I gotta know your Kon headcanons. I Must. But also, how about some Jon headcanons?
YESSSS THE BROS <3 kon first!!
Headcanon A:  realistic
inspired by talking with @lemontongues: he practices with his ttk by getting really into fibercrafts, particularly making bobbin lace!! after a while he can control so many moving parts all at once doing so many things and it's pretty incredible to watch.
this also does result in him having so much lace and not knowing what to do with it all. he sells some at markets with ma, learns to sew once ma says they really have enough doilies, bookmarks, etc., so he can make her pretty dresses, and starts adding lace to his own wardrobe too. call that grannypunk.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
he loves max mercury's chives, and as a farm boy, is delighted to discuss gardening whenever he visits bart's family. bart is like NO NO PLEASE TAKE MORE CHIVES. MORE THAN THAT. EVEN MORE!
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
he's terrified of himself and the amount of power he has. especially as he grows older and comes into his own properly. the idea that, as a fully-realized kryptonian with ttk, he might genuinely be able to take down clark - superman - is genuinely terrifying to him.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
clark actually does offer to share the superman mantle with him when he's a little older! (they're flying side-by-side; kon is so shocked he falls 500 feet before he remembers how to fly again.) he ruminates on it a bit and finally says no, because he'd like to forge his own identity, but the fact that clark offered means the world to him.
AND NOW BABY TIME:
Headcanon A:  realistic
he takes after his mom a lot more than people realize. he's got her scheming mind. got all that cunning and guile under his dad's big baby blues and general goodboy demeanor. but when it rears its head, oh man. you can really tell yeah, that's lois lane's son alright. sometimes kon likes to wind him up and set him loose on people just to stand there and giggle while jon verbally eviscerates some hapless asshole.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
teenage jon came home from school one day and immediately put a dollar in the swear jar. when lois raised an eyebrow, he blinked innocently at her and explained, "lex luthor gave a speech at school today, and when he asked if anyone had questions, i raised my hand and called him a bitch."
lois thought this was so funny she gave him his dollar back. kon, when he heard, thought this was so funny he gave jon an additional 20 bucks.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
he accidentally broke pa's favorite mug one morning while pouring coffee for ma. yes, he did cry about it.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
he actually gets to have a childhood! sometimes he comes home and calls kon up to complain about a bunch of middle school drama and kon just sits there like. ???. ?????. and then jon is like. oh right you're like eight :/ never mind. kon is always like "HEY!" and jon thinks it's funny, so he never stops saying it.

Can we please get your Kryptonian oc lore ówò?
sure! :D
he mostly exists just to see if i could swing a kryptonian oc to begin with lmao. his name is kars-ur (sounded out like the middle of ‘incarceration’), his parents are jax-ur and mala, he grew up as a prince of their regime on new krypton (see superman: tas, where they escape the phantom zone and use their powers to take over a planet). when clark discovers the situation, he gains kars-ur’s aid, and kars’ ultimately leaves with him to allow the new kryptonians to recover & rebuild on their own terms.
(i don’t have any nicer/more recent art of him but here’s some outfit concepts? left to right: new krypton imperial wardrobe, new krypton minus cape, and earth superhero costume)
Tumblr media
kars-ur himself is pretty sedate, and harbors a lot of guilt about the whole thing/doubts about his own judgement. he does have a fun dichotomy of a goof-up streak, impeccable manners & a fierce commitment to the bit, which is how he ends up working for lexcorp. he got the job completely by accident (lois & clark hadn’t briefed him on the whole “lex luthor is evil” thing yet.) he fully intends on turning in his two-week notice, but it turns out he’s good enough at the job to gain lex luthor’s notice.
he spends the first few months of his job internally screaming, but like here’s the thing, i think lex luthor is overwhelmingly more entertaining if he can’t clock superheroes. any of them. at all. even when he sees them everyday and they have naturally white hair. and eventually kars-ur catches onto this, and is like, “you know what. i’m nothing if not familiar with the language of oppression & capitalism. i can fuck with this guy.”
