We remain committed. We remain committed, not only to our work to progress potential treatments for sickle cell disease, but to you — the entire sickle cell community.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious, life-threatening and progressive genetic disease that affects approximately 300,000 infants born each year across the globe. For the more than 100 years since it was first characterized in medical literature, people living with SCD — like you and your partners, children, caregivers and families — have been left with minimal to no transformative treatment options, while facing the many pervasive effects of inequity and barriers to care across the health care system.
For more than seven years, Vertex Pharmaceuticals has been committed to researching and discovering therapies aimed at the underlying cause of SCD. Science takes time, talent and tenacity, but we’ve been building our teams and progressing our science. With the best and brightest on board — from research to clinical development, to manufacturing, to commercial and beyond — we're working tirelessly for patients who are waiting.  We’re continuing our efforts to pursue multiple potential approaches to address this devastating disease across the globe.
We know that being committed to you goes beyond our science. It’s about showing up and partnering with the community to work together toward meaningful change. We’ve been working to do this by empowering sickle cell warriors and building upon the tireless efforts of the countless warriors, caregivers and physicians who have long been fighting for equitable access to health care.
Tumblr media
Our efforts to work closely with the community continue around the globe, including working with the Global Alliance of Sickle Cell Disease Organizations. We have partnered with patient groups across Europe, like the European Sickle Cell Federation and local sickle cell country groups, to support the development of  patient support websites to help improve the lives of people living with SCD. We also work with groups across Europe; for example, in France, we partnered with SOS Globi to support educational efforts focused on the burden of SCD during Sickle Cell Awareness Month. This was part of their wider campaign to secure universal newborn screening for sickle cell, and the campaign worked. The French HAS (French National Authority for Health) has recently recommended generalization of screening for sickle cell disease at birth.
In addition, last year Vertex supported global advocacy groups, community gatherings, medical education, and conferences and conference organizations focused on SCD through approximately $3 million in independent grants.
Each day we come to work, our efforts are guided by the insights and expertise from you — the sickle cell community. We truly value the collaboration, partnership and learning opportunities that each sickle cell warrior, caregiver and advocate bring to enable our work to progress.
Sickle cell warriors deserve innovative treatment options and improved access to health care, and Vertex is proud to show up and work each day to hopefully bring about brighter futures for the sickle cell community.

life’s been so hectic these past few weeks/days, I had a sickle cell crisis that had me in the hospital for a week but I’m still experiencing pain (which is why I said weeks/days). I started a new job last week, and was only able to attend the two day orientation before I was hit with horrible pain and an unable to do anything but call out for God.
I’m taking it easy and what’s very clear to me during all of this is that I have to keep going and have faith bc God is there. God is there and he has everything already figured out. It’s okay to take a break, it’s okay to not stress over everything, it’s okay.
I just keep seeing videos and having conversations about God being endlessly merciful and how his word is the light to my path. I have to have my own relationship with God and my own understanding of who he is; I can do that by reading my Bible. His word is power and that power is inside of us.
This isn’t even where I was originally going but I just wanted to share some of the things that encouraged me this week and one of the biggest things was God.

Ogou Or Ogun. Spirits Of Iron In African Diaspora.
Tumblr media
This is Papa Ogou one of many in the Ogou nation.
Ogou is a Nago spirit from the Nago Nation these spirits came to Haiti from Africa. they are strong spirits and used with the Asson or Tcha Tcha (rattle) there personality falls between Rada and Petro.
Now some might think, " Isn’t there a spirit like this in Lukumi ? ” Yes. There is, He is Ogun an Orisha. One of few Orishas who made it outside of Africa and who has some similarities with Ogou: In Haitian Vodou and Santeria and so on. They both are associated with iron and metal. Ogun is more of a blacksmith, whereas Ogou is more of a soldier.
When you hold a knife, railroad spike, sword or horseshoe in your hand and you're holding Ogun or Ogou. Ogun is also the patron of anyone who works with metal.
