Character Update
Wipples the cat was named after an IRL cat. Unfortunately, irl Wipples came to an untimely end and the owner requested I change CGI Wpples's name to something else. Henceforth, Wipples the Cat is now Gazpacho the cat (Gus for short). I have decided that as a kitten, he climbed through an open kitchen window and fell face-first into a bowl of gazpacho that Pearl was going to have for lunch.
Tumblr media
I feel like the smart thing to do is go back and update all my posts to add Gazpacho to the tags, but that feels like a lot of work...

So here are some of my imaginings of what could have happened with human star. This isn’t a full rewrite (in case it seems choppy), just me rambling about many of the ideas I had. Though, I may write some of these. But please, ask or talk to me about it. It's so much fun to imagine. This is a long post, so I've put the rest under the cut. ✨
Some people have mentioned Star being mute. I’m not sure if they are actually referencing the star we got in the movie, so I’m just going to say that his voice is the last thing he finds in his humanoid form, and that he does in fact, mime things. If he talks, it's very little.
I want to know more about Asha’s father and her relationship with him. He seemed to be some sort of philosopher or astronomer. He drew maps, and he always recognized a certain star that only appeared at certain times of the year, right above the castle, and moved in an arc over it with the Earth's rotation. He called it the wishing star. You know, the star. He had a powerful wish too—one that he gave to King Magnifico before he tragically passed. But, he doesn't have full control over the wishes... yet. The wishes of those who have passed ascend to the stars, where they hold them safe.
Perhaps she's already known about his evil intent, even though no one else does. I'd also like to see more of Asha's flaws. If she's caring or people pleasing to a fault, I almost want to see it cause a problem. Maybe she accidentally impedes on something important and completely messes it up, possibly even the wish ceremony in an attempt to get her grandpa's wish granted (to inspire future generations). It would give more impact before she runs into the woods and sings This Wish. (just please don't say "throw caution to every warning sign" cause... what?)
Do you know the concept art of when Star first comes down to Earth? I think after Star's light envelopes the island, he would awaken in the forest, confused as to why he is so far from home. Asha finds him, and of course, is equally confused. He sees her and slowly realizes that she is the one who called him down and that he's on Earth.
I would want to see lots of shapeshifting here. There could be a song as he slowly gives his magic to the trees and the animals that explains who exactly he is, and by extension, how the galaxies, planets, and life are formed. He personally knows many of the stars we know about (you know, like Spica or Arcturus). In fact, when she tells him about her seven friends, he is reminded of seven stars he knows deeply, the Pleiades (his guiding constellation). She knows about them because her father showed her.
I think that concept would also give more depth and lore to King Magnifico’s sorcery. What he keeps in his room are akin to chemistry experiments, if you will, so it’s clear that he practices some sort of alchemy. He could have only retrieved magic like this from the cosmos, possibly the life force of the stars. She asks him if he can grant her grandfather’s wish. He shakes his head or signals. He can't. And of course, he doesn’t know or have the wish. King Magnifico is in possession of it.
Imagine they fly, like a Peter Pan-esque way (or maybe in the end, because they have to stay hidden). I want her to talk more about her father. Maybe he has an observatory. If the stars need to align a certain way for Magnifico to perform an ultimate spell, one of the keys to stopping him would be there.
He's still naive to exactly what's going on, yet he imparts wisdom, almost by accident, that make Asha realize. Since he isn't fully familiar with humans and their world, he probably messes with some items he sees and definitely knocks some things over. (I don’t know why but I imagined him hiding inside a jar.) But he's so fascinated by the smallest things in the world. Asha doesn't want him to be seen because she knows they'll be in deep trouble, but what if Star runs off out of curiosity and impresses a small crowd of people with his magic tricks. But of course, someone goes to pass along the word and soon enough, it'll reach Magnifico. I'm sure he wants to meet her friends too, but she has to try to hide him as she interacts with them and maneuvers her way up the castle.
I want the idea of humans being like stars of our own to slowly come to light over the story rather than in one song. Star can see all the wishes in people’s hearts, like the cores of stars. He can see each person for who they truly are at the core of their beings, in their purest forms. He wants to show her at some point, so, he takes her hands. And he feels a profound love for the first time. He feels the love she has in her heart for her family and her. For the first time, he can see where the wishes he hears come from, because...
After everything, Asha and Star finally reach the castle and find all the wishes. Star instantly recognizes their forms. And here, Asha finally sees the wishes of her family—her mother, her grandfather. But one is missing. Some people have died never knowing their wishes they gave to King Magnifico. Star has seen and held them before, because the wishes of those who have passed ascend to the stars, where they hold them safe. That includes Asha’s late father’s. And Star is the one holding it safe. So, he reaches deep within himself and pulls it out. She hold it in her hands, and it breaks her heart. His wish was for all people to know that in a world of matter who they are, their dreams are within reach. They shouldn't ever stop looking up because someone told them they can't. If they're going to sing At All Costs with the original words, this is when it would be. It would be so profoundly magical, like an I See The Light kind of moment. Their love for these precious wishes and for each other. Imagine, Asha’s holding her father’s dream in her arms, and very carefully, she passes it back to Star for safekeeping, yet at the same time, they’re holding each other.
Imagine, just imagine, that he was the star on her father's map.
Magnifico still ultimately wants to capture Star and keep him inside his staff forever so he can dictate the world. And Star holds some of the wishes of the passed? That’s even better for his quest for power. In fact, he aims to become so powerful that he can pull the wishes down from the heavens. He could extend his power into the cosmos. And if Asha made a mistake earlier in the film, people would be much more likely to believe him at first when declares Asha a traitor and lies that she's the one who destroyed their wishes. Also, he needs a bit more epic of a villain song.
I think they would be forced into hiding. Asha's friends are there and they still sing Knowing What I Know Now complete with some Star shapeshifting.
Her friends hadn't showed up as promised. Perhaps Magnifico had put an end to their uprising. Either way, Asha and Star confront him. Star is the last person she has by her side, and with a few words of his spell, he sucks him into his staff. He finally has the power he's craved. He can pull the wishes down from the heavens and crush them. She is alone when he commands the clouds to cover the stars and says his line of “There will be no more hope" (I don't remember the exact wording). She looks out to see the kingdom in hiding, wondering if her friends are really there like they said they would be. It's dark and storming, and she's so alone in the moment that it seems that Magnifico has already won. There are no stars in sight. Yet, she remembers how Star showed her that each person is made of everything that comes from the stars. So she begins to sing: So I look out to the stars just like me.
It turns out, her friends are there. They show up right when she needs them most and begin to sing with her, their hearts alight like the cores of stars. It's not enough. But the kingdom sees hope, and that's when they begin to come out. I mean from across the island, from their homes. He still casts a spell, and while weighed down, they still sing. That way, Magnifico's "mirror mirror" sequence could also extend across the whole island.
And Star breaks free. He ascends, high, and the wishes Magnifico attempted to pull down to Earth are let free. And when the clouds dissipate, he's sucked into his staff and defeated.
It would honest be funny if Star plummeted just to appear over the balcony and surprise her. And then... this is when they kiss.
So, she reunited with her loved ones as was in the ending, and of course, he must return to the heavens soon. (And be the guiding star). Asha loves him, but she loves her friends and family too, and her kingdom needs her. So, he bestows a new gift on her that she's worthy of. She would become the first fairy godmother and have the ability to commune with the stars. She can go between the heavens and Earth. She would have a dress transformation that would be reminiscent of the one in Cinderella. Sabino also begins to pluck his lute and play When You Wish Upon a Star in the end. When Star does return home, maybe, he leaps like a shooting star over the castle. Get it?
I appreciate that the setting alludes to the various cultures of it's inhabitants from around the Mediterranean region (I would love if even more variety was shown as a Mediterranean person myself), but I really want more of Asha's specific cultural background to be portrayed. I'm trying to think exactly what role Queen Amaya would have in the narrative. I've heard her and Magnifico were supposed to be the first villain couple which sounds so cool! I'm trying to imagine how exactly the dynamic would be there. If you have any ideas then lmk. ^^

