a restless truth
finished mid dec 22
STUNNING sequel. i absolutely adored maud, and the plot was so fun and well executed, continuing from the first book while still staying fresh and surprising. i loved seeing more of earlier characters, as well as a new romance which was absolutely superb. my favorite sequence still has to be them letting the animals loose as a distraction, very vivid mental image there. overall definitely a fave, and i cant wait for the next installment!

Hellsite Detective in...
The Bad Banana
it was another cool day in Tumblr City. the breeze was blowin' through the streets and the rain was poundin' down hard against my window. the ceilin' fan that hung above me spun slowly and hypnotically as if blown by a wind that wasn't present. as i sat there in my chair, smokin' my cigar and watchin' that fan spin eternally, i grew hungry. thankfully i keep a small fruit bowl in the corner. gettin' up to go grab a bite, i picked a banana out of the bowl. it was a bright yellow, but you might not have known it from the monochromatic filter over the scene. as i began to unpeel it, a voice spoke from the back of my head sayin'...
...hold on...
...go ahead...
...what...
naturally confused, i spun around to see if someone had snuck in while my back was turned. but no, no one was there. however, the words continued to resound in my head. almost like they were callin' me to somethin'. i walked over to the window and took a look outside and the traffic lights at the intersection caught my eye. i looked at them, and looked back at the banana in my hand. that's when it hit me...
see, there was a post i've been lookin' for for ages. in fact, it was the post that inspired me to open my office up in the first place. it was a post comparin' the colors on bananas to the colors on traffic lights. back then, i couldn't find it. but now? i had the experience i needed. i decided to re-open this personal case of mine.
i tucked the banana into my coat and strolled through the rainy streets. i came across that hoppin' joint with jazz music always pourin' out the doors onto the street. the neon sign above the door read "The Search Bar." i headed inside, ready to do some business with my associate, but they were nowhere to be seen. they weren't sittin' at their normal booth. curious, i decided to ask the new robot bartender for help...
say, doll, you know where i can find the Boss?
[Oh! I do apologize. Don Google is upstairs in their office, but they are not seeing any visitors today.]
heh, well we'll see about that, won't we? say, what's your name?
[I am H.A.V.E.N. It stands for Hostess Attending to Virtual and Informational Needs. Essentially, my purpose is to keep track of Don Google's database so they do not have to. I also serve the drinks.]
Haven, huh? nice to meetcha, Haven. i gotta go see the Don though, whether they like it or not. i'll be seein' you later.
i tipped my hat to Haven and walked to the door leadin' to the stairwell. my mind lingered on the robotic hostess, wonderin' what an advanced artificial intelligence construct like her was doin' in this world that had it's basis in 1940's noir, but i wasn't gonna think about it too much. i headed up the stairs and into the Don's office. their goons whipped out their guns and almost took my head clean off, but the big fella themself stopped it.
the office was a far cry from the bustlin' night club on the first floor. where as the club had neon lights and kept things rather dark, probably for the best, the office was more well lit and elegant. it held a more warm atmosphere than the club, but somehow it was more oppressive in here. the walls appeared to be made of wood, bookshelves lined the walls, and a chandelier hung from the ceilin'. there was a carpet in the center of the room that had a kaleidoscope of colors rangin' from blue, red, yellow, and green. and directly across from the door was the desk. mahogany, it seemed, and real fancy too. a giant round window overlookin' the city streets was placed behind it with a large letter "G" formed in the window frames. the Don spun around in their large leather chair and puffed on their cigar.
"'Ey there, Miss Detective. What can I do ya for?"
i'm lookin' for a post involvin' bananas. specifically in relation to traffic lights. you got anythin' like that for me?"
i set the banana i had brought down on the desk and they chuckled at the sight.
"Yea, I think I got what your lookin' for."
with a wave of their hand, one of their goons fetched a file from off one of the shelves and brought it over to them. they thumbed it open with one hand, the other hand draggin' on the cigar. they slid it across the desk.
"This what your lookin' for?"
and there it was. the post that started it all. it had finally come full circle. i grabbed the file eagerly and began to leave the room, but the Don wasn't finished with me yet.
"'Ey, Miss Detective! Don't think I've forgotten about that little favor you owe me..."
i stopped dead in my tracks. preparin' myself for the worst, i stood there frozen. i couldn't even turn around to look at them. but shockingly, the conversation took a different turn.
"I'm not lookin' to cash that in just yet. Just be on the look out for a call, got it? I'm lookin' forward to our partnership."
i couldn't see them, but i knew their snide smile was bearing down on me at that moment. fear filling my body, i left the lion's den and went back to my humble office to file my prize away. as i did so, my stomach rumbled...
damn it. i left the banana with the Don...

i always say people complaining about enemies to lovers that are too tame, like “oh but they weren’t real enemies, they just hated each other and argued and thought the other was hot” and that’s valid but also. that’s exactly what i want. the ideal dynamic is two catty bitches sighing and going “well, i guess i have to fuck him”

