Los Angeles is one of 88 separate but overlapping municipalities in L.A. County. Places we think of as towns (Hollywood) are actually just neighborhoods, while places that sound like neighborhoods are cities (West Hollywood). This is not to be confused with Greater Los Angeles, often called the Southland, five far-flung counties in Southern California jury-rigged into a single cultural unit. Here, the very idea of “place” feels abstract. It may explain why L.A. attracts so many clichés: In a place so immeasurable, so mega, stereotypes are an easy way for people to get a grasp on it, especially if they live somewhere else.

One of those zombie tropes is that Los Angeles isn’t a walking city. Actually, Los Angeles is a fantastic walking city. Exploring it on foot is how I started to make sense of things.

This, about walking the 27 miles of Rosecrans Avenue, reminded me of John Greenfield’s account of walking the approximately 24 miles of Western Avenue in Chicago.

I’m not able to find that Chicago story online now and I don't remember for sure where it was published, but I did find it mentioned in his account of walking Halsted Street. In my search, I also found Greenfield’s accounts of walking Cermak Road and walking Madison Street as well as more of his accounts of walks.

I also rediscovered Christopher Silber’s 2020 account of walking Western Avenue in four segments over four days and the 2016 story of Steve Mosqueda and Sean Benjamin doing the walk over three days and having “at least one pint at every single bar”—64 of them!—along the way. There’s a documentary of this noble quest:

These longest streets, apparently Western Avenue in particular, hold some special allure. Just last year, Edward McClelland wrote about traveling Western Avenue from north to south by Divvy e-bike for Chicago Magazine.

One thing I am absolutely never normal about is the psychology of characters in media I am also not normal about and how it's portrayed, what mental conditions they may have based on the symptoms they exhibit, etc, especially if it's impactful to their character and the story. I find it very intriguing to them, not just as characters, but as people.

With that said, I just got into RDR2 (five years late, I know) and man... Dutch Van der Linde I am going to grab you by the collar and toss you onto my inspection table and microscope, you are a whole ass STUDY!!!

— Ben Grimm: Me ocurrió algo. Cuando era piloto en la Guerra de Corea. Íbamos en misiones de vuelo sobre territorio ocupado, bombardeando las líneas de suministro enemigas. Lo que no nos dijeran era que esas líneas solían pasar por pueblos. Civiles. Eran demasiado educados para decirnos qué bombardeábamos en realidad. Serví con algunos buenos tipos. Los fines de semana, solíamos ir a un orfanato cercano. Tony y yo llevábamos caramelos a los huérfanos. Jugábamos con ellos un rato. Para hacerles sentir que todo iría bien. Y quizá, sentirnos nosotros también así. Un día había niños nuevos, todos vendados y rotos. De repente, aquel lugar parecía un hospital. Cuando pregunté qué ocurría, el tipo que dirigía el orfanato me dijo que los críos eran de un pueblo cercano al frente. Cuando regresé a la base, busqué el pueblo en el mapa. Descubrí lo que ya sabía, pero no quería admitir. Era uno de los lugares que acabábamos de bombardear. Uno de los lugares que yo acababa de bombardear.

— Alicia Masters: Pero no fue culpa tuya, no lo sabías. — Ben Grimm: Ya, así es cómo se montan las guerras: un montón de masacres que no son culpa de nadie.

— Ben Grimm: Los niños no sabían quién los había bombardeado, y yo jamás se lo dije, aunque nunca fue igual que antes. Cuando me di cuenta de que todos los niños tenían que comer algo que llamaban - siendo muy generosos - sopa, hablé con el tipo a cargo. Dijo que, para cubrir la cantidad adicional, el orfanato había tenido que reducir la comida de todos a la mitad. Los críos me adoraban. Y fui lo peor que les había ocurrido jamás. Era una guerra, explicaban. En la guerra, todos tienen un deber y nadie, responsabilidad. Pero seguíamos siendo personas. Y que Dios me ayude. Decidí actuar como una. Al día siguiente, me sometieron a consejo de guerra. Licenciado sin honores. No volví a ver a aquellos chicos.

— Ben Grimm: Sigo sin saber qué esperaba encontrar aquel día. ¿Redención? No pude compensar ni de lejos lo que les había hecho, así que ¿quién soy para ser feliz? — Alicia Masters: Oye, no puedo decirte qué sentir por mí, ni por tu pasado, pero sí que sé una cosa: hagamos lo que hagamos, nos convirtamos en quienes nos convirtamos, dentro de nosotros sigue habiendo una persona. Y nuestro trabajo es encontrarla.

— Ben Grimm: Nunca le había contado esa historia a nadie, ¿sabes? — Alicia Masters: Ben, lo único que sé es que hay tan poca alegría y amor en el mundo que, cuando tienes la suerte de encontrar un poco… no deberías convencerte de que no te lo mereces. A veces, lo que más miedo da de enamorarse… es sentir que lo mereces. Pero te lo mereces, ¿sabes? Tú y yo.

Ooh, Station 19, I have lots of thoughts.

Drug (or just general) hallucination Rigo! Honestly never thought I'd see him again, but I should've known better after Sullivan's Ripley hallucination. I really do miss the both of them.

The way that Rigo doesn’t even fault Jack for what happened despite how much they’d hated one another and owned up to his own mistake is pretty powerful- and hopefully will allow Jack to finally forgive himself.

I absolutely love how the hallucinations (Ripley, Rigo) act as therapists and give advice to the people they appear to, to help them finally begin to get their lives back together. It’s awesome, and it kills me with how sad it is. Seeing these dead guys at their peak when they’re already gone.

Also, Beckett was amazing. The way he was getting into Halloween stuff (though, apparently, just to get Maya) and the team considering murder for it- fucking hilarious.

As for Ruiz, he’s not wrong. Beckett really does need to get himself in line and behave like an actual captain. Him snapping like that is, honestly, probably exactly what the team needs. A lighthearted guy telling them that they’re out of line. It’s good to see that it’s getting Maya to see reason and admit that she has things she needs to figure out. Exactly what she needed to begin to work on herself, even if it began with a breakdown in the shower. It’s progress.

And hallucination Rigo? He’s exactly what Jack needed. Eva doesn’t deserve him. Thank you, Rigo, for helping a man you were always at odds with. ❤😭

And Eli Stern literally deserves his own bullet point just for his wholesomeness. I think he really could help Travis out a lot.
