So I Spied Another Day...

You know it was a good show when you can’t decide whether your heart is so full from all the love and joy, or so empty because it's over.

Really do buckle up, because this is a long one.

So the show went a little like this. They played the Spies pro-shoot on a giant movie screen, but any time a song started, the audio changed to the instrumental track, the video typically faded to simple background graphics, and the cast came out to perform the number live in concert style. There were also a series of audience participation prompts up on the movie screen, such as standing to deliver a line in unison, giving Lauren a standing ovation for the Pay Attention! Reprise, enthusiastically booing Dr. Baron von Nazi and the still infuriatingly catchy Not So Bad (for anyone who’s curious, in addition to encouraging boos and yelled disagreements with von Nazi, they also cut the audience participation bit from the song).

The energy in the room was so electric and full of joy and warmth. People shouted out iconic lines, went wild for everyone’s entrances, and absolutely lost their damn minds over Curtwen at pretty much every opportunity. And the cast were clearly having just as much fun. Doing This has always been my favorite, and there was something so sweet about them singing it again all these years later. We finally got Joey performing Spies Are Forever (Evil Reprise) again and it was just as chilling and beautiful as you’d expect. And One Step Ahead was just on a whole new level. I don’t want to give anything away, but the details in that performance were INCREDIBLE.

It was simply so special seeing most of the original gang come back while also bringing some new friends along. Shout out to Mariah for coming out at the top of the show so ready to play, setting the tone for the whole evening. Shout out to James for putting his comedy chops on full display (LET JAMES BE FUNNY MORE) and dancing the hell out of One More Shot (another favorite number). And shoutout to Carlos Alazraqui (taking over the roles of Sergio and Vladimir Poopin) and Tommy Link for coming into this crazy part of our world with such enthusiasm and silliness. Brian deserves a medal for agreeing to once again play the most cringe-worthy character in all of Pulp-StarCanWrecked history, and for sounding so fucking good while doing it. Tessa was having a blast in full unhinged glory and I gladly worship at her altar. Lauren is maybe the funniest person alive and deserved her standing ovation, prompted or not. Seeing Joe Walker perform live has been Item Number One on my fandom bucket list since I moved to LA a couple of years ago, and I still can’t quite believe I managed it. I’d wondered if he’d be rusty, but honestly he sounded great; it was like no time had passed. Mary Kate still has one of my all-time favorite voices and her Tatiana remains forever engaging. Joey showed up dressed to slay as a gay evil genius Bond-movie supervillain and proceeded to thoroughly deliver on that promise. And Curt… every time I watch Spies I am increasingly blown away by what he does with this arrogant, broken mess of a character. He clearly loves Agent Mega as much as any of us, and to see a performance refined and powered by such clear and thoughtful passion is just a huge treat.

(And while he wasn’t in the cast, I can’t not mention Corey. Between his roles as director and co-writer, so much of what Spies is comes directly from him and we don’t appreciate that nearly enough. And shout out to Esther Fallick for her wonderful work as Susan and the Informant. She might not have been there in person, but her incredible performance was with us the whole time.)

I know this is preaching to the choir, but Spies Are Forever really is such a special show. It’s a story about recovery, and devastating as it can be, I think there’s also something deeply healing about it at its core. For one thing, I know it played a huge role in mending my relationship with my asexuality. I will forever be grateful to it for existing, to TCB, Talkfine, and the original cast for creating it, and to those same people for maintaining its legacy with the amount of love and care it deserves. It was a privilege to be in the room as so many people came to celebrate this miraculous little musical. There were a couple of minor tech glitches (I wonder if they’ll even include the “big one”—the projector jumping over most of the staircase scene before getting fixed—in the digital ticket version), but nothing that could even begin to damper the magic of the night.

We all know that spies never die (except for Owen and the Informant, oops). And at times like this concert, I think this special little show with its short run in 2016 will prove to be just as immortal.

How did you feel about NightSun in Wind? I honestly was surprised to say they’ve grown on me. I LOVED whistlepaw and frostpaw’s little moment and how the authors have acknowledged their chemistry and tight bond. I wish they would take the leap and make them canon…

Also, do you think there will be a battle? I hope Leafstar finally dies so we can get a new Skyclan leader… who do you think will end up being Riverclan’s leader? Either Frostpaw or Icewing or a reformed Berryheart??? I have a feeling Berryheart will either die killing Splashtail or in the battle otherwise as a last ditch needletail-type redemption.

NightSun has grown on me so much, I hated it at first. But now I genuinely think they’re very healthy at the point they’ve gotten to and probably one of the most realistic warriors couples, especially with how messy them getting together was and how Sunbeam initially decided to give it a shot because she got turned down by Blazefire.

Erins please make Frostwhistle canon, it’s what the people want, wings of fire hasn’t crashed and burned financially for having gay couples so I’m sure warrior cats will be fine if that’s your concern. Anyway, given how many LGBTQ people are warriors fans it would probably be beneficial for sales in many ways.

I really hope there will be a battle, but at this point I think it’s probably 50/50 whether we get a full battle or not. Depends on how much control Splashtail retains over RiverClan. I hope he launches and attack on ShadowClan at minimum.

