If the batfam all starred in one commercial together what would it be? How would the commercial go? Who would be in their hero personas vs. who would be civilians?
I hope you know I hated writing every word
The commercial opens with Alfred getting ready in the morning and brushing his teeth with Colgate toothpaste while telling himself he needed the extra enamel protection. The camera then cuts to him putting the final touches on his suit and opening a drawer full of fancy watches, choosing a gold Rolex.
He then goes downstairs to start breakfast, where he switches on the Keurig and refills the water using a Brita filter. Damian slides down the banister and reaches for the Fruity Pebbles to go with his Silk almondmilk. When Alfred objects, Damian says, “But Alfred, Fruity Pebbles contain essential daily nutrients like 25% of your Vitamin B6.”
Just as Damian finishes breakfast, Dick rushes down, grabs a cup of coffee, and tells Damian he’s gonna be late. They hop into a Mercedes Benz where Dick uses the voice commands to “Play that song from the Huggies commercial on Spotify” and the car starts playing Born To Be Wild.
At school, Damian catches up with Carrie for their art class. Carrie dumps a backpack full of Crayola markers onto the table and they start drawing. Halfway through, Colin Wilkes interrupts Damian with his Nintendo Switch, where he’s playing Pokémon Sun and Moon. The whole class gathers around, with the window beside them.
The ad then zooms past the window into an ordinary-looking car. The driver has his phone propped up with the Lyft app telling him the directions. In the back seat, Signal is watching through the window while licking a spoonful of Sabra hummus when he spots an MCU monster leap across a building as the streets break into chaos. Signal hops out of the moving car and redirects the civilians away from the chaos before saying into his comms, “We got a situation here.”
Cut to Spoiler already on the roof, gravel crunching beneath her Nikes. She battles a round with the monster before spotting a masked culprit manipulating it from the ground. She swings down to confront him, but before she can get to him he runs down into the subway tunnels. Spoiler follows, only to be stopped by the turnstiles requiring a ticket. Thinking fast, she whips out her Capital One credit card and gets her tickets from the machine.
She runs across the subway platform past Cullen, who doesn’t notice the commotion as he’s listening to a podcast with Beats headphones while munching on a Taco Bell burrito. She follows the villain on top of a moving train only to lose him above ground in the crowd. Then, she pulls out her Samsung flip phone and opens up the tracker she put on him in the fight.
Back on the ground, Red Robin gets the ping and hops on his Harley Davidson. While riding, he spots traffic up ahead so he says, “Hey Google, find me a shortcut.” RR takes a detour through an alleyway, accidentally spilling a bag of Blue Buffalo that the stray dogs come and chown down. He spots the culprit disappear into a busy plaza full of businesses. He parks his bike and enters a Red Robin restaurant, where he orders a basket of bottomless steak fries, pulls out his iPad, and tries to triangulate the villain’s location.
Then, Red Hood plops in front of him and orders a glass of Jack Daniels. They’re talking when suddenly, a group of henchmen enter the restaurant and hold everyone hostage as they demand the restaurant give them all their ice cream. Red Hood leaps in before they could take the Klondike bars and throws them through the tables while his voiceover says, “Now you know what I’ll do for a Klondike bar.” Red Robin stops him before he can go too far and hands him a Snickers, saying, “You’re not you when you’re hungry.” hey tie the goons up and find a piece of paper detailing where the main criminal will be, and they sent the intel to the person who’s closest: Orphan.
Orphan is out on a longer country road but has full bars thanks to Verizon’s 5G family plan. She catches up to the mystery villain and they’re neck-and-neck in a high-speed chase. She lands a tracking chip but he lands a shot in her front tire, forcing her to stop with nothing but woods around her. Suddenly, a chipper little gecko hops onto her bike and tells her about GEICO’s motorcycle insurance and roadside assistance. While she’s getting her bike fixed, she starts sneezing from the pollen and gives Selina a quick call asking her to grab some Claritin.
