Causes of PC & hireling deaths during 3 years of one D&D campaign, from “It’s a Good Day to Die” by Lyle Fitzgerald in The Dragon 20, TSR, November 1978.  The author notes that this was primarily a wilderness campaign, and estimates they saw 1000 character deaths over 4 years but kept records of only these 600 in the most recent 3 years.  “Misc. causes” includes 50 different monsters, 5 drownings, 4 staked after became vampires, rockslides, freezing, plagues, Martians, run over by a coach, and “done in by a whore with a hat pin.”

UNION STATION
1:30 PM
Cops William Holden and Barry Fitzgerald race to foil a kidnapping plot in Chicago's Union Station. The film packs a double-feature's worth of thrills into its brief running time, including some brutality decades ahead of its time. Ace crime scenarist Sydney Boehm keeps the plot humming like a runaway train and director (and renowned cinematographer) Rudolph Maté makes the ride more vivid through use of actual locations. Costarring Nancy (Sunset Blvd.) Olson and a terrifying Lyle Bettger.
UNITED STATES (1950) Dir. Rudolph Maté. 80 min.

CAIRO STATION/ BAB EL HADID
3:30 PM
A newspaper hawker (played by the director himself) at the eponymous train depot develops a frightening obsession with a sexy lemonade vendor. That's the premise for a suspenseful drama which cunningly uses the bustling station to depict clashing strata of Egyptian society. Chahine's combination of gritty authenticity and psychosexual Expressionism created a landmark of Egyptian cinema—despite public boycotts over its unflinching perversity and politics. Costar Hind Rustum was nicknamed "The Arab Marilyn Monroe." In Arabic with English subtitles
EGYPT (1958) Dir. Youssef Chahine. 77 min.

ODD MAN OUT
7:00 PM
This intense manhunt thriller won the inaugural "Best Film" prize from the British Academy of Film Awards, and it remains one of the most highly regarded movies ever made in the United Kingdom. James Mason plays fugitive Irish Nationalist Johnny McQueen, roped into a heist that goes fatally wrong. Can Johnny navigate his way safely through a nocturnal nightmare of danger and deceit? Robert Krasker's cinematography is as good as his legendary work with Reed on The Third Man. An all-time classic!
UNITED KINGDON (1947) Dir. Carol Reed. 116 min.

VICTIMS OF SIN / VICTIMAS DEL PECADO
9:30 PM
NEW 4K RESTORATION  A film that virtually leaps off the screen. The music, the characters, the confrontations, the emotions—all boil over the top in this uniquely Mexican version of noir dubbed rumberas. Sexy Ninón Sevilla dances up a storm in a club featuring some of Latin America's top performers—Pérez Prado, Rita Montaner and Pedro Vargas—all while dodging a vicious pimp, defying her boss, and rescuing an abandoned baby from the trash. As André Breton is reputed to have said, "In Europe we talk about surrealism, in Mexico they live it every day." In Spanish with English subtitles
MEXICO (1951) Dir. Emilio Fernández. 90 min.

EAH VA/Seiyuus Part 2
For @sayuricorner's AU. Link to Part 1 here.
Same rules as my previous post, but I decided to look into more Japanese VA/Seiyuu's for this one. I also found a link for the Latin America VAs that I'll drop here because I had the hardest time finding Prudence and Charlotte's English VA (Erin Fitzgerald voices both of them) for some reason and they list both the English and LA VAs there.