(counting the seconds anon here) If I didn't share an apartment with other people and I wasn't back to my status as a student, I would LITERALLY have already gone to a shelter to adopt a black cat and name it Cosmo!!!!! I'll keep it as a suggestion for when I finally am able to do it (once I go back to work), but the pain is REAL!
Aye taking on the dad role so effortlessly while Akk keeps freaking the hell out but also falling even deeper in love is too much for my poor heart 🥺😭💕
(I also just saw the other anon 👀) Kan as a matchmaker?? Ohhhhhhhhh this will be amazing. Both he and Thua assisting AkkAyan in their magical baby acquisition is as hilarious as it is sweet.
Sarah, last week you were generous with us so I am not expecting anything this week! Please feel free to ignore me. BUT! Would you, maybe, perhaps, just MAAAYBEEEE, pretty please be willing to share another eeny-meeny sneak peek from this week's chapter? Maybe of Aye going full-on dad-mode with baby Dao? 🥰 Or whatever you'd feel comfy!
Anyway, as always, anxiously waiting for Stardust! Thank you so much 💜✨
Sure thing! Here is a brief sneak peek:
The next morning, Akk woke up alone and for one harrowing second, he thought it had all been a dream. The grief that washed over him then was like nothing he’d ever felt. It was worse even than watching Aye storm out of the home they had built together and knowing that he wouldn’t come back. It was finally being given everything he had ever wanted and watching it disappear in the blink of an eye.
But then, from down below, he heard the joyous trill of a baby’s laughter. He sat up, revitalized by the sound, and then followed it down the stairs as if it was a siren’s song. It wasn’t until he walked into the kitchen to find Aye feeding the child pieces of what looked like mashed-up banana that he finally let himself believe it was real.
The baby saw him before Aye did.
Mouth full, he began bobbing up and down in his high chair, reaching towards Akk, and Akk was positive no one had ever been that happy to see him in his life. He couldn’t help but smile.
“Swallow first, kid,” he said helpfully. The baby did, freeing himself to vocalize his affection instead, but Akk had already turned his attention to Aye who was staring at him with a spoon of mush still outstretched towards the child.
Aye looked, in a word, delicious. He was still in his pajamas, hair mussed, face puffy from sleep. He looked like the Aye Akk remembered. The Aye from before. The Aye that was his. Akk hesitated before coming closer, scared Aye might have decided to hate him overnight, but Aye just looked him over from top to bottom and then turned back to the baby, offering him the spoon in his hand. The baby took the bite gratefully.
“Do you want to try?” Aye asked, glancing over his shoulder at Akk. Akk was surprised to find that he did.
“Um, yeah. I mean, I guess I can…” He pulled up a chair and Aye passed him the spoon. Akk must have hesitated for just a second too long because Aye laughed.
“Don’t be scared. He’s not going to bite you. He’s barely got any teeth.”
Akk hadn’t known it was possible to feel pride watching a baby eat, but as he took the spoonful of banana Akk offered him, for the first time in a while, Akk felt like he had actually accomplished something. The baby preened, smacking his lips happily. His joy was infectious.
“See,” Aye said encouragingly as Akk scooped another spoonful of baby food out of the jar. “I told you it wasn’t hard.”

