you can totally ignore this if you want but i'd love to hear more about #5
especially attic wife kevin and miserable gardener jean's relationship before and after jeremy gets there
And I'd love to tell you more about it!
I really really love gothic romance, and due to a personal original project of mine, I have read a ton of classic gothic lit this past year. This au has vary sligth influences from some of my favorite works, namely Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Rebecca (and it's possible original version A Sucessora but that's another can of worms), and a heavy influence of my favorite tropes in general. I also am of the personal opinion that Riko has the makings of a great gothic villain and honestly he deserves the stage to be properly dramatically evil.
The setting is vaguely victorian, but since I love myself and don't want to bother with all the logistics for a silly little au, it is a historical work in vibes only.
Kevin and Jean's relationship is a bit hard to describe without giving the plot away or just rehashing canon, but I'll try. In this AU, Kevin, Jean and Riko know each other since very, very young; Jean was born to servants of Evermore, Kayleigh died in childbirth, and Kengo sent Riko away when he was still being breastfed by a maid because he suspected him of being a bastard. Life in Evermore was not as harsh as it was on canon, but it was still not good. Tetsuji was a very bitter, cruel man, obsessed with legacy. For reasons related to inheritance and his own weird attempt at rewriting the past, he always planned to have Kevin marry Riko when they were of age. What he did not plan on was the two of his servants would rob him and run away, leaving their young son behind and him in charge of a third, commoner, useless ward. Jean was made to work at Evermore as a sort of indentured servant ever since, but when he was a child, the staff took pity on him and put him to smaller tasks, ones that would put him in more direct contact with the other children of the house. Kevin always saw Jean as a friend, but to Riko he was more like a toy, and Jean was often the butt of the jokes and the target of their more cruel games. As they grew up, Kevin and Jean stayed close even as their interactions started to be considered improper. Kevin always mistankely believed that Riko had grown out of his childish distaste of Jean, but that wasn't quite true; Riko had just started tormeting him behind his back, and Jean wouldn't confess for fear of who he'd choose. Tetsuji was just about as cruel and punishing to the boys as he was in canon, he just had less of a reason to keep a close eye on them and so was more of a distance presence in their lives. However, a important distinction is that in this AU, he truly did see Riko as his son and heir and spoiled him a lot in the name of conving Riko to follow his goals. Riko is less obssessed with the father who abandoned him than he is with what he was taught was his birthrightm which includes his perceived ownership of Kevin, who always saw him in more platonic terms even as he knew they were going to be engaged. Jean and Kevin start a secret romantic relantionship when they were around 17, when Jean was moved from doing general tasks to being Riko's personal valet. They are 19/20 when Tetsuji dies and instead of things being better when Riko becomes master of the house, they take a turn for the worse shortly after.
Jeremy arrives at Evermore when he is 25, and Kevin and Jean are 24. In the years since Riko inheriting the estate, the staff has diminished way beyond what was actually necessary to mantain the house in good shape. There remain only his new personal valet, a couple of cooks, the now-groundskeeper Jean, and the chief of staff (who is Thea! I'm unsure wether her function in the house is more like a housekeeper or a butler so she doesn't have an official job title yet. But she does give Jeremy many ominous warnings and clues. The rest of the staf are also gonna be Ravens, but who is who is tbd if any of Riko's goons are properly named in TSC, which I suspect they will). ANYWAY! When Jeremy arrives, Kevin and Jean have not spoken (or exchanged any kind of communication) in years. They only know of each other what Thea thinks is safe to share without risking Riko finding out, which is not a lot. They would like it to be different, but both have lost hope of ever getting out of Evermore by this point. Fear not, however! Jeremy, as expected of a gothic heroine, will not leave well enough alone and will do his best to reunite him and free them. And it might even work out!
As my parting words, I can tell this project has a title (acronymed BNTB), will probably have three to five chapters, and I have made this moodboard for it:

Everytime it’s close to Christmas Jack is always getting a tree by himself. The reason for that is because his parents are always on holiday business trips.