We then cut to Selina shopping, where she grabs the Claritin alongside a pack of extra-absorbent Tampax and a bag of Lays potato chips, getting of course a generous Walgreens discount that comes as one of many perks to her Bank of America card. She then heads to Kate’s house. Kate, who’s in the kitchen, is notified by her Ring doorbell camera. They greet each other and set up in the living room, where HBO Max gives them a whole bunch of choices.
In the middle of watching Game of Thrones, the WiFi suddenly cuts out. They call Harper, who tells them they should switch to Xfinity not just for their house, but to use anywhere they go. While reconnecting the TV, parts of the wall fall apart so Harper heads to Home Depot to get the supplies to fix it. After buying the supplies, she counts her quarters and heads for the vending machine.
It eats her money and she’s just about to give up trying to get her drink when Batman puts in a dollar and gets two cans of refreshing Coca-Cola. He hands one to her and keeps the other. He takes a sip right as he spots the Villain of the Day on another building’s rooftop. Batman tosses his drink aside and corners the villain, who turns out to be Condiment King armed with the deadliest form of superheated Heinz ketchup. Condiment King fought hard, but Batman was always one step ahead thanks to the battle strategies he learned from leveling up his kingdom in Raid: Shadow Legends.
Batman defeats Condiment King by throwing him off the roof, where he lands on Commissioner Gordon’s car, much to the latter’s shock. It sets off the alarm and Batman gives a quick apology before carting Condiment King away. The Commissioner shakily makes a call to State Farm, who’s there for him like a good neighbor. Jake from State Farm asks what the red stuff on the windshield is and it’s ketchup, so the Commissioner quickly pulls out his handy Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to wipe it up. He also texts his daughter saying he’ll be late.
At home, Barbara tells her dad not to worry because she has Pepperidge Farms’ ready-made frozen meals. While it’s heating up, she switches her glasses and logs onto her computer as Oracle. She gets a notification that there were 26 failed attempts at hacking into her computer. She smiles smugly because it’s all thanks to NordVPN that her devices are safe and she can do her duty as a Gotham hero. The commercial ends with her voiceover going, “To download, go to www.nordvpn.com and enter the promo code ORACLE for 30% off your first 3 months.”

Anat was a Sabra The daughter of a Sephardic Kibbutznik nurse and a Yekke lawyer from Bonn She fell in love with Khais Born in a PLO refugee camp in southern Lebanon And they married in Cyprus He almost got arrested living with her family in Ramat Gan So she tried wrapping her hair and serving coffee with his family in Hebron But that didn't work either Then they thought about leaving to live with her cousin David in Brooklyn But he and his boyfriend Patrick wanted to get married And were maybe moving to Berlin So she went to the Jaffa beach and stared at the sea And thought about how someday all of this would pass If only she could find someone to help Khais pass
Should she make an inner emigration? Tell me what you think she should decide Considering the couple's situation She'd be better off as someone else's bride She and he comprise a kind of nation The kind we build inside when we're alone But if they just make inner emigrations Then they'll only have a home when they're at home

What Happened to Novelist Barbara Newhall Follett?
Tumblr media
November 6, 2023
Barbara Newhall Follet was born in New Hampshire on March 4, 1914 to literary editor, Wilson Follett and children's writer, Helen Thomas Follett. Barbara had one older sister from her father's first marriage, Grace, and a younger sister Sabra, who later became the first woman to become a graduate student at Princeton University in 1961.
Barbara was homeschooled by her mother and at a young age began her love for reading and writing. At age 4, Barbara was writing her own poems, and by age 7 she was writing about a world she created called Farksolia and writing about it's language, called Farksoo.
In 1923, as a birthday present for her mom, Barbara began to write a story called The House Without Windows with a typewriter she had been given. Later on, the manuscript actually burned in a house fire, but Barbara completely rewrote it and her father published it in 1927 as he was an editor for Knopf publishing house.
