note: so... another WIP gets added to the list days after i posted a snippet of mystified ch2... thing was... i was supposed to write that fic but my american lit professor sent a neruda poem we can work on for finals and i just snapped and re-read it again like 4 hours ago and here is the product of my neruda obsession (i'm blaming spike and spuffy authors for this)

inspired by pablo neruda's tonight i can write

He lifted her closer in his embrace and whispered lines of poetry in her ear. The words depicted her fortitude and compassion. His prose sang praises of her victories, big and small.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her too. How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Until he had gone out of words. Until he felt the last embers of her warmth seep away. Elijah could no longer find the words. He simply held her and instead hummed a lost song to occupy the silence. It was an ancient song to lull the children into sleep. Henrik had requested it of him the night before he was found dead, torn up by wolves. Elijah barely remembered the words now, having not spoken the ancient language in many years. He hoped Henrik would find it in himself to sing it to her.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines. To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her. To hear the immense night, still more immense without her. And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

unpopular opinion rn: i think it's insane that tyler actually goes through with willingly breaking every bone in his body constantly just to free himself of being controlled by klaus. most people don't even have the willpower to stop smoking cigarettes or drinking soda? but this man is like 😭 breaking his bones for sport just for a slim SHOT at getting free of klaus so that caroline will love him again. and okay, fair, she didn't ask for that, but her dad is the one helping him with it and she's kind of going along with it at the same time? even just on a friend level, if you erase the relationship part, i think the least caroline couldve done after tyler did all this is not fuck klaus. especially after klaus also killed his mom

but idk, maybe my thoughts will change by the time i'm there. but rn i'm just looking at this and baffled at how we got from point A to point B? it's been awhile since i've watched all this

EXICTING NEWS!!!

I'm meeting Jared Padelecki and Ian Somerholder at Comic Con Scotland this October! I never thought I would get this opportunity but here I am! My dad booked the tickets for Sunday so I'm getting a photo with the both of them. I'm especially excited for Jared, as I am a huge fan of Supernatural. October is going to be a stacked month for me as I am going to Liverpool to meet Jensen Ackles so that means I'll be getting to meet the Winchester brothers two weeks apart from each other.

there's so much manga i have to read it's unreal 😭

#for physicals i have 13 volumes of yona of the dawn. all of the rose of versailles. the first volume of the illustrated guide to monster #girls. and i need to reread tbhk or at least the first volume bc i told one of my kids at work that i'd let him read it while he's at the #program and i need to brush up on it bc it's been over a year.#and then for manga i don't have physicals of. i desperately need to reread and then catch up on kuro. considering everything the fact that #don't own the full series is a miracle probably prompted by how much my parents hated it up until the last few months when they suddenly #chilled tf out. i should get caught up on yuri is my job and finish killer in love. also i've sat down to read cocoon intertwined like 24 #times and gotten distracted and didn't every single one. i've been meaning to reread ohshc and pick up kamisama kiss. fruits basket.#vampire knight. nana. the apothecary diaries and chainsaw man. and i should give goodnight punpun a proper read too #then there's all of clamp's works in release order bc i have two volumes of tsubasa but haven't touched them bc i need to go in #release order or i'll die. and now that i think about it i'm really behind on oshi no ko #+ i have a full google doc of manga i need to get too and this is just what i can think of off the top of my head so god knows #what else is in there #romeo.txt

I must say, it's pretty poetic that I've gotten to season 6 of Vampire Diaries right before another solar eclipse happens in America. I certainly didn't plan it, but it does feel like my timing is very appropriate with this one. I do have questions about the accuracy of the eclipse portrayal in the show, though. I mean, a solar eclipse did in fact happen on May 10, 1994, and it was visible across much of the country, so that much is accurate. But I don't think Mystic Falls would've had quite as good of a view as they show it having. For reference, here's a map of the May 1994 eclipse path (credit: timeanddate.com):

And, if you'll remember, Mystic Falls is like two hours from my old hometown just a stone's throw north of Lynchburg, Virginia, as seen on the locator spell map (this one's all over tumblr, forgive me for not remembering what blog I grabbed it from):

So if you zoom in on the timeanddate map and pick somewhere closeish to there:

It looks like Mystic Falls would be getting a little over 77% coverage or so. It's also worth noting that the '94 eclipse was an annular eclipse, not a total eclipse like tomorrow's eclipse. That still means that the moon went directly in front of the sun, but it does mean that it was small enough/far enough from earth that you didn't quite get full coverage of the sun (thanks to weather.gov for the nifty graphic):

So, I'm not positive whether it would've looked quite as dark as was shown in the show:

Although, I must admit, in this video I found on youtube of the '94 eclipse, (part of me is shocked to find footage from then but I know I shouldn't be like yes they had cameras in the 90s) it actually looks more similar than I expected it to look, but I imagine it was most likely filmed within the path of totality:

But also, when Kai takes Bonnie to Portland, don't they see the eclipse again there? I couldn't find that clip on youtube just now, but Portland barely had any eclipse--only 42-43% coverage, so it would've been way milder of a visual effect, barely any dimming in the sky noticeable without eclipse glasses.

