Kingdom Hearts: A bizarre Disney experiment that took off.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the House of Milesverse, and today we will be discussing a truly bizarre series. I promise that I'll try to keep it Simple & Clean when it comes to discussing it. Today's topic is Kingdom Hearts, the iconic Disney-Final Fantasy crossover that you've probably heard of.
This is in late honor of the franchise, in fact. March 28th celebrates the 22nd Anniversary of the first Kingdom Hearts game. That is 22 years since Kingdom Hearts' inception.
What IS Kingdom Hearts?
The Process:
Tumblr media
Years ago, the early seeds of Kingdom Hearts were laid in a game idea. Square Enix (Square at the time) wanted to make a 3D game similar to Mario 64. However, they could not figure out an idea on who would represent the series. They believed that only characters from Disney could potentially rival Mario in popularity.
That led to a chance encounter between former game producer Shinji Hashimoto and a Disney Executive. Square as it turned out, operated in the same japanese office building as Disney did. From there, Hashimoto pitched the idea to Disney directly, and it was smooth sailings from then on.
Development soon began in 2000 with character designer Tetsuya Nomura providing the 'look' of many characters in the game. Initially, Disney wanted Donald Duck to be the main protagonist for the game. Square on the other hand argued for Mickey Mouse to be playable.
Instead, a compromise was made, and an original character was created. Sora is the main protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series and wielder of the keyblade. He's recognizable to many people who aren't as familiar with the games.
A fun fact about Kingdom Hearts is its use of Final Fantasy characters. These characters were quite a shocker expected back then. In fact, their appearance was deliberately kept a secret to entice fans.
Success & More:
Tumblr media
The first game, Kingdom Hearts 1, was released in 2002. It was a commercial success, and it quickly paved the way for a sequel. As of 2022, the game has sold well over 36 million copies worldwide.
Tetsuya Nomura himself was unsure if there would be room for a sequel. He still snuck in a secret trailer scene in the game for fans. Soon enough, plans for a sequel were made after Kingdom Hearts 1, and other games quickly followed. Chain of Memories, for example, was released in 2003, and directly follows the story from the first game.
Since then, Kingdom Hearts is up to its 13th installment. It has spawned a massive following worldwide. The series just perfectly captures the Disney magic that many people had in their childhood. More than that, it also offers something fun for the Final Fantasy fans.
In 2021, Sora would finally join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as its last DLC fighter. In addition, it was revealed that Sora is the most highly requested fighter to ever appear in the Smash Bros series. It's quite a testament to his character, and how popular he is.
In 2022, Kingdom Hearts IV was announced for the next generation of consoles. It is a sequel to Kingdom Hearts 3, which acted as an ending to numerous old storylines. Kingdom Hearts IV sets the stage for a new story, pitting Sora and his friends against the 'Lost Masters'.
Voice Actors who have worked on Kingdom Hearts:
Tumblr media
Kingdom Hearts has boasted many actors over its installments. You would be surprised to see who's been in the series.
The main character Sora is voiced by Haley Joel Osment. Osment played in the Sixth Sense as Cole Sear, a psychic child. You'd know him from the iconic film line, "I see dead people".
The main antagonist Xehanort is voiced by at least three actors.
Leonard Nimoy (Spock from Star Trek)
Rutger Hauer (Roy Batty from Blade Runner)
Christopher Lloyd (Doctor Brown from Back To The Future)
Opposite of Xehanort is Eraqus, who is played by Mark Hamill. He's Luke Skywalker and the iconic voice of The Joker in numerous Batman media. Nimoy and Hamill in a way also represents the Star Trek Vs. Star Wars debate that's pervaded fandoms for so long.
The character Roxas is Sora's 'nobody', essentially his other half. He and Ventus, the character he's modeled after, share the same voice. They are both voiced by Jesse McCartney, a famed popstar in the 2000s. Jesse McCartney would also do the voice for Robin in Young Justice, and later, as Nightwing.
Ansem the Wise, later known as DiZ, is another supporting character in the franchise. Christopher Lee is well-known as Dracula, Saruman, and Count Dooku. After his unfortunate passing, Lee was replaced by Corey Burton.
Hayden Panettiere was the initial voice for Sora's close friend, Kairi. She played Kirby Reed in both Scream 4 and Scream 6. She also played Juliette Barnes in Nashville, and Claire Bennet in Heroes.
Hayden would later be replaced by Alyson Stoner in future installments. Alyson Stoner played Caitlyn in Camp Rock and it's sequel. She was also Isabella Garcia in the popular Disney series, Phineas and Ferb.