I still want it to be Frostpaw as RiverClan’s leader, I’m team Froststar all the way. Obviously we have the obvious other candidates of Icewing and Duskfur, but both have been specifically noted as old and on the verge of retirement by the narrative, I don’t want another old clan leader. Not to mention how many of Icewing’s clanmates begun to turn against her due to her co-operation with ShadowClan, I’m not sure how well her being leader would go down. I want Froststar to happen and I think either of them would make an excellent deputy to her, someone with a lot of experience to help guide her. Berryheart is an interesting choice but one I doubt that will be accepted by RiverClan, or even Berryheart herself given how pro ShadowClan she is. I can’t help but think she and Splashtail have a plan in which they invade ShadowClan, forcefully depose Tigerstar, and then have RiverClan do what ShadowClan did to them, and instate Berryheart as leader (obviously leaving once the clan accept her as such). She’s just so pro ShadowClan I can’t see her being the deputy unless it was to ultimately end up back in ShadowClan. Be funny if she gets RiverClan leadership by accident though. I hope her arc ends with her killing Splashtail, if she doesn’t die I can see her putting herself in a self imposed exile, realising the damage she has done and feeling an overwhelming guilt due to it.

summary: Set in the 1920′s, Thian’s mom has tried to hide her son’s homosexuality since he was a kid in order to protect the Five Dragons association which he is set to inherit. But when Thian falls in love, that lie gets harder and harder to preserve.

grade: 8,5/10

pros:

- FINALLY a lakorn that treats its queer characters right. it’s the first one I’ve seen where there is NO bury your gays or sad ending, and that actually seems to side with the queer characters instead of using society’s rejection of queerness to further the plot for the main straight couple. here thian & jiu ARE the main couple, and it’s no coincidence we don’t see yang & lingpin getting married in the finale. instead, society has to adapt to thian & not the opposite, in the end he doesn’t lose everything like his mom thought he would. this was SO refreshing!

- perfect characters. thian is perfect with a heart of gold without being boring, jiu has an extremely complex but loving personality, yang is a devoted brother who knows his own worth, the mom & her servant are extremely badass even if misguided, lingpin is so fun & lovely, mae bua eternally loving, and the dad was great as a stern but ultimately loving figure in the household. even yang’s mom was a great villain in how annoying she was LMAO. even though these characters did fit in some of the usual lakorn archetypes, it was still a breath of fresh air & they carried the show perfectly!

- phenomenal acting from everyone, especially the mother, thian & yang! honestly acting rarely misses in lakorns, but here I especially think everyone did an excellent job :)

- great chemistry between both ships, they just slayed & I loved them together!!! also the non toxicity between them with just the right amount of will they won’t they & forbidden love was SCRUMPTIOUS!

- best writing in a lakorn I’ve seen in a while!!! usually, lakorns ALWAYS let me down in some way, but this one was damn near perfect, it had the angst, it had the fluff, it had the lessons, the plot twists... and it all just worked so well & was just so satisfying to watch! bc the writing makes so much sense, the show never loses its entertainment factor & never gets overly frustrating, which is EXTREMELY rare for lakorns :)

- this is also the best looking lakorn after in family we trust by far, the decors & costumes were gorgeous <3

cons:

- this is still a lakorn so there’s quite a few over the top, overdramatic moments which makes it impossible to be graded higher, but this is definitely one of the most tolerable lakorns I’ve seen still!

would I rewatch it: honestly I don’t really rewatch lakorns bc they’re so long, but if I was to rewatch one it would definitely be this one!

I went into this show fully expecting to face the bury your gays trope again, but it actually was an incredible queer lakorn. It acknowledges its historical settings but also puts the queer characters in the right & the bigots in the wrong, and holds its characters accountable in a very rare way. Outside of the queer themes, this was just such an entertaining, non problematic lakorn, which is SO rare to see. I loved it & it’s now one of my all-time favorite lakorns <3

Secret Crush On You - the good, the bad & THE AGONY of indecision

a not so quick, and not quite pitch for...

Secret Crush On You

Rating: 7/10

(let me explain!)

Main Tropes: stalking, obsession, hottest guy on campus, multiple couples, queer affirming

Previously known as Stalker the series, and you can TELL. Co-produced by and featuring (but NOT staring) Saint and directed by Cheewin (sigh) with mostly fresh faces it was pure pulp and... I hated the plot.

In fact I was ALL OVER THE PLACE with this show.

I ADORED both queer friendship groups, and the language use that resulted, and the main character reads as out gay and a bit femme, which is lovely to see. As @heretherebedork pointed out this show is basically giving the characters that usually get punch downed on, mocked, side-lined, and pillorized, their own love stories and happy endings - and I LOVE THAT for them. And for Thailand.

The show even hangs a lantern on this in a flash of brilliant self reference:

But (and you knew there was a big ol’but coming) the stalker aspect was far too much for me. Toh, the lead, was so cringey I dropped it at ep 3 because it had become my personal hellscape of second hand embarrassment. Those whose opinion I trust WOULD KEEP talking about it here, so I gave it a second... and then a third try.

