the bakarina anime is done! it’s just a drop in the ocean that is the otome isekai genre so these are some recs + what you need to know about them. i just listed most of my favs otherwise it’d be too long :p
in no particular order. includes some non-isekai ones too. needless to say most of these aren’t completed yet
my next life as a villainess: all routes lead to doom
using this to plug that there’s more bakarina content in the form of light novels, manga and 3 spin-offs
an observation record of my fiancee - a self-proclaimed villainess
told in the pov of prince cecil, whose fiancee bertia straight up tells him she’s a villainess of an otome game from her past life
if you ever wonder what jeord from bakarina might be thinking half the time, this is probably close. cecil is the same kind of prince who initially finds things bored and predictable until they met the mc
the things cecil would get up to for bertia? hoo boy
also the way the mangaka draws hair is addicting to look at
the villainess cecilia silvie doesn’t want to die so she decided to crossdress
the title speaks for itself~ after remembering an otome game she played in her past life, cecil (previously cecilia) is now the one capturing the hearts of the academy ladies instead
it’s fairly new so there’s not much of it yet :c but it’s pretty interesting
the original otome game had a whole rpg combat system going on and i’m hyped to see how it’s gonna lead the story
the Angelique vibes are strong in this one
the villainess wants to marry a commoner
isabella used to play an otome game in a past life, but she was really only interested in a side character named ursch. and then one day she finds him in her mansion garden
her past life self is such a mood - i too have 100% otome games in hopes of side characters getting hidden routes but alas
definitely deserves the ‘video game’ tag. isabella can see status screens and character stats/skills etc, and all the gacha rewards and grinding transferred over after her reincarnation. she’s the isekai female protag we’ve always wanted
seriously the main ship is too op for their own good aha
deathbound duke’s daughter
in a past life, erika only managed to finish 2.5/7 scenarios of an otome game thanks to an unlucky encounter with knife-kun. with the different flags of her impending doom approaching, she takes things into her own hands years before the game events start
very fantasy-oriented (the most on this list) and pretty action-packed, once you get past the game exposition in the first 3? chapters
the world building is brilliant, from the hafan mages to the aurelian alchemists, and there’s beasts and wands and spells and dnd stuff sprinkled in
the cast has quite interesting dynamics and interwoven plotlines, and they’re all dorky in their way :>
beware of the villainess
melissa remembers a novel from her past life and desperately tries to cut off contact with the male leads, but they still make her life hell & she rages
she’s just so done with everyone and you can’t help but relate to her
definitely the funniest on this list XD melissa and her reactions takes the cake but even the shit characters are hilarious in their own way
there’s also a lot of parodies to memes etc & best of all, there’s cussing. all the shits and fucks. a whole lot of it
it’s great
death is the only ending for the villainess
penelope wakes up as the villainess from a game she’d been playing in her past life, only right now it's on the hardest difficulty where death is literally everywhere. thus she tries, well, not dying
what’s cool about this is that penelope has access to the original game system. she can see menus, choice options etc. the male leads even have affection percentages floating above their heads :> which is always cool to see (and what i’m a sucker for)
but it’s definitely one of the darker ones on this list. iirc there’s depictions of violence, abuse, drugs and then some. just a fair warning
the daughter of albert house wishes for ruin
upon realizing that she’s the villainess from a past-life otome game, mary decides to stay as one. chaos ensues
i love this manga so much, everyone is so quirky and there’s something to laugh about on almost every page. the story almost feels self-aware of itself and just lets the characters do whatever. like ride bikes
addie is so cute ;o;
it’s definitely something everyone should experience
i’m a villainess daughter so i’m going to keep the last boss
one of the finished ones!
