7. I need fic finder help 😭 I cannot for the life of me find this one fic or remember the name, but I remember it very clearly.

So the premise was that the Lan soloed the SSC after the Wen attacked Cloud Recesses, and LWJ was sect leader (and chief cultivator??) after. He demanded a person be given to him (as compensation?? To show the sects alliance to him?? I forgot the exact reason) and WWX saw it coming a mile away that it would be him chosen to be handed over. Everyone was terrified of LWJ and was certain WWX would be miserable, but LWJ knew it would be WWX they sent and because Wen Qing vouched for him LWJ treated WWX like he deserved instead of how the sects thought he'd be, and got the shock of their life when they ended up married.

The last chapter I read (and the last update I saw, it was a (nearly finished?) wip last I read) Wen Qing sent a notice that LXC, who'd been in a coma for the entire fic up to that point, was awake.

If anyone can find this fic, I'd be eternally greatful 😭

18. hi! I just remembered a fic I read a while ago but I can't find it now and I really wanted to read it again. So what I remember about it is that it's set in cql verse and wei wuxian was taken to the nightless city. He was planning on learning about wrh's demonic cultivation and so he kind of tries to make wen rouhan favor him while secretly learning demonic cultivation. Wrh fell for it and he kinda made wwx his consort and lwj thought wwx really betrayed them. please help me find it T~T

I can remember but I can't find... But I remember that I think WWX still had a golden core. He made Chenqing to let WRH think he was only playing music to help him concentrate on creating the Yin Tiger Seal but actually WWX was using it to use demonic cultivation to create weaknesses in the Seal that he could exploit later (and also to try to protect his golden core grin the resentment). Chenqing becomes semi-sentient and wants to help and protect him. In the end he shatters the Seal while shielding everyone else from the backlash and almost dies in the process, because he drops Chenqing and so she can't protect him.

i said 5 months ago i was gonna share my thoughts on this scene and never did, so it's time to dig this out

what did wei wuxian mean by asking shijie "why would someone like another person" and why i.... don't think he's talking about lan wangji (i know-- i know. just bear with me)

or more accurately: an analysis of chapter 71, wwx's thoughts on love, and how mxtx utilizes parallels between past and present!

(Ch 71 of MDZS web revised edition //// ExR translation)

okay let's get straight to the point that's gonna make y'all want to call me a stupid bitch who can't read: i legitimately do not think wwx was talking about lwj in this scene! here's why:

first and foremost, let's remember what the status of wangxian's relationship was at this point after sunshot ended

first, phoenix mountain: a callback to their teen dynamic. wwx's silly and flirty personality is back, he teases lwj by throwing a peony at him then asking to borrow his ribbon. lwj is frustrated, etc. lwj forcefully kisses wwx then gets angry at himself. wwx finds him and gets worried that something happened to him. they walk together and talk in very friendly manner until the xuanli incident happens. by the end they part on good terms

then, yunmeng teahouse: the first scene of this chapter. wwx is feeling quite upbeat about seeing lwj as they had a nice chat last time they met. he does a lil phoenix mountan callback by throwing a peony at him, then asking him to come upstairs and hang out. lwj does but it.... doesnt end well. he's worried about wwx's worsening temper and fears he's starting to show signs of loss of control, and asks him once again to go to gusu with him. that severely sours wwx's mood, to the point of snapping at lwj when lwj implies that he'll regret it in the future. lwj realizes his mistake and they become polite again, but the atmosphere is significantly strained, and wwx even comments that he was presumptious and shouldn't have invited him over, which lwj dissents. wwx parts with a cordial but distant "thank you", and on... not great terms

what i think really makes the above hurt though is that, when wwx comes back to yunmeng and jc asks who he met. wwx answers this:

worse than jin zixuan.....oof. im so sorry hgj

so, it really is quite tragic. wwx had a nice time with lwj in phoenix mountain, and because of that he wanted to try and wash away their bad blood, ask him to hang out, recall some stories of their youth, maybe mend this relationship that became so strained during the war! what happens instead is that... he gets the harsh reminder of what (in his mind) lwj thinks of his cultivation, thinks he's not in control of it, that it's dangerous and he should be locked up. with that, they're all back to square one :(

the thing is, MDZS is quite known for being non-linear and having a humongous amount of flashbacks, and they're all set and positioned at the time they were for a reason! the thing is, as most read the novel once and then proceed to only revisit scenes separately, naturally forgetting about the grand-picture and the scenes that come before and after, we might misremember how some events play out or the state of the character arcs and relationships, and i believe the popular fanon interpretation that "omggg wwx was asking yanli this bc he likes lwj