Like Bridesmaids or The Hangover this is NOT a style of humor or romcom that I enjoy at all.

As is often the case with stories of this type, initially Toh came off as desperate, needy, and awkward while Nuea had no personality.

This meant that I could find no reason for Nuea to fall in love with Toh (although sexual attraction seemed to play a BIG role and that, by episode 6 started to save the show for me). Also the only reason I could find for Toh to like Nuea was Nuea’s appearance (fair cop).

Self consciously, the narrative seemed to recognize its own flaw in this matter too and sought to address it by hanging yet another lantern (or two) on it in the final episode but, I was over it by then.

And while Nuea did grow out of his blandness, Toh never stopped being a complete nightmare (for me).

Certainly as we got to know Toh better his disposition was better understood (Austen) BUT I never grew to like him, or entirely understand why Nuea liked him, either.

I DID like how very first love and gay sexual journey of discovery Toh & Nuea’s relationship was.

This was one of those rare (and much coveted) BLs where the characters actually do seem to want to fuck each other.

In fact, SCOY’s Nuea & Toh are the pinnacle of that awkward first-time super-sexualized relationship. Their hormones practically leak off the screen. I REMEMBER what this was like. Knowing how cool you want to be, but also just craving another human THAT BADLY you totally forget your cool.

And frankly, I like that in a BL drama. Really good, adolescent first love, shown in a positive light with a pro-sex message as well a themes of communication and safe sex? We NEVER get that from Thailand. In fact, we rarely get it in any gay shows, anywhere, BL or not BL. Just ANYWHERE.

The fact that this show featured a drunk kiss that was NEGOTIATED ahead of time blew my mind. How clever. What a subtle way to address dub con.

In this aspect the actors did a GREAT job, especially Billy (who played Nuea).

There was an awkward raw visceral connection going on with these two that really worked and that previously only Taiwan and Japan have ever bothered to attempt. The other show that got this DOWN was HIStory 3 the BL that shall not be named (but the actors are clearly much older).

All that said, I spent more time cringing than enjoying the main couple.

The side couples, however.

THE SIDE COUPLES!

I lost my mind first over Sky & Jao.

A confident cheesy king who falls head over heals for the sweet scared boy with self worth issues and makes no bones about his interest?

Actually we have seen this trope before, but it was so perfectly executed with this show.

And then at the very end SCOY gave us Intouch & Daisy

Even though I wasn’t really talking about this show in the bloggosphere, I had to talk about them.

Daisy & Intouch did not have enough screen time, and I could watch a full series all about them.

I think the show runners didn’t have quite enough faith in standard Thai BL watchers’ willingness to invest in them as a couple, over which I am quite sad. Because I get why. But in this matter, at least, I wish the show had been even more brave and boundary pushing.

In the end, for me, this show was a real doozy.

It was a mix of Thai cheer meets creepy, Taiwanese in-your-face queer, and Japanese chaos muffin slapstick (like Kieta Hatsukoi).

Was it successful mixing these things?

Not for me.

It had a ton of things I really did not like (e.g. the humor was crass and awkward, and the whole thing was extremely CRINGE). It also had things that really worked: (e.g. representation of multiple different kinds of queerness, about which it very Taiwanese - in that there was no doubt that the characters really did want to bone). It was the opposite of sanitized gay. Honestly, if you can make it through the first half, and survive the never ending cringe-factor that IS this show, the second half is entirely unique - content we’ve never seen before in BL.

SCOY must be applauded for giving us, without question, the queerest, most honest, most truly gay Thai BL campfest that I’ve ever seen.

It has to be praised for everything that it does accomplish:

beautiful peer groups;

all powerful and encompassing friendship support;

those friend’s giving equally bad advice & gossiping;

discussions of topping versus bottoming and safe sex;

examinations of wife/husband language;

concerns around body image and self-worth;

AND the gross, weird, ugly, hilarious side of all of the above.

Did I love this show?

Absolutely not.

Did I want to love it?

Fuck yes.

Do I admire what it was trying to do and, to a certain extent, did do?

Absolutely.

SCOY drove me nuts and made me bush but had flashes of unparalleled genius.

SCOY was many things (a lot of them annoying af) but it what it was, primarily, was actually quite special.

So, I remain conflicted.

SCOY made me feel whiplash and I hate that sensation. But I love what it was attempting. I loved when it was suddenly very sexy but then I hated SO MUCH when it was suddenly not sexy at all. I certainly fast forwarded more than I watched. But when I paused to take it in, it did get fun and enjoyable.

If you like slapstick and you don’t mind cheese and cringe then you likely enjoy this BL quite a bit. In the end, this one really came down to a matter of taste. It’s not to my personal taste, the narrative was hit or miss, but its intention was pure gold. This one waffled from 5-9, so I ended up just going with 7/10.

RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS, just not the usual ones

Final note, the sub team on this show was AWESOME, gotta give them a shout out.

They did mad good work.

