A Night in the Lonesome October (1993) was Roger Zelazny’s last novel published during his lifetime and it remains one of my all time favorite books. I’ve read it…so many times I’ve lost count? Each chapter is a day of the month, like a spooky advent calendar, and that sort of lent itself to annual readings for a long time.
The idea is that every time there is a full moon on Halloween, the boundaries between world grow thin. Enterprising folks desiring fundamental change generally gather to open the door to the old ones, while others stand to keep the door closed. It plays out as a sort of game, with identities, allegiances and powers kept secret until the last possible moment. Thus far, the closers have always one, but on this particular Halloween in the late 1800s, there’s no telling who will win the night. That’s because the players are a cast of familiar faces — the Great Detective, the Count, the Good Doctor and his Experiment Man, a man named Jack who’s good with a knife. Each has a familiar. Jack’s is a dog named Snuff: he narrates the tale.
There’s something about how it all comes together — the anthropomorphic animals, the references to classic horror films and stories, the hidden agendas and Gahan Wilson’s delightfully creepy illustrations. It’s a hoot. I love it. I think more folks should read it, but it seems destined to be beloved by a small but loyal readership.
James Warhola did the cover — it’s a bit smooth for my taste, but I admit, I’ve puzzled over who is who in it for many hours at this point.

Been to long since I did a Spooky Season picture, so here’s Jack and Jill and Snuff and Graymalk from the delightful book “A Night in the Lonesome October” by Roger Zelazny which I am very much enjoying reading for the first time this month.
If you like Classic Victorian Horror Icons, the Cthulhu Mythos, talking animals and bringing in the apocalypse then give it a read it’s really fun!

Oooh so I bought A Night in the Lonesome October and tried to read a chapter each day last year, but I missed a couple of days and eventually gave up, thinking I'd do it this year instead.
Tumblr media
Well, I forgot lmao.
But! I accidentally found the audiobook on libby (neither library I used to have cards for had the book at all) a few days ago and decided to give it a shot.
I highly recommend!
Matt Godfrey is an excellent narrator imo, especially for a story like this. I honestly might try to buy the audiobook so I can listen to a chapter each day in the future for a new Halloween-month tradition.
I just got caught up so the next chapter I'll listen to is today's, and I think I'll listen to one chapter each day for the remainder of the month 🎃

It's almost October, which means it's almost time to start my annual re-reading of one of my all-time favorite books, A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER by Roger Zelazny. With 31 chapters, one for each day of the month, it is a fantastic mash-up of creepy seasonal goodness wrapped into a compelling story, a kind of literary advent calendar for Halloween.

It’s not the best adaption (though in fairness it was deliberately drawing on tv and pop culture) but the version of Holmes who shows up in A Night in the Lonesome October is so funny for having to, with great reluctance, accept that there’s a magical intelligent dog running around and has to hatch a plan with it
He’s also considered as big a threat as the supernaturals are, which is pretty cool
