I find places like this so packed with memories. Visiting them can be like opening a memory jar. You take off the lid and the smells and sounds of a place hit you, unlocking things folded away deep in your brain.

Review: Before I Do by Sophie Cousens
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed both of Sophie Cousens’ previous books, so I was really excited to get stuck into her new one. I’ve had it for a while but I’ve had so many other books to prioritise recently. However, Before I Do has never strayed far from my mind and I’m delighted to say I’ve finally read it!
Audrey is about to marry her polar opposite Josh but she is having doubts as to whether he’s the one for her. Then Josh’s sister turns up to the wedding with none other than Fred, a guy that Audrey had a wonderful date with six years before, and then never saw again. As several wedding things start to go wrong, Audrey starts to wonder whether Fred’s surprise appearance is the biggest possible omen that she shouldn’t be saying ‘I do’ to Josh.
Tumblr media
Audrey has trauma in her past that she never really dealt with in a healthy way. We learn about this and get some understanding of why Audrey is the way she is. She is flaky, indecisive and incredibly anxious for the majority of the book but it’s all explained, giving the reader a full 360 degree view of her character.
Tumblr media
Josh is a complete sweetheart and I wanted nothing but the best for him. However, if you like your heroes complex, brooding and ‘interesting’, you probably won’t be as into him as I was. There were times in the narrative when I didn’t know how things would end for him and I was nervous he wouldn’t get his happy ending. I kept my fingers tightly crossed throughout the rocky patches!
Tumblr media
While I enjoyed Audrey and Fred’s meet-cute, there was something about Fred that put me off. I knew he wasn’t right for a woman ready to settle down, which Audrey clearly is. Perhaps if they had continued dating years before, they would have been at the same stage of life by the time of the wedding and it would have worked. However, their separation has caused them to walk different paths and they’re now in different places. I really didn’t know which guy Audrey would choose but I had a great time rooting for the one I wanted!
Tumblr media
I loved the amount of eccentric hilarious characters in this book. Josh has so many quirky women in his family and Audrey has her loveable ‘nactor’ (nanny who is also an actor) Hillary. They are where a lot of the subtle humour comes from and they were so well realised. I fully believed that all of the characters were real people, so they were so easy to laugh and cry with.
Tumblr media
Fearing commitment is a central theme of the book. It’s what Audrey battles with for the entirety of the plot, even before Fred turns up. It’s a classic trope in wedding-based rom-coms but I loved how Cousens explored it from all angles within Audrey. I also adored how it was done with a degree of humour too, which is quite a rare occurrence, because it’s not ultimately a funny topic.
Tumblr media
Audrey’s mum Vivien is an interesting character too. She is on her fifth husband but clearly has some unfinished business with men from her past. Her mother’s casual approach to marriage and bad luck with men is undoubtedly a big trigger for Audrey’s insecurity and anxiety. She also has an air of the overbearing mother about her, meaning Audrey often expresses frustration with her. I really loved that this eased over time though and that I got to see Vivien in a warmer, more vulnerable light.
Tumblr media
Before I Do is a funny, heartwarming rom-com with themes of fate, commitment and true love. Sophie Cousens is great at writing authentic characters, ship-worthy romances and stories that you can relate to. I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Book Review: Before I Do by Sophie Cousens
Tumblr media
Cute, cute, cuuute!
This book had a Serendipity meets "bad luck, that's it!" Moonstruck energy to that made it equal parts a head-in-the-sky, feet-on-the-ground romance. It was light and laugh out loud funny, with dead bats falling out of church overhangs and bridal figurines jumping off wedding cakes, yet was also emotionally rich because of how it addressed the doubts the characters had about decisions they had or had not made in their lives.
The plot itself spun on uncertainty. On the nagging ruminations of "what if" vs. "what is." What everything boiled down to was this question: is love a matter of fate or is it a choice we each have the power to make?
Audrey is about to marry Josh. However, on the evening of her rehearsal dinner, in walks Fred, her What If Guy and the man she spent one unforgettable day with six years ago then never heard from again. He was her first love, her "one who got away." So did his unexpected presence at her wedding mean something?
Was it a sign? A coincidence? Or could the universe be trying to do something else...like intervene?
As one bad omen after another rocks the wedding festivities, Audrey is torn about whether or not she should proceed. Is it a future with her fiancé, Bad Jeans Josh, that she wants? Or is it her photobooth whirlwind with Free Falling Fred that was always meant to be?
This was such a humorous and charming romcom that I zipped right through it! The vacillating timelines kept things moving - bouncing between the wedding day, Fred and Audrey's meet cute, and the progression of her relationship with Josh - from continually forgetting his name to squealing "yes" to his marriage proposal - and also lended itself well to the preservation of suspense. It wasn't easy to predict who Audrey would choose. To be honest, I was surprised by how long the love triangle had me in its clutches. I was in a conundrum over who I wanted it to be for a considerable portion of the book, and that's atypical for me. I usually know who it will be or who I prefer straight away, and that wasn't the case here.
I will say this, though: regardless of where you land with the guys in the beginning (Team Josh or Team Fred), you'll all be Team Audrey by the end of the book. Frustrating and indecisive though she may be, she's flawed, relatable, and endearing--and I promise you'll be more than satisfied with the man she chooses at the close and why.
**P.S. I don't care how cute he is, ladies, but don't be jumping off ferris wheels for a man. Just don't. It's not safe for anyone onboard!

