Happy birthday to the one and only @writcraft! I know you probably feel this year hasn’t been as productive as you’d like fandom-wise, so this is both a reminder and a token of appreciation, a short rec list that hopes to highlight a little bit of your immense contribution to fandom. This is ofc 100% self-indulgent and my picks might be a bit too obvious - I doubt that anyone who’s been around for a while hasn’t heard of these classics before, but those who are new to the fandom (or just new to Writ’s works - I’m so jealous!) might enjoy this “starter pack” with my personal selection of must-reads.
There’s a little bit of everything: Drarry, Snarry, femslash, dark fic, kinky fic, angst with a happy ending, romcom, hurt/comfort. No matter the tone or trope, they’re not only perfectly thought out and executed but they also deliver profound human experiences that resonates within, and thought-provoking explorations of romance, queerness and hope. I have often wondered how Writ could be so prolific over the years, always impressing me with such flawless depth of characterization across different ships. Now I realize this comes from the amount of passion and research they pour into their work. Writ commits to fandom - and to writing - both intellectually and emotionally, bringing together their creative, fannish, militant and intellectual sides like nobody else can do. This combination breathes life and heart into every love story they create, making them all bright and unique, inspiring universal emotions while remaining deeply personal.
Writ, I cannot thank you enough for being such a kind, witty and welcoming friend, always up to discuss fandom meta, gritty fic plots, old and new ship obsessions, dog parenting, queer & pop culture references! I learn so much from you and it’s a privilege (and a delight) to have someone to share both silly and deep, insightful convos with. Becoming friends with you - an author I’ve been admiring and looking up to for so many years now - still feels a bit surreal but it’s easily one of the best parts of 2022/2023 for me. Snarry-a-Thon is an annual fest of Snarry goodness that always brings so much creativity and joy in the Snarry community. I am forever blown away by how much talent and passion Snarry-lovers have. With that in mind, I wanted to create some special recs for a fest near and dear to my heart.
With that, here are my Top 5 picks for the 2022 fest! But first...
Disclaimer: my rec lists are created based on my personal experiences and preferences. There are plenty of other stories and authors who are quite good and deserve just as much love. Another year, another Christmas all alone in the cold dungeon… Just how he likes it. Severus Snape despises Christmas. It’s a time where everyone is so happy and excited for the holidays, especially his dunderhead students. He rolls his eyes every time he overhears somebody talk so excitedly about this time of the year.
Severus doesn’t share their joy, he never has. Christmas has never been a good time for him… His father was always drunk, more than he usually was. Young Severus never received a Christmas present since they were too poor to afford him anything that wasn’t hand-me-downs.
However, that changed when he became friends with Lucius Malfoy. The rich man always sends him a present by owl. Severus won’t admit it, but he really appreciates it. It makes him feel… loved. Loved and appreciated.
Every year, Lucius tries to persuade Severus to join him and his family for Christmas. The Potions Master declines every time, though. He doesn’t want them to ruin their Christmas by inviting him…
He has come to accept that he simply doesn’t deserve a nice Christmas. And it’s fine, it’s absolutely fine… He has gotten used to it, anyway. Spending Christmas all alone. He doesn’t feel entirely alone when he receives Lucius’ present, and for that, he’s truly grateful for his friend.

Fest - Hoggywartyxmas 2022. Definitely check out this fest because it's starting soon and it's their last round!
Rec because - Absolutely beautiful seasonal fic. It's about poetry, love, forgiveness and sacrifice achieving the literal impossible of bringing Snape back to life. Beautiful character studies packed in a really rich fruit pudding fic. It's written like a triptych with three character panes going from winter to spring. This is one of my favorite seasonal fics of all time and gets a ton of winter time rereads from me.
"The rest of the tale is rather drab. It makes for no worthy yarn of Christmas."
"Tosh!" Griselda harrumphed. "Invoke the prophet who steered you to good luck during your exploits in war and peace! Tell me of the lion's resolve that shepherded you home to love's arms at journey's end! Regale me with the muse who was love's torch!"

The Lych Yew Gambit (February 2022)

Rec because - Beautiful, beautiful fic! Don't let the OMC tag stop you from reading this one. Because this is a special fic. It's one of the best character studies of Snape I read in my life. The observer POV is intimate, curious and really meticulous. You are pulled into the observer's world and it doesn't let you go. But you don't want to leave. So that works out! Honestly there is life before reading this fic and life after reading it!
In this way, it suited him to have a cipher for a lover. Yefim was a man who enjoyed lists and numbers more than he enjoyed most other people, and if Severus was going to present him with the quandary of occasionally missing him, it was considerate of him to leave a mystery in his wake. When he was here, there was the mild inconvenience of making a second cup of tea and sharing the bed, and the moderate to major advantage of sex and board games. When he was away, there was the comfortable routine of solitude and the pleasure of wondering about him.

