The traditionally Christian holiday of Christmas is celebrated by right and left-wingers alike, but for Pastafarians like myself, it can be difficult to know how to bring a festive spirit to the holiday season without undermining our beliefs in our great noodley overlord. In our tradition (circa 2005), every Friday is a religious holiday, but if we want to fit in with our many Christian colleagues, we’ve got to adopt some of their traditions as well. Here is a quick guide for fitting in this holiday season without betraying your pasta-related beliefs in the Flying Spaghetti Monster:
1. The “Christmas” Tree
In order to blend in with our Christian neighbors, we Pastafarians often adopt the same evergreen tree around the holiday season. While Christians top the tree with an angel or star, we Pastafarians adorn our trees with noodly representations of our Lord and Savior, the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I know that this seems strange, but it’s just a part of our beliefs, and honestly, it fits in better than the non-perennial Jewish Menorah or Kwanzaa Kinara.
Tumblr media
2. The Exchange of Gifts
In Pastafarian religion, the offer of gifts is usually seen as a sign of goodwill and transcendent of the time of year.  Generally speaking, Pastafarians give gifts when they feel the other party needs said gift, but because the traditions of the Christian season demand an exchange, it is perfectly reasonable for Pastafarians to join in and contribute. Make sure your gifts are logical and interesting for the other party. While it’s great to give gifts for the sake of the season, it’s even better if your gifts are relevant and necessary for the receiver. Spaghetti strainers and home-made marinara sauces are excellent gifts for traditional Pastafarians.
3. Lighting and Decorations
Most Pastafarians believe that decorating your home is not a function of the time of year, but rather a result of the connection you feel to the noodley great one. Even so, if all your neighbors are putting up lights, why not join in the fun? Pastafarian decorating – like Christmas decorating – usually involves an homage to our Lord and Savior, so putting up a creative design to honor the Great Noodley One is never a bad idea. It might even win you a decorative competition!
Tumblr media
4. The Nativity Scene
It’s pretty easy to adjust a traditionally Christian nativity scene to fit your Pastafarian beliefs. Just remove the infant Jesus figure and replace him with an al dente version of your favorite Italian delight. Most of your Christian friends won’t even notice the change, and for those who ask, you get the opportunity to bear witness to your noodley savior!
Tumblr media
5. The Christmas Meal
Ham or Turkey are normally the center of Christian Christmases , but as a Pastafarian, you know you’ve got to bring a few carbohydrates to this meal. If you feel that you must compromise, Turkey Spaghetti or Ham and Pasta Soup would both be great middle grounds. That way, you’re including your noodley lord as well as the traditional meats of the season.
If you’ve got your own Pastafarian traditions for the Holidays, let me know about them in the comments below, and in the mean time, may the Great Noodley One be with you!

The Slow Fashion Movement (Week 6)
The fashion industry is one of the most significant sources of pollution (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022, 2860-1), from the rapid rate at which clothing is produced to how quickly it is disposed of. This is emblematic of the broader issue with fast fashion: its prioritisation of consumerism over ethics, which has become increasingly detrimental not only in pollution, but also notably in carbon emission, landfill (cheap synthetic materials) and poor working conditions (sweatshops).
‘The goal of fast fashion companies is to produce the most amount of fashionable and trendy apparel in the shortest amount of time, so consumers can keep up with the fast and ever-changing trend cycles and want to consume more products’ (Mehrjoo & Pasek cited in Chi et al. 2021, p. 101).
Tumblr media
To counter this, the slow fashion movement has been gaining traction. Slow fashion refers to the ‘change in core values in the fashion industry’ (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022, 2860-1) to be more sustainable. This is evident through the idea of Corporate Social Responsibility, in which companies ‘help modify behaviour by raising awareness and generating consumer pressure on other companies to follow the higher ethical standards’ (Brewer 2019, 1902-6). For instance, The Common Good Company has a portion of their website dedicated to sustainability, and backs it up with verifiable evidence.