This spirit is great even if your practicing hoodoo because he can protect you help you even help increase your energy in your workings.
There are also many Ogous in Haiti, like Ogou Kriminel, Ogou La Flambeau, Ogou Feray, Ogou Badagris, Ogou Shango, to name a few. He is also associated with a particular region of Nigeria, and is often depicted as an older soldier there names in Cuban Santeria (La Regla Lucumi) he is known as Ogun, or Oggun; In Brazilian Candomble.
The name Ogou is not a name like in Africa but is actually a title used to describe warriors and they also carry a machete, but some favor a sword. There colors are red and blue, but some Ogous take additional colors like green or khaki. Remember: if you can’t afford anything other color to wear, you can always use a (white scarf to salute any spirit.)
Ogoun Ferraille, aka Papa Ogou Feray in New Orleans, this warrior lwa is the primary figure of Saint James the Greater—the saint himself riding into battle on a white horse. He is also represented by the Archangel St. Michael, and Saints Andrew, Martin Caballero, some use Saint Peter and John the Baptist any many others depending on which African diasporic religion you want to practice.
He is the chief of all the warrior paths of Ogun durning the Haitian revolution which gave the colors to the Haitian flag.
Tumblr media
Orisha Ogun
INVOKED:
Ogun or Ogou is invoked to heal diseases affecting blood, including AIDS, leukemia, and sickle-cell anemia. He is invoked for safety and success before surgery. He also heals infertility and erectile dysfunction. Request his protection from crime and criminals. He also help finds employment for devotees.
Ogou is usually syncretized to Saint James the Greater but may also be associated with Michael Archangel and Saints Andrew, any many others depending on which African diasporic religion you want to practice.
He is a works tirelessly at the forge, in the bedroom, and on behalf of his devotees. He never rests.
He will use his machete to cut away all evil and sweep your enemies away. But he is also a tender and loving Papa. I’ve will cry when his children are in pain. Ogou also loves the ladies and he is one of the most commonly married lwa.
ATTRIBUTES: A machete, a three-legged iron cauldron, traditionally wrapped in chains and filled with iron implements, including tools, spikes, nails, and knives👇
Tumblr media
SPIRIT COLOURS: Red, black, sometimes green, sometimes red and white (the colors of heated iron), or blue and red (the colors of the Haitian flag) or Green and black for Ogun. But can always wear white if you don't have the other colors.
OFFERINGS: Red candles, cigars, rum, whisky, aguardiente, or other alcoholic beverage— incense, metal, chains, metal tools, railroad spikes. He likes red beans and rice, and typically likes Florida water as a cologne.
Fill a cauldron with found pieces of metal, like rails or railroad spike (not plastic).
He will often blow cigar smoke on people to give them blessings.
So whichever one you're drawn to like Haitian or African spirits, there's no spirit better to have for protecting than Ogun. Except, St. Michael or God of course 😃
Everyone needs a warrior. Ogun is his name among the Yoruba people. Among the Fon he is called Gu. In Cuban Santeria (La Regla Lucumi) he is known as Ogun, or Oggun; In Brazilian Candomble , Ogum; in Haiti’s Vodou and New Orleans Voodoo Papa Ogou, or simply Ogou.
Feast Day: He is syncretized with St. Peter whose feast day is June 29, St. James whose feast is July 25th, and St. Michael whose feast is Sept. 29th.

While I have made other posts about this account, this is a detailed one with images showing their ask and the post they stole. Please note this is only one of their urls. Previous urls will be listed below and updated if more are found. When this user removes their icon, they’ve likely already moved to another account as they have abandoned past accounts in this manner.
Past usernames: lynhelbet | lynhelbett | lynhelbet1
Below is the ask they are sending and I’ve hopefully ID’d it correctly so it’s accessible!
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot of an ask from the username joyfuljellyfishkitty that says “HelIo! I have been blessed many times, now I try to touch your hearts to help protect my little angel grace diagnosed with sickle cell disease. but the worst were the three strokes to the brain.