Due to the success of the book, which was about a young girl who ran away from home and lived in nature with her animal friends, some considered Barbara a child genius. Barbara began to review other children's books and her book was critically acclaimed by the New York Times.
Barbara's next book was called The Voyage of the Norman D, based on her experience travelling on a coastal schooner in Nova Scotia, Canada. This was published in 1928.
Though another success, 1928 would not be a good year for Barbara. Her father left her mother for another woman, and this was incredibly devastating to Barbara who was very close with her father.
Her family was then struggling and the Great Depression of the 1930's only made it worse. At the age of 16, Barbara took up a job as a secretary in New York City, writing several manuscripts.
Barbara met a man named Nickerson Rogers in 1931, and together, the two of them travelled to many different places in the world including the Appalachian Trail and also Spain. The couple settled in Brookline, Massachusetts where they married in July 1934.
Barbara was still writing, however she was not having much success with publishers. By 1937, her marriage wasn't so happy anymore either, she began writing to her friends about being dissatisfied with married life.
Her marriage began to crumble further, as Barbara had suspicions that Nickerson was being unfaithful, causing her to fall into a depression.
Barbara's husband stated that on December 7, 1939, Barbara had lelft their apartment after they had gotten into an argument. Nickerson said that Barbara had $30 in her pocket and she was never seen again.
Initially, Nickerson had not reported his wife as a missing person until two weeks later, telling police he was waiting for her to come home. Four months after Barbara's disappearance, Nickerson requested a missing persons bulletin be issued.
The bulletin had actually used Barbara's married name of Rogers, so the public had actually not recognized or known about her disappearance until 1966.
Thirteen years after Barbara disappeared, in 1952 her mother wanted the authorities to look more into it, believing that Nickerson had something to do it due to him putting in very little effort to find his wife.
Barbara's body was never found, and there was no evidence authorities could find suggesting or excluding foul play.
In 2019, a theory that Barbara's body was found but incorrectly identified was brought forth by a writer named Daniel Mills. Mills supposedly found evidence that Barbara's body was found in 1948, but identified as another missing woman named Elsie Whittemore.
The body was found on Pulsifer Hill, half a mile from where Barbara and Nickerson had a rental agreement. The possessions found with the body were consistent with Barbara's belongings, but local police were unaware of her disappearance. The cause of death was determined to be suicide, a bottle of barbiturate residue was found at the scene, which Barbara had been known to take.

“This is not a battle of good versus evil,” Ramzi Kassem wrote in an op-ed that appeared on September 17, 2001. “The perpetrators were probably not driven to their actions by some intrinsic evil or inherent hatred of the good United States.”
He went on to argue that the Al Qaeda attack a week earlier was the result of the “resentment these terrorists felt towards the United States” as a result of “our country’s policies.”
Two decades later, Kassem, now a CUNY law professor and prominent terror lawyer, claimed in a Washington Post op-ed that, “since 9/11, the government has consistently used the law to enable, operationalize and justify the violence it has deployed against Muslims.”
And that, “the legacy of 9/11 ought to be recounted primarily through the stories of Muslims the world over who have largely paid the price of American power and prosperity.”
Next year, Ramzi Kassem was named by the Biden administration as a Senior Policy Advisor for Immigration at the White House Domestic Policy Council.
A Syrian national who grew up in Lebanon, Iraq and other Islamic terror states, arriving in this country to attend college and spread terrorist propaganda before becoming a terror lawyer, Kassem seems like a national security risk rather than a White House Policy Council adviser.
Ramzi Kassem had boasted of having “held the record for the longest delayed security clearance in the Guantánamo setting”, but even that does not seem to have dissuaded the Biden administration from bringing him on board.
While some leave behind the extremist views of their college years, Ramzi Kassem instead built a career around them, becoming a noted terrorist lawyer whose Gitmo inmate clients included Ahmed al-Darbi, an Al Qaeda terrorist and the brother-in-law of one of the hijackers who flew a plane into the Pentagon, and who was himself a key figure in the bombing of an oil tanker.
