Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
I would like to think that Genji and Kiriko utilize JSL (Japanese Sign Language) whenever they're telling secrets to each other or just being giddy about anything.
The reason I'm thinking this, is because Kiriko and Genji spent a lot of time together when the were younger, right? So I'd assume during some of their free time was spent learning sign.
Genji of course, with him and his playboy dumbassery wasn't as interested compared to Kiriko.
But after nearly FOCKIN' DYIN', some of his vocal chords were replaced by some sort of synthesizer or robot parts or whatever.
So since he maybe didn't like his voice and/or there were times that he couldn't speak because Angela was probably doing maintenance on his synthesizer, he became a bit more interested in sign. (This was probably during his Blackwatch era.)
So now he knows a bit of sign, and can mostly do finger spelling (not sure about finger spelling, I'm WAY more educated in American Sign Language).
Imagine he just catches up with Kiriko and then surprises her with his decent knowledge of sign.
So imagine Genji and Kiriko signing RIGHT IN FRONT of Hanzo, and him just completely not understanding a THING and him getting pissed off.
Or, imagine Hanzo actually being totally fluent in JSL and absolutely wiping the floor off of Genji's basic finger spelling, and Kiriko just absolutely laughing her ass off.
TLDR: I headcannon Genji knowing some basic Japanese Sign Language and it's fun thinking about the funny situations that come up with it.
Does anyone who speaks Japanese know what's being said during 1:02-1:15, 1:51-2:12, and 3:06-3:59? I specifically want the kanji or romaji, because I would love to include this in a compilation of sign language being incorporated into musicals, but I would need to caption it, and I don't know Japanese. Any help would be much appreciated!
This is the JSL sign for (to) LOVE, AFFECTION, CUTE, (to) DOTE-ON.
This is meant to signify patting/rubbing someone on the head. If the person you are using the sign towards is a woman or girl, the non-dominant hand may use an extended pinkie instead. Likewise, an extended thumb may be used for a man or boy.
Good luck and 頑張れ to everyone taking the JLPT today! And if you’ve already taken it, you did great, regardless of your score. This is a huge, difficult test and you’ve taken on the burden of preparing for it. That’s a win in and of itself! Take some time for yourself to relax and do something to reward yourself