Note
this is really sudden but any movie recommendations, im in a bit of drought for this to watch right now and i’m up for anything, especially if it’s horror related, or gay or can be interpreted as gay you know what i mean?
Horror and gays, two of my favourite things. Here's some movies that are mostly both.
My top choice is not-quite horror, and you've probably seen it, but just in case you haven't, Stand By Me (1986) is one of my favourite movies, and it's Stephen King, so it definitely has horror vibes, even if it's never out and out scary.
As for horror that's kinda gay? (I'll try to get the obvious ones out of the way since I'm not sure which ones you already know about.)
Ginger Snaps (2000) and Ginger Snaps: Unleashed (2004) feat. my favourite probably autistic, definitely (gender?)queer Brigitte Fitzgerald.
I know it's really popular now, again, but the old Interview with the Vampire (1994) was pretty queer for its time. Obviously the show outshines it in terms of queer content, but hey, I love these two idiots.
Tomie (富江) (1998) from Japan is pretty cool and queer. In a similar vein, Wishing Stairs (2003) (which I think is the third? one in the Korean Whispering Corridors series) still sticks in little queer teen me's mind.
Obviously Jennifer's Body (2009), this is like my comfort film lmao.
The Quiet (2005)
and
Excision (2012) feels pretty queer to me, but others might disagree. At the very least, Pauline is so wonderfully weird she's basically queer in my books.
All Cheerleaders Die (2013) was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.
also, maybe it's not overtly queer enough for other people, but the friendship in The Battery (2012) which is one of my FAVOURITE ZOMBIE FILMS OF ALL TIME is a pretty good one. It could be homoerotic if you squint??
Lyle (2014) and What Keeps You Alive (2018) are a very specific brand of overtly queer horror that is specifically, canonically queer, but not my favourite type of queer, if I'm being honest. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say more. Lyle is an incredible film, and not just because Gaby Hoffman is so so beautiful and absolutely just knocks it out of the park. What Keeps You Alive is... less good, but fun to watch with pals, I guess. It's that kind of horror.
Speaking of beautiful people, Don't Kill Me (Non mi uccidere) (2021) Alice Pagani and Silvia Calderoni I'm sorry? My gender exploded. I don't know why it has such a bad rating on imdb. It wasn't amazing, but it was fun and unique. Worth a shot, imo.
The Perfection (2019) what a fucking ride. Pretty queer. Maybe don't eat first.
The Midnight Swim (2014) isn't quite horror and isn't quite queer but it is female-centric, and I don't think enough people have seen it. It deserves a watch.
The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) was a girl's boarding school which already made it queer enough for me haha. Some good scares in this one. Better than anticipated.
And, speaking of boarding schools, The Silenced | 경성학교: 사라진 소녀들) (2015) is a Korean movie set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the '30s and idk man. Beautiful, weird, gay. It was good. If you like this one, you will probably like A Tale of Two Sisters (장화, 홍련) (2003) which is (probably) not queer but very, very good horror and very beautiful.
They Look Like People (2015) is another one like The Battery. Could be homoerotic if you squint. Obsessed with the male friendship in this one, and the mental illness factor. I really love this movie. This is the movie I would maybe double-feature with Super Dark Times (2017) for top five fave boy-friendships.
Raw (Grave) (2016) arguably not queer, but certainly queered desires or 'othered' desires. Another female-centric horror. I love this one. Blue My Mind (2017) feels Queer AF. It's like if Fucking Åmål (1999) was a horror movie. I also recommend Fucking Åmål, but it's not horror, it's just queer.
Thelma (2017) actually queer. Beautiful, extremely well-done, not crazy about the ending.
Would it be weird of me to mention The Shed (2019) Maybe I just wanted it to be queerer? I can't actually remember if it was now, just that the potential was there.
And, not quite queer but definitely good horror, check out Magic Magic (2013) if you haven't seen it. Girl Asleep (2015) is horror adjacent, not super queer, but also just... so weird and good and fun.

If I may be so bold as to ask...fuck, marry, kill, who would you pick between Ginger Fitzgerald, Kirsty Cotton, and Helen Lyle? (If you feel like it!)
Ask me anything!
Hi, lovely, thanks so much for sending this - I haven't played on a hardmode like this for a while. It took me a long time to deliberate, but ultimately: Marry: Kirsty Cotton. Definitely have had the biggest crush on her of the three, so I'm already biased, but she's a total badass and clever with a sweet side, and she later makes Hell Priestess? Girlboss! You get the best of everything by being with both the final girl and the monster, and the latter being one who knows how to party Cenobite-style at that, if you take my meaning! (I may not have Pinhead's presence, but I bet I cook better than he does lmao.) Fuck: This was the hardest pick, but ultimately, I gave it to Helen because she deserved so much better. We can have an academic relationship! Kill: Ginger is my darling and I love her and she's probably the closest to canon sapphic out of the whole list (depending on the reading), but I think it would absolutely come down to self-defense because there's no way she wouldn't get fed up with me some way and go in for the kill. I'd feel really bad about it, though!
thanks so much for sending this!!! <3333