Rec because - One of my favorite fics of the year from one of my favorite authors I discovered this year! A really beautiful fic about trauma and healing. Cedric and Harry are returning to attend the Triwizard Tournament. Of course they have to deal with a lot of their baggage about their past/the war.
“ You were a kid. I was older. I should have…I should have protected you. It’s my biggest regret, you know? I think about it all the time, wondering what might have been different. Maybe I could have helped you. Maybe we could have defeated him. Or at least if there was another witness, maybe more people would have believed that he was back.” The words tumble out so quickly and fully-formed, smooth as gillyweed. This has clearly been the fodder of hundreds of nightmares.

Rec because - OMG! The characterization! Generally I don’t really see Canon! Sirius in a lot of fics especially in modern Wolfstar. This fic has Canon Sirius the way I see him. He really cares about people. He is super empathetic. For him the Potters are not just his friends but also found family. Also really really tragic. Same for the Remus characterization.
He should have known that it had never been him and Remus alone together in the middle of London, hunched over cheap chips as their breath mingled with the exhaled smog of the city.
The wolf had always been there too.

He waits and waits, but all Harry does is look at him, a hopeful glint in his eyes. So Ron leans into him over the kitchen table, giving Harry the softest peck on the lips that lasts for longer than expected, because Harry’s startled little puff of air probably means that he didn’t think Ron would actually do it, but then he lingers, his lips warm against Ron’s.

⭐️ 2022 in Fic: Wolfstar 🌙
These fics meant everything to me this year. I’m so overwhelmed by the stories I was able to tell and how transformative they were for me. Confronting the homophobia and stigmatism of mental illness inherent in Sirius and Remus’s story, rewriting canon to expose those issues and treat them with respect, and giving Sirius and Remus so many different versions of the happy ending they deserved has reshaped the way I see the world around me and the space I can make for myself. Sharing this all with you, seeing the journeys people have gone on through my writing and reading about people healing or learning or feeling seen or just being made really really happy from these stories is the most important thing I’ve done this year. Thank you so so so much to everyone who’s read my work and talked to me about it and helped me be part of this incredible community 💖

what’s life without a little risk (44k, M, wip) Except… Sirius. Sirius, who had been locked up for twelve years, and was now running for his life god knows where. What did he owe to him?
“Well, you’ve got a godson who adores you,” Remus reminded him, which drew a small smile from Sirius. “And Dumbledore’s on your side.” Remus paused. “Is that all?” Sirius asked quietly, looking up at him with slightly teasing, but mostly questioning eyes. Remus gave him a soft look. “Never,” he said. “That’ll never be all.”

a saturday in september (1.2k, T) “Well I said, ‘there’s no need to call me sir, professor’,” he finished. Sirius let out a huge roar of laughter, his head tipping back in delight.
“Harry, I’m a very important member of the Order,” Sirius told him pompously. “It’s headquartered in my house, if you remember. If I say we need you for important business…” he shrugged, his eyes glinting devilishly. “You’re seriously gonna drag me down to London to get me out of detention with Snape?”
Two birthdays (7.8k, T, wip) “It’s my parents… they died on the 31st October. So, Sirius is usually quite sad around then. And he doesn’t really feel cheerful enough to celebrate.”
Despite the fact that Harry was sitting here with a godfather who was struggling with a fiercely private grief in front of Harry’s friend he’d only just met, and then his old teacher who was also one of his dad’s closest friends and Sirius’s partner and someone he considered family and also Luna’s old teacher… well, despite of all that, it somehow made sense. Everything just fitted perfectly into place when Luna was around.

Remus gave a soft laugh. “No, it’s not. It’s not too much. It’s a lot, because you’re a lot, and I’m very glad that you are.”

The entire room fell into stunned silence, but Sirius didn’t care. He looked only at Remus, anxious that he understood. Remus turned to look back at him, giving him the smallest of smiles, but with such mournful gratitude in his eyes Sirius’s heart nearly broke in two. Sirius squeezed his arm instinctively, and Remus leaned slightly into him.

trilogies (1.1k, T, microfic) “Moony thinks we’re all just wowed by muggle movies,” he grinned, prompting an eye roll from Remus. “I didn’t say -” “Moony, I have been to five muggle movies -” “They’re just called movies, Pads.”
Remus saw the poster as he sat numbly on the tube. His eyes glazed over the blur of colours as they did everything; until the sharp, yellow text of two words ripped up a past so unrecognisably lost to him it felt lightyears away.
Architects Anonymous (31k, E, wip with @sliebman10) Sirius frowned, flipping open reddit to find the offending sub-thread. And there, of course, Moony. His heart rate quickened as he scrolled down to the opening post, already anticipating the ridiculous diatribe he’d be subjected to.
It’s you, he thought, looking across at the person he realised he’d known for such a long time, and suddenly it made so much sense. It’s always been you.