The main antagonist of the first game was Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless. Ansem was at first voiced by Billy Zane for the first game. Billy Zane was also the main antagonist of Titanic, aka Caledon Hockley.
In later games, Zane would be replaced by Richard Epcar. Richard Epcar is notable as the voice of Raiden from Mortal Kombat, and Daisuke Jigen from Lupin the 3rd. He's also the voice of Joseph Joestar's older self in later seasons.
All of this is further compounded by the Disney worlds. Kingdom Hearts gets numerous old actors back to reprise their roles. For example, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy all retain their current voice actors.
Overall, Kingdom Hearts has a well-crafted cast of voice actors. Numerous notable names have come to play characters in the series. I think that on its own is another impressive fact to add to the series.
The Story (And why it's not as confusing as you think):
What makes it so confusing?
Tumblr media
Kingdom Hearts is renowned across online fandom platforms for its plotline. Almost anything about it is guaranteed to create confusion in fans. It's hard enough having to keep up with how many people are just different iterations of other characters. Fans have coined the phrase "Everyone is Sora/Xehanort." for a reason.
In reality, the story itself is not 'confusing' at first glance. It all relies on making sure you play the games in order. Kingdom Hearts' greatest flaw is when people overthink it to the extreme.
There are a lot of people who would prefer to skip to the most recent game. However, that creates its own net of issues. When you don't play the games in order, you end up confused by certain plot elements.
To fully comprehend the bigger picture, you need to accept a few things about the series as well. For example, keyblades are inherently magical weapons. They possess a degree of sentience and can open or lock any door. Only someone strong of heart can wield a keyblade.
Overall, Kingdom Hearts is not a confusing series to get into. It's just a lot to look at. This leads to the games overwhelming people who try to take in every single detail.
Why it works:
Tumblr media
The love for Kingdom Hearts is phenomenal. After its release, it quickly gained praise as a best-selling hit under Disney. Much of this praise is given to the story, and characters. Even more praise is added to its scene-stealing music.
Its blending of Disney and RPG tones is also enjoyed by the audience. This is something that you would not expect to work, but it does. Kingdom Hearts itself is a perfect balance of Square Enix's usual flavor, combined with the childhood Disney magic that you are familiar with.
Kingdom Hearts' accuracy toward Disney also works when looking at the films. Fan-Favorite locations in the game are pulled from Disney's various films. They are almost perfectly replicated in Kingdom Hearts' own animation. It is a testament and love letter to the franchise's cartoonish roots.
Kingdom Hearts is something that at first glance, you think would not work. It's effectively a bizarre fusion between two things that have nothing in common. However, the developers behind the scenes do their part in making sure that the game balances it. Everything has a purpose, and nothing feels out of place.
Conclusion:
Tumblr media
Kingdom Hearts is an interesting topic to bring up in terms of video games. It's attracted a lot of confusion and shock from newcomers. However, I believe that this zaniness does its part. It is meant to be shocking, and as a series, it does that well.
There's something fun about how the series presents itself. Kingdom Hearts does not take itself seriously. Yet, there's no harm coming from that effect. This only accentuates its deep connections to the Disney franchise.
I think Kingdom Hearts is a fun series that has a lot of heart. I wanted to play the games myself as a kid after seeing how cool they were. I finally had the chance to buy them last year. It was perfect being able to relish every moment in playing them. I would recommend you pick up the game yourself.
What's NEXT?
Remember when I said that I was doing a review of Transformers: Earthspark? I still am. I pushed it back in favor of other topics, but it is still happening.
We'll also talk about X-Men '97 and discuss some other things. Moon Girl season 2 will also be another topic sometime this year. I hope you really enjoyed this one, by the way. If you have any questions or suggestions, please send them my way.

My Favorite Kirk/Spock Fanvids on YouTube
Tumblr media
There are some fanvids that I rewatch a lot on YouTube, so I decided to make a list of Kirk/Spock fanvid recs for anyone interested!
Of course, this list is based on my personal preferences, so I should probably let you know that my favorite videos always have at least a little bit of Old Married Spirk. I just love them in TOS movies so much!
Anyway, I'll start with the least "famous" ones and end with the most popular, so I hope you'll find something you haven't seen before!
Bring me to life by thesadchicken. Based on The Search for Spock, you can imagine why. The song is probably an obvious choice but it's perfect. :) It's always good to see underrated scenes in K/S fanvids like Kirk fighting Klingons.
