Pedantic Bookstacks - Hetalia Fic Recc
Title: Here I Am
Author: currypizza
Characters: Austria, Bavaria
Words: 8057
Summary:
It’s 2022/5782. Shavuot and Pentecost overlap directly, and Austria and Bavaria have planned a hike in the Alps to watch the sunrise on the morning of June 5th/6 Sivan. Over the course of the excursion, the two discuss the parallels between the holidays, and what their faiths mean to them.
Review: fascinating and relatable conversation on history and religion; the details bring the characters to life; funny quips and the conversation feels like it's between two actual immortals; lovingly written portrayal of Jewish Austria (a favored headcanon of mine)

Day 6: Are there other languages you learn besides your native langauge? If so, which ones?
[October 23rd, 2022]
Tumblr media
(Picture so very unrelated) Currently, I'm only actively learning Finnish, since that's all I really have time for. Eventually, I'm going to figure out how to fit Hebrew into my schedule, but for now the extent of that is muttering along with prayers and liturgical songs and hoping for the best.
In the past, I was also learning German and French. I stopped French after grade 10 because I just didn't have to take it anymore, and German was replaced with Finnish because I wanted to reconnect with my heritage and didn't have time for both. I would like to get back into both of those, but I'd prioritize French because I want to apply to McGill University in the future and their MD program requires a certain level of proficiency in French.
Just to summarize for my own sake, my language learning priority as of writing this post is:
Finnish
Hebrew
French
German
Hoogh.

World War II oneshot
This is a oneshot about my headcanon that Austria is jewish, primarily based on his last name. I also wanted to play off the idea of what would happen if one of the European countries was jewish during world war two.
Liesel is Liechtenstein and Miha is my slovenia oc
They were halfway to Berlin when Roderich Edelstein was asked the most distressing question of the 20th century.
"Are you a jew?"
The question had come after Gilbert had made the dangerous mistake of saying his last name out loud.
The two nazi soldiers whispered amongst each other for a few minutes before pointing a gun at him and asking the question.
Now, Roderich technically wasn't Jewish. If these soldiers cared to open up a history book, they'd see that Austria was, in fact, very, very catholic.
There was a point in time when Roderich was a jew, at the start of the 13th century, before the Habsburgs came to power; Vienna was a hub for the Jewish Community.
But he had kept that a secret, Judaism was still frowned upon, and Jews were denied fundamental rights; they were treated slightly better than they were everywhere else.
Even after the Catholic Habsburgs came into power, Roderich hadn't converted, they had just assumed he was catholic and never asked him to convert back, so Roderich didn't feel the need to.
He kept it a secret, in 1420, 210 Jewish men, women, and children were burned alive, and Roderich did not want to be part of that.
So when Roderich had decided to change his surname to distance himself from his barbarian father, he had chosen Edelstein. It was German enough that people wouldn't think he was Jewish, but it still held that part of him.
At this point, the only three people who knew Roderich was a jew were: Erzsebet, Liesel, and Miha.
None of them were here right now; even if they were, Roderich would trust that they wouldn't blurt it out.
That didn't matter now, the soldiers had asked him a question, and they were getting impatient waiting for an answer.
Gilbert was too busy laughing to be of any help.
"He's the most Catholic guy around. Did you see any synagogues in Vienna?"
Roderich thought back to his Jewish community; it was 10,000 strong last he heard, but he could still feel their pain. Roderich had heard rumors of the camps, no one had ever confirmed it for him, but there was a dull pain in Roderich's shoulder; he wondered if Gilbert could feel it too.
"Well?" One of the soldiers barked, "Are you Jewish or not?"
He would say no, it wouldn't be a lie. He hadn't been a jew in a long time, no rabbi would ever help him, and it would make his life a lot easier.
"What would happen if I said I was?" Roderich questioned, he knew he was treading on thin ice, but Roderich didn't care if he fell in.
Gilbert straightened, his face grew even paler, and his red eyes widened; that was all the confirmation Roderich needed.
"Roderich, could you stop playing these dumb games?" Gilbert turned to the soldiers. "He's not; he's just pulling your leg."
"I am, I am a jew."
The nazi soldier's eyes narrowed while Gilbert stared at him in shock. "You're going to have to come with us."
Roderich hummed, "Oh, I know."

