheless aren’t that superior.
Nevertheless, cutting-edge boats have a Splendid role in our lives. Robotics is advancing pretty fast. it’s far due to the fact electronics and mechanics are the regions that advance fast too. One greater location that is immediately affecting robotics is IT. Software improvement made possible to the application the robotic for doing complicated obligations. First programmable robots had Software in VAL language. After that, there had been Roboforth, RoboLogix, URBI and so forth. Nowadays there was Software with GUIs and consumer friendly interfaces that permit smooth programming of a few robotic kits. Now all and sundry can program robot kits, now not just IT geeks.
Due to that, there are all styles of robot kits on market. You could discover primary kits for a couple of bucks and expert ones that can mimic human moves and do complicated responsibilities. Relying on your budget, You can get all forms of thrilling robots, application them and have fun. Scare your dog or cat as an example. Robotics have become a Splendid hobby for every technology. the most well-known location is robot wars. people construct bots and connect lethal guns on them (deadly to other robots of the path). There are communities that organize robotic battles and tournaments. Winners get very profitable expenses.
Beside hobby robot kits, there are robots that assist handicap human beings, build vehicles and computer systems, assist within the farms, assist collecting Facts for astronauts and each different location that You can think of. There’s no product on the market this is designed or developed without the help of robotic. humans do not must do tough paintings and be in chance conditions anymore. There are robots that assist to find survivors and are High-quality addition to rescue squads like Gemini-Scout. maximum low-cost ones are robot vacuum cleaners. They sincerely help in homes and keep it slow.
In one sentence, robots became irreplaceable devices in our lives. We don’t note that however, if all of the robots all of sudden stop operating, we might have large problems. Who knows what brings the future. All we recognize, robots may be increasingly advanced, and it’ll affect us even more. Permit’s just hoped that Terminator state of affairs will not happen.
Robots For Children international Ebook Dictionary defines a robot as “a gadget made in imitation of an individual; a mechanical device that does ordinary work in reaction to instructions.” I met my first robotic in 1979 at the Texas Units plant in Austin, where it delivered mail. regardless of early promises to the opposite, robots nowadays are found no longer in the home, however ordinarily in factories. And despite the fact that there are robots produced from Legos, There may be no robotic designed to select Legos up from the ground. I, however, stay hopeful. Find out more at the subsequent websites.
Design Your Very own robotic
“Robots are available all styles and sizes. but what does it take to Layout one?” You’re about to study. First, you will be assigned a challenge to your robotic. Will it be to search a sunken deliver for gold? Or to discover the floor of Mars? Layout your robot by using choosing factors for six primary capabilities: sensing, movement, manipulation, energy, intelligence and looks. While finished, you will view your robot and your Layout may be critiqued. This definitely tremendous workout calls for the unfastened Shockwave plug-in. Get it now.
Get a Grip on Robotics
This exhibit explores the jointed-arm robot which “appears just like a positive a part of your frame.” Each direction a joint can pass gives the robot one diploma of freedom. So, a robotic arm with three degrees of freedom can flow in three ways: up/down, left/proper, and forward/backward. even though a few robots have six, 8 or maybe twelve degrees of freedom, six is sufficient for most primary duties, and therefore most working robotic fingers have six degrees of freedom. The human arm, but, has seven. Find out which motion you have that most robotic arms do no longer.
Robots and Space Toys
Robby the robotic isn’t always the cutting-edge student venture from M.I.T. He is a conventional robotic toy. Brian Hayes of Britain shares with us his passion for gathering antique robot and Space toys. To view these gem stones from the 1950s and 1960s, visit his robot Gallery and classic Plastic. In case you marvel how a lot that robotic toy observed to your attic is really worth, Brian has a bulletin board and posts loose classified ads.