Landslide by RhaegalKS. The real OMS! Focused on The Undiscovered Country era mixed with flashbacks from the original series and the previous movies. Very nostalgic.
The Wrath of Khan (Slash Trailer) by EimeoMoon. Just amazing! The creator called it "slash trailer" because it's a fan trailer focused on Kirk and Spock's relationship, but seriously… where is the lie? :)
Kirk/Spock: A Love Story by EimeoMoon. If you want to be emotionally compromised, that's it, that's the right fanvid. No singing, just the music and the characters' voices telling Kirk/Spock story from the very start of TOS to Spock Prime (just a cameo, there aren't AOS characters). Also no Generations because what's Generations? :D Kirk and Spock had a happy life together and it makes me cry.
A Thousand Years by bellizaria. Another great fanvid for K/S fans who want to be emotionally compromised, this time with some AOS too. It shows Kirk/Spock relationship through the years and the universes (again, no Generations). The song gets stuck in my head every time I rewatch this video, so I end up thinking about Kirk/Spock a lot and I have feelings, okay? :(
HAPPY BONUS:
Rock N Roll by xxLornyTunesxx. This is not labeled as Kirk/Spock so I didn't put it on the K/S list, but I'm sure shippers can enjoy it anyway! It's a tribute to TOS movies, so obviously Kirk and Spock's relationship is there among the other things. I wanted to end on a happy note and this video is perfect for that. I don't know what it is that works for me, if it's the combo Avril Lavigne + Star Trek or something else, but this is my comfort fanvid. I rewatch it every time I want to cheer myself up, so I hope it'll work for you too!
Well, that's all. :) Thank you for reading my list! I'd love to know if there are fanvids here that you liked! Did you already know some of them? Did you find something good to watch? I'm curious! :D

Hello hello ~~
Through wen-kexing-apologist's recent post about The Birdcage (which seems to come from your syllabus for baby gays) I got to the original series of reblogs which resulted in said syllabus. I read most of it (not everything because Real Life has my time hostage), and as someone who has seen her fare share of queer media I have now a pretty long to watch list.
As you wrote about how you enjoyed the romance of queer media I have a question.
Recently I have come across a Netflix movie trailer called Love at First Sight. With such a basic trope as a name I checked it out hoping the title to be misleading and to see something surprising in the plot. The disappointment I felt when by the end of it I realized it was exactly what the title sold: the most basic boy meets girl and they have to look for each other throughout the whole movie.
One of the things I really appeciate about queer media (and mainly BL probably) is the possibility to explore different kinds of romances and emotions. Both positive and negative. From Not Me to Heartsopper to Double Mints. I feel that being "out of the norm" they explore such emotions and situations in a more interesting and relatable way (and add to that that I, as a woman, cannot stand women characters making a 360º personality change once they fall in love)
So here's my question: what unusal or out of the ordinary romances would you like to see more of in BLs/queer shows/etc?
I personally would like romances with disabled characters to be more explored (I'm really looking forward to Last Twilight) or polyamory. Also more GL.
I admit this might be a very biased ask, it comes 100% from my subjective view, and I have yet to watch most of the movies in your syllabus for Baby Gays.
Anyway, I hope you have a great day and that this long ask won't bother you ❤
Well look at this ask! Let me get into this!
The Syllabus is on a Google Doc
First, I sincerely appreciate you watching me and @shortpplfedup go back and forth about stuff. For yours and others' convenience, I did put the Queer Cinema Syllabus in a Google Doc for @wen-kexing-apologist
Some Recommendations
If you're looking for a film with a disabled protagonist and also a bit about women, I would recommend checking out Margarita With a Straw (2014), Sleep With Me (2022) (I watched on Gaga), or if you're willing to tolerate hets Isa Pa With Feelings (2019) (currently on Netflix) or Silent (2022) (Viki)
If you're interested in more polyamory, I genuinely think that Quaranthings Season 2 (2021) does some really fascinating stuff worth checking out. We had complicated feelings about Me, My Husband, and My Husband's Boyfriend (2023), but I liked it.
What do I want though?
I think this is a harder question for me to answer than I was expecting. I see myself as a guest when I'm watching a lot of content from Southeast Asia. I will voice my opinion on what I like and don't like, what I'm taking from these shows, and how they're affecting me. However, I don't really consider myself the target audience. I watch the shows as legally as possible and help generate engagement, but the "interfans" they care about are the English-speaking Asians in their region, not really me I feel like.
