Just another day of helping my Potions Professor check the written assignments. He really should think of changing where he sits at this table. How can he see what he's writing when he casts such a shadow! Windows exist for a reason! Alright, alright. How do I bring it up softly, without it sounding like I'm telling him what to do? I have to plant the idea in his head...

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾  TERMINOLOGY GUIDE :: for the muggles, explained and simplified by yours truly
Tumblr media
Muggle - someone who isn’t able to use magic / non-wizard
Lumos - spell that makes the tip of a wizard’s wand light up
Quidditch - a game for wizards that involves flying on brooms and shooting balls through hoops, basically basketball but more complex because there are three hoops and someone’s trying to catch an ‘i-am-speed’ ball that dictates the fate of the game in the end
Sectumsempra - a spell that lacerates the opponent
Wizarding War - the war between Voldemort’s side and Harry’s
Dark Mark - Voldermort’s mark
Nox - counter spell to Lumos that switches the wand’s light off

You tried your best to peer your eyes open when you heard the front door slam shut. You groaned, infuriated at how such simple tasks like breathing and opening your eyes required extra effort whenever you were sick. But getting sick was merely a consequence of your own actions, so you really didn’t have anyone else to blame but yourself.
You managed to open one eye, fighting back the heavy eyelid that threatened to shut and you searched the room for other movements besides your own.
“It’s 2AM, go back to sleep,” a voice said. Soon, it’s owner emerged from the shadows of the doorway.
Dressed in his all-black work uniform was San. His whole figure blended into the background too well that it almost seemed like he’d apparated back to your place. But with the faint sound of his footfalls, you concluded that he used the muggle way in.
You turned your head. You considered turning your whole body but everything felt sore and heavy. Plus, you were content with the way the comforter was wrapped around you—which was rare, even on better days. You watched San pass by the living room before heading to the kitchen. Though you couldn’t see him from the living room couch, you could see the shadow casted on the floorboards by the kitchen light he switched on. It danced as he moved around, probably to get a late night snack before heading to bed. You could hear him uttering hushed incantations followed by the faint clattering of kitchen metals.
“I’m glad you didn’t burn the house down while I was gone,” he said from the kitchen.
A smile crept up to your lips at his statement. You opened your mouth to utter a small thank you but you could only manage a whisper. You weren’t even sure if he even heard it from that far.
Moments later, he reappeared by the kitchen doorway. “But you were cutting it a bit too close though,” he continued, clutching a frying pan in his right hand.
The pan—originally gray—was now blackened from the mishap earlier. You had fallen asleep in the middle of cooking your own dinner, only waking up to the smell of burnt meat. The scent had been that thick that it managed to seep through your clogged nostrils. It was that bad. You ended up ordering take out instead. You forgot that you didn’t clean up the evidence.
A croaky laugh escaped your lips as you recalled the accident. San only shook his head, disappearing back into the kitchen to put the pan back to the sink. When he came back, he had two cups in hand. He walked over to set both down on their respective coasters on the glass center table of your living room. When he reached over to turn the lights on you stopped him.
“Don’t turn the lights on,” you said, your voice barely audible but he hears it, stopping before the lamp fully on. “They’re too bright. It’ll give me another headache.”
You see his silhouette nod. You could hear him flipping his coat around, shuffling to find something. You didn’t know what he was searching for exactly and you opted to ask him. But you soon find out what it was when you hear him whisper.
“Lumos.”
Where San stood, an orb of light began to glow. You soon realized that the light came from the tip of a stick. He was holding the fir wand in his hand, controlling its brightness until it was just right. Soon, it illuminated the room with a faint light—bright enough for you to see outlines of the room and the furniture scattered but not bright enough to make your eyes water like the lamps did.
He walked over to where you were before leaving his hand outstretched. “Sit up to drink your leaf water,” he said, earning a chuckle from you.
“Leaf water,” you repeated in a hoarse voice before taking his hand in yours, clutching it as you helped yourself up. You crossed your legs, tucking each foot beneath the opposite leg in order to give room on the couch for San to sit.
He handed you your cup of tea before he sat adjacent to you with his own cup in one hand and his wand in the other. Your eyes lingered on the wooden stick he gripped in his hand and on the fingers he had wrapped around it. All his rings were silver, representing the complementing color of his house, Slytherin. Or that was what you remembered of him back when you were still studying at Hogwarts.
You recalled when you used to watch him play Quidditch. He always kissed his rings first before putting on his gloves. He was deemed one of the more valuable players next to their seeker and you were just another student from another house. It wasn’t until your last school year at Hogwarts when you first interacted. The first time you both went beyond the occasional glances you shared whenever you were both in the same class.
Though your first time meeting wasn’t the best setting for the start of something new.
You were tending to one injury after another, working with the school nurse to cater every student who ran to the infirmary for aid or additional support in the form of potions. San had walked in alone and upon catching sight of his green sigil, your first instinct was to cast a spell to disarm him. But he didn’t have his wand raised, nor did he show any indications that he was about to attack. Your guard was up; he was still a Slytherin and fighting for the opposing side.
But he was still a student of the school with a bleeding arm. The rip on his upper sleeve revealed enough of  his wound for your body to move on its own without much guidance. You led him to the nearest vacant bed, letting him standby until you got everything you needed from the cabinets.
In the time you were treating the wound, you learned that it took him half the war and a Sectumsempra to the arm (which was originally aimed at his chest; thankfully he was able to dodge it—barely) to realize that he was fighting for the wrong side of the Wizarding War. He was glad he was going to sit out the rest of it and vowed to—and you quote—“Never do stupid shit again.”.
The Dark Mark was still tattooed on his arm, a permanent reminder of decisions that did more harm than good both to him and to the people around him. The tattoo faded over time as the population of evil wizards gradually decreased.
Your brain was hot-wired to never trust a Slytherin. Or at least, it used to be.
Much to your surprise, San did keep his words that night at the infirmary. He spent his years after Hogwarts atoning for all the damage he’d caused, dedicating nearly all his hours into hunting the last of the witches and wizards who still practiced the Dark Arts.
San shifted beside you, leaning against the back of the couch before turning to look at you. He set his mug back down to its coaster before he pressed his palm against your forehead.
“I’m feeling a bit better, don’t worry. I think I’ll be fine by morning.”
“I still don’t get why you let yourself be sick when you can just—” he flicked his wand, “—it away.”
You set your own mug down after taking a sip, only noticing then that he pulled out the matching Hogwarts house coasters. His furrowed expression softened when you held his hand, peeling it off your forehead before sandwiching it between your cold ones.
“I’m trying to experience muggle living,” you answered.
Slytherins normally weren’t the type who liked involving themselves with muggle things, more so with the muggle way of living. But San wasn’t always like other Slytherins. Cheesy, you thought. But it was a fact.
You held his stare when his eyes landed on yours. You knew his mind was brewing some sort of egoistic line or anything short yet clever to say. But you were faster.
“You did well today,” you told him, drawing random shapes and symbols on the back of his palm.
Even after hearing it everyday for the past few years, San’s heart still warmed upon hearing the words leave your lips.
You said it the first time at the infirmary. At first, you were unsure if you were saying it to yourself as he heard you utter it after you patched him up. Later that day, you reassured him that it was meant for him. San, at the time, wasn’t too keen on accepting it. Nothing about what he did that day was worth the praise. But he soon realized you were referring to his decision to right his mistakes instead of staying ignorant.
You haven’t stopped saying it since then. The phrase became more of a part of your routine over time but it still held the same value as the first time you ever said it. You still smiled softly after saying it and you still looked at him fondly like you were genuinely proud of it. San was trained to easily catch  whenever people lied—be it in the form of speaking or in acting. But he never found any trace of ingenuity whenever it came to you.
Somehow, that was enough to convince him that he could still make up for mistakes made in the past. It wasn’t too late yet.
You catch the moment the corner of his lips curved up into a smile. One sly finger up, you were ready to—once again—poke the dimple on the side of his mouth.
He hated that. But if he were to be honest, he could never really hate anything you did. One ‘Nox’ and a flick of his wand later, the light on the tip of his wand disappeared—plunging the both of you into complete darkness before your finger could even touch his skin.
“I hate you,” you muttered under your breath, drawing your hand back and crossing them over your chest.
You couldn’t see him clearly in the dark but you could tell the smirk from his tone, “Of course you do.”

"Fred, calm down." George begged me; he walked by my side, trying to talk some sense into me, but it was not the moment. "You gotta understand her— throwing a fit isn't going to help anyone—" I didn't even look in my twin's direction while he spoke. "Bloody hell, Fred—"
"Y/n!" I quickened my pace, leaving George behind after spotting her in one of the corridors, having a chat with a couple of Ravenclaws. "Can I have a word?"
"Sure— Oi!" I hadn't waited for her to reply before grabbing her hand and snatching her away to pull her into the nearest broom closet. "What was that about?"
"Tell me I heard Katie wrong and you're not actually leaving."
"I can't tell you that." She plainly responded, her voice steady.
A single, gobsmacked snide left my throat. "You're joking, right?" My heart ached as if it was being constricted when she shook her head no. "So you're fleeing?"
"What?"
"Things are getting ugly so you're running away."
Her eyes dug into mines as she stayed in a very uncomfortable silence before replying with. "So what if I am?" When I averted my eyes from hers, she called my name. Her eyes were somewhat softer now, with a gleam of plea in them. "For the last two years we had nothing but tragedy. Diggory died, You-Know-Who is back and recruiting, the ministry is full on going against a teenager, this pink colored nasty toad is physically abusing us, and on top of that, I have to put up with my housemates' bullshit for having muggle blood— I'm tired!" Her voice had raised a bit, enough for me to know she was struggling to keep it at bay, but still managed to. "If I can have a life out of this then—"
"You're a coward."
"Fred." there was a warning on her tone, but I couldn't listen.
"You're leaving... people behind," she attempted to reason; I didn't let her. "Dunno why I'm surprised, really. At the end of the day you're a Slytherin for a reason."
Her eyes started to well up, and I couldn't tell if it was with anguish or fury. I knew I was getting under her skin, but that was exactly what I intended to do; if I was going to leave that room scarred, so would she.
"Self-preservation, you call it." I scoffed, feeling my own rage building up faster each passing second. "Pure cowardy."
"Is that what you think?" Her tone wasn't steady anymore; she was holding back the poison of her words, for my sake.
"Yeah." I wasn't capable of doing the same thing for hers. "And I don't want your cheap excuses and emotional manipulation to convince me otherwise." My face was probably red due to the anger, my jaw and fists hurt from clenching them; I was off the rails, and the person who would usually stop me was standing in front of me. "Better leave now so you don't have the chance to sell us out when shit goes down."
Silence fell upon us, our gazes locked, equally watery and with the same amount of fury and sadness within them.
And finally she snapped. "Maybe I'm a coward, but you're a self-absorbed prat who's not able to see beyond your own ego!" The way she said it hurt me more than the sentence itself. "This is not gonna be a DADA class, Fred! I don't want to fucking die because I was too slow casting Protego."
"Good luck, Y/l/n." I curtly wished her before stalking out of the broom closet I have initially dragged her into.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
We avoided each other for a week. The following Monday, when I entered the Great Hall, I found George and Katie quite depressed.
"What's gotten into you?"
They shared a look before my brother turned to me, deciding to break the news himself.
"Y/n left last night." He gave me an apologetic look. "Thought she'd wait until the graduation—"
"But she's had enough." Katie finished, toying with her breakfast. "Honestly, I wish I had a life in the muggle world too."
My lungs were refusing to take the air inside; I felt as if I would choke if I stayed there, so I stormed out, jogging to reach the countryard.
I needed to breathe.
Even after the wind hit my face, that vital task felt like the most difficult thing in the world to accomplish.
I hate her I hate her I hate her I hate her.
A sob escaped my chest, realising the harsh words I had spat at her were probably the last ones she would ever hear from me.
I love her.
A Year And A Half Later
READER'S P. O. V.
I managed to apparate somewhere in the cornfield —the only place around the Burrow I remembered clearly.
I should have landed with a broom, but apparently, Mad-Eye didn't inform Lupin that I would serve as an extra escort for Harry if they were ambushed, so my broom was now smashed somewhere down the muggle road we had flown over.
Mentally cursing the damn moment in which I spoke to Shacklebolt in hopes of being useful in this war, I looked for the entrance of the Weasley home, which took me quite a while.
Funnily enough, it was Lupin who stepped out, wielding his wand and casting yet another hex at me that I somehow managed to block.
With a swift wave of my hand, he was propelled back into the house. "YOU!" A long-haired redhead I recognized as the eldest Weasley helped my old Professor up as I stalked to them with my wand up. "YOU HEXED MY BLOODY BROOM! I'M LUCKY TO BE ALIVE!"
"Y/n, calm down—" Shacklebolt was now besides me with his hands up. "He didn't know you were coming— he was trying to protect George from further harm."
My brain was slow to process his words, but as soon as it did, I started to down my arm. "What happened?"
"Snape hit him with the sectumsempra." My eyes widened at Lupin's heavy words.
"Did everyone else make it?" The three of them remained silent, the ginger shaking his head no.
My breath caught up in my throat, but before I could ask if Fred was alright, another tall ginger flashed the corner of my eye, and my head snapped to the living room's door.
FRED'S P. O. V.
Everyone was scattered around the house. Ginny took Hermione and Fleur to her room; Ron and Harry made its way up too; Tonks went out —she needed a moment alone to mourn Mad-Eye—, and, while my parents and I stayed with George, Lupin, Shacklebolt and Bill went to guard the entrance.
I was still kneeling by George's side, holding his hand while our mother healed his wound the best she could, when we heard a yell followed by a strong blow in the kitchen.
I looked at my mum and dad, my eyes flickering to my twin while I reached for my wand.
As I got up, more yells were heard, this time clearer; the voice was familiar— I knew that voice all too well.
There she stood, at the entrance of my home.
Her eyes met mines as soon as she caught a glimpse of me, and my head started to spin. I knew I had no right to do what I was about to do, but after that night's events, in which the war became very much real, I couldn't help but rush to her and engulf her in a tight hug.
Surprisingly enough, I couldn't take more than two steps forward, since she did what I intended to do first.
"You're alright." She mumbled against my shoulder. My eyes shut, trying to block the tears that threatened to fall. "How's he?" She inquired whilst pulling away with a concerned frown.
Not trusting my voice, I nodded in the living room's direction. A quiet sough escaped my lips as she passed by, her hands lingering on my arms for a brief instant before she entered the room and took careful steps towards the settee.
I barely caught a couple of words from George and Y/n's exchange, my mind still buzzing due to the shock.
"What do you say, Freddie?" I frowned at my twin, regretting not listening to the conversation. "She can take my bed, right? I'm not gonna get far anyway."
"Right." I agreed, struggling for my voice to come out steady. It was Y/n we were talking about; I had known her since our fourth year, I had been friends and more with her, seeing her shouldn't be that nerve-wracking.
A couple of minutes later, we were all heading to our respective rooms, and as I closed my room's door behind me and Y/n, it dawned on me that I had underestimated the anxiety that could cause me being left alone with her.
Get it together, Fred.
"If you want, you can grab a shirt from the drawer." I finally managed to speak, motioning at the chest besides the window. She nodded and turned to it to look for one she could sleep in.