Idk if my ask sent but in case it didn't:
As an Austrian, what are your thoughts on HWS Austria? Do you think he's a fun interpretation?
First of all I'm so sorry that this took me forever to answer D: It took some time to think about it.
The short answer is, he's a fruity little bastard man and I feel very well represented.
The long answer is, when I first watched hetalia I was really excited to learn that there was a character for my country, but I expected something completely different. I knew that the characters are supposed to be very stereotypical, but apparently what I see as stereotypically austrian is very different from what the rest of the world thinks (or at least Himaruya). What I expected was some type of farmer with one of those big hats and lederhosen (traditional austrian clothing) and idk.. more yodeling? Anyways, it was a pleasant surprise to see that we're not perceived as that from the outside!
What I like about him is the way his jokes are delivered, it's like he's seemingly unintentionally funny and that's something I can relate to a lot. That's also something that I talked about with @amber-isnt-a-precious-stone - that both Austria and England (in hetalia and real life) have this dry, british humor.
Something else that I immediately loved about him is his fondness for sweet things. I mean the food we have here is something I love and always miss when I'm on holiday abroad, but the cakes and especially sacher torte.. that's something I don't think I could live without. We eat a lot of cake tbh, especially when we have guests over or on Sunday's it's very common to go to a cafe in the afternoon and just have a nice cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake.
Oh, one more thing! (I hope you dont regret sending this ask, I promise I'm finished soon!) What bothers me a little (and that might also be the case for other people and the character's representing their country?) is his human name, because it's not stereotypical at all. I dont know anyone called Roderich. It's a very old name so that might be why it's so uncommon (nowadays). And his last name is also pretty uncommon, if you ask me for a typical austrian surname I'd say Mayer or Huber. But it's okay, honestly it's a fancy name for a fancy person so from that perspective.. it fits him!
I could now go on about stuff like how I perceive the relation between Austria and other countries in hetalia and in real life, but I don't really want to get into politics here so I will skip that. Let's just say historically speaking his character traits make sense (doesn't want to get involved in fighting and instead solves his problems through marriage lol).
Thank you again for the ask and I hope you dont regret giving me another good opportunity to ramble <3

Roderich Edelstein
For reference this is from June 13th, 2023 and was me discussing Hetalia names.
I love his name because it really started the jrod headcanons and I need at least one Jewish character in this show. The name fits him and it feels like a really solid name you could imagine signed elegantly on a paper. I guarantee you that Roderich's signature is absolutely stunning.
Now I just need to figure out a Hebrew name that he would have chose. I am open to suggestions 🥰

do you have hetalia fanfic rec’s? I feel like you have good taste.
boy do I!
These are like... all of my favorite fics, I'll organize them by ship. I BELIEVE all of these are completed. if some aren't then you can yell at me later.
I highly recommend all of these, they're all wonderful pieces of literature (and if they're not, then they're still fun to read)
FrUK:
If I Never Asked, Would You Tell Me?
- Human Au where Arthur and Francis meet on a park bench as children and never exchange names, but keep meeting throughout the years. It's very cute, and a short read!
Anatomy of an Anomalous Relationship
- FACE Family. Arthur and Francis are the single parents of Alfred and Matthew, respectively. Alfred and Matthew become best friends at school and shenanigans ensue for their parents. It's old, but so worth the read
The Difference Between Angels and Englishmen
- The first of many university au's on this list (I have a bias). Arthur is is med school and Francis is a art grad student. I can't recommend this fic enough. I think it's pretty well known in the fandom for being really good, but it's another oldie.
sign a new agreement with iTunes
- listen.. I'm so in love with this fic that I literally copy-pasted the ENTIRE thing into a google doc just in case the original livejournal page ever gets taken down. And if it does ever get taken down I'll enter a state of mourning akin to the people of England with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes.
-Anyway... it's very good. Please read it. They were roommates
Every Day
- Every day for four years, Francis stands on his balcony as Arthur walks by, and asks Arthur to marry him. I remember nothing about this fic but I know I liked it. Also it may contain ameripan, I don't remember.
What We Remember
- I also don't remember anything about this fic except that I liked it!
The Art of Being Emotionally Detached
- I think Arthur is a coffin maker in this one which... goals I guess.
PruAus:
The Shapes of Things
- Gilbert is a single dad raising his son, Ludwig. Ludwig watches as Gilbert falls in love with his kindergarten teacher, Mr. Edelstein. It's old but it's a very sweet fic
What Love Is
- This one is nationverse! PruAus from Germany's perspective, he learns what love is through watching their interesting relationship. Also has side notes of GerAus if that's something you don't like.
Whiskey Lullaby
-*Has a graphic depiction of suicide, so read at your own risk*
-This fic makes me bawl, every time I hear the song I have a visceral reaction to it. After Gilberts suicide, Roderich spirals downward while reflecting on the mistakes he made in the past. It's heartbreaking.
Hands of a Musician, Heart of a Soldier
- Gilbert is discharged from the German army due to injuries during WW2. He returns home to find his father harboring a Jew, Roderich Edelstein. They learn to live with each other.
- If you like Lily of the Lamplight by he who shall not be named, I highly recommend that you read this one. It actually has a good depiction of Jewish Roderich during WW2. It's one of my favorite PruAus fics, very much worth the read.
Other:
Upright Citizens (GerAus)
- Germany and Austria fucked during the Buon san Valentino strip...
Acceleration Waltz (AmeGer)
- Set in 1950s New York, when anti!German sentiment was at it's highest. Immigrant Ludwig finds an unlikely friend (and more), in Alfred. I haven't read the whole thing, because it just got finished in 2020, but when I started reading it in 2016 I was absolutely in love with it.
Staring at the Sun (Germano)
- This is literally the best fic I've ever read, please read it. If you don't like germano this fic will convert you.
- 1960s Italy. Ludwig is trying to find himself. But he finds a sexy-ass Italian man instead.. upgrades. This is a terrible summary just read the fic

