Everyone who donates $20 or more and signs up on our e-mail list, will automatically receive the digital version of NOIR CITY e-magazine for a year! The current issue, our 40th, is concerned exclusively with Los Angeles. We explore the city in the classic noir era and in neo-noir films from the 1960s right up to today. It's a deep dive into cold, dark waters.
Your donations help the FNF locate, restore, and exhibit films that, without our intervention, would be lost forever.

TCMFF Day 4 afternoon and evening. Eddie Muller will be introducing CHINATOWN with Carl Franklin, 3:30 at TCL Chinese Theatres IMAX and THE ASPHALT JUNGLE with John Huston's son Jack Huston, TCL Multiplex, House 6, 7:45.
CHINATOWN (1974): In this critically lauded neo-noir, a private eye (Jack Nicholson) unwittingly sets up an innocent man for murder and then joins his widow (Faye Dunaway) in unearthing the corruption behind the crime in this physically beautiful but emotionally bleak neo-noir set in a morally bankrupt 1930s Los Angeles. Dir. Roman Polanski
Tumblr media
THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (1950): A hoodlum and ex-con (Sterling Hayden) hopes for one last big score that will enable him to go home to his farm in Kentucky. He falls in with a gang of small-time crooks plotting an elaborate jewel heist. Of course, you can never go home again. A young Marilyn Monroe plays a small but juicy part. The film was nominated for four Oscars including a Best Supporting Actor nod for Sam Jaffe as the mastermind undone by his passion for beautiful girls. Based on the novel by W. R. Burnett. Dir. John Huston

#TCMFF Day 3 First Morning Screenings Decisions, decisions. Eddie Muller interviewing Andy Robinson prior to DIRTY HARRY, 9:30 at TCL Chinese Theatres Multiplex House 6 OR a nitrate screening of NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES, introduced by Alan K. Rode 9:00 at American Cinematheque Egyptian? NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES (1948): Edward G. Robinson stars as John Triton, a phony vaudeville mentalist who is one day cursed with the actual ability to predict the future. Gail Russell is the heiress who seems doomed by Triton’s vision of her death. Or is it a scheme to steal her impending inheritance? John Farrow, a director at his most stylish in noir terrain, adapts from the novel by master of suspense Cornell Woolrich. In typical Woolrich fashion, the film careens from one revelation to another, dishing out info that forces the viewer to reconsider everything that’s come before it. Though many have tried, few films have been as effective at capturing the author’s sense of doomed predestination. Dir. John Farrow

WHITE HEAT
(1949): “Top of the world, Ma!” A G-man (Edmond O'Brien) infiltrates a gang run by a mother-fixated psychotic, James Cagney in a standout performance. This film marks the cinematic movement away from the traditional Warner Brothers’ portrayal of the gangster to the more cynical and psychological film noir interpretation. Virginia Kellogg garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story for the film. Pointless trivia: Naked Gun 33 1/3 borrowed the plot. Dir. Raoul Walsh
IN COLD BLOOD
(1967) Bleak adaptation of Truman Capote’s groundbreaking true crime book. Two men (Robert Blake and Scott Wilson) brutally murder a small-town Kansas family, thinking that ten thousand dollars is hidden in the house.
