Los Angeles is one of 88 separate but overlapping municipalities in L.A. County. Places we think of as towns (Hollywood) are actually just neighborhoods, while places that sound like neighborhoods are cities (West Hollywood). This is not to be confused with Greater Los Angeles, often called the Southland, five far-flung counties in Southern California jury-rigged into a single cultural unit. Here, the very idea of “place” feels abstract. It may explain why L.A. attracts so many clichés: In a place so immeasurable, so mega, stereotypes are an easy way for people to get a grasp on it, especially if they live somewhere else.
One of those zombie tropes is that Los Angeles isn’t a walking city. Actually, Los Angeles is a fantastic walking city. Exploring it on foot is how I started to make sense of things.
This, about walking the 27 miles of Rosecrans Avenue, reminded me of John Greenfield’s account of walking the approximately 24 miles of Western Avenue in Chicago.
I’m not able to find that Chicago story online now and I don't remember for sure where it was published, but I did find it mentioned in his account of walking Halsted Street. In my search, I also found Greenfield’s accounts of walking Cermak Road and walking Madison Street as well as more of his accounts of walks.
I also rediscovered Christopher Silber’s 2020 account of walking Western Avenue in four segments over four days and the 2016 story of Steve Mosqueda and Sean Benjamin doing the walk over three days and having “at least one pint at every single bar”—64 of them!—along the way. There’s a documentary of this noble quest:
vimeo
These longest streets, apparently Western Avenue in particular, hold some special allure. Just last year, Edward McClelland wrote about traveling Western Avenue from north to south by Divvy e-bike for Chicago Magazine.

San Diego: Point Loma
1 February 2023
Tumblr media
The hardest part of today’s ride was the initial climb up to the ridge from Ocean Beach. Then it was just a gently rolling ride on Catalina Avenue all the way to the end. A fair portion of the route is through Point Loma Naval facilities and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, but the gates and the road are open during the day for folks heading out to the lighthouse and the Cabrillo National Monument. I’d forgotten my National Park Pass in the car and thought I’d have to come up with the $10 fee, but the ranger at the booth let me through. On the other hand, it would have been completely worth the $10 this morning if I’d had to pay it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I considered riding down the hill to the lighthouse at the tip, but we had brunch reservations and I thought I better get pointed back. Maybe next trip. But it left me time to return via Sunset Cliffs and while it wasn’t sunset, it was still beautiful (and not so crowded).

I enjoyed your musings on love poems. Have you written anything recently about cities? You should post more of your writing. It’s electric.
Electric. I'm not sure about that. Very kind. On cities - yes. I'm working on a rehash of a piece I wrote about L.A (have been for a while). I might share it here. I'm not sure yet. An extract:
Everyone I talk to is frustrated, every single person has an opinion, had waded through Skid Row even. Its rawness does not stop me from going Downtown. It does not stop me from seeing squalor unlike anything I have ever seen. It’s the Federal Government’s job, it’s the State’s prerogative, the County’s doing, the City’s fault, if citizens weren’t so nimby, if America wasn’t so capitalist, if Republicans were in power, if the Democrats just acted, if the drugs came off the street, if the drugs were legal, if housing was free, if they’d just stop being, then we could solve it, then all would be resolved.
The people of Skid Row migrate here. When the winter settles in New York many thousands will walk across America towards the sun, where they will join established slum communities and try to survive in a place that will overlook them. The centralisation of poverty in one place, the squeezing of the poor, produces a rare bitter juice that taints the mouths of all Angelinos. It is not lost on them, but I am shocked they do not act. I am told they are scared:
“L.A has had a large exodus in the past several years. Rampant crime, progressive politics that some believe is doing more harm than good, and exorbitant prices. And you see the backlash from people. People who have voted Democrat their entire life are now shifting. And can you blame them? When you get constant finger pointing and excuses for crime, homelessness, lack of prosecution, you lose the veil of deterrence. I've been lucky in where I live. But there are people who get stabbed, shot, punched in the face, harassed, etc and this happens in good neighbourhoods. L.A is HUGE, so you will naturally get politics playing a major role in everything, but it does seem like it's coming to a head soon. Police departments will not tolerate getting defunded and people will not tolerate crime. If prevailing winds start to shift one way or the other, get the popcorn out!” – Jamie, ex-divorce attorney and friend. And:
Beyond it the City spreads to fit its county, absorbing once rural towns like Lakewood and Whittier as it grows. Held back only by geography, and even then, like a Virginia creeper, it climbs over and expands into the craggy valleys and brown gullies. The threat of an earthquake is the landscapes response. A threat that extends past Burbank and whiles its way down South Western Avenue, diffusing out slowly as it gets to Orange County. It circles the City State, amassing around what Rosecrans describes as Los Angeles’ 100-mile radius of influence. It is the cause of the L.A rush, the San Andreas nuisance that keeps Angelinos moving fast. And then one day, when L.A faces its ultimate shakedown, insurers and litigators will beat to battle stations, fingers will waggle, trembling signatures will be drawn on settlements, with Angelinos the only ones knowing who is to blame - the Fault that is at fault. Mutually assured destruction.

