There's a beat of silence where they just stare at each other. Eddie's face wavers for a second before he snorts, running his hand down his face. "What are we even doing here, man?"
Steve falters, the inanity of the situation hitting him. "I, uh, I think we're about to actually fistfight over-- over who a bunch of 14-year-olds think is cooler."
Eddie considers that briefly, tapping his fingers against his mouth before nodding. "Yeah, okay, I've heard of worst causes. Dukes up, Harrington, let's go!" Eddie pushes up his sleeves and waves his fists in the air cartoonishly as he starts to circle Steve.
Steve laughs, following Eddie as he goes like a compass drawn north. "Oh yeah, man? To the death, right?"
"Of course. Is there any other kind of fight?" Eddie says, overly serious, and abruptly tackles Steve.
They wrestle for a moment, and it's playful and stupid, but it still takes Steve an embarrassingly short amount of time to get Eddie in a headlock.
"This is just sad, man," Steve teases as Eddie struggles. "Those guns just for show, then?"
"Oh shit oh shit not the hair please, please have mercy O King Steve," Eddie laughs breathlessly.
Steve considers it-- Eddie seems to take as much care in his hair as Steve does, and real respects real-- and in that moment of hesitation, Eddie hooks his leg around Steve's and pulls.
Steve yelps as Eddie cackles, dragging them both down into the grass.
He hits the ground with a choked gasp, breath knocked out of him, and he squints up at the sky, unsuccessfully trying to hold back a grin.
He turns his head to say something to Eddie but loses his breath a second time for a very different reason.
Eddie's still giggling to himself in little fits, winding down, and there's a lightness to him at this moment that Steve's never seen, only heard described by the kids pre-Vecna. Laughter suits Eddie Munson, much better than terror or guilt or seriousness, and Steve's suddenly aware that he would do anything in this moment to keep that surprised look of happiness on his face a second longer.
Eddie catches his eyes and turns his head toward him. He's got grass stuck in his hair, and Steve doesn't think before he reaches over.
It's soft. Softer than he was expecting. He's careful not to catch any of Eddie's hair as he pulls out the grass and ends up lingering longer than he means to, setting a curl back to rights before realizing that this is, like, maybe a little weird.
He jerks back, and the back of his hand brushes Eddie's cheek, which is-- which is--
Warm. Soft, too, but with the rough start to stubble, and the feeling of it lingers against his hand like a brand.
Eddie's eyes, dark and impossibly wide, watch him, quiet for once. He wets his lips before speaking, and Steve's eyes catch on that, too, before darting back up to Eddie's. Which, god, what even was that? Why-- why is he--?
"A draw, then," Eddie says, turning over onto his stomach and kicking up his feet, and the weird atmosphere vanishes like it never was. "You are a worthier opponent than I realized, Steve Harrington."
"Oh yeah?" Steve says, relieved and disappointed. "Well, you're not so bad yourself."
Eddie clicks his tongue and fans himself. "You're too kind."
Steve looks away, tracking the clouds passing overhead. "No, really. I know I haven't exactly been, y'know, the world's best welcoming committee-"
"Was pretty convinced you hated my guts, yup." Eddie agrees, nodding.
"I don't. I never did. You're just--" Steve wracks his brain, trying to fit a word to the squirming feeling in his chest that Eddie inspires. "You're really good, y'know?"
"I... don't know, actually." Eddie's voice goes flat, and when Steve turns back to look at him, he's looking at Steve like he's a live snake, or something else dangerous and close to his vulnerable bits.
"You're good with the kids. Good for the kids, too. God, Will's really opened up since he joined your dumb nerdfest. You're good with and to the girls, too, and Jonathan, and Argyle, and probably anyone else that crosses your path. You are, patently, a good dude."
Eddie's mouth opens and closes, but Steve barrels on, feeling electric and more than a little crazy. "And, and it's just-- I don't know, I just--"
"Harrington, if you're about to tell me you think I'm a better man than you, I will lose it," Eddie interrupts regardless, voice high and reedy. "I know you're being, like, genuine and honest right now, but I will laugh in your goddamn face-"
"No, it's not that."
"Okay, I know this directly contradicts what I just said, but the speed with which you said that... Ouch."
"No," Steve shakes his head, frustrated. "I didn't mean it like that. It's-- it's not a competition."
Eddie's eyebrows leap up. "It's not? I invite you to remember what we've spent the last few weeks on."
"That was just an excuse," He snaps his mouth closed the second the words leave his mouth.
"Excuse?" Eddie repeats slowly.
"I just. I don't know, man. Maybe," he swallows. "Maybe I just couldn't handle the thought of you being good to me."
"... Why not?" Eddie asks, eyes focused on him, open, not judging, and god, this is exactly what Steve was worried about.
Eddie looks at him, and Steve--
Kisses him. Can't really do anything else but kiss him.
And when Eddie, after the longest moment of Steve's life, starts kissing him back? It's like the answer to a question he hadn't realized he'd been asking.
Turns out it's not the kids' attention he'd wanted-- or not just the kids' attention, anyway.
When Eddie pulls back, lips red and wet, eyes dark and focused just on him, Steve knows he's finally won it.

“Munson Residence, wha'd’ya want?” Eddie groans into the receiver.
Whoever this is better be someone super fucking important to have woken him up with their damn ringing. He’s surprised Wayne didn’t wake up too, but it’d be kinda hard to hear the phone over those snores.
“Eddie! Thank god,”
Oh. Steve! Very important, actually.
“Oh, hey Steve, what’s up?”
“Eddie, can you do me a huge favor?”
“Yeah, of course, what’s wrong?” he immediately spirals into what all could have gone wrong, what could be going wrong. Everything dark blue and cold, vine-y and the flashing of red lightning—
“Nothing, nothing–well, something.. Can you please run to my place later today and grab my lunch? I forgot it this morning and I know I’m not going to be able to run back and get it and get back in time to eat it before my break is over.”
“Your lunch?” “Yeah, I packed one this morning but left it on the counter. There’s a key under the mat and everything.” Eddie barks out a laugh, “Tryin’ to get robbed, big guy?”
“I don’t care about any of the shit in that house.” Steve scoffs. He shrugs even though Steve can’t see him. “Fair enough. Sure Stevie, I’ll bring your lunch; when do you want me there?” “Dude, you’re the best; My lunch break is right at noon, can you be here just before then?”
“Got it. Five to noon at Family Video.” he drawls out as if he’s writing the information down.
“Uh, actually…not Family Video..”
A short two hours later, Eddie finds himself among a throng of people inside Melvald’s. He has to fight his way forward at first, but the crowd thins out as he gets closer to the registers.
Damn, he’s not even that far into the store and he feels like he’s ran a mile.
“Ms. Byers!”
“Oh! Hello Eddie, what brings you here?” “Steve called and asked if I could drop off his lunch to him. Do you know where he is? I didn’t even know he was working here.”