“What?” Draco said, finally looking Potter in the eye. Potter’s eyes were wide and green below his raised eyebrows. It must have been the lenses of his glasses sharpening the flecks of color in his irises, because they were almost shimmering in the light of the hundred-year old sconce on the brick wall behind Draco’s head, and oh fuck, he was still looking Potter in the eye, what the fuck, how was he supposed to get out of this, now? In which our heroes become reacquainted in a pub, spend a whole day together that turns into night, and then...? Featuring a minor freakout (Draco), a brand new song (Harry), and affectionate exasperation (all of their friends). Will Draco figure his shit out before Harry gives up? Will Harry survive the Venomous Tentacula? Will Draco ever decide which tea he wants? Will Harry's HooTube commenters ever forgive him for falling in love?

As the Lights is a stark departure from last week's read: Open Fire by Slytherco. With tags like "musician!Harry", "flying teapots", "lots of blushing", and "lots of grinning", you might expect this fic to be super cute and fluffy--and you would be absolutely right! Zezilia gives us just enough angst in this Enemies-to-Friends-to-Lovers story to make the getting together feel genuine and believable without making us doubt for one second that these boys we love so much will end up happily together. Reading this story made me feel so warm and fuzzy that I inhaled it in a day, and I highly recommend you do so as well! In addition to the classic, very gay trope of the "24 hour date" and musician!Harry's smoldering good looks and endearing friendship with Luna (who fronts a band called Luna Lovegood and the Good Loves !!!!!), there are a couple of specific things I want to shout out about this story:

🐣 Draco Malfoy's Journey to Healing His Inner Child Is there another person, real or fictional, who needs to heal their inner child as much as Draco Malfoy?? Arguably Harry James Potter, but when we meet him in this fic he's well on his way. I love how Zezilia skillfully peppers in all these little but significant ways that Draco is trying--consciously and subconsciously--to re-parent himself and to replace all the vicious, unkind voices that have populated his head for so long. His mirror has the voice and personality of someone's doting grandmum, for goodness' sake! But beyond that, we get to witness Draco learning how to allow himself to be earnest, to openly enjoy the things he likes, and to be a little weird! It helps that he has two of the world's best friends, Sophie and Ravi (Zezilia's OCs), to encourage and support him. Honestly, I desperately want a Sophie. It's so gratifying to watch Draco not only love himself for who he really is, but learn that other people will love his true self, too.

��🏻‍��️ The Wonder of the Wizarding World I adore the ways that Zezilia has woven the most magical parts of the wizarding world through this story. The way that they use magic to embellish scenes and complicate the characters lives is so delightful. Whether it's a particularly bawdy painting of a shepherd tending his flock (and other things), the most magical sounding café with Cheering Charm-infused pastries, or a magical park full of animated (and also bawdy!) statues, Zezilia doesn't hold back on the whimsy!

And a bonus: this fic is pro-Hot!Neville, and so am I. So very much.

A cozy winter morning, and a new term of endearment.

Okay, so technically speaking I have read everything Bee has ever written--much of it several times--which means this was a (blissful) re-read for me. I've gushed about my favorite stories Bee has written before (starlight (the unsuccessful return of a runaway prince), to be a bit of warmth (for you), you bring me home, their kinktober 2021 collection, for starters) but I have yet to really rec this one. Since most of my mutuals will be familiar with the way Bee writes our favorite boys, Draco and Harry, I am here to implore you to dig into their Yuri!!! on Ice fics on AO3, even if you aren't familiar with the source material!

Bee takes all the tenderness, care, and intimacy which which they write their Drarry stories and carefully molds it to fit these two lovely, anxious men. What I love most about Bee's writing is that they are able to gently pick up two characters, see right to the heart of them, and then translate all their deepest desires and fears right onto the page in beautiful prose (and sometimes verse!). This means that while morning light feels undeniably "Bee" in its tone, pacing, and use of endearments, the relationship between Viktor and Yuuri is unique and so true to their characters. Viktor (off-screen) is bold and confident and commanding, while Yuuri (everywhere, all the time) is anxious, self-effacing, and unsure. In this close, intimate moment Bee manages to capture all of their facets, allows them to let their guards down, and helps them to grow even closer to one another. This fic is warm, quiet, blushy, and so, so lovely!

As a Black person who was raised in the Pentecostal Church (mandatory service every Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat and 2x on Sundays), it’s just sO funny for me hearing how the Southern Baptist church is kicking out churches with women pastors..???

My paternal and maternal grandmothers were both preachers, and my mom and most of my aunts and and and

I was in my mid to late teens before I even attended a church with a male pastor, and it was so jarring

I was like, “is this even a real church? because I don’t see any women in the pulpit”

They had to convince me that it was for real

This isn’t a post to convince anyone to be pro religion or pro atheist - just me sharing some personal experiences

BUT..!! I will say one thing: nobody on earth can convince me that if churches with women preachers & pastors were more common, you wouldn’t have nearly as much sexual abuse going on

Not that women are incapable of sexual abuse on minors, but I’m sorry, in small Black churches where practically everyone knew each other’s parents and children? Nah

If a grown man was trying to have ANY kind of “relationship” with a young girl (aka, a child), the moms would have had a fish fry with his peen. At the very least, they woulda shamed tf outta him to the point where he wouldn’t have shown his face

(and now that I think about it, that might be precisely why a couple of the older dudes seemingly vanished. at least, I don’t think the women straight up murked them … I don’t think)