Now that I had the opportunity, I carefully observed her, and soon realized how much she had changed in the time we were apart. Not only when it came to her physical appearance; she stood a bit straighter, talked a little calmer; the joy with which she used to sparkle was dim now, eclipsed by a severe, worried attitude— a sign of us no longer being the kids who messed around at Hogwarts.
"I missed you" I knew right away that wasn't the best start for the conversation.
"It sure didn't seem like it." The bitterness in her tone stung my heart harsher than I expected.
"You're still mad?" The way I was conducting the conversation was making me want to bang my head against the wall.
She sighed, turning around now that she had the shirt on to meet my gaze. "A year and a half, Fred. You didn't contact me for a year and a half. I thought we were friends."
"You left me behind!" I talked back, partly because I panicked, but also because I, to my surprise, was still mad too. "What did you even expect?"
"A letter?" She questioned, throwing herself down on the bed. "I mean— I didn't really expect anything, but a letter would have been a good way to let me know you didn't fucking hate me." My eyes, now fixed on my lap, went wide when Y/n's voice broke at her last three words.
"I'm sorry." I mumbled, quite ashamed of having to apologise while also being scared of saying anything that could harm her further. "I'm sorry about not writing and- uh... I'm sorry about what I said to you. I know it's not an excuse but I was really mad and..." I cleared my throat and felt the blush creeping up my neck even before I finished the sentence. "... and hurt 'cause you- I thought that maybe I wasn't important enough to you and- yeah, I'm sorry about what I said." I tried meeting her eyes but they were fixed on the wall before her.
"It's fine." She shrugged, "I guess you were right anyway."
"I wasn't right-"
"You were." She hugged her knees to her chest and hid her face there. "Wanna know why I'm back?" She didn't need my response. "They're hunting down my family." My heart stopped beating for a second due to the shockingly deadpanning tone. "A friend gave me a tip-off— they were tracking them down. I got to them just in time." I refrained myself from asking about them —the less I knew, the better. "So yeah, you're right, I was a coward and left people behind."
My body shot up and my legs carried me to George's bed; without me being fully aware of what I was doing or which consequences it could have, I sat down and pulled Y/n into my arms.
Though she was shocked at first, her body soon relaxed into the familiarity of my arms, and she let out a relieved sigh. "You're not alone on this." I whispered, pecking her crown. "I'm here, okay?"
"So you don't hate me?" She murmured against my chest.
Maybe it was the fragility of her voice, or the warmth of her embrace I missed so much; maybe it was this past year and a half of regret, or the night's events, but I couldn't hold back my words.
"I love you."
And even though she went stiff, even if I had just blurted them out almost in accident, I didn't regret saying them, because I, in fact, loved her.
She pulled away to look into my eyes. "You mean it?"
"Yeah." I replied, calmer than I had been in a while. "And I'm really sorry about everything, if I could turn back time—" words and air were cut off by her lips crashing against mines.
We had kissed before, but it was on a bet's behalf or to prank someone; this was different, this was her pouring her 'I love you' into actions, and I embrace it gladly.
"No more running away." I commanded when she pulled back. "From now on, we stick together." She nodded, her forehead resting against mine and her palms on my chest.
Tumblr media
“Just focus, it’s not that difficult.”
It was difficult though, the patronus charm was one of the hardest spells to master and even some of the greatest witches and wizards can’t produce one. Yet, for some utterly strange reason, you were expected to be able to cast one. You couldn’t even cast an incorporeal patronus so they gave you a tutor, a sixth year prefect, Five.
Five was the year above, he was one of the strictest prefects you had ever met and the smartest person you could think of. In all the time Five had been in Hogwarts he’d never let his grades drop and had never let anyone or anything distract him, cunning and ambitious, you could tell exactly why he was placed in Slytherin. You, on the other hand, had no clue why you were placed in Slytherin, you couldn’t see yourself as ambitious, cunning or resourceful. It was like you were a puzzle piece that on first glance appeared to fit but the piece is slightly misshaped and distorted.
Faint rumours about Five would drift across the school like the ghosts that lurk in every corner. You had heard tales of how powerful he was, all the duels he’d won, all the advanced classes he took and yet he was here with you, desperately trying to get you to succeed. He was only trying to help you so he could add it to his already huge list of things that he’s done for his head boy application.
“If it’s so easy then you do it.” Turning angrily to face him, you crossed your arms as he looked down on you. He was meant to tutor yet he hadn’t even shown you once how to do the spell.
He huffed. “I’m not the one who needs a tutor to cast a simple spell, y/n. Why should I have to do it?” You observed as he stepped back, crossing his arms to mimic yours.
“You should have to do it because you’re meant to be tutoring me, how can I do the spell if you’re not going to show me how!” You just kept getting more angry as the seconds went on, for how smart Five was meant to be he didn’t have any people skills. He was avoiding eye contact with you, opening and closing his mouth, searching for an answer as you just looked at him expectantly.
“It’s,” you thought for just a moment, Five was about to open up to you, allow you to see into his mad world that he kept to himself. “It’s nothing, I’ve got a head cold right now, it’s difficult to concentrate on casting spells. Let’s just call it a day and I’ll see you in a week at the same time. Practice when you can, It’d be nice to see an improvement.” And with that you grabbed your robe that goes over your jumper and pushed past him, muttering a small ‘whatever’ as you passed him. No matter how great of a wizard he may be, it didn’t deter from the fact that he was a bit of a dick.
Heading back to the common rooms you take a minuet just to think about Five, during your years at Hogwarts you can’t remember a time when you saw him genuinely laugh or smile, he’s always been so uptight since the day you met him when he was a second year and you’d just been sorted into Slytherin.
“Y/n!” Heavy footsteps reverberated off the walls, getting closer. You turn just in time to see Five stop short of a couple of paces in front of you. “If you’re really serious about learning the patronus charm, meet me before breakfast and then after we can go to the library.” You both started walking in the direction of the common room. “and once we’re there we can so some proper research and actually get this spell down and done with.”
“Sure.” He looked relieved at your response, Five began to fully tell you his plan of action with doing the full research to be able to grasp the true meaning of the spell. You listened intently to his plan, humming to what he was saying. You say the password to the common room while Five continued to talk.
When you reached the corridor to the girls dorms you turn to face Five and give him a smile. “Night Five, I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Night y/n, don’t forget 07:30 A.M tomorrow morning down here.” Five gave you a small smile and walked away to the other corridor and began to walk up the stairs, not before turning to give you a small smile. Maybe spending time with Five wouldn’t be as bad as you thought.
In the library, you had stacks of books laid in front of you, any books even containing the word patronus were on the table with you and Five scanning through. You had been going through books for about an hour, only revising information you already knew.
“What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done at Hogwarts?” You ask as you push the book you were currently reading. Five was one of the most well know students but no one knew anything about him at all.
“I’m not very rebellious, I think the worst thing I’ve done is that I was 2 minuets late to a class once.” He copied your actions by pushing his respective book away from him and leant back in his seat. “You?”
You wondered how much you could actually tell him, he was a prefect after all. “I don’t know, I like to teach myself spells before lessons or just silly spells that we wont get taught.” You say matter-o-factly. You watch as Five examined your face, knowing that you were hiding something. “What, don’t you believe me?” Sarcastically acting shocked, you placed a hand over your heart.
Five rolled his eyes. “It’s not that I don’t believe you. It’s just that I’ve heard rumours about you, that’s all.” You looked at him expectantly. “You know that you’ve got an illegal magical creature cartel or that once you broke into the professors lounge, stole alcohol and then sold it at high prices to the 7th years.”
You chuckle at what Five had said, the alcohol ‘rumour’ was true and to say the least it was one of your proudest achievements within the school. “If I confirm any of those rumours will you grass on me?” Five shook his head. “It was me with the alcohol. I would just like to confirm that I definitely do not have any form of cartel.” Five smirks, you both ask questions back and forth until it was time for you both to go off for lessons. You both agree that you would try casting the spell the next day and you went your separate ways, smile on both your faces.
It had been a few days since you and Five had been meeting up to learn how to cast a patronus. However, it’d always end up with you two just sitting and talking for a few hours until it’s time to go to lessons or time to go back to the dorms. Five had really come out of his shell even if it was only to you, it was a new side to Five that hadn’t been seen before and it was nice.
One thing you were especially good at is care for magical creatures, you were always helping Hagrid out with ‘out of curriculum’ tasks. Every Wednesday night you’d sneak out and go to the forbidden forrest and care for a few creatures that needed some extra help. You’d been doing this since second year and now Hagrid left you too it, he knew you treat them well and you wouldn’t get caught. There were some rare creatures you cared for, not to mention some illegal and ‘dangerous’ creatures but you knew they wouldn’t hurt a fly.
But you had gotten lazy when sneaking out, forgetting to check behind you and cover your tracks. You were at the entrance of the forbidden forrest, waiting for 5 minuets before entering to make sure no one was around but you felt a hand get placed on your shoulder.
“Y/n,” It was Five, he knelt down next to you. “What are you doing here, you know you shouldn’t be out of dorms.” You were glad it was only Five but it didn’t stop you from being mad.
“What are you doing here, why did you follow me if you knew you’re not allowed out?” You stared at him expectantly. You sighed “Are you coming then?”
“Where?” Five asked, you just grabbed his hand and kept low as you head into the forest. Five never argued against it or asked any questions. As you reached the clearing you go to every Wednesday, you grab your wand and muttered a quite ‘lumos’ illuminating the opening. You were deep into the forest and knew that the light couldn’t be seen from the castle.
You drop the bag you were carrying that contained various meat and bread to feed the creatures you cared for. You pass your wand to Five for him to hold.
“Y/n, what are we doing-” But you shush him as you could hear steps getting closer, you see him visibly tense and go to grab his wand. Gently, you place a hand on his arm and shake your head before reaching down into your bag to get a piece of bread out.
There she was, a thestral, you’d been looking after her for 3 years now, when you first met her she had a badly damaged wing and couldn’t take off the ground properly but now she was flourishing, she comes back every Wednesday to see you. Today however, she’d brought along her foal, you knelt down so you were height level with the foal and gently offered it some bread.
Stepping back, you turn to look at Five and take in his gobsmacked expression as he eyed the large creatures. “Aren’t- aren’t they classes as extremely dangerous?” You scoffed at his question.
“Do they look dangerous to you?” You went over to him and took back your wand and took his hand, leading him towards the two thestrals. “Come on, I’ll show the others, don’t worry, it’s safe. I’ve been doing this for years.” He didn’t seem to believe you but he let you drag him towards the beautiful creatures, you take his hand that has yours held in a death-grip and place it on the thestrals head.
You let go of Five and step back, watching him relax as he stroked her head. You pat her on the back as she knelt down to allow you to climb on, you nudge Five to get on behind you. Cautiously he sat behind you and wrapped his arms around your waist.
“Brace yourself.” Then you were in the air, soaring away out of the grounds, over the lake and the forests, reaching the stars and beyond. Fives grip loosened around your waist as he looked around in the air, he’d never seen anything so beautiful.
Five was glad he made the decision to go after you them few days ago, he was glad he was assigned as your tutor. He was sick of being boring, sick of just being known as a strict prefect. The real reason he didn’t cast a patronus is because he just didn’t have a good enough memory to be able to conjure one but he wanted to change that and tonight, he was.
Far too quickly you came to a soft landing, you both jumped off before giving the thestrals a soft pat. You let them lead ahead, following them to the rest of the magical creatures you looked after and cared for throughout your time at Hogwarts. The place they were leading you to was a large opening with a small lake, even at the dead of night it was softly lit by various creatures with a gentle buzz from the animals that inhabited it.
“What is this place?” Five was shocked, looking round with large eyes. He was taking in the picture that was in front of him.
“Heaven.” You led Five forward, giving him some snacks to feed the creatures with. The small pups came running towards you first, excited to see what foods you’ve brought them this week. There were crups and kneazles, puffskeins and snidgets. Five then saw Griffins and more thestrals, he couldn’t believe his eyes, all these creatures in one place with not a single one fighting or trying to attack him. Everything he’d ever been told about these creatures was wrong, he was wrong about them.
“Everything in here is protected,” You explain, picking up a crup pup. “I taught myself the Protego Maxima, Fianto Duri and Repello Inimicum charms and use them on this area so only people who travel through on the thestrals can see whats inside, mainly because they know where to go as you can’t see whats inside.” You continue to give love to the crup held in your arms as other creatures make their way over. “People hunt and abuse these animals, I don’t want them to get hurt, they don’t deserve it. There’s some endangered creatures here, so I like to make sure they’re ok.”
Five took a seat next to you, accepting the creatures rubbing against him for attention. You finish dishing out the various snacks and treats to the creatures of the magical world, it was time for you to go back to Hogwarts, you beckon Five back over to the thestral and begin your journey back.
Once reaching the castle grounds you had sneak back into the castle unnoticed, this was the first time you had to get two people back in. You decide the best way of getting back in is to go through the secret passage at the back end of the school, luckily for you, you had acquired the marauders map and were able to see where everyone was at that current time. It was an easy route in that night, you both simply sipped back into the common room.
Just before you turned to walk up to your dorm Five grabbed your arm. “Thank you y/n, for letting me come with you. Sit with me tomorrow at breakfast tomorrow and then straight after we can finally crack the patronus?” You just nodded your head at Five and gave him a smile. A part of you didn’t want to be able to cast the patronus so you could continue spending time with him, in almost a week you’d seen a complete opposite side to Five than the rumours suggested. Five had been acting differently recently as well, being an overall kinder person hadn’t gone unnoticed by professors and students alike.
Five laid in his bed, unable to sleep from the nights events. He couldn’t believe he waited that long to get to know y/n, he can’t believe how boring his time at Hogwarts used to be. In them few days of knowing y/n, Five had had the most fun and interesting time. Not to mention y/n’s way with magical creatures, how much she actually cared for them and she let Five see that side, see her ‘heaven’ as y/n put it. Five hoped that she wouldn’t actually be able to cast the patronus so he could just be with her more. He hoped that after tonight he would finally be able to cast one as well.
The next morning, you were stood in an empty classroom with Five, watching closely as he was about to cast his patronus. You watch his shaking hands as he took a defensive stance, you didn’t know what his patronus could be but then he said the spell.
A silver otter burst from the end of his wand, it slid through the air playfully before dissipating in the air. “An otter?” Five seemed almost disappointed with his patronus.
“An otter represents playfulness and being relaxed, god knows you’ve hid that well.” You joked cheekily joked, nudging his arm. “I guess it’s my turn, innit?” Sighing you turn to the side, allowing for room for whatever patronus would appear, if one would appear at all.
“ Expecto Patronum!” A white light shoots from your wand, through the light a giant thestral galloped graciously, turning towards you, circling you before disappearing. You look at the space where the beautiful beast stood and then turned to look at Fives gobsmacked face. “I did it!” You embraced Five, almost knocking him off his feet.
“You did it.” He sounded almost breathless in his response. He didn’t sound too pleased about it though.
You stepped back. “You don’t sound too happy about it, you actually managed to get me to do it.”
“Well now that you’ve done it, I don’t need to tutor you any more.” He looked sad, at a stretch you could say devastated.
“I’m still going to hang round with you even if you don’t need to tutor me anymore. You’re pretty good craic to be honest, I’d like to keep that around.”  Five smiled to your response, glad not to be losing a quick found friend. Maybe the rest of your time at Hogwarts wouldn’t be so bad.
