You know, while everyone thinks about how Mickey became PD this year, not enough folks think about how the remaining Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons they made under Walt also became PD.
Which is a shame, because they're pretty good!

My brothers in Christ, Bruce doesn't just fight crime by night.
Bruce runs a program through the WE (partnered with Gotham PD of course) that helps criminals get back on their feet. If a person is arrested for robbery, fighting, or henching (which has become it's own crime), their case is evaluated personally by Bruce and Jim Gordon. They have to meet some criteria of course. (Like, they couldn't have permanently or greviously injured anyone. They have to make less thant $110 k or have some other monetary issues) But, if they meet the criteria, they qualify for the program.
Through this program, they get hired by WE (which has full healthcare) and are taught transferable skills so they can leave Gotham if they want. WE pays great and everyone has heard great things about the work environment. Their charges are dropped, provided the victim agrees, and they have to complete community service (although they are given some time to get back on their feet so they don't lose working hours).
Each member of the program has to go to weekly therapy for up to a year and rehab if they have drug abuse issues (both full covered by Wayne healthcare, of course).
This program has reduced crime since it's started to the point that some big time criminals and crime lords are running out of henchmen.

Public Domain cartoon characters from the Golden Age of Animation (and beyond)
Revised and expanded version of this post: https://tymime.tumblr.com/post/648495121557585920/instead-of-whining-about-mickey-mouse-not-falling
While Mickey entering the public domain is exciting and all, I do think a lot of people are overlooking the many other animated characters that are available to use in their creative works. This list isn't entirely exhaustive, but it does highlight some of the most interesting and/or appealing characters, as well as ones that have the potential to be so.
Koko the Clown
Tumblr media
One of the oldest cartoon stars from the Fleischer studio, almost all of Koko's silent-era cartoons are PD, and have been for quite some time. A handful of his appearances alongside Betty Boop are also PD.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
Tumblr media
Oswald's PD status has been greatly overshadowed by his fellow Disney star Mickey, but I believe that he deserves more recognition. All of the shorts produced by the Disney studio are PD as of this year, and let's face it, those are the only ones most people care about. Pegleg Pete's bear design is also PD.
Keep in mind that the blue shorts that Oswald wears in Epic Mickey and elsewhere are likely copyrighted, so I recommend steering clear of that.
I'm also not entirely sure you can use the name "Ortensia" for his cat girlfriend, since that name first appeared in Epic Mickey also. She was called "Kitty" back in the day, among other things.
All of Van Beuren Studio's cartoons
Tumblr media
The Van Beuren Studio was active during the rubberhose era, and their cartoons, especially the earlier ones, are like a cruder, possibly even more bizarre cousin to Fleischer and Disney. They went bust in the late 1930s, and no one renewed the copyright later on, so the entirety of their output is PD.
Tumblr media
Their most notable characters include Tom and Jerry, a pair of average Joes who always get into strange adventures. They shouldn't be confused with MGM's Tom and Jerry, and in fact they were called Dick and Larry when their shorts were rereleased for the home-movie market in the 1940s.
Tumblr media
Also notable is Waffles and Don, who are basically just animal versions of Tom and Jerry. You might consider these two as a better alternative, just to avoid confusion.
Tumblr media
There's also Cubby Bear, a pretty blatant Mickey Mouse clone, but unique enough that I don't think anybody’s going to confuse the two nowadays.
In the previous post, I mentioned a rumor that Disney threatened legal action over the character, but I can't find the source for that now. I may have been thinking of Milton Mouse, who was so extremely similar to Mickey that they actually did sue the studo for copyright infringement. So maybe don't try selling any Milton merchandise...
Tumblr media
Finally, there's Molly Moo-Cow, who appeared in several Rainbow Parade cartoons in the mid-to-late 1930s. Molly is arguably not the most interesting character, but I have a fondness for her since we grew up with one of her shorts on a VHS tape.
Toby the Pup
Tumblr media
Another very obscure character, about half of his cartoons are lost media. The little that does survive is hard to find online, but I think his design has appeal.
Dr. XXX
Tumblr media
Disney's The Mad Doctor was never renewed for reasons unknown, though some speculate that the studio thought that the cartoon was too scary and decided to let it go. Fortunately for us, that means that this iconic character is now in the people's hands.
Goopy Geer
Tumblr media
Goopy appeared in the three Merrie Melodies cartoons alongside his unnamed girlfriend. Despite his name and appearance being similar to Disney's Goofy, he actually made his debut about a month before (Goofy was named Dippy Dawg at the time anyway, so it was undoubtedly a coincidence).
Claude Hopper
Tumblr media
Claude appeared in a single Looney Tunes cartoon in 1943 called Hop and Go, alongside a pair of Scottish rabbits who antagonize him. The cartoon ends with a very unfortunate depiction of Tokyo being blown up (World War II was still going on at the time), so it's no surprise that Warner Bros. decided not to renew this one. Despite that, he has a very appealing design (imo), so I think he has potential. (Also, he's voiced by Pinto Colvig, the original voice of Goofy!)
Private Snafu and Mr. Hook
