Nine Herbs Charm
I always wanted to do a Nine Herbs Charm and this autumn i finally did it!!
Tumblr media
The Nigon Wyrta Galdor (NWG) or, popularly, the Nine Herbs Charm, is an Old English healing spell—a galdor—intended to remedy a wound of some kind. The charm is recorded in a single manuscript, Harley MS 585 (ff 160r—163r), commonly known today as the Lacnunga (Old English ‘remedies’), which the British Museum dates to the 9th or early 10th century. The topics, themes, and entities the charm touches upon, such as animism, emphasis on the numbers nine and other multipliers of three, and the invocation of the Germanic deity Odin (Old English Wōden) stem from the pre-Christianization beliefs of the Old English.
These are the nine herbs that i used in my nine herbs charm. I changed some of the herbs for related varieties that i found in the forest behind my home (cause i really wanted this charm to have a really personal note).
Mugwort -> i used "artemisia vulgaris"
Plantain -> i chose to use both "plantago major" and "plantago lanceolata"
Lamb's cress -> i chose to use "cardamine flexuosa" from the forest behind my home and "cardamine hirsuta" that grows along our lawn
Betony -> i chose to use "stachys sylvatica" instead of "stachys officinalis" because that's the only variety i found in our woods
Chamomile -> i found some chamomile along the fields in our town
Nettle -> i chose to use 'normal' stinging nettles
Crab apple -> we have "malus sylvestris" in our garden so i used its leaves (i didn't use the apples cause i started collecting in November)
Chervil -> i used "anthriscus sylvestris"
Fennel -> i bought some fresh regional fennel from a local farmer's market, cut it into small pieces and slowly dried it in the oven
Mugwort | plantain | lamb's cress

Betony | chamomile | nettle

And here's an excerpt of a translated version of the Nine Herbs Charm:
Remember, Mugwort,
what you brought to pass,
what you readied,
at Regenmeld.
You’re called Una, that most ancient plant.
You defeat three, you defeat thirty,
you defeat venom, you defeat air-illness;
you defeat the horror who stalks the land.
And you, Waybread, plant-mother!
You’re open to the east, yet mighty within:
Carts creaked over you, women rode over you,
over you brides bellowed, over you bulls snorted!
You withstood it all—and you pushed back:
You withstood venom, you withstood air-illness,
you withstood the horror who travels over land.
Now, this plant is called Stune, she who grows on stone:
She defeats venom, she grinds away pain.
She’s called Stithe, she who withstands venom;
she chases away malice, casts out pain.
This is the plant that fought against the wyrm.
She is mighty against venom, she is mighty against air-illness;
she is mighty against the horror who travels over land.
You, Venom-loathe, go now!
The less from the great,
the great from the less,
until for both he receives a remedy.
Remember, Chamomile,
what you brought to pass,
what you accomplished,
at Alorford,
that no one should lose their life to disease,
since for him Chamomile was prepared.
Finally, this plant is known as Wergulu,
who a seal sent over sea-ridges,
to aid against venom.
These nine plants defeat nine venoms!
A wyrm came slithering, and yet he killed no one,
for wise Wōden took nine glory-twigs
and smote the serpent,
who flew into nine parts!
(...)
She stands against pain, she stands against venom,
she is potent against three and against thirty,
against a foe’s hand, against great guile,
against malice and bewitchment
from animal and spirit.
Now! May the nine plants do battle against nine glory-fleers,
against nine venoms and against nine air-diseases,
against the red venom, against the running venom,
against the white venom, against the blue venom,
against the yellow venom, against the green venom,
against the black venom, against the blue venom,
against the brown venom, against the purple venom,
against wyrm-blister, against water-blister,
against thorn-blister, against thistle-blister,
against ice-blister, against venom-blister.
If any venom comes flying from the east,
or any comes from the north,
or any from the west over folk!
(...)

The way that I practice animism is, that spirit is the thing that animates the world. All physical things in the world have some kind of animate force that deserves respect just as much as the animating force inside me does.
Cleansing your spirit takes care of your body. Cleansing your body is caring for your spirit. Stewarding the spaces around you cares for the spirit of that place and the spirits of the things that use that space. When you go there and you can comfortably be in community with the spirits that are there, the blackberry, the rabbit, your friend, you have cared for your own spirit.
Making tea the way your parents made tea honors their spirit. Using the kettle your friend gave you honors the spirit of your friend and the spirit of the well-used kettle.
Caring for that kettle is caring for the spirit of the kettle. The kettle takes care of you because it is well-maintained it works well.
These things are not happening in the spirit world as a mirror to the physical world. They are not two things overlapping. They are one thing.