I Dare You to Kiss Me
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18386921
“Alright, congrats to the six of you. You’ve officially passed all parts of the training to be Aurors, although some of you I’m still not sure how you passed. Enjoy the night off, because tomorrow morning you will be reporting bright and early as Aurors Chang, Granger, Longbottom, Malfoy, Potter and Weasley.”
A chorus of, “thank you, Auror Black,” was heard from the six newly-minted Aurors in the room. They all shuffled out and decided to head to the Leaky Cauldron to celebrate.
After a few pints of butterbeer and many shots of Firewhiskey, everyone was significantly pissed, save for Hermione who kept reminding everyone that they had work in the morning and shouldn’t come in to work on their first official day hungover.
“Live a little, Hermione,” Ron slurred. “We’re the Golden Trio, we deserve a beverage or two for becoming Aurors.”
“Need I remind you that you barely passed the written examination, even after I forced you to study for a week, Auror Weasley ,” Hermione’s tone was teasing, but her words were true.
Harry had just opened his mouth to get them to stop bickering when a silvery wolf patronus appeared in front of them all.
“Get to the ministry, immediately,” was all that came out of the Patronus’ mouth.
“Shit, that’s my cousin Tonks’ patronus. Something bad must be happening if they’re calling us in; they must need all hands on deck, we’ve only been Aurors for three hours,” Draco was panicking.
“I told you guys not to drink so much, come on let’s go,” Hermione commanded, watching as the other five stumbled to their feet, “we better floo in since you will probably splinch yourselves in this state.”
As soon as all six of them had flooed to the Ministry, they felt an oppressive force upon them, heightened by the fact that it was completely dark. Hermione was the first to act and tried to cast Lumos, but found she couldn’t produce even the easiest of charms. The six of them huddled together, not knowing what was happening or who could be in the Ministry Atrium with them.
A familiar voice called out from the shadows, “did you guys really believe training was as simple as taking an exam and proving you can cast a few spells?”
“Head Auror Black, is that you?” Cho tried her best to sound sober, but the fear in her voice gave away a slight slurring in her words.
“Ah, seems the kiddies have been out to play. If it’s childish games you guys are interested in, let’s play a game, come join us,” as Black spoke, the lights came on. The room was clear except for a large table in the center where Aurors Black and Tonks sat with eight glasses of water, one at each seat.
The group nervously made their way over and sat, unsure of what was happening.
“Drink up, kiddos; it seems you all need to rehydrate,” Black spoke with authority, leaving no option but to drink.
Everyone raised their glasses and downed them, but the drink was bitter and definitely not water.
“Ugh, what the shite is that, are you trying to poison us?” Ron asked.
“Of course not, dearie,” Ron turned red at the condescending pet name coming from Black, “I’m trying to play a game with you all. I just had us all drink Veritaserum, so there’s no getting out of telling the truth. Now, since you seem so eager to play...Truth or Dare?”
“You called us into the Ministry to play truth or dare?” Neville finally spoke up, completely bewildered.
“It’s the simplest way to test your loyalty and bravery, so yes, that is why you are here. Now, Ron, answer my question.”
“Fine, you madwoman, truth.”
Everyone looked at Ron, shocked he would be so rude, but Bellatrix only cackled. “It seems you’ve got some fire when forced to tell the truth. Tell me, how rat arsed are you?”
“Completely and utterly shitfaced,” Ron spoke with no hesitation, forced to be honest.
“As I suspected. I’m gonna up the stakes of this game for everyone. Every time it’s your turn, you must take a shot. If you want to refuse your truth or dare you can, in exchange for taking a second shot. Last one of the six of you to pass out or puke, gets an extra week of vacation time. Now, Ron, continue the game.”
“Fine, Hermione, truth or dare?” Ron asked.
Hermione immediately felt a compulsion to take a shot according to the new rule and downed it, grimacing. “Dare.”
“I dare you to not speak for the rest of the game.”
Auror Black laughed again, as she conjured a scroll and quill, “I’ll provide some materials if you choose to keep your mouth shut, so you can still play. Or you can take another shot.”
Hermione, refusing to lose the game by getting too drunk angrily took the parchment and wrote, “Tonks, truth or dare?”
“Dare, of course”
Hermione thought for a second and wrote, “I dare you to morph into the ugliest person you can imagine.”
The group watched as Tonks used her Metamorphmagus skills to transform into a cross between Mundungus and Umbridge before their eyes, which was followed by a round of laughter.
The game continued to pass with a duel between Draco and Neville, leaving Neville knocked out and out of the game. Cho refused to answer a salacious question about her love life and chose to take a shot, resulting in her puking and out of the game.
Hermione’s eyes widened as Black got Ron to admit to the depth of his feelings for Hermione. She was finding it rather lucky that she couldn’t say anything out loud at this moment, until Ron turned to her and asked, “truth or dare?”
She took a shot and wrote “dare,” hoping this would at least avoid the possibility of her having to break his heart in the midst of a game.
“I dare you to kiss me.”
Oh fuck, that plan backfired. She avoided eye contact with everyone at the table and poured herself a second shot to escape the dare. The room was filled with tension and she peeked over and saw Ron red-faced and taking a shot of his own. She tried to ignore the pang of guilt in her chest and carefully wrote, “Auror Black, truth or dare?”
“Truth.”
The silence of the room was broken only by the scratch of a quill, “why are you making us play this game? It doesn’t seem like we’re doing any actual training.”
“We do something like this every year, at the end of training. It’s more of a team bonding thing than anything else. You need to know everything about each other, so that you can trust each other in the field. And I need to gather enough information to assign your partners, ensuring I don’t create an uncomfortable situation. Lastly, I realize that you are all intimidated by me, but I need the trust to exist between us all as well.”
The end of Auror Black’s speech was marked by Ron hitting the floor, passed out. Hermione groaned and put her head in her hands, completely embarrassed by his actions.
“Safe to say, I know not to partner you with him now,” Black joked.
The game began to pick up again, getting crazier by the minute. Draco was now sitting on Harry’s lap, looking rather cozy, which wasn’t missed by the three witches. Tonks had broken into Umbridge’s office and smashed a cat plate. And yet again, Hermione found herself in the hot seat when Harry asked her to admit who she had a crush on. Harry didn’t know the truth so she couldn’t blame him, but also knew if she took this shot to get out of it, she would likely vomit.
She steeled her resolve and wrote with a shaky hand, “Head Auror Bellatrix Black.” She felt the heat rise to her cheeks as everyone leaned across the table to read what she wrote. She looked up and saw three faces with jaws dropped in complete shock and one smugly triumphant smirk.
Hermione barely noticed the rest of the game, it passed in a blur. The only thing she was aware of was Bellatrix’s eyes on her the entire time. She couldn’t bear to meet them afraid of the rejection she knew was coming.
The sound of light snoring came from the chair Harry and Draco occupied and all the sudden, Hermione realized she was the last of the new Aurors to stay awake.
“Nymphadora, I dare you to leave,” Black said quietly, scarcely more than a whisper.
“You got it, Aunt Bella,” Nymphadora disapparated immediately, not even bothering to get angry at the use of her full name.
Hermione felt incredibly uncomfortable, not knowing what she should do now. Bellatrix’s eyes were still on her, and she finally looked up and met the steely gaze.
“One last round before I declare you the winner. Truth or dare?”
Hermione took a deep breath and exhaled, “okay dare.”
“I dare you to kiss me.” The same dare Ron had asked of her, but so much more delicious coming from this woman.
Hermione walked to the other side of the table and went to press a chaste kiss to Black’s lips, but Bellatrix was having none of that. She grabbed Hermione by the hips and pulled their bodies close together.
“I meant a proper kiss, pet.”
The two sets of lips reconnected in a fiery passion, full of longing and secrets come to light. Hermione didn’t even notice the pull of apparition, until all the sudden she was being pushed into a bed, with the softest sheets she’d ever felt.
“I suggest you take your one week of vacation, starting now.”
“Yes, let me just tell the Head Auror,” Hermione said, grinning cheekily up at Bellatrix who stood above her slowly unlacing her corset.
Together
Pairing: Charlie Weasley x mc
Part 2 of The World Cup. (Necessary to know original characters that appear here.) A small conversation in the dark.
After the Death Eaters attacked the camp, and taking care of Charlie’s injury, Kate felt lost.
Somehow, she mustered up the courage to stand up and leave Charlie at the tent. Clutching her wand tightly, she advanced through the rubble toward the medical tent. Hopefully she would find her backpack. Everything around her was destroyed. As she walked she realized that she was in the same pitiful state as her surroundings, covered in ash and dirt.
 The place that was once used to store medical material was burnt. Kate saw Florin rummaging through the rubble. "You’re fine?". Florin, startled, took a posture of attack and pointed his wand at Kate. "It’s me!" she shouted raising her arms. Florin resumed his work and Kate lowered her head to inspect the floor. "We won’t find anything useful here." Florin responded with a grunt. Kate touched her necklace and walked to the wreckage of the store. She saw her backpack under a burnt cloth and crouched down to pick it up. Her uniform was scorched but usable and her notebooks had been reduced to ashes. She sighed resigned. At least her potion chest was intact.
 Suddenly, Kate and Florin stood up to hear a voice from afar. "There’s someone there?" "Alina?"
"Kate!" Two figures advanced toward them. Vasile was with her. "Quick! There are five people in the forest, injured, one of them is a muggle. Nougal sent us to see if there was anyone left."
"We don’t know where Rahela is…"
"She’s with us. Come on."
Nobody died that night. After curing the group and erasing the memory of the muggle, Kate practically flew back to the Weasleys' tent. " Is everybody all right?" A startled Charlie received her
"Yes. You were the only one left. The rest already went to sleep.”
He caught her in a hug. "Where were you?" Kate hugged him back with the same intensity. "I went to get my things and found my team. We went into the woods, there were wounded people." He closed his eyes and hugged her harder.
 "Let me see the wound, I didn’t even clean it…"
"It’s okay, no scar, you’re just that good." He put his hand on the back of her neck and began to massage it lightly. "I have to change… I’ll put on my uniform dress, I forgot my pyjamas…" she released a forced laughter. Charlie shook his head and held her hand, dragging her to his bunk. Without saying anything, he checked that the boys were asleep and began unbuttoning her blouse.
"Charlie…" Kate warned, looking around, nervous. He just shook his head again and continued his task. Delicate fingers caressed the exposed skin. Kate raised one hand and touched Charlie’s frown with one finger, causing him to look up. His expression relaxed slightly. He slid her shirt over her shoulders, the bra now exposed.
Charlie looked back again and changed his position, completely covering her body. Years of practice helped him get rid of the bra and she quickly covered herself with her arms. He reached to her side and helped her put on his pyjama shirt. One side of his mouth curved up in half a smile as she was swallowed by the piece of clothing.
He sat on the bed and slowly unbuttoned her pants. Kate knew that it relaxed him to take care of her and, even if she was perfectly capable of changing her clothes, she always let him do it if he wanted. With her feet she finished taking off her pants and grabbed both sides of Charlie’s face to give him a long kiss. "Thank you." she whispered.
Once settled under the blankets, Charlie’s arm pillowed her head and he hugged her body against his chest. She started playing with the soft hairs there.
“Charlie” she muttered “the candle…” she said amused. Charlie grunted and without letting her go, he turned his head and blew on the flame on his bedside table, leaving the place almost in complete darkness. It was vaguely illuminated by the light from outside.
Something soft touched Charlie’s face and he reached out to put the intrepid strand of hair behind her ear, caressing the side of her face.
“What do you want to do tomorrow?” she asked.
“Go home”
“But…Romania?” Charlie sighed. “No, actually I was thinking about staying at the Burrow for a day or two. To be with mom.” Kate nodded. “You can go back, though. Nougal will want you at the hospital as soon as possible and you need rest.”
Kate frowned and started drawing invisible figures on his back with her fingers. “I want to be with you…” Charlie squeezed her lightly and placed his lips on her forehead, staying there.
“Besides, I’d like to talk with Tonks about…today.”
“Do you think she’ll be able to tell you anything? The aurors must know something already.”
“I don’t know.”
They abruptly stopped talking at the sound of one of the beds squeaking. Percy had rolled over.
Kate slid her hand down Charlie’s back and then up, caressing his bare shoulder and feeling his muscles before going down again finally resting on his hip. His eyes, now used to the darkness, could see the silhouette of her lips and without containing himself he leaned in to kiss them. She inhaled sharply.
“Do you think He is back?” she asked after pulling back. “I don’t know. But we can’t scratch the idea yet.”
They fell silent again, this time for a longer while. Kate concentrated on her breathing and started to fall asleep when she heard Charlie whisper again.
“You casted lumos with your mouth earlier…” his tone amused and yet impressed. “Hmm?”
“Yes, before, when you where healing my wound after the explosion. I saw you lightening the wand and then you put it in your mouth and it was still shining.”
“Oh…I’m not really sure how I managed to do that. I was concentrated in you and…I don’t think I could do that again if I wanted…”
“Why not? That’s advanced magic and you did that without thinking. You are the smartest witch I know, you can do anything you want.”
Kate smiled but shook her head, placing a kiss on his chest. “Don’t know many witches, huh?
“I mean it. And before you say something about how Nougal won’t promote you to mediwizard let me tell you, Lady, that you are wrong. He is going to give you that job sooner or later because you deserve it.”
“Since when can you read me so well? You can’t even see me right now.”
“It’s a sixth sense. A dragon sense. Makes me extra perceptive around you. Like…like a demiguise-dragon.” Kate couldn’t help but giggle. “Don’t laugh, you should take notes you know? You have to train yourself in the art of it.” Her face fell when she heard the word ‘notes’. She took a deep breath and he looked down, despite not being able to see her. “What?” he asked softly. Kate buried herself more under the covers and against Charlie, who embraced her protectively. “My investigation…I will have to start all over again. It’s completely burnt.” She closed her eyes and let out a resigned huff.
“Why did you bring it here?” When she didn’t answer, Charlie frowned. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to reproach you for it. I was just curious.”
“Listen, I’m…” she sighed “I’m angry at myself, Charlie, not you. I…I shouldn’t have brought the journals, I wanted to talk with other mediwizards, you know…exchange opinions, ideas. Now I’ll have to take samples again, repeat the tests, rewrite everything and…”
“Katie.” He said more sternly than he intended. “You are not going to write you investigation tonight. Or are you?”
“No…” he kissed her hair again. “Then we will worry about it tomorrow.” She knew he was right, as usual, but that didn’t fix things. She buried her head in the crook of his neck and hugged him. “I love you” she murmured, making Charlie smile. “And I love you, snitch.”
Soon, Charlie’s soft snores were the only thing that could be heard inside the tent. The next day would be filled with worries and hard decisions but they would overcome it. Together.