So when I think about what I want, I don't feel a yearning for any of the BL-producing Asian countries' film industries to make it for me.
I want to see the shit I like in the West get made. I want to see Black queer people presented complexly (Here is my regular plug for For The Boys). I'm a fat black gay nerd. The last time I saw a fat black gay nerd that I liked in an American production was Fire Island (2022).
I'm a 33-year Star Trek fan who still thinks we need more GAYS IN SPACE. I'd like to see more productions like Sort Of (2021- ) where complex queer friend and social groups navigate just existing in the world and finding love and meaning. I'd like to see less of reboots of classic shows like Queer as Folk be about a horrifying mass death event in the city I live in and the spaces I frequent (I refuse to link to it).
I want to see TJ Klune's, Ginn Hale's, or Lynn Flewelling's works adapted to series. I would like to see more wide release queer shit in the West not be overwhelmingly about fit, attractive, young white guys.
I want distribution for queer stories to not always have to go through four years of distribution hell because of the film festival circuit.
I want the West to try to make BL! I don't care if it feels cheap on the front end. I just wish more of us would be willing to throw support behind web shows. We did it for Awkward Black Girl! We can do it again!
This is turning into rambling, so I'll say that I don't necessarily have strong feelings about what I absolutely need to see. I like connecting with the specific humanity of stories, especially if they're about queer people. I didn't know I needed Moonlight (2016) until I saw it. I didn't know I needed Make the Yuletide Gay (2009) or Black Sails (2014-2017) until I watched them.
I just want more people with ideas to get a chance to turn them into something cool for us.
What about the rest of you? Please tag me if you have things you're hoping for.

I think I'm in the minority in loving Star Trek: Beyond as by far the best of the three AOS movies, but it clearly had the best characterization and most character growth, particularly in the spirit of TOS.
My favorite line from Beyond, though, was in the second trailer, and apparently got cut at some point, probably because someone thought it was a bit dark for a "hero" movie. Movie dialogue taken from Paramount+: Uhura: If he [Jim Kirk] made it off that ship, he will come for us. Krall: I am counting on it.
But that same scene in the second trailer?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is a hell of a statement, particularly from a senior officer of the flagship of an organization founded on peace-keeping and scientific exploration.
These aren't the well-intentioned but cocky children we saw in the first two movies.
These aren't carbon-copies of the Original Series characters.
These aren't perfect heroes.
And I love that, for entirely different reasons than I love TOS.

Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury
Original Release: N/A (Cancelled 1999)
Developer: Interplay
Publisher: Interplay
Original Platform: PC
Not played: No leaked prototypes.
Tumblr media
A point and click adventure game that boasted some very interesting graphics. It featured the whole cast from The Original Series (although due to declining health, Maurice LaMarche took over from DeForest Kelly part way through development). It was going to have six chapters, each focusing on a different member of the crew with an interconnected plot. It revolved around peace talks on Vulcan between them and Romulans, with the Romulan ambassador being murdered.
There are a few videos of cutscenes and a couple of trailers, but this YouTube video shows how the game would have played:

I can understand the misogyny allegations for what some romance arcs can do to female characters. But also i can think of a ton of well written m/f romance arcs, where the female character still gets to exist outside of it with her own story. And, particularly in fandom, I think there is a refusal to engage with romance elements in a serious way, to bend over backwards to ignore it even if it is an objectively important part of the narrative, to seriously insist that the man is gay actually. (thinking of tomshiv here) So idk, it's silly to imply that romance is inherently misogynistic when what we should really pay attention to is how the romance arc is executed and how viewers choose to respond to it
yeah, i think this can get into sticky territory wrt queer representation, but there is DEFINITELY a long history in fandom of people wanting to discard/dispose of a male character's female love interest in order to ship him with another male character, which, as many others have noted, is an extremely misogynistic tendency.
i do think a lot of this, ultimately, comes down to the familiar issue of needing more well-developed, complex characters who are not cishet white men. well-developed, complex characters usually have more interesting/nuanced relationships, and, in western media, it is usually cishet white male characters who are given the privilege of being well-developed and complex.