Every time is different.
The first time, he hadn’t died, he was just taking on a new vessel, letting Jimmy Novak’s soul stretch to fit the cosmos, but it felt the same as coming back to life: the awareness. The overwhelming nature of the human senses pressing in before he could tuck them away with his grace.
The actual first time, and the second time, it doesn’t feel like much. A snap of an angry angel’s (or fallen angel’s) fingers, and he’s gone. A moment later, he’s back, reformed with his vessel.
(The second time, the Righteous Man asks if he’s God. Castiel thinks perhaps God wouldn’t die so much.)
The third time, Castiel chooses his death and goes willingly to the water. It’s the only way to protect the people he loves, and--
Well that’s definitely new.
(Every time is different.)
He comes back after that with no memories of the people he loves, but he follows along with what seems to be his place in the world, the power crackling at his fingertips finally unlocked with the help of some old friends.
(One of them, more than a friend. The acquisition of human emotion is complicated. And profoundly unexpected.)
The fourth time, Castiel (well, Cas now) feels it the whole way through. He’s human, and it’s a bitter exercise in trust when the demon’s knife digs in. Waking up from that is unexpected, but then again, the person who bargains for him, who tells him never do that again, is Dean Winchester, and Cas is the one who first brought him back to life.
A lot happens after that. Enough years pass without getting stabbed or blown up or dragged into a reservoir by Leviathans that he gets oddly comfortable. Maybe too comfortable, but after Dean nearly kills Cas with his own blade and then doesn’t, backs away...
Cas starts to feel invincible.
He’s forcibly reminded that he’s wrong, very, very wrong when Lucifer’s angel blade slices through both his physical body and his grace. The last thing Cas is cognizant of as his grace pours out is Dean.
Cas bargains his way back to life this time, because God isn’t particularly interested in bringing him back, and he’s gone somewhere Dean, or anyone else, for that matter, can’t go, and the Empty agrees, on the condition that when he lets himself be truly happy, he’ll go away forever.
It seems only fair, Cas thinks, and when he returns, he’s fairly certain that moment of true happiness will never happen. There’s arguments, there’s danger, there’s the knowledge that fate was never on their side, there’s Jack (alive and dead and alive again and overwhelmingly trustful of Cas, an angel who has fallen apart so many times that he often wonders if he got stitched back together wrong one of those times), and then Dean’s blame and an argument and Cas leaves and comes back and then--
Well.
We came to an understanding, so spare me your contempt Castiel, the self-hating angel of Thursday. You know what every other version of you did after "gripping him tight and raising him from Perdition?" They did what they were told. But not you. Not the "one off the line with a crack in his chassis."
Cas wants to be hurt. He’s an angel. God is supposed to care about him. But he doesn’t. God is cold and unfeeling, only wanting to use them as his pawns. The difference now is that Cas sees that the fact that he did get stitched back together wrong, that he’s got that crack in his chassis, that he feels, is a good thing. It’s a strength.
It allows him to save the people he cares about, one last time, so that they can save the world.
I cared about the whole world because of you, he says.
I love you, he says.
And that’s it.
The darkness takes him, one last time.
*********************
Except.
Except.
Well, Cas is awake right now, and it’s morning. He’s dimly aware of sunlight filtering through the window, of a warm quilt, of a mason jar full of flowers on the bedside table. He keeps waking up like this, because he forgot that the person he loved enough to die for is extraordinarily stubborn, and the Empty isn’t actually a place where no one can go, apparently.
There’s noise downstairs, and Cas is fairly certain it’s his family (his family). Dean, making pancakes in a stupid Kiss the Cook apron (Cas has kissed the cook, actually, that’s something he does now, now that they’ve all saved the world). Jack, pouring too many chocolate chips into the batter. Sam, nursing a hangover and Eileen making fun of him. The promise of a sunny day ahead.
It’s not all easy, it never has been, but now they’ve all got a chance to figure things out. No more apocalypse, no more uncaring God, no more wondering if he’s broken.
For the first time, I feel, Cas had said, years ago, and another angel come to earth had replied, it gets worse, but what she didn’t know is that it also gets better.
Cas goes back to sleep.
He knows he’ll wake up.

Turtleverse reacting to Mutant Mayhem!!!
!!!Minor spoilers ahead!!!
Okay so like in a weird sci-fi universe pocket dimension kind of like Spiderverse where all iterations of the Turtles collectively hang out and can see into each other's dimension via computer screen or whatever.
Each time there’s a new iteration of the Turtles it's this HUGE event where EVERYBODY comes over to have what they call a "watch party". Basically, just jumbles of video compilations they were able to capture and put together in a sort of movie-esque style to get a feel to how the new Turtles are this time round. It's very exciting and fun mainly due to the fact that in most dimensions there aren't any other "mutant turtle" around so they all feel a lot less alone with every new version of themselves they discovered. There’s always a different reaction whenever these events happen, both positive and negative, but they are all united under that fact that at their very core they understand each other in a way no one else in the entire multiverse ever will.
So, they catch wind of a new universe popping up into the cosmos and central hub is all a buzz! As much as there is excitement there is also this underlining anxiousness that always sits at the pit of their stomach. Because sure they could be finding this cool brand new universe with a unique style and story just like the Rise!Turtles or they could find something so completely heartbreaking and dark yet are forbidden to interfere least they destroy the multiverse, like the Last Ronin universe (every Mikey in the Turtleverse was hugged and coddled to death for nearly a week after that event).
The watch party happens and they all get their first glimpse ever at the new universe and the Turtles in it. Within the first few minutes of seeing these new turtles it is then they are hit, practically gut punched, with the realization that these guys…are children. Sure THEY were basically children when they first started out the whole crime fighting thing but for some reason this time it hits different. Like here they are watching these FOUR FUCKING CHILDREN on the screen, out in a dangerous city unsupervised, where is their father?! Oh there he is! Oh no he’s an anxious mess! He’s trying so hard to be good dad tho! Please boys just listen to him! Why are you fighting criminals at night? You are fourteen!
The collective of the Turtleverse were just SO stressed watching these boys fight their way through the criminal underground. Sure, they were impressed by the boys is skills and strength and they can most definitely handle themselves…but also consider that THEY ARE VERY SMALL!! They are all just so small and dorky and cringe and excitable and losers and giddy and so, so, so full of joy!
The Leo’s are all having a fucking breakdown because: “Oh my god he’s such a loser! I love him so much! He’s trying SO hard to be a good big brother and leader! He just like me fr!”
The Raph’s are punching shit due to shear overwhelming over protectiveness and cute aggression, like: “He’s so fucking stupid! He’s so FUCKING STUPID!!! I WOULD FUCKING DIE FOR HIM!!"
The Donnie’s have been collectively scheming on how to: “Wrap him in bubble wrap and put him safely in a jar where he shall be safe and do nothing but eat pizza and watch anime for however long he wants! Dose he need a new phone or computer? Doesn’t matter! We’re already making one for him!”
The Mikey’s are the biggest MM!Mikey hype men ever, like seriously: “Yes babe, you tell that joke! Swing those chucks, mini Mikey! YOU’RE DOING AMAZING SWEETIE!!!”
Meanwhile, in the background, all the Splinter’s have been very calm and quiet, seemingly unfazed, at least on the outside. They absolutely FEEL for this new Splinter on a spiritual and emotional level. Every time one of the MM!Boys goes head first into danger they tense up so bad and are just internally screaming: “MY BABIES!! MY PRECIOUS BOYS!! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!”
Then they all just start sobbing because the MM boys were able to have a good ending! They have a large mismatch family of mutants, a cool April as their friend, they were accepted by society, they even got to go to school! Maybe there is a bit of underlying jealousy amongst them, seeing another version of yourself living the life you always wanted, but mostly they were just SO happy for them! They were so unbelievably happy that FOR ONCE some version of themselves got to live a normal life! That they got to be kids!
So yeah, basically the whole Turtleverse is that meme of: I’m crying, screaming, throwing up! I’ve only had these boys for five minutes but if anything happens to them, I will destroy this universe and then myself!
If the Mutant Mayhem boys eventually do mean the rest of the Turtleverse you can bet your ass that they will ABSOLUTLY be spoiled rotten by the others. And like the MM!Boys won’t even realize it, they’ll just think that the other Turtles are just being super nice to them because they’re new. They don’t know the absolute fucking chokehold they have on the entire multiverse!