The discussion surrounding sustainability largely takes place online between digital citizens. This includes Corporate Social Responsibility as well as consumers who tend to emphasise the ‘humanitarian’ (Ladstatter 2019) aspect of slow fashion, as they are aware of the consequences of fast fashion. Special focus is placed on the quality and timelessness of their clothing purchases, in an attempt to ensure that the clothes that these consumers do buy will be sufficiently worn and used. A topical way this is addressed is through the ‘thrifting’ trend in youth culture, as clothes are given another chance to be used instead of ending up in landfills. Furthermore, finding long-lasting, quality ‘vintage’ clothing is heralded, as these pieces are often unique—and thus more valuable (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022, 2860-9).
Tumblr media
Hopefully, the awareness surrounding fast fashion and the subsequent push for slow fashion will create a higher standard of ethics for clothing production.

Online Gaming, Livestreamers and the Perks of Gamer Anonymity
From an article on the gaming industry’s sudden boom, Khajuria writes, ‘Gaming, which was once restricted to only the privileged younger generation having access to personal PCs or consoles, is now a mass favourite with no age barriers.’ That’s about the best way I could put it! The world of social gaming has only expanded as technology has developed. Gaming in itself is very much a community-based hobby, so it's only natural that online groups dedicated to it have emerged and grown over time. Some people join smaller, more local groups, while others expand to the world of content creation (eg. Youtubers and livestreamers). However, many individuals in most of these groups all have something in common; they benefit from and exploit anonymity.
Tumblr media
When it comes to the content creation side of this, there are very popular gamers who are obvious exceptions to this rule. Youtubers such as Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and Pewdiepie have all earned followings of over 20 million subscribers by posting their playthroughs of video games, all with their own faces visible in them. However, getting to control your image on the internet gives you power, and other gamers are no exception. Streamers like Dream, who don’t show their faces at all for a long period of time, give their audience room to speculate and fantasise about their true identities, upping intrigue and exposure. In Dream’s case, the Internet’s brutal response to his ‘face reveal’ proves how much power his anonymity actually held. The hashtag that trended afterwards, #PutTheMaskBackOn, can speak for itself. (Placido, 2022)
On a smaller scale, the anonymity online gaming provides can lead to the harassment of minorities within gaming spaces. Unsurprisingly, women often face the brunt of this discrimination. In general, gaming has been described as a hypermasculine, antifeminist field. This is because sexist online trolls are free to dogpile female gamers under the mask of anonymity, to the point of ‘threatening (them) with graphic and sexual violence’. (Kate, 2014) But it’s not only women. Racism and homophobia also run rampant in online gaming spaces, and with anonymity freeing harassers from consequences they are only going to get worse.

Week 8, The Impact of Snapchats Filter to Young People.
Snapchat is a well-known social media that is now very popular among young people that allows users to send a picture or a video to their contacts. According to (Baker 2020, p. 208) Users can incorporate augmented reality into their daily clothing routines and self-presentation by using these filters to add virtual accessories and change facial characteristics. There are various types of filters provided and they can be fun to use, but on the other hand they have some negative consequences.
These filters have several drawbacks, one of which is that they promote a limited and false beauty ideal. By taking a user's characteristics and altering them to conform to a stereotypical definition of beauty, Snapchat thins down the face, slims and shortens the nose, enlarges the eyes, plumps the lips, and evens out the skin (Baker 2020, p. 209). Users who feel they do not meet these standards may experience feelings of inadequacy and insecurity, especially among young people who may be more susceptible to these messages. There are some indications that young women use Snapchat filters and other photo editing tools in a particularly frightening way, altering their appearance in photos to the extent that their authentic selves are no longer acceptable (Habib, Ali, Nazir & Mahfooz 2022, p. 1).
