a romcom vibe where max and el try to play matchmaker for billy and steve and dustin is the “villain” who tries to thwart them at every turn. alliances are formed within the party. will and lucas are team elmax, because will has taste and lucas is terrified of going against max. mike is the only one who sided with dustin until he overhears max and el and will talking about billy and steve pining after each other, has a quietly panicked gay awakening when he realizes that most of the things they’re saying match how he feels about will, and immediately crashing their little meeting to make an overly-dramatic confession of love after which he immediately joins their team and helps them plot their next move. little does everyone know, steve and billy have been in a secret relationship the entire time. it’s dustin who spots them flirting across the counter at family video, making sure the coast is clear before stealing a kiss, and steve looks so, so happy and billy’s not being a complete asshole for once and wow has he been wrong this whole time? he doesn’t like being wrong, and this gets the better of him. he bursts into the store and makes a scene, so mad that his friends won, that they got steve and billy together, accusing steve of fraternizing with the enemy. steve and billy leap to one another’s defense, and the thing that gets dustin is how fiercely billy defends steve, getting in dustin’s face and telling him that steve’s a big boy who can make his own choices and that steve chose him. and steve gets him to back down, holds billy’s hand while he explains to dustin that he’s happy and that they know that the other kids have been trying to push them together and that honestly they were having fun watching to see what shenanigans they’d pull next. but they both make it clear that no one pushed them. this is what they want. and dustin accepts it, but promises them that he won’t spill their secret, goes back to his friends and helps them plan one last ditch effort to get steve and billy to date, knowing the whole time that this is the best way for steve and billy to reveal their relationship to everyone. it ends with steve and billy kissing to a room full of cheers. roll credits.