Note
i sent this as a private message but then i saw i could ask like this so here can you do a fic where harry is looking on the maurauders map and sees draco in a place in the castle he has never been before so when draco leaves he goes to check it out and finds that draco is painting portraits of harry? sorry about spelling XD
Thank you so much for requesting this, I loved this prompt ~ I changed it up a little though, I hope that’s okay
Harry tossed and turned restlessly in his bed, desperately trying to think of any tactics that might help him sleep. He could count sheep, but Harry had already tried that. He could listen to music, but the only music Harry had was on his CD player, which wouldn’t work on Hogwarts grounds. He could think of his “happy place” like Hermione suggested, but Harry’s all of Harry’s happy places (a Quidditch match, Weasleys’ Wizards Wheezes, the Burrow) were often rambunctious and loud, and not at all relaxing or sleep-inducing. Well… there was one more thing Harry could do to try to fall asleep.
“Lumos,” Harry whispered as he reached for the Marauder’s Map, which he kept in the drawer of his bedside table. Harry was careful to be quiet as he moved, not wanting to wake up his eighth year roommate, Justin Finch-Fletchley.
As soon as the Marauder’s Map was open on Harry’s lap, Harry’s eyes instinctively searched for Draco Malfoy’s name. When Harry didn’t see the bond’s name at first glance, he frowned. There was really no reason for Harry to look for Malfoy on the map. They weren’t sixteen anymore, and Harry had no reason to suspect Malfoy was up to anything. In fact, Malfoy had been civil to him since school started, and in some instances, even kind. Harry only looked for Malfoy’s location because of an old habit from sixth year, or at least that’s what Harry told himself.
Harry sighed as he examined the map more thoroughly. Hogwarts wasn’t a very exciting place in the dead of the night when there was no Dark Lord, convicted felons, or barmy professors to wander around in the halls. Harry was about to put the map back in the drawer and accept the fact that he was going to have a sleepless night when he noticed a name hovering in a part of the castle Harry didn’t recognize. Harry’s breath caught. The name was Draco Malfoy.
Harry looked closer at the room Malfoy was in and furrowed his brow. It was on the fifth floor, and as far as Harry knew, that was where Muggle Studies, Music, and Art classes were taught. Muggle Studies definitely didn’t seem like Malfoy, so he must have been in a music or art room. But why in the middle of the night?
As it so happened, Harry did indeed get a sleepless night, but only because he was kept up by the thoughts and questions swimming around in his head after seeing Malfoy’s name on the Marauder’s Map. At breakfast, Hermione scolded Harry for not getting the healthy amount of sleep, and Harry nodded along, but  he wasn’t actually paying any attention to Hermione’s words. He was too busy staring at Malfoy from across the Great Hall and thinking up all sorts of reasons for him to be on the fifth floor so late at night. Harry imagined many scenarios, and while they were entertaining, none of them seemed plausible. For example, Harry’s idea of Draco sneaking into the Muggle Music classroom because he had a secret love of playing tuba covers of Celestina Warbeck songs.
That night, after Justin fell asleep, Harry brought out his map again and found that Malfoy was in the same place he had been the night before. Harry traced the name ‘Draco Malfoy’ with his fingertip and decided that he would find out what Draco was doing there by tomorrow night.
“Malfoy,” Harry said, a bit too loudly, by means of greeting Malfoy in the library the following afternoon.
Malfoy was sitting by himself at a table that could have fit eight people. He was utterly transfixed by the book he was reading, enthralled enough that Harry was afraid he might have to speak up again to pull Malfoy’s focus away from his book. Luckily, just then a group of fourth year Hufflepuffs burst into laughter at a table nearby, and Malfoy looked up to see what the fuss was about. Malfoy didn’t even bat an eye at the Hufflepuffs once he noticed Harry though.
“Potter,” Malfoy said, his tone surprised. “What are you doing here?”
“Um, studying.” Harry gestured to his bookbag and smiled nervously. “Mind if I sit here?”
“No,” Malfoy said quickly. He nodded at the seat across from him and offered Harry a nervous smile of his own.
“What’s that you’re reading?” Harry asked casually as he slid into the chair across from the blond.
“Oh, nothing,” Malfoy said offhandedly.
Harry tried to spy the title of Malfoy’s book, but all he could see was ‘The Intricacies of-’ and Malfoy’s hand blocked the rest.
“Are you okay, Potter?” Malfoy suddenly asked. His eyes roamed over Harry’s face meticulously. “You look exhausted.”
Harry flushed. ‘That’s because I’ve been up all night thinking about you. And by the way, how do you look so good right now? You’re the one who’s been disappearing off to strange parts of the castle in the middle of the night,’ Harry thought. But what he said was, “Yeah, I had to stay up late last night to finish an essay.”
“Of course you did,” Malfoy said. “There are easier ways to get away with procrastinating, you know.”
Harry narrowed his eyes. “Oh, really?”
Malfoy nodded and Harry raised his eyebrows in return.
“Sweet talk,” Malfoy explained with a shrug.
“Sorry?”
“Bloody hell, do you really not get it?” Malfoy said. His tone was amused. “You’re Harry fucking Potter, all you have to do is smile real pretty and say you couldn’t get the assignment done because you were busy saving someone’s life and in a second flat you’ll get an extension.”
Harry wasn’t even listening to Malfoy’s final words, he was still stuck on the part about his smile. “You think my smile is pretty?” Harry said smugly.
Malfoy blushed faintly and rolled his eyes. “Don’t let it go to your head, Potter.”
“Too late,” Harry said with a grin.
The two of them spent the rest of the afternoon in the library together, but even after hours of subtly asking questions that might lead to an explanation of Malfoy’s midnight trips to the fifth floor, Harry was still just as clueless about Malfoy’s nightly activities. So Harry decided that he would just have to catch Malfoy in the act.
It was about a quarter to midnight when Harry left his dorm room and headed towards the Muggle Studies/Music/Art classrooms with his Invisibility Cloak and the Marauder’s Map.
Once Harry was on the fifth floor, he pulled out the map, cast Lumos, and checked Malfoy’s location again. He was in the room at the end of the hall. Harry tread in that direction, taking extra care to be as silent as possible. ‘Magical Art and Painting’ read the plaque on the door at the end of the hall. Harry inhaled sharply. Malfoy was an artist? Harry tried the doorknob, and upon finding the door to be locked, cast Alohomora. Harry winced as he pushed the door open and the action caused a low, creaking noise.
Harry was relieved when he stepped inside the room and discovered that, just like in the library, Malfoy was too preoccupied with his task to notice Harry’s presence. The room was lit up with lanterns and Malfoy was standing over an easel with his back to Harry. Intrigued, Harry stepped closer. He had to stand directly behind Malfoy to get a good view of the painting Malfoy was working on, and when he saw what the painting depicted, he gasped.
It was Harry. Malfoy was painting Harry. And he was quite the artist, actually. In the painting, Harry was flying on his broom, and Hogwarts was far in the background. Painting-Harry was very detailed, every angle of his scar adjusted to perfection, the outline of his muscles defined and precise, his eyes the exact shade of green they were in real life, and Malfoy had even taken the time to draw each individual eyelash. The expression on painting-Harry’s face was carefree and happy; Harry was laughing. His arms weren’t on the broom, but were spread wide as if painting-Harry was trying to embrace the wind. Malfoy was currently painting the sky behind Harry with a soft pink color. Harry - the real one - was suddenly filled with a warmth that brought a smile to his face. He wanted to tell Malfoy that he thought the painting was beautiful, and more than that he wanted to ask why Malfoy was painting him in the first place. So, being the Gryffindor that he was, Harry pulled off his Invisibility Cloak and addressed the artist, “Malfoy.”
Malfoy was so startled that he physically jumped. His paintbrush fell out of his hand and dripped pink paint all over his trousers before hitting the ground. When Malfoy turned around and realized who exactly it had been to speak his name, his cheeks and ears turned the same color pink.
“Potter?” Malfoy said hoarsely. “What are you doing here?”
“Looking for you, actually.” Harry smiled a little and tried not to find the streak of green paint on Malfoy’s left cheekbone adorable.
Malfoy shook his head in confusion. “That doesn’t- I don’t- Um, why were you looking for me?”
Harry didn’t quite know how to answer this, so he responded with a question of his own. “Why were you painting me?”
“Oh, I, uh, I can explain.” Harry smiled as Malfoy struggled to fight his embarrassment. Malfoy cleared his throat and said in the most formal tone he could manage, “This painting is a gift for you. In return for your testimony at my mother and I’s trials.”
Harry’s smile drooped a little. “I don’t expect anything in return for doing that. I testified for you and your mother because I don’t think either of you deserve to go to Azkaban.”
Malfoy raised his chin defiantly. “Well then it’s in return for you saving my life.”
Harry raised his eyebrows. “You saved my life first,” he pointed out.
Malfoy frowned. “Well, I wouldn’t say I- All I did was- It’s not as if-”
Harry chuckled as Malfoy stumbled over his words. “It’s okay, Malfoy. You can just admit that you painted me because you wanted to.”
Malfoy closed his mouth abruptly and stared at the floor. “It’s just a painting, Potter. Don’t let it go to your head.”
“Too late,” Harry quipped. He stepped closer to Malfoy so that the two of them were mere centimeters apart. Malfoy’s head snapped up when he realized how close Harry was, and his grey eyes widened when they met Harry’s green ones.
“Do you like it?” Malfoy asked, his voice quiet. “The painting?”
Harry nodded, his gaze intense and his expression sincere. “I don’t know how I could ever show you how much I appreciate it.”
“I can think of a few ideas,” Malfoy said. His eyes dropped to Harry’s lips.
“Oh yeah?” Harry said, hoping he didn’t sound too eager.
“Yeah,” Malfoy said, and he kissed him.
The Wizarding World - The Coming of the Metamorphmagus - Chapter 2 (Missing The Train)
THE WIZARDING WORLD of Harry Potter - THE  COMING OF THE METAMORPHMAGUS
   David looks around the ruins of a castle, the smell of death still lingers in the air. He coughs on dust that lingers like a grey cloud. Staring at the two dead bodies lying on the ground, his is moved to tears. The eyes of the deceased woman open as she breathes in deep. She looks up at David as she sees her wand resting in his hand.    “I see that you found my wand!” the woman says as she lays there on the cold ground. David nearly stumbles over a pillar as the woman’s green eyes look at the cracked ceiling. “Sorry if I scared you…” she offers as David carefully walks over to the dead woman who doesn’t look dead at all!    David looks at the wand in his hand and at the woman, “Your wand?” he says as he hands the wand to the woman. “I believe this is yours then.” he says as the woman does not seem interested in it...what she has become, she has no need of wands.    “Help me up…” she asks him as David pockets the wand and takes the woman’s cold, icy hands and pulls her to him as she looks at the body of her husband.    “Are you Nymphadora?” David asks as the woman steadies herself.    “Just Tonks!” she says as she looks at David’s confused and scared face…nothing as she imagined a brave wizard to be.    David thinks about what his mom said. ‘…22 years ago, all magic folk were at war with one another when the Dark Lord came to power and took over the Ministry. In 1998, he declared war on Hogwarts and many died…’ He looks back at Tonks as it makes sense now, “This is a dream!”    “No…” she says as she looks at the pocket where her wand is. “A memory.”    “And he?” David asks as he looks at the man resting peacefully on the cold stone.    “Remus…” she says as her heart breaks.    “If you don’t mind me asking, just to get it out of the way, but how did you die?” David asks as he feels his pocket to be sure the wand was still there.    “My estrange aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange cast a killing curse…” Tonks says as she can’t believe she was that careless!    “Killing curse!?” David says as he did not know there was such a thing. Tonks nods as she laughs.    “You truly are a yearling!” she says as she feels that they are wasting precious time. “I understand that you are still trying to come to grips about being a wizard…but then...I sense that you are not exactly a wizard as I wasn't exactly a witch!"    “Huh?” David asks as this is something he did not expect. Tonks smiles and shakes her finger as she won’t say.    “You’ll have to learn your heritage when you get to Hogwarts...” she begins as David sighs as he shakes his head.    “It is too late…there is no way I can get to London in time and mom says that I need a letter…”    “Hogwash!” Tonks extorts, “you just need to be between 10-12 years old and be at Hogsmeade by 7pm of September 1st.” she explains as David is clueless.    “Again, impossible!” David protests as he does not like to repeat himself.    “Didn’t my son give you a ticket?” she says with a smile as David pauses to stare at her and her face transforms as her nose and lips turn into a duck bill as she make a face at him as David chuckles as that was unexpected. “You’re a good soul young man…misguided and misplaced…but a good soul nonetheless!” She looks at her feet and at David. “Can you help me up to my feet?” David shrugs his shoulders as he pulls with all his might…but she is too heavy. “No, you’re doing it the hard way! Take out my wand and say wingardium leviosa as you swish the wand counter clockwise once and then flick on leviosa…”    David knows he struggled with lumos and now this complicated spell…but he is compelled to help her. “Wingardium Leviosa…” David says as he swishes counter-clockwise and flicks the wand as he concentrates on Tonks lifeless body and slowly it rises into the air. David smiles as she laughs.    “Well, well…look at you!” she says as David uses the wand like a controller as he moves Dora with his wand. He walks over to her and with his free hand, straightens Nymphadora out and lightly drops her to her feet. There is a surge of energy as a wave of green light falls off her body like dust and she is able to move on her own. “Thank you!” she says as David takes a step back. She walks over to her husband and with David’s help, stands him up and the same green dust falls off him.    “What is that?” David asks as the green light fades away.    “The remains of the killing curse!” she says as Remus opens his eyes and looks into the eyes of his wife...his love.    “Dora?” he says as his voice is rough. He looks at David and slowly moves to the boy. “Thank you for breaking the curse…now our spirits can rest!” Remus says as he looks at the wand in David’s hand and then at Dora.    “Teddy gave it to him,” Dora says as Remus is relieved to hear that their son is alive. Remus turns back to David as he shakes his hand and then pauses.    “He’s a therianthrope!” Remus says as Dora buries her face in her hands.    “What is a therianthrope?” David wonders as Remus sees that he messed up.    “All in good time…you need to get to Hogwarts…” Remus says as Dora nods.    “With my wand and memories, you already have a talent in many skills…but like any muscle, you’ll need to exercise them...” Dora says as she feels time is almost gone. She walks over to David and places her hands over David’s face and smiles. “To you David Mira, I give you the talent of metamorphmagus…may it be useful talent…but accepting it, I also have unlocked your birthright. I’d urge you to get on that train!”    Dora and Remus walk hand-in-hand as they turn and smile. “It was nice to meet you David Mira Gill…” Dora smiles as Remus nods, “…I do believe if you stay the course, be true to your friends and family…you might be one of the greatest wizards of your age!” with a brilliant light, David opens his eyes as the sun is up and his mind is exhausted.    His body has been asleep, but with his mind awake all night, his hands cramp from the death grip he hand on Dora’s wand. Looking at his notebook that he has been using last night to record notes, he sees something inscribed in glowing letters: To Mr. Mira Gill,    Thank you for helping Remus and I pass on…and to go and see our son. Your selfless actions have impressed us and we are so glad to have met you.    Sadly, I am afraid that your pain has just begun and you’ll need good friends to help you through the answers to questions you have. Be true to yourself and understanding that you are unique and I feel that your arrival to Hogwarts will be well timed for the mysteries that we fear are yet to come…    As a personal gift for your kindness for freeing my husband and I from the Unforgivable Curse, I have bestowed my talents of Metamorphmagus to you. You are free to develop the talent as you see fit and I hope you receive as much joy as I received from the rare talent of shape shifting without the need of potion or spells…and I believe you’ll find this talent useful as your birthright talents begin to blossom!    I wish I could tell you, but that would not be fair to you and I believe that Hogwarts has the resources to prepare and teach you about your family’s history. I believe that if you like, you’d make a wonderful Auror one day…seek out the Potter’s to learn more about this career.    