post-annulment, aileen pulls a Lisa Tepes and asks the demon king claude to marry her. he refuses. hijinks ensues
mostly on the fantasy side, as it builds on the world of the monsters
the cast is pretty fun! aileen’s smart, funny and pretty competent in her own right. plus she and claude are positively adorable together
milady just wants to relax
post-annulment, ronia decides to open a cafe in the countryside. it later becomes the frequent hangout of a beastmen mercenary group, who are intensely feared by the townsfolk
well... beastmen. that’s all you need to know /wink
okay, that aside, it’s just as chill as the title suggests. ronia slowly makes friends she can trust, and the beastmen find a second home in the only cafe that’s willing to accept them. it’s pretty wholesome
the banished villainess! living the leisurely life of a nun making revolutionary food
despite actively trying to change her ‘villainess from a past-life otome game’ fate since childhood, elizabeth gets annulled, her noble title stripped, and is sent to a church in a neighboring kingdom. she enjoys it more than expected, despite the appearance of the ever watchful leonid
there’s plenty of 21st-century food like sandwiches, cotton candy leonid’s muscles <3
the entire cast is lovable, and can chris get an f for all the heart attacks leonid keep giving him
seduce the villain’s father
yereninovica (or just yerenica) realizes that she’s in the world of a novel she read in her past life, but as the aunt of said novel’s mc. after thwarting a kidnapping that’s basically the mc’s origin story, she takes it upon herself to also prevent the tragic death of emperor belgoat
a bit different since it switches the roles around (side character x side character) and goes into the “parent generation” of the original work
there’s also an interesting bit where the world seems to recognize her as a hijacker, and where that takes her, we’ll see in due time :o:
plus the way yeni habitually calls him ‘father’ cracks me up every time
transferred to another world but i’m the savior of an otome game
after a ritual gone wrong, “yamada tarou” (fake name) is stuck in the world of an otome game. the only way back is with a magical ring, normally obtained after becoming the lover of one of the male leads. he of course says no i’m going adventuring but the game doesn’t like that
it’s absolutely hilarious - the leads treat our mc like a heroine, and there’s a lot of otome tropes that are called out on/parodied. like the seiyuus’ names oh my god
tarou’s reactions are great and his appraisal skill is the funniest thing alive
endo and kobayashi’s live commentary on the villainess
in modern japan, endo and kobayashi start their playthrough of an otome game, which becomes a bit glitchy and odd. they discover that siegward, a male lead in the game, can hear what they’re saying. they use this chance to finally give lisolette a happier ending
much of the story’s focus is on the characters slowly warming up to lisolette, and a bit on endo/kobayashi’s irl relationship. despite being the primary drive of the story, lisolette herself hardly moves the plot - if you know what i mean
regardless it’s undeniably adorable
tearmoon empire
no isekai, more of time travel? chronoskimming?
mia wakes up 10 years in the past after being sentenced to death. now afraid of guillotine-kun, she strives to solve the issues in her kingdom that had previously led to her doom
a bit similar to bakarina in terms of concept: avoid death flags, unknowingly recruits the people she meets into her little saintess cult. the misinterpretation is very strong, and in brilliantly funny ways
it has really fun narration ngl especially in the light novel
of course, i’ll claim palimony!
to prepare for her annulment, yulia starts scheming recording her fiance’s meetups with the heroine to use as evidence. if you’re gonna lose a suitor, might as well get some money out of it, right? along the way she gets involved with rudonik, one of the male leads
no reincarnation. rather than an otome game, the villainess story comes from a book written by a side character, and the “heroine” just decided to play it out in real life
the cast together is a riot, and it’s entertaining to watch yulia only think in profits and every connection she can make to achieve it
the villainess’ slow prison life began with her broken engagement
no isekai, just a plain old villainess
post-annulment, rachel is sentenced to imprisonment. which she enjoys and is thoroughly, hilariously prepared for
everyone’s a little afraid of rachel and for good reason. it’s better to find out yourself through the LN or manga, but let’s just say that even the king doesn’t want to deal with her XD
the holy grail of eris
now this one is interesting, putting the villainess trope into a mystery ghost story. that said, no isekai either
our innocent heroine constance attends a party and encounters scarlet, an executed villainess from ten years ago. a body possession and some public embarrassment later, they decide to team up to solve the mystery that might be behind scarlet’s death
i mean, ghost villainess? sign me up
+ some honorable mentions
i favor the villainess (the heroine goes for the villainess- girls? girls? yes)
a bellicose lady got reincarnated (a delinquent reincarnates as a heroine; what a concept :o unfortunately there’s not a lot of english content for it yet)
it seems i got reincarnated into a yandere otome game (i like that the mc actively makes it so that game can’t ever happen the way it should; plus, yanderes are always interesting to study)
inso’s law (modern isekai, and quite cute!)
the reincarnated young lady aims to be an adventurer / holy guardian tiger (similar to deathbound duke’s daughter in that there’s more of a focus on the fantasy aspect)
expecting to fall into ruin, i aim to become a blacksmith (so far the only one with a shounen tag that i like; its main charm is probably the cast and their interactions with each other eliza best girl)
since i’ve reincarnated as the villainess’ father i’ll shower my wife and daughter with love (big big wholesome vibes)
level 99 villainous daughter (severely op lady who takes no shit from the people looking down at her, and regularly thinks about blowing up the academy within the first 4 chapters? hell yeah)
may i please just ask one last thing? (post-annulment, the mc literally punches everyone in the room; it’s great)
this is getting long now oops
edit: i also made a visual-friendly personally-tagged-by-me bookshelf here!