Some lawyers represent paying clients, but Kassem, like many terror lawyers, worked pro-bono, and his advocacy echoed his pre-existing support for Islamic terrorism.
In his columns, as in his activism, Ramzi Kassem repeatedly justified terrorism as a reaction to its victims. “Terrorism is but one of many reactions to oppression and dispossession and not their cause.”
While at Columbia University, Kassem co-founded Turath, an association of Muslim students, and then Qanun at Columbia Law. A fellow student described these hateful groups as having brought “under the guidance of Mr. Kassem… speakers to this campus that support violence against American and Israeli civilians… defended the genocidal program of Hamas.”
The Columbia letter noted that, “one speaker, disavowed by many of America’s pro-Palestinian activists, prior to being invited to Columbia, had said that Jews exist only to ‘dip their matzahs in the blood of Palestinian children.’”
This antisemitic blood libel didn’t seem to have interfered with Kassem’s career prospects.
Kassem’s college obsession with Jews extended even to condemning Columbia’s dining hall for serving “Israeli Wrap” sandwiches and demanding that the name be changed to the “more inclusive” Middle-Eastern Wrap. But not all of Kassem’s hostility to Jews was non-violent.
In his own columns for the university paper, Kassem boasted of throwing stones at Israel.
“On a sunny day in early August, I headed down to the Lebanese-Israeli border at Fatima’s Gate with busloads of Palestinian adolescents from the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila, and we threw some stones,” he described. “Lebanese civilians, young and old, were playfully going through the motions… Having lived through my fair share of Israeli bombardments, raids, and sieges, I figured I might as well partake in the festivities.”
Even more violent acts of antisemitic murder found a ready defense.
“Some Palestinians resort to terrorism for many of the same reasons that people from various backgrounds have in the past: namely, despair and much endured suffering,” Kassem argued. “One must ask oneself how and why a human being was pushed to the limit and saw no way out of a situation short of blowing himself or herself up.”
These defenses of Islamic terrorism came within the larger context of calls to eliminate Israel and accusations of ethnic cleansing, while blaming Islamic violence against Jews, even before the creation of Israel, on its Jewish victims.
Kassem was named a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow, a project of a foundation by Soros’ brother, notorious for its cultivation of political extremists hostile to America and its values, and worked with the Center for Constitutional Rights, a former Communist organization.
After law school, Ramzi Kassem founded Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility (CLEAR) at CUNY to provide free legal aid to Muslims accused of terrorism.
The City University of New York had become notorious for its antisemitic atmosphere and Kassem signed on to a letter in defense of antisemitic Islamist activism alongside known hate groups and terrorist support organizations like Students for Justice in Palestine, Al-Awda, Within Our Lifetime, and Samidoun: designated by Israel as a terrorist organization.
The letter accused Jews of using antisemitism to “repress activism and harass and threaten Palestinian students and Muslim students”.
Across the decades, Kassem’s college advocacy against Jews had come full circle from student to professor. And his war against this country has taken him from Gitmo to Washington D.C.
The Biden administration chose to elevate a vocal advocate for Islamic terrorists as a Senior Policy Advisor for Immigration at the White House Domestic Policy Council at a time when there are grave concerns about the penetration of terrorists through the unguarded southern border.
The Biden administration claims that it wants to protect the homeland and that it supports Israel. Putting Ramzi Kassem on its Domestic Policy Council shows those assertions to be lies. Its Policy Council includes a man who advocated for Gitmo terrorists and threw rocks at Israel.
Ramzi Kassem’s presence on driving the immigration agenda at the White House Domestic Policy Council is hard evidence that the Biden administration is putting the rights of Muslim terrorists ahead of the safety and welfare of Americans.
The White House Domestic Policy Council coordinates and develops the Biden agenda. Including a vocal activist against national security will have consequences. And the Biden administration will not be able to play innocent when one of the Islamic terrorists it allows into the country kills Americans.