Please keep this note private as it is my gift to you to open your talents as I can tell that you are at risk of denying our Wizarding heritage and wish to help keep you on track. I will not help you cheat or give you abilities beyond your skill…but I will also help you achieve… ‘Trust your House! Unless, you are sorted into Slytherin!’    Your skills in casting complicated spells might make you a wonderful duelist! Be sure to pay attention in your Defense Against the Dark Arts class. The teacher of that class is a wonderful instructor and if you are honest with her…she’ll train you in the defense skills. With my wand, you have the ability to cast the corporeal Patronus and Shield Charm…but you’ll need to learn to control them with your own talent!    I suggest extra reading in potions regarding poisons and antidotes just in case if you find yourself needing them in the future. And don’t skip your transfiguration classes…you’ll enjoy them! Seek out Madam Pomfrey and ask to learn from her…she will only teach people who approach her and her studies are not presented to the school.    Overall, have fun…and enjoy your youth! You have a wonderful family and your being a wizard is a blessing to your mom and dad, which you can’t comprehend at this time.    Do what you need to do today…but get to that train! And keep an open mind...and remember...tuck-n-roll! --Tonks    David looked at the letter, he is certain that he did not write it…it must have happened during the night. He wants to show his parents…but if they read this, they’d think him crazy and he’d be locked away in a padded cell! David looks at the clock, it is 7:21am…dad should be going to work and mom will be knocking on the door soon.    David tosses the covers and dresses as he closes his notebook and looks at the ticket. He needs to convince his mom to let him go to Glenfinnan and see what is there…if he does not go, he might not get the chance ever again! David quietly packs a bag of clothes, medication for his asthma and eczema, his notebook and money he has been saving over the years. Looking at his clock, it reads that it is ten after eight…odd…his mom must have slept in!    Opening the door to the RV, he looks around and sees no one outside. He walks as he yawns to the house as he opens the door and goes inside. Inside the nine bedroom house, it is quiet. The kitchen lifeless and void of breakfast. The floorboards silent except for his own footsteps. He climbs the stairs to the second floor to where his mom and dad live and find their room empty.    David is concern, ‘Where did she go?’ as David quickly returned to the kitchen to find a note pin to the fridge with a magnet and it reads: ‘Son, you mom is gone for the day and I have to work late myself, food is in the fridge. If you need any help, the number is on the fridge… Dad’    David pins the message back to the fridge as he drags his body to the chair as he ponders what he is going to do now. The calendar reminds him that it is September 1st and the clock counts down to an important decision. He closes his eyes as he bows his head, he does not want to run off…his parents would kill him if he had no proof! He studies the grain in the cherry table as his ears hear a horrible screeching sound outside the door. He sits there, thinking it will go away, but it does not…it gets louder and begins scratching the door.    David rises as he walks over to the door and opens it to see the darnest thing! Standing on the welcome mat is an owl with a letter in its mouth. ‘Now that is air mail!’ David thinks as he reaches down to see if the owl is okay and he takes the letter and the bird jumps and flaps silently away. Looking at the letter, the envelope says: Mira David Gill The Trailer Under The Stars Hillside Estate PH33 6RS Fort William, UK Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Headmistress: Minerva McGonagall (Order of the Phoenix, First Class, Grand Sorc.. Chf. Witch. Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Witches) Dear Mr. Gill, As it would seem, between the years of 1985 and 1998, all records of magical and muggle persons born were destroyed at the ministry of He Who Must Not Be Named. Thus we regret that we were unable to reach you by September 1st 2020. Know that you were not forgotten. Therefore, under these special circumstances we are pleased to inform you that you have still been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1. Upon arrival, you are expected to exit the train and report to the Great Hall where you will be swiftly sorted into your House and are scheduled to prudently perform pontifically and pridefully pick up pointers from your prefect. Someone will meet with you as you exit the train. We await your owl by no later than July 31. Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall - Headmistress    David could not believe it! He had his letter to Hogwarts…but it seemed conflicting! The letter says that school starts today and he needed to respond by July 31st. It was too late to go if he wanted, but ironically, the letter came and it was a spark that enabled David to walk to the fridge and place the letter of acceptance on the fridge and then grab a bite to eat. Dora and Remus told him to go no matter what! Ted gave him the ticket to nowhere and now here was the letter.    David did not need any more signs to make his decision. He will go and see what they can do…if they turn him away, he at least will know if he found the correct place! With time to spare, David does his chores and in the afternoon, practices his three charms: Poculum Reparo, Lumos and Wingardium Leviosa. He begins with reparo as he tries to mend, old, broken things and it takes a lot more concentration to mend the ruins. Lumos was all about saying the words correctly and wingardium leviosa was all about not floating him own self!    Dora was right, he had a talent for charms and spells and worked on making his wand waving more fluid and not so jagged. By 4:20pm, David packed his wand in his coat pocket and slipped on his backpack as he looked back at home. He placed a note in the trailer for his frantic mom and dad to find: Mom, Dad… I have went to Glenfinnan to check out the area. I need to do this and feel that if I don’t, I’ll regret my decision. My reasoning is posted to the refrigerator. Please don’t be mad! I need to sort all this out and will see everyone on the inbound train. David    David looked back at his home and felt the longing to stay, but the compelling nature to leave as he thrived on the thought of his own adventure! Walking down the narrow road of Hillside Estate, he comes to Argyll Terrace and makes a right hand turn to avoid the docks as he does not want to encounter his dad…that would be a terrible idea! Walking through the shaded willows and oaks, he looks at his watch, he still has time. Down Hill road and right on Fassifern road…he can see the train station as he hurries his pace and crosses the dangerous Belford Road via the roundabout to the tune of honking horns and testosterone enriched men yelling: Git a movin yeh lavvy-heided wankstain! David just politely ignored them…they are Scottish!    Across Belford, he walks into the Rail Station as he goes up to the desk and smiles.    “Whaur ye gonnae laddie?” the ticket master asks as it is around 5:26pm.    “Glenfinnan…I have business there to attend…” David says, which is better than saying ‘I am going to see if there is an enchanted school filled with witches and wizards…because that is how I roll!’ David surrenders the ticket that Ted gave him and the ticket master looks at the ticket and stamps it.    “Ah tak' it 'at fowk be waitin'?” he asks as David looks sharp…his Mediterranean heritage showing in his stare.    “Yeah…” David says as ‘your house is your family’ as he is told.    The ticket master pushes back David’s ticket and then looks to the next client as David goes over to a chair and takes a seat. He sighs as he can’t believe he is really doing this! The ticket is in hand, his bag packed and going to a Fantasy Land that science says can’t exist. By 5:50pm a man yells.    “6pm headed via Mallaig boardin' noo!” he yells as a few rise, including David as they walk to the awaiting train as David gets in line, the Conductor punches the tickets. When it is his turn, David hands the ticket to the conductor and he checks that everything is correct and punches the card. Handing the pass back to David, he moves onward to the train as steam billow from under the train. The train is ran off of natural gas as compared to the old steam powered engines of the 1900s. Climbing into the cabin of the train, David walks to his seat and takes a window seat on the left side of the train.    An old couple sits in the seat in front of him and a young couple sits behind him. David looks out the window as the train fills with patrons and then the doors close as the train begins to move. David feels like he could vomit as his nerves are bunched up in a knot. Pass the Lidl Store and pulling away from his home, David listens to the conductor, “Next stop Banavie.” the conductor says as the train moves at a snail’s pace as if his parents were slowing it down. Crossing the river Nevis and passing the town in-between the two rivers, they come to the rapid river Lochy that drains into Loch Eli…the loch he has looked upon for the past 10 years. Passing the ruins of the Old Inverlochy Castle; a 13th century fort that saw many battles between Inverlochy and Fort Williams; he has been there a few times with his mom and dad.    Over the river and passing Lockyside…they roll into Banavie as the conductor calls out the stop and the train slows down and then stops. David looks out the window, this was the furthest he has ever traveled with his family…everything beyond this point will be new country for him. “Next stop, Corpach!” the conductor says as the train exchanges passengers as the train closes the doors with a swish and David looks at the Caledonian Canal…for a few months, this train stopped here when the bridge was mysteriously blown up by terrorists back in 1998 and again in 2006.    Slowly crossing the Caledonian Canal, David looks out the window as the water is hardly moving. The train barely moves at 5 miles an hour as they quickly come into the town of Corpach which is famous for the Corpach Locks. Many people usually disembark as they go to the Treasure Earth to look at gemstones, rocks and fossils. David always wanted to go here, but his mom was too busy with the B&B and dad at the ferry dock. David leans back in the chair as he looks at his cell phone…expecting to have a flurry of angry messages in a few hours!    “Next stop, Loch Eil Outward Bound!” the conductor shouts over the sea of voices as people take their seats as David wonders if he made the correct choice. As the train moves once more, it rolls right on the shore of Loch Eil.    Passing Arjo, a massive lumber mill, a woman walking down the train stops shy of passing David as she looks at the young 11 year old boy. “Mind if I take the other seat?” she asks as David looks at the woman and nods his head as he allows her the seat. She gently plops down on the hard plastic seat and looks out the window. “A shame…” she begins as David looks at her, “…all those trees wasted to lumber!”    “Need lumber if you want to build a house.” David says as the woman nods.    “Where are you headed?” she asks as David does not want to appear shy.    “Glenfinnan.” he says as he turns back to the window, acting as shy as possible. The woman seems to notice that David is not in a talking mood as she looks at the lake when it appears between the trees. The route is long when you don’t want to talk, but David does not like silence. “Where are you headed this fine evening?” he asks as the woman smiles.    “Locheilside…have to...” she pauses as she does not know how to say this “…pick up some things for class tomorrow…” the woman answers as she asks. “Your ascent, it is…”    “Bad?” David answers, as he gets a whole slew of reactions for the way he talks…not to mention his special ‘events!’ The woman shakes her head as she smiles.    “Unique!” she says as she relaxes. “You are not from the island…”    “No…” David says as he looks away, still not confident, “…I think I might be from Croatia.”    “You think?” she asks as this is odd. “You can only ‘be’ or ‘not be’ Croatian.    “I am adopted…I am still learning about who I am…” David says as he realizes he said too much as the woman studies him.    “Now entering Loch Eil Outward Bound.” the conductor says as the train slows and then comes to a stop. David looks at his watch as it is almost 7pm…he is cutting it short! The woman glances at David’s preoccupation.    “Late?” she asks as David covers his watch and looks at the brown hair pulled back and brown glittering eyes staring at him. She has a command of authority about her.    David looks concern as he looks at the water. “Not yet…but I will be cutting it short!” he says as he looks back at the 40 year old woman. “Have you’ve ever been to Glenfinnan?” he asks as for once in this conversation, she looks uncomfortable.    The woman looks down as she quickly tries to find the correct words, “A few times…not much there!” she says as the conductor calls out.    “Locheilside coming up next.” the conductor says as the woman quickly stands and looks at David with a warm smile, but judging eyes.    “Nice to meet you young man?”    “Gill, David Gill…and you?” David says as the woman smiles as she holds out her hand and they shake hands.    “Hermione.” the woman says as she looks at the sign for Locheilside approach and the conductor sings his tune. Hermione turns as she exits the train as David turns back to the window as the passenger’s load the train and an old woman sits across from David as she takes out her needle and thread and works on knitting a kitten.    “Next stop Glenfinnan.” the conductor says as David looks up and knows that his time is almost up. Slowly the train pulls out of Locheilside as the engine pick up speed. David looks out the window; they have come to the end of Loch Eli and entering the pass. Passing over A830, the train has picked up speed and is moving about 30 miles per hour as they begin to climb. The passenger car tilts as they skirt the hills.    Looking ahead, the elevation drops as the train approaches an 1897 bridge called the Glenfinnan Viaduct as the conductor calls out: “Approaching Glenfinnan.” David takes to his feet and slips his pack upon his back as the train goes over the viaduct doing about 10 miles an hour due to the structures age. The bridge towers high above the creek as they exit the bridge and come into town.    The train slows as it climbs to the station. David looks ahead as something odd is happening to the train…the seats and passengers are fading away as the metal twists and warps out of view. David’s eyes widen as he watches this and looks at the passengers as they seem surprisingly calm about all of this! David backs away as the warp rushes over him and he feels like he is floating and then falling as the train is gone! He hits the tracks really hard as he tumbles and rolls over the hard wood, knocking himself out on the platform.    David awakens in pain as he feels the tracks vibrating and looks towards a horrific sound as a bright light beams through the dense fog. A billow of white smoke puffs out of the top of the locomotive as David looks wide eye at a train inbound! For a brief moment, David feels his body lifting into the air as a hand grips his backpack and brings him off the tracks and about two feet off the ground. David would struggle, but something feels broken as he looks at a giant of a man with massive hands and a long graying beard consuming his face.    “Where did ya come from?” he says as he lowers David to the platform. In his other hand is a lantern. David tries to stand on the deck, he hollers in pain as he looks at blood seeping through his pants leg. He stumbles as the giant of a man catches him. “You okay?” he asks as he sees through the dim yellow light, red ooze. “Oh, that don’t look to good…best you take a seat and have me take a look at it.” The man looks to a wicked spirited man with thinning salt-n-pepper hair and a face that looks like he ate a lemon. “Mr. Filch, if you would…” as he hands the old man the light.    David looks around, everything looks ‘different!’ A sunny warm evening has turn into a foggy cold night as the train pulls into the station. The lights of the stage cars flicker with enchantment. The train looks like it should be in a museum! The door’s open as Mr. Filch bark, “Alright, everyone off! Get a stepping, we don’t have all night you know!” he orders…his demeanor nothing like the half-giant. As the bearded man pulls up the pants leg to see how bad it is, David listens to the conversations of kids coming off the train.    “Why isn’t Hagrid here?” a 2nd year student says as she avoids Mr. Filch at all cost.    “Why did the train slam on its brakes?” a 1st year student says as she is frighten and looks around as she is joined with other children from Liverpool.    “Where is your cat? Where is Mrs. Norris?” a 4th year student taunts as he has it in for Mr. Filch for making him do KP duty for a month! David looks at Hagrid, as that name belongs to the half giant who has been so kind to him…even saving his life from a runaway train. David is nearing shock as his mind can’t comprehend this. Where exactly is ‘this?’ he wonders as it is too dark to see any landmarks.    The train engineer comes off the train and walks over to Hagrid and David, “Is everything alright?” he asks as his fear and anger dampen by his concern and joy to see that the young man is alright. The engineer saw it all…the child somehow apparated right on the tracks. Wizards and Witches have the ability to apparate on the Hogsmeade platform…but it isn’t appreciated as it sets off all the schools alarms. Ever since the Battle of Hogwarts…security has been tight.    