also, on a slightly different but imo related note, here is an interesting anecdote about the development of spock from star trek (and consequently the development of spock/kirk) that i'm not sure many people really know about:
The tendency to keep Spock as a background character continued for the first eight episodes of The Original Series, when the NBC executives called Roddenberry and producer Herbert Franklin Solow to their offices in Burbank. The executives complained that Spock was not appearing frequently in the show.[22] They had received requests from local stations asking for Spock-centric episodes, which they referred to as "Spockmania".[28] When told that it was NBC who requested he be a background character, they flatly denied it and said it was obvious how popular Spock had become. Roddenberry showed them the advertising brochure as evidence and only then did they apologise.[22] It was decided to switch the romantic lead in "This Side of Paradise" from Hikaru Sulu to Spock,[29] something that made Nimoy apprehensive. But he subsequently said he enjoyed being able to act out Spock's emotions, and praised writer D. C. Fontana for expanding Vulcan culture within the series.[30] The sudden increase in popularity of Spock caused William Shatner, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk, to be dismayed that he was not portraying the favourite character. Although he was being paid $5,000 an episode, plus a percentage of profits, and Nimoy was being paid $1,250 an episode, it was the latter who was receiving several sacks of fan mail a week.[31] The fan mail figures were leaked to the press, angering Shatner.[32] This animosity from Shatner increased when reporters from Time arrived at the studio and set up for a photoshoot around Nimoy's makeup chair. Shatner and James Doohan were also in the makeup room, and Doohan later recalled that once Shatner realised he was being ignored, he jumped from his chair, shouted that he was the captain of the show and from then on he would have his makeup applied in his trailer.[31] The popularity of Spock had built to the extent that gossip columnists in Hollywood spread rumours among agents that Shatner was going to be dropped from the series and replaced with Nimoy as the lead.[33]
[...]
Roddenberry became concerned at the concentration of the fanbase on Spock and not Kirk. He wrote to his friend, noted science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, for advice on what to do about the situation. They corresponded several times on the subject, and Asimov suggested several ideas to enhance Kirk's popularity. These included placing the character in disguises to make Kirk seem more fun, or to create situations where Spock must save Kirk's life to demonstrate who the more important character was.[38]

why don't you like rings of power?
I have a billion reasons why and no one could do anything to make me watch it. I love Tolkien, I love the books. I’m not even a Tolkien purist because I even like the LotR movie trilogy. But I will keep this short because even me thinking about this makes me pissed off.
- NONE of the characters actually…are like they are supposed to be
- Half of them don’t even look like they are supposed to
- Elves with short hair?!
- The absolute rejection of Christian themes (I don’t care what you say about Christianity, Tolkien was a christian and his work is fundamentally christian with faith, brotherhood and sacrificial love)
- Amazon is literally using Tolkien’s name to garner money/attention with no care for the source material
-all I have heard from the actors is activism
- There is no respect to Tolkien’s name, legacy or work “because he is dead and they can do what they want”
- They have ENTIRELY destroyed Galadriel’s character. As someone who owns nearly all Tolkien’s books/works and has read a lot, she is NOT like this
-Jackson’s trilogy was made by independent film makers that were not in it for accolades, recognition or profit. They were invested from love of the craft. Not only did they give reasons for the changes they made, but they also apologized for it, trying to do their best. Amazon has literally not only made all of their advertising content around activism and politics, they are putting it on everything, carefully drumming up ads that are misleading about numbers and restricting/deleting reviews that are not favorable to them.
- That’s not Elrond
-Pretty sure there weren’t any hobbits in the second age (although I may be a little off, it’s been a bit since I’ve read)
- The costumes and attire are awful.
- Elrond and Galadriel are in laws not besties or whatever the heck they are trying to do with them
- Literally everything about Galadriel makes me hurt because she is a powerful political leader, she is proud and respected. In this…whatever this is, she can’t control her own subordinates, they treat her with ridiculous disrespect, she is condescended by Elrond (they are doing him so dirty and I love him sobs) and she is dismissed and rebuked. She is literally NOTHING like how she is supposed to be. There may be some inconsistencies in Galadriel’s long history but nothing ever suggests this much powerlessness and humiliation. She is literally being disempowered in favor of “oooohhh she can carry a sword” bs. She is powerful and amazing and great and they reduced her to THIS
- There is probably a million more things just from looking at the trailers and teasers and stills and hearing from others - both those who like it and those who don’t.
Frankly, they should have left Tolkien’s work alone. People have messed with and done plenty with older works; Star Trek, Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. but Tolkien, as probably one of the most well known father’s of what we think is fantasy, they should have just changed some names and made their own original series than banking off of Tolkien and his work.
Do you think it is a coincidence they made this a mere 2 years after Christopher Tolkien died?