Hi everyone-
I started an instagram with some poetry. If you fancy, please go check it out. Much love friends.
instagram
It’s a strange life I live and I feel it no more strongly than when I do common tasks- I love my Dyson like nothing else but I clean with homemade citric vinegar. I trust my great grandmother infinitely more than the mass media. I’m stuck between a desire to be drinking coffee in Paris while writing a novel and a house full of jars waiting to be filled with homemade pickles that taste like summers past. Aging is wearing on me- still younger than I’d like and more confused than I hoped to be. Houses are expensive you know. But I’m lucky I guess because I don’t owe a dime for college or my car, but my friends that owe $90,000? They are living rent free and drinking cosmos while I’m shopping the Aldi sale papers hoping that one day I’ll be able to pay a down payment. Sometimes it feels that doing right sets you seventeen steps behind. In my heart, I go back to the little girl I once was sitting in the little blue plastic chairs in the basement of my church hearing the age old adage that of course doing right is always better for you in the end but some days don’t feel like it. I’m not complaining- I like my debt and cosmo free life but I’d like a house someday. The paradox of life feels like an explosion in my stomach- wringing my hands and walking laps just trying to reconcile and trust all that I am, right now in this moment, all that I have been all these years, and all that I am being made to be. I wish someone could explain how I can be so old fashioned and yet so modern- but the other days? I’m so glad no one can define it, not even me. There’s a lot in my soul, but it settles just right- eventually.