Joyce just grins at him. It’s weirdly mischievous. “Only temporarily, he’s near the back of the store. Just head back there and I’m sure you’ll find him.”
“Uh..thanks. See ya later Ms. B.”
He wanders toward the back of the store through the aisles, but stops up short when a fake white picket fence blocks his path.
The whole back corner of the store has been covered in fake felt snow, a couple of those fake plastic trees like Steve’s (though these are a normal size), a candy-striped ‘North Pole’, and dozens of paper snowflakes hang from the ceiling between what seems like hundreds of string lights.
And there, sitting in the middle of it on a throne that looks suspiciously like the one he used to use during Hellfire, is Steve. Dressed in a Santa suit. With long white beard, big ol’ belt and buckle, shiny black boots..
“Psst!”
He’s got something stuffed into his Santa jacket to give him the right shape, and even some small half-moon glasses, but those sparkling eyes, the freckles, that one swoop of brown hair stubbornly sticking out from under the fuzzy brim of his hat, that’s all Steve.
“Eddie!”
Santa Steve is fully enraptured by whatever story the kid on his knee is telling him, their hands waving every which way but somehow missing smacking Santa right in the face. Steve just continues to nod along, then gives them a hearty “Ho Ho Ho!” when they try to squeeze their tiny arms around his fake belly.
“Eddie!!”
He glances over at the sound of his name, and sees Robin waving frantically at him from her spot at old school music stand-turned-podium. She’s got on some sort of outfit that honestly looks like it was supposed to be a jester costume, where’d she even get that from?
His feet start toward her, but his eyes fall back on Steve Claus, now posing for a picture with the kid who’s smiling so wide it looks like his face will split in half.
Managing to take his eyes off Steve for a moment, he sees Jonathan behind the camera, and that Argyle kid is crouched in front of Robin, talking to the next kid in line to see Santa. All three of them are wearing matching jester costumes.
Eddie steps up to her podium after Argyle and the new kid pass in front of him to see Steve, “Family Video not paying enough, Birdie?”
She rolls her eyes, “Well, the extra cash doesn’t hurt. Joyce asked us to help out.”
He nods at her, and finds his eyes drifting back to Santa Steve.
This kid is much more shy than the last one, tilting her head down and taking short glances up at Steve’s face.
Steve is saying something to her, a low comforting sound that Eddie can only make out the tone of. His one hand covers the entirety of her upper back, and his thumb is moving up and down to try and soothe her nerves. His head is ducked down to be more level with her, looking at her over those half-moon glasses.
Suddenly, the girl’s head snaps up and Steve leans back a bit. “Yeah?” he hears him say.
The girl grins, nodding her head like crazy, then she too is squeezing Steve into a hug. It’s so unfairly endearing, he can actually feel his heart swelling in his chest.
Robin speaks up then, “So..?”
“So?” he repeats dumbly.
“So wha’d’ya think, Munson?”
“Does he need a Mr. Claus?”
He regrets the words as soon as they’re out of his mouth.
“Uh, wait, I mean Mrs.–Do you have— is someone going to—”
Eddie chances a look over at her…she’s wearing a smug, shit-eating grin. She leans toward him conspiratorially and mumbles out “I wouldn’t mind a Mrs. Claus myself.”
She leans back, still looking smug, but there’s a note of panic in her eyes.
He lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. “So would he.” he mumbles out himself, jerking his chin towards Steve.
Robin only shrugs “You never know.”
“You never—what do you know, Buckley?” he asks, stepping closer and pointing an accusing finger into her still smug face.
“I know that there’s some mistletoe hanging above the breakroom door.”
He’s confused for just a moment, then understanding floods through him, “You little—”
A short whistle interrupts his incoming tirade, and Eddie can see Steve Claus moving out of the corner of his eye.
“Sorry folks, it’s time for Santa’s Cookie break!” Robin calls out over the long line of people. “He’ll be back in 30 minutes though, don’t you worry!” the smile falls off her face as soon as she turns her back to them.
Eddie follows her, Jonathan, and Argyle toward the back rooms, “I’m gonna take a nap.” She says, “Tell Santa to grab me before he goes back.” She waves toward a door as she passes it and from the sprig of greenery hanging above it, this must be the breakroom.
Robin takes a right down a turn in the hall, and Jon and Argyle push out the back door of the building.
He expects more of the same when he opens the door to the breakroom, for Steve to huff and grouse about the kids or the parents or something, but when he does, Steve is grinning ear to ear as he combs through his (now removed) fake beard.
“Hey Santa Stevie.”
“Eds!”
“I’ve got your lunch.” he holds up the brown paper bag for Steve to see. Steve nods, and lays the beard out on an empty chair, taking off his hat and glasses too and setting them both on top before stepping forward to grab the bag. “And you have hat hair.” Eddie laughs.
Steve’s free hand jumps to his head and scruffs up the long hairs, making them stick up every which way instead of just being plastered down on his forehead.
“Better?”
“Sure, big guy.” Eddie pokes Steve’s fake belly.
Steve chuckles, then heads to a table in the corner where he dumps out his lunch bag.
“So what’d Past Steve pack for Future Steve?” Eddie asks, plopping down in a chair kitty-corner from Steve’s. “Bologna and mustard sandwich, Doritos, and half of a leftover Hellfire cookie.”
“And a Coke,” Eddie says, taking a can out of his jacket pocket, “I grabbed one for you from your fridge.”
“Thanks, Eddie.” Steve smiles warmly at him. “You want some?”
“No way dude, you gotta get your energy back after dealing with all those kids, right?” Eddie says, waving him off.
“Eh, some of them are little assholes, but most of them are really well behaved.” he’s ripping his sandwich in half, “Gotta impress Santa, right?”
He offers him one half, and Eddie takes it.
“It’s really not a bad gig, though the beard is itchy as hell…”
Steve starts talking about some of the kids who have come by in the last couple days of them doing this, having started on that past Monday, the 1st.
There were the kids asking for baseball bats, Lincoln Logs, Malibu Barbie, Rockstar Barbie (“Barbie’s a rockstar now?”, “Barbie can be anything, I guess.”), all the usual things.
Then there were kids that asked for actual Santa stuff, “I don’t want my mom and dad to get a divorce.”, “I wish I had some friends.”, “I want my grandpa to get better.”
“Makes me wish I actually was Santa, y’know? Then maybe I could actually help them.”
Eddie’s heart is definitely getting way too fuckin’ big for his chest.
He puts his hand on Steve’s forearm where it’s resting on the table between them. “You are a good man, Steve Harrington.”
Steve’s face flushes nearly as red as his suit. “Thanks, Eddie.” he glances above Eddie’s head then, “I better go wake up Robin, if she naps too long on top of the potatoes, she gets cranky.”
Eddie snorts out a laugh, “Yeah, better get on that.”
Steve stands up and tugs on his hat, not bothering to put on the beard and glasses yet. The fuzzy white band smushes a lock of his hair onto his forehead.