My Top Otome Villainess Manga
How long has it been since I last been here? I feel like I just woke up from my 1000 years slumber and am tired enough to go for another one. But because my last post was so successful, here are some very good manga that are my personal favorite.
1. I'm a Villainous Daughter, so I'm going to keep the Last Boss
Tumblr media
This is an overall well-done manga, with a strong plot and great conflict to keep you interested at all times. Generally, otome villainess MCs feel pretty OP because of how easily they solve their problems, but it’s quite different in this title. The MC is very competent in her plans to overcome the hurdles, but the level of threat is high enough to create some balance. Romance is very refreshing and wholesome, because the couple generally communicates well, being very mature and harmonious with each other. The comedy is always delivered on time and the art is flawless. This manga is completed and rather short, seems like it’s just promotional material for the light novel.
2. May I Ask for One Final Thing?
Tumblr media
This one can rival the previous one for the top place. If there’s 1 title you absolutely must check out in the post, it is this. The MC is a boss bitch, and it’s the first time I’ve ever thought of the word ‘stan’ and I’ve decided that I’ll never stop stanning her. If you’re not too interested in romance, but rather has an ‘eat the rich’ boner, then this girl will fucking deliver. The manga focuses on societal problems, the crimes and corruption of rich people, and it gives the best justice orgasm. It isn’t an isekai and the MC isn’t reincarnated, but that only makes shits much more unpredictable and interesting to watch. Art is gorgeous and will absolutely help you enjoy justice being delivered scenes even more. Currently has 10 chapters.
3. Bakarina: Verge of Destruction Arc
Tumblr media
Another one very close behind. This is a spin-off of Bakarina, where Katarina got sentient a little bit too late, just a year before her doom. Original Bakarina is good, but HARD MODE Bakarina is my delicious hot cup of tea. The threats here are very real and very high, because not only that she has little time left, but she also has to repent for all the evil acts that her original self did. Mind you, that’s YEARS of harassing, bullying and abusing in some cases, so this will have a more solemn tone (I’m trash for this), rather than just comedy. The characters feel more realistic now that they’re not sucked into OG Katarina’s charms, and surprisingly, this version of Katarina is quite competent. Excellent art as usual. Currently has 8 chapters.
4. The Daughter of the Albert House Wishes for Ruin
Tumblr media
Yo I totally thought this one was dropped but the new chapter just got posted today, after a 5 months hiatus. It’s about the MC, instead of avoiding her bad end, hitting the gas and trying to slam straight into it. This title is generally more light-hearted than the ones previously mentioned, but it does hint at the harsh reality of being a noble. The girl has a serious reason behind this, but it’s slightly weird considering her problem and solution. Anyway, after seeing her in her sexy party gown she shot up at least 10 ranks in my list. So please check out, at least for the beautifully smug and confident MC, which doesn’t come without an art style that’s just as gorgeous. It’s at chapter 7 right now.
5. Slow Prison Life
Tumblr media
Unlike the other MCs, this one doesn’t have a good heart deep down. And by that I mean she’s an actual fucking psychopath. She can kill a person and is willing to kill a person. Like other psychopaths, she’s very charismatic and knows how to wield her power and connections to achieve her goals. Observe as she manipulates and infuriates her ex-fiancé into insanity. The manga is a comedy and her schemes after schemes never fail to entertain me. It only has 3 chapters and to finish the whole story, I had to read the light novel. The ending is pretty meh but this is a story that’s more about the journey than the destination. (And yes, also has stunning art.)
6. Of Course, I'll Claim Palimony!
Tumblr media
This started out as my 2nd favorite, but has fallen from its grace since then due to better titles. The MC is very relatable with her bottomless love for money and economic mind, and the story revolves around her schemes to earn more money shenanigans. Other characters are also interesting, only that her opponents are too incompetent to even pose a threat to a 5 year old. Some of these later chapters fall into some cliché so I didn’t find it as exciting to read. But give it a try, it has 13 chapters right now.
That is all. Time to crawl back into my hole and live in ignorance. Maybe I’ll make another recommended manga post, which will include more quality works that unfortunately don’t make it to my favorite list.