''Welcome To Rosas'' - Wish
I recently have been talking with a friend about the songs in the upcoming movie Wish and how we're not impressed by them.
Judging by other people's reaction we're not alone. I want you to know I'm not a professional, so I might not have a good enough vocabulary to express what I mean but I'll do my best.
And to people who will go ''You can't judge it! You're not a professional critic, what do you know? This movie is for kids!'' I would like you to look at all the kids movies with far better soundtracks (like all of Disney from the 90s). Somebody has to bring the kids to the movies and I'm not going to sit through the whole movie if the writing is as terrible as the writing in the songs. I'm just going play my Hercules DVD for my nephews.
I would also like to say that I don't know how to fly a helicopter but I know that it shouldn't be in a tree upside down. (If you get this reference, good for you.)
Let's get to the songs shall we? Let's star with the welcoming song!
youtube
At first she sings about mundane things that you can do without magic like dancing on beat and having long hair and then she drops that you can wish to go to outer space! How?! Did Magnifico do that? Is the person back and alive? The whiplash is so jarring! I guess it's a connection between cosmos and stars and it was supposed to rhyme. There's more to song writing than making it sound nice and words rhyming!
There's also ''place full of surprise''. Shouldn't it be ''surprises''? Do they have only one surprise?
And the usage of the word ''collide''. ''Collide'' implies something sudden, dangerous and unpleasant. I guess it's another attempt at using ''space'' lingo. ''Combine'' would've been much more natural.
Her going ''so like'' is very annoying. Is she Shaggy or some valley girl? It completely stops the flow of the song and restarts right after. What's the point? Is it supposed to be funny?
The visuals accompanying the song are so boring. I already mentioned a few but there's more: walking on stilts, playing on the ceramics like they're drums, playing with birds, a toy pinwheel, more dancing and rose petals from the sky. None of it is magical and I guess that might be the point but it doesn't change the fact that it's not shown in an entertaining manner. Cinderella singing while washing the stairs and bubbles has more artistic value and creativity!
Also, Disney is getting lazy with the same character model just color swapped. It was noticeable in Frozen during the ballroom scene and now I saw the same characters multiple times in many parts of the movie.
The clunky exposition about King Magnifico and his magic. I have to jump ahead to the villain song in which he sings ''I granted 14 wishes last year!'' but in this song Asha sings how he grants one wish a month. Does a year in Rosas have 14 months?
The part of ''Welcome to Rosas'' that goes ''it is unlikely that you'll be unhappy'' annoys me to no end. This is supposed to charm people? Imagine if Genie sang ''You probably never had a friend like me.'' or if Ariel sang ''I think I would like to see your world''.
Is there anything that you disliked about the song but I didn't mentioned? Feel free to tell. And if your defense for the song is ''It sounds nice.'' this isn't what I'm talking about. We're criticizing the lyrics and how you can't enjoy the pretty music because the awkward writing makes my brain stop and ask ''What did you just say? That doesn't sound right.''.
Special thanks to toaverse for discussing Wish with me.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) Review
Tumblr media
The film debuts a new DreamWorks Animation logo: the child in the moon sails the moon around the cosmos and encounters characters from various DreamWorks films. However I noted some major absences like no characters from Madagascar or Croods or even any of their Aardman fare. Yet folks from The Bad Guys and the bloomin’ Boss Baby are front and centre. I’m all about looking towards the future, but DreamWorks needs to take a page from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and remember to appreciate and respect the past. Especially Madagascar - they’re silly but significant films of DreamWorks Animation legacy.
Plot: Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: he has burnt through eight of his nine lives. Puss sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.
Is it simply me or DreamWorks has been on fire recently? The Bad Guys wasn’t too bad but Croods 2... has anyone actually seen Croods 2? Me and the fiancée have recently watched it and gosh golly if it wasn’t one of the funniest animations I have seen in a long while. The energy, the joke rate and the colourful visages all made up for a great family adventure, and the movie also made me once again obsessed with the banger “I Think I Love You”. Croods 2 is great and if you haven’t seen it then do yourself a favour. Anyway, now we have a sequel to the 2011 Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots, which by the way the fact that that movie came out over a decade ago makes me really ponder and worry how quickly that time had past. Yet again I find myself leaning towards saying the useless observation - gosh golly. Regardless, the new sequel has now come out and you know what - it’s pretty good. In fact, it may even be better than the first one.
The first Puss in Boots always felt like a spin-off. I mean, it was literally a spin-off too, but it also felt like the younger more forgettable brother to the Shrek films. It was enjoyable and Antonio Banderas’ Zorro-inspired vocal performance of the titular character never gets old, however as a whole was a forgettable outing. However the decade long time to make the sequel seems to have paid off, as the writers and animators really spent the time to actually cook up a more unique and original title to the DreamWorks Animation collection. For one they take inspiration from the recent Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by blending 2D and 3D animation to create a very slick comic book feel that, in the case of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, really amplified the fairy-tale feel. As such the world is full of popping colours and the fight sequences are both exciting and bombastic, which is perfect for a family feature. I must say though that this fast paced animation style can at times be too jarring, as even my fiancée began getting a little headache from so much imagery being slapped into her lovely little face. But nevertheless it made for an exciting animation, and one that sticks out among the rest.
As for the narrative itself, as with most DreamWorks titles this film is filled with hilarity and stupidity, however it also handles surprisingly mature themes on mortality, childhood trauma, need for identity, companionship and the fear of trusting others. The mortality element especially is handled really well, as Puss is on his final of his nine lives, and he feels it. He’s afraid of death which causes him to have real panic attacks and truly question if he can still be the legend that he has been all the time. Granted his fear of death is very well founded, as in this film death itself is personified by the Big Bad Wolf, who truly is one of the most creepiest animated creations I’ve seen in a long while, from his slow motions to the red eyes to that whistle. My gosh that spine-chilling whistle. DreamWorks just casually bringing nightmares to every child around the world. So yes, Puss being afraid of Death/Big Bad Wolf is perfectly understandable, and again this is a great way to bring such a mature thematic to a younger audience.
What I’ve also been enjoying about recent DreamWorks movies is their focus on having a big ensemble of characters, however managing to make each and every one of them stand out. Croods 2 did it really well, and The Last Wish also succeeds. Naturally the return of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek as Puss and Kitty Softpaws is both wonderful and nostalgic seeing them two works together again, but it’s the new characters that really steal the show. Florence Pugh, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo and Olivia Colman play Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and they all feel like these gangster geezer types that have just walked in from a Guy Ritchie flick, and their family dynamic and Goldilocks’ inner conflict of not being able to fit in became one of the more powerful side-plots of the whole movie. Also Olivia Colman has the most perfect maternal voice ever. Like every mother in the world would gain points from having Colman’s vocals. Then there’s John Mulaney as Jack Horner and for the life of me I cannot recall what fairy-tale/children’s rhyme he’s from, however Mulaney as always is on fire with the jokes due to his stand-up comedy background, and also visually they made Jack Horner looks like, dare I say it, Boris Johnson. Only with purple hair. The resemblance in uncanny and I’m having serious suspicions that it must have been intentional. I’ve also already spoken about Wagner Moura’s Big Bad Wolf - holy frijoles that was one big bad wolfie! And finally there’s Harvey Guillen’s Perrito. At first when this little dog character appeared, I was worried he’d be that type of cartoon over-the-top inclusion that would get annoying very quickly. Instead however he ends up being that voice of goodness, purity and innocence, and one that helps our main characters make the right decisions and as such he was both useful and super adorable.
Look, I am as shocked as anyone at how good Puss in Boots: The Last Wish turned out to be. Easily better than its predecessor and in fact taking a run for the money at the better Shrek movies. By the way the film features quite a few delightful Easter Eggs from Shrek, and one especially will excite fans about the future of that franchise. As for Puss, this is a joyful animated romp with some poignant themes and fun characters, and distinguishes its titular cat as indeed a favourite fearless hero.
Overall score: 7/10

