Books I read in January
The Guest List — Lucy Foley
Read: 29/12/23 – 02/01/24
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
This was the first book of this genre I have read, I went into it basically blind only really knowing the what the description on the storygraph gave me but I had heard great things about this author due to having previously had The Paris Apartment recommended to me (which is still on my tbr). I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I was invested in the story the whole way through, I found the writing style and multiple points of view interesting, and thought the descriptiveness, especially of the setting of the book, was very well written. My only thing is that the last few chapters and overall ending of the book felt a little rushed and hastily wrapped up.

Love At First Site — Phoebe MacLeod
Read: 02/01 – 05/01
Rating: ☆☆☆
This book was a fun, lighthearted read. The romance of the book felt a little rushed and really only took up a small fraction of the story, whilst the main focus of the story being the main character finding her way post-breakup and having just lost a job that she loved, and the growth she makes as a result. The cast of characters was very likeable. Overall, the book was enjoyable for what it was.
The Reading List — Sara Nisha Adams

I went into this book completely blind having never heard of either the book itself nor the author as it was in my Kindle recommendations and sounded interesting. This was a very lovely and inspiring book about the power of reading and its ability to be both an escape from the struggles of life and also a way of connecting people. This book covers some tough topics, but it's done in a very careful and compassionate way that reinforces the idea that you never have to go through things alone. With adiverse cast of very lovable characters, I would highly recommend this book.

The Folk of the Air Trilogy — Holly Black

The Cruel Prince: ☆☆☆☆¾
The Wicked King: ☆☆☆☆½
The Queen Of Nothing: ☆☆☆☆¾
This genre is a comfort genre to me; it's the genre of books that got me into reading originally, though I have never read anything by this particular author before. I very much enjoyed the story of this trilogy, the twists and turns, and a lot of the characters and the way they were developed. I found myself disappointed when I finished the last book wanting more from this world in which the characters lived. I need to try to get back into more fantasy books because I thoroughly enjoyed this series.

Never Ever Getting Back Together — Phoebe MacLeod
Read: 27/01 – 28/01
Rating: ☆☆☆½
Again, this was another fun, lighthearted book. The romance was a lot more of the main focus of this book than the last Phoebe MacLeod book I read, and I must say I did enjoy this one a little more. A true rom-com story!
The Cheat Sheet — Sarah Adams
Rating: ☆☆¾
I have read almost all of Sarah Adams books and always really enjoy the lighthearted, cute stories, which this book was no different. This is, however, the first book I've ever listened to as an audiobook, I really enjoyed the dual point of views (and the different voice actors for the audiobook version) and that you could get an insight to what both of the main characters were thinking. There wasn't a lot of depth to this book, and it was very character driven rather than plot driven, but it was a fun little listen for me and kept me entertained throughout.

July 2023 Wrap Up
July was a great month. We had a wonderful weeklong vacation in Gloucester, MA with my in-laws, celebrated the two year anniversary of adopting our cats, and got to spend plenty of time with friends. I certainly can't complain about my summer so far!
Books Read: 15
Look at me go! My favorite new read was The Travelling Cat Chronicles, which is now my favorite book of the year. I also learned upon rereading Mansfield Park that I actually really like it. And of course I had a great time rereading my ultimate comfort books: the All for the Game series. My least favorite was Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law, which I found completely disappointing. I like Rich's prose works a lot, but her poetry doesn't agree with me. Books marked with ® are rereads.

Still working through The Guest List and it's reminding me how much I enjoyed middle grade horror as a kid. This IS a horror novel
(I recommend especially if you like "boys will be boys" treated as the horror trope it should be. The amount of times I've wished I could reach through the pages and strangle Duncan, though I suspect (vague spoilers) that Will is the one who got away with the Thing in school...)
Midpoint thoughts and theories under the cut:
• Johnno, being more intelligent than he thinks he is, provided the Hint. I think Aoife's husband is the friend of the schoolkid the Hellraisers killed. I think there are multiple gambits piling up here, but I think Aoife and her husband did some work for something to happen to the Hellraisers (possibly specifically Will) while on the island
• Will is filming himself and Jules and giving the recordings to either his school friends or his producer, just like he did when he was in school
• Johnno's whiskey IS re-bottled Laphroaig
• Johnno will have a realization (possibly too late) that he's like the boy who was killed, a hanger-on dogsbody for the others.
• The Sisters will bond over stabbing men who wronged them
• Hannah lives. Charlie dies.