Tumblr media
The effect of these filters on mental health is another issue of great concern. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America claims that these applications are causing people to have a distorted perception of who they are and to dwell on their imperfections, a condition known as body dysmorphic disorder (Uloop, Inc Carlsbad 2018 p. 1). It is important to understand how daily exposure to these finely edited and carefully filtered photos by this app causes everyday women to lose touch with reality because these depictions are less common than those seen in mainstream media according to (Habib, Ali, Nazir & Mahfooz 2022, p. 1).
This sentiment of dissatisfaction can be exacerbated by the frequent use of filters and the pressure to project the perfect image, which can be harmful to mental health. The importance of being able to control the use of filters in existing apps is an important factor in remaining self-accepting. Picking and choosing what is appropriate to have fun with these filters is a consideration that we must think about so that nothing happens that we don't want.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP 1: POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT
Do you know that social media has already been used to communicate with a large audience by a politician since 2008?
Tumblr media
The United States’ president was called Barack Obama, used social media to educate, entertain the public and form his legacy. In 2017, white house officials also used this method to attract public attention. They believe presidents should not only rely on press conferences or interviews with a journalist to deliver messages to the public as most Americans nowadays receive news online (Freking 2017).
What is political engagement?
Tumblr media
You may hear or read this political definition about “who gets what, when and how”. It can be interpreted Politic as material goods distributions during post-world war II. However, this term has been opposed in few decades because politics is not about distribution, but it also involves culture, identity, and others. So, politics can refer to the governments or its citizens' activities that attempt to affect a country's settings (Boswell 2020).
Political engagement involves the wide society in political activities such as election voting, discussing with other people on issues, helping the political campaign, and others. By engaging in political activities, citizens can influence politicians' actions directly and indirectly (Uhlaner 2015, p. 504).
Social media + politic = 100% good???
Tumblr media
Social media is an internet communication tool that allows people to create, share content and interact with the public immediately. In politics, social media helps in citizen engagements and builds public trust as it helps citizens keep informed with critical information, policy, and issues such as telling citizens to stay at home/ less do activities outdoors during pandemic covid-19. It also allows politicians to see analytic data of people who have seen the news based on their demographics and help specific situations. For example, during a presidential election, politicians can message people who have not voted for their candidate yet. However, there are some drawbacks to social media. Bots can disturb politics by giving unreliable sources and even affecting election outcomes because they can create fake profiles that no one may not know whether the people are real. Moreover, it may make people stay to their perspectives as they only search or see others' same ideas (Bromfield 2018).
Malaysia is considered one of the most digitally connected countries. Social media has already become a norm for Malaysians to deliver information, fund-raising, sharing ideas, and other activities, including politicians. In fact, the opposing party won the 14th general elections named Pakatan Harapan for using social media to gain citizens' trust. Social media helps to engage young people to participate in politics. It recorded that during the 2018 Malaysian election commission, the ages between 21 to 39 have voted for 41%. Social media also helps raise people's voices to be heard, such as the trending #PulangMengundi which means voting at home. Furthermore, it brings people to connect, for example, in the election with some Malaysians living abroad who cannot participate. Nevertheless, it can have disadvantageous effects such as false reports, bots, edit political leaders' photographs. For instance, #UndiRosak is used on Twitter to corrupt the vote (Debra Grace 2018).
Overall, political engagement and social media are mutually beneficial to each other. Combining both can give all users good experiences because it gives many advantages, such as delivering important news fast. Despite this, it can also give bad experiences if some users use it for fun purposes, such as giving fake news to cause a panic situation for citizens.

Autism Speaks releases annual reports which include a breakdown of their finances. What is horrifying is that hardly any money they raise actually benefits autistic people. A mere 4% goes to “family services,” and while research is 44% of the budget, most of it is solely focused on “prevention.” Instead of working to help autistic people who are already alive, Autism Speaks would prefer to try to eradicate autism in unborn children. Which, by the way, has been entirely unsuccessful. From the little bit of money that remains to help real autistic people and their families, it’s incredibly difficult to come by any of it. The stories of families in need of help who couldn’t squeeze a penny out of Autism Speaks are numerous.