The funny thing is, the area where I live is going to be sitting right around 80% coverage tomorrow. I was lucky enough to get to travel to Missouri for the 2017 eclipse to get into the path of totality, but I'm afraid that it hasn't worked out for me to do so this year, which is immensely disappointing to me as an astronomy enjoyer, but I do still plan to go to an eclipse party and I'm going to start saving to try and get to Spain for the next total eclipse in 2026, which is going to be right around my 30th birthday (screaming). Anyways, it isn't great, but here's my best picture from the '17 eclipse:

I didn't even have a smartphone yet then, because despite it being 2017, I was somewhat of a luddite, so I had the purple flip phone I so stubbornly clung to and a point-and-click Nikon, but I still think this picture is pretty cool for what it is. Here's the zoom in so you can really see that ring of fire (and my shaking hands doubling the image):

Obviously you can find thousands of better eclipse pictures online, but that one's still special to me because it's mine. Anyways, I'll report back with smart phone pictures from whatever I see of the 80% total eclipse tomorrow to compare and contrast with Mystic Falls's 70% annular eclipse of the 90s, because from what I've heard it's going to be much less impressive than full totality was, but I've yet to watch a partial solar eclipse, so I'll just have to find out. Also, if you happen to have any vampiric loved ones trapped in a magical prison dimension who you need help freeing during the eclipse tomorrow, let me know and I'll see what I can do! ;) Hahaha. Anyways, happy eclipse everyone, and may we all possess sufficient self restraint to avoid eye damage (says the woman who has looked at the sun unprotected so many times and is probably going to go blind because of it some day. I know what I've done lol. Don't be me.)

The Vampire Diaries: Stelena | Stefan Salvatore x Elena Gilbert (Marriage/Pregnancy AU)

It is extremely cold. Elena's felt cold before, but it still sends a jolt through her when the doctor squeezes the gel out onto her bare stomach. She takes a deep breath - partially to counteract it and partially to steady her racing heart. It's running cross-country right now.

Stefan takes her hand and locks their fingers. With just the gesture and the smile in his eyes, he manages to settle the storm inside of her. He's right there with her.

They both look at the monitor when the doctor begins to speak.

"There it is," she says with a smile. "Your baby looks completely healthy. If you look right there, you'll see its heart which is beating beautifully."

She can see it. The pulsing pixels are so strong that she thinks she can feel it in her stomach. It's impossible, she knows as a doctor herself, but that doesn't stop her from imagining it.

"Do we want to know the sex?" the doctor asks, glancing over at them.

They look at each other. They hadn't really talked about it, but Elena knows the answer. She nods and turns back to the doctor, swallowing down her nerves.

"Yeah, we do."

"Okay." The doctor turns the monitor to better let them see the scan as she says, "Then this is your little girl. Do we have any names in mind yet?"

Elena barely hears the question. She stares at the monitor. Her baby. Her daughter. The pixels clump together and blur as tears overwhelm her. But she smiles - laughs, actually. One of pure joy.

Stefan breathes deeply, pressing his smile against her knuckles. He has enough coherency to say to the doctor, "Uh, a few. Some family names. We had some picked out for a boy and a girl."

"Oh yeah, were any top of the list for a girl?"

Elena sniffles and nods shakily, blinking her vision clear again. Mostly. When she thinks about voicing the answer, her eyes well up again and she nearly breaks open like a dam.

It's okay. Stefan swoops in, squeezing her hand lightly to let her know he's got it. She can take as much time as she needs right now.

"Jenna," he says softly, flicking his eyes back to the monitor, clearing his throat. "Jenna was top of the list. We were trying to choose between Miranda and Sarah for a middle name."

Just hearing it sets Elena's emotions off again. A feeling washes over her, picturing her mom and Jenna. They would be with her right now. They should be here. Crying with her, not just tributes.

But as she looks at her baby, a smile spreads across her face and she presses her fingers to her lips. They're here. She just can't see them, but they're here.

"Jenna Salvatore," Elena whispers. Another light laugh of pure joy bubbles out of her and she turns to look properly at Stefan. "She's really real. We're having a little girl."

"We are," Stefan says happily, grinning back as he cradles her face with his other hand. He pushes up to kiss her but neither of them can contain their emotions long enough. He presses their foreheads together and whispers, as if to himself, "She's real."

So one of my bffs has been banging on about The Vampire Diaries for months and I've been like "uggghhh no not for me thanks, I had enough years of Twilight I'm done with beige sulky 200 year old teenage boys fighting over a beige sulky teenage girl, besides that Somerhalder dude creeps me out" the whole time, but she's been banging on and banging on and I won't lie I've been like "tbh I just wish I knew wtf she was actually banging on ABOUT...."