Hagrid also saw the whole thing and for a moment thought that David might be a Death Eater paying a visit to only find a child flunk to the ground at a mighty clip. David is lucky that he did not break his neck in the process. “He just apparated on the tracks…and for a moment, I thought I saw a train go by!”    “Where am I? Is this Glenfinnan?” David asks as his whole body aches as he looks at the students closely to see that they are dressed in black robes, some with green stashes, blue stashes, red stashes and yellow stashes like his mom’s! Some of the students don’t have colored stashes and are gathered around Mr. Filch. David is in so much distress and pain to realize exactly where he is and does his best not to panic.    “You’re at Hogsmeade.” Hagrid says as he looks at the wound and takes out his wand, “This might sting a bit.” “Vulnera mederi!” he says as the cut seals up and heals right before David’s eyes. “Rather appreciate it if you keep this to yourself, I am not allowed to do magic.” David touches the wound and feels no pain from it. He smiles as he hugs Hagrid and nods.    “Thank you.” David says as he slowly stands upon his feet. His body still sore, but at least he can walk.    Hagrid looks at Mr. Filch, “Argus, you can take the children ahead…we’ll catch up…” as David is slow to move, as the deep injuries still hurt him greatly. With the first year students walking from Hogsmeade and down the gravel road…David and Hagrid move at David’s crippled pace as Hagrid tries to understand David’s story. “So how exactly did you get here?” David looks at Hagrid as he acknowledges, “I know you nearly missed the train…”    “I was on the train…the ScotRail…” I was coming into Glenfinnan as we crossed the bridge.” David explains as he still tries to understand what he just went through and how to avoid that!    “You mean the viaduct?” Hagrid asks as David nods just after. “And then you just apparate onto the tracks?”    “My train disappeared!” David corrects as he still wonders where it went. “Next thing I knew, I was rolling over the ground and then you saved me.”    “And sheer luck if I may say!” Hagrid says as David stops to see off in the distance a building illuminated with fire and candle light. Towers and courtyards, massive complexes and shimmering below a placid black lake that sends a chill down his spine. David is amazed at what he sees…a castle!    “There it is," Hagrid says as he points to the structure "Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft…lead by Headmaster McGonagall.” Hagrid says as David is amazed. Just like the emblem on his letter…a castle! Hagrid looks down at David as the boy just stares at the sight. “Best keep going, McGonagall does not like tardiness.” he says as he helps David climb down into the boat.    David looks for oars to help row…but this boat lacks oars and begins to move on its own at a steady pace across the placid lake. David looks over the edge at the lake and can see his reflection in the water…it looks distorted as if someone else is looking at him.    “Ah, Hagrid…is there anything…unnatural that lives in this lake?” David asks as Hagrid turns to see what David is looking at and sees nothing under the water. For a brief moment, he sees David’s reflection and then the refection of a girl the brightest blue eyes and scales covering her skin. He is surprised and pulls David back!    “Mermaids!?” he says as this is a first. “Have not seen a mermaid since the battle with Voldemort!” Hagrid says as the girl fades away in the light of the castle. “We thought they were all killed in the war…”    David has a brief recollection…a memory from Dora as he recalls the horrors of the battle, “The Battle of Hogwarts!” David says as Hagrid nods with a sad look in his eyes.    “Yeah, lost a good many friends that day!” Hagrid says as he looks away as he does not want David to see him shed a tear.    “Like Nymphadora and Remus!” David says as Hagrid nods.    “Yeah.” he chokes as he rubs his eyes as the boat comes to dock. “Well, out you go…need to get you upstairs for your sorting!”    David shakes his head as this was not what he had planned. “I don’t plan to stay…I have to go home tomorrow…”    “But yer just got here!” Hagrid says as David did not plan on staying. He already knows that his mom and dad will be furious with him…but if he stayed, they’d think that he died!    “No, I have to go home! My mom and dad will be deathly afraid I ran away!” David panics as he does not want to leave the harbor.    Hagrid looks down at David, the story blowing away the fog and becoming clear. The reason David was on those tracks is because he was not accepted to the school…he is a runaway! But a few things don’t make sense to him: How did he located the school when only a few know where to look? The mystery only compacted the fact that many other mysteries have been plaguing the school since the end of the war. Hagrid places a hefty hand on David’s shoulder and softly speaks to him. “Let’s go and see Headmaster McGonagall…she’ll send a letter to your parents telling them where you are.”    David gives up as he isn’t going to argue with a half giant. He’d probably be smashed into jam if he tried!    They slowly climb the stairs as his asthma and injured body does not make the climb any better. 76 stairs to the top, David is huffing and puffing all the way there as Hagrid is concern that he might have to carry the boy the rest of the way…but David makes it and enters the building as he and Hagrid climb another 20 steps to the landing and walk into the Great Hall where the ceremony is already underway.    Hagrid whispers to David. “Best to wait here while I go and speak with the Headmistress…” Hagrid says as David nods and lingers in the back with Mr. Filch and a purring, yellow lamp-eyed, dust colored cat siting at his feet…watching the students as a cat watches a finch. Hagrid skirts the dining room as he sneaks onto the stage and behind the professors. Mrs. McGonagall sees Hagrid come over as he tries to approach her…but not right to do so during the ceremony.    Professor McGonagall in her tall, large black ‘witch’ hat with a spectacles propped upon her nose as she looks at the students. She stands at the podium with the most unpleasant glare compared to that of Mr. Filch that David has learned to avoid. She looks across the many excited faces as she makes her address. “Welcome students to another year at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, before we begin the house sorting ceremony, I have just a few notices for everyone.” she begins as the whole hall goes silent, so silent you could hear a rat pass gas! “The first years, please note that the Dark Forest is strictly forbidden to all students at this time…this includes the Forbidden Forest too! Also to note, the lake is off limits to swimming during the full moon phase!” David takes a seat as his legs give out as he listens, still can’t believe he is actually here! “Mr. Filch has asked me to remind all of you that the southeast towers are strictly out of bounds…mainly the southeast lake tower to all those who do not wish to suffer a terrible curse! Thank you everyone.” Professor McGonagall says as she returns to her seat at the head of the table as Hagrid tries to approach her as respectfully as possible.    A young man in his 40s rises as he looks over the crowd and smiles. Many of the folks in red seem pleased to see him, whereas the folks in green scowl. But respectfully, people look at him like a saint as David cocks his head to get a better look. “Thank you Professor McGonagall,” the young man named Longbottom says as he addresses the crowd. “Typically I do the Sorting Hat Ceremony, but this year I have the pleasure to invite our new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor…” as a woman with brown hair tied back and sharp brown eyes appears on the stage…David looks at her and immediately recognizes her!    It is the woman from the train that he talked to!    Hermione!
Whomped by a Willow
Chapter 1 of Leather and Lace
Words: 3.197  Pairings/Warnings/Rating: Remus x OC, Sirius x OC / Some violence, bodily harm, blood / Teen  Summary:  A chance encounter has a few friends indebted to the Marauders and it's the worst possible thing that could happen to them. Or the best. It's hard to tell when you're being bossed around by incredibly attractive Gryffindors. As time passes, the girls grow fond of the Marauders - but they each have their own secrets and their own demons. Can they get over their insecurities and fears in order to embrace what life at Hogwarts has to offer them? AO3 | FFN
“Unbelievable,” Goldie whispered as she pushed a handful of curls out of her face to study the map. “Did you get us lost?”
“Me?” Catlin, the oldest of the lot, gasped in defense, “You're the one leading us.”
“Yeah, with a map you made,” she shot back.
“Shut up, both of you!” Evelyn, the redhead, spoke up, annoyed, “We're gonna get caught.”
“I can't get caught,” said Goldie, not the least bit of panic in her voice. “I have too much stuff to do. I have to take photos at the Quidditch game this weekend.”
“Yeah and she,” Evelyn jerked her thumb back at the second girl, “is a potential prefect. This will go on her record – if they keep records in this place.”
“Wait,” said Catlin, “I think I hear someone coming – hide!”
All three took off separately, heading for the shadows of the castle, finding refuge under bushes or against the corners of stone pillars. Waiting with bated breath, they listened closely. They could hear soft murmuring and footsteps, but couldn't see anything yet. Peeking out from their hiding spots, they squinted into the courtyard lit up by the half moon overhead. The footsteps and the conversation were getting louder, but they still couldn't see anyone. Perhaps whoever it was, was above them – walking along the open air corridors the three girls had just used.
Finally the footsteps stopped, but the talking didn't. They could make out what was being said as the voice carried on the still night.
“Be careful, James – you're stepping on my Padfeet.”
“Oh, shut up, Sirius,” came the reply. “I am not. It's Peter.”
“I'm not! Ow – you've just elbowed me in the eye!”
“There's not enough room under here. James, you should really do something about this.”
“Do what? I'm not a seamstress. Besides, what's it matter? We're out anyways.”
All three girls watched in amazement as suddenly – out of thin air – a group of boys appeared. The one in the middle folded what looked like a blanket over his arm and adjusted his glasses.
“Right,” he said, “now that we've got that all sorted … where's Remus?”
“Old Moony is probably waiting for us,” said the boy with shoulder-length black hair. “It's not a full moon yet so he won't be in the Shrieking Shack.”
“This is what happens when we sneak out separately,” the glasses-wearing boy sighed.
Catlin, the potential prefect who felt she was going to pass out from holding her breath, sat up a little straighter against the castle wall. The Shrieking Shack? That's exactly where her group was going. She glanced around to find her friends; even though she couldn't see them, she knew they were thinking the same thing. What were these boys doing, going out to the Shrieking Shack? Or, rather, not going there? It sounded like they made a habit of it, but only around the full moon. Were the ghosts extra active around then?
Silently, they watched as the three boys headed off into the distance to look for their missing friend. The girls slowly came out of hiding, meeting together in the shadow of the ancient castle.
“Evelyn,” whispered Catlin, “who do you think they were?”
“Other students,” she replied.
“Oh, jeez, thanks. Where do you think they're going?”
“It sounded like they were looking for someone,” said Goldie, finally fishing a bobby pin out of her pocket and pinning her curls back. “Their friend, maybe?”
“Did you hear what they said?” Catlin kept her voice low but she felt excitement bubble up inside.
“Yeah,” nodded Evelyn. “They said something about the Shrieking Shack.”
“Are they going to be there too, then?” Goldie asked.
“No,” said Catlin. “They said whoever they were looking for wouldn't be there.”
“So where are they going?” Goldie watched the boys disappear into the dark forest.
“I don't know,” Catlin sighed, “but I think we should get going. If we wait around here, we're gonna get caught.”
“We've already gotten outside,” Goldie replied, grinning. “We'll be fine.” She held up the carefully drawn, but incomplete, map in front of her face, stepping out into the light to see it better.
“Can't we just use Lumos?” Evelyn held up her wand.
“Once we're farther away,” Goldie said, tracing a line along the map with her index finger. “Are we here? Do we pass the West Tower? Wait … which tower is this?”
“There are so many towers,” Evelyn grumbled. “You just need four, if that.”
“I'll enchant it so it lights up itself,” Catlin said. “Then we won't need to use our wands. We don't need to go all the way to the West Tower, but we can use it as a reference point.”
“You should enchant it so it shows where we are,” Evelyn suggested, looking over at the map, pointing. “Are we there? Isn't that this corridor here?”
“No,” Goldie said, already knowing Evelyn was horrid with directions and maps. “Look around and see if you can find a landmark -”
“Here, we're here,” Catlin interrupted, poking her finger to a spot on the map. “That tree,” she indicated to a smudge on the paper, “is there.” Pointing to a large tree ahead of them, she said, “I know where we are. I made the map. I've triple checked it. Besides I remember that tree because it looks like it's waving and I thought it was friendly – so I put it on the map.”
All three looked over at the tree and indeed, it had a twisting branch that curved upwards and spreading twigs that looked like nimble fingers. They trembled in the autumn breeze, giving off the impression of hand gently waving salutations at the group.
“Everything looks different at night,” Evelyn noted, “but at least you have your tree. He does look friendly. Have you given him a name?”
“Not yet. I couldn't think of a tree pun.”
“Ashley. Elmer. Mister Birch.”
“Okay,” Goldie said, “then that means we need to go that way to get to the Shrieking Shack.”
“Let's go then,” Evelyn said eagerly. “We're wasting time and I'm out of tree puns.”
They headed off in what they assumed to be the correct direction, keeping close together and casting hurried glances to keep watch. Once they were into the trees and the moonlight was obscured by the overhead branches, they each took out their wands.
“Lumos,” they said in unison and soon they were surrounded in blue-white light that pushed shadows into hiding under the long branches of pine trees. Huddled over the map, they figured out which way to go.
“I think we head in that direction,” Catlin said. “This is harder than I thought.”
“Did you bring anything to amend the map?” Goldie asked.
Catlin rummaged through her pocket and pulled out a jar of black ink and a quill. “I guess this will do. I brought pencils over the summer but someone snatched them. Back to using quills.”
“I don't hear anything, do you?” Evelyn lifted her wand higher, away from the group. “Isn't there supposed to be, you know, shrieking?”
Goldie folded the map. “Maybe the ghosts are sleeping,” she teased. “I guess we'll find out once we get there.”
The girls marched through the trees and down sloping hills. Their wands lit the way, blue lights bobbing around in the dark.
“I don't think I've been this far from the castle,” Evelyn admitted. “I mean, aside from field trips to Hogsmeade.”
“Are you sure there's an entrance to the Shrieking Shack here?” Goldie waved her arm around, shining light all around. “Not that I don't trust you, but it's all … field! And trees.”
“Yes, I'm pretty sure,” Catlin said. “I overheard Dumbledore mention it to Madam Pomfrey. I'm pretty certain it's by a tree ...”
“Did they happen to mention what kind of tree?” Goldie looked around. It was beginning to seem a bit hopeless. They only had so much time before they had to sneak back inside and get to bed.
“No – but … It'd have to be big enough to hide it, right?”
“We're surrounded by pine trees,” Goldie observed, pointing with her wand and sending light upwards. “All of them are big enough to hide anything.”
“What's an entrance to the Shrieking Shack doing on Hogwarts property anyway?” Evelyn used her wand's light to inspect a tree that had lost most of its lower branches. “I mean, the Shack is all the way in Hogsmeade, isn't it? What's it got to do with Hogwarts?”
“I don't know,” Goldie murmured as she checked out another tree, circling around it to check for a secret door. “But there are ghosts in the castle, so maybe there were some really bad ghosts that were haunting the school so they forced them to move? You know, for students' safety?”
“According to the villagers, the ghosts are really violent.” Catlin shuddered involuntarily, but she couldn't tell if it was from the idea of vengeful ghosts or the breeze running through the trees. “People say they can hear them screaming and tearing apart the inside of the Shack.”
Evelyn frowned as she bent over to pull pine needles out of her shoes. “Can ghosts do that? Tear things up, I mean? I guess if they're corporeal – but they're not, you know, living. All the ghosts at Hogwarts just float around and go through walls. I've never seen them actually interact with anything. Hmm … maybe that's why they moved them to the Shrieking Shack. Not just because they're violent, but because they could actually hurt someone. Ooh, that's scary!”
“Well,” Goldie huffed, crossing her arms, “they've certainly done a fantastic job of hiding this supposed entrance. There are hundreds of trees on this property, and we can't check them all tonight. And there's no way we can mark the ones we've already checked! This is going to take ages.”
“That – wait! Did you hear that?” Evelyn turned around, holding out her wand. “I – I heard something. Do you think a teacher found us?”
“No way,” Goldie stammered, turning to face where Evelyn was looking. “We were so careful! Maybe it's a squirrel.”