The Good Part by Sophie Cousens Review
Summary (from the publisher):At twenty-six, Lucy Young is tired. Tired of fetching coffees for senior TV producers, tired of going on disastrous dates, and definitely tired of living in a damp flat share with flatmates who never buy toilet roll. She could quit her job for a better living, but she’s not ready to give up on her dreams. Not just yet. After another diabolical date lands her in a…

‘You know what I find interesting about the constellations,’ he said. ‘Ancient civilisations, which didn’t exist in the same time period, or even on the same continent, chose the same stars to connect in the sky, even made up similar stories. What does that tell us? That our eyes pick out the same dots of light from the thousands that are up there. When you think of human history, of all the war and conflict, isn’t there something heartening in such commonality? We have always looked to the stars for answers, used stories and mythology to help make sense of what is beyond our reach.’
‘I don’t know if I’m trying to make sense of anything when I look up. I just like knowing what I’m looking at,’ said Audrey, and her dad reached his hand up to ruffle her hair.
‘I got it for you because I think love is a seed. We choose to plant it, nurture it, and at the end of our lives, if we end up with a glorious old oak tree, with huge branches and plenty of shade, then that’s on us, not the cosmos.’'
'Before I Do' -Sophie Cousens.
It has been ages since I came here to post anything about my current read, but I can't resist sharing about Audrey's journey with all of you..
Audrey had a rough childhood as she dealt with her mum dating /switching partners while being married. She is unsure what she wants to pursue however as the plot thickens we see her interest in space evolve and wants to pursue it as a career. I loved Josh(the one she's about to be married, her college sweetheart and I was rooting for him throughout the book)
She questions herself if Josh is the one for her when she meets Fred, the one she met six years ago before Josh and spent some sweet moments. I don't want to spoil the whole plot but know that this book will leave it's mark at you.
Tw: Molestation, panic attack.
I empathized with Audrey when she was molested at 22 by her mum's partner and still she was not sure if it was what exactly happened with her, I felt for her and I wish she had all the emotional support she deserved from her mom, that was something which irked me.
I loved Clara, Granny Parker, Hillary,Paul who were a sounding board for Audrey.
This was my first Sophie Cousens read and this is definitely not going to be my last💜💜

Someone once told me that growing up feeling loved allows you to go on to love other people. Maybe love is simply a huge chain letter, passed down through the generations.