So he always decorates by himself, gets the tree and other house decorations. Now he does have help from maids and butlers, but they leave to spend time with they’re families. So he’s all alone once it’s all done. he sits in the living room, Watching Christmas movies and just wishing someone was there with him to spend the holidays with him.
One year he’s watching home alone and when Kevin says “I made my family disappear.” With a grin, Jack sighs while eating a holiday cookie. “Trust me man, it’s not all that’s cracked up to be.”

(TOC) How would the ROs react to seeing the MC in a maid/butler outfit, like for a job? Like there's this new maid/butler cafe in town and hearing how good the food is, so RO (yea, even if it doesn't fit character wise, that's how good the food is) comes and sees the MC in the outfit. Complete with the MC calling RO Master/Mistress (it's part of the job you see).
Ædmund: Doesn't particularly care about the outfit, but would be very discomforted to be referred to as "Master".
Helena: Surprised, but enjoys the experience very much.
Teri: Probably was the one who convinced the MC to work there in the first place...
Charlie: Gasps in embarrassed horror and falls off his chair. Still comes back every day.
Xiulan: Doesn't actually realise it is the MC for about ten minutes.
Max: Their blush is visible under their makeup, and they speak even less than usual.
Dahlia: Secretly enjoys it, but acts calm and professional.
Kevin: "I thought this was a cat café..."

Do y’all remember those “kin eats” blogs? Those were the mfing dream.
I just saw a recipe link show up on my dashboard and I was sucked back to 2014 where I’d constantly see blogs on my dash responding to asks about what to eat if you’re a specific kin type.
“I’m kin with Kevin Free from WTNV. What are some foods that I can safely eat rare?”
“I’m kin with a werewolf, are there any spicy foods that you would suggest?”
I remember one of the blogs had a “cafe” sort of theme. Each ask was responded to in roleplay, as if you were coming into a cafe and being served by butlers and maids. Aghhhh my heart!! /pos

This is kinda of repost of a earlier text post I was just in the mood to play around with OC designs so I wanted to post it with the art for reference.
Batman DC Comic Spin-Off Idea: The Footmen
Basic Premise: Alfred, after suffering from another dizzy spell relises that he will not be able to be the Wanye Manor Butler for much longer. He gets the idea that hiring, training a handful of promising footmen that would later be tested and judge to become the new Wayne Manor Butler would be best.
After much arguing with Bruce and an agreement that the new trainees are on a very strict need to know basis about all aspects of the Wayne Family and a no know policy about the anything Batfam related. Alfred is giving permission to conduct his side project.
Alfred then proceeds to pick five people from various work backgrounds:
Booker - A former highly skilled and acclaimed bulter who use to love the service industry but after being blacklisted by Gothman elites he used to work for Has become bitter and hateful to his former passion and is currently an accountant.
Luciana - A recently laid off maid who's worked in all forms of service: concierge,  cook, housekeeping, childcare, uber driver ect. She's never had the money to take butlering courses but has always wanted to.
Jeremy - A clumsy, mess  busboy who was a beat cop but after an attack  while on the job by gotham villains left the force.
Kevin - Freelancer has no experience with service but has tons of expertise in more under the table services hacking, martial arts, weapons, (All things more on the Batman side of things)
Andrews - Former henchwomen for many B-list Gotham villains who deiced to change her life around after an encounter with one of the Batfam (I never figured out who)
The first part of comic series is mainly focused on what Alfred does which is taking care of the Manor, planning parties, dealing with nosy gossip reporters, gardening, cooking, social media, serving at parties, wardrobe management, schedule keeping, car maintenance, setting a table, bulter stuff ect.
Later on in the second/ middle part of the series the footmen start to learn about the vilgaliet side of their duties Like how to buy weapons-grade supplies without drawing the attention of police enforcement, hacking, surgery, weapon training, and light self-defense. (Tho this comic never becomes a superhero fighting group it's strickly a slice of life kind of comic)
Meanwhile while the footmen are being trained they slowly meet the Wayne Family first as their alter egos in the first part. and later on as their superhero egos and during these times each footman start a bond with a specific bat family member. As time goes on that bond becomes stronger intill in the final third act of the series.