so he’s basically clark & lois’s inside source to everything lexcorp, and lex luthor’s favorite (derogatory) social media manager lmao.
other fun facts abt him: after kars-ur arrived on earth he developed a hyperfixation on political/economic theory and conner is quickly edging him into punk territory; he’s frenemies with my reach oc who’s in a similar predicament; kars-ur & lois get along well in a bantery kind of way; clark offered him the house of el seal but kars modified it out of fear that he’d be too presumptuous if he accepted; he’s very nervous around kids & will probably be a mess around jon in the future; he has an emotional support cat but has held out on naming it because he insists it’s temporary.

I was thinking about it and if I was in like the DC universe and like involved with superheroes somehow I just know I genuinely fear for the person I would become because there are so many out of this world (sometimes literally) beautiful women like I just know I would turn into the biggest pick me.
Like you'd catch me shoving batman out of the way just to talk to Catwoman, like holy fuck that woman is a fineeee type of fineee, like we got loads in common I love pussy too yk-
Straight up even if I was like the best of heroes I'd probably be kicked out of the Justice League the way I'd be trying to instigate fights between Diana and Bruce to hinder and chance of something developing like "You're just such a natural born leader you know it should really be you and if I were you I'd spend my time more around people who appreciate that about you- you don't need Batman all he is is a rich guy with a lot of angst and a goth wardrobe. You can find all those qualities at an expensive mime show"
Don't get me started on Blackfire like the way I'd be an absolute simp like if I was with the teen titans or whatever when she was coming down to Earth acting like a menace I'd be like "no you guys I'll fight her, you just don't understand her like I do you know"
Barbara Gordon- straight up ignoring the presence of Nightwing because excuse me that is the Barbara Gordon. He acc doesn't deserve her or Kori anyway I could treat them both so much better. "Are you okay babe you look a little sad? I don't want to get between you or Dick or anything but it just seems like he doesn't pick up on these things. Just know you can always come to me I'll always be there for you"
I would probably be responsible for Superman murdering someone the way I'd be chatting up Lois Lane like "he just goes off and disappears all the time I mean if that were me with you I'd respect your time you know I'm just saying"
Like I would be the most universally disliked character the way I'd be such a pick me lol

From what I've gathered, S&L is 5m/ep, TW is 4.7m/ep, Walker is 3.5 m/ep.
I don't know if these numbers are accurate at all, but IF they are - how TF does a FIRST season show with practically all green actors with little to no name recognition cost soooo much? We know it wasn't the vfx/sfx because those were TERRIBLE (Jensen did say at JIB that they cut money from other areas to pay for the expensive finale music and I'm guessing a bunch of that was the fx budget but still). So where did all the money go? We established it wasn't fx, it clearly was NOT wardrobe either, we know they spent a LOT on music but I don't know about enough to hike the budget per ep that much.. so was this all the stunt casting? Did they really blow the budget casting a bunch of spn alum that half the audience didn't even care about? We know new watchers wouldn't know any og spn cast so it was all for the handful of AA's and hellers who, lets be honest, only watched for Dean or dest*el so the stunt casting wasn't even all that necessary for them either.
Plus shows only get more expensive the longer they run. S&L is on s3 and they have some pretty impressive vfx for a cw show so I'm sure that's where a chunk of their budget goes. Not to mention there are quite a few decently well known names on the show which always ups the budget. And Walker is also on s3 and are much cheaper. I get that Walker doesn't need as much vfx as a DC show would but they have still managed to keep their budget low even though they are 3 seasons in. Where is TW going to go? The money they spent per ep was a waste and it will only get worse. They claim they want to bring in MORE stunt casting if they get a s2 which will ramp up the budget. I'm sure Jensen will want more expensive music and D will probably try to do something stupid with wardrobe. I would HOPE they would put more money to fx in the future but we know they won't bother with silly things like that when they can spend money on their friends and background music!!
