"Country singer Dolly Parton wrote the songs "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" on the same night.
When the first song was at the top of the charts in 1974, Elvis wanted to record his own version of the song. Dolly was interested until Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, said that it was standard procedure that when the king of rock and roll covered a song - half of the rights to that song would go to him in the future. She refused it.
"I said, 'I'm really, really sorry' and cried all night. It was terrible for me, on the one hand, it's Elvis. People told me: "You are crazy." It's Elvis Presley...' but I just couldn't do it. Something told me in my heart not to do it and I didn't. I know he would rock with that song. But I couldn't. And then Whitney Houston came along with her version and I made enough money from the rights to buy Dollywood."
She grew up in severe poverty and no one famous has done more for the education of the poor than her.
In 1990, the percentage of students who did not graduate from high school in her hometown was over 30%. She introduced the "Buddy Program", where all high school graduates received a nice sum when they graduated. It wasn't just a waste of money, she personally came and explained the concept to them - everyone should find a buddy, and whoever doesn't succeed she will find one for them. Everyone had to sign that they will graduate and do everything in their power to ensure that their buddy also graduates. She taught young people about friendship and helping. The number of school dropouts dropped to below 6% and has remained so until today.
When 900 families lost their homes in the 2016 fires, she paid each family $1,000 for the next five months. When she came to the bank to finish the paperwork, she gave each family another $5,000 to find a new home. A total of nine million dollars.
Also, her work - Imagination Library from 1995, was inspired by her realization that young people in rural areas and poor families already fall behind when they start school and that this prevents them from pursuing higher education. The goal of her program was for every child in her district to receive one book, once a month, from birth to school, completely free of charge, without any conditions. It started as an initiative in her hometown and has spread to a huge number of countries around the world. By 2018, over 100 million books were distributed in this way.
She is also known for her witty statements, at the beginning of her career she said-"I'm not offended by jokes about stupid blondes because I know I'm not stupid... and I'm not really blonde either.""

OC Mundane Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @musewrangler !!
Rules: Pick an oc you'd like to talk about and answer the questions for them! Then tag ten people, or as many as you can. 'Underdeveloped character I adopted' is fine, too! Absolutely no pressure to play, though.
Also, if some of it can't apply to your ocs, just answer what would be the answer - like if they're in a historical setting, they likely can't watch movies, but what is a movie they'd like?
(Also, most people have many ocs, so feel free to retag people and answer as many times as you get tagged! Or get really wild and just answer for as many ocs as you'd like! :D)
Questions:
What is their favorite movie? I'm gonna answer this one for my OCs Jay and Leila, for they are a package deal. Jay's favorite movie is The Mummy (1999)! Leila accuses him of having a crush on Evie, which he staunchly denies, like a liar. He also names his ship The Wrong Side of The River, so he can say he's on the wrong side of the river (if ya know, ya know). I think Leila's favorite might be The Princess Diaries, but she has a hard time picking a favorite! Joe reminds her of Jay
What is their favorite season? Jay loves winter. He likes cold weather, and the snow!! Plus, it brings back good memories of snowball fights with his sister and parents. Leila prefers summer, as she has very low cold tolerance. Plus, she loves swimming
What do they find annoying? *snorts* so much. Jay finds a LOT annoying, especially... people. His bottom three, so to speak, are humidity, people who waste his time, and his mom's brother. Leila would immediately answer Jay. But she'd be mostly joking. Mostly
How would they like to spend their Christmas or equivalent holiday? Jay likes to spend the time with his sister and parents, and his cousins. Later in life, Leila joins that circle, too. She, however, will be going to several parties. And probably dragging Jay with to at least one. She LOVES Secret Santa and White Elephant, and likes to go out and admire everyone's Christmas lights!!
Do they play an instrument? If so, what? How good are they at it? Jay does not. He likes music, though! Leila might have rudimentary piano or harmonica skills, though! Emphasis on rudimentary, though
What's their favorite meal to eat? Jay likes mac and cheese! The baked homemade kind, with bacon pieces in it. His dad made it special, and Leila learns how while they work together, and makes it for him! Leila's favorite food probably varies wildly depending on the day/month/season/mood she's in. But she LOVES a good BLT, or any kind of sandwich. She likes to put the most random ingredients together, which Jay thinks is madness, though he reluctantly admits they're usually pretty good. Do they have a favorite video game or board game? Mmmm, I think Jay would enjoy Splendor. It's big on strategy, which he'd like. And he'd definitely love Mafia/One Night/Resistance/Coup. Spy games like that! Leila would also love the spy type games, but she'd also LOVE Galaga!!
Do they celebrate their birthday? Jay wouldn't make a big deal out of it, but the women in his life will NEVER let him get away with that. His sister, Ro, will ALWAYS bake him something and show up with it, no matter where in the galaxy he's at, and Leila would make him his favorite meal, let him choose what they watch without arguing with him over it for 15 minutes, and get him some small present! She, on the other hand, REFUSES to work on her birthday, and buys herself at least one present. Jay's not the best at gift getting, but he'd make an effort for her
What's their bedtime routine? Jay's just gonna brush his teeth, and get in bed. Then he'll probably read for a few minutes before he goes to sleep, either work stuff or whatever book he's currently reading. Leila will brush her teeth, wash her face, and then probably has some skin care regime I would not know the details of. Then, approximately five minutes after they've both gone to bed, Leila will message Jay some random weird question like, are lobsters mermaids for crabs, and Jay will respond with GO TO SLEEP LEILA. Once they're married, she's finally able to ask them in real time, and he's finally able to throw a pillow at her
What's an OC (or canon character) they like to spend time around? What do they tend to do together? I mean, there's obviously each other! And what DON'T they do together? They're travelling the galaxy on a ship together, fighting the Empire, so they work together a lot, plan for missions. They'll cook together, eat together, and watch shows together when they can. And of course, they do missions together. This usually involves a lot of Leila talking over earpieces and Jay being like, Leila. We are currently incognito, I cannot talk to you right now