The final section is all about testing and competing on who will take over Alfred’s job.  Each footman is being been pitted against each other for their various skills (Very much in a tournament setting lol). Tho during each test each footman one by one  realize they don't want or not really need to be the Wanye bulter they want to be in service to that specific batfamily member and they drop out of the competition.
Which finally leaves no one left to replace Alfred leaving him back to square one but by that time Bruce (after his own character growth in this comic) has accepted that the batfamily and support butlers can take care of Gotham and he can finally rest and retire releasing Alfred from having to be a butler himself.
They're a lot more little ideas fleshing out this main premise that I might post about later but this was pretty long so end with just the main points.

5 Ways to Know You've Got a Good Scene
Many times as an editor, I will look at a scene and ask myself: “Does this scene belong? Does it move the story along? Does it change the story in new and exciting ways?” Too often, the answer is, “No, it’s wasted text.”
I recently looked at a novel that had a fantastic opening. The problem was, that that great opening didn’t come until fifty pages into the book. Any editor would have rejected the manuscript long before that.
Every single page was well written. The characters were fleshed out, the character’s voices and dialog were convincing, the details of setting were great.
The problem was that those first fifty pages consisted of people talking, relating their backstories, and introducing themselves to the audience, and it just didn’t work.
So here is a list of things that you might consider when trying to judge if a scene is needed:
1. Do your characters do anything, or do they just think?
Too often, I will see scenes where characters just sit and think about what has happened. “How did I get in this mess?” The chances are good that this kind of scene is garbage. You’re trying to lead up to the action when you do this. Instead, let characters think while they are in action.
2. A character or a setting is introduced.
This can go, too. There’s nothing wrong with introducing a character or a setting, but you need to have something happen. Nobody wants to read ten pages about grandma’s kitchen, or get an info dump about the first seventy years of her life before she ever comes on stage. That’s all backstory. Yet when starting a tale, too often that’s exactly what we get. The author begins looking for a place to open, and decides to encapsulate the main character’s life up to this point.
3. Two characters have a conversation—but nothing changes.
Very often I see conversations that seem to be rather maid-and-butler, where one character says, “Gee, Bob, you know I think we have a major problem,” and the other says, “Yes, I agree.” That’s all a waste.
4. The scene happens in flashback.
In many cases, authors will try to drag in some ancient history that is relevant to the story, but the story doesn’t depend upon the reader knowing the information. The question becomes, did I really need it, or was it just window-dressing.
5. The action in the scene repeats something that has happened before.
For example, I’ve seen authors write a scene where Joe gets into a fight with his boss. We see Joe thinking about what he’s going to say. We then see a scene where he fights with the boss. We then see the boss repeating it from his view. We see Joe thinking about how it went. In other words, we’re shown the same fight from four different angles. In this case, the author is like a director trying to figure out how to film a scene from the best angle. He might try moving the camera a few times, but for the purpose of the story, it’s still only one scene that he needs.
When I was young, I would spend a great deal of time on a scene or a description, often to find that it just didn’t work as well as I wanted. I found that too often I was straightening the deck chairs on the Titanic.
A scene can only be justified in a few ways. Before you write a scene, ask yourself, does anything change in the course of this scene?
For example, does a character get new information that spurs him onto an unexpected course of action? An example of this might be: My CIA agent suspects that he is being followed, and takes steps to evade his pursuer—ultimately getting into a shootout. This kind of change hints of a new conflict that of course can be expanded upon.
Does the character change their mind about something?
For example, perhaps your character Sarah has always thought cowboys were a bit . . . silly. Then she meets Duke, and suddenly finds herself wanting to follow him home to Wyoming. That emotional change in her, once again, leads to an expanded story.
Sometimes when a character changes his/her mind, it’s not an emotional change but an intellectual change that occurs. For example, a character might be sold on the idea of taking out a new life insurance policy by his wife . . . never dreaming that she plans for him to die in the very near future.
