"Rengoku Kyojuro's Story," Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Stories of Water and Flame by Hirano Ryoji.
"Mitsuri had once been Rengoku's Tsuguko apprentice. In the end, she'd been too different from him and had gone off on her own. But for a time, they had been master and apprentice. Given that fact, and how Mitsuri still felt her heart beat faster in the presence of her former master, she had probably voiced her agreement without thinking too deeply about it."

It’s nice to see toi8 do a male character design, and Takeda looks cool to be sure, but Ryoji Hirano getting to do a servant design is what im seated for. Shinpachi looks dope!

Yo I just got done reading the Stories of Water and Flame by Ryoji Hirano and I am so SAD!
Mitsuri is told by everyone that her hair makes her unsightly and that she will never find a man. Even RENGOKU of all people says "looks aren't everything" in response; which is true, but come on dude you are her senior! Comfort her a little. Tell her how adorable she is! No wonder this precious baby has so many insecurities and thinks that joining the core was the only way she would find a willing husband.
Rengoku goes on to make fun of his own hair: saying that it looks as though one of his ansesters ate only fired shrimp. Do you think he didn't deny the peoples claims of Mitsuri being ugly because of her hair because he feels his hair makes him ugly? Or am I just reading too much into this silly spin off manga?
Hii !! 💗 I've never actually read any extra KNY content — just the anime + fanfics. 😅
Aww. ☹️ I suppose dyed (Ik her hair color occurred naturally from her diet) hair wasn't as popular during the Taisho Era. 😖 And oof! Even tho he likely meant well, Kyo's "comfort" wasn't all too comforting. 😬 I interpret him to care less about appearance, and more about intangible qualities, so perhaps he didn't necessarily feel that both of them were ~ugly — could be he just didn't quite comprehend the emotional impact of feeling unsightly since he prioritized other aspects of himself + others. Plus, being a man (+ a Hashira aka not exactly active in the dating pool lol) prob helped.
Hope your week's going well❣️ Sending you happy hump day vibes. 🐪🤗

Live On- Part One Essay on Demon Slayer: Stories of Water and Flame
Tumblr media
Although this story was written by Ryoji Hirano and not Koyoharu Gotouge, it was still very well done. The manga is not just one story but instead two. The first story follows the Demon Slayer Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka. It takes place after Tomioka’s first encounter with Tanjiro when he tried to kill his demon sister Nezuko. Tomioka is dispatched to the mountains in the north to slay a demon that has been killing hunters up there. By chance he would also run into Kocho, the Insect Hashira, and the two of them would take part in hunting the demon down. Don’t get your hopes up though, not much action happens in this story, at least nothing too extensive or noteworthy. If anything, the story is a lesson about “living on.” You see, in the story the reader is introduced to another character, Yae, who is a young huntress. The reader is shown flashbacks of her childhood, how she became a hunter, and the father who taught her how to hunt. Her father would be the man turned demon who slaughtered the hunters and demolished his home. Yae tried to convince herself that it was a bear to avoid the harsh reality as she went out to kill him herself. She would find her father but is unsuccessful in killing him since a bullet to the head is not enough to kill a demon. The two Hashira of the story would come in swiftly before Yae is eaten by her father and cut off his head. Yae would then try to kill herself but is also unsuccessful in doing so due to her gun getting jammed. Before the demon vanished to nothing, he uttered the words “Live On.” Tomioka, being the one to hear the small, dying voice tells it to Yae to keep her from suiciding herself. The words “live on” is the one quote in Yae’s flashbacks that are mentioned twice, the complete motto being “we killed it, so we must live on.” Yae would take this as her father’s last word to tell her to keep living. She would say reflectively in response, “because we killed him.” The lesson I got from that bit on the whole “live on” motto is that if you can’t live for yourself, live for the sake of others. I, being a hunter as well can relate with this story. For each animal I kill I eat so that I may survive and what a disservice I would be doing for that animal if I decided to take my own life. It would bring no purpose to the creatures death. Same goes for Yae’s father. Tomioka might have been the one to kill him, but Yae was the one who tracked him down. All those years of teaching her how to hunt and for him to be killed by a Hashira would have been meaningless if she killed herself. With that in mind, she lives on, for the father she killed (obviously not really, but like I said, she played a role). The story would end with Tomioka sitting with Kocho at a ramen shop. Tomioka would reflect to Kocho the purpose of the Hashira. He says, “Whatever happens, my core does not waver. We Hashira are stronger than everyone else. We are the pillars that support the Demon Slayers. That is why we must never forget for whom we swing our swords and whom we protect. We can only be Hashira because we have someone to be strong for.” This more elaborates on the theme to “live on” or “be strong” for others. I think one can channel energy for the sake of personal goals or survival, the will to live in every creature is strong. In a world where millions suffer from depression, the will to live can be nonexistent. If not for yourself, always remember that there is always someone to live for and to fight for. Live on and fight on. Cheers!