A grave mistake (83k, E) “So you married her,” Sirius said. “You actually… really married her.” “Yes.” “You married a woman.” “I did.” Sirius’s expression was uncomprehending, as if he simply couldn’t fathom something that would hurt this much.
“I don’t see any way you can tell her you’re leaving her for me without making it obvious we already are together.” “Well, I could suggest that we want to get together?” Remus said. “Yes, and then she’s going to ask if we’ve been fucking all this time we’ve been alone in my house together, and what are you going to say?” Sirius told him. “No, absolutely not, except for this morning, and last night, and every day before then.”

Then Sirius was sat half-naked on the plastic seat of some animal-shaped car in the darkness of a broken-down ride in the middle of fucking Disneyland. For a brief moment, the absolute insanity of all this washed over him.

Remus felt the brush of fingers against his own. He was sure he’d imagined it, in the dark and the noise and the adrenaline. But then there they were again, unmistakeable this time, with that half-hesitant, half-cocky determination that was so utterly Sirius he’d recognise it in any lifetime.

The menorah was glimmering on the mantle piece, half-burnt candles still sporadically emitting Hanukkah greetings and declarations (eat more doughnuts!) in the inimitable voice of James Potter. A second wine bottle had been opened (another gift from Alphard), and Sirius was currently lazing in front of the fire, one knee bent and a cocky expression on his face as he surveyed Remus’s barely-clothed body.

“What more do you want from me, Pads?” Only you. It was right there etched into the wood. Sirius still consumed him whole, and Remus could never belong to anyone else because of it. He hated him, tried so hard to hate him, but he still couldn’t stop the image breaking into his mind of Sirius alone in his cell at nightfall, as the first night of his tenth Hanukkah in Azkaban began.

Alright so I've already done this when Nina was a Hufflepuff. Back then, she was so focused on Snape (Hufflepuff!Nina is a Snape-simp, let her be) that there were some keypoints I looked over. Now that I'm redoing the TLSQ as a Slytherin, I can shamelessly say that CHARLIE AND NINA ARE JUST FLIRTING HERE THE WHOLE TIME!!! First Post
So this is it. My first real post on Tumblr. Yay me! I guess this post is going to be about myself, and the Masterlist of what I've written, in timeline order.
I'm JohnMcHacker, and I'm a longtime Harry Pothead. (That sounds like an opener to Potters Anonymous, doesn't it?) I'd heard in passing of HP earlier, but only started reading when Goblet of Fire hit the shelves. I quickly read through all the previous books, waited eagerly for Order of the Phoenix (my personal favourite of the lot), and the rest is history.
I read a lot of fanfiction and wrote some (not very good) stuff, until about 2012 when life got too busy and I stopped writing. But HP was always in the back of my mind and I always thought about the universe, reread the books, and thought about what happened next. I picked up HP again in 2022 when I heard that fanfiction had had a mild resurgence during the pandemic, browsed through a couple, and realised that fanfiction had matured significantly in quality and depth since I left the scene. (And plumbed certain new lows, in my opinion, but live and let live I guess.)
So now I'm writing again, and I'm writing stories that I've had 10 years to think about. There's a specific grand arc of what happened after Deathly Hallows that I have in mind. As of this post (January 2023) I haven't actually started on the big events, but I'm warming up and getting there.

My stories revolve around the themes of good vs evil, friendship, family, and love. I write about the never-ending battle for justice, righteousness and love against lawlessness, wickedness and hatred, and I write about the little moments in between (ba dum tss!) of kindness, affection, romance, of friendship and family.
My favourite pairings are Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, and Draco/Astoria. I intend to write most about these couples, but I hope to also explore others along the way, as well as family in general. Because Family is everything, believe me.
So please, stick around for the ride, I hope and believe you'll be suitably entertained. And as always, per the byword of all fanfiction synopses in the golden days of yore: read and review please!

My beloved Nina, also known as the very gifted PinaNaponi, and here as @vulnerasanenturmyprince. I cannot tell you how much this lady means to me. She's on a hiatus from fandom right now, but I couldn't not dedicate some love to my sweet friend.
Nina and I met during one of the worst periods of my life. And she had no idea just how much joy she brought into my life then, because I kept so much of what I was dealing with hush hush. Our first time interacting was a literal cry for help on my end where Nina told me "if you're okay talking to a literal stranger, my DMs are open." Which just goes to show how openhearted and generous she is. She gave me so much support that day.
When I was struggling, and feeling alone, and afraid, Nina reminded me that decent people exist. She's walked through rough situations with such grace and class. All before we were properly friends. And she is, somehow, all the more wonderful when she's in your corner.
This lady is intelligent, skilled, creative, and passionate, and kind. I adore her to bits. And even when she slipped out of fandom, we've kept in touch. And I know without a doubt that whatever our distance on this earth, and in fandom, whatever life throws in our way, I've got this lady for good. And she simply must be celebrated! She writes, narrates, draws, and even binds books! Talk about a quadruple threat!
