As much as I do love boobs, they are entirely a social construct. I really think we need a strong revival in the free the nipple movement because the concept of topless nudity existing for some people but not others is frankly insane. The breasts of fat men, men who have gynecomastia, are allowed to be seen, despite being more or less the same anatomy as afab people with breasts. In order for an afab trans person to be topless, they must get a surgery to remove breast tissue BUT if a cis woman gets the same surgery (double masectomy) for health or personal reasons while still identifying as a woman they can NOT be topless! The enforcement of topless nudity laws is unclear, based largely on opinion and used selectively to hurt minority groups (see: the trans woman who was denied a legal gender marker change and decided to go topless as a result, then was arrested for being topless despite the fact that in the eyes of the law she was a man)

I read daily about robustness tumblr culture and how it's impossible to monetize etc. blah blah blah
but no one ever talks about the life's blood of tumblr: GIFSETS.
Tumblr has longevity because it is the gifset website. A movie trailer drops and within an hour there are already multiple gifsets. Just there reminding us this movie is coming out it looks pretty good. A tumblr user thinks: I wish I had memory box containing every facial expression and movement made by Colin Firth in that 5 hour mini series of Pride and prejudice and some other tumblr user devotes their life to making that happen. Some dead guy has a birthday and a tumblr user gifs every single one of his dozens of films and puts them in a single gifset just because it makes fans of the dead guy happy.
Gifsets are amazing because gifsets are silent and they ask nothing but that you look at their pretty dancing images and smile fondly and click the like and reblog. A gifset didn't elect trump. A gifset didn't gaslight your grandma into believing that covid is an alien plot. A gifset just went floating by with no other thought than to look pretty and be appreciated.

i feel like i'm losing my mind why has the AI debate pivoted away from material/labor concerns back to debates about Real vs Fake Art. cannot express just how little i care about relitigating Art and high art and low art and skilled vs unskilled art. what i care about is the treatment and compensation of workers, the power corporations are exerting over intellectual property and creators, the continued extraction of resources, and the omnipresent glut of spam and disinformation with few or no regulations/resources that filter out the SEO AI generated nonsense

I feel the need to periodically remind people that Idiocracy is a eugenics movie.
One of the things that eugenicists believe is that it is bad for society when the “wrong people” breed.
The entire premise of the movie is that “stupid people” kept having kids while “smart people” didn’t have kids, and it ruined society because stupid genes propagated while smart genes died out. This is eugenics propaganda.
I know people will read this and their response will be “actually it’s satire” but the movie isn’t satirizing eugenics. It’s satirizing anti-intellectualism, and consumerism, and it proposes eugenics as a solution.
When eugenics was first conceived, it was used as a way to justify inequality. The idea was that people who held privilege were able to do so because they were smarter and genetically superior to lazy and stupid people who don’t have privilege. Obviously this is bad and wrong, but it is also the core lesson of Idiocracy.
The movie literally ends with the main character becoming president and having “the smartest children in the world.” Because he and his wife have smarter genes than everyone else. The proposed solution for the things that Idiocracy is satirizing is for the smart people to have children that can be in charge of the world.
I know it’s fun to use this movie to dunk on anti-intellectualism and the MAGA movement, but we need to stop. When you quote and reference this movie you are spreading eugenics propaganda.

Holy shit, they got Voyager 1 working again!
15 billion miles away and NASA was able to tweak code packages on one of the onboard computers and it worked and Voyager 1 is sending signals back to earth for the first time since November.
Incredible!

So obviously, the most obnoxious and useless sort of science fiction criticism is provided by angry dumb guys screaming into microphones about things being “woke”; but I also get annoyed by the people who insist on applying a sort of “roman-á-clé” reading, where everything in the story is merely a disguised stand-in for some real-world human political issue. Like, yes, obviously, sf is used for social and political commentary a lot of the time; but it’s *also* used to just kind of play around on the frontiers of possibility. And it frankly seems kind of demeaning to the genre to pretend that its alien, its bizarre, and its inhuman features are necessarily just stand-ins for some mundane, real-world concept. Like, yes, clearly The War of the Worlds is about colonialism; but it’s also about alien life; it’s also about evolution and ecology; and it’s also about “Wouldn’t it be fucked up if THIS happened!?” And all of these are irreducible from the genre. Is your robot autistic? Well, maybe you can read it that way. Maybe it’s a sincere attempt to imagine a nonhuman mechanical intelligence. Maybe it’s both. Sometimes, you write a story strictly for “Wouldn’t it be fucked-up if…” purposes and it ends up shedding a whole new light on the human condition; in fact, I think that, if you’re taking your concept seriously, it should do this by default. But you have to take the bizarre on its own terms or you might as well be reading realism.

heres my advice to any followers i have who are young. Don't delete things when you think you've outgrown them or they're cringy. If you make youtube videos just private them don't delete them. Save your files, you can bury them in multiple sub-folders if you think they're cringe now but DON'T DELETE THEM! It doesn't feel like it now but years in the future you will look back fondly at who you were and wish you still had those things.

The agonising feel when a character tag is full of shipping that you Simply Do Not Vibe With. The solution is, naturally, to keep scrolling. But the wince, the WINCE.