Thank you once again for getting here and for everything you can do for Grace's well-being. Donate anything please if you're able” and ends with a praying hands emoji. /End ID]
This ask is unfortunately a scam ask, as the sender is not the real mother of the child. Through some searching by a friend, the real mother and child was located that the scammer is using for their scam. I’ll also attempt to make the other two screenshots accessible as well.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot from a GoFundMe post with an image of a child in hospital care attached to hospital devices with a unicorn plushie and a snowman toy. The text reads: “Warriors Need Heroes Too - Eden’s Emergency Fund” with five hundred and fifty dollars raised. /End ID]
Below is only part of the story shown but it’s from the GoFundMe page.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot of a GoFundMe post made by a person called Keiera Ducksworth who is organizing the fundraiser. There is only a portion of the full story shown and it is as follows: “Hi, my name is Keira Ducksworth and I am the mother of Eden Causey. At three weeks old, Eden was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease, a blood disorder. My first cousin lost her battle to the disease before the age of twenty- one so I was well aware of how serious this illness really is. On October Eleventh Twenty Twenty, Eden was hospitalized at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This was not uncommon and was not our first rodeo.” /End ID]
I know this post is quite long, but this confirms that the scammer stole a legitimate fundraiser and is not who they say they are. Unfortunately the real GoFundMe is no longer active which may be why they stole its images.

Whumptober Day 3: "Make it stop"
Fandom: Linked Universe
Length: very short
Notes: mentions of blood and torture, mostly offscreen
The Yiga pushed his mask aside just a smidgen, and Time's facade crumbled as soon as he locked gazes with those familiar blue eyes.
"Please, Wars," Time begged, voice raspy from hours of screaming. "I don't want to do this anymore."
Warriors winced hard. "You have to, Time, we're so close to being able to rescue the others. Just hang on a little bit longer."
Time was too far gone to stop a harsh sob from escaping his abused throat. "No, I can't... it hurts, Wars, just make it stop, please."
"You promised, Time. You have to stay strong, for them. They're counting on you." The captain's voice was trembling, and Time opened his mouth to plead more but was stopped by a new voice.
"Would you quit talking to the prisoner and get a move on?" A true Yiga groaned, dragging their sickle along the bars of Time's cell. "Boss has something fun planned next and I have a bet going on how much he'll scream."
Time cried out as Warriors roughly pulled him upright, making too-recent wounds bleed anew. Why had Time been the one to volunteer himself to the Yiga for hours of cruel torture?
Vaguely, he prayed that it would all be over soon.

Sickle Cell and the Prison Industrial Complex
This article was authored by Professor Simon Dyson (Sickle Cell and the Social Sciences) and Professor Gwyneth Boswell of the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. It was published in The Howard Journal of Crime and Justice in 2006. Together, Dyson and Boswell highlight seventeen cases between US and UK prisons. Seven of these cases demonstrate that the care of incarcerated people with sickle cell anemia "falls well short of the minimum standards that might reasonably be required." Ten of them involved forced restraints of Warriors resulting in their deaths. To add insult to injury, the people who the criminal injustice system enlists to speak on its behalf oftentimes conflate sickle cell anemia with sickle cell trait, which is the genetic carrier state in which the person who has it is usually healthy. But, as you will read in the article, trait has been weaponized by the carceral state to reinforce preexisting racial discrimination in employment, insurance, and other spheres. And as was written in The New York Times last year, American police when they can will use trait as an alibi for why a Black person happened to die in their custody.
Attached below is a table listing the seventeen cases I mentioned above. Below that is The New York Times article.