(with lyrics that are in actuality just particular parts of the song that i really like, because the full thing would be too big for tumblr to let me post) Well, Sasha had heard about the Emigratzia, (aliyah) And the talk wasn't just in the family anymore, But in the Kharkov streets, there was a kind of thaw… "We're going home!" said old Saminsky when he filed his application to leave, And Anya already had family in Tel Aviv… But Sasha didn't know; 200 years among Slavs being called "Hebrews", He knew they'd only be called "Russians" by the Jews. And then on the prospekt lenina ovtobus, he heard the Saminsky's lost their apartment and were denied their pass… The weather seemed like it was never gonna pass. He chose to make an Inner Emigration! He chose to keep his alien inside! And all the bureaucratic frus-tra-ations… He chose to keep his status bona fide. And what's the bother of finding a new nation! A border isn't art, it's just a frame! Just make a secret Inner Emigration… The Holy Land and Exile are the same. [...] Anat was a Sabra. The daughter of a Sephardic Kibbutznik nurse, And a Yekke lawyer from Bonn. She fell in love with Khais, Born in a PLO refugee camp in Lebanon, And they married in Cyprus. He almost got arrested living with her family in Ramat Gan, So she tried wrapping her hair and serving coffee with his family, in Hebron… But that didn't work either…. They thought about leaving to live with her cousin David in Brookyln, But he and his boyfriend Patrick wanted to get married, and were maybe moving to Berlin… So she went to the Jaffa beach, and stared at the sea, and thought about how someday all of this would pass… If she could only find someone to help Khais pass… So, should she make an Inner Emigration? Tell me what you think she should decide…. Considering the couple's situation, She'd be better off as someone else's bride. But she and he comprise a kind of nation! The kind we build inside, when we're alone… But if they just make Inner Emigrations, Then they'll only have a home when they're at home. Compare yourself! What does all this have to do with you? How does your experience ring true? You're where, yourself? You aren't suffering anyone's regime. You're free to follow every little dream. Be fair to yourself, You needn't be oppressed to feel alone! You don't have to be driven from your home! To spare yourself, From feeling like a part of the control! With an internal diplomatic role… SOOOOO, Make a kind of Inner Emigration! It's a kind of shift accomplished easily! We all have made our disassociations, Whether on the job or in our families! And what could be more irrelevant than Nations?! When everywhere you go, it's buy or sell? But if we all make only Inner Emigrations…Then everything will only go to hell.
my favorite daniel kahn song, probably. though nakam also just has a certain allure to it that i can't quite quantify...

The Selected Works of Edward Said, 1966 – 2006
❍❍❍
Tumblr media
Originally published as The Edward Said Reader, this is a new edition from Vintage with a preface by Maryam Said, Edward Said’s wife. It is a chunky book that has about 600 pages. The collection is selected from Said’s earliest works to his posthumously published works in 2006. Even though I have read several books by Said, reviewing this book gave me another angle to Edward Said’s great oeuvre. Said’s work had a long-lasting impact not only on a range of different academic discourses but on our current struggles for social justice. Although the publication of Orientalism can be traced as the point of origin for postcolonial discourse within the Western academy, there have been many other BIPoC postcolonial intellectuals prior to Said. From both the global south and transatlantic region, people such as Ibrahim Abu Lughod, Talal Asad, Aimé Césaire, and Frantz Fanon have contributed to the liberationist struggles of black, brown and indigenous peoples against the colonizers. And as we know, despite the invention of these theories, the European settlers have not left the colonized lands as the famous quote of Bobbi Sykes suggests: “What? Post-colonialism? Have they left?” (1)
Said’s background was in literary criticism. He taught English literature at Columbia University. He was also an accomplished piano player. At the end of his life, Said co-founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim. Together they also authored the book ”Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations in Music and Society”, a collection of their conversations and public discussions about music. Aside from his academic career, Said was also active politically and was a member of the Palestinian National Council (PNC).