So, pure speculation, since the proof provided is 'from what I've gathered,' (though I have seen others mention TW is fairly expensive to produce).
But, if this is the case, then I do have to wonder where that money's going, because it certainly wasn't being spent on the show. I know Jensen said he gave up his salary for the last episode so they could get Led Zeppelin, and they probably saved money in other areas for that, but I also have to wonder what his and Danneel's EP salaries were for the other episodes. Not to mention, they had to hire a few more EPs when the Ackles proved themselves incompetent at the job.
If those numbers are accurate, there's no way they're getting a second season, especially not on the CW. The WB already said they would support Superman & Lois. Funny they didn't mention supporting TW.

hi!! first of all i love your fics, you write Gar so well! Second, i'd love to hear about Jon with the titans, such an interesting take, i don't watch superman and lois but that boy deserves something better., but if you prefer keeping those for yourself now, what about Gar and the Kents? i love that one!
take care!
Sorry about the wait!!
I wrote some of my ideas for the Solarshot au here which explains why Jon ran away from Smallville and how he met the Titans. You gave give that a read if you want ❤
Here's some of my thoughts of how I think Jon's relationships with the core four are!
Dick > Their relationship was very much mentor and apprentice since Jon needed a lot of training. They would spend hours in the training room practicing combat until Dick would have to cut it short because Jon was exhausted yet insisted he was okay to keep going, and Dick would have to remind him that pushing yourself till you collapse isn't healthy and taking breaks are necessary, not a weakness. Some day during their training Dick realizes Jon isn't great with bo-staffs and more Batman-like weapons, so he gives Jon some test lazer guns to try and it instantly clicked for Jon since he's used the d.o.d's guns in the past.
Even after Jonathan graduates superhero training and becomes Solarshot, he'll always see Dick as his mentor and remember how he was the one to always remind him that you don't need powers to be a superhero.
Kory > Unlike Dick, who's more focused on training and weapons, Kory helps Jon process and understand his emotions, how he feels about his family and being a kryptonian without anything kryptonian about him. Eventually Jon tells Kory he decided he wants nothing to do with Krypton since it's nothing but a source of unhappiness for him, he just wants to be Jon and she assures him that distancing himself from something that makes him upset even if it's his heritage is okay. His happiness is more important than learning about a destroyed planet. She also made sure Jonathan knew that they asked him to join the Titans because they liked his heart and saw his potential as a hero, not because he's kryptonian. That means nothing to them.
Besides helping Jon with his emotions, he and Kory also bonded over having the same sense of humor and being the only two Titans who put some effort into their appearances while their boyfriends wear the same three shirts on rotate for a week. Whenever Kory goes shopping or just needs to get out of the tower, Jon (and Gar) comes along.
Rachel > While not the closest members since they don't have much in common, they don't have an issue getting along, though Rachel sometimes likes to tease that Jon took her place as Dick's favorite student. Jon sees Rachel a lot like Jordan, the all black wardrobe and interests like art and collecting books, even their attitudes are similar, so he tries his best to not accidentally treat her like Jordan since he's so used to being around his brother. It gets a lot easier after a few months, but he always feels a pang of sadness each time she reminds him of Jordan, making him wonder how his brother and family are doing without him but can never build enough courage to get in contact with them, mainly fearing they'll be upset that he ran away and try to drag him back to Smallville or worse, learn that they're happier now that he's out of their lives.
In the future, Rachel takes her role as aunt Raven very seriously and adores her nephew and nieces. She never has kids of her own because having them just isn't for her but she's more than happy to babysit and spoil the hell out of her brother's kids. She even teaches one of nieces some magic because she's interested in it despite having powers of her own.
