Listen. I know she's dead by the start of season two (I'm assuming, I haven't seen past episode one), I know she's only a minor secondary character, I know she's just a love interest (to another minor character I might add) who doesn't have a huge amount of depth.

But Agnes from season 1 of Umbrella Academy means so fucking much to me.

Here's the thing. Agnes isn't young. She's maybe somewhere between sixty and seventy (I'm guessing, I'm ngl I'm not great at telling people's ages from looking at them lol).

You might call her old. Except the show really challenges that. Is Agnes old? She's so bright and full of life, she's one of the most upbeat and positive characters in the season. She's not unhappy, but she's not satisfied in life. Her story plays out like a romance novel where the 20 yr old Mary Sue protagonist runs away with her boyfriend to live a life on the run and finally finds herself.

She has such a youthful story and character. And it makes you think. Is Agnes old? Again, yes, she's dead by season 2, but hypothetically she has a good bit of time left. She got another 20 years. And she was (presumably) very happy.

Agnes' life didn't end after she turned thirty. Or fourty. Or even fifty. Agnes has the best and most chaotic time of her life at ~60 yrs old.

And the show never brings up the fact that she's an older woman. It's never an issue of contention, she doesn't struggle with it, she's not depressed that she's still making doughnuts and being a waitress at her age.

She's quietly positive that life still has a lot to show her. She's still happy, and fighting to have the life she wants. Agnes is still living.

And fuck I appreciate it so much. She's my favourite Umbrella Academy character. She's an absolute breath of fresh air, and the fact that she's a minor character somehow makes it all the better.

Because Agnes would have been so easy to write as a sad old woman who never had the life she wanted and who is depressed about her age, who was crazy in her youth and then lost her spark, and regains it only for a second before fading from the narrative and dying.

But Agnes isn't any of that. She's her own person, she follows Hazel because she wants to and because she's secure enough in herself to know exactly what she wants, not because she's insecure and desperate. She's so well written and she's not even relevant.

God I love her so much

tua3 was so tough. within the year it after it came out -- june 22 2022 - june 22 2023 -- just 2,679 works under the fandom tag were updated on AO3. that may seem like a decent chunk, but compare this to the relatively even distribution between july 31 2020 - july 21 2021 (the year after season 2 came out), where 5,326 were updated, and february 15, 2019 - february 15, 2020 (the year after season one), where there were 5,637. tua used to have one of the most vibrant, collaborative, active fandoms i've ever had the pleasure to be in, and the sheer mediocrity of season 3 seemed to just take a wrecking ball to that community pretty much overnight. literally cut its fanfiction output in half. still makes me sad.

#and this is works updated. like people are abandoning their fics. ive never seen a fandom implode so badly.#i still keep up with a couple of fics but i don't engage with tua much anymore and it just makes me sad.#it consumed about 70% of my life during lockdown and now i barely care about it :(#the umbrella academy

i had a dream about Klaus and Five fighting then five brought up Klaus being a junkie and thennnnn

Klaus brought up how Five is the reason every bad thing has happened to him. five LITERALLY did it to himself.

nobody pushed him out the door to go attempt to jump into the future infact everyone tried to stop him because they called after him.

five literally made his life the way it is because he's a stubborn bitch who thought he knew better

i woke up @ 4am after this dream and haven't slept since

also he called Klaus a junkie who has no idea what it's like being alone but Klaus literally was on the streets for like 12 years so he probably understands better than anyone

cause five and Klaus both probably had no food and had to eat out of dumpsters and do things they absolutely didn't want to do in order to survive

dream verse has it out for me honestly

gee i wonder who that guy could be!

a little comic of @wifeguy-luther's fic theory of quantum superposition, from the end scene of the first chapter. i love some alternate universe meets canon shenanigans, and this fic is ALL alternate universe meets canon shenanigans.

[ID: an 8-panel comic set during a fic of The Umbrella Academy. The Hargreeves minus Five have found themselves in an alternate timeline and have asked Murphy (or rather, Murphy's boss) to help them fix their broken briefcase. The Hargreeves are mostly wearing amalgams of their outfits in seasons 2 and 3. Murphy is a blond woman wearing a black blazer and a pink button up.

Panel 1: Murphy is seated at a table with a pizza on it. She is holding a cup of soda and gesturing with both hands. She says "The professor wouldn't have been able to help you anyway. Her work is theoretical."

Panel 2: Sipping now from the cup of soda, Murphy continues, "She can't fix your time machine. She doesn't have an engineering background."

Panel 3: All five of the present Hargreeves. They look varying levels of shocked, worried, and outraged, except Klaus, who is reaching for a slice of pizza. In unison, they all (except Klaus) think "shit."

Panel 4: Murphy continues, "but I do." She adds, "My friend and I actually know a lot about this stuff."

Panel 6: "Instant temporal-spacial travel?" asks another voice. The Hargreeves all look offscreen, surprised, except Klaus, who is eating pizza.