“It sounded bigger than a squirrel,” Evelyn whispered. “Like, teacher-sized or something.”
A noise to the right grabbed their attention and they spun towards it, three wands raised in defense. Light poured over the creature that had made the noise – a huge stag, standing just a few meters away, staring at them. Pine needles and leaves crunched under its hooves as it took a step forward, its huge black eyes shining eerily in the light.
Gasping in surprise, they hurriedly shuffled backwards, wide-eyed.
“That's the biggest deer I've ever seen,” Goldie said.
“It's going to stomp us to death,” Catlin concluded. “Or stab us with its antlers. That's not how I want to die. I mean – I haven't given it much thought, but I just decided that's not the way I wanna go.”
“You're the one who wants to be a magizoologist,” Goldie said, nudging Evelyn in the side. “Can't you … speak to it or something?”
“Deers aren't magical creatures. Besides – I'm not a deer whisperer!”
“Can't you do something? It's – it's looking at us. You're always reading that Wonderful Beasts book, aren't you?” Goldie gripped her wand tighter. “What do we do? Stun it?”
“It's Fantastic Beasts, and you can't use a spell on an animal,” Evelyn said quickly. “Maybe if we turn off our lights it'll go away …” Slowly, hesitantly, she lowered her wand. “Nox.” A third of the light disappeared.
“Nox,” Goldie echoed and her wand went out. Now only Catlin's light remained. She felt frightened either way. Having the light meant that this massive deer could see them – but it was some comfort  knowing they wouldn't stumble around blindly. Plus not having any light would leave them in the dark with the beast still close to them. Could deers see in the dark? Just as she was about to put out the light, they heard something move behind them. Turning on their heels, Catlin's wand illuminated a huge black dog, standing even close than the deer was. Fearless, it stepped closer and bared its teeth. Out of some combination of fear and stupidity, the girls started screaming.
“Nox!” Catlin shouted, leaving them in nothing but the light of a half moon. Suddenly all logical spells and responses left them and they took off running. They were nearly blind as their eyes adjusted to the dark.
“Is it following?” Catlin shouted, clutching her wand.
“Keep running!” Goldie sprinted forward, nearly dropping the map as she ducked between two trees.
Evelyn said nothing, conserving her breath for running away and not useless commentary. They broke through the trees and came out into a clearing.
Catlin glanced over her shoulder to see if they were being followed. She could barely see anything, but she was convinced she heard footsteps – or rather, pawsteps – running after them. She turned back around and saw too late that she was in a collision course with a massive tree. She ran straight into it with a solid thunk and her legs folded instantly, her head slamming against the cold earth when she collapsed. Groaning, she blinked her eyes open to look at the branches above. She gingerly touched her nose and felt blood running down her lip.
“Catlin!” Evelyn shouted, changing course and running for her friend. Hearing the commotion, Goldie also diverted from her path.
The huge black dog jumped in front of Evelyn, baring its teeth again and growling. She stumbled back, feeling her heart leap to her throat. Any way she tried to run, the dog was there, its fur bristling up on the back of its neck. When she got too close, it made like it was going to bite her and its jaw snapped shut with a startling sound.
Goldie got a few feet closer before the deer galloped in her way, looming over her and pawing at the ground with its large hooves. She skidded to a halt, holding out her wand.
“I'll hex you!” she shouted. “I don't care if you're a deer!”
When she tried to get around, the deer lowered its head so the girl was faced with long, branched antlers.
Catlin slowly sat up, rubbing at the immense headache that throbbed throughout her entire skull. She watched the branches above her slowly start to twist and swing. At first she thought it was double vision from an oncoming concussion, but she blinked away stray tears and saw that the branches were actually moving. She watched as they swiveled and wrenched down, cutting through the air.
“Oh my gosh,” Goldie realized, watching as the clubbed branches tried to take out whatever had disturbed the trunk. “It's a Whomping Willow.” She tried to run around the deer but it kept throwing its head towards her, threatening to impale her with any number of the sharp ends of its antlers. Frustrated, she just shouted over the noise of the groaning tree. “Cat! You have to get out of there!”
Catlin fell back to avoid the tangled vines above and flipped onto her stomach. She tried to army crawl away but she was pushed back by the branches punching through the air. She wasn't nearly fast enough to run out of harm's way before another branch could swoop down and strike her, and there was nothing else she could do. Throwing her hands over her head, she nestled into the grass, hoping someone would get her out of there.
She felt something brush against her arm and looked over. A large rat scurried past and Catlin shrieked, throwing herself back from it. The rat scrambled under the roots and disappeared. The tangled edge of a branch rushed past Catlin, knocking her over and leaving several long stripes across her face. She went to grab her face, but screamed and let go when her fingers knocked against the bridge of her nose. Kneeling over, she let the blood drip down into the grass. It didn't help much and she started to feel lightheaded. She could still hear her friends screaming at her to get away from the tree. Groggily, she tried to stand up but, to her dismay, she was buffeted by another branch that caught her arms and legs and she spiraled down hard, landing on her back. For a moment all sound ceased and everything went black. When she regained her vision, she was staring up at the sky.
Catlin barely noticed that the branches suddenly stopped moving above her, the tree seemingly frozen. All she noticed was that the shaggy black dog had a hold of her coat by the shoulder and was dragging her across the field. She flailed uselessly, too scared to actually fight off the animal. Once they were a safe distance from the tree, the dog let her go. Goldie finally managed to run past the deer while Evelyn ran up to the girl lying sprawled on the ground.
Goldie stuck out her wand and shouted, “Everte Statum!” A burst of orange light shot out of her wand and the dog flew backwards, tumbling along the ground. They took the opportunity to grab Catlin and haul her to her feet, dragging her towards the castle.
Catlin planted her feet down and helped to move along, and soon they were able to jog up the hills, through the trees, and to the castle. Out of breath, they fell onto the stone steps, collecting their thoughts.
“That was the worse idea we've ever had,” Evelyn gasped.
“It was terrifying,” Goldie agreed. “Why are those animals so big?”
“I don't know. Magic?” Catlin wiped blood on her dress. “Too bad that tree wasn't as friendly as that one,” she motioned to the curved tree that continued to wave at them in the night breeze.
“Maybe it was,” Evelyn said, “and it just got angry because you face planted into it instead of shaking its hand – er, branch.”
“I think I may've broken my nose.” Catlin reached into her jacket to grab a tissue. Her eyes widened and she searched through all her pockets, patting them down.
“What is it?” Goldie watched as Catlin frantically searched the area around her.
“My wand!”
“What about it?”
“I can't find it!”
“Where would it be?”
“I don't know! I -” Catlin looked over to the distance, the direction they had just come from. “Oh no.”
“Wait, seriously?” Evelyn stood beside her. “You dropped it? Back there? Well you're never getting it back.”
“What am I supposed to say? A dog ate my wand?” She winced and touched her forehead.
“Maybe we can get it tomorrow,” Goldie offered. “Let's get inside. Do you need to see Madam Pomfrey?”
“No … I think I'll be okay. If I feel bad tomorrow then I'll see her.”
“Come on.” Goldie led the two girls inside, cautiously guiding them through the dark corridors, avoiding any teachers doing their rounds.
Far away by the Whomping Willow, the large rat found a wand lying in the grass and picked it up in its teeth, scuttling along after the black dog and impossibly large stag.
CHARMS | September 19th | Lesson #5 | Lumos Solem, lumos Numerosa
Concentration
Today we will be looking at another of the components you need to be aware of when casting a spell. This component, called concentration, affects spells differently from the wand movement or incantation. It is the act of centering your mind and centering your spell’s effects on the target in order to make the spell happen.
Concentration is a component that is not necessarily crucial in every spell. Saying the incantation and performing the wand movement for the Wand-Lighting Charm, for instance, will cause the tip of your wand to illuminate without the need to concentrate heavily on a target. No matter how you use the spell, it will affect only the tip of your wand, and is essentially untargeted. Many of the spells we have covered, such as the Levitation Charm and the Locomotion Charm, require you to concentrate on the target you are casting the spell upon and also concentrate upon the effect you are intending to produce. Without the proper concentration, you might find yourself levitating the table instead of the chair you had intended to levitate. You may find that, instead of directing the trunk you had intended to charm with the Locomotion Charm, you are moving your bed around and it has unfortunately crashed into the trunk you had meant to move.
Concentration is also something that, unlike with incantations or wand movements, you cannot avoid if a spell requires it. You will never reach a point where you can successfully cast the Levitation Charm upon an object without concentrating upon it, even if you only need a minimal amount of concentration. In this way, concentration is the shaping of your will toward a specific goal. Lose that concentration and you find that, at best, your spell targets something you had not intended. At worst, the magic is unleashed in an uncontrolled burst from the tip of your wand, its energy undirected.
The hardest part of successful concentration is that your mind must be relatively clear at the moment you are casting a spell. If you're hungry and thinking of the delicious food being prepared in the Great Hall, your attempt to levitate a chair might result in you levitating the leftovers on the table, even if you were giving some attention to the chair. A great way to practice focusing is through meditation. The act of clearing your mind of thoughts and concerns can take considerable effort, but in the long run it will make you a much better spellcaster. You also must avoid letting stray thoughts get in the way. If you are trying to perform the Severing Charm and you suddenly worry about cutting too deeply, you might find that this is exactly what happens. It is important that you focus only upon what your spell is supposed to do and upon what it is supposed to affect.
At the moment your spell is supposed to take effect, if required, your concentration must be solely upon the task of casting the spell. If a friend is in danger and you need to cast the Stunning Spell, but you are thinking about your friend and not where the spell could go, you could end up stunning them instead.
Remember that concentration directs the effect of your spell, which means that your concentration may not always be on the object as a whole. It may also require visualization of the effect to properly direct the flow of magic, and will occasionally require additional thoughts or emotions. You also don't want to just concentrate haphazardly upon whatever you're trying to charm. If you're trying to use the Mending Charm but you just casually wave your wand in a general direction without really concentrating upon what you're trying to mend and visualizing its unbroken appearance, you may find that it was only partially put back together or mended with extra pieces you hadn't meant to fuse together!
Spell Modifiers
Next we will be discussing spell modifiers. Now, a modifier is a word or short phrase added to the end of a spell to modify the target or effect. The Locomotion Charm, for example, can be modified by including the name of the target. We'll be looking at two spells today that have what we will call spell modifiers. Keep in mind that not all spells can be modified. The Levitation Charm, for example, is no easier regardless of what you say after you complete the incantation. Some spells have different behavior depending upon what modifier you use. As you'll see in this lesson, the Sunlight Charm and the Dancing Lights Charm are both modifications of the Wand-Lighting Charm, Lumos.
The Sunlight Charm
In most cases a steady, half-decent light is all a witch or wizard needs. The typical Wand-Lighting Charm allows you to light the tip of your wand, move it as you want, cast other spells, and then counter the charm with a single, simple counterspell. Sometimes, however, it's useful to have a brighter light that's aimed in a particular direction. Instead of a candle casting light in every direction, the Sunlight Charm is like a very powerful flashlight.
Incantation: Lumos Solem (‘LOO-mos so-LEM’) Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop ending with the wand pointed toward the target. Willpower: Low to very high; determines color and intensity of light. Concentration: High; the target of the light.
The charm is affected by several factors. The amount of willpower put into the spell determines how powerful the effect is. The spell requires concentration to precisely target the beam and keep the spell from simply flickering out just after being cast.
Depending upon how much willpower you put into the spell, the beam will range in intensity from a faint white like a flashlight to a brilliant light golden yellow at its maximum. Unlike with the Wand-Lighting Charm, this charm does not turn scarlet if over-charged. Care must still be taken, however, as an intense beam can be a danger to your vision or the vision of others. You should never point your wand toward your own face and never point this spell directly at another’s face either.
This charm is a great way to practice your ability to concentrate. If you cast the spell but are not concentrating upon maintaining the spell to achieve the desired effect, the light will quickly fade out. The spell will only last five to six seconds no matter how hard you concentrate, but if you don't concentrate enough, the spell won't last for even a second. Managing all of the requirements to cast the spell are what make it a great spell to practice with.
The Dancing Lights Charm
The Sunlight Charm allows you to cast a bright beam of directed light, but the Dancing Lights spell allows you to conjure several smaller, floating lights. This experimental charm is great practice for concentrating on multiple things at once. Each orb casts about as much light as a candle. You don’t have to focus on a particular target, though you will need to mentally direct the orbs toward a particular area. Concentration is a key component of the spell.
Incantation: Lumos Numerosa (‘LOO-mos Noom-air-O-sa’) Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop, then several rapid counter-clockwise loops. Willpower: None Concentration: High; concentration should be maintained on all the orbs, and determines how many can be created.
The caster must concentrate upon each orb that is conjured. The number of orbs that can be conjured by the spell is limited by the caster's ability to concentrate upon them, though the most skilled caster can only maintain about a dozen at a time. Preliminary testing has determined that a First Year should be able to conjure three to five orbs at a time.
The caster must also concentrate to move the orbs and keep them from simply winking out of existence. Keeping them clustered together is the easiest way to move them all at the same time, though an experienced spellcaster can control them on a more individual level. Typically the caster must choose between more orbs or more control, though practicing concentration increases both of them.
Smush Spiders
Spiders (the really tiny kind) will chase you, grab on to you, then hang from your uniform. They don’t cause any damage, but if you just want to get rid of them, walk on them, or if you want to smush them faster, jump on them. Sometimes, the spider will stop moving then vanish.
After you’ve done a lesson, visit that classroom again later. For example, after the Charms class, visit that classroom when you can. Here is what you get if you do:
Transfiguration Classroom: Bertie Botts BeansDefence Against The Dark Arts: Bertie Botts BeansPotions Classroom: Wiggentree Bark, Flobberworm MucousCharms Classroom: Wizard CardHerbology Classroom: (Outside: Bertie Botts Beans, Wizard Card) (Inside: Nothing)
Teleport
When you are in ghost mode, use the [Cursor keys] and Mouse to move around. When your view is above a place that you want to be at, press [Delete]. If done correctly, you should appear above that spot. This is very helpful in a challenge, since you can go through walls. Note: You must be in the same area. You cannot teleport from the inside to the outside.
See Mrs. Hooch Flinch
Go to the Flying Court and fly near Mrs. Hooch, the flying teacher. Fly as close as you can to her. She will put her broom up in front of her face and try to protect herself from you slamming into her.
Greenhouse: Wizards Card
After talking to Fred and George, go to the right of the greenhouse and cast Alohomora the hedge separating it from the wall. Follow the passage to a small courtyard. Cast Alohomora on the statues to get the Card.
Forbidden Forest Spiders
The spiders in the forest act as follows:
Tiny Black: Show you the pathBig Green: Jumpers (jump, run away, and jump again)Big Red: Flingers (they spit)Big White: Flingers (spit paralyzing venom)Big Multicolor: Possible Jumper/Flinger mix.
Transformation Spell
After you acquire the spell and return to the main room, use it to get across the room on the other side of the gargoyle. You will need to use the hardly visible ledges to cross. Hang off the wall ledge to escape nearing ghosts, and push down the slabs to make a bridge. Once this is done, you will have to fight the gargoyle. It is recommended that you get on the right staircase, halfway up. Then, use the spell on the last stone and the door will open.