Gar > Finally, the Titan member we've all been waiting for, right? Now I could write an 500 page essay about Jon and Gar's relationship so I'm gonna make this as quick and short as possible lol
Out of all the Titans, it's Gar that Jon became close with first. Gar blamed himself for Jon ending up in the tower's infirmary and promised to stick by his side until he recovered. So, everyday Gar would pop into the infirmary to give Jon company, sometimes bringing a boardgame with him because there's only so much to talk about. During their talks however is how they find out how similar they are and can't deny there was definitely a certain spark felt between them when they realized: "you're like me."
When Jon was healed enough to leave Titans Tower and was asked by the leaders if they wanted to join them, the main reason for his agreement was that he actually wanted to be apart of their team but there was also a part that wanted to stick around because he very much likes Gar and wants to stay friends with him.
And that's what happens the moment he accepts Dick and Kory's offer, Gar zooms over to him and excitedly starts telling Jon about all the fun stuff they can do, like stay up late watching movies or playing video games. Gar even helps Jon set up and decorate his new room. And the rest of the Titans realize quite quickly that Jon and Gar are attached at the hip, wherever one goes the other follows.
Kory knows exactly where this friendship is going and so does Dick, but he's isn't super thrilled about it lol
Thank you for the ask!! 💚💚💚

Superman: The Animated Series (1996) S01E06: Feeding Time
Damn. Every time they do Parasite origin story I feel soo bad for the poor sucker.
Also some real body horror here
Clark, I know this is not green, but there's no reason to poke dangerous substances with your fingers. You touch humans with those fingers.
See, Clark? Even the nice Detective agrees with me
...Clark, you're such a naive bean
This is so colorful and yet they sure do Batman-up now and then
...dude, my dude, why are you stealing jewelry? How are you going to fence it off? Tho you just might like the bling. That's ok.
Jimmy to the rescue!
Should Superman in chains get counted as innuendo?
I like how they recolor Lois clothes to give an illusion she has an actual wardrobe.

any thoughts on Superman’s different looks and costumes throughout time? the trunks, the no trunks; do you have an ideal “look?” Or should he be like Batman/Spider-Man and have a fluid wardrobe?
I'm not a trunks purist. The Reborn suit's red & yellow belt did a good enough job breaking up the blue for me, and there have been enough suits without the trunks that I've enjoyed to convince me they're not a requirement for his suit to work. Siegel and Shuster didn't envision Superman as a "retro" character, they envisioned him as a sci-fi character, and Superman's design should evolve with the sci-fi aesthetic of the times. But DC shouldn't be "ashamed" putting Superman in his iconic outfit either because that outfit worked just fine in the Reeve movies.
Ideally yes, I think Superman should have a fluid wardrobe just like Batman and Spider-Man do, where they change their suits up for a while before reverting to their iconic looks, it's a shame his excellent Reborn and Authority suits didn't get to stick around for a while because both ruled. I think he should start with the t-shirt and jeans, showing his working class roots, then "graduate" to the classic outfit once he can fly, and change suits every so often when a major life event happens such as marrying Lois or Jon being born.
My top 10 favorite Superman suits are:
Reborn
Tumblr media
2. Authority
Tumblr media
3. Classic
Tumblr media
4. Gladiator/Freedom Fighter
Tumblr media
5. Electric Blue
Tumblr media
6. Red Son
Tumblr media
7. Recovery Suit
Tumblr media
8. Smallville S11
Tumblr media
9. Superman-Prime
Tumblr media
10. Solar Suit
Tumblr media
Note that I consider the suits such as the Fleschier and Kingdom Come suits to be the classic model with a variation of the s-shield - because that is essentially what they are - so the classic suit at #3 includes them as well.

