listen, i love cillian murphy, paul anderson, sophie rundle, joe cole, harry kirton and helen mccrory as much as the next person, but if you're going to make a show about a bunch of siblings (arthur, tommy, john, ada and finn) with a half romani father and a fully romani mother (+ half romani aunt, aka polly) who are called the g slur, marry into other romani families (esme lee and aberama gold), go to romani camps (?), have funerals in a romani family's home (john's funeral at the lee family home), are cursed by other romani people (grace and ruby), speak (theorically it should be) the romani language, go to romani fortune tellers and make it a point to say they're romani, the least they could do is hire romani actors, not white, blue eyed europeans.

Am I the only one who doesn't think that 60s era Doctor Who's trend/themes of 'protect women' isnt sexist?

Most of the complaints I see about 60s Who sexism, and the male characters of that era is largely due to the men being like 'girls stay back.' But a) there is nothing inherently sexist about that imo? Men protecting women is the most healthy masculine thing possible. And b) when the women are like 'no lol' the men are like 'okay fine let's go' and respect their decisions on the whole.

Like that isn't sexism? That's just recognising men and women are different?

okay this is probably silly but i saw someone refer to the riverdale characters as millennials and no sorry they’re fully gen z. the actors, the writers, the producers are all millennials or gen x or baby boomers but the main characters were born in 2000/2001, they are entirely gen z.

Watching the Behind the Sofa features for the season 2 Hartnell episodes (surprisingly they’re on YouTube but who knows when that could get taken down) is a weird experience because a lot of the time it’s really enjoyable seeing the various reactions and they’re often very complimentary towards things that you don’t see people appreciate enough, which makes me quite happy, and then other times out of nowhere you’ll get odd comments of a few of the actresses perceiving certain lines as sexist or something. Specifically in The Time Meddler, which was otherwise a crowd favorite among them, Steven complimenting Vicki on being clever was apparently patronizing, and they acted as if the Doctor telling Vicki to keep her nose away when he was messing with the Monk’s TARDIS was him brushing off her questions as if she needs to stay in her place or something, when in context he’s dealing with precarious electrical wires and was telling her not to get her face so close because it could give her a shock — he says as much, but they talk over it. I enjoy very much that they were often appreciating things that people look over and really getting into a lot of it, but every now and again something like that would take me out of it. Don’t like when people attribute their own assumptions or biases as the meaning of something that was totally innocent.

#on that note i love peter purves to the moon and back for not having done that #he in particular was great fun to watch in these because his love for bill and the whole show is so deep and so sincere #i would marathon the entire hartnell era with that man #classic who #first doctor #vicki pallister #steven taylor #behind the sofa #never like the assumption that something was meant in bad faith that really wasn’t #it’s stuff like that that often keeps people from watching this era #because they just assume it’s there and when they do try to watch it they find it because they looked for it on purpose #this is the kind of thinking that gives us inaccurate perceptions of characters like twice upon a time #they also brought up cooking quite a bit and i’m like…? i don’t think any companion has ever cooked during their travels #much less with that as some kind of expectation of them as The Woman #makes me think of twice upon a time where they have the doctor indicate that polly was expected to keep the tardis clean #as if polly wouldn’t smack anyone who suggested that that should be her role. as if THE DOCTOR wouldn’t smack anyone saying that. please.#begging people to stop trying to make the classic series something it’s not #rant

There's this theme throughout the show about Tommy and Polly being equals and being able to read each other better than anyone else (here's a gifset that shows a few of this instaces even though i'm sure you've seen it already 😂) and taking her from the equasion serves the purpose of breaking him further as you pointed out.

But while i do think that your considerstions have merit, i don't think that this what was planned for her character.

Based on a Cillian interview, right before S6 aired, Polly's death seems to be more a consequence of Helen being ill than anything else. He mentioned how was weird to work on the show without her and how he compared the version that was planned with her in it and what it ended up becoming.

Perhaps if covid hadn't happened and Helen had been healthy, they would've had two seasons to develop a proper feud between Michael and Tommy and that would've drawn Polly and Tommy apart (imo), without the necesssity of her death. The detachment between the two would've acted as the breaking point for Tommy.

I could be totally wrong though and SK is more of a cunt that i give him credit for (which seems to be the case since i'm 100% sure that Ruby dying was the endgame from the start).