what are your fave benvi fanfics? i’ve read all of yours and they WERE great so i figured you’d be a good place to go for recs 😊
awe thank you so much!! i love love love writing benvi and literally nothing makes me happier than hearing someone has gone through and read all of my fics lol. literally the biggest compliment as a fic writer!!! (i'm also working on another little drabble in which ben sketches devi for his art class, so be on the lookout for that!!)
as for recs, first off, i recommend literally all of @montygreen 's nhie fics. you can find them here. leila is SUCH an amazing writer!! (i have been meaning to read her ofmd fics forever lmao) literally anytime she writes benvi i go feral i am not even kidding. my favorites are probably this hang the dj au and this time loop au but seriously, everything she's written slaps.
second i also recommend reading @parkersedith 's fics (here) because they are also so good. ESPECIALLY so what about these feelings i've got. this fic. is one of the best things i have ever read. i have re-read it probably five times already. yes it's long. but it is so worth the read. literally better than most books i've read. i also really really love this soulmates au because it is just. so good!!!

I have recently read through printed version of my Batman fan-fiction comic book. We must emphasis the term fan-fiction, as I have no affiliations with DC comics, but I had been a fan of mainstream superhero comic books ever since stepping into a library at a very young age. This is the only Batman story that I could tell at this particular point in time, and as one grows older and moves on to other things, the world of comic books - particularly that of superhero comics - is one that doesn't seem terribly important. Perhaps if I was younger and had little duty, this could have been done sooner.
To describe the book, the story follows an Irish immigrant called Leila, who after arriving to Gotham City, encounters tragedy when her lover is killed by an anonymous assailant. This is a Gotham that has been transposed to Victorian Britain during the onset of its economic formation and growth. A grief-stricken Leila is eventually taken in by the retired industrialist Bruce Wayne, whereby she spends her time evading chores on his estate, whilst playing with the local homeless boy. Being fully aware of her master's previous life as the Batman, Leila soon develops a morbid fascination with the mask that he had worn some decades prior.
Outside of the evident themes of migrancy and the history, there are some philosophical themes that warrant our attention. Painting broadly, it is a commentary on the cyclical nature of violence, with our protagonist being sceptical of what the comic has termed the 'heroic project'. The heroism of the past puts forth the idea that our history is one of progression. For Leila, in her discussions with the elderly Wayne, she challenges such assumptions on the basis that there is no empirical evidence for it. Instead, she believes that violence is fated, and therefore as a consequence suffering is inevitable. If violence is dictated by fate, then no amount of training can avert it, which is why she believes the heroic project is ultimately one of failure. Although somewhat unpleasant, I think her fatalistic outlook is natural, and is ultimately borne from the conditions in which the character exists. This forms a basis for the horror scene in the book.
Some words on elements of form, and elements of style. It wouldn't be amiss to say that the bronze age era of superhero comics have been an influence. This can be attributed to me marvelling at John Buscema and Stan Lee's How to Draw book when I was about five years old. I'm also interested in the painterly arts as well, and find that there isn't much that differentiates 'pop' from 'fine' art. Without waxing lyrical on the subject matter, if one looks to how Buscema composes a scene in his loose sketches (consider Conan), you can see the human form takes priority; and the environmental, environmental perspective form, the mechanical, is secondary. This is how Baroque artists approached the canvas when they painted their masterpieces. Needless to say although I have tried to take a traditional approach (particularly with the cover), it should be said that there are some things the printed comic book can't do. To give examples, impasto and chiaroscuro generally doesn't translate well to the medium, as the printed page can't capture the nuances of layer and tone. The printed comic book that sits on a table lacks the grandeur of a large painted canvas on a gallery wall. Ultimately in spite of its creative efforts as a visual medium, the medium itself is a limiting one.