This Wednesday September 21st, I'll be on a #SickleCellWarrior panel speaking about managing #chronicillness x #mentalhealth at @pennmedicine. I specifically asked for questions geared toward mental health and Sickle Cell not only because it is what I personally experience, but because we rarely ever discuss how the physical, medical, and mental traumas intersect and deeply impact the #SickleCellCommunity. We're out here doing the best we can everyday. So many of us do not give ourselves permission to ask for more support, especially emotionally. My sis, bestie, & fellow #SCD #Warrior @ediomi will be representing the @crescentfoundationscd nonprofit to share information on how they offer support to our community. ✌🏼 ❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🔥 #overcomingdepression #overcomingstigmas #overcomingfear #overcominganxiety #SickleCell #SickleCellAwareness #Acceptance #SelfAcceptance #SickleCellAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthAdvocate #itsokaytonotbeokay #SickleCellAdvocate #SickleCellWarriors #SickleCellAnemia #publicspeaking #publicspeaker https://www.instagram.com/p/CisdvYwOVfa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blood Physiology
Tumblr media
Introduction:
Embarking on the intricate exploration of blood physiology and disorders is akin to embarking on a profound journey through the very essence of human existence. This comprehensive journey traverses the diverse components that collectively compose this vital fluid, unraveling the nuanced orchestration of physiological processes that sustain life. From the dynamic realms of blood plasma to the vigilant guardianship of red and white blood cells, this expedition seeks to illuminate the complexities of blood’s role in transporting essential nutrients, facilitating immune defenses, and maintaining the delicate equilibrium of the human body’s internal milieu.
Within the intricate tapestry of the circulatory system, blood stands as the lifeblood, a multifaceted composition of plasma, platelets, leukocytes, and erythrocytes. The adult human body, a vessel coursing with 4 to 5 liters of this life-sustaining elixir, serves as a testament to the elaborate harmony orchestrated within. Plasma, constituting 55% of the total blood volume, emerges as a luminous yellowish liquid, a reservoir of water, coagulants, plasma proteins, electrolytes, and immunoglobulins.
The embryonic stage marks the genesis of blood plasma, a symphony conducted by mesenchymal cells. The progression from albumin to globulin and other plasma proteins in adults is guided by reticuloendothelial cells in the liver, with collaborative assistance from bone marrow and spleen. The multifaceted functions of blood plasma underscore its indispensability, from coagulation and immune defense to maintaining osmotic pressure and regulating acid-base balance. It serves as the conduit for the transportation of nutrients, respiratory gases, hormones, and the excretion of waste products.
Temperature regulation, a finely tuned aspect of blood physiology, finds expression in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). This diagnostic tool becomes pivotal in unraveling the intricate dance of fibrinogen during acute inflammatory conditions. Transitioning to the realm of erythrocytes, these biconcave discoidal cells, lacking a nucleus, become protagonists in the vital tasks of oxygen delivery and carbon dioxide collection. The narrative of erythropoiesis unfolds in the red bone marrow, a meticulously choreographed process ensuring the constant renewal of these cellular warriors.
Leucocytes, the vigilant defenders of the immune system, come to the forefront with their diverse cast of Neutrophils, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils, and Lymphocytes. As the guardians of immune function, each type plays a unique role, orchestrating a symphony that responds to infections, cleanses dead cells, and regulates various immune responses.
The intricate process of hematopoiesis, transpiring in the red bone marrow, sets the stage for the production of red and white blood cells and platelets. Hormones stimulate this process, emanating from haemocystoblasts that give rise to lymphoid and myeloid stem cells. The formation of red blood cells unfolds in a meticulously orchestrated developmental journey, culminating in mature erythrocytes that ensure oxygen transport.
Yet, within this symphony of life, disorders cast shadows. Conditions like sickle cell anemia, leukemia, and hemochromatosis underscore the vulnerability of the hematologic system. Pediatrics, with its unique challenges, introduces a nuanced perspective, classifying disorders based on affected blood components and involving platelets, erythrocytes, and leucocytes.
