Shin held the long unbraided strand in her hands. She’d waited, until she had no choice but to undo it. It’s gotten to tangled in the new hair growth, just a reminder of it all. Holding the little gems in her other hand, Shin sighed. it was the last thing Baylan really had done for her, the last personal touch. She tucked the gems into a pocket, brining a knife up to her hair. It was the end, now that she had no choice. She was never good at braiding it, and she wasn’t sure she was even an apprentice anymore. With a hesitant hand, she cut through the hair, tears stinging as they fell from her eyes.

i wonder how often jedi padawans with hair have to rebraid their padawan braid. daily? weekly? monthly? like, is there a procedure/ritual type thing they have to follow to braid or rebraid it? what kind of braid is it? just a regular three strand braid with however large the section they pulled? does the braid change depending on the size of the section? would it be a dutch braid? perhaps a french braid? do they always have to look perfect and as good as possible, or do they just have to be there and look fine for what they symbolize? do they shower with it braided or unbraided? with padawans who have long hair that’s the same length or longer hair than the braid how do they keep the size and section uniform for every time they rebraid it? does the force have anything to do with it? like does the force help them figure this stuff out? does it help them keep it pristine? how the fuck do they do it?!?! …just asking for a friend

I’ve read a few fics now where Cere has Cal start his padawan braid again and, while I think that’s super adorable, I was also wondering if that would be the best course of action considering it would be quite obvious he was a Jedi because of the braid. I know they don’t want to stay hidden anymore, but at the same time I don’t think waltzing around with a padawan braid is ideal.

ANYWAYS I started to think on alternatives for a hair braid and instead of my mind initially coming up with something like “a bracelet” or “a necklace” all I could imagine was one of those phone charms dangling from his lightsaber while he fights and it hitting him or the enemy repeatedly and now I can’t stop laughing.

Tbh I don't really blame Obi-wan or Anakin for their mullets. As much as we as a fandom dig the padawan braid/nerf-tail combo, I could totally understand any human/near-human Jedi getting really tired of having the same dorky ass hairstyle for the entire duration of their padawan-ship.

So yeah, like no shit, it makes perfect sense why Obi-wan would grow out his hair into that infamous Jedi mullet that we all know and love. There's no doubt in my mind that Anakin refused to pull his hair back into a ponytail again after, no doubt, years of Obi-wan's teasing.

There's something there about Jedi Knights gaining a new form of independence once their padawan braid is cut. It's not just a symbolic transition of a Jedi's personal growth in the Force, but a sort of visible acknowledgement of a former Padawan reaching maturity (i.e. no longer needing their Master to maintain their braid/hair for them anymore).

But yeah. I like to imagine that even "Jedi mullets" are sort of an expected "phase" for newly Knighted Jedi. I could definitely see Masters and older Knights teasing or having inside jokes about it. That would be really cute, actually.