It is time. It is finally time for the new Suicide Squad rant (and spoilers will be plentiful):
As someone who was into DC Comics and comics in the mid to late 2010s and had so much hype for the first Suicide Squad movie only to be let down, I was so nervous for this one. I knew it was going to be a roller coaster, but whether I would come out happy or disappointed was up in the air. Having just seen it I will say this: I have no idea if this was a good movie-movie. It was insane. The comedy. The violence. The high emotion. I’m still trying to take it all in. But one thing I do know is that this is an amazing Suicide Squad movie. Gunn and co took the best parts of the comic concept and went batshit with it and that is how this property should be handled (in my opinion). Screw edgelordisms, we need full on insanity free of aiming for shock-value or sexy brutality we want chaos baby.
Starting the whole movie as they did, with Savant as the POV for a mission (or part of the mission) that just goes to hell immediately and kills off so many before the title arrives is the perfect way to start this movie. Like the second I realized this was how they were doing it I was just smiling from ear to ear, this is the spirit of the property.
Part of me wishes we got more Amanda Waller, but what we had was impeccable. Then again, this is Viola Davis we’re talking about, and if she was born to play any character in a superhero story, it is Amanda Waller.
And points to her tech team, introducing them with the death bets was just a lovely way to show how regular this is and how awful everyone is in this movie.
I’m not going to pretend like Deadshot and Bloodsport didn’t have the exact same character- and plot premises… but I will say that Bloodsport felt better executed.
I love that they kept some of the past members and not just Harley. Rick Flag got to have a full personality and interactions with his team members and to be a true leader and it made me so happy for someone who initially did not give a single shit about his character. The Harley friendship? The Dubois friendship? The friendship with that guerilla leader? Amazing. The one American soldier in fictional media I genuinely like. You go Mr Flag.
The new members were… they were insane in the best way. Gone are the shitty stereotypes and present are some of the wackiest creations to ever grace the mainstream movie-sphere (aka the slightly less normal comic creations): A man who has to shoot out polka dots two times a day so as not to die from a space virus. A giant child murdering weasel. A guy who detaches his limbs and slaps people with said detached limbs. King Shark. The second person to command rats with a fancy gadget. They are all crazy and all weird and all more or less morally repulsive people and I love them.
The amount of times I did a double take over the soundtrack I swear. Jessie Reyez? The Pixies? It was so much fun to pick up on once I did.
Was the depiction of a vague Latin American country stereotypical? Yes. Was the secret American involvement predictable and felt mildly patronizing from a non-American, part Latina point of view? Yep. But damn it if I didn’t have a good time with those stereotypes and laugh my ass off at how well executed some were. I don’t know if it was meant as parody, but that one secretary has me thinking so — and if so I am pleased.
Speaking of Latino dictators Harley’s one day romance with one of the villains was something I never knew I needed. Like it was so perfect for Harley that when it happened I almost hit myself for not realizing that this kind of plot should be a normal thing for Harley. And the end of it? Perfect not only in this standalone movie, but also in conjunction with the first and with BoP.
The Taika Waititi cameo??? Oh my god??? I did not expect that and I love it?? Sir, What We Do in the Shadows is impeccable.
Rick Flag’s death actually surprised me. It shouldn’t as this is Suicide Squad, but I kind of expected him to be on Harley’s level of unkillable (because let’s face it, no one kills Harley). What I will say is that his death was good and his final words and actions made me love him all the more. I hope this spawns more Rick Flag content, or at least inspires me to look at what already exists, if he already is as this movie made him (it’s been ages since I read one of the Suicide Squad reboot comics okay).
Starro. How can a villain be so wacky and so terrifying at the same time? I did not expect a literal alien starfish to have more terrifying powers and a more tragic plot execution than Enchantress. But here we are. And that damn star just wanted to be floating in space, and instead it was stuck getting revenge by killing and puppeteering human corpses. Wow that thing was creepier the more you think about it.
I don’t know what I think about Polka Dot Man. I loved watching him on screen but also damn those mommy-issues were on a new level. Not just in his backstory but how he literally sees her in every person around him that was insane. Very funny but like also the kind that makes you laugh just because you’re uncomfortable and don’t know how else to releive the tension.