A Power Unbound - Freya Marske
Tumblr media
★★★★★ (5/5)
Date Started: 10 February 2024 Date Finished: 16 February 2024
"The past could turn you into a strip of paper with a single side, so that comfort and vulnerability slid away down the invisible channels and couldn't be grasped."
Kind of funny to post only a review for the final book in a trilogy, but unfortunately this blog didn't exist when I read the first two, so consider this my personal review for the series overall. Note: It is going to be a glorious, glowing and raving review focusing on this third book overall as it is what primarily weighs on my mind. All three of these books are firm 5 star ratings in my heart of hearts, and I will not budge on the matter.
I'm already a well established fan of historical fantasy, so when I stumbled upon A Marvellous Light back when I still worked at Barnes and Noble it felt like a matter of fate. I was in love with the world from the start and knew I would read as many books as it took to get to the end of the overarching plot line. A Restless Truth enchanted me just as much as the first book, though in a completely new and different sort of way. It was refreshing and fun and left me in dire anticipation for the release of the final book of the trilogy.
And that brings us to A Power Unbound. A book hasn't stressed me out as much as this one did in ages. And I mean that in a good way, of course! The stakes felt appropriately high, and that meant they felt apocalyptic. It might seem impossible to weave a romance within the lines of a book of apocalyptic stakes, but Freya Marske absolutely managed it.
The violent, aggressive, off-putting love between Alan and Lord Hawthorne felt just as desperate as everything else. It was a force to be reckoned with, and it knocked me off my feet every chance it had. Robin and Edwin may still be my favorite couple, but the romance between Alan and Jack definitely felt the most satisfying. Maybe it's because it was at least partially stretched across two books - maybe it was just because it was so... Well, everything it was. I don't know, but I did love every second of it. I don't like to talk plot much when I review books, because I personally hate reading a glorified summary when I seek out other reviews, but I can tell you that this book wrapped up everything perfectly. The ending was satisfying in more ways than one, and the epilogue perfectly reminded me how much I loved every single character throughout this series. I could not recommend this series any more intensely. If you are searching for a wonderful queer fantasy, it's waiting for you here.
I can't wait to see what Freya Marske writes next. I promise I will be a dedicated reader for life.
And with that:
"I would take your heart between my ribs and guard it like my own. Is there any way I could make you believe it?"

📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😍 Till there were no more wolves in the West (dharmashark) - 71K, stucky, USAmer civil war/western setting - incredibly skillful job fitting canon events believably into this setting - absolutely loved it. Also adored the Logan cameo
😍 A Restless Truth (The Last Binding #2) (Freya Marske, author; Aysha Kala, narrator) - reread in prep for final book, having book 1 fresh in mind was great, lots of small details I had missed
🥰 A Power Unbound (The Last Binding #3) (Freya Marske, author; Josh Dylan, narrator) - Very satisfying conclusion to the series! Really loved seeing everyone together again and while I don't disagree with those that say it focused more on the plot than on Jack/Alan's relationship, this wasn't a negative for me. I wanted all the juicy goodness about systems of magic and magical houses. SO MUCH MAGIC HOUSE STUFF! (p sure there was a sideways little nod 'stately home of wiltshire'!)
😍 All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) (Martha Wells, author; Kevin R Free, narrator) - Murderbot reread in prep for System Collapse
💖💖 +81K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Unsolicited Cake (Stevieschrodinger) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 4K - short but cute af wrong number AU
Of Scars and of Wounds in the Heart (Dira Sudis (dsudis)) - Green Men Series (KJ Charles): Barney/Max, 3K - "Max is in a state, and Barney helps him through it." feat. some first rate tentacle sex
I Wanna Hurry Home To You (hawkeyedpeas (pandacowhipster)) - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Edgin/Xenk, 16K - Ed & Xenk are basically married for a while before they realize it; really love how this author writes these characters
For Want of a Bookman (phoenixflight) - crossover of KJ Charles' Band Sinister & Society of Gentlemen series, 7K - delightful 'what if' of how the Ricardians and the Murder might meet & mingle
The Buried Treasure Racket (Dorinda) - The Sting: Henry/Johnny, 26K - amazing fic of the next con Henry & Johnny run

14, 20 for the book asks
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
[looks at the stack of like 30 just-barely-started books on the coffee table to my left] no comment
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
I had a lot!
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske, third book in the last binding trilogy: mostly, yes, although I was expecting a more spectacular conclusion. It was still satisfying.
The two new October Daye books: I really enjoyed Toby's and it met or exceeded my expectations. I love AU/AU-ish stuff and seeing what was the same/what was different in the illusion world was super interesting. I loved the planning and the conclusion. I didn't enjoy Tybalt's book as much--I've never loved his POV (even though I like him) and of course I already knew a lot of what was going to happen. I did appreciate seeing some of the stuff we didn't see in the Toby book.
The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson, a cosmere book: well this was... the least bad... of the secret project books... At least it was about Sigzil, I do love him. (So as you can probably guess from this entry, the secret project books fell VERY short of my expectations.)
Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher: slapped, as always. Solidly at the level of my expectations because I expect any given T. Kingfisher to be great.
Translation State by Ann Leckie, standalone-ish in the Imperial Radch-verse: incredible show-stopping brilliant she's done it again exceeded my already-high expectations.
Yellowface by R. F. Kuang: vastly exceeded my expectations because I've had mixed feelings about her other work and I loved this.
No One Will Come Back For Us by Premee Mohamed, short stories, one in the world of the beneath the rising series: honestly I devoured these so quickly that I have no opinion. I need to reread them and savor them.
To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquil Blackgoose: BOOK OF THE FUCKING YEAR!!! MY EXPECTATIONS WERE MODERATELY HIGH AND THAT WAS TOO FUCKING LOW!!!
The Sinister Booksellers of Bath by Garth Nix, second in left-handed booksellers of london series: mm delicious. Solidly at expectation level.
All the Hidden Paths by Foz Meadows, second in the tithenai series: ask me in like two or three days, it's out tomorrow.