“Hold on,” Eddie stands as well, reaching forward to tuck the hair under the bottom of Steve’s hat. “Now you’ll be ready to see your adoring public.”
“Thanks,” Steve laughs, walking with him toward the door.
And of course, Eddie forgot all about the damn mistletoe until Steve’s arm stops him in the doorway.
‘Jesus H. Christ…’
He glances over at Steve, then up at the offending plant..
Eddie looks back down, out toward the rest of the store where they’d be clearly visible in the doorway.
“I guess you owe me one, huh big boy?” Eddie chuckles, ‘Stupid plant, stupid Robin, stupid Ed–’
His thoughts are cut off when Steve tugs him back into the breakroom, moves him against the wall, and leans down to press a kiss to his cheek. The opposite to the kiss he’d given Steve three weeks ago.
Steve leans back, a smirk on his lips and a pink flush on his face. “Now we’re even.” he winks, then turns out the door to wake up Robin.

Guys guys hi :) I’m so sorry I haven’t drawn life has been very much overwhelming I dunno how I’m still standing but I’m standing so YIPEEE
I don’t think I’ll make this an AU but HEAR ME OUT OKOK modern AU
Location wise they’re in Scotland, according to google they say Berk is based on an island “near Staffa of the inner Hebrides in Argyll and Bute in Scotland” so I think it’d be semi urbanized version of Berk? Not city city per say and not suburbs either, just village-like
Hiccup has this MASSIVE fixation on dragons, and he and his friends r on a bike gang and they travel a lot and it’s always hiccup pushing them to go further and further each time, to the dismay of his dad trying to teach him how to b responsible enough for [insert plot convenient position]
For Jack I’m not sure yet, maybe he just travels a lot (dunno y, maybe kinda like snufkin but instead of following spring he follows winter and boom he stumbles to berkkk heheheheheh, he might’ve decided to start traveling out of yearning for winter winds and he lets it LITERALLY guide him, I think I’d like if in this au he willingly left his home but got a goodbye, and def comes back every now and then, in between he writes letters (there’s a movie that’s like that abt a woman who travels w her daughter letting the north wind guide her, don’t remember name tho)) he hates shoes bc it keeps him from being able to razzmatazz, and hiccup’s poor poor anxiety can’t take it. He’s just a silly guy
Dunno how they meet, why they do, or how it develops, but I just through it’d b cool to draw since i think modern hijack au would go kinda this direction too maybe
Def will work more on Jack later

The entire group stayed on top of the apartment building a few blocks from downtown till the security of nightfall washed over the town. Steve and Eddie stood together toward the front of the building with a pair of binoculars as they spoke to each other. You watched the two of them interact and could see they were obviously good friends.
Though Steve was the leader of the team, Eddie was obviously his right-hand man.
“Alright,” Steve spoke as the two turned toward the rest of you. “They are camped toward the North side of the town, with a small patrol group headed toward the south side. South is where we need to leave to head back to Camp.”
“There are a few on rooftops, but if we’re quick and silent we can make it past them. We’re going to move in groups of three. Make it easier and less likely to be spotted.” Eddie finished, his face cast in deep seriousness. Then you could see more of the man Eddie had become and less of the boy you remembered. “Steve is going to head out first with Steph and Patrick. Argyle you’re going to lead the group with Denise and Fowler.” Eddie’s eyes moved to you, and you saw the slight turn of his lips, before speaking your name, “…Robin and Nancy are going to come with me. We’re moving second since we’re the larger group.”
“We’re going to need to be vigilant, and make sure we’re looking out for these people and each other. There are also flayed down there, not many, but some that are moving through back parts of the town.” Steve sighed heavily. “Try and only use your knives if needed, gunfire is only going to draw attention where we don’t want it.”
You looked around and saw that everyone seemed to be in the same somber mood that you were feeling. A part of you was scared, you weren’t going to lie to yourself about that. Since the last time you had a run-in with these people, those you cared about most were taken away.
Everyone moved from the place they’d been resting for the moment and started to split off into their groups. You wanted over to Eddie with both Nancy and Robin at your side. You could read the anxiousness all over Robin’s face and body language. You couldn’t help but reach over and give her hand a gentle squeeze. Her blue eyes shot toward you quickly, before a half smile spread over her lips.
“We’re going to be ok,” You spoke softly, seeing her shoulders relax slightly. “I’m not going to let anything happen to us, ok? We’ve got each other’s backs.”
“I know, I know.” Robin sighed deeply. “I’m a naturally anxious person, not gonna fully relax till we’re out of the clear.”
The sound of footsteps coming closer caught both of your attention, you turned away from Robin to see Eddie walking closer to you. He’d moved his bandana back around the lower part of his face and tied his hair back. His dark eyes stared down at you, and you even saw a bit of worry swimming around in them.
“Robin, gonna have you with Nancy. You two will have each other’s backs.” Eddie looked at you, “That’s gonna leave you with me, sweetheart. We’re gonna move together still, but I think having a partner also works in case we’re separated. If we do, meet at the main street where we came in.”
Robin nodded her head, “Got it, Munson.”
Each group returned down the fire escape at the side of the building. Steve’s group leaves first, with you and your group following closely. You gripped tightly to the knife you held in your hand with your other hovering over the handle of the gun you had tucked in your waist. Eddie stepped forward first, leading the three of you, with you close behind him.
From a distance, you could hear the noise of the radical group that was more up north like Steve said. You moved quickly, and as quietly as you could, down the street with your bodies pressed tightly against the buildings.
Even with the night falling over the town and casting it in darkness, you used the darker shadows of the abandoned buildings for more cover. When the four of you turned around the corner down the alley you, Robin, and Eddie had come up earlier, you all paused for a moment. Your eyes scanned over seeing the bodies of Flayed lying across the back alley, and the further forward you looked, the more you saw.
“Jesus fuck,” You whispered with a groan, your face screwing up with disgust. The smell of the bodies hits you almost instantly. You pulled up the collar of your shirt to try and mask the smell, but it was useless against the pungent stench.
“They destroyed through the pack,” Robin spoke, her voice tight with her face matching yours. “With the amount dead, this group has to be bigger than we thought.”
“More reason for us to get the fuck out of here,” Nancy spoke from behind Robin.
Eddie nodded his head before moving forward more toward the main street. But it wasn’t long till the sound of gunfire caused the four of you to freeze. Everything around you felt like it froze for a moment as ice seemed to rush through your veins.
“Steve,” Nancy whimpered.
Eddie scrambled and reached through his pack for his walkie, before pressing down on it and calling out. “Munson reaching out, anyone?”
“Argyle here, man, gunfire coming from further forward, copy.”
“Harrington?” Eddie called out, but there was a response. “Fuck,”
More gunfire rang out from the direction you all needed to go, in the same direction Steve and his group were leading.
“We need to go and help them,” Robin spoke with her voice straining.
“We need to come up with a plan.”