When Waller got knocked out by a staff member I immediately thought «oh my god Amanda Waller is going to kill half the staff for this», so I’m mildly surprised and disappointed that I didn’t get to see that happen. But also I should maybe expect something like this in a potential future Suicide Squad movie. We can’t have everything in a movie as packed as this.
Peacemaker was very horrible and worked really well. Don’t really have much to say about him, not because I didn’t enjoy him but because I already feel like the film itself has said it for me. But the planting and payoff for his death? Chef’s. Kiss.
Harley’s wardrobe was beautiful. Ratcatcher 2’s combat outfit felt like a steampunk plague dream. Bloodsport’s mask was supercool. Rick Flag’s t-shirt was amazing. But the best little outfit was the Mafalda-keychain and her red dress, hands down. Oh and King Shark’s fake moustache finger moment.
King Shark is shaped like a friend I don’t care how many people he ate alive on screen he looks so huggable. It feels like wanting to pet a bear. You know it will kill you but damn it look at those paws and those cute eyes!
I really need to give it to not just James Gunn but the entire production team for this movie. The aesthetic was perfect. The story was the right blend of whimsical and violent. The finished product was a literal rollercoaster and I mean that in a good way. If superhero movies have to be like amusement parks, I hope they’re more like this one and BoP.
I’ll finish on the note that while I think this movie was great and hopefully a step in the right direction for the DCU/DCEU (as in stop trying to play Marvel’s game and just do your own thing/ let your creative teams run wild and free), it is not the first step. Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey and the production team for it took a step first, and they deserve due credit and attention. If you loved this Suicide Squad movie and haven’t watched BoP yet, do so. Because they really are in the same ballpark while doing things in slightly different ways. And any good DCEU movie deserves more attention so the studios know that creativity and risks should be rewarded. I want more DC movies like this, not necessarily in genre but in creative risks. I want a Black Canary rock movie. I want Alfred in a reverse heist movie alone in the batcave against Gotham villains. I want Gotham Academy on screen play by play from the comics. I want a fully animated psychedelic-like Khalid Nassour as Dr. Fate movie. I want elevated horror movie Constantine. I want weird ass Lois Lane journalist movies with a heavy side of Superman. And I want DC movies I didn’t even know I wanted.
Support creativity in mainstream comic movies. Help me become a DC fan and happy about it again.

Second Glance
Or, It seems I’ve written a Superman fanfic
Lois lived for the hustle and bustle of journalism, but she liked the Planet offices best in the early morning, when there was no one around except the janitors. She liked the dim light, the peaceful hush, the chance to gather her thoughts and stake out her territory. Some of the cub reporters said that Lane lived at the office, and Lois encouraged the notion. Other reporters had been here longer, and Perry White ran the place with an iron fist, but let no one doubt that the Daily Planet offices were Lois Lane's natural habitat.
She was only two steps inside before she realized that she wasn't alone. In the middle of the room, lit by the blue glow of a computer screen, Clark Kent was dozing at his desk, forehead against his monitor while his glasses sat beside his keyboard. No telling whether his day was beginning or ending, but it looked like he'd spent the night here. The rumpled shirt and striped tie were the same ones he'd worn yesterday--and she would deck anyone who suggested there was anything significant about her noticing such things. She was a reporter. Noticing details was part of her job.
Lois picked up the glasses and dangled them from her fingers. "Sleeping on the job again, Smallville?"
Kent bolted awake, hands clattering against the keyboard. "Just resting my eyes.”
"You are allowed to go home, you know," she said, a little peeved that he'd intruded upon her morning routine.
"Not when I'm up against deadline," Kent said. "White wants this copy by nine a.m., and judging by his language, I'll have every specter in the Roman Empire after me if I'm late."
He seemed agitated, the lamb, and Lois was moved to give out a rare bit of advice. "Know what your problem is, Kent? You need a backbone. Perry has more respect for people who stand up for themselves.”
