notes for fanfic writers from a current metalhead with knowledge about the metal scene in the 80s (my mom was an 80s metalhead):
of course, everyone is free to write eddie however the hell they want! but after reading idk how many fanfics, a lot of them written by people who aren't into metal themselves, i thought i could share a couple of things!
- the fact that eddie deals drugs doesn't automatically mean he uses them. he might smoke a joint every once in a while, but a lot of metalheads just stick to beer and booze.
- i love the mental image of eddie wearing makeup. however, realistically, eddie wouldn't be wearing makeup. not even when performing. the most he would wear is black nail polish, maybe some eyeliner during shows. yes, there's a subgenre of metal where the musicians do wear makeup like eyeshadow and lipstick, however, that is not the type of metal eddie listens to (with the exception of W.A.S.P. who had members who did wear eyeliner)
- eddie would absolutely love a lot of music that isn't necessarily metal, especially 60s and 70s rock, like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix ect. he would absolutely admire David Bowie. and i'll let you guys in on a little secret. a lot of metalheads love the fuck out of ABBA. he might not admit it to his friends (he doesn't want to look uncool), but ABBA is notorious for actually making very technical music, and for using elaborate mixing techniques on their albums. that alone would get eddie to listen to it.
- that being said, there are also definitely bands he would absolutely not listen to. i've seen people mention eddie listening to Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe. he wouldn't. eddie listens to heavy metal, trash metal, and the beginnings of black metal. bands like Mötley Crüe are more glam leaning than heavy metal. and 80s metalheads listening to eddie's subgenres of metal wouldn't be caught dead listening to glam metal. i know, it's a weird thing.
- a short list of metalbands that eddie does listen to (both canon and assumptions): Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Mercyful Fate, Venom, Saxon, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Queensrÿche, W.A.S.P., Judas Priest, Accept. of course there are more bands, but these are just a few i can list from the top of my head!
- and the most important note: eddie is a metalhead, NOT a punker!!! i've seen some writers describe him as punk, or punk rock, or him living in the punk scene. there is a big difference between the two! plus, a lot of metalheads and punkers didn't even like each other that much during the 80s. there was a bit of a musical rivalry.

Hiatus.
Hello.
I am stepping away from Tumblr for a few weeks. I have dealt with a lot in fandom over the last year, and today has been the final straw for me.
I'll be continuing to write and post over on AO3 (the link is in my bio). I have a few asks in my ask box that I have seen but don't have the spoons for right now (one asking what the EM characters' hard nos are in bed, another asking for five things I love, and another asking who my favourite mutuals are) - I will respond when I return and am in a better head space.
Apologies in advance for the fics and art I will miss when I'm away. I just can't be here right now, it no longer feels fun, and the enormity of the hate boners certain users wield for me is nothing short of terrifying.

So I've been tentatively edging my way back into the ACD Holmes fandom at a glacier-like pace, in an effort to recapture a muse a decade forgotten. Looking for bookverse SH fans to follow, feel free to like this post or point me at them.
Meanwhile, have the poem I wrote waaaay back when, for The Empty House anthology, and then promptly forgot about until going through my WIP folder.
Cadenced scales and chords discordant
Coaxed from strings, more scrape than tune
Partner with the darkling twilight
Shrouding all in fog-wreathed moon.
Softly now the lamp-light flickers
Casting ‘cross that pensive face
Shadows which betray the darkest
Perils of the human race.
A child’s hope, a father’s burden
A gracious lady’s firm behest –
But L’art pour l’art, because the Master
Is not swayed by wealth or crest.
But then! The tuneful musing halts
As convoluted lies take flight.