Pshh, hey. If you are in a budget or if you have to hide your practice, I have some witchy tips for you.
• You don’t need to have an altar. But if you want to, creating an altar on a wooden box is great; you can collect stuff to put in there and you can hide it under your bed.
• You don’t need crystals. Common rocks can be energised to act with a certain intention and they work just as well. You can also associate the place you got the stone/rock from with an intention, such as: a rock from a river or sea can be used for cleansing, purifying, taking energies away from you. A stone found at the property of a hospital can be used for health spells. These are vague examples, so I might make a list later on of all kinds of things you can do with mineral founding.
• Energised water is a great offering to most entities. Water holds memory and it’s easy to energise it with a certain intention if you concentrate.
• You don’t actually need candles. For many deities, an object that remembers you of them works as a taglock, an identification of the deity you’re worshipping. Besides, many spells do not need candles to work, such as: ritual baths, petitions, etc.
Have fun, and remember that your practice isn’t meant to look the same as other practitioners’. We are supposed to do things our own way, as long as it doesn’t harm anyone or anything.

Wild Crafting: Violet Syrup
Tumblr media
I am so excited to say that I made violet syrup for the first time this week!  I love wild crafting and have tons of local wild sweet violets so I couldn’t wait to try out this wonderful experiment.  Plus, its gorgeous and came out amazing!
Tumblr media
A word of wild crafting: if you are going to consume any wild plants, please make sure that you know and understand the risks.  Eating plants that have been sprayed with chemicals = eating the chemicals.  Also, be careful of leeching of other chemicals.  For instance, I love in an old mill town and wild flowers grow in many ditches on the sides of the roads.  These are NOT SAFE TO EAT because they likely have absorbed mill chemicals from the soil.   I collected the violets from the yards of two friends who I know care for their lawns without the use of toxicity.
Tumblr media
Firstly, you need wild violets.  I collected 4 cups worth.  The original recipe called for 3-3.5 cups.    The first step is to make a violet “tea”.  Boil one cup of water and let the water sit for 5 minutes - this is so that you don’t burn the color out of the violets with boiling water.   Then let the violets sit for 12-24 hours - the longer you let the violets steep, the better the color and flavor.  I wanted to make mine during the sunlight to get good photos, so I let mine steep for about 36 hours.
Tumblr media
Once your violets have steeped, you need to strain them out of the water. As you can see, the leftover “tea” was a beautiful deep indigo color.   This is normal - violet syrup is almost always blue at first.  You can make it purple again later in the process…we’ll get to that.
Tumblr media
Next, take your cup of violet tea and combine it with 2 cups of sugar on a VERY LOW HEAT to make a complex syrup.  This will take a while - be patient.   Do not increase the heat as this will burn the color out of your syrup and (I at least) think that the color is a wonderful addition to this recipe.   You want to stir this until the water becomes see through again. Your syrup will most likely still be blue though as you can see, the sugar turned mine back to a lighter shade more reminiscent of violet.
If your violet syrup is too blue, you can add a dash of lemon juice to it to color it purple again.  Be careful here - a little goes a long way - I made the mistake of trying it with a bit and turning it bright pink, not violet at all!
Then, let you violet syrup cool on the counter.  This is so that the sugar doesn’t crash back out of the mixture, undoing all of your hard work.  When cool, store in an air tight container in your fridge - complex syrup can keep for up to 2-3 months.    What should you do with your violet syrup?  It can be used in Spring cocktail recipe, as a drizzle over pancakes or waffles, or in any other culinary way that you see fit!  It is sweet and floral and pairs well with gins as showed below.
Tumblr media
If you’d like to learn more about the magical properties of violet, you can check out my post here.   And as always, if you’d like to support my work, you can Buy Me a Ko-fi.
Because I believe in credit where credit is due, I got the idea for this recipe from this video by The Green Witch on Youtube.

Friday, April 26th 2024 Sun in Taurus ♉️🌎 Moon in Sagittarius ♐️🔥
We’re fully in the happy-go-lucky and energetic vibes of the Sagittarius Moon today. Moods are finally lifting after the intense month we’ve had so far. It’s also a fairly quiet day transit wise so we can take finally take a breather for a change.
The Moon in Sagittarius will form a trine to Pluto in Aquarius today. This will turn up the volume on that Sagi Moon and it could feel like a fire is being lit under you. Relationships can also get a really nice boost with this transit.
We’re still within the zero degree mark of the Jupiter and Uranus conjunction in Taurus and with this Jupiter ruled Moon present, who knows, maybe we’ll start seeing the lucky and positive side of this rare transit.
Mercury is no longer in its backwards dance but do be aware of the shadow period of this. It can sometimes take a while to get our bearings in order to move forward.
Enjoy the light hearted vibes of the day as we step into the weekend. Go out and do something fun or spontaneous. The energies call for it! Enjoy your Friday!