”The critical study of the politics of representation does not simply ask whether the subaltern as Gayatri Spivak famously explored, can speak, but what makes them sing.” (2)
Tumblr media
(Selection from ‘Orientalism’ by Edward Said)
“England has to fulfill a double mission in India: one destructive, the other regenerating—the annihilation of the Asiatic society, and the laying of the material foundations of Western society in Asia.” -Karl Marx, Surveys from Exile, ed. David Fernbach (London: Pelican Books, 1973), pp. 306–7
ORIENTALISM AND ITS METHOD
The reason I connect with Said is because of his political genius, and his subtle criticism of Western left especially within the universities. After migrating to the United States and pursuing his studies, he realized that in order to open the conversation about Palestinian liberation and the struggle for self-determination, he has to undo multiple levels of complexity. The first Gordian knot that needed to be untied was the problem of representation. The Middle East similar to the rest of Asia and Africa has been interpreted and represented to the Western audiences by European Orientalists. These academics and scholars perpetuated the pre-established system of domination. The discourse of Oriental studies (which some European countries such as Finland still have) helped pave the way for representing the East to the Western population through a process of racialization. Orientalism itself as an academic discourse became attainable by the military domination over the East. As Said argues on page 74 of the book, “...Orientalism is more particularly valuable as a sign of European-Atlantic power over the Orient than it is as a veridic discourse about the Orient (which is what, in its academic or scholarly form, it claims to be). (2)
Said brought out some uncomfortable topics for the white left inside and outside universities. Certain conversations regarding culture, race, individuality, and representation was considered nothing more than divisive by the established faculty. Suddenly, the middle-class white hippies in the universities had to fight their own whiteness alongside their forefathers’ business model, conservatism or Christianity. The repetitive conversations about capitalism by white folks got complicated considering the relationship between culture and colonial expansion. Part of Said’s work was to expose the overlapping connection between the history of European Anti-Semitism and postcolonial history.
Prior to the publication of Orientalism, the claim that “…every European, in what he could say about the Orient, was consequently a racist, an imperialist, and almost totally ethnocentric”, was something close to fiction. (1) White Leftists (in most cases men) would freely talk about the East with (or without) academic expertise and subsequently represent and translate the East to the Western world.
“Orientalism” and “Culture and imperialism” clarified that European imperialism created a situation where European scientists, artists, missionaries, soldiers, and traders became part of the same system despite their differences. Said talks about the colonial figures who advanced the racialization and subjugation of colonized peoples. Some of these figures are Jewish Zionists, and some are European artists, politicians, and settlers who uphold the colonial projects.
There is a huge list of Orientalist figures which Said brought to light and investigated in his works. The bibliography of Orientalism is digitalized on Goodreads. I cherry-picked one of these racist colonial writings in order to give an example of the type of research Said was digging up.
Here is Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt-Drake:
"The fear of the fellahin (Middle eastern agricultural laborer) that we have secret designs of re-conquering the country is a fruitful source of difficulty. This got over, remains the crass stupidity which cannot give a direct answer to a simple question, the exact object of which it does not understand; for why should a Frank wish to know the name of an insignificant wady or hill in their land?" The fellahin are all in the worst type of humanity that I have come across in the east...The fellah is totally destitute of all moral sense..." (2)

“PALESTINE AND POLITICS OF MIDDLE EAST”
Aside from theoretical concepts we also learn a lot about the history of ethnic cleansing and atrocities that has been inflicted on the Middle East and in particular to Palestinians. We also come across many existential events such as the battle of Karameh in 1968, or the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps massacre in Lebanon which resulted in 2,062 deaths, or the events of 1948 where United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 called for the partition of Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state. On page 34 of the book, after dismissing the passive idea that the colonialism of Palestine has resulted from a conflictual tragedy between two cultures/religions, Said goes to detail in explaining why the international left didn’t have much to offer Palestinians in 1967.