So, I wanted to take the opportunity to say this since the fandom is hyped with the new trailers + posters.
Instead of making constant division, drama, and discussions about which war criminal is better than the other— just enjoy the series. Enjoy the content provided, the fics, the gifs, the analysis, the complexities of the characters equally. The discussions in the fandom are always black and white, with no grey, and no in between. Why does it have to be reduced to that?
Perhaps you dislike a character because of the traits given in the series, and prefer another. Great, we all do. But why constantly fight for that? Why insult & divide, when the fandom should be united for one thing, which is enjoying the dragon series, that allows us to escape from reality.
The shitty experience most of us suffered during the off-season time should teach us that we all might agree or disagree on certain things, but we should respect everyone’s opinions without being aggressive, nor forcing your opinions on others. It’s literally a royally incestful show, why make such a fuss of it?? Let’s better team up for the hot men & women in the show.

Ok so I have a LOT of thoughts about One Piece live action, but haven't quite finished it yet-
But I want to talk about something new which OPLA adds/builds on which makes so much sense.
See, spoilers for the Manga, but Helmeppo and Koby become two of Garp's proteges, with Koby being the primary "inheritor of Garp's will" kinda deal. Helmeppo by chapter 1000 acts proudly as Koby's partner.
And I love, LOVE, how in this season of OPLA they are building that in a way that makes sense. Where Helmeppo isn't just a loser who proves himself through being inspired by Koby and ashamed of his dad.
We see it in the conversations between the two where Helmeppo, as the son of a high ranking Marine, has the knowledge of how the Marines WORK. Of whose-who in the Marine's world. Informing Koby who Mihawk is, telling Koby he's being used by Garp to get to Luffy (which isn't entirely wrong- sidenote, by episode 6 I'm really liking this version of Garp).
Koby is the one striving for a dream, trying to make things as fair as possible in an unfair world, and we are already seeing how one day Helmeppo is gonna both be inspired by that and be the realist covering Koby's ass like Zoro and Nami are to Luffy.
Love it. Brilliant. Fucking hell this adaptation is so good.