Defeating The Giant Mother Spider 2
While fighting it, you may notice little sacks being dropped and suspended by webbing. Shoot them down with Flapendo and collect health and Bean power ups from Hedwig.
Defeating The Giant Spider
To defeat the Giant Spider in the Dark Forest, circle around him and cast Rictosempra. He will not shoot any spider webs at you.
Defeating The Washing Machine
Make sure you dodge it when it moves. When it opens its mouth, keep Flipendoing it. Note: It only gets hurt when the door is open. Repeat this and it will die down quickly.
Defeating The Giant Mother Spider
To get to it, use your Lumos spell to light the floor and follow the trail of spiders. Unlike the book, the spiders that are not normal size will try to kill you. Attack them with Incendio. When fighting the Giant Mother Spider, do not try to hurt the spider itself. Instead, use your Incendio spell to burn the web it has attached to the various trees. When done, it will fall into the pit and you will slip in after it. In here, just run around until it rears its head and exposes its soft under-belly. It is the only part that is susceptible to second level magic. Note: It is best to not charge and use rapid firing to get a little extra damage.
Defeating The Bookcase
Flippendo him in the front repeatedly until you see him fall. You will then be able to pull the box to the end. Then, jump from pillar to pillar and you find the spell book. It will allow you to destroy Green Goop-A-Goop. To avoid being hit by the Bookcase, after you Flippendo it, it will start to shake. Run behind another bookshelf and wait until you see two groups of books go by, or listen for two swishes. Then, run back and repeat the process.
Secret From Hedwig
When you see Hedwig, do Alahomara to him and he might unlock a secret. This does not always happen, but does work sometimes.
Defeating Aragog
To defeat Aragog, the final big spider, use one of the strafe keys (A and D) and the mouse. While strafing, click the Left Mouse Button repeatedly to keep hitting the spider. It will not do much damage, but you will not get hit very often.
Defeating The Whomping Willow
When the Whomping Willow starts to pound into the ground, hide in the corner where you entered its lair. The shock wave cannot reach you in here, unless you stray too far from it. Should you get hit, you should have refilled your potion Vile before you entered. Also, Hedwig will drop Cauldron Cakes and Beans for your aid. Note: Rapid firing technique is recommended. Lock on to the limbs after they finish pounding and fire a quick shot, then wait to lock onto the Willow’s Eye. Then, fire repeatedly until it stops hurting him before running back to your hiding hole.When battling the Whomping Willow, Flippendo his hands when he punches them down, then run to where Ron is located and Flippend near him. He will lose some of his life bar (bottom right). Keep repeating this until he starts throwing rocks at you. Dodge them by running left. Then, Flippendo his hand very quickly and Flippendo the location near Ron. He should be defeated after that. When fighting the Whomping Willow, strike either hand with the Flipendo spell when you see the light on his hand. He will start moving his hands around. When he does. strike the eye in the center of the tree. Keep repeating this process and you will defeat the Willow. Watch the bar in the top right corner that will tell you the Willow’s SP.
Personal Requests And Notice Board
The Notice Board in the Gryffondor common room usually gives a location, but higher up as you near completion they start to give vague clues, such as “Could be anywhere on grounds”. With personal requests, they do not ever really give you a clue, except the first one. However, the items are near the area in about a two acre search range.
Finding Lost Items
When in doubt, check Hagrid’s Hut. Many of the lost items end up there.
3 Roots Needed
Search the left side of Hagrid’s Hut, by the Herbology Center. From there, they all scatter (much like Neville’s china set) behind Hagrid’s Hut towards the Forbidden Forest. The person that wants these will give you the key to the Confiscated Items Room (six more cards and a bag to hold 200 Bertie Bott’s Every Flavored Beans).
Lost Badge
Found on the Broom Flying Field, towards Hagrid’s Hut and the Whomping Willow (still inside the Flying Court).
Lost Newspaper Article
Search the left side of Hagrid’s Hut. Note: “Left” being if you were looking from his front door towards the castle (the side next to the Herbology Center).
Lost Wizards Hat
Found in a small patch of trees towards the Quiddich Court.
Neville’s Crockery
Can be found close to the Flying Court and Hagrid’s Hut. Up on a roof will be a multitude of his china set. Go about a fifteen to twenty five second flying trip from Neville (heading back).
Secretive Dragon Scale Gloves
The elusive gloves are by the lake, but not on land. They can be found just outside the Broom Flying lessons field, on the lakeside. You will notice a long strip is down low. On the far end are five torches (light with Incendio to get a Wizards Card), and in the middle somewhere should be the gloves.
Telescope
Located on the tower where you enter to go in the main entryway. It is on the far left.
Alohamora Spell
When you have 80 Bertie Bot Every Flavored Beans, go to the reading room where you buy things from Fred and George in the Griffindor House. Percy will try to stop you. if you try to go during the day, Fred and George will not be there, except on the last day of school. When you go in, you have to go to the opposite side of the table. There will be a book. Go up to it and Fred will say that it is 80 Bertie Botts. If you have enough, he will say you can go mostly anywhere in Hogwarts. This spell will only work on some doors and chests.
Gnome Tossing
When you want to throw a Gnome far, try to get a little close to the leaves by the pond and between a fern. It is a few of steps away from Fred and George. Start spinning, then when you are going fast, let go. The gnome should go far. Note: This may require some practice. Do not spin too long or you will get dizzy.
Hogwarts: A History Book
When you climb on the book shelves, hit the flying books two times and they will fall. You can now jump onto the next shelf. When you make it to the book, it does not matter if you die — you will be put back up onto the ledge.
Hermione’s Book Quest
After you have defeated the Book Shelf on your quest to find the book for Hermione, grab the block and take it all the way to the front of the room in front of the first book shelf in a row of book cases. When you are on the first book case, you will see flying books staying in one place. Cast the Hand spell on them and jump across.
Finding The Ghoul Book
Go through the tunnel with two star bushes that is near the flying field with Ms. Hooch. Then, fly to the left and you will find a ledge that has the book on it.
Finding The Holidays With Hags Book
Go to the door to the Whomping Willow and get on your broom. Fly in a straight line from the door and stay low to the ground. The book will be in a corner at the wall.
Key To Confiscated Items Storeroom
Look on the grounds for people ho will ask you to do things for them. After you have done something for everyone, the last person will give you the key and tell you where the Confiscated Items storeroom is located.
Fighting With Expelliarmus
When in one of the few battles with Hogwart’s students (just the Slytherin Gang, all others leave you alone), let them make the first shot and bounce it back. Just as you do, use your Flapendo with a quarter to half second charge to knock them back, thus trapping them with two spells to knock back, which they can never manage. Note: Beware, just as you finish casting Flapendo (depending on distance), you will be forced to use your Expelliarmus almost instantly.
Expelliarmus Challenge
Use your spell that cuts down tapestries and ropes on the spiked ball. Walk up close to the edge and hold your trigger button, charge up for a half second and cast. Note: If you throw the imps into the fiery pits, they will die and you do not have to worry about them. Likewise, if you throw them all away you cannot put them into the cages to get out; but when all are indeed gone, they respawn from that hatch in the wall at the first ramp.
Unfair Slytherin House Cup Victory
If on the final day of term the House Points are tied, when you talk to Hermione or Ron they will say that you definitely have enough House Points to defeat Slytherin, However, when you go into the Great Hall, Dumbledore will give the House Cup to Slytherin.
Escaping The Slytherins
When you are in the Slytherin common room and need to get out, hide behind the pillar on the right side and wait for the girl to pass. Next, go into the room on your left and stay behind the door. The girl will return and look around. She will not see you. After she walks away, run and jump to avoid being captured. As soon as you exit the room, go to your left. Once there, start running to the door to avoid being captured. This may take a few attempts, as there are many people waiting by the door. Run very fast instead of creeping there — the Slytherins do not catch on very quickly that you are there.To escape the Slytherin, you need to first open a painting in the painting room before the common room. It is the second one the left. When avoiding Slytherins, run to the library that you will find and go to the painting (behind). Open it, and it will be much easier because you will be almost at the end.
Escape Uppergraders
When you are going to get caught by an Uppergrader and he uses the Locomotomortis spell, use the shield spell to stop it and run away. If done correctly, he will say “Did any one see him?”.
Avoiding Ginny And Mrs. Weasley
Once you enter Diagon Alley, there is a way to avoid Ginny and Mrs. Weasly. Stay against the left wall and you will be able to avoid them. Also, when you finish getting all of Ginny’s lost things, stay against the opposite wall of where they are (opposite of Florrish and Blotts) and remain close to the wall.
Avoiding Ghosts
When you do not want to be hit by ghosts and lose all your items (Balloons, Beans, and sometimes Stink Pellets) just stand on the ledge until the specter nears you. Tap the controls so that you will fall and catch the ledge. When you are hanging, they cannot hit you and cause your items to go flying. Another way to avoid the ghosts and keep from losing your collected items is to use Lumos. Hold Down to maximize the spell. The ghosts will not hit you when the light is on. Sometimes this requires careful timing because you are trying to search and collect items at the same time.
Sneaking Around At Night
When sneaking around at night, you need to get by many of the prefects. When you need to get by them, simply crawl under the bookcase to the left of the portrait that leads to the Griffondore common room. It leads through a secret passage that takes you to the fourth floor. When sneaking around and you do not want to walk slowly, you can use various objects and spells to distract the prefects. Stink Pellets are not too reliable, but the non-explodable luminous balloons work well. As for spells, try Flapendo.
Stink Pellets
After you leave the Burrow and have finished collecting Ginny’s lost supplies, go around casting Perfect Flipendo’s on all of the objects you can find. Collect the Sickles, if they appear. Once you have enough Sickles, enter Gambol and Japes. Purchase a 10-pack of Stink Pellets. These can be useful when facing enemies, or if you are caught by a Prefect after hours.
Lower Bean Price
When you ask a student to trade a wizard card and he or she asks you for too many Beans, click on “No” move some steps back and ask again. The quantity of beans will be reduced.
Easy Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans
When you exit of the Gryffindor Tower notice the object in the corner. Hit it with Flipendo and three Beans will appear. Go around the corner and walk at least three steps away. Return and cast Flipendo again to get three more Beans. Repeat this to get as many Beans as needed. Use the Nimbus 2000 Broomstick and fly above Hogwarts. Fly through the rings to get free Beans. A blue ring gives 10 Beans, a yellow ring gives 1 Bean, a red ring gives 3 Beans and a green ring gives 2 Beans. When you go outside of Hogwart’s, go to the tree where you walk through a long hallway and Flapendo it to get as many Beans as needed.Once you get the key to the Confiscated Items room, go in there and get your six Wizard Cards and your 200 Bean Bag. After you run out of Beans or are low on them, go back to the Confiscated Items room. The chest that had the 200 Bean Bag, is closed again. Reopen the chest and you will get a refill of 200 Beans. When you have the key to the Confiscated Items room, just save and reload and the 200 Bean Bag will be back. You can repeat this every time you need more Beans. Go to the Dueling Room and walk down the stairs. There should be someone that is standing to the left of the room. Go up to him and duel him. When you have defeated him, there will be another person standing next to him. Keep defeating the people until you reach the last person. When you have defeated the last person, duel him repeatedly until you have the desired amount of Beans. If the last person is too difficult to defeat, then go to the second to last person (to the left of the last person), and duel that person repeatedly.To get unlimited Beans when you are in Hogwarts, go to the Second Floor Charms and Library area, located off the main staircase (preferably at night). As you enter this area, go into the second door on your left, then take the first door on your right (being careful of the Fire Crab). Once in here, there are three wooden boxes that release Beans when they are Flippendoed. They will release about ten from each box. When they are dry, exit this room then immediately re-enter it. Hit the boxes again. Continue doing this until you are full of Beans and return at anytime to fill up again. On the seventh floor of the grand staircase, go into the Arithmacy class and hit the small globe three times to get three Beans, Walk out and in again. Repeat this until you have enough. Then, go to Fred and George’s shop and buy and Bertie Botts Bean Bag to be able to get more beans. Keep collecting Beans to afford anything desired. Note: Watch out for the ghost that haunts the class. Do go near her or risk losing some Beans.When almost at the end of the game, go to the entrance of the gate. You will see a boy there. Do his mission and you will get Beans.
Deduct Points From Slytherin
When Hermione changes you into Goyle, go out at night and try to get caught by the Prefects (the people that patrol the halls). When you do, Slytherin will get 5 house points deducted. You may repeat this process a few times, but after awhile this will stop.
Professor Flitwick’s Incedio Challenge
Once you get the Incedio Spell, return to the main room and make sure the two pillars are down. Go into one of them and switch the flame direction so that the flames are both are on one side of the room. On the other side, use Incedio to light the pigs and Flapendo to point them up to lift the platform; then again on the other one. Run quickly to the switch by the exit. If successful the door, will be unlocked halfway. You will need to do likewise with the other side. Note: You do not have to charge at all — this gives you a few extra needed seconds.
Get Wizard Cards
Head over to the Burrow. Now go to Diagon Alley. You should see chests there for the Wizard Cards. Do the games, especially Broom Racing to get the cards.
Get Bertie Beans
Exit Gryffindor Tower. Hit the object in the corner with Flipendo to get 3 more beans. Walk away and come back and do it again to get more beans.
Quidditch Tips
These Quidditch Tips with *s next to them do not work out ALL the time.
1. When the bar on the bottom right corner starts blinking red, click the left mouse button for a possible win for your house!*2. To kick the opposing Seeker, get up next to him/her and click the left mouse button.3. When you lose a mach, don't worry, you can always play it again. Just click on the game you just played, however, none of the games but the last one are as important as the any other.
Dueling
After you have seen the dueling seen you can duel for other people’s beans. The way you can duel is on some free time, go down to the Entrance Hall, if you are coming in from outside than go to the door on the right but if you are coming down the stairs than go to the door on the left. Pretend you are going to the Great Hall and stop right in front of the door. Turn to your left and you will see a boy standing there. Go and talk to him and he will offer to duel with you fo a certain amount of beans. You will work your way up to the best person. The easy way to beat them is to let them shoot a spell at you then move before it hits you about five times. Then shoot rictusempra at them. They might use expelliarmus to defend them selfs that means you have to move. If you get five-hundred beans you can go and buy Quidditch armor from George. Then you can earn more beans again.
Moaning Myrtlye’s Bathroom
In Moaning Myrtlye’s bathroom Myrtle hovers past a bathroom door. As she passes it, the door will open for a moment. (Like in the movie when she mentions she died in the toilet right after she unlocks the door for a boy to tell him to leave) Run over and climb up on the toilet seat and then jump up on the top of the tank. You can now jump to climb up on top of the stall. You should try turning off auto-jump for this as it may not work otherwise. Now that you are standing on top of the stall, jump from one stall to the next casting spells on each toilet. Collect your prizes. Directly across from this row of stalls is another row of stalls. To get over there you must, first, be on top of the stall that you started from (when Myrtle hovered past the door opens). Jump from the highest point here, to the highest point of the stall directly across from Harry. Repeat this process of shooting out toilets on this side of the bathroom as well. If you fall attempting this you must wait for Myrtle to open the door again.
Get Past The Basilisk Easily
If you have any Wiggenweld Healing Potion before you face the Basilisk, drink enough of them to fill all your Stamina bars. It makes it a lot easier to kill the snake.