The problem that a lot of these Pentecostal churches had was actually the exact opposite: they kept their girls on such strict lockdown that the very first time they “fell in love” with their crush, many of them got pregnant—because they had zero experience with dating and learning how to just BE around boys, unchaperoned

And as far as the women Pentecostal pastors violating young boys? Again, not saying that it couldn’t happen or that it never ever happened, but again just going on my lived experiences, the 10 - 17yr old Black boy who could keep his mouth shut about it was about as common as a unicorn

Ofc we all (the teenage boys) crushed on some of the younger women who were in their 20s and early 30s, and if ANY of us so much as got a kiss, it would have been on the front page of every local newspaper and all over the 11 o’clock evening news. We held those kinds of secrets about as well as a sieve holds water

And finally, I’m not forgetting about LGBTQ people either, at least I don’t think so anyway

One of my siblings is gay, and ofc I had no clue

Not necessarily bc I “missed” anything (although I’m sure I did that too), but because being LGBTQ in a Black church?? (any church, really) was more trouble than it was worth. The threat of becoming an exile in your own community was, unfortunately, very real

Anyway, it’s still funny to me that churches are willing to potentially turn away 50% of members at a time when church membership is shrinking

I would love it if writers and fans stopped treating Sebastian Shaw as a sexist strawman. I think the most ridiculous recent example was Shaw arguing against Curse’s resurrection in X-Men Green, and Kitty accusing him of having problems with powerful women he can’t control, and name-dropping Jean “Fire and life incarnate” like that’s supposed to intimidate Sebastian. Give me a break, are we really girlbossing Curse? I think Sebastian opposes Curse’s resurrection because she went a killing spree that makes her a liability to Krakoa.

It's also…..interesting to me that Sebastian is treated like the epitome of rich white male privilege. I mean, I get it, he is rich and white and male, and he acts like he spends all his free time swimming in the money bin, but he also grew up in poverty. There are plenty of rich characters born into wealth who don’t get this treatment.

I’m assuming this means just fandom related, not real world issues. But if I can veer away from X-Men fandom for a second, I really, really hate the way English-speaking manga fans have picked up the word fujoshi and turned it into “those awful women who fetishize MLM” The original meaning of fujoshi, or “rotten women,” was misogynistic and homophobic male manga fans insulting any woman who was a big fan of anime/manga, and especially women who shipped M/M. Japanese female fans embraced and reclaimed the term as a kind of badge of honor. And now English-speaking, mostly Western fans on Tumblr have snatched up the term, which they don’t fully understand, as a way to differentiate themselves, the “good” M/M fans, from those awful fujoshi, the “bad” M/M fans. I honestly think it’s racist to use the word that way. You don’t get to enjoy Japanese BL/yaoi manga (or ship characters from manga) and also steal a word from Japanese fandom and use it incorrectly to bash on other fans. If you want to talk about female fans fetishizing gay men, that’s a conversation we can have without taking a word out of context from another culture. Personally, I think the main thing that really matters is how people treat actual, real life LGBTQ people.

Aside from those friendly pornbots, the main people I block are random strangers that I see having shitty opinions on threads reblogged by people I follow (the people I follow are generally reblogging a refutation of the shitty opinion). So anyone posting, say, anti-trans stuff gets a block immediately.

I’ve never blocked a mutual or someone that I previously followed, it would take a lot to get me to do that. There was one blog that I had bookmarked and frequently read back before I had a tumblr account, because they mostly posted about a character I like. Their posting got gradually more and more red-pilled – they started posting Jordan Peterson videos, then it was pro-Trump stuff. I don’t know what the hell happened, they had seemed like an intelligent and empathetic person. I never officially followed them on tumblr, but last time I checked their blog, they were whining about SJW. Blocked.

I’m barely on Discord, aside from talking to a couple of IRL friends. I prefer this Discord.

I think it all comes down to the individual fans. Any ship can be annoying if it gets large enough that it sort of dominates fandom, but I still don’t mind if the fans are well-behaved. Ship wars in general annoy me – ship and let ship, as far as I’m concerned. I probably get more annoyed with people who make a big deal about hating a particular ship. I don’t mean just disliking it, or making a few posts venting about the ship or fans being annoying, I totally understand that. I mean constantly posting about how much they hate the ship, like it’s their own personal crusade.

That Pyro and Avalanche have not kissed yet.

That not enough people have written about or drawn Pyro and Avalanche kissing.

Morph from TAS. Look, here’s this upbeat and cheerful mutant (who is also kind of annoying, admittedly), who is “killed” while trying to protect their friend, and then goes through absolute hell being manipulated and tortured and turned against their own team and having to confront their own dark side because they did terrible things, that’s an interesting character right there. And Exiles Morph shows that TAS Morph has a ton of untapped potential in their powers. Not to mention, we know so little about the character and their background, you can project whatever fanon you want onto them. (Slaps roof) This bad boy can fit so many headcanons into them!