I've done it. I've finished the Magic Misfits books.
Right now im still in denial that it finally ended for me... I've cried the tears I had to cry, and now I'll say the things I have to say.
Now, where do I start. When I got the first TMM book, I was expecting a silly little children story that would make me laugh. But it did so much more than that. I don't know how, but it did.
Each of the characters have touched me in a way, and taught me things as I red the story.
Carter taught me that it's okay to have difficulties. It's okay if you don't have much, if your clothes are ragged, your hair is dirty, or your stomach is empty. It doesn't make you less than anybody, you're still able to do what you want. As long as you are honest, enduring, and keep hoping, you will find a home. Friends, family, people who love you for being you, no matter what you went through.
Leila taught me that it's okay to feel sad. What makes you a bright person isn't about being happy all the time, it's about overcoming your despairs, and keep going. The people who love will still love you, whatever you have a smile or tears in your face.
Theo taught me that it's okay to be imperfect. No one is perfect, nothing is perfect. Everyone has its ups and downs, friendships have their ups and downs, but that's what makes them stronger. It's being able to overcome it, and still love one and another, and yourself.
Ridley taught me that it's okay to be frustrated. It's okay to snap sometimes and have a hard time saying what you really feel. You can still find ways to assure the people you love that you love them, even if they have their flaws, even if you have your flaws, you are still able to love.
And how could I forget, Izzy and Olly taught me that no situation is lost. There's (almost) always time for a good joke. Rough days become stories, that you can laugh about in the end.
The Magic Misfits is way more than a children's story. It's a story about acceptance, hope, trust, love. It shows us that anyone can be anyone, there's always two sides of the coin, not everything is what it seems to be, nothing is impossible, together we are stronger, and most of all... Real magic can be anywhere if you look for it.
Truly, it has been a ride, and I'll still hold onto the hope that it might get a sequel someday. For now, I'll just go through my five stages of grief by reading fanfics, making some edits, and looking for TMM content in the depths of every media.
This story deserves so much more love and attetion, that's why I'm telling you, TMM fandom, what a wise "phsych" woman once said.
"Alone we are weak. Together we are strong."
What do you say we try to bring more people into our club? Because I will certainly not shut up about these books until I get at least one of my friends to read them.

This book reads like the way memory is pushed to the surface of the mind. A chapter will begin with a sensation—a smell, a taste, a feel—then memories will flood in.
The novel opens with Tequila Leila dead and dumped in the trash, and how, 10 minutes and 38 seconds after she died, her brain is firing up memories, letting the reader know the events that led her to her death. Through her memories we meet her five friends and are shown the beauty and tragedy that is Istanbul.
Many great things here. Gorgeous writing. Found family trope. But what stood out most to me is the intersection of the abstract and the concrete—of memories and events, of memories and corpses, of a patriarchal home and the sexual abuse of children, of conservative beliefs and murder, of religious beliefs and gravedigging, of regret and throwing out a corpse in a body of water—and how ideas, ideals and abstractions lead to real events that affect people, especially the marginalized.
Poignant and tender. But also brutal and tragic. And so full of love.
This was my favorite read of January and will stay with me for a long time. [x]