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Snafu and Hook were created for the US government, so according to the law are automatically public domain. The shorts were made to be shown to members of the US army and navy respectively, in order to teach them valuable lessons for fighting in WWII, but are nevertheless hilarious cartoons- animated by the Looney Tunes team with scripts by Ted Geisel- aka Dr. Seuss!
The Dover Boys
Tumblr media
Also of note are the ComiColor cartoons from the Iwerks studio, Rainbow Parade from Van Beuren, and most of the Color Classics by Fleischer. These don't have any especially memorable characters in them, but I thought I ought to mention them.
Yes, Tom, Dick and Larry, Dora Standpipe and the villainous Dan Backslide are all public domain. A bunch of YouTube Poops were created after this fact was discovered by the internet a few years ago.
How Warner Bros. could ever let this one get away I'll never know. Their loss is our gain, I suppose.
Caveats and other concerns
Krazy Kat
Tumblr media
Felix the Cat
All of the strips up to 1928 are definitely fair game. According to the Public Domain Superheroes wiki however, the entirety of the strip's run is PD. I'm not sure if it that's true, but the Fantagraphics collections don't credit any newspaper syndicate, so it seems likely. (Apparently the copyright status of newspaper comics are a whole can of worms on its own...)
At any rate, the strip's cast was pretty well set in stone by 1928, so it shouldn't be much of a problem. A large number of animated shorts starring Krazy are also PD, but those were pretty much in name only.
Tumblr media
Flip the Frog
Felix was pretty much the first cartoon superstar, and almost all of his Golden Age appearances are PD now. Keep in mind that this does not include elements from the 1950s cartoon like his magic bag, or from The Twisted Tales of Felix, as amazing as that series is.
The character's name and appeance are still trademarked by NBC Universal however, so you might be able to use him in a minor role, but not much else.
Tumblr media
I'm uncertain about this one. According to most sources Flip is PD, but according to the Thunderbean Blu-ray collection he's copyrighted by the Film Preservation Archives, whatever that means. Additionally, Flip himself is supposedly trademarked by Leslie Iwerks, Ub Iwerks’ granddaughter, though no one seems to be able to confirm that. I don't know how the trademark hasn't lapsed yet, considering that Flip hasn't appeared on any official merchandise or anything in decades.
Bosko and Honey
Tumblr media
I believe there's nothing stopping anyone from using Bosko's classic design (later appearances at MGM and in Tiny Toons are still copyrighted), but the character himself is a bit problematic, considering that it's all but stated outright that he's a blackface caricature. Use with caution.
Foxy and Roxy
Tumblr media
Noveltoons
Like Goopy Geer, Foxy appeared in three Merrie Melodies cartoons. Roxy's name originates from an episode of Tiny Toon Adventures however, so keep that in mind. Though I'm not sure what else you would call her (or if Warner Bros. would even care). Supposedly her original name was "Fluffy", but I can't find a source for this.
Like Bosko and Honey, later appearances in Tiny Toons are still copyrighted.
Tumblr media
Noveltoons was a series produced by Famous Studios, the successor to the Fleischer studio. The characters include Baby Huey, Herman the mouse, Blackie the sheep, Little Audrey, and of course, Casper the Friendly Ghost. Only a small handful of the shorts are PD though, and Casper is trademarked, so one's options are limited.
Ginger Nutt (and rest of the Animaland cast)
Tumblr media
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
This one I'm not entirely sure about either, but Ginger Nutt's Christmas Circus has long been a staple of grey-market tapes and DVDs, so I'm just going to assume all of the Animaland cartoons are also PD. Considering that the series wasn't very sucessful, and is very obscure nowadays, it seems pretty likely.
If anyone has any insight on this, let me know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calvin and the Colonel
Now here's an interesting case. An all-time classic Christmas special, and yet large parts of it are PD because they accidentally put the wrong date on the copyright notice. Instead of the Roman numerals MCMLXIV (1964), it reads MCLXIV (1164), and according to the law at the time, that meant that the film immediately went into public domain.
Of course, Rudolph himself is still copyrighted, and will be until 2035 when the original book falls into the public domain. Even then he's likely to still be trademarked. Not to mention the songs featured in the '64 film will be copyrighted for a long time afterward.
Still, this means that anyone is free to use all the other characters, including Hermey, Yukon Cornelius, King Moonracer, Clarice, and all the Misfit Toys. It's a wonder no one seems to have taken advantage of this. And of course Santa and his reindeer have been PD for ages, especially Santa since he comes from folklore- and you can't copyright folklore.
Tumblr media
This cartoon is based on and stars a lot of the same voice cast as the old-time radio show Amos and Andy, which, while not overtly racist, featured white actors pretending to be black. The cartoon obviously has animals instead, but still, tread carefully. Someone is bound to point out the characters' history.
Hoppity Hooper
Tumblr media
Another one I'm not sure about. The Public Domain Superheroes wiki has characters from this show among its articles, but I wasn't able to confirm if it really was PD. It was created by Jay Ward, the same studio who made Rocky & Bullwinkle and George of the Jungle, but was also a huge flop for some reason, so that may be the reason why they let the copyright expire. Again, I'm not sure, but no one seems to care that the entire series is on YouTube, so who knows?
...Well, there you have it. Lots of obscure and forgotten toons waiting to be rediscovered and reused! If anyone has any more info or corrections, leave me a comment. I'd love some clarification on some of these.