What is a Role Isekai?
So a while ago I made this post:
https://wonderingwhereileftreality.tumblr.com/post/181794156578/what-i-love-and-we-need-more-of-reincarnation
and given the amazing response from it, and the suggestions I read through, I think I finally managed to coin the term for something in the ballpark of what these manga/webcomics are. The term I came up with was “Role Isekai”
So what defines a Role Isekai? Here are the traits I’ve found so far:
- Main Character (MC) reincarnates somewhere; usually some medieval and/or fantasy world, though it can deviate.
- MC finds their self in a particular role in a story they’ve seen before; sometimes it’s a novel/game they came into contact with in their past life, sometimes they’ve time-traveled before a certain tragic event
- If the MC finds their self before/during the event, they usually set up with 1 of 2 goals: either they try to deviate from fate (normally because it results in their death/exile), or they try to stick close to it and end up deviating it anyway.
- If the MC finds their self after the event, they have to face 1 of 2 slightly different goals: either they find some way to escape their punishment, or they embrace that punishment and end up with characters coming after them anyway
- There’s usually some kind of romance/harem involved, though it’s not ultimately required
and these are the elements of a Role Isekai. Some of the entries I made on my previous post fit these criteria, some don’t and are just typical Reincarnation Isekai (which I should make a post about later). Here are the examples of Role Isekai I’ve taken from my list:
- Akuyaku Reijou Nano de Last Boss wo Katte Mimashita/I'm a Villainous Daughter, So I'm Going to Keep the Last Boss
-  Akuyaku Reijou no Torimaki Yameyou to Omoimasu/I'm Thinking of Quitting the Villainess' Entourage
- Akuyaku Reijou no Tsuihougo! Kyoukai Kaikaku Gohan de Yuuyuu Sister Kurashi/The Banished Villainess! Living the Leisurely Life of a Nun Making Revolutionary Church Food
- Akuyaku Reijou wa, Shomin ni Totsugitai!!/The Villainess Wants to Marry a Commoner!!
- Akuyaku Reijou wa Ringoku no Outaishi ni Dekiai Sareru/The Villiainess Is Adored by the Crown Prince of the Neighboring Kingdom
- Albert-ke no Reijou wa Botsuraku wo Goshomou desu/The Daughter of the Albert House Wishes for Ruin
- Koushaku Reijou no Tashinami/Accomplishments of a Duke’s Daughter
and many more.

Do have any recommendations on Isekai based stories where the MC is actually smart? In practice I mean, not where we're simply informed that they're heralded as a one of kind prodigy due to their past experiences. Or maybe where the MC is smart in different ways? More emotionally, or simply politically? (I love Bakarina as much as the next person, but I'm talking about something that actually takes itself seriously from the beginning.)
Of course!
One of my favorites is Of course, I'll claim Palimony!, its not really isekai, it’s your typical villainess manga but where the villainess wasn’t even one to begin with, she uses the “prophecy” as it is called in the story to her advantage to make the most money out of it! She thinks more of money and is smarter in a business woman type of thing, ykno?
Another one is I’m a Villainous Daughter, so I’m going to keep the Last Boss, this one is isekai, I haven’t read it in a while and even though MC might be naive, her actions show otherwise, the same can be said about It Seems Like I Got Reincarnated Into The World of a Yandere Otome Game, which is similar to Bakarina, just add yanderes in the fit and a less naive guided MC. Both to me are smarter emotionally.
The Evil Lady Will Change, it doesn’t count as isekai either but in my opinion, Athanasia is such a smart girl without the need of knowing the future, and even though I dropped it after a while (because manhwa in general became boring to me) it has nice characters.
Also, my absolute favorite, The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion, I dont feel like I need to give an explanation as to why bUT I will explain it either way. You probably already know it or read it before, but Raeliana isn’t messing around, she’s likable, smart to her surroundings, and shows is both through her personality and actions. We don’t have to reduce her to a “well read” girl because she isn’t, unlike other mcs in manhwa she actually has common sense! She isn’t considered that special, she isn’t regarded as the best woman out there like other mcs do just because of the fact that she’s the mc. She actually puts in the effort in her actions and even when doing things that saved others’ lives she isn’t held on a pedestal because that is not realistic. Also Noah is a very very likable Male Lead and that is super rare with manhwas lately, he’s the “fuckboy i only care about you” type but done right.
Everyone has different tastes I know, and I’m probably recommending stuff you’ve already read, but to me these are the most likable mcs when it comes to intelligence.