OH I HAVE MORE what happens to HRH's new Force-sensitivity after Tseng is born? Especially in the context of the Path of Desire finale because if it just disappears after they've tasted all that power ooooof I need to know the consequences of that choice
Their force sensitivity is a consequence of the work of midi-chlorians building in the tissues of a force-sensitive being inside of them. I don't know if you've ever seen accurate images of a pregnancy at 6/7 weeks of development, but it is truly a tiny sac of web-like cells at that point. So when we see them, their powers are fairly weak, mostly amplified by being on a vergence-point in the cosmos, which also explains why they didn't feel very differently before landing on Exegol. As Tseng grows, so will their abilities.
Naturally, once he is parted from them, HRH will lose their newfound power.
Now, this is a sensitive subject and I won't pretend to have a full understanding of it as someone who has never undergone having a child and almost certainly never will. However, I do have close friends who have given birth and experience post-partum depression.
My understanding is that pregnancy comes with a cultural feeling of specialness, you're excited and treated a certain way and feel very physically close with your baby. At a certain point you can feel their movements and there's a knowledge that they are with you always, you are nuturing them with your own body, you are physically aware of them being there at all times.
Then, after birth, not only is this physical connection suddenly not there, you have the reality of not sleeping, having the stress of a crying baby with needs that you can't always determine, you're often no longer treated as special by those around you and often socially isolated because you have to stay home to care for your newborn.
For HRH, not only are they experiencing the feelings of elation being pregnant, it comes with the special attention they've desired from their father, as he has an interest in how it is possible for a non-force sensitive person to become force-sensitive. It comes with the feelings of power they've desperately craved their entire life. AND, not only do they feel the normal physical closeness of having a baby developing inside of them, with their newfound awareness, they have the ability to sense them on a level they haven't been able to connect with others before.
I imagine the sudden severance of that connection and that awareness to the universe around them would be incredibly jarring for anyone losing force-sensitivity, but especially someone undergoing physical and hormonal changes as well. HRH has a deeply religious devotion to the Force and I think they could deal with some of it by believing they passed that gift their son, but it would be a difficult transition for sure.
I've also understood that often, within a few months of giving birth, sometimes the hormonal changes + the loss feelings associated with PPD can drive some people to actively seek becoming pregnant AGAIN in order to re-capture that connection. Perhaps HRH would attempt something really foolish, like trying to get back in touch with the Inquisitor without getting permission to do so first. I'm sure Renson would have a heart attack.
Let's hope their guards being there as a constant comfort helps them through their difficult time.

An attempt at a color script
I was kind of dreading this at first, but after gathering references it didn't feel so bad. It's interesting how different the results feel than what I had imagined. I'll have to think about if I want to change the lighting to make this a bit... lighter? Anyway, I tried to capture important moments in the short where the lighting and color might be unique. I should be able to use this as a map/guide to lighting my scenes. Onto modeling!

And of course, here are my reference images. I think they look pretty :]

Dear Void,
How are you this evening?
I'm sorry I didn't write yesterday. Something happened at work that left me physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally shaken. I'm okay. Physically, I am functioning. I am not wounded. Physically. But the insides of me, the things that are intangible, are cracked and broken and left scattered. I'm still putting myself back together, and even more pieces are missing than before.
In the past, I've asked a hypothetical question and meditated on it with just my hands, but every time I've tried tonight, the words don't feel right. Hollow. Forced. Like I'm suddenly aware of a square that I'm trying desperately to fit into, even though I have too many curves and the box is fragile. I wanted to ask about anger and human nature, perhaps even try to define good and evil. But in the end, I just feel tired.
I'm tired, void. And I don't think there's enough time left in my life to sleep so much that I don't feel tired anymore. I want to make things, but I'm too tired to create. I fold stars when I'm anxious, and now that I have almost two jars full, I want to make something with them. But society has conditioned me that anything made must be sold, and only quality things are bought. My stars aren't very good, not very consistent, and I'm tired. Too tired to try. Too tired to fight back the second guessing and doubt. Too tired to even want to create.
Too tired to dream.
Do you dream, void? What do the stars see when they close their eyes? What do galaxies imagine when they let their minds wander?
What dreams does the cosmos have?
My cat says it's bedtime, and who am I to argue?
Good night, void.
Sweet dreams.
As above, so below Ryn

Persuasion 2022 makes me want to visit Jane Austen’s grave and apologise
So here’s a compilation of hilariously scathing reviews. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
-Clarisse Loughrey
How exactly does the line, “it is said if you’re a five in London, you’re a 10 in Bath”, improve on Austen’s work or make it any more palatable to modern audiences? Or what about the comments on being “an empath” and focusing on “self-care”?
When Anne is reunited with Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), the man she once rejected, Austen writes: “Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangement.” In the film? We get: “We are strangers. Worse than strangers. We’re exes.”
There’s nothing here that seems to drive her [Crackell’s] work (...) beyond the directive of capitalising on current trends. This is exactly what happens when art becomes a brand exercise.
There’s not even an attempt to be accurate here – Marianne Agertoft‘s costumes only look like Regency dress if you’d somehow been led to believe that the pages of this month’s Tatlermagazine had been shot out of a time machine. And, as much as I am loath to defend Bridgerton, the Netflix production Persuasion clearly modelled itself after, its anachronisms at least feel carefully chosen in order to give the series a poppy irreverence.
You can’t help but think what Austen would make of all this. She was nearly 40 when she wrote Persuasion, inches away from her deathbed. Anne’s pain in the novel is sharp, laced with the fear that she’s reached a point in life where she’s outrun every last opportunity, most especially for love. How do you absorb all of that feeling, only to give us an Anne who sighs performatively after she knocks a vessel of gravy on her head and boasts about dancing to Beethoven alone in her room “with a bottle of red”? How would the latter even happen in an era before record players?

Austen should be allowed a chance at the Instagram generation. But the frozen expression on romantic lead Cosmo Jarvis’s face throughout speaks louder than any review. (He can relax: one of the few things that can be said about this film with certainty is that it will be forgotten quickly.)