While I’m at it, I’ll also give a shout-out to Spyke from Evolution, a cute and likable kid with very cool powers, who also goes through an interesting arc with his powers visibly mutating his body, and he goes underground to live with the Morlocks and becomes their protector (which is nice, given that the X-Men mostly ignore the Morlocks). And unlike Morph, Spyke was actually a main cast member on the show. No offense to X-23, but how is it she got imported into the comics as a major character, despite only appearing in two episodes, and Spyke never really did? (I know the answer – it’s because she’s a Wolverine.)

13. worst blorboficiation

Leah Williams completely re-writing Blob’s personality. Don’t get me wrong, I like a more thoughtful, sensitive Blob, I like chill bartender Blob living his best life on Krakoa, I don’t like a personality change that barely resembles the old character. I like Blob’s big and loud personality, even when he was often an obnoxious jerk, and I think there are ways to write him more sympathetically without completely losing that.

To be honest a lot of Leah Williams writing is just…..a little too Tumblr for me? (Outside of other issues) Like I totally love and appreciate the jokes and memes people make on here, but I can’t stand Jubilee using the phrase “juicy dumper” to describe having a nice ass. Not because Jubilee can’t talk about sex or her body, or be vulgar, she’s a grown adult mother. Just that “juicy dumper” sounds so fucking stupid, even for Jubilee, who is a slang queen. It’s speech that works online, but people shouldn’t actually say it.

14. that one thing you see in fics all the time

If we’re talking about things that annoy me, the obvious influence of TV or movie versions of characters when people are supposedly writing the comics version. Or people tagging all possible adaptations, even though those have wildly different versions of the characters. I don’t mind people being creative and adapting various versions of the characters, I do mind people claiming they’re writing the comics character, and it’s obviously the movie/cartoon version. Or going into a fic not knowing at all which versions of the character I’m going to get. That’s probably my most petty, gate-keeping fandom opinion.

15, that one thing you see in fanart all the time

I really don’t have a problem with most fanart. I do get tired of Madelyne Pryor fanart being all evil-sexy-boobs-out Goblin Queen, but in fairness, that’s how the comics have been depicting her for years. And unless you tag it as Maddy, or put her in her flight suit or Anodyne costume, it’s hard to know it’s her otherwise.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

The Wolverine/Jean/Scott “love triangle,” I’m so tired of it, but Wolverine writers will never let the whole Jean thing go. I think fandom is actually pretty divided on it at this point, but there are plenty of people that still seem to love it, or want some kind of poly thing between them. (I don’t have an issue with a poly relationship in comics, I just have an issue with Jean/Wolverine.) I hate it because it feels forced, because Wolverine has had many partners and it seems like writers just want him to be the cool guy who gets all the women, and because they want some of the conflict between Wolverine and Scott to revolve around Jean, even though it’s already an obvious conflict between team leader and Guy Who Hates Authority. I have never read any kind of attraction on Jean’s part that has convinced me, it just feels like Wolverine either pining for or chasing after a woman who is not interested, and who is already with someone else. I’d much rather see Wolverine/Storm, or Wolverine/Storm/Nightcrawler if people want a poly ship. That’s actually a romance growing naturally out of friendship and mutual respect, not “The cool rebel guy likes The Girl, and therefore he should have her.”

Shinobi Shaw. He’s a hot bad boy with a history of being abused, he’s the son of a prominent villain, he’s bisexual and has an amazing fashion sense (when he’s not in Marauders). He’s a poor little meow meow. He has all the qualities that should make Tumblr latch onto him, but for some reason people haven’t. Maybe because he hasn’t had much to do in the Krakoa era outside of Marauders, and he didn’t really get to do much in Marauders, either.

I’ve been trying to read some of the original X-Men issues, like the stuff from way back in the 60’s, and wow is it a slog. I’m honestly mostly bored with the original five, I like Jean and Bobby, but I think the book gets way more interesting when the Giant Size X-Men show up.

Big comics events, editors please stop making writers interrupt their stories every few months for the latest “event.”

But the recent specific thing is Mr. Sinister. He’s a fun and entertaining character, but he or one of his clones have played SUCH a big role in the Krakoa books, and we just had an entire event about him taking over, and it seems like his story still isn’t over, I’m honestly just tired of him. I’m glad classic Sinister went into the Pit, but there are still three clones running around to fill the void, and they’re not that interesting either. I don’t want Sinister to leave the books entirely, I just want him and his variants to GO AWAY for a little while.

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

Phantazia. Where are you, Eileen?

Also, why has no one put Pyro and Fabian Cortez together as a musical duo when they both can canonically play instruments. (Or at last, Fabian says he can…..)

I can’t think of any ship I actively dislike that I’ve been convinced to like. But I have been introduced to ships that I hadn’t thought about before, like Maximus/Namor, or Gambit/Quicksilver, or Unus/Blob. I was already into Sam/Bucky, but fans have got me liking it even more.