In conclusion,
This journey through the intricacies of blood physiology and disorders reveals the marvels and vulnerabilities coursing through our veins. Blood, the fluid that sustains life, demands reverence for its complexities and resilience. From the transient lifespan of red blood cells to the vigilant defense mounted by white blood cells, the symphony of blood orchestrates the dance of life within us. As we navigate the river of existence, let us cherish the vital fluid that carries within it the essence of our being.
The journey into the depths of blood physiology takes us through a complex network of interconnected components, each playing a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of life. Blood plasma, the predominant liquid component, emerges as a multifaceted entity composed of water, coagulants, plasma proteins, electrolytes, and immunoglobulins. Its origins, traced back to the embryonic stage and guided by the intricate dance of reticuloendothelial cells, highlight the dynamic nature of plasma production in the adult human body.
The functions of blood plasma, akin to a maestro conducting a symphony, encompass coagulation, immune defense, maintenance of osmotic pressure, acid-base balance regulation, and the intricate task of transporting nutrients, respiratory gases, and hormones. The excretion of waste products from cellular metabolism is another crucial responsibility shouldered by this luminous yellowish liquid. Temperature regulation, reflected in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), becomes a diagnostic tool unveiling the body’s response to acute inflammatory conditions.
Erythrocytes, the red blood cells, emerge as central protagonists in the oxygen transport narrative. Their biconcave discoidal structure, devoid of a nucleus, facilitates the essential tasks of delivering oxygen from the lungs to peripheral tissues and collecting carbon dioxide from peripheral cells for return to the lungs. The intricacies of erythropoiesis, unfolding in the red bone marrow, paint a picture of cellular renewal orchestrated with precision. The life cycle of erythrocytes, from anucleate immature cells to fully functioning mature cells, epitomizes the continuous process of blood cell replenishment.
Leucocytes, or white blood cells, emerge as the vigilant defenders of the immune system. Their diverse cast, including Neutrophils, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils, and Lymphocytes, engages in a symphony of responses to infections, tissue regeneration, and immune regulation. Neutrophils, the first responders, combat bacteria and viruses, signaling other immune cells to join the defense. Monocytes, often referred to as the “garbage trucks” of the immune system, contribute to tissue regeneration and the removal of dead cells.
Eosinophils, with their presence in the digestive system, play a crucial role in combating invading bacteria and parasites. Basophils, representing a mere 1% of the total WBC count, become significant players in asthma, stimulating histamine release and contributing to inflammation. Lymphocytes, comprising B and T cells, produce antibodies and contribute to both humoral and cellular immunity. Their pivotal role in vaccine development adds a layer of significance to their function.
The pathophysiology of leucocytes introduces a diagnostic dimension, where elevated WBC counts can signal various conditions, including infection, inflammation, trauma, pregnancy, asthma, allergy, cancers, and intense physical exercise. Conversely, low WBC counts may indicate severe infections, bone marrow damage, autoimmune diseases, and splenic sequestration.
Hematopoiesis, the process of blood cell formation, becomes a focal point in understanding the intricacies of red and white blood cell production. The red bone marrow, a hub of hematopoietic activity, produces erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets. Hormones, including erythropoietin, regulate the rate of erythrocyte production, ensuring a constant supply to meet the body’s oxygen transport demands.
The formation of white blood cells and platelets, a collaborative effort involving the bone marrow, lymphatic tissues, and reticuloendothelial tissues, adds another layer to the symphony of hematopoiesis. Colony-stimulating factors and interleukins prompt red bone marrow to produce leukocytes, marshaling an army of WBCs to fend off attacks. Thrombopoietin, a hormone, accelerates platelet production, though the precise regulatory mechanisms remain an area of ongoing exploration.
As the journey through blood physiology unfolds, the narrative turns towards the shadowy realms of blood disorders. A myriad of conditions, ranging from sickle cell anemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia to hypercoagulable disorders and iron deficiency anemia, cast shadows on the otherwise harmonious symphony of blood function. These disorders, rooted in anomalies affecting plasma, platelets, leukocytes, and erythrocytes, underscore the vulnerability of the hematologic system.