12 Days of Manga 2022
Day 7: Favourite Trope
I have so many favourite tropes (especially when it comes to Shojo) that range from “The Grumpy One is Soft for the Sunshine One” to “Pretty Sure This Makes Me a Furry”. But instead here I’m going to give a tribute to all the Women With Weapons! May we one day get to see you all animated properly. (Seriously, Prince Freya might not be my favourite, but it would make for a great action anime when’s that gonna happen?)
So in alphabetical order, and only from those volumes/chapters I have read this year:
Edda from Prince Freya with a wood axe (M: Keiko Ishihara T: John Werry L: Sabrina Heep E: Pancha Diaz)
Tumblr media
[ID: A woman in a long cloak holds a wood axe in two hands with an almost sensual expression. The handle on the axe is in line with her lips and the blade just above her head. She is in a castle, surrounded by skeletons in rotting clothes, many of them with swords sticking out of them. Black Speech bubbles read “All ye who wander the empty night... your names are... brother of sleep...”]
Freya from Prince Freya with a sword (M: Keiko Ishihara T: John Werry L: Sabrina Heep E: Pancha Diaz)
Tumblr media
[ID: An adrogynous looking person (Freya) in a medievil-inspired soldier’s uniform and half-plate, smacks a sword into the side of a man in a full set of plate armour. The impact looks immense. Freya’s eyes are bright white, her teeth clenchd in determination.]
Kiki and her sword from Snow White With The Red Hair (M: Sorata Akiduki T: Caleb Cook L: Brandon Bovia E: Karla Clark)
Tumblr media
[ID: Kiki points her sword directly at the head of a young soldier collapsed on his knees in the pouring rain. Her expression is that of showing no mercy as the boy yells at her. “This grand scheme may come to naught... ... but if he is permitted to live, my brother...”]
Lucy Yang from Blue Exorcist with her black daggers (M: Kazue Kato T: John Werry L: John Hunt)
Tumblr media
[ID: A short, elderly chinese woman with her hair in a bun wears a traditonal robe. She stands ontop of a circular platform made of rock. She has a pipe in her mouth, and three daggers stick out of the long sleeves of her robes. Sound effects on either side of her read “Kting” and “Klang”. Someone off panel shouts: “The smaller demons disappeared!”]
Margret of Anjou from Requiem of the Rose King with a dagger, proving that I support women’s wrongs as well as women’s rights. (M: Aya Kanno T: Jocelyne Allen L: Sabrina Heep E: Joel Enos)
Tumblr media
[ID: A faceless woman in Mid-1400s British Clothing stabs the leg of a blooded and batterd man tied to a pole causing him to cry out in pain. “Show me the same of your disgrace... ... or else my anger shall never be quenched!!”]
Mitsuri from Demon Slayer: Stories of Water and Flame with her Katana (M: Ryoji Hirano & Koyoharu Gotogue T: John Werry L: John Hunt E: Jennifer Sherman)
Tumblr media
[ID: Mitsuri protects a terrified woman and child from an unknown enemy. She brandashes her katana in one hand and holds a bomb made of stuck together dynamite. Her braided hair flies about dramatically, she has a fearsome expression.]
Rangetsu and her trusty polearm from The King’s Beast (M: Rei Toma T: JN Productions L: Monaliza De Asis E: Pancha Diaz)
Tumblr media
[ID: An androgynous looking person with fox ears and a tail wearing an ancient chinese-inspired soldier’s uniform sits ontop of a pile of rocks. She is surrounded by dead bodies that at first glance appear to just be part of the rock formation. She has a mournful expression as she rests her bloodied polearm against her body. ‘No matter how much blood got on my hands. Even when... it coated me so heavily that the weight of it never went away.]
Silvia Sherwood from Spy X Family using a belt as an improvised weapon. (M: Tatsuya Endo T: Casey Loe L: Rina Mapa)
Tumblr media

Demon Slayer-Kimetsu no Yaiba: Stories of Water and Flame - Ryoji Hirano A short commentary
-Ehehe, Giyu’s design sure feels different.
-Those power poses tho.
-Why is Muichiro drawn surrounded by cats, asdfdg. Sanemi is badass, we stan, and ehehe, Mitsuri and Obanai share a panel.
-Cool power poses aside, Giyu’s story added literally nothing to the table. It’s a spin-off and it happened, that’s all.
-Mitsuri, what a sunshine, training with mr sun himself. Mitsuri lowest rank Mizunoto, Kyojuro highest rank Kinoe, okay.
-So Mitsuri still wears the haori that Kyojuro gave her?
-Classic Sanemi, you can always depend on him being a jerk.
-Ok, but kudos to Shinjuro Rengoku for making it this far as a Flame Hashira and physically intact to boot.
-”You’ve got a temper, but I like your spirit!” Lol, same Kyojuro, me to Sanemi.
-Ngl, it’s satisfying knowing Kyojuro has killed one of the twelve Kizuki.
-Did you have to, did you have to include the doughnut-making incident, did you have to.
-AKAZAAAAAA *shakes fist*
-This story I liked. This story mattered. Not the demon, I didn’t care about him much, but that wasn’t the point anyway.