Kent shrugged. “I’m not good with conflict.”
It was said that Lois’ sarcasm could dry up rivers. “You don’t say.” How had this paper not eaten him alive? The man didn’t even have the courage to watch a Superman brawl on television. “Only way to get better at anything is to practice.”
“Thanks, but I’d prefer to practice on easier targets.”
“Don’t say I didn’t try to help.” She flipped the glasses around and examined Kent. He looked different without the glasses. Broader. More confident. Nothing like the inexperienced reporter who couldn’t see three feet in front of him without a pair of spectacles.
She peeked at him through the lenses and the truth hit her like a lightning bolt. Her hand flew to her mouth, and she gasped, “Oh. Oh my gosh. You’re...”
Kent sat bolt upright, panic in his eyes. His fingers gripped her hand that held the glasses. “Lois, I can explain...”
Her grin stretched wide. “You’re a hipster!” She yanked her hand out of Kent’s now-limp grasp and looked through the lenses of his glasses, which magnified absolutely nothing. “You don’t need these! You may as well be wearing plastic wrap!”
Kent had gone red as an International tractor. (You couldn’t hang around this hick for long without picking up farm metaphors). He snatched the glasses from her hand with a speed that surprised her. “I’d prefer you didn’t announce it to the entire city.”
Lois grinned, “Oh, this is front page news. It seems that the entire time I’ve known you, you’ve been wearing these Coke-bottles as a demented fashion statement.”
Oh, he was cute when he was flustered. “That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it? Then enlighten me, Smallville.” She held an imaginary pen and notepad. “For the record, what has motivated you to spend long years wearing these useless hunks of plastic on your face?”
“I really did need glasses once,” he said, fumbling them onto his face. “As a kid. Then my vision improved and I stopped wearing them.”
“So you brought them back for, what, nostalgia?”
He shrugged a shoulder. “I moved to Metropolis, started applying for newspaper jobs, and found out I didn’t fit any hiring manager’s image of an investigative reporter. Even in a suit and tie, I looked like, well, Smallville.”
“The farmboy rube.”
He quirked a self-deprecating smile. “Better suited to throwing hay bales than chasing a lead. I thought the glasses could help me look the part. I got hired at the Planet a week later.”
“You could have given them up. Let everyone assume you got contacts.”
“I didn’t dare at first. Needed to prove I belonged here. And then, well, they became part of the identity. Helped me feel like Clark Kent, investigative reporter.”
“Part of the costume,” Lois said. She curated her wardrobe too carefully not to understand the power of a good image.
“I guess,” he said, with a smile she didn’t quite understand.
“Well, that’s only slightly psychotic,” Lois said. “But I’ve got a good psychiatrist on standby if you ever need an outlet.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. But Lois...” His hand was over hers again. Behind his glasses, those blue eyes were disgustingly earnest. “Please don’t tell anyone about this.”
How did a man who had nearly a foot on her seem so helpless? Refusal would feel like kicking a puppy. She pulled her hand back. “Your secret’s safe with me, Smallville. I’d hate to destroy your carefully crafted image.”
He sighed in relief. “Thank you.”
“And it’s always good to have blackmail material in my back pocket if I ever need a favor.”
He rolled his eyes and smiled as he turned back to his computer. “You’re a heartless monster, Lane.”
“I do try. You should have known it’s impossible to keep secrets from me.”
The smile grew. “Oh, I don’t know. I think I’ve done pretty well so far.”
“Are you telling me Clark Kent has even more dark secrets?”
“You’d be surprised. I’m a man of many mysteries.”
The farm boy in the big city. The man who cringed before his editor and was absolutely fearless in chasing a story. The man who missed every second meeting but was willing to work all night to make a deadline. Every time she looked, it seemed that he was hiding a new layer behind those glasses. Including, it seemed, the secret of those glasses.
“That you are, Kent,” she said, as she strode toward her own desk. She found that she was looking forward to solving them.
