What is Festa Junina?

You may have heard the brazilian cc's talking about throwing a festa junina in the server, but what is it exactly?

Festa Junina translates to June's Party, and its origins go back to pagan midsummer and harvest celebrations. Time went on and it mixed with catholic beliefs, especially those centered around Saint Anthony, Saint Peter, and Saint John the Baptist (which is why it is also known as São João).

The tradition was brought to Brazil with colonization. It's no longer a summer fest since it's winter, but you can still see the influence (maybe the bonfires are part of it).

Nowadays, Festa Junina is known for the traditional square dancing and the food — seriously, the food is amazing (look up pamonha, cural, canjica, pé-de-moleque, bolo de fubá, cuzcuz nordestino... damn I'm hungry)! Most of it is made with corn or peanuts. Mulled wine is also a must! People dress in a "country" fashion, with straw hats, puffy dresses, and drawn freckles and mustaches. Everything is VERY colorful.

School kids will put on shows (known as quadrilhas), which usually include a "wedding" comedy sketch. In my high school, the twist was that the best man was in love with the groom. It was very dramatic. I loved it.

On June the 21st we celebrate the fifth sabbath of the Wheel of the year, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, the end of the light half of the year and the beginning of darkness. During this sacred day Fairies and spirits of all kind reveal bringing their power to the earth and creating a thread of powerful energies. We Celebrate the Sun and its light that in this sacred day reaches its highest peach before starting to decline. We celebrate the clash between darkness and light, between life and death, and the departure of light with the return of darkness. We feast to celebrate and honour the gods and the spirits; we light the sacred fire and keep it lit to celebrate the sun and its waning power.

Midsummer ☀️ Happy Solstice ☀️

We have a thing here in Finland which we call Juhannus. It’s a Midsummer celebration when people drink, grill, go to swim and sauna, go fishing etc. But because alcohol and going to the water on a boat or just go swimming… Let’s say alcohol and lakes don’t quite match, especially without the safety vests, so every Midsummer celebration there are also more or less drownings happening. Of course there have been years when there has not been any drownings. Is that because that day was rainy and/or cold I’m not certain. I think the drowning record is 21. And yes, we are only counting the drownings here. Of course other disasters happen as well but… well… We have created this thing called Midsummerbingo. People guess how many will drown this year. It’s quite dark, but… if you go on a boat drunk without any safety vests. You, kind person, are being dumb. If you don’t want to drown, at least put on a safety vest. Even if you were not drunk. I mean people have been drowning this way year after year after year. At this point people will just think you were were too dumb to die like this. Please, people, use your heads before you start drinking.