All in all, the chances are excellent that if nothing changes in a scene, then it can be tossed away.
Never get emotionally attached to a scene. With each scene, as you consider details of characterization, character motivation, setting, and dialog, ask yourself, “What can I cut to good effect?” Get to the heart of the story.

Speculation Sunday
I wasn’t expecting to do one this week, but then we got some Content so here we go!
Tumblr media
So the DA socials gave us this morsel (it’s still a crumb, but from a official source lol).
That said, I’m not 100% sure what got going on here. Thomas / Rob is the only one not covered by the clapperboard. He’s at the butler position at the head of the table.
I’m pretty confident that’s Mrs H / Phyllis on his right, in her usual spot as housekeeper.
Then things get tricky. My initial reaction was OMG ANNA and while that looks like that could be Anna / Joanne’s hands, Baxter / Raquel’s looks quite similar, and that’s not a lady’s maid dress I’m familiar with (although it is similar in style to a lot of Anna’s). I also feel like based on idea that’s Phyllis, then the other woman would be slightly too tall to be Joanne.
That seems to be Molesley / Kevin on the end, which would support that being Baxter, but not like Anna and Molesley haven’t ever sat next to each other. That spot has also been Anna’s seat at times throughout the show, and Bates has been displaced onto the other side of the table before. They didn’t always follow the traditional servant seating arrangement patterns over the years, and almost never at tea time (nor lounging after dinner etc.).
There’s a hand on the other side that could very well be Anna’s, and her and Bates could be on the other side together.
Now, analyzing all this might seem trivial but 1) I need SOMETHING, I’m living on fumes here and 2) it might give us some hints, or clues we can piece with crumbs we might receive later. Or it gives us nothing lol
The person who I think is Molesley has a plate in front of him, so he’s there for tea time or maybe even dinner. So Molesley still is coming around (maybe better development on Baxley this time?? 😉)
This is scene 42, which based on the TV series’ Christmas specials (and their script books), makes me think this scene is a little under half way through. That’s not for certain of course, plus scenes can be shorter or longer etc. However I really like the idea of having a more “classic” servants’ hall scene more in the middle of the film.
As for if that’s Anna or Baxter... as much as I want A/B BTS, I also want A/B to get the hotel, so it can be Baxter there in the lady’s maid dress, fine by me ahem, lol 😉
Plus then we get Baxley! win-win lol
There was also a photo that we weren’t apparently supposed to see (you can still find it on Twitter, and I think it’s still floating around on here, whoops, but I’m not linking to it because Hugh himself has asked us not to post it), and I can confirm that Mary’s got a better wig this time! And Rosamund *is* in the second movie!
In terms of if the filming is close to wrapping, the costume designer still keeps uploading things and with present tense in the captions as if the costumes are still being worked on. That said, that could just be how she captions, describing the action in motion.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It surfaced this Friday that Brendan was on a train to Edinburgh, and Michael shared on Instagram that he also was in Edinburgh. Now this might mean NOTHING and could be a coincidence... but 🤔
I mean, Andy wouldn’t normally be going with the family on trips, but it could be like when they used part of Alnwick in Northumberland for more than just Brancaster Castle in S5CS, where part of the surrounding town was used as York. Fellowes also has a penchant for getting all the characters to one place regardless (see: S4CS).
I remembered though about Phyllis’ comments about filming somewhere “slightly exotic”.  I had chalked that up to be Essex, as DA had never been there before (and Scotland was in S3CS), but Scotland’s not in England... and I daresay that's more "exotic", and ever so "slightly"... 👀
Shrimpie doesn’t have Duneagle anymore so it would have to someone else’s castle they are visiting. 🤔
I am thinking also about how the hallboy and the one guest star have already wrapped... maybe they aren’t needed in Scotland. And it's been many years now since they filmed S3CS in 2012, and that pre-dates this blog (although, I suppose it cooooould be in my main, as it was right when I first got into DA), but I feel like they had saved the trip up north for the end of filming (I suppose I could also compare to S5 with Alnwick, but can't remember offhand. They definitely did not wrap S6 up there, though).