tw: crime, drugs, death
twenty four, ciswoman (she/her), bisexual af, co-owner of the elephant’s trunk and part time bartender/bookkeeper at sleepy jeans, rosmont born and breed
illegitimate child of clive meyers, daughter of the owner of sleepy jean’s but didn’t know her father at all growing up
grew up with her mother, uncle, and older half brother. v much family against the world. but tbh, she considers everyone in rosmont to be her family
her mom and uncle started sleepy jean’s in honor of their late mother, jean fitzgerald
mom is still the manager/owner but her uncle grows and sells weed for most of his money
started the elephant’s trunk on a high whim with her brother, mainly started out as a place to smoke but now sells the weed that her uncle grows
HELLA smart and good with numbers - started doing the books at sleepy jean’s when she was young and does pretty much ALL of the business shit for the elephant’s trunk now
her brother does most of the ambiance stuff of the elephant’s trunk and she uses the business to showcase a lot of talent based in rosmont - lots of local musicians, artists, etc
big into social justice and is v anti capitalism - she was a canvasser for mayor delrosa and is enemy #1 to the meyers family bc they displaced so many people in the arroyo project
with rumors about the meyers gentrifying rosmont, she’s started digging into the family and found out that clive meyers is her father
went in trying to blackmail him but he ended up paying her off. highkey HATES herself for taking the money but hasn’t told anyone and has been putting the money back into rosmont’s businesses - her own, her mom’s, anonymously donating to other business. still feels like SHIT about it
CONNECTION TIME: her half brother/business partner, the meyers kids bc i need family drama ppl connected to her uncle’s drug trade, regulars at sleepy jean’s and the elephant’s trunk, childhood besties, ex from high school, one night stands, anything else you can come up with!!
VIVIAN BANCROFT ( pinterest, tag )
Tumblr media
tw: cancer, death
twenty eight, ciswoman (she/her), also bisexual af but less open about it, youtuber and owner of extrav-event, grew up on winslow hills but now lives in carlyle city center
the bancrofts have been in calderwood just as long if not longer than some of the established families but they used to just be like right hands and what not. now they’re like the puppet masters of the town, hella influential but like always in the background
her dad’s been the chief of staff for the mayor ever since people can remember. remains the chief of staff even after a new mayor comes in
her mom was the unofficial event planner for the town - super nosy but v charming. if there was anything more than a child’s birthday party going on, she had her hands on it
spoiled baby of the family
#instafamous and MASSIVE on youtube
her handle for everything is “color coded hot mess” bc she has FLAWLESS highlighting skills - both with pens and with make up - and she knows damn well she’s a ~hot~ mess
went to stanford bc her dad made her do it. graduated with a ba in business and english and was planning to do “study art” ( read: get drunk and dick ) in paris but that was shut down when her mom was diagonised with cancer
of course, everyone in her family knew like MONTHS before her and they didn’t tell her and she’s totally not bitter about that
ANYWAY she came home and needed something to distract herself from the fact that her mother, her hero, was going to die so she followed in her footsteps and became an event planner
started her own business, extrav-event, and her mom’s health took a turn for the better and everything was great
then her mom’s health went back to shit and she passed after a few months
that was four years ago and she’s still pretty torn up about it. she’s pretty much become the mirror of her mother - put together, a bit cold, quietly strong - but is also still that image obsessed girl who desperately craves love and attention. still a bif of a snob though
CONNECTION TIME: her older half siblings from her father’s previous marriage, her bestie from high school who is now her business manager at extrav-event ( this connection is sapphic af ), fake friends that party with each other, ppl she’s planned events for, friends of the family bc rich bitches flock together, exes, friends with benefits, anything else you can come up with!!