You reached quickly for your gun, checking the barrel before closing it, “The plan is to fucking get out of here alive, and not leave our friends to fend for themselves.”
Eddie called your name as you quickly turned the corner, gun raised as you headed toward the noise. It wasn’t too far ahead you saw the parks of bullets hitting against the side of buildings and breaking glass joining in with the noise. Your gaze moved up and you saw someone sitting on top of a building, gun pointed down the street.
You didn’t think.
You didn’t hesitate.
Not caring what they were shooting at, cause in your mind, it was made up it was your people.
So, you aimed and fired.
The first bullet was missed. You saw the person rise up slightly and turn in your direction. You took that as your chance, your target becoming clearer, before firing again.
Their head was knocked back by the force before their body disappeared.
“Are you fucking insane!” Eddie’s voice came up from behind you.
You just glared at him before moving forward more, now with the three others beside you. The clear emotion of him being pissed at you was all over Eddie’s face, the bit you could see from the moonlight. But you didn’t care. He could lecture you later after you all were able to get out of here.
“Argyle speaking, moving further forward, coming from west.”
“Harrington, we’re taking cover, we’ve been spotted. Patrick’s been shot in the shoulder.”
“Munson moving forward, coming through the main street, where are you located Harrington,” Eddie spoke back through the walkie.
“Some hardware store, we got spotted by four,” Steve replied.
“Make that three, one was taken out,” Eddie responded.
The three of you came up along where the side alley met with the main street. You saw where the gunfire was coming from and could see the three others Steve was speaking of, and it looked like they were returning fire. Again, you moved with instinct and checked the opposite side and saw no one was approaching. So you pushed forward, with Robin moving with you. Her shotgun was raised as she pointed and shot forward. Now the attention was on you.
“Foreigners!” One of them shouted out before the bullets were headed in your direction. "Call for backup!"
You ducked behind a mailbox and could hear the bullet hitting against the rusted metal before you popped back up and returned fire. Another dropped.
“We need to push toward the warehouse,” Eddie spoke, moving swiftly along the fronts of the buildings, ducking behind what he could.
Your heart felt like it was going to rip from your ribcage with how hard it was pounding with the adrenaline rushing through your veins. A part of you knew, deep down, you were being reckless with how you were moving. But you didn’t care, because these people killed your family – and were not trying to take your new one from you.
One of the men came up beside you causing you to act fast, driving your knife into his neck and pulling his body down with yours. The gurgling sound of blood rushing through his airwave, causing him to choke on it, didn’t deter you. You didn’t feel anything, instead moving again as the backup of the radical group fell upon you.
Eddie was the first to make it to the warehouse with Nancy close behind them. You followed close behind Robin and stood within the doorway, trying to stay hidden as you saw another group sweeping through the street.
“We gotta go, man,” Eddie spoke, watching as Nancy patched up Patrick’s arm, “We don’t stand a chance getting out of here if we fucking hesitate. This group is huge.”
“I fuckin’ know!” Steve spoke, the stress and realization of the situation clearly getting to him, “But our only way forward is going to give us less and less coverage. We can’t risk it; we could lose people.”
“We don’t really have a fuckin’ choice!” Eddie spoke.
A gunshot rang through the store causing everyone to duck down further than you all already were.
“Argyle reachin’ out man, we lost Fowler. Fowler is down, we’re pushin’ forward,” came through the walkies.
“We need to move now!” You called out, shooting back, but unable to see if you were even meeting your target. “I spot about fifteen.”
“This gunfire is going to cause Flayed to rush through this town again, we have to fuckin’ move,” Eddie spoke.
“Ok, ok!” Steve shouted before moving to help Patrick off the floor, “We head out first, you guys cover us, and we fuckin’ book it.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, that fear from before seemed to loom over everyone. Knowing, deep down, the chances of you all making it out of this was low.”
“We’ll cove you,” Robin spoke, shotgun already aimed forward as Steve moved closer toward the door.
You stepped out first and returned fire as you knew Steve was moving behind you down the street, his arm tight around Patrick’s waist as he helped the wounded man. From the other side of you, you saw Nancy step up beside you, giving more cover as the other exited the hardware store.
“Shit!” Robin screamed, her eyes wide as she looked to the other side of you, catching your attention and distracting you.
You whipped your head around to see a few Flayed stumbling and moving onto the main street, with one dragging its decayed leg behind him as he moved quickly toward Nancy. You screamed out her name as you fired toward the monster, the shot hitting its shoulder, causing it to slow. Nancy moved and set a shot through its head causing it to drop to the ground.
“We gotta move!” Nancy cried out.
Chaos erupted as the remainder of the Flayed stumbled out onto the streets with the draw of the gunfire pulling them. You didn’t make it far, maybe another block or so, till you felt a burning ripping feeling through your shoulder. It was enough to cause you to scream out in pain as it sent you to your knees. You heard someone call out your name as you fell against the asphalt and reached to grab for your shoulder. Quickly the familiar, sticky, feeling of blood coated your fingers.
“Fuck! Fuck!” Robin shouted as she moved beside you, bending down to grab your hand and move your fingers away. “Gunshot to the shoulder, but we gotta move, ok? We can’t stay here!”
“Robin!” Nancy yelled out.
Robin ignored your screams as she hauled you off the ground and back onto your feet. But neither of you made it far as the few flayed from before had caught up to you. You swallowed down the nauseous pain and tried to raise your other hand to fire, but every shot was missing.
“Run to catch the others,” Robin instructed.
“I’m not leaving you guys,” You whimpered out, crying out again as you sheathed your gun into your waist and grabbed your knife once more.
You bit down into your lower lip as the pain in your left shoulder moved through your body, as you drove your knife into the skull of the one coming toward you. The weight of it caused you to stumble slightly, as you ripped your knife out.
“Alright, let’s go!” Robin spoke as she took care of the last one, “I’m running low on ammo, we gotta get out of here.”
You and Robin watched as Nancy turned to follow the two of you, and then watched with horror, as a bullet split through the back of her skull. Her body dropped quickly with a sickening thud.
“Nancy!” Robin screamed, you stood there frozen for a moment.
Your eyes were fixated on the way her blood spilled and painted across the streets. Robin rushed toward her friend and bent down to move her onto her back. It was like Robin’s brain was allowing her to process what was happening. Her hands frantically moved over her friend's face.
Half of Nancy’s face was gone with a gunshot coming from the left side, where her eye once was.
“No, no…Nance! Oh, god.” Robin sobbed.
You looked to either side of you seeing the group moving closer with the flayed starting to take over the streets, while the other end showed that your group was ahead of you two. You seemed to move on autopilot with your brain only focusing on the survival aspect.
“Robin, Robin…we have to leave.”
Hearing your own voice had you thinking for a moment it wasn’t your own. Forgotten was the gunshot in your shoulder causing blood to drip down your arm and onto the ground.
“Robin.”
You grabbed her shoulder with your good hand, and she pushed back on you, crying harder.