This summer will mark the 35th year I’ve been into Star Trek. 35 years of fangirling TOS and TNG and everything else that came after. Which also means 34 years of shipping Spirk, even though those first few years it was more me thinking- wow, if one of them was a girl, this would be a love story!!! ( it was the 80s, people, and I was being raised hardline catholic).
So I was 11 and a half and I stayed overnight at my friend’s house a weekend she was at her mom’s and not dad’s house. She spent the two weeks before at her dads and came home obsessed with the Star Trek movies (ALL 4 of them!!!!!). She wanted me to see them. We rode our bikes past the (faaaaaar too expensive) blockbuster to the Pharmor grocery near Midway airport in Chicago to rent the tapes, made a bunch of popcorn and watched I, II, III, and IV all night.
I was hooked. Around the same time, my mom passed away after a cancer diagnosis. Star Trek became my comfort. In the world of Star Trek, my mom could have lived, I thought. They would have cured her.
I interlibrary loaned VHS tapes of the original series and tried to find it on TV. I started reading and buying the books from Crown books (which I could also get to on bike). I saw V and VI in the movie theater and had enough money to buy collectables when VI came out. I got all the cups from 7-11. I clipped articles in the paper. I sewed my own next generation uniform (red, though sciences were my thing). I made tribbles and sold them in a spot at the comic shop. I subscribed to the magazine and found pen pals in the back pages.
I discovered the existence of zines, and by the time I was in high school, I’d learned the comic book lady would have OMG SLASH zines she’d bring back from cons (which I didn’t/couldn’t go to) that i could ask for by asking if she had anything featuring The Premise.
(Remember that part where I said I was raised hardline catholic? Hahahahahaha yeah I was a bisexual teen not knowing what that was reading mostly Kirk/Spock hurt comfort. or even OT3 with bones. Yeah. That would’ve gone well if discovered).
I made a radio play parody where captain Pecan was protecting federation twinkies from Klingons and Ferengi and used the score music from IV and III in the background. ( Wesley got lost on the ship running around to the music from chekov’s run, fun times)
I made a part of a video where I turned my living room into the enterprise bridge made out of poster board. My friends grew out of Star Trek and I only had more fun with it.
Years after this, my dad remarried and while I was living in an apartment and going to college, stepmom threw out my entire Star Trek collection I had at home. I only had my 6 VHS movies, my scrapbook, a small amount of my own art, my pins, and the books Ishmael, How Much for Just the Planet, uhura’s song, Spock’s world, dwellers in the crucible, killing time, and doctors orders. Everything else, gone. All my zines, my books, my art, the model enterprise… gone. About 15 years later, I also discovered my card collection while cleaning out my dad’s trailer after he passed. They probably thought it’d be worth money.
It’s a different world now. I have my own things. I have kids, some of who are grown. I married a Star Wars fan (hilarious in many ways as we are fans of both now though I added Stargate to my fangirling to make a trifecta). I can find friends on the internet with the same ridiculous sense of humor as I have and the same geeking out I do. And I have new content getting created all the time to enjoy for the foreseeable future.
What a great time to be a long-term Star Trek fan.
Though I sure wish I still had those 7-11 cups.

"Fans noticed one character missing" actually I noticed 4 and all of them have pretty decent reasons NOT to be there. Akechi's status is currently unclear, Sumi is not a Phantom Thief, Zenkichi is a cop from another precinct, and Sophia... not sure why she's not here but I'm sure Ichinose and her are off doing their own thing. Not every Persona-User has to be present in every game we saw what happened in pq2.
It’s not even like you have to dislike Akechi to see a problem with complaining that he’s not in the P5X trailer, there are several reasons he wouldn’t be there such as:
1) if Goro is in the game it makes no damn sense to put him in a trailer since, you know, he’s a character of major plot importance and is also presumed dead at the moment so it wouldn’t make sense for him to cameo because *why would he want people to notice hime*
2) I don’t think we know yet the extent to which the other Phantom Thieves are in this game and if they’re not more than cameos who also show up in the OP to cement the tie-in then Goro certainly wouldn’t be there
3) Why on EARTH would you want something as plot important as Goro finally coming back to be in a *Chinese spin-off mobile game*
4) Goro would not care about these new Phantom Thieves unless the originals were somehow involved and we all know this. If he’s at the point where he’s like “huh new Phantom Thieves? I’m going to help them for reasons” that’s major character development that would have happened off screen because *GORO IS NEVER ALLOWED TO INTERACT WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN JOKER*
5) “well he doesn’t have to be in a plot important capacity” I refer you back to point 1 he is *presumed dead* at the moment and if We can see him Joker can see him which is the thing he is avoiding at the moment for reasons that should maybe be disclosed in a game getting a worldwide release
Just because a character was important in the game doesn’t mean they have to be the center of fuckign everything do you WANT Star Trek Picard/Rise of Skywalker/*insert bad series that made everything revolve around this one super cool character to the detriment of everyone else*
Goro got a good amount of character focus in both the original and Royal, it’s why Scramble giving Haru, Yusuke, and Ann any attention was so welcome, he doesn’t need to be the center of everything
And anyway this is a pointless discussion because IF HE IS IN THE GAME HE WOULDN’T BE IN THE FUCKING TRAILER

Happy Birthday Emun Elliott the Scottish theatre, film and television actor.