☆ LYLE FITZGERALD
introduction –
NAME. Lyle Jean Fitzgerald  PRONOUNS. She/her AGE & BIRTHDATE. 24 | December 9, 1994 HOMETOWN. Calderwood, CA NEIGHBORHOOD. Rosmont OCCUPATION. Co-Owner of The Elephant’s Trunk & Part-time Bookkeeper / Bartender at Sleepy Jean’s FACECLAIM. Emma Mackey
story –
[ cw: alcohol, drugs, cancer ]
Sleepy Jean’s had just been a pipe dream for Jean Fitzgerald, something that would never come to pass in her lifetime. Her family had been residents in Calderwood for generations and were never nearly as affluent as others in town. It didn’t bother them much, though stability was something they often lacked, much like the rest of the residents in Rosmont; but they found it far homier and welcoming than they did any other area of the town.
The bar was first her father’s dream, then her own - a place to congregate and have a few beers with people you considered her family. The bar was never built in her father’s lifetime and it nearly wasn’t built in her own, thanks to the cancer that had set into her blood. Her two children, Jackson and Leah, pooled their resources together and built the bar that their family had always been dreaming of. They named it after their mother, hoping to give her a gift before she passed. Jean attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and died in her sleep a few weeks later.
Running a bar proved to be rather difficult, despite the influx of customers Jackson and Leah had coming in. Neither of them had much experience in business and half expected the bar to crash far earlier than they had expected. Jackson was more interested in the side business he had going for him - growing and selling weed was far more lucrative than slinging beers around. At twenty four, Leah was expecting her second child, and she could hardly keep the bar afloat on her own. However, after spending time with a man everyone assumed was her baby’s father, she picked up more than a few tricks and suddenly, Sleepy Jean’s was thriving.
Leah gave birth to her second child and only daughter, Lyle Jean, at the peak of Sleepy Jean’s business. Lyle all but grew up in the bar, doing her homework alongside regulars and waitressing before her fourteenth birthday. She absolutely adored her mother and the bar that her family had built from the ground up. Her older brother would often play behind the bar and soon enough they were tending bar themselves.
School was surprisingly enjoyable for Lyle; no one else in her family really cared for it and her brother had stirred trouble up while he was there, causing Lyle to earn a bad reputation before she even stepped on campus. Nevertheless, she was an excellent student, even as a child. She excelled at whatever she put her mind to; however, when she wasn’t interested in something, she would hardly try but she was always a “delight to have in class.”
As she grew, she got more and more interested in certain subjects - math and art in particular. Her mother started entrusting her with the bookkeeping at Sleepy Jean’s, which made her gleam with pride. She constantly drew on her arm, walking into True Blue Tattoos and demanding that they tattoo this on her immediately; of course, she didn’t get a tattoo until she was sixteen, a gift from her Uncle Jackson.
However, before she got her first tattoo or entered high school, she watched as thousands of residents got displaced thanks to the Meyers and their project, Arroyo. Overnight, the population of Rosmont nearly doubled, as the corner of town was one of the few areas with affordable housing. At fourteen, she started canvassing for their new mayor, Carin Delarosa, absolutely furious that people were uprooted from their homes.
The concepts of home and family were drilled into her mind since she was a child and, as a result, she considered anyone and everyone who lived in Rosmont family. She was incredibly close with her blood family; she worked with her mother at the bar most nights and she spent every moment she wasn’t at Sleepy Jean’s with her brother at their uncle’s house.
It was at their uncle’s house, in a bit of a weed-induced haze, that the pair of them had the idea for The Elephant’s Trunk. Their uncle Jackson was bemoaning about how there was nowhere good to smoke besides his house and her brother instantly jumped in about starting a hookah shop. His idea quickly spiraled into Lyle’s idea for a platform for local artists and musicians - most of whom she was smoking buddies with - and The Elephant’s Trunk was born. It was meant to be a safe haven for Rosmont’s residents, and anyone in Calderwood who wouldn’t call the cops on what was turning into a half-assed drug ring. Uncle Jackson provided most of the product that they sold and the rest of the business was left to Lyle and her brother. Lyle organized nearly everything, leaving the ambiance to her brother. The decor and food provided changed every week, if not every night, thanks to her brother, which all of their customers seem to enjoy - of course, high people are notoriously easy to please, aren’t they?
Lyle threw herself into her own business, working with the local tattoo parlor and thrift shop to get showcase their pieces, as well as scouting people who were displaced from the Arroyo project if they had anything to showcase or if they needed a job. She was splitting her time between The Elephant’s Trunk and Sleepy Jean’s, nearly running herself into the ground more than once. She’s started relying heavily on her Uncle’s supply of Adderall, which is a well kept secret from the rest of her family.
Lyle was perfectly content to work her two jobs, until rumors started to circulate that the Meyers family was at it again, this time coming for Rosmont. Lyle, of course, did not take this news well. She started working closely with the Mayor’s office yet again, though she was known to delve deeper than was legal. After doing some digging into the Meyers family, she uncovered her mother’s name and eventually her own birth certificate. It seemed that Clive Meyers had an affair some twenty odd years ago with her mother and the birth certificate of that child had been sealed after she was born. Of course, the person whose birth certificate it was could unseal it. Seeing Clive Meyer’s name on her birth certificate was a slap in the face and one that sent her reeling.
Shock wouldn’t begin to cover the amount of shame and anger she felt upon finding out about her father. She didn’t need to confirm with her mother - though she did mention that she knew in passing and all Leah did was smile - she had heard the story of the mysterious man who knocked up her mother and saved the business. She never cared for that story; her mother had built the bar on her own, she had raised Lyle on her own, she did everything on her fucking own. She already had her fair share of opinions about the man who got her mother pregnant, whom she’s affectionately called “sperm donor” her whole life, but to find out it was the man she had been battling since she was fourteen was a shock to say the least.
She gave herself a few weeks to allow that information to settle and approached Clive with fire in her eyes and ice in her tone. She threatened to come forward with everything, destroying the marriage many in town believed was a match made in heaven. She knew she could find more information if she kept digging but the realization of who her father was sent her for a loop; she had come to the meeting with far too little to bargain. Nevertheless, he offered to pay her nearly ten grand a month to keep her mouth shut. Taking that money was the worst thing she’d done in her life, something she’d tried to justify ever since it happened. She’d poured the money back into the local businesses in Rosmont; fixing up Sleepy Jean’s, hiring more people at The Elephant’s Trunk, donating anonymously to other Rosmont businesses but she can’t shake the feeling that what she’s done is despicable.

A lovely evening at Nat’s. Really, you owe it to yourself to take in a show at this great club. I mentioned last week that this was a set I wasn’t happy with when I first intended to play it, so I kicked it to this week. The addition of Diana Krall’s new tracks and adding a couple of funny novelty tunes made all the difference.