“Robin! Come on!” You screamed, grabbing her harder and pulling her away from Nancy.
Robin worked quickly and grabbed up Nancy’s pack and her weapon, tears streaming down her cheeks as she stumbled away from Nancy’s dead body. You held Robin tightly against you as you moved down the street, keeping your bodies as close to the buildings as possible.
You shot one final look of your shoulder seeing Nancy’s fallen body once more, before turning the block.
“Holy shit!” Argyle spoke the moment you and Robin came into view.
Eddie raced toward you, “Fuck, sweetheart, fuckin’ scared me. I thought you were right behind me.”
His words quickly stopped the moment she saw the blood covering half your body, before seeing the distraught state that Robin was in.
“Guys, where’s Nance?” Steve’s voice spoke from behind Eddie.
You held onto Robin tighter as she seemed to cry a little harder. It made Eddie’s stomach twist to see your face nearly void of any emotion. Your blank gaze moves over his shoulder to Steve.
“She’s not with us anymore,” You spoke softly.
“They shot her, Steve! Fuckin’ shot her!” Robin spoke through broken tears.
“Fuck,” Argyle spoke, everyone else falling silent.
Steve seemed to swallow down his emotions for a moment, turning his gaze away as he stared down toward the ground.
“What the fuck happened to you, sweetheart,” Eddie spoke, his tone frantic and worried, as he stepped closer to you. His hand caressed over your shoulder causing you to hiss and cry with pain. “Shit…I-I should’ve checked that you were with me,” Sorrow filled his eyes as he stared down at you.
“I-I’ll be ok,” You spoke, pulling away from Robin, she stumbled toward Steve. The two of them held tightly to each other. You watched on and your heart broke for them.
“Come ‘ere,” Eddie spoke, grabbing off your jacket and exposing the gunshot more. You watched as he dug through his pack and grabbed some gauze, before grabbing a nearly empty bottle of alcohol. “This is gonna burn, but we gotta stop the bleeding.”
You nodded your head and braced yourself, as he poured over the wound. It burned for a moment before turning into a dull ache. He placed down a cotton pad over either side of the shot, before wrapping it over your shoulder with the gauze.
“We gotta head out,” Steve spoke, reaching up and wiping away the tears falling down his cheeks, keeping an arm around Robin. “W-We need to go before we spotted again.”
Everyone somberly nodded their heads before gathering close together heading away. Eddie kept you close to his side, reaching down and grabbing your hand on the other side of your wound. His eyes were heavy with sadness as he stared down at you. In his mind, he felt selfish to be grateful that it was Nancy and not you.
“You gonna be ok?” You asked, looking up to him.
Eddie nodded his head slightly, “Are you?”
Flashes of Nancy’s body dropping played through your mind again and it caused your chest to tighten slightly.
“I-I think so.” You whispered, moving closer to Eddie with your hand pulling from his so you could wrap an arm around his waist.
As you walked you could hear both Robin and Steve speaking to one another.
“We can’t leave her there, Steve,” Robin spoke softly, her voice cracking as she continued to cry. “We have to give her a burial.”
“I know, but we are outnumbered, once we get back to camp, we’ll see what the Chief says.”
You knew better than to speak up, knowing and witnessing yourself what others did with the death of those that weren’t their own. If Nancy wasn’t going to be eaten by the Flayed, she was most likely to be burned with any other dead. But you didn’t want to speak and take away the last bit from the two of them.
Death wasn’t something that was unheard of, especially in the state of the world now. But that didn’t mean it got easier.
It took four days for the rest of you to make it back to the camp. The moment you walked through the gates it seemed that the entire camp was there to greet you. The first thing you spotted when your eyes scanned over the crowd, was Mike. He stood off to the side toward the front, with his amputated arm wrapped up. He looked better, healthier than the last time that you’d seen him.
The reality of what had happened only hit harder as you saw the hopeful look in his eyes.
Chief stepped toward Steve and Eddie the further you all walked into the camp. You watched with saddened eyes as they talked with the Chief in hushed tones. You could see on the older man’s face the moment Steve broke the news of the loss of Fowler and Nancy.
“Nancy? Where is Nancy?” an older woman’s voice spoke up.
Looking over you saw an older woman step toward Hopper, her blonde hair was pulled back from her face, but even with the different colored hair, you saw the resemblance. This must’ve been Mrs. Wheeler. Soon enough Jonathan joined Mike with another boy. He was roughly the same height as Mike and stepped up to grab onto Mike’s hand tightly. Between the resemblance between him and Jonathan, this must’ve been his brother that you had not met yet.
“Where is my Nancy!” Mrs. Wheeler screamed more, the Chief gently guiding her away from everyone else.
Your eyes squeezed tightly as you heard the horrid, heartbreaking scream of a mother that just learned that her child was gone.
It brought tears to your eyes as you walked away.
You didn’t feel it was right of you to mourn with the others.
The pain in your shoulder became a dull ache and knew you needed to get to the medical wing. You stumbled past the crowd and through the main doors of the old Lab, heading in the direction of the Medic.
“Hey, sweetheart,” Eddie called out as he rushed to follow after you. You stopped for a moment for him to catch up. “Turned around and you were gone, where are you goin’?”
“I-I thought I should get my shoulder checked out,” You spoke, clearing your throat a little. “I-It didn’t feel right…watching the Wheelers and everyone getting the news.”
Eddie nodded his head, “Come on, let’s get you taken care of.”
He reached down and grabbed your hand and pulled you down the hall. You fell to his side as the two of you walked, nuzzling your face into his t-shirt. With each step the two of you took the fatigue of the last week or so started to weigh heavy on your shoulder.
As you rested against him the tears came again, your heart aching for a girl you barely knew. Memories you thought you’d buried deep only ripping back up to the surface.
Well, that was...that. I realized my mistake in the last chapter of mentioning Nancy was with the group when previously I sent her home with Mike. But I changed that and now she's dead. I hoped you enjoyed it...next chapter is gonna be Reader and Eddie focused. Lots of comfort and cuteness I promise. Please leave your thoughts or come and chat! I love speaking with you guys about this and seeing your predictions/thoughts and such!

do you think extinct gaelic dialects could possibly be revived (saying nothing of the likelihood of that happening) if enough people were to make an effort in learning/speaking them? sometimes i look at old dialects as a learner and wish somehow they could be brought back
Depends on the dialect and how extinct they are. First of all, people like to speak of some dialects as extinct when they're not yet, they're just very threatened. For example, there is a still a native speaker of Perthshire Gaelic alive - she's 104 but she's still kicking. The same for Easter Ross Gaelic - still has one old woman who's a native speaker, a fisherwife in the village of Brora. Her sister passed away last year, making her the last native speaker, but she's still around. One family has kept up Tayside Gaelic for two generations now, and other speakers could learn to speak the local language from them. Other dialects have semi-speakers, aspects of which could still be picked up though it would not be the complete dialect as gained from a fluent speaker - for example, the son of the last native speaker of Aberdeenshire Gaelic is still alive, and he, while not fluent, is competent in the languge and can recite some poems and rhymes from memory that his mother taught him which will be enough to save some vocabulary and phrases, should someone decide to pick it up.