Born in Edinburgh n 28th November 1983 as Emun Mohammadi, and brought up in Portobello, and Duddingston, his father is of Persian descent. Emun was educated at George Heriot’s School before going on to Aberdeen University and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
Elliots first break was appearing in an episode of Monarch of the Glen in 2005, we then saw him in the Scottish Cop sitcom, Feel the Force.
In 2009 Elliott starred in a TV mini-series called “Paradox” in which the lab he works at as a physicist is named ‘Prometheus’ and he has a “chance’ to change the future because he has insight to the future. In Elliott’s real future. Three years later, he would star in Ridley Scott’s film named 'Prometheus’ as a character named  Chance, Mark Bonnar also starred in the series.
One off appearances in Inspector George Gently and Vera were followed up with Game of Thrones, where he played the character Marillion in four episodes. He was then in the Glasgow Drama series, Lip Service on BBC Three and another sitcom Threesome. His biggest role to date was arguably in the BBC period drama, The Paradise, where he played John Moray, the shop’s owner. We saw him in the 2017 series Trust Me, which was set in his home town Edinburgh and starred Jodie Whittaker. Elliot also cropped up in the latest Kingsmen movie last year.
Emun appeared in the dark comedy drama Guilt an excellent series, where he again teamed up with Mark Bonnar. Fresh Meat and Gary: Tank Commander star Greg McHugh, the lovely Phyllis Logan, featured in the second series, the third and final season is being filmed in Scotland just now, and should be on our screens next year.
The past year Emun showed up in the sitcom  Hullraisers and a British indie film, Phea. Emun has a few irons in the fire as well as Guilt,  Walking to Paris, I mentioned last year is still in post production, but a trailer was released in the spring, The Peter Greenaway film, set in the early 1900s, the story takes place when Brancusi was 27-year-old and follows his 18-month trek from Bucharest to Paris to reach the metropolis of world culture.  Northern Comfort is also in post production and co-stars the excellent Timothy Spall. He is also filming  The Gold a TV Series with fellow Scot  Jack Lowden, the BBC drama will  tell the story of the Brink's-Mat robbery.  And finally one I am really looking forward to is a prequel, a Paramount+ series called Sexy Beast, it  will track the origin story of the Gal Dove, originally played brilliantly by Ben Kingsley.

That huge smile on Serena's face after she says oh go on and Bernie starts flapping to grab her arms.
What if you could be happier than you ever dreamed possible?
Catherine Russell acting every microsecond of every scene.
And Jemma Redgrave's arm flapping really is delightful

So.... In the Bernie Wolfe comes to Holby trailer below -- Bernie in voice over says: "My soldiers are my family but now I'm back. Home? I don't know where home truly is anymore."

Bernie Wolfe leaves at the end of S23:24 -- "Home...to Serena"
Bernie knows where home is now.
I know I know....
But so much of Berena feels so carefully written and tended.

There's a hairy humanoid beast lurking in the Louisiana swamps, but only trapper Joe Canton (Jack Elam) has seen it and lived to tell the tale, and the other residents of Oil City, Louisiana don't talk about it. But that's not about to stop intrepid grad students Pahoo (Dennis Fimple) and Rives (John David Carson), who are determined to track down the Bigfoot-like creature. Defying local sheriff Billy Carter (Bill Thurman), the duo trek deep into the wilds of Black Lake, and a series of frightening encounters make it clear the monster is no mere legend.

☕️ on the modern Star Trek films!!!
Ah the Kelvin-verse movies. Something of a mixed bag there.