Now, watch Brendan and Michael both just randomly be in Edinburgh at the same time (plus Alastair Bruce has got something going on up there on the 24th), and it’s nothing to do with the film but heeey!! It's Speculation Sunday for a reason!

Downton Abbey couple Jim Carter and Phyllis Logan open up on real-life relationship when the cameras aren't rolling
Jim Carter and Phyllis Logan (aka Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes) dished the dirt to us in an exclusive interview that you can read in full in this week's print edition.
The nation was bowled over when a certain butler and housekeeper tied the knot in season six of Downton Abbey back in 2015. Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) and Mrs Hughes’ (Phyllis Logan) marriage was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the 52 episodes of the hit ITV drama.
As the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the period drama’s debut film looms, we caught up with Jim and Phyllis to quiz them about what it was like making the film some four years after filming wrapped up on the show...
“Getting back together was like slipping back into the same old clothes,” Jim told us. “There was a feeling that this film might be the last!”
The pair may play a convincing couple on screen, but both actors actually have recognisable spouses…
Jim has been married for nearly four decades to actress Harry Potter star Imelda Staunton and Phyllis lives in west London with her husband of nine years, Pirates Of The Caribbean actor Kevin McNally.
"Do you socialise with other members of the cast outside work?" we asked.
Jim answers first: "I go out on hot dates with Mrs Hughes, Mrs Patmore, and Daisy the maid! We have hot dinner dates, don’t we Phyllis?"
"Yes, except I missed the last one because I was working," offers up Phyllis.
"Yeah, you were working," replied Jim. "So Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol), Daisy (Sophie McShera) and I could talk about you..."
"I was furious!" jokes Phyllis.
We had to know, so we asked... Where do you go on these dates?
"A nice quiet little restaurant," revealed Jim. Neither worry too much about being recognised, especially not Phyllis. "I don’t get recognised that much. They notice Jim mostly, he’s quite unmistakable!"
"When they hear the voice, that alerts them. Then they see the nose and the eyebrows and I’ve had it," he laughs.
"I had something lovely happen to me recently," Jim reveals when we quizzed him about what his fans are like. "We went to a Q&A event, and there was a guy in the audience who was shaking with nerves. He told us that he was severely autistic and he had made a film about growing up with autism in Ireland with the love of the local community.”
“He said, “Men like Mr Carson have been so important in my life, because their kindness has helped me survive. I have made a film and I want to thank Mr Carson who I think helped me make the film.” I thought, 'Oh, my God!'. It was really brilliant – he’s given me the DVD and I still write to him."
"I had dinner with Dame Maggie the other night," Jim tells us when we ask about his famous co-star. "She was on top form! Maggie’s a legend and I worry that when her generation go... will they ever be replaced? I don’t know that they ever will because the world has changed."

Jim Carter, Kevin Doyle, Imelda Staunton and Michael Engler
Going Back to Downton Abbey
by Jay S. Jacobs
Downton Abbey was served at the Philadelphia premiere party for the movie of the beloved TV series.
Show favorites Jim Carter and Kevin Doyle, new cast member (and legendary British actress) Imelda Staunton and director Michael Engler met with fans, doing a quick Q&A at a party at Stratus Bar on the rooftop of the lovely Monaco Hotel on Chestnut Street, before retiring down the block to see a preview screening of the film at the Landmark Ritz at the Bourse.
The Downton Abbey fanatics were out in force, many dressed in period clothing, eating hors d’oeuvres served by waiters dressed as butlers and bartenders dressed as scullery maids. A sense of anticipation pervaded the rooftop bar, waiting for the stars and the film. The show has obviously become a phenomenon over the years. So, what is it about the show that has inspired this kind of adoration?
“No idea,” Kevin Doyle, who plays valet-turned-teacher Joseph Molesley, good-naturedly laughed to me before doing the Q&A, “I’ve been asked that hundreds and hundreds of times. I have no idea. I don’t know if it’s a fascination with the period, or the aristocracy.”