Public Domain Kingdom Hearts Idea
One idea of mine to use Public Domain (PD) properties (Mickey/Steamboat Willie for instance) is basically Kingdom Hearts, only PD. Characters such as Gertie the dinosaur, Felix the Cat, etc. (and not only limited to the PD cartoons). Going to places like The 100 Acre Wood, Wonderland, Neverland, Oz, Maple White Land, etc.
The working title for the idea is “Sailing Hearts”, as a play on Kingdom Hearts obviously, with also referring to their means of going to the different places being the Steamboat Willie.
Story would follow, Alice, of the Alice Comedies, with Mickey and Oswald (and/or Popeye too cause he goes PD next year) going about trying to stop The Corruption (corruption idea by @guthrie-odonto) from assimilating the other worlds to feed off them.
That’s about all that idea has developed so far w/ this merely being one way I’d go about it w/ using the PD mouse.

WELCOME TO MY BLOG
(formerly know as fvrstxrrsponse)
This is a multi-muse/multi-fandom roleplaying blog featuring some of my favorite characters to write from different shows I like to watch.
Not all muses may be active. It never hurts to ask which muses are active.
Asks and Memes are always accepted.
Let's keep the drama to a minimum. We're here for entertainment but I won't entertain the nonsense.
A few things about me:
I am a mom so my free time is limited.

However I'm always down to chat OOC with anyone if you just wanna talk. I'm totally cool with that.
Replies will be drafted and sent out accordingly. DO NOT SPAM ME WITH MESSAGES. I can do a shitty job of keeping track sometimes but I will get to it when I can. Sometimes they get lost because of Tumblr or because of the amount of threads currently going. Please have patience.

Oswald Cobblepot (Gotham) is disabled and uses a cane with a penguin-head shaped handle ^_^
yess more dc >:3
(doing comics in general instead of live action or movies if i can help it. never watched gotham but love penguin overall)