So the 2009 movie was not a bad starting point for the reboot series. It did forget that canon Kirk was not the casanova that external media likes to flanderize him into and it was clearly aiming at a younger crowd by having the characters be academy graduates - or nearly, anyway - instead of the more seasoned officers of the original series. But for what it was intended to be, a reboot meant to appeal to new fans and current fans alike, it wasn't a bad combination of nostalgia points and new ground.
To some degree it was a retread of the movie plot from the second Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan. Someone with history with the crew plots revenge that is years in the making. There are a lot of parallels in there and I could probably do a rewatch of both in order to refresh my memory on Khan before spending the 2009 movie listing them out. But while many complain that the 2009 reboot is missing the heart of Star Trek - the philosophical question - I tend to disagree. While it's not well executed, the movie is about identity, the existence of 'no win' scenarios, and the price of vengeance. So it does have that philosophical side in there, though its definitely heavier on the action side. But as a jumping off point, it could have easily gotten better from there. And it didn't.
The big problems really started with the second movie. Mainly because in retreading The Wrath of Khan for the second time in what was, at the time, only a two movie continuity, was a really bad choice. White washing an Indian character previously played by a Mexican actor who in no way ever really looked Indian was a bad choice. Stripping away the personal touches of Khan's hatred for Kirk was a bad choice. Recreating Spock's death scene with his position swapped with Kirk's was well acted, but such a blatant nostalgia grab that it was a bad choice.
Transporaters that can take you from Earth to Qo'nos without at least the mention of relays? Do I even need to say it?
The second movie was just riddled with bad choices, blatant nostalgia grabs, and the semblance of an admiral gone bad plot that Star Trek had done better many times before. I remember thinking that surely they weren't doing Khan, that was just rumors, that one actress in the trailer looks too much like Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, of course they're doing a fresh take on the second pilot. And they didn't. I wish they had, Cumberbatch would have made a better Gary Mitchell than Khan.
Thus the second movie was a retread of the same ground the first movie retread, even more poorly than the first movie and incredibly offensively to boot. It leaned even harder into the casanova maverick that people who aren't fans of the show don't seem to understand was young Picard, not young Kirk. About the only plot that really worked in there was Kirk wondering if maybe he really was too inexperienced (YES) to being Captain of a ship like the Enterprise. And even that botched the landing by having Kirk turning the con over to a more experienced officer to go sacrifice his life for the crew... and somehow this was the experience that made him worthy of captaincy and ready to make all the good captain-y decisions now?
*heavy sigh* okay Jan. Sure thing.
It was just so busy trying to embody everyone's favorite memories about Trek that the movie failed to be anyone's favorite memory of Trek.
The third movie, though. That one actually wasn't so bad. It was, to some degree, once again a retread of the some of the same ground that came directly before it. But thankfully not of Khan. The last thing we needed was a third Wrath of Khan nostalgia trip and, thankfully, they finally figured that out.
The third movie retreads Kirk not feeling like he's the best choice of Captain and maybe he needs to get out of that chair, which is the main point where it retreads the preceding movie. Though it does so in a way that mimics where the original series movies had Kirk at in the first few movies when he slowly realized he let himself get booted up to Admiral too soon. Which, at reboot Kirk's age, really doesn't work.
But we do have a decent examination of when the foreign terrorists we're so afraid of turn out to actually be our own people. Which is something the United States has been trying to pretend isn't going on with increasing number of mass shootings going on over the years. (gun control laws, please) More relevant now than ever, an unfortunate lament of many Star Trek episodes over the years and it certainly applies to this movie too.
It's not a perfect philosophical metaphor and the answer presented is more shooty-shooty than 'attempts at de-escalation' that I think ToS and TNG would have aimed for. But it's not necessarily a bad thing for it to say that a defensive shooty-shooty response is the right one in some circumstances. (It's been a long day and I'm sleepy. Shooty-shooty, mmkay?)
The movie is also about Kirk proving to himself that he does have what it takes to be the Captain his crew needs. And a strong reminder that it's not about the ship, it's about the crew. Booting himself upstairs would be a mistake because he's exactly who the crew needs for a Captain and who Starfleet needs sitting in the command chair of their flagship.
Overall? The third movie is the one that feels most like it has the spirit of OG Star Trek to me. And it was the one that relying the least on nostalgia throw backs to OG Trek's greatest hits. It had something new to say and while it was clunky... it was clunky in a way that isn't exactly uncommon in the non-reboot Star Trek that preceded it.
I think if Into Darkness were to, uh, disappear into the void, then the first and third reboot movies would make a fairly decent duology. Assuming that fourth movie they've been taunting us with for years never happens.