GET BACK WITH WEEK 6: What is digital citizenship? How social media is changing the election process.
This week has focused on the use of social media for political purposes. Social media is being used primarily by political parties, members, who once supported politicians as part of a media campaign. The basis of social media is the ideal of increasing participation in democracy, politics, and what we call civil society.
Media has given people a lot of information and how it is perceived. What is digital citizenship? A person with the knowledge and skills to use digital technologies to communicate, engage, express, produce content for an audience (Mossberger et al, 2007). Some examples of Digital Citizenship are communication with the utmost respect, respect for the privacy of each individual, help by giving helpful feedback, etc. (Heick, 2018). For a large number of individuals, social media is the place to receive political news, more specifically, party and political members will use the media to capture the situation.
However, when the media holds, politicians will gain more power on how they can reach out to citizens. In other words, politicians can post messages that reach billions of people. One aspect is to affirm that the media has become a powerful communication tool because it can provide a lot of feedback (Bromfield, 2018). However, when there are too many different opinions, the opinions of each individual will be changed even though you do not know which answers they will choose. In another, for hashtag, #Auspol, short for Australian Politics, is being used on media like Twitter to engage Australians in political conversations. More specifically, the combination with the hashtag creates a chaotic space for political debate, and this makes the political system an uncomfortable environment (Bogle, 2016).
Digital Citizens play a key role in the election because people can freely express their opinions and this leads to independence. The unforgettable U.S. story of the fake news that spread around Donald Trump in the 2016 federal elections led to much concern about the multi-campaign campaign approach with the use of social media, Trump uses twitter to post positive content on social media and this makes him have a good position for the community in the election. While 82% of Clinton Cameron's tweets are classified as media, for Trump, the style of founding standards is only 38%. Similarly, nearly 55% of Trump's tweet is unique, in contrast to only 13% of Clinton tweets (Enli, 2017)

Beauty Filters, The Makeup Industry and Roots in Eurocentrism
Since we’ve covered body image on social media, let’s go over one of the most prominent forms of photo-editing devices; beauty filters. Instagram, Snapchat and many other applications all have some form of face filters built into them. Some are harmless, simply warping the face to absurd degrees and adding funny features as a means of entertainment. By comparison, the beauty filters that simply add makeup to one’s face seem equally as harmless. However, filters like these can be exceptionally damaging to young teens, encouraging them to change their faces in real life to reach their “perfect” filtered selves. (Pescott 2023) It truly never ends when it comes to social media messing up womens’ self-image.
Tumblr media
So, where does the makeup industry come into this? Simply put, it exploits the hell out of the insecurity these filters breed. In response to the growing usage of beauty filters, makeup brands have started to promote their products in a way that’ll hit the grievances they produce head-on. Emphasis is placed on recreating ‘Instagram-worthy’ makeup, promising the illusion of the ‘perfect’ face outside of a camera (Barker, 2020). Of course, no amount of makeup will ever recreate the eerily perfect ‘airbrushed’ look that filters give. Furthermore, some features that are considered ugly can’t be erased with any amount of makeup. Not that they should even be referred to as ugly to begin with.
This whole phenomenon circles back to Eurocentrism, because anything relating to beauty standards always does. Thin lips, fair skin and cute, button noses are all distinctly white features, and their depiction as the gold standard of beauty is rooted deep in racism and Eurocentric ideals. An article by an Asian American woman on the topic reads, ‘The commonality between the experiences of Asian Americans is rooted in the idea that Anglo-American features are better than other features. Underrepresentation in this realm has conditioned me to believe that my small, non-white eyes can never be beautiful.’ (Kang, 2021) While white women may still suffer from these beauty standards, it’s downright impossible for women of colour to reach them because they were literally built around their exclusion. Thanks, white people.