okay so I MAY have talked about this one before I don't remember BUT
AusHun human au, they live in Vienna at the beginning of the story Erzsébet is a kindergarten teacher, Roderich owns a tailor shop; they have four kids Liesl, Ludwig, Edith, and Franz.
The family is going through a tough time, the shop isn't doing well and Erzsébet's teaching salary can't cover everything, Liesl is about to graduate and is infatuated with the idea of taking over the family business, refusing to believe that it's going under. Ludwig got expelled from school for reasons I haven't decided yet. Edith is on the verge of getting kicked out bc she's a firecracker of a child who likes getting in fights and talking back to her teachers. Franz is really little and hasn't purposefully done anything, but he kinda set the story off by... being born? like they had only planned on two kids, and lived comfortably with two kids. They had Edith and were still okay, she was kind of a surprise but it was alright.
Then when Franz was born is was legitimate panic, the store had already been going down hill, and it was very much "one more person in this family and we will be barely scraping by"; they figure it out. Somehow. But by the time Franz is two there is no more figuring it out, or scraping by.
Roderich sold the shop without telling Erzsébet. Didn't tell anyone for that matter, packed everything up, handed over the keys to the storefront two days later. By that point in time it was just costing them money, better of selling it than trying to revive the business. She was reasonably mad at him, because you don't make those decisions without consulting your spouse first.
As if this all isn't enough I have more set up conflict; Roderich is Jewish, Erzsébet is Catholic. Both of their families are unfortunately not okay with that, and when they got married anyway both got disowned. Through an aunt or distant cousin that Erzí still talks to sometimes, it got back to Erzsébet's family that they were struggling financially. and in an asshole move her family came to her and said "If you divorce him, you can bring the kids and come live with us" She obviously laughed in their faces, called them idiots and quit contact with anyone she was still talking to.
Roderich's family's opinion was a little more complicated; bc Roderich's family had been nudging him in the direction of a certain girl since he was a teenager bc y'know helicopter parents who have to determine who is worthy of their son. He actually dating her, for three years, they ended up engaged. Four months into being engaged he met Erzsébet, a month later he called off the wedding. And like, where it gets complicated on Roderich's side is he could have been happy, he could have made it work with his former fiancee. But when he met Erzí he realized he could have a marriage where he didn't have to 'make it work'. His family was more mad at him for breaking off an engagement, the fact that Erzsébet wasn't Jewish was really just a cherry on top in the situation.
ANYWAY This does however open the gate for someone else to make an offer; Erzsébet's parents had divorced when she was very young like four years old. Her mother had disowned her when she married Roderich, and her father wasn't extremely present. They spoke once or twice every few weeks, he sent her birthday cards, he had seen plenty of pictures of his grandkids, but they weren't part of each others lives. He hears through snippets of things she says, and the grapevine that they're struggling, and says "Why don't you come live with me in Budapest?" she confirms he's serious (and has the room for six extra people) and then promises to talk to Roderich about it.
Long story short, they move to Budapest right before the new school year starts. I know that's all just backstory but the rest of the fic is kinda boring and not completely thought out yet. Liesl is out of school and figuring out being an adult in an entire new place than where she grew up, Ludwig is getting some stereotypical Coming Of Age lessons, Edith probably gets one of those 'troubled kid finds an outlet and is actually really good at it' arcs, Franz just chills and becomes his grandpas favorite. Roderich reopens his shop, Erzsébet gets to reconnect with her father (some very sappy scenes to follow). It's just a... the world was falling apart but we got through it and everything okay now.

Prussia and Austria Friendship Headcanon
Right before or after the Anschluss (so, in 1938), Prussia broke into Austria’s house and started destroying his IDs and various documents with his human name (the one Himaruya gave him, so Roderich Edelstein). Prussia had broken into Austria’s house to mess with him before, so at first when Austria caught Prussia rifling through his things, he was annoyed like usual. But then Prussia explained that he was legitimately concerned. Austria could be in danger from humans if he was using an ID with a Jewish last name for travel or other purposes. Prussia may have had issues with Austria in the past, but he didn’t hate the guy and absolutely didn’t want anything bad to happen to Austria because of the crappy government annexing him. Austria started helping Prussia destroy all those documents, and later Prussia helped him replace them with new ones. Austria went by Roderich Beilschmidt until the N*zi regime was no longer in power; then he went back to using Roderich Edelstein once he was safe to do so.
After this incident, Prussia and Austria became a lot closer. They might bicker and snipe at each other occasionally, but there’s real warmth and mutual respect. Austria is grateful Prussia did what he could to help him back then, and  Prussia is glad he got to stick it to those anti-Semitic scheissekopfs.