Then there are dialects who's last native speakers have passed away, but where fluent learners actually did what we're discussing here, and learned the dialect to fluency at those last speakers knees - examples just based on people I know at least somewhat personally would include north Argyle, Dùthaich MhicAoidh, Wester Ross, Glens of Loch Aber and Glen Coe. These dialects, then, also have a lease of life, and could be learned and spoken with now living speakers.
A third category would be dialects which, while extinct, were extensively recorded before their death and which could be picked up with a degree of continuity from those recordings. Isle of Arran, for example (which I know at least Alasdair Paul is doing for his historical novels, who's characters speak with a clear Arrannach flavour), or Badenoch, or Lorne (the last native speaker, Iain MacPhàidein nach maireann, passed away not five months ago), among others. All of these I would say could all be revived and be said to be genuinely the same dialect, even though it will of course change and loose some of it's flavour, and certain sayings or words that just simply were never recorded.
However, there is a last category of dialects that are irreparibly lost, that simply were not recorded in time. Loch Lomondside Gaelic, for example, died out in the early 20th century, and the only extensive collection that happened locally, by Dòmhnall Dewar, was not a linguistic but a folkloric study. The same goes for most of the borderlands and the Southern Highlands, (Cowall, Kintyre, Black Isle, South Argyle, Braemor, and Bredalbane, etc) and generally most districts outwith the crofting region, where the languge (as well as more or less the entirety of the people) disappeared with the clearances, without the lease of life granted by crofting and the crofting act. This goes doubly so for the only dialect of Lowland Gaelic that survived into modern day, in the form of that Gaelic which was spoken in the Glens of Galloway into the 17th century. These dialects are all lost completely. But, as you understand from the earlier list, a surprising number of dialects are still alive and to some extent kicking, and could have a fighting chance if things were to turn out differently. I can give you some tips or contacts if the dialect you yourself is interested in is salvageable, just DM me or send another ask if whatever.

Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is about 1 1⁄2 miles (2.5 kilometres) north-east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road about midway between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible (with difficulty) from the shore at low tide. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer.

Lionsgate Moving Forward With Henry Cavill & Chad Stahelski ‘Highlander’ Reboot As Action-Fantasy Pic Heads To AFM To Enliven A Strike-Hit Market
By Andreas Wiseman
October 27, 2023 8:17am
EXCLUSIVE: In the world of Highlander reboots, there can still only be one…and it’s a good one at that.
For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot which has Henry Cavill aboard to star as the eponymous Scottish swordsman and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski set to direct.
We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords. The team is eyeing a 2024 start.
This will be welcome news for AFM buyers whose pool of pre-sale projects has been diminished by the ongoing strike.
The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline — spawned four sequels and three TV series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Queen memorably provided the soundtrack for the original movie.
Producing the reboot are Joshua Davis, Fast And The Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski (thru his 87Eleven Entertainment production company) and Louise Rosner.
The current draft of the screenplay is by Mike Finch. The late Peter S. Davis, the producer of the original Highlander, initiated the development of the new film. Summit first acquired remake rights to the original in 2008.
Former Superman and The Witcher actor Cavill remains in high demand. Among movies in post are Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle and two Guy Ritchie projects, including WWII pic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Stahelski has directed all four John Wick films, which have been a goldmine for Lionsgate, taking more than $1BN. He previously talked about the new Highlander as the first in a trilogy but we’ve not had word whether that’s still the case.
Cavill and Stahelski were attached and reported before the strike.
The arrival of the Highlander reboot is a shot in the arm for the AFM, whose business has been hampered by the SAG-AFTRA strike. This and Kevin Costner’s Horizon movies, which we told you this week would also be on sale, are the two biggest-budget prospects revealed for the market so far. A number of packages haven’t come together or aren’t being officially announced due to strike restrictions or anxiety over optics. Frankly, given the limitations posed by the strike, I’ve been surprised at the number of new or reworked projects that are on sale (many are shooting in Europe). There are still a handful of pre-sales packages for buyers to get their teeth into, even if more action may be done this market on completed and near-completed movies.
I'm all for Henry in a kilt! 😊

On January 6th 1156 Somerled met the Norse at the Battle of Epiphany.
This little known battle is all the more extraordinary as it was a naval affair, thought to have been fought off the coast of Islay.
The western Isles and Isle of Man were part of the Kingdom of Norway, but with the King being so far away and often seen as weak the region was an area where the warlords reigned and often battled for supremacy.
At the head of this battle was a man we know mostly by the name of Somerled who was no ordinary warlord. He may have been a gall-gàidheil, or Norse-Gael, but his loyalty was biased to his Scottish ancestry, although he had his own agenda of conquest and political authority.
Against him was the Norse Godred Olafsson (Godred the Black), King of the Isles, Godred, sometimes called Godfrey by the English was Somerleds brother in law, his sister was Raghnailt, their father, Olaf, the previous King of the Isles, had been murdered by their cousins three years previously, no loyalty with these families! Godreds seat of power was Isle of Man
Godred was a harsh leader and made many enemies, some of whom approached Somerled who agreed to their plan to overthrow Godred and replace him with Somerled's son Dubgall mac Somairle.
He began preparations and began construction of 80 ships modelled on the Norse longship. Word got back to Godfred that Somerled was drumming up support and set sail to sort things out.
The fleets of Godred and Somerled met off Islay, to the north at Rubh' a' Mhaoil, on the night of the Epiphany on 5–6th January. Can you imagine the sight of two "viking" fleets lit by torch light going up against each other in the dead of the night!!!
The Battle itself was inconclusive; so the two leaders sat down and reached a compromise agreement. Somerled would have the islands of Argyll including Mull and Islay, while Godred would keep the rest including the Western Isles and the Isle of Skye. But it was an uneasy peace, and two years later they were back at it again with a second sea battle. This time the result was in no doubt: Somerled had smashed the Manx fleet, and Godred fled the scene.
Somerled’s empire now stretched from Lewis to Man, and he styled himself as the ‘King of the Isles’. Nominally he held the islands from the Norwegian Crown, but in reality he ruled as a free prince, and gave his loyalty to the Scottish king.
Somerled was later deposed and possibly assassinated by a Scottish Clan who were flexing their muscles and gaining powerful friends in the Royal court, they were The Stewarts, but that's another long story.......