24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse

Things aren’t so bad on Tumblr, but on other social media like Reddit, any time a character in super-hero comics is LGBTQ. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pre-established character coming out, or a completely new character, all the assholes come crawling out of the woodwork to explain why they totally don’t have a problem with gay characters, they just don’t like the way this particular one is written. Every time. There is no winning with these fans. If it’s an established character coming out, then we get “Just make a new character, don’t change an established one!” Even though comics are full of other types of character retcons. Even though creators were restricted in depicting gay characters for decades (and to some extent probably still are), and a lot of meant-to-be-queer characters got straightwashed. Even if it’s a minor recurring character whose sexuality was never previously established. If it’s a completely new character, then they are an example of comics going “woke” and caring more about agendas than storytelling. If the character’s sexuality is not a major part of their storyline, then they’re a token, if it is a major part of their storyline, then the character’s whole personality is about being gay. There is no “right way” to write LGBTQ characters for these fans, because they really just don’t want gay characters in their super-hero comics.

This also applies to just about anytime a character is something other than a straight white dude or a conventionally hot woman. “I just want good storytelling, not forced diversity!” people say about Kamala Khan, a popular and well-written character who has carried her own book with a great supporting cast for years.

Anything negative about the inclusive nature of A03. Use the damn tags, or else go construct your morally pure fandom archive somewhere else.

OMG hello!! I cannot tell you how happy I was to get this ask-

I am. ALWAYS happy to talk about my aus, please feel free to send me ANYTHING at ANY time /gen :D!!!

Greatest Showman AU!!!! Of course!! It has been a long time since I talked about this au, and there's.......different routes for the au if that makes sense.

So to start off, if it isn't clear, most of my aus are made bc of me listening to music or musical songs/film music, and this leads to this sort of thing happening-

I made this au bc I watched the film and said "what if I drew my fav ships as the different songs?"........I still have the sketches for these that I want to finish one day-

It is a mostly Edgejeanist and Ectoloader focused au!!! (with a dash of some others)

(forgive me for my lack of knowledge on terminology and also for completely forgetting everyone's names /lh)

Main AU:

So basically follows the storyline for the most part!

Ectoloader are the married couple bc what kinda au would this be if I didn't make them a married couple /lh

They had the whole Childhood Friends -> Lovers things and do Circus Things together - they own the circus

Ecto did tightrope acts and I haven't figured out pl yet tbh-

Edgeshot is a Trapeze artist.

Jeanist is the guy that gets dragged into the circus by Ecto and they have that lovely Moment(tm)

Mic is the guy who gets the crowd all worked up, Aizawa does trapeze and that ribbon-y stuff- (lord help me i do not know terminology)

Cue romance and Circus Shenanigans between everyone!

Plenty of injury moments and fantastic performing stuff!

Shinya and Tsunagu get to have their 'Rewrite the Stars' Moment!

Ecto goes away to tour with Snipe! (nothing like the musical, just goin on a lil fun trip with a friend)!! Circus goes to shit!

FIRE SCENE!!!

Jeanist runs in to save Shinya, who was already out, who now runs in to save him- Tsunagu is very hurt.

Ecto loses his legs in the accident (suggested by an anon a while back and i really loved it)

Mic gets stuck, Aizawa rescues him!

Angst and Comfort ensue!!!

Not a lot of thought apart from "this is fun to imagine the characters playing as.....the characters..from the musical..."

So the song 'The Other Side' just went perfectly imagining Ecto convincing Jeans to join him while Nighteye tended to the bar......idk its so fun to imagine in time to the music-

How dare you merge two hyperfixations into the perfect inbox bait that cannot be ignored. Shame on you. ALRIGHT LET'S DO IT.

In this universe everybody uses fountain pens because why the heck not.

I think I covered a couple of these before, but let's ignore all of that and start anew(ish). We'll take it one at a time because it's a LOT.

spoiler alert I got tired and didn't include a bunch I had thought of so welp

Lena Luthor: Pelikan Souverän Anthracite

We've been over this one, even if I've gone back and forth on several pens for Lena, but this is always one of my favourites. This is the perfect CEO-style pen to wag over Clark Kent's face when he brings up the 'Ah, but it's not, it's Luthor' thing. Perfect placeholder for the blue pen she inevitably gets later for. Reasons.

Kara Danvers: Karas Kustoms

Listen, just the perfect name aside (yes, this is a real brand!), I feel like Kara would need something sturdy, nigh indestructible, for the obvious reasons. Maybe the DEO could arrange for one of these made of N metal or whatever that's called.

Alex Danvers: Pilot Vanishing Point (matte black)

Alex doesn't have time for your shit, my shit, or anyone's shit because she's got too much shit going on with a superhero sister, a dubious government organization, aliens, and being a big ol' gay. She does not have time for this capping and uncapping nonsense, so she gets a clicky fountain pen for optimum efficiency. Additionally, I like to think that Alex, like me, would also click this thing incessantly because who needs therapy when you have a clicky pen?!

J'onn J'onnz: Diplomat Elox Green/Black

OK, I have no backstory for this one. This pen just looked COOL. I feel like it fits both DEO J'onn and the Martian Manhunter. Though I guess when he becomes a private eye he switches to something more understated, like a Schon DSGN Black Ultem.

Nia Nal: Pilot Metropolitan (Retro Pop)

These are just fun. Nia's fun. That's pretty much my rationale for it. I also think she'd have a whole bunch of them (since they're excellent but inexpensive!) to collect all colours (and because she keeps misplacing them). At first I thought Nia would collect all the Lamy Safari colours, but these seemed to suit her better. At some point Lena gifts her a Sailor Pro Gear special edition (something colorful, naturally!)