- Patrick Cremona
It all seems so forced and deliberate, more annoying and jarring than it is charming or inventive.
Then there are the frequent fourth-wall-breaking monologues, which start early on and continue to arrive at all too regular intervals throughout the runtime – with Alice providing a near-constant running commentary on the action, one that's neither witty nor insightful enough to be worth its while. It all allows a certain archness to take hold, a smugness that gets in the way of any emotional sincerity.
For the most part, it just feels rather drab and half-hearted, breezing along easily enough without ever injecting any real pizzazz into proceedings.
All this ensures the film commits one of cinema's cardinal sins – frankly, it's a little bit boring.

                                - x - x - x -                          - x - x - x -
In other words, the film’s Anne, unlike Austen’s quivering and stifled introvert, is that rom-com mainstay, the manic pixie dream girl, an ostensibly smart and capable woman whose klutziness and all-round-adorability ensures she’s completely non-threatening.
Sad but true, she (Dakota Johnson) is upstaged by the wallpaper on several occasions.
The famous ’letter scene’ is shrug-worthy. The final kiss moved me not.
                               - x - x - x -                          - x - x - x -
It’s set in the early 19th century, not remotely of Austen, but of Bridgerton, the success of which has unfortunately convinced Netflix that anything goes. Imagine flaunting an antique copy of the novel in a full-cosplay selfie, but holding it upside down.
Meanwhile, the dialogue perpetrates five war crimes per minute.
The way Michell finessed the most autumnal of Austen’s works, with Amanda Root cast to perfection, set a gold standard. This takes a flailing leap, but it’s neither audacious enough to commit to a singular vision, nor shrewd enough to get the novel right. It nosedives between two stools and never gets up.
                               - x - x - x -                          - x - x - x -
It is like an Austen amuse bouche — an entry-level cover version that tries to rev up the humor and speak directly to Gen Z by using its lingo — or at least an advertising executive's idea of what Gen Z sounds like.
-Lindsey Bahr
Instead, viewers get brief snippets of Anne’s internal character conflict and her yearning for Wentworth. By extension, Wentworth is always shafted and his character falls short due to the comedic tone of the film. Anne and Wentworth have clumsy and awkward exchanges that feature the sort of delivery you’d expect from an episode of The Office as opposed to a romance about healing the wounds of two heartbroken people.
Characters are constantly espousing modern beliefs. “A woman without a husband is not a problem to be solved,” says one sagely, greeted with a wry smile by Anne. Except that in 1817, unmarried women faced ridicule, lack of social agency and destitution, something Anne and Austen knew all too well. By removing Austen’s thematic concerns – class, spinsterhood, the questionable power of persuasion – there are simply no real barriers to Anne and Wentworth’s reunion. Indeed, it’s hard to see how this spirited person could be persuaded to do anything. With such low stakes, the film crawls along without momentum.
I’m all for modernising the classics (see 2020’s Emma for Austen with an injection of over-the-top fun) but this one can’t decide if it’s trying to amuse or edify and consequently does neither. Bring back Bridgerton, please.
- Francesca Steele
Sadly Persuasion, not only the worst Austen adaptation but one of the worst movies in recent memory, delivers on all the agony and none of the hope.
The filmmakers have served up a soggy mess of limp rom-com clichés that does a disservice not only to Austen but to all her contemporary inheritors, from Cher Horowitz to Bridget Jones. As played by Dakota Johnson, the novel’s heroine Anne Elliot, a lovelorn, bookish, self-effacing woman on the cusp of spinsterhood, becomes an insufferably coy scatterbrain who speaks in 21st-century buzzwords
There is updating classic literature to bring it in tune with modern sensibilities, and then there is insulting the viewer’s intelligence. Persuasion’s endlessly attempts to pander to young audiences presumed incapable of understanding any message not conveyed via Instagram hashtag
Unfortunately, as played by Cosmo Jarvis, Wentworth is also something of a lifeless sad sack. His pining for Anne is believable enough, but his character is so thinly written that it’s hard to see whatever qualities induced her to spend eight years pining for him.
In this movie, eligible men are mostly nattily attired scarecrows on which to hang romantic longing.
The fine shadings of social class that drive the novel’s conflict are mostly lost in this translation to the screen. The presence of Black, Asian, and mixed-race actors in the cast at first feels refreshing, but any intended social commentary is lost in the script’s thematic muddle.
it’s hard to overstate what unpleasant company Johnson’s Anne Elliot is. She performatively chugs red wine straight from the bottle, goes everywhere cuddling a never-explained pet rabbit, and interrupts one stodgy teatime with an extended and charmless non sequitur about a recurring dream that an octopus is sucking her face.
she (Austen) describes Anne and Wentworth’s long-ago affair as “a short period of exquisite felicity.” The only such moment afforded by Persuasion is when the closing credits finally start to roll.

Another Life
Another life is this: A come-away-with-me Somewhere warm and safe There are no more horrible cold and early mornings Long drives through lifeless concrete Grinding away in a box Dirty white and endless noise for nothing but sand
Packed in a single room Crammed and rotting No room to grow No space to welcome Everything’s stuffed in a box There’s no room
But this will be another life: Long fields of rose pink cosmos Periwinkle bachelor-buttons Sun kissed dandelions Bee covered clovers
Trees that beckon to wander and be lost Green and living gold, bleeding red Moss coated, toadstool blessed Fairy falls from mountain halls where pixies drink
And there is a house here too Big enough to grow Cottage-like and clean, wrap around porch Covered in white roses and vines Everything is clean But lived in, alive, cozy A welcome home
There is an attic room full of books Painted sunset-pink Hung with my favorite pictures Here is my sewing machine My clay, my beads, my weaving Everything in its place
The kitchen holds my favorite mugs From everywhere I have I have visited Teapots and mushroom jars Fresh cut flowers with homemade Hand-pies and stew
The greenhouse is set for tea and visiting Full of color, tomatoes and cucumbers for summer salad Blueberries and strawberries to eat with cream And the air is fresh and untouched A fire burns in a happy hearth
And then of course, in this other life, there is you You are strong and honorable You are funny and kind You are safe to me but dangerous to evil You let me love you with my heart open and bleeding
The walls are hung with Icons Crucifixes and candles Rosaries and Holy Rites Holy water and murmured prays Our home is a little church
This is another life I would like to live This is my escape This is almost a litany That maybe life can change