image one: [id: a dark grey flag with a dusty rainbow going from the bottom left corner up to the right, dark grey circles on top one in the middle of the other and oswald cobblepot from dc in the middle of the image sitting with his head turned up, cigar in his mouth and umbrella held in front of him. :end id]
image two: [id: a flag with a grey border around 7 vertical stripes ranging from left to right as light blue, blue, dusty blue, purple-blue, grey, dusty purple and dark periwinkle. on top of the flag is oswald cobblepot from dc in the middle of the image sitting with his head turned up, cigar in his mouth and umbrella held in front of him. :end id]
Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin is crippled, supports cripplepunk and uses a cane!
for a bit of clarification, hes very often seen with an umbrella more than anything using the umbrella as a cane and often times the end of the umbrella is a penguin head-shaped handle similar to marry poppins parrot umbrella handle. i am counting this as a cane as some umbrellas can and do double as canes.
Tumblr media
image three: [id: a banner with a blue to green gradient and water-filtering-light texture under a faintly transparent blue rectangular box. in the box is light blue text that reads "Blog is about disability, disabled characters and headcanons. may include occasional pd rep but otherwise do not derail. blocking where i see fir for my comfort, please remain respectful." on the top of the banner outside the blue box is more light blue text that reads "DNI if proship, terf, are a discourse blog and other basic dni stuff" in all caps. under the blue box at the bottom of the banner is more light blue text that reads "cripplepunk is for the physically disabled only" in all caps. on either side of the banner is an image of ryn from the show siren staring off to the side. :end id]

Welcome to my Blog
My name is Heather. I'm in my 30's. I am currently on a first responders and police procedurals kick. Throw in zombie shows and you've got me down to a T. So here is a little bit about me.
I work overnights at a convenience store 10pm to 6am Thursday thru Sunday so activity will be low on the weekends because I'm usually dead tired and up to my eyeballs in things to do for myself and my family.
I tend to have bad bouts of depression that affects my activity online also.
I always give everyone a fair chance to write.
I don't like being spammed with messages. I can see the messages and replies. It gets a little annoying. I will answer when I can.
If you don't like one of the characters I play then please do not interact with my blog.
I'm working on not being so shy and intimidated by writers better than myself.
I tend to get bored easily if I'm not fully invested in the thread. I won't lie. And it will likely be obvious in the length of my replies.

Jenna’s characters - in literature
I didn’t set out to create a “trilogy” of “what’s available” posts for Jenna Coleman, but after covering DVD/Blu-ray and audio releases, with her latest TV series, The Sandman, itself being based on graphic literature, I thought I’d finish the trifecta and go through where you might be able to find Jenna’s characters in literature. (This list may not be complete, so feel free to suggest additions!)
Captain America: The First Avenger: I have yet to see an “adult” novelization of the film, but a junior novelization and a comic adaptation do exist, though whether any feature Jenna’s small role as Connie, I cannot say. There is also an illustrated screenplay for the film, which not only transcribes her dialogue, but it also reveals that Connie/Jenna’s second appearance in the film - as a nurse after Cap saves Bucky and company from HYDRA - was not scripted to be Connie!
Room at the Top: Based upon the John Braine novel from the 1950s. Jenna’s character, Susan, also appears in its sequel, Life at the Top.
Dancing on the Edge: Stephen Poliakoff’s teleplay for the miniseries has been published, but you might need to order one from the UK.
Doctor Who: I’m not going to list all the novels and short stories with Clara Oswald. The TARDIS Data Core wiki has a pretty good list of Clara’s appearances in all media, though novelizations have, so far, been published of the TV stories Day of the Doctor, Crimson Horror and Twice Upon a Time.
Death Comes to Pemberley was an adaptation of PD James’ mystery novel which was a sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Of course you can seek that novel out too to read more of Jenna’s character, Lydia. And Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as well, of course...
Victoria: Daisy Goodwin, the show’s creator and head writer, published a novelization of the first half of Series 1 (basically the Lord M arc) as Victoria. She reportedly also used historian A.N. Wilson’s Victoria: A Life as one of her key references.
Me Before You adapted the novel by Jojo Moyes, which was the first in a series of books. Jenna’s character, Katrina, appears in several of them.
The Cry was based on the novel by Helen FitzGerald.
All My Sons by Arthur Miller was, of course originally a play, but it’s been widely published.
The Sandman: Series 1 will adapt two story arcs originally published as comic books and later compiled into graphic novels: Preludes & Nocturnes (a.k.a. Volume 1) and The Doll’s House (Volume 2). Jenna’s character, Johanna Constantine, replaces John Constantine from the comic books, but how much a role she plays in the TV series and how closely it adapts the comic remains to be seen.
I always find it interesting to read the literary versions of characters because they often differ quite bit from on-screen versions. For example, Katrina from Me Before You is quite a bit more foul-mouthed than the version Jenna played. And The Cry is quite a bit more explicit than the TV version. The Victoria novel has a few sections that would have been eye-raising if depicted on TV (like a bit about how Lord M addresses his attraction to the young queen, a sequence decidedly not in the PG-rated show). And of course those of us who parlay with Whouffle and Whouffaldi have been scouring literary appearances by Clara Oswald for years for any clue (sometimes successfully - novel writers Jenny Colgan and James Goss seem to “get it”).