Brainy: Lamy 2000 (stainless Steel)

Brainy will never admit he likes fountain pens (he keeps saying he's far too advanced for such a primitive thing) but he falls in love with the modern/futuristic design of the Lamy 2000 and has to sheepishly ask Nia to recommend some cool inks to go with it.

She gives him bright pink and they both love it. All DEO memos are pink thereafter.

Kelly Olsen: Sailor Pro Gear (Green)

I kept going back and forth over several options, but finally landed on this pen because I get the feeling Kelly would take a ton of notes professionally, so she would need a) a professional pen and b) a comfortable nib. She'd be very methodical with her note-taking and Alex would drive her bonkers with her incessant clicking with the Pilot!

Not a request, but I'm just so excited so I wanna share. And it kinda sorta pertains to you so!!

After a few years since the big mspec lesbian/gay discourse kicked up I've finally been able to accept myself and come out as an mspec gay!! It wasn't easy, I had to reevaluate a lot of my former friendships, I lost a few of them, and I lived in a lot of fear that if I were to come out I'd be sent death threats or something, but I've been out for a few days and my friends and followers have been nothing but supportive!!! It's so nice, I was so afraid I'd get hate for it, that I'd lose more friends, but I haven't and I'm so happy!!

Anyways, I've been following you for a couple years now, but I've always kept my interactions with you limited and private because I feared that if my followers saw me interacting with a pro-mspec lesbian/gay blog, I'd get hate, and my extension you would too. I've requested a few boards from you that I've been too afraid to reblog because of this.

But now that there's been zero hate towards me, I feel I'm no longer walking on eggshells!! I feel like I can finally, fully interact with your work without feeling like I'm hiding something, or that I'm gonna get "found out."

Anyways, again sorry ik this isn't a request or anything, but I wanted to share.

i can relate to a lot of this, actually. when i first came out as bi gay to my friend most of them cut contact with me, which hurt. like a lot. but since then i've been able to surround myself with people who love and support me no matter what, and it's given me the confidence to be Open about being mspec gay and supporting ppl like myself!

Beginners (2010)

Written and directed by Mike Mills, this semi-autobiographical film is mainly focused on the relationship between a man named Oliver Fields and his aging father Hal Fields, who came out of the closet in his seventies.

Ewan McGregor plays Oliver while Christopher Plummer plays Hal. Other stars include Mélanie Laurent as Oliver’s love interest Anna and a Jack Russell Terrier dog that was once owned by Hal named Arthur.

Ewan McGregor manages to carry the movie with solid acting, even when his character is emotionally troubled at times. Christopher Plummer is the jewel on the crown as he delivers fresh dignity to an honest, ecstatic soul who shows no sign of self-pity. What’s more, the role won Christopher Plummer an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Mélanie Laurent plays a vagabond whose relationship with her father is more complicated than Oliver’s. The canine actor (whose real name is Cosmo) even proves to be quite the adorable scene-stealer who’s got subtitled communication on the screen so viewers can actually know what he’s thinking.

The film is partly based on director Mike Mills’ personal experience as his father was gay the whole time he was married, but kept his sexuality hidden until after his wife died. He then decided to enter a new phase as a homosexual. Although the revelation came as a surprise to Oliver, he tries to re-evaluate as he already sensed there was some distance between his parents. Five years into the gay community, Hal becomes romantically involved with a much younger man, only to be diagnosed with terminal cancer. Since his father wasn’t around much during childhood, Oliver tries to form a closer bond with him before he dies. Hal on the other hand doesn’t acknowledge the symptoms as he is overjoyed to live a carefree lifestyle at a convenient time.

Through a series of flashbacks, the film takes place in 2003, coupled with multi-generational images of the 20th century. Every overlapping scene depicts the growing changes of society. For example, homosexuality was originally considered a mental illness to the point where people might lose everything dear to them if sexual orientation of the same gender was found out. As such, Hal was able to open his heart to Oliver’s mother as they were old friends on friendly (but complex) terms.

What’s touching about the story is it gives the impression of looking at yourself in the mirror as you figure out how to move on from a tragic loss. Oliver is first seen in a sullen mood following several failed relationships. At the same time, his father’s happiness inspires him to pursue a new relationship.

The film puts comedy and drama together in a unique way to demonstrate the pros and cons of love. As Oliver and Anna’s intimate friendship blooms into romance, personal issues of self-doubt soon begin to prevent them from committing to one another. During those setbacks, Oliver would keep himself busy as a graphic designer while Anna (an actress) checks herself in empty hotel rooms with her earnings.

The soundtrack contains classical music and vintage songs within a modern timeline to reflect the ancient history of the 20th century. Some of those songs include: “Stardust” by Hoagy Carmichael and “Everything’s Made for Love” by Gene Austin.

Finally, the true significance of the movie is even though new beginnings can be life-changing, it’s never too late to achieve what your heart longs for. With all that said, I deeply recommend this poignant cinematic love story to everyone.