Embodiment and Power: Asia Dorsey's Winter Herbal Immersion
In 2022 I was researching mermaids off and on while writing two fictional short stories about mermaids; Wild Sun Catchers and Naomi. Fast forward to the Spring of 2023, I unexpectedly had the idea pop in my head to organize a merfolk happening that would coincide with the release of "The Little Mermaid" starring Halle Bailey and other amazing actors. Luckily people were interested in participating and everyone's contributions were amazing!
The Little Mermaid premiered in mid-May and I wish I could have seen it at the movie theater on Court Street in Brooklyn, but I saw it at a local theater in Gilbert, Arizona. A desert mermaid going to see and support some of her kinfolk on the big screen. It's amazing how this one film generated even more conversations, projects and visual representations of Black mermaids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shout out to the merfolk imagery that existed before the "Little Mermaid" release, like Bianca Barclay (who also happened to grow up on Staten Island) bringing mermaids to life in Netflix' "Wednesday".
Note* These images do not represent the various environments mermaids can be found in. I'm still waiting to find images and video of swamp, marshland and mangrove merfolk! #WetlandsAreLife
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo Description: From Top to Bottom - a house with a short dock in a Louisiana swamp, marshlands in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and an image of Mangroves.
A strong presence of mermaids has been in my life for two years now. I feel that not only is this happening in my life and expanding and deepening my identity, but on a collective level, mermaids have come into the collective consciousness (in 2023 specifically) in such a big way, it makes me think, knowing how the ocean and the cosmos reflect and are in conversation with each other, there is something going on in the stars related to mer-creatures.
It's mid-August now and I just finished watching a new Netflix TV series that, what do you know, has a mermaid character and symbolism in it. Right then and there it hit me while watching this tv show that the mermaid spirit(s) is with me for the rest of my life.
I'm grateful that I could participate in Asia Dorsey Winter Herbal Immersion, which was chock full of information on living a lifestyle of nourishment, with a special emphasis on supporting the kidneys. Later on, she would participate in Water School's Open Residency offering a workshop called "Interview with the Mermaid". The experience was like how we might imagine encountering a mermaid; she was there for a clear moment, and then she was gone. All I can say is, if Asia ever does this again, I would join in a heartbeat.
Tumblr media
During the immersion we got to choose from a short list of herbs one we wanted to work with during our time together (and beyond). I wanted to work with Oat straw, but what was available to me at that time was Nettles (also on the list), because it just so happened that my AirBnB host (thank you river!) gifted me a large mason jar of Nettles. It would be a few months later when I finally started gaining a grasp on establishing a consistent herbal routine, coming into my power day by day.
The spirit of the water element in the kidneys
Tumblr media
I learned a lot, and I really recommend you take the winter immersion the next time Asia does it. The first thing I noticed about the course is how it brought our attention to the kidneys, and this organ's connection to water, winter, the ocean and mermaids. We learned about the kidneys through various lenses, particularly Traditional Chinese Medicine, so when I continued researching the kidneys through this healing tradition, I learned that the kidneys are: where our life force and genetic inheritance are stored, play a role in memory ( I don't have a great memory so I think my Kidney Essence needs support), are the home to Zhi, the spirit of the Water element. This excerpt from the article really got me:
"Zhi, the spirit of the Water element, is housed in the kidneys. It is known as one’s Will power, ambition, purpose, and destiny. Zhi is a force that allows a person to move along their destined path without much conscious thought or effort. And, it’s thought to be the innate power of life itself – life that wants to live, strives to stay alive and survive".
Endless gratitude to Traditional Chinese Medicine practioners, your ancestors and the legacy of your healing traditions which help other cultures learn more about the body.
Tumblr media
I'm African-American with Ghanaian heritage, how can I learn about the kidneys within my own cultural context? I'm not 100% sure, but I think throughout the course Asia was connecting Mami Wata to the kidneys, and I'm thinking now, how even if there isn't a lot of cultural literature or media about African-American healing practices specifically about the kidneys (peep the emergence and rise in visibility of Black water workers), we can CREATE our own cultural connections between the kidneys, water and whatever else, we can CREATE culture. Does this make sense? I think this is what Asia is doing.
Sometimes people in the U.S. and around the world think that African-Americans (with layered identities) have no culture or are culturally disconnected and poor, when the reality is that we have rich cultures (plural, because Black culture in the US is similar across the board but different based on what part of the country you are in), and like other cultures, we create from our deep individual and collective wellsprings.
Black folks and kidneys . . . let's talk about it.
Nourishing foods for the kidneys, aka nourishing foods for merfolk during the winter season

I'm still processing what we learned during the course, but one section that really stuck out to me was the foods and tonics we can eat that support our kidneys, some of which come from the ocean. I was excited to learn that I was already, unknowingly, eating kidney foods like dried seaweed snacks, berries, yogurt (although I eat a cashew alternative) kale, salmon, (salt and chocolate covered roasted) almonds, sardines and now nettles. Now I want to eat nourishing kidney foods more intentionally, and start incorporating foods I don't ingest a lot, like bone broth, oysters and black beans.
Out of all the places in my body I'm interested in exploring and being called to pay attention to, I don't think I would have ever looked more deeply into the kidneys until taking this immersion. The kidneys have been trying to get my attention for some time now; I just didn't know the signs were connected to my kidneys. It feels overwhelming sometimes how much attention and awareness the body needs. I took this course when I visited Albuquerque, New Mexico. My AirBnB host invited me to a group gathering where we walked to the Rio Grande. I spoke to the organizer along the way who told me her life's work is to be embodied, and that has stayed with me.