For any Jargyle fans out there, I've just published my Jargyle fic for @thefreakandthehair's Spicy Six Summer Fanworks Challenge! It was written for prompt #32: Heatwave (but I accidentally incorporated prompt #33 Popsicles as well, oopsie)
I know I'm fairly late for the challenge, and we've fully entered spooky season now, but I hope you're still in the mood for some more summery vibes! :) Strawberries on a summer evening Words: 4,606 Relationship: Argyle/Jonathan Tags: PWP, suggestive popsicles, first time, getting together, hand jobs, come eating (don't even look at me)
Summary under the read-more:
Indiana summers can get hot, and Jonathan has always gotten by. But none of that could prepare him for California hot. July in Lenora Hills gives him a taste of what the innermost circle of Hell must certainly feel like. They’re hit by the most oppressive heatwave of Jonathan’s life. It’s humid, too, thanks to the thunderstorms that keep rolling in from the north. School’s out for the summer, and he’s happy to have graduated, he really is! But that also means he has nowhere to hide from the heat; neither his house nor Argyle’s has any air conditioning. And none of Jonathan’s old tricks seem to be enough anymore.
And for the past few days, when Jonathan has been feeling even more dizzy from the heat than usual, and the fan in Argyle’s window has been working overtime, Jonathan has been having fantasies about Argyle drowning him in his bathtub. This is, of course, insane. Jonathan doesn’t have a death wish. He just really, really wants to get out of this all-consuming, unrelenting heat.
And possibly have Argyle’s hands on him. Which is a more recent development.

Steve Harrington x Single Mom Reader
Summary: 3 years after the "earthquake" rocked through Hawkins and changed the town forever, it's now known as the Conspiracy Capital of the Country. Drawing in thousands of visitors a year to one specific spot, Steve Harrington's Hawk Shop: your one-stop shop for all your visit needs. Hawkins was essentially a ghost town if it wasn't for the wannabe journalists and demon hunters. And then Y/N moved in, buying the house next door to the Wheelers for herself and her 4-year-old daughter.
Warnings: AU set after season 4 and the Main cast all survived. lots of made-up lore, pregnancy assumptions, mentions of steves childhood and losing his parents in the earthquake, love at first sight, flirting
Word count: 2.5k
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It was so strange to see a moving truck come into Hawkins, most of the time people were leaving. It was basically a ghost town now, the only real foot traffic they got was from conspiracy theorists, news reporters and people obsessed with strange “natural” disasters.
The influx of guests coming through town inspired Steve to open his own novelty shop in one of the now vacant shops on the main road. Robin and Eddie made t-shirts and buttons inspired by the haunting events that took place in Hawkins, and you’d be surprised how well the Hellfire shirts sold after Eddie was in the news for murder for so long… the satanic panic was now the reason Steve made so much money.
Most of their friend group never left Hawkins, if they did it was for school and they came back regularly. The Wheelers left their house to Nancy and Mike, packing up with Holly and their things before moving away. So did Robin’s parents… she lived with Steve above the shop now, but for a while, they both lived in Nancy’s basement.
Steve lost his parents that night of the earthquake, he had no idea they were even home or why they’d be downtown when the earth opened up, but he lost them. Just like that he went from a single child to the only Harrington left in his family and even though they had their differences, not a day went by where he didn’t miss them both.
He debated selling their house, he already came into possession of all their money and assets, including their business downtown, all of which he handed out to his friends. Eddie had a studio beside the novelty shop, Nancy and Jonathan took over the newspaper and even branched out to do an internet newsletter with help from Susie after she moved to town… and in a few months, Argyle would be opening up a pizza parlour with help from Susie’s sister Eden, who had a garden salad named after her on the menu.
It was nice having everyone he considered Family all living in the same town still, Eddie and his uncle live above the studio, Argyle and Eden are above what will be their restaurant, and Dustin still lived with his mom, just with the addition of Susie and a few more cats. Lucas and Max moved into Steve's old house, equipped with a ramp for her wheelchair and a bedroom on the first floor, Joyce, Hopper, El and Will also lived there for a small price of taking care of the property and making sure Max was okay when Lucas was away at school.
Steve kinda made it his mission to take care of everyone who loved him. It was about time a real loving family lived in that house…
He watched the moving van through the shop window, it travelled down the main street and turned onto Cornwallace. They must’ve bought one of the many houses left vacant up there. It was really only Nancy and the Sinclairs that still lived north of the epicentre. The main crack ran through the centre of Hawkins, all colliding at the town hall which was still in shambles. The bell could still ring, only no one was able to get inside to ring it ever again.
The vines that were once Vecna were now nothing but stone, adhered to buildings they touched as if welded in place, a forever marker of what tried to destroy them all.
It was ugly, there was no explanation for what happened and no one would believe them anyway. They simply made do in the town that raised them, the town they almost died to save, it was their home and they weren’t going anywhere.
Steve's mind wanders back to the moving van throughout the day, intrigued by who these new people could be. Would they have children Erika’s age to repopulate the high school? Was it a newly married couple taking advantage of the absurdly cheap real estate they had to offer? Was it a single dude or a single woman? He wanted to know so bad.
Luckily for him, he’s the only store open past 6pm that offered everyday essentials. Most people used him as a corner store, so he kept milk, eggs, pop, candy bars, breakfast essentials, canned foods and bread. Not always fresh, but he sold it anyway. No matter what anyone said, he really loved his little store.
A woman he’s never seen before pushes the door open, letting her toddler in first and then following. “Hi,” the little girl waves at Steve.
“Hello, Welcome to the Hawk Shop,” he waves back with a smile. “Anything I can help you with?”
“Yes actually,” she leans down and picks her daughter up. She walks over to his counter and sighs as the child rests against her hip. “We just moved here and I was wondering if you know of a restaurant or anything around? I didn’t have time to hit the grocery store before it closed and we haven’t had dinner yet…”
“We, unfortunately, don’t have a restaurant in town, yet. We’re getting a Pizza place soon, but until then, I do have some food here,” he explains before he leads them around to the back aisle. “Does she like spaghetti o’s?”
“She loves them,” she bounces the little girl a bit, making her laugh even with her thumb in her mouth. “Too bad we can’t make a grilled cheese with it, that’s her favourite.”
“I have some Kraft cheese slices upstairs in my apartment, I’ll throw in some bread for free too, as a welcome to the neighbourhood gift,” he really didn’t mind helping them out, he would do the same for any parent that came in, even if they weren’t beautiful.
“You don’t have to,” he waves it off, not wanting to put him out. “We can do with just some soup tonight.”
“I insist, wait right here!” He runs upstairs to his apartment, thanking god that Robin did a decent grocery shop the other day. He grabs some cheese, a brand new tub of margarine and the softest bread he had before running back to the shop.
He brings it all over to the counter where they’re waiting with two can’s of spaghetti o’s and a smile.
“Thank you,” she gives him a sweet smile. “Really, this is so nice of you, she was so hungry.”
“Big girl like you? I bet!” Steve uses his kid voice with her. “You’ve gotta eat lots of grilled cheeses if you want to grow up to have strong bones and a beautiful smile like your mom's…”
She gives him a sweet smile, “thank you… how much do I owe you?”