“There’s no simple answer to that,” agreed Jim Carter, who plays Downton butler Mr. Carson. “Nobody has ever been able to come up with a simple [explanation]. It’s a combination of many things. It’s almost a romantic view of the past.”
Tumblr media
“First of all, I think whoever you are in the world there is a way in,” surmised Michael Engler, an American filmmaker who directed several episodes of the series and now was behind the lens for the movie. “There is a character – or characters – that you can relate to. Aside from things that everybody can relate to, there’s all these odd little things about what life was like. It is fascinating to learn about, to see how other people dealt with things.”
“People like to go back to the safety and comfort of it,” Carter continued, “to a time when things seemed to be that everyone was in their place and satisfied with their place in life. Life was simpler. The upper crust was shown to be incredibly benign. The working class loyal and hardworking.”
“I think we’re looking back with rose-tinted glasses,” Doyle told me. “It wasn’t as easy as it looked. It’s also just the characters. The characters and the storylines. I think that’s it. It could be set almost in any period and any place. It’s the mixture of those characters which make it memorable.”
“Everybody is looking for love,” Carter said. “It’s about romance. Daisy the maid [Sophie McShera] is looking for love. Lady Edith [Laura Carmichael] is looking for love. Carson finds love. It’s a mixture of all of those things. It’s relaxing. It’s comfortable. You can simple down with it. Like I’ve said before, it’s like getting into a warm bath. We can relax with this.”
Now, the cast of Downton Abbey – or at least the ones who live downstairs – are drawing another bath. The TV series, which finished filming in 2015, has become a movie. Due to popular demand, the actors are returning to characters that they loved for six years.
Tumblr media
This state of affairs was more surprising for some than others.
“We knew early on they were going to make a movie, so we were expecting it,” Doyle explained. “It was just a matter of getting us all back together again, which is quite a feat.”
Director Engler thinks that statement may be stretching it a tiny bit. “Not really knew,” he said. “Never really knew, and I certainly didn’t know that they would necessarily ask me to do it. It started to become clear at a certain point that the fan excitement for it didn’t seem to be dying out. So, if Julian [Fellowes] could come up with a story that he was excited to write, then I think everybody felt like they would make the effort to get together.”
Not only did they make the effort to get together, they picked up some new cast members on the road back to Downton. Perhaps the biggest name is British actress Imelda Staunton, who has played such classic roles as Miss Umbridge in the Harry Potter movies, her Academy-Award nominated lead role in Vera Drake and dozens of other roles on stage, screen and television.
However, it was not quite that big a leap for her to join the inhabitants of Downton Abbey. She felt at home “very quickly, because I’m married to Jim,” she laughed. “I’ve been with it for as long as he has. So, I felt very comfortable, but still very special. Very relaxing. Everyone was very welcoming, as you’d expect them to be. It was easy.”
Tumblr media
Wow, married. How long have they been together?
“35 years,” Carter stated.
“And it took six years to get into this show,” Staunton said good-naturedly. “I had to work pretty hard on that.”
In fact, after I spoke with them, Staunton explained to the fans that they had made Downton Abbey a family tradition for years before she joined the cast for the movie.
“I didn’t have much choice, but yes,” she teased. “No. It was lovely. Sunday night, family entertainment. Our daughter was about 15. The three of us would sit down and watch it very happily. It’s a feel-good thing. Let’s face it, that’s what we all need, certainly now. This movie came around at absolutely the right time.”
Ironically, after waiting all these years to work together, Carter and Staunton didn’t really get to do any scenes together. It was a matter of classes. Their paths didn’t really cross. She was upstairs with the upper crust; he was downstairs with the servants.
“That’s how it is” Staunton teased.
“At home as well as at work,” Carter good-naturedly acknowledged.
“We wanted to travel to work together about three days and got quite over-excited about that,” Staunton explained. “Then, really, he’s at one end of the dining room and I’m at the other. I didn’t even get a glass of red wine out of him. He knows his place.”
Doyle certainly was happy to return to his role for the film as well. “It was a treat. It’s an absolute gift of a part.”