Jack Ruby: The Many Faces of Oswald’s Assassin
When Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby walked into the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters and shot down Lee Harvey Oswald — the accused killer of John F. Kennedy — he became the pudgy-faced progenitor of an entire industry of conspiracy theories.
youtube
In fact, as Danny Fingeroth points out in his new book, those two killings during the fateful month of November 1963 signaled “ … the start, or at least acceleration, of the age of conspiracy obsession.”
There’s truth to this remark: the suspects accused of JFK’s murder range from the mob to Fidel Castro, from the Russians to Lyndon Johnson.
And, forty years later, most Americans refuse to believe that either Oswald or Jack Ruby acted alone.
To his credit, Fingeroth avoids going down most of these well-plumbed rabbit holes.
Helpfully (and a bit wearily), he even points out that the 1976 Select Committee on Assassinations, which was created to go back over evidence already investigated by the 1964 Warren Commission, was ultimately unable to substantiate the claim that more than one person was involved.
Tumblr media
What really interests Fingeroth is Ruby himself.
Born Jacob Rubenstein in Chicago, Ruby eventually relocated to Dallas.
It was there — as a not particularly successful nightclub impresario, “a perennial small-timer looking for validation from everyone with whom he came into contact” — that he moved in a Runyonesque world of rounders, strippers, vice cops, and shtarkers.
Indeed, it was Ruby’s milieu that supercharged theories about him — theories holding either that Ruby was a mob enforcer assigned to take out Oswald before he could squeal, or that the Dallas PD knew what he was up to and deliberately let him get close to his victim.
Tumblr media
Sure, Ruby probably mixed with mobsters.
Tumblr media
Who didn’t in his world?
Tumblr media
And he spent so much time ingratiating himself with Dallas cops, who could destroy a man like Ruby with a single liquor-license violation, that they likely assumed that he was just another rubbernecker when he showed up at the Headquarters that morning.
It turns out that one of Jack Ruby’s motivators may have been his Judaism.
Tumblr media
A paid-up member of Shearith Israel — a venerable Conservative congregation in Dallas — Ruby was, if not an especially devout Jew, then one for whom community was central.
Like so many Americans, Ruby loved JFK.
But he particularly admired him “ … for prospering despite prejudice against Catholics, which he saw as not unlike the prejudice Jews faced.”
Although JFK’s “Ask not what your country can do for you” inaugural speech gave many Americans a sense of hopefulness, the John Birch Society and other far-right extremist groups were exerting real influence on Civil Rights – era American politics. In the days leading up to the president’s visit to Dallas, a city “where many virulently hated Kennedy,” Ruby was profoundly disturbed by the messaging that started to proliferate.
A mock “wanted for treason” flyer circulated, accusing Kennedy of improbable political and personal crimes.
A full-page ad in the Dallas Morning News characterized the president as an incompetent Soviet dupe.
Because the ad was signed “Bernard Weissman,” Ruby speculated that it had been placed by “Jew hating” provocateurs.
After his arrest, and during his subsequent homicide trial, Ruby’s already quirky personality started to transform into something much darker. His profound sense of Jewish identity deteriorated into paranoid delusions.
“There is going to be the greatest purge against the Jews of America in all history,” he told Rabbi Hillel Silverman of Congregation Shearith Israel, who stood by him throughout his trial. “ … it is a plot … you are next on the list.”
Tumblr media
According to Rabbi Silverman, Ruby’s sense of remorse stemmed not from killing Oswald, but rather from being a shanda, for bringing shame upon the Jewish community and unleashing (largely imagined) antisemitic backlash.
While it broke him entirely, his defense lawyer, the great Melvin Belli, couldn’t quite get him off on an insanity plea.
Ruby was never able to explain why he killed Oswald — at least not in a coherent fashion.
He may not be a likable character in this book, but there is something compelling and strangely sympathetic about him.
As Fingeroth says, Ruby was in many ways “the classic shlimazel … a guy who could have been my weird cousin — or yours.”