“$2.25,” he does the quick tax math in his head, only counting the canned goods at a dollar a piece. She hands him a fiver anyway.
“Keep the change, please?” She insists.
He nods, “okay… come back for whatever you need. I’m here all the time and if I’m not here I’m probably just upstairs or next door…”
“Have you lived here long?”
He nods as he packs all their groceries into a paper bag. “My whole life. It’s been pretty crazy… but I like it here.”
“We like it so far, don’t we, Lisa?” She asks her little girl.
Lisa was a beautiful name, very common among girls her age now, but it fit her well. The little girl nodded her head, “we have a swing set at our house.”
“Oh wow, you’re lucky,” he lets her live in the childhood wonderment of a new toy. Not overshadowing it with the fact he grew up with a pool… sometimes he missed that old part of his life and being a kid. But at least his 6 adopted buttheads were enjoying his old house now.
“We’ve gotta get home and eat before bed, but thank you for all this, seriously,” she smiles.
“Have a good night,” he waves them off, watching them leave happy.
Every part of him wanted to know more. Was it just the two of them? Did that little girl have a dad? Was her mom looking for someone to spend her life with? Cause if she was he was willing to do anything for her… most people would say Steve had a problem when it came to claiming he was in love at first sight, but something felt different this time.
When his shift comes to an end, he locks up and grabs his things, headed for Nancy’s. Robin was off at school for the week, so it wasn’t like he could talk to her about it, and sure Vicky was at the apartment but that would be weird… they weren’t that great of friends even if they were around each other all the time because of Robin.
Nancy was probably the only other person who understood him, and she also didn’t mind when he dropped by. Usually, he parks in the driveway beside her house, no one lived there, until today… his mystery woman was Nancy’s new neighbour, currently standing on the patch of grass that connected their two properties, meeting the woman Steve couldn’t stop thinking about.
Nancy has a trash bag in her hand, the moon is just bright enough that he can see them both smiling as they talk, so he parks on the side of the road and hypes himself up enough to join their conversation.
“Steve, hey!” Nancy waved to him once he got out of his car. “This is Steve, he owns most of the town…”
“Most of the town?” She repeats Nancy's words. “I knew he worked at the novelty shop—
“How’d you know that, already?” Nancy asks.
“I went over to get some spaghetti-o’s for dinner and he kindly gave us everything we needed to make grilled cheese too, Lisa was so happy, by the way,” she beams a smile at him. “I’m Y/N, by the way.”
He extends his hand to shake hers, her skin is so soft, that he can’t help but linger while they look each other up and down. Nancy can tell already that this is going to be a thing, she knew that look in Steve's eyes, and surprisingly, Y/N had it too.
“You guys settling in okay?” he finally asks.
She nods, slowly pulling her hand away from his grip, “yeah, I just saw Nancy bringing the trash out and had some questions about getting rid of all my cardboard…”
“You can bring it by the shop,” Steve offers. “We have a huge dumpster, it’s no problem.”
“You’re too kind,” she can’t help but smile.
“You don’t know the half of it,” Nancy boasts on his behalf. “Sure he owns most of the town, but he’s given it all to anyone who’s stayed in town. For example, his parents used to own the building that was the Hawkins post and now me and my husband run the newspaper and our other friend owns the Hellfire Studios, if Lisa’s interested in learning the guitar, Eddie is the best teacher.”
“Wow, that’s amazing,” she’s blown away. “By any chance do you know who used to own the Motel 6? I’m trying to buy it…”
“No, sorry,” Steve turns to Nancy, who also shakes her head. “But I’m sure I can help somehow?”
“I’m sure,” she laughs. “You get off on helping people or something?”
“Or something,” he’s honest with her, getting caught up in her beautiful eyes and how they glistened in the moonlight.
“Um, Steve?” Nancy brings him back down to earth, “did you come over for something?”
“Yeah,” he clears his throat quickly. “Robin's not home till Friday, so I thought I’d come over here to hang for a bit, is that okay?”
“Yeah, absolutely,” she doesn’t care. “Can you put this in the can?” She pints at the garbage bin at the end of their driveway, handing him the black plastic bag.
“Sure thing,” he takes it without another word.
“I’ll let you go then, it was nice meeting you, Nancy,” Y/N waves her off. “You too, Steve.”
“Hopefully we can talk more soon?” He asks while walking back down the driveway.
“I’d like that,” she agrees and then skips back to her house.
She gives him one last wave from her porch as Steve goes into Nancy’s house, further cementing the feelings he had for her already. He’s barely inside Nancy’s place 5 seconds when she’s jumping on him for answers.
“She’s lived here 5 minutes and you’re already trying to get in her pants?”
“I am not!”
“You were practically eye fucking each other,” she exaggerates with the roll of her own eyes. “Seriously Steve, she’s a mother of 2.”
“Two?” His eyes grow wide, “she only brought Lisa into the shop tonight?”
“She’s clearly pregnant right now,” Nancy, of course, would notice that. “Did you seriously not see her stomach?”
He shakes his head, “no, I was too busy helping her… I saw she had a kid and my brain went into provider mode. You know how I get, any kid that comes into my store could literally walk out with anything they wanted, I’m a sucker for happy families.”
“I mean, it doesn’t seem like she has a partner,” Nancy clues him in further. “The moving van didn’t have much in it, and it was just the two of them unpacking it all, so she could very well be looking for a step-dad for her kids?”
“That’s what I was thinking,” he keeps his voice low. “That’s what I came to talk to you about, I didn’t expect her to be your new neighbour.”
“And she’s trying to buy the motel?” Nancy recalls. “Weren’t you talking about investing in restoring it so that more people will be interested in travelling through Hawkins?”
“Yeah,” he can’t help but smile. “I’ll call my guy down at the historical society, I’m sure he can help me get in contact with whoever still owns the property.”
Nancy and he walked through the house, towards the kitchen where Will, Mike, El and Jonathan are all sitting around the kitchen table, having a few bowls of ice cream. “Hey Steve,” Jonathan notices him first, and the others give him a small wave.
“Hey,” he takes a seat beside him, “did you meet the new neighbour yet?”
“No, did you?”
“We both did,” Nancy announces, “she’s super sweet, her name is Y/N and she has a little kid too, I think she said her name was Lisa?”
“Yeah,” Steve smiles again. “She told me she’s really excited to have a swing set now.”
“Those swings are awesome,” Will adds, remembering the good parts of his childhood that he had here, “we used to use them all the time whenever Mr. and Mrs. Linder weren't home.”
“She’s really pretty,” Steve swoons. “Like, the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen in my life.”
“The kid?” Mike asks, eyes wide in shock before Will smacks him. “Her mom, idiot.”
Steve manages to laugh, “her name’s Y/N…”
“That’s pretty,” El hardly had much to add but she smiles at him. “You’d make a good stepdad.”
“Thanks,” it warms his heart. “I’ve always thought so, too.”
ask to join my Steve taglist!!