The pediatric perspective introduces a nuanced understanding of blood disorders, classifying them based on the affected blood components. Disorders of erythrocytes, labeled as red blood cell and iron disorders, manifest in various forms of anemia, including Iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia, Congenital sideroblastic anemia, and Megaloblastic anemia. Leukocytes disorders, affecting white blood cells, can result in conditions such as neutropenia, Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, and Kostmann Syndrome. Bleeding disorders, arising from malfunctioning plasma coagulants, lead to conditions like hemophilia and von Willebrand disease.
In reflection, the journey through blood physiology unveils the marvels and intricacies coursing through our veins. From the transient existence of red blood cells, living a mere four months before their components are recycled to form new blood cells, to the heightened defense mounted by white blood cells during illness, the symphony of blood orchestrates the dance of life within us. As we navigate the river of existence, let us cherish the vital fluid that carries within it the essence of our being.
Conclusion
In the vast tapestry of human existence, blood emerges as the fluid that intertwines with the very threads of life. The complexities and vulnerabilities revealed in the journey through blood physiology and disorders underscore the profound importance of this vital fluid. As we reflect on the symphony of functions performed by blood, from transporting nutrients to defending against pathogens and maintaining the intricate balance of the internal environment, we find ourselves immersed in the poetry of life.
The intricacies of blood physiology, encapsulated in the luminous yellowish liquid of blood plasma and the cellular ballet of erythrocytes and leucocytes, unveil the marvels coursing through our veins. The orchestration of hematopoiesis, unfolding in the red bone marrow, becomes a testament to the precision with which the body ensures a constant supply of red and white blood cells to meet its dynamic needs.
Yet, within this symphony of life, shadows loom in the form of blood disorders. Conditions such as sickle cell anemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and hypercoagulable disorders remind us of the delicate equilibrium of the hematologic system. The pediatric perspective adds a layer of complexity, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by the young and the diverse manifestations of blood disorders affecting platelets, erythrocytes, and leucocytes.
In this reflective journey, we encounter the transient lifespan of red blood cells, living only four months before being replaced, and the dynamic response of white blood cells to infections, multiplying in their thousands to mount a defense. The symphony of blood is not merely a passive observer but an active participant in the ebb and flow of health and illness.
As we navigate the river of existence, let us cherish the vital fluid that carries within it the essence of our being. Red blood cells, akin to silent witnesses of our journey, break down, and their components are reused to give rise to new life. White blood cells, the defenders of our immune system, stand guard against invaders and foreign elements. The fluid reflection on life encapsulated in blood is a testament to the intricate dance of existence.
In conclusion, blood is not merely a physiological entity but a profound force that sustains life. From the pulsating dance of red and white blood cells to the orchestration of immune responses, every beat of this vital fluid echoes the rhythm of life within us. As we honor the marvels and vulnerabilities coursing through our veins, let us embrace the essence of blood — the fluid reflection on life that unites us all.

Recently (like last week) I was hospitalized for a week due to having a Sickle Cell crisis and a bit of acute chest syndrome- which is basically pneumonia for sickle cell patients. That week was hell but it was also a break in a weird way, like I didn’t have any responsibilities to be worried about which was a big stress reliever but I was also dealing with horrible pain. Sometimes I thinks it’s God’s way of telling me to just relax and realize that I’ll be alright no matter what happens. I had plenty of love surrounding me and for that I’m always thankful.
Often times we hear the phrase “no rain, no flowers”. I have a like-hate relationship with that phrase and way of thinking bc I don’t think we should have to suffer and be on the very urge of giving up for good things to happen, but I also understand that the bad times can help you appreciate the good times.
My highs are high and my lows are LOW and I freaking hate it but all I can do is turn to God and have faith that I’ll make it. I have to extend the same grace that I give others unto myself.
Give yourself grace and love, this is your first time in the world. You won’t have the answers to everything and that’s okay.
I’m a warrior and have faith that I’ll make it!!