Author Danny Fingeroth - Jack Ruby: The Many Faces of Oswald's Assassin
Almost exactly 60 years following the assassination of President John F Kennedy, we bring you a new biography about Jack Ruby, the mysterious businessman to took it upon himself to end the life of Kennedy's assailant, Lee Harvey Oswald.
"As we approach the sixtieth anniversaries of the murders of Kennedy and Oswald, Jack Ruby’s motives are as maddeningly ambiguous today as they were the day that he pulled the trigger…
The fascinating yet frustrating thing about Ruby is that there is evidence to paint him as at least two different people…
Cultural historian Danny Fingeroth's research includes a new, in-depth interview with Rabbi Hillel Silverman, the legendary Dallas clergyman who visited Ruby regularly in prison and who was witness to Ruby’s descent into madness.
Fingeroth also conducted interviews with Ruby family members and associates. The book’s findings will catapult you into a trip through a house of historical mirrors.
“As a conspiracy buff, I leapt into Danny Fingeroth’s Jack Ruby with gusto, only to realize how little I actually knew about Jacob Rubenstein aka Jack Ruby.
Nightclub owner? Yes.
Landsman? Proudly.
Mobster? Maybe.
Insane? You have to read the book.
Fingeroth takes you beat by beat through that fateful weekend and Ruby’s array of co-stars: strippers, club owners, policemen.
He paints a disturbing portrait of a manic Ruby desperate to be in the center of the action, who just wanted to be important.” —David Mandel, TV writer/producer/director (Veep, White House Plumbers)
“Sixty years after the events that changed the world comes this important biography, a gripping, deeply researched investigation into a crucial thread of pivotal history.
Danny Fingeroth digs into a neglected figure with precision and flair.”
—Lisa Napoli, author of Up All Night: Ted Turner, CNN, and the Birth of 24-Hour News
“It’s likely that no book will ever answer whether Jack Ruby was a lone gunman or part of some vast conspiracy.
But cultural sleuth Danny Fingeroth’s fascinating biography offers something more revealing—showing us how this irony-laden icon offers a lens into America’s low-level underworld, its multi-tiered Jewish community, and a Baby-Boom generation robbed of its hero-worshiped president.” —Larry Tye, author of Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon and Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy
“Danny Fingeroth’s book does what few books on the JFK assassinations have even attempted by painting a humanized depiction of the many complex layers of Jack Ruby, the killer of the one of the most notorious presidential suspected assassins.” –Mark S. Zaid, Esq., JFK Assassination Historian

Moving on up. Feeling that she isn’t cut out for the Fifth Avenue Council, Zoey nominates Ethan to replace her. Something which Findlay and Sidney wholeheartedly endorse and Jacob and Deucalion wholeheartedly oppose.

The time travellers boyfriend. Season finale. Part two. With 48 hours to go until Odessa’s disappearance, the team works desperately to find a solution to a problem that cannot be easily solved.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF HOWARD BRENNAN
JFK Assassination witness Howard Brennan is the mostly like source of the description of the shooter that was sent to the Dallas PD fifteen minutes after the assassination that resulted in Oswald’s arrest by 1:50pm.
Howard, a 44-year-old steamfitter (whatever that is), was seated on the short concrete wall on Elm Street directly opposite the shooter’s window at the corner of Elm and Houston when he observed a man on the east end of the sixth floor, presumably waiting for the presidential motorcade.
“He was a white man in his early 30’s, slender, nice looking, slender and would weight about 165 to 175 pounds. He had on light colored clothing but definitely not a suit.” “Possibly 5-foot 10”
Howard’s description of Oswald was remarkably accurate for a casual observation from 100 feet away (Oswald’s high forehead could account for “early 30’s” impression). On the other hand, Howard’s estimate that he was 90 yards (180 ft) from the window is double the actual distance.
His estimate of Oswald’s height is curious because the sills on the sixth floor are very low, perhaps sixteen inches from the floor – this, plus the angle of view, would distort and exaggerate Oswald’s height from Howard’s position (assuming there was no glare on the windows, which is a big assumption).
The Brennan case is further complicated by the fact that he declined to identify Oswald at a police lineup that afternoon, later citing that he feared for his life due to the possibility of communist conspiracy.
This is one of the many paradoxes that contributes to the suspicion that there was a conspiracy operating in Dallas that day, with or without LHO.