Minoru Suzuki Wants to Face Dominik Mysterio Behind a 7/11, Not in a Match
The legendarily brutal NJPW icon has apparently set his sights on Dirty Dom, though not for a match which should scare the crap out of the younger Mysterio.
Tumblr media
"Dirty" Dominik Mysterio is now a two-time NXT North American champion, which is perplexing because he's never been on the NXT roster at any point during his WWE tenure. Still, that hasn't stopped Dirty Dom from acting like the big dog in the yard.
Unfortunately for Dom, the creator of Pancrase and current ROH, AEW, and NJPW wrestler Minoru Suzuki has taken notice. Suzuki is known for particularly savage matches where he borderline legit beats the soul out of his opponents.
As it turns out, Suzuki isn't looking for a match. He wants to meet Dom in the alley behind the 7/11 on Rosecrans Avenue near North Central Avenue in Compton to beat the shit out him. Honestly, I don't even think Suzuki is aware that Dom is a wrestler. He just finds Dom annoying and would enjoy fighting him.
Someone should get Dominik in protective custody until the heat dies down. Not even Mami can save him this time.

People outside California often know of Rosecrans Avenue because of the street’s storied place in West Coast rap history. DJ Quik and Problem named an album for it. The Game and Kendrick Lamar invoke it in multiple songs. (From Lamar’s song “Compton”: “Come and visit the tire-screeching, ambulance, policeman/Won’t you spend a weekend on Rosecrans.”) On “Bompton,” YG talks about buying guns at the Rosecrans location of Tam’s, a local burger chain — the same place where [Suge] Knight struck and killed Terry Carter with his truck in 2015. But Compton also teems with house-proud residents and their tidy lawns, women chatting outside a florist’s shop, and construction workers grabbing lunch at a packed taqueria. In Greater Los Angeles, the concept of “place” is always complicated. It’s similar to our weather: It may seem blandly constant, but you're not looking close enough if you think that’s all there is to it. Populations relocate. Businesses disappear. Gentrification is unrelenting, revising the city every day. L.A. has a stupefying number of histories, each with its own claim on the land.

New Rosecrans Shelter for San Diegans Experiencing Homelessness Opening September 12
For those San Diegans living on streets and sidewalks there is another option when the Rosecrans Shelter, opens Monday, September 12.
The Lucky Duck Foundation, which donated the use of the shelter structure and covered construction costs, and San Diego County Supervisor Chair Nathan Fletcher, brokered the agreement to build it on County land.
Tumblr media
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, authorized the funding for the Alpha Project to operate the Rosecrans Shelter through a contract with the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC).
The Rosecrans Shelter will be different from existing shelters because it will offer on-site behavioral health services as well as 24-hour intakes, seven days a week. During their stay, residents will be provided services such as meals, showers, restrooms, laundry, storage for their belongings, mental health and addiction treatment assessments, communicable disease screenings, case management, housing navigation, and connections to self-sufficiency benefits like CalWORKS, CalFresh, and Medi-Cal.
“This new Rosecrans Shelter is a stepping stone for people living on our streets; it creates new opportunities for a better life,” said Chair Fletcher. “Being a guest at this shelter provides a better way to manage your mental health and the chance to beat addiction. The staff will connect people to self-sufficiency services, job opportunities, and eventually a place to call home. These are the benefits of going to a shelter. ..”
“We are not going to be a city that’s content with people living on our sidewalks. That’s not compassionate. As Mayor of San Diego, I’m committed to bringing every resource to bear to help folks off the street and ending the homelessness crisis,” said Mayor Gloria.
Drew Moser, Executive Director of the Lucky Duck Foundation said, “Our region urgently needs more readily available beds to provide immediate pathways off the streets for those suffering from homelessness. Bridge shelters accomplish exactly that…”
A commitment to keeping an open line of communication with the nearby community has generated support from the leadership of the local planning group.
“For a variety of reasons, our community has become home for many unsheltered people in recent years. The opening of the Rosecrans Shelter here in Midway reflects the product of the collaborative conversations we’ve had with City, County, and officials from other agencies to address a complex challenge,” said Dike Anyiwo, President, Midway-Pacific Highway Planning Group.
The Rosecrans Shelter is in City Council District 2 and County Supervisor District 3. It is expected to primarily house persons experiencing homelessness in the City of San Diego from nearby areas. However, all populations are mobile, and everyone staying at the shelter will be offered the same services, regardless of their last place of residency.
“I’m excited to see the Midway Bridge Shelter’s construction reach completion. These 150 new beds will be critical in supporting our unhoused neighbors. More unsheltered individuals are finding a safe place thanks to real solutions like the Midway Bridge Shelter, the Homelessness Conservatorship and Treatment Unit, the SAFE Parking Program, and the Palm Avenue and Rachel’s Promise shelters. The Midway Bridge Shelter is essential to the quality of life in my District because it provides an immediate response to the homelessness crisis in San Diego,” said Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, City of San Diego.
The new shelter is located on County-owned land located off of Rosecrans in the City of San Diego. To prepare the site, the County performed advanced infrastructure work including removing and replacing lighting, new exterior site lighting, asphalt repairs, trenching for a new sewer connection, potable water connections, power connections for the structure, mobile trailers for laundry and shower and administrative offices. The Lucky Duck Foundation is contributing to the use of its bridge shelter structure and covered the cost to construct it on-site. *Reposted article from the Times of SD by Debbie L.