Speculating a bit…
Yuukoku no Moriarty
I think, just a thesis, that it was between that case on the train and Irene Adler that William decided he wants Sherlock to be part – key figure – of his plan
Because prior to that, the case in which he tests Sherlock, he was offering Sherlock Holmes an in
What William offered him, information on who the great criminal is, was an invitation. If Sherlock Holmes had shot that man, like William set it up, then there were only two possible outcomes
Sherlock Holmes would join the Moriarty family – the Moriarty Pact
The Moriartys would need to “liquidate” Sherlock Holmes
It wasn’t just a test of Sherlock Holmes’ character, in the very same breath, it was an open invitation.
So, I think, prior to the murder on the train, William wagered with the idea of Sherlock Holmes joining their cause
He was still scrutinising Sherlock, still gauging who he is as a man, during that train case
There had to be one distinct point at which William decided how to proceed about Sherlock Holmes. The more likely one being the case around Adler, although it is possible that first ideas formed and solidified around their interaction on the train.
EDIT: in the manga canon it’s clear William already had his sights on Sherlock for his later role when he tested him with “A Study in ‘SH’”. This obviously influences what I said but I still think his repeated offerings towards Sherlock can be seen as William wanting him in the plan either way. Either as his chosen nemesis, his curated antagonist, or as part of the Moriarty Pact, in an active role Sherlock would be made aware of.
Because previously, with that chance of gaining Moriarty’s name. That offer of Sherlock committing one murder in exchange for such a valuable information, that would only leave Sherlock to join the Moriarty Pact or die.
But once the Irene Adler case happened, those documents affirmed the Moriarty Plan. Those documents solidified what the Moriartys had planned and it gave them a lead.
A red thread, if you will.
After the Irene Adler case, that was the point when William also locked Sherlock’s role into place. When he decided their whole plan would hinge on Sherlock Holmes.
Once their plan locked into place – because it was already set it motion and only gained a more determined shape through those documents – William had to have decided that he wanted Sherlock Holmes on the other side of it.
I assume William’s decision started to form earlier, someplace between that case on the train and Adler’s case.
EDIT: obviously between “A study in ‘SH’” and Adler’s case, considering where the manga draws attention to William having locked his sights on Sherlock
But then again there is the fact that even then, even as the case around Irene Adler set things into motion, William took a wager.
Moriarty’s name. The master criminal’s name. The true name of the Napoleon of Crime.
Quite literally handing that to Sherlock Holmes, full-well knowing Irene Adler would die… I think that was a final test.
William took a bargain, the chance of Sherlock opening that letter when he heard of Adler’s death was not zero. It wasn’t likely, for Sherlock to snap and open the letter, but there was no insurance. The chance never was zero
I think that was the final olive branch. Like how they showed Adler what James Moriarty is capable of, that letter was a final invitation extended to Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes refusing, burning that letter, it was what sealed the plan.
Sherlock Holmes himself sealed himself into that role William Moriarty wrote for him. That role William tailor-made for Sherlock Holmes, and Sherlock Holmes alone, to fulfil.
Obviously, later on, Sherlock defied expectations any way. And thoroughly so. But without knowing it, he made himself one of the key components of the Moriarty Plan.
And this is entirely besides the point of how formidably they played Mycroft Holmes – twice!
Because Mycroft– That case which enabled the MI6 to be founded, that kidnapping of William, Mycroft must have seen through the scheme.
At least the aftermath, the bigger picture of Moriarty orchestrating that kidnapping must be obvious to Mycroft.
Of course, to him it is Albert who pulled the strings. Towards Mycroft, it is Albert who orchestrated that Albert’s troop would be in London, that his brother William would be kidnapped, and that William would be taken to the lair of the opium smugglers.
That plan – because Mycroft Holmes must have seen through it for what it was – proved to Mycroft what Moriarty is capable of.
It doesn’t matter that, towards Mycroft, Albert was the mastermind. What mattered is that Albert showed him “this is what I can do with my resources I have now” and essentially left Mycroft no other choice but to hand the MI6 to Albert Moriarty.
William’s whole kidnapping, the entire set-up of it, was to show that Albert Moriarty knows how to use resources he has. That he knows how to orchestrate things.
That James Moriarty is fully capable of seeing through things others wouldn’t dream of attempting.
Of course, that is probably also where they earned Mycroft’s distrust because in proving how powerful, how organised, how capable the Moriartys are, they made him cautious about them.
They have been playing psychological games with Mycroft Holmes from the beginning. From the moment Albert got wind of the MI6 possibly being formed.
And while Mycroft was left with doubts about Albert’s loyalty, there were no doubts whatsoever about his capability.
The further you get into the story, the more it all falls into place, really.

Obligatory “sorry for promising to write a lot of stuff and then not writing it” post. I am really struggling with both confidence and motivation right now. Everything I write reads like shit to me.
Likewise, I’m reblogging a lot of other people’s work as to “to read” - I promise I will get to it, but I need to struggle through this WIP first. I can’t read other people’s work while I’m in the process of writing my own, as I worry other people’s tone will affect my own.

Before I go to bed, I need to get one last thing out of myself. The complaining in this fandom is killing me.
Complaining that it's too quiet now, but when the trailers and new season come out people will complain that there's too much chaos.
Complaining that someone is doing too much or too little of something, that someone is appreciated and someone else isn't, a perpetual sense of injustice, as if you could buy a premium account with better features on Tumblr.
And what if the person whose stories I don't like, which I might even consider bad, has more readers and reactions than I do? What if a lot of people like different things than I do? Is it always necessary to despair over everything? Is that really the case, or is the problem that this place doesn't live up to our perceptions?
When I wrote the first chapter here, I got 10 notes and one comment. I was overjoyed. I didn't know that some people here were getting 100 times that and I didn't care because someone was waiting for the rest of the story. For that one person I wrote the second chapter and then the next thirty.
I never resented the fact that I was going slower than others, that I wasn't appreciated or noticed by bigger blogs. Nor have I felt that they were taking anything away from me because, after all, we all publish on the same terms.
Someone is doing plagiarism – speak about it. Someone is attention whore and peace of shit – block them. Someone is writing about things you don't like – unfollow them. We all have the tools to create this website as we see fit. Please, just do so.