Tumblr media
So, when did Carter and Doyle realize that they were part of a complete pop-cultural phenomenon? Carter allows the ubiquity of Downton Abbey sort of snuck up on them. When it originally ran in England, it did well, but wasn’t a huge success. It wasn’t until the show crossed the pond to the United States that it “took off like a rocket.” He knew he was in uncharted territory when he came to the US for a press tour for the second season – and people at the hotel recognized him by his eyebrows.
Doyle realized he was in a stone-cold hit when he appeared at the Screen Actors Guild awards and lots of the big stars – people that he was in awe of as a fan – started asking him if they could get selfies with him.
“Suddenly I was confronted by a thousand fans staring at me while I was staring at them,” Doyle said.
When talking to the fans, Carter told a story about that first US press tour. “We went to a reception at the British ambassador’s residence in Washington,” he said. “The great and the good of Washington behaved disgracefully, as if we were a boy band… A very large boy band. A senior citizen band. Then at 10:00 at night, we were whisked in a fleet of black, shiny cars to a private tour of the White House presented by the Obamas.”
The crowd whooped.
“Yeah, I remember those days,” Carter smiled, and the crowd laughed. “I feel the same. It was Michelle Obama’s favorite program. We thought, this is something special now.”
Tumblr media
Of course, it was so special that it has attracted some of the great actors in Great Britain over the course of the series, and now of course for the movie. So, what is it like to work with some of the greatest thespians on the planet?
“Umm… intimidating,” Doyle told me, good-naturedly.
Intimidating, perhaps, but also very rewarding.
“I started as a theater director,” Engler said. “It was really very gratifying, because it was like my days in the theater, where they really want to work through scenes together. They like being challenged. They like being in a process where they’re experimenting and playing around with ideas.”
And Dame Maggie Smith, one of the greatest actresses in history? A woman who has had a celebrated acting career that has stretched over six decades. Someone whose career is so celebrated that the Queen gave her the female equivalent of a knighthood. Is it intimidating to work with her?
“Yes. Maggie can be intimidating,” Engler said. “But she’s also delightful and funny and smart. It’s only intimidating really because she is so good that you clearly want to do your best and come as prepared as you can be, not because she’s difficult.”
Tumblr media
“Oh, she’s a sweetheart,” Doyle concurred. “She’s a pussycat.”
By strange coincidence, while making a movie about the royal family visiting Downton Abbey, a member of the royal family visited the set.
“The Duchess of Cambridge, who is a big fan,” Doyle told the crowd.
“Kate Middleton…,” explained local Philadelphia anchorwoman Rosemary Connors, who was moderating the discussion.
“The Duchess of Cambridge,” Doyle corrected. “We don’t presume to use those names. She was a big fan of the show. She was eight-and-a-half months pregnant. She insisted on coming to see the sets. We guided her around. She meant to stay for about an hour. She ended up staying all through, to the trepidation of security.”
Tumblr media
So, what were the most memorable moments on set?
“Oh, now…,” Carter mused, excited.
“Your wife is next to you,” Staunton teased.
“Seeing my wife across the field with 100 horses was very memorable to me,” Carter acquiesced, then said seriously. “No, what I loved most, and it’s in the trailer so it’s not giving anything away, but I did have a walk up the gravel drive towards the castle. In my head, I’m Clint Eastwood walking up there. I mean, clearly, I’m a fat, old butler in a bowler hat, but in my head I’m Clint Eastwood. That was my moment.”
Staunton didn’t have to think a second for her favorite moment.
“Sitting on a stage working with Dame Penelope Wilton and Dame Maggie Smith,” Staunton said. “It doesn’t get better than that.”
Now that the Downton Abbey movie is on the books, there is just one more question. Will there be a sequel?
“When the series ended, everybody thought, ‘This is great, who knows, maybe there could be a film if it made sense,’” Engler said. “Then it started to seem like it was a steady groundswell. Everybody was willing to get together. This was a big, hard thing to pull off. Just to get everybody together after all this time in this same tight period of time. So, who knows? Never say never. There are no plans. It’s nice that people still love us so much that they want more.”