Also, bonus:
I Want to Be You, Just For A Day (or Your Throne) and The Villainess Want to Marry a Commoner!!
They’re both really good, and while the first one is more of less romantic guided, the second one is just full of fluff. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

Otome Villainess Manga Recs
So recently I just discovered the gem that is the sub-genre otome villainess of the isekai genre. Normally, I hate isekai with a burning passion, but this sub-genre has changed that for me. It’s a normal isekai, but this time a chick got reincarnated as a villainess doomed to a bad end (usually involves death) in a generic otome game, and has to wiggle her ass out by any way possible. I’m gonna recommend some since there isn’t much activity here for a while now. But beware though, they’re isekai so originality is pretty much non-existent, and don’t bother to read the entire title.
1. I'm a Villainous Daughter, so I'm going to keep the Last Boss
Tumblr media
(aka Villainous Daughter)
This one is the first and best manga I’ve seen of this sub-genre. Words can’t describe how much I love the protagonist, Irene. She ain't fuck with nobody and has balls of steel. As the antagonist, she doesn't get much support and mainly relies on her wit and intelligence. It’s interesting to watch the protagonist using their wit to gain allies, and intelligence to strategize their way towards a goal. To me personally, Irene is terribly fucking relatable. I nearly teared up for her at chapter 1.
It’s mainly a romance/comedy manga, and it’s been years since I last saw a good romance anime/manga (because most of them are cliché). The romance feels refreshing because the main ship generally communicates well, and the comedic timing is on point. The plot is presenting a good conflict right now, because the antagonists are more threatening than just being plain assholes. It currently has 8 chapters. Worth checking out.
2. Common Sense of a Duke’s Daughter
Tumblr media
(aka Common Sense)
If you like something more serious, then this one probably suits your taste. It’s similar to Villainous Daughter, except the protagonist, Iris, has probably evaded her bad end for good and got sent to a fief as its lord. The manga hence contains a lot of textbook knowledge of economics. The vibes are more serious/mature than Villainous Daughter’s shenanigan vibes, and the romance is developed gradually, so it fits anyone who likes a slow-paced story. It currently has 47 chapters plus tons, tons of extra chapters. I haven’t read much of it to have anything to say for now.
3. The Villainess Wants to Marry a Commoner!!
Tumblr media
(aka Marry Commoner)
This one is quite the opposite. The protagonist knows she’s a villainess years before the game campaign begins, but there isn’t much planning or scheming to evade the bad end, rather she’s just enjoying her life as of now. She decides to just avoid the heroine and her capture targets, and spend time with her love interest instead. The love interest is giving me some suspicious vibes though. Marry Commoner is great if you want something more laid-back. Currently has 5 chapters.
4. Of course, I'll claim Palimony!
Tumblr media
(aka Palimony)
My second favourite in this list. This isn’t an isekai, but rather the protagonist, Yulia, is selling a prophetic manga that portrays her as the villainess. Yulia is a businesswoman who fucking loves money. That’s a love I can feel from the bottom of my heart. She doesn’t give a shit about her (ex)fiancé and the heroine because they’re braindead morons. Palimony is mainly about Yulia developing her business while the writer of the prophetic manga tries to set her up with a prince. Yulia just lets her do it because she doesn’t give two fucks about romance either. I like the topic of business and money a lot, so I’ll stick around. It currently has 5 chapters.
5. I Reincarnated into an Otome Game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags
Tumblr media
(aka Bakarina)
Bakarina is similar to Marry Commoner where the protagonist, Katarina, realizes that she’s a villainess at an early age, years before the campaign begins. It gives her a strong head start and she uses it to work hard and make friends with the game characters. The manga basically runs on the power of friendship as Katarina solves every problem by making more friends. I got a little disappointed because this power is overused, especially towards the end. But overall, Bakarina is pretty strong. Currently has 21 chapters plus extras, and it’s up to what seems like the beginning of the final arc right now.
6. Fiancée's Observation Log of the Self-proclaimed Villainess
Tumblr media
(aka Observation Log)
Something like Bakarina, but instead of trying to avoid the bad end, the protagonist, Bertia, hits the gas pedal and rams head first into it. She knows she’s the villainess and completely insists on following the game’s script, setting her fiancé up with the heroine. Like Katarina in Bakarina, she has also made friends with the game characters (but accidentally), and even though she claims to be evil, her friends love and want to protect her. Currently has 14 chapters.
That’s all. Enjoy.