–* THE PAST / PRESENT
nate is the second youngest of five children (two older brothers – brian & james, one older sister – heather, and a younger sister – beth) and was born/raised in reno, nevada. his dad has retired but owned his own appliance repair business. nate's mother was an emergency room nurse, but she has also retired. his parents now both live in a retirement community in north carolina so they can visit the beaches in the summer season. his eldest sibling inherited the hackett home back in reno, where nate's comic and fan memorabilia collection is stored.
since there were five kids in the hackett house, it was always kind of a whirlwind. there were always birthdays happening, friends tromping through the house, holidays with extended family, and fights over room/toy/clothes sharing. the one thing that nate had to himself was his love of all things geeky.
none of his other siblings shared his interest in various comic books, card/tabletop games, and movies. he was free to explore those interests all on his own.
every week, nate would use his lunch money to buy new issues of comics being serialized. he would draw, at first, by tracing the panels in comics that he found the most intriguing. he branched off to drawing his own heroes and villains, writing storylines for them, and stapling together stacks of printer paper he had turning them into "comics."
the same store where he bought his comics in reno also held various tabletop gaming nights where nate met many friends who shared his interests.
nate got his first job as a sophomore in high school at the comic shop, it was where he spent most of his time anyways so he might as well get paid to be there.
when it came time to decide on after high school plans, nate's dad was urging him to take on the family trade of appliance repair. already, nate's two eldest siblings were working on the family business. one had gone to technical school to become an electrician and the other had done training in general appliance repair while apprenticing with nate's dad.
his third eldest sibling had disappointed nate's mom and dad by leaving nevada and going out of state to study communications. they wanted to be a journalist, not work for the family's appliance repair business.
nate was about to disappoint them just as much, he applied not only for technical schools but out-of-state colleges as well. the university of new mexico gave him a hefty scholarship, and the opportunity to study visual art, but to appease his parents he chose instead to go to central new mexico community college to study heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR).
he loved new mexico so much, though, that he made the decision not to return home after completing his associates. his parents were upset at his decision, but were still proud of the fact that he had chosen to pursue the family's trade with appliance repair. he made the move to roswell after living in albuquerque from the time he was 18 to the time he was 24. while in albuquerque he was working as an appliance repairman but he honestly hated having to constantly zip around from house to house everyday just to do his job. he made the decision that he wanted to work somewhere stable.
when he saw the lunar laundromat in roswell was hiring, he thought it was the perfect fit. he had the skills to fix the washers and dryers when they went down, but he was also could sit at the counter and read comic books during the downtime he had. he could also work on drawing his own comic.
currently his paycheck goes to four things: rent/bills, groceries, comics, and art supplies.
he still does some freelance repair work for extra cash on the side. but, you'll mainly find him at either the lunar landromat, forbidden planet, or at home.
personality wise: nate is real geeky, he appreciates a good pun and rarely takes anything seriously. he will gladly ramble on and on about anything and everything that is related to his favorite subjects (art, comics, magic: the gathering, pokemon cards, the star wars franchise, the warner bros monsterverse, and other weird old movies)
his favorite color is a red-orange, he frequently wears his red-orange windbreaker and a las vegas 51s baseball cap. he prefers dc to marvel, especially because his favorite series is swamp thing. he is most proud of the fact he owns swamp thing #1 with a 9.6 certified guaranty company (cgc) rating. this means it is in near mint condition and alone is worth approx. $1k. he also has a personalized autograph from len wein (the original writer of the series).
he frequently drives to comic cons in the western states (primarily CO, NM, AZ, NV, and CA). for his 18th birthday, his parents bought him VIP passes for san diego comic con which was like his dream come true.

It’s a staple of crime fiction: the dead prostitute left in the trash. The woman is anonymous, and is usually one of several victims: no one pays attention unless there are multiple bodies or a non-prostitute is also killed. It’s a trope, an inciting incident, a beginning to a detective’s story. But in 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World, the body belongs to Tequila Leila, and this is the ending of her long, lush story. She is a person who has lived a full, colorful life: there has been a lot of pain, but also a lot of warmth and joy, mainly with her five close friends. For ten minutes and thirty eight seconds after she dies, her brain keeps working, and she looks back on everyone and everything that led her to that trash can. The world, and the city of Istanbul specifically, might see Leila as disposable, but Turkish author Elif Shafak makes it clear that no one is disposable, not even a woman left in the literal trash.
The premise of 10 Minutes 38 Seconds seems like a set-up for a grim novel, a story of suffering and pain and murder. And while it does contain all of those things, the real story comes from the warmth and the love. The reader sees the abuses of Leila’s childhood, and the rejection she ultimately felt from her birth family, but is also shown the family she built for herself in the chaos of Istanbul. Interspersed between her dying visions, each of her five fellow outcasts gets a chapter sketching their own journeys. Then in the back half of the novel, when the ten minutes have long run out and Leila is no more, they are the family who set out to honor her and carry on her memory. True love is being there day in and day out. True love is going to Leila’s apartment and feeding her cat.
Justice is not the goal in this story. No matter what does or doesn’t happen to her killer, there is a Leila-shaped hole in the world. Justice is so far beyond what her friends can give her, that what they are all really striving for is peace, for Leila’s spirit and for themselves. Justice alone couldn’t give 10 Minutes 38 Seconds a happy ending, but peace almost manages it. Elif Shafak has crafted a beautiful story about love among the disposable, with the warmth to make it readable and all the more powerful. Shafak has found the joy amongst the tragedy and the gems among the trash and made them shine.
Would I Recommend It: Very strongly.
