Every once in a while when a new piece of media stands out in such a way that introduces a lot of people to a genre that they were otherwise unfamiliar with it leads to a certain amount of subpar media analyses that essentially amount to "what's so great about this story is that normally you would expect it to suck(based on my uncharitable assumption of what the genre must be like instead of any actual examples I can pull from) but instead this is a revolutionary example of a story having themes and characters and even events with causes and effects".
Ultimately I am unsure why I get so surprised every time I see this phenomenon considering I grew up with "Well you see, Neon Genesis Evangelion is so good because it's the first mecha anime to have ever portrayed that piloting giant robots would probably be kinda traumatic for a kid. no other giant robot show has ever thought about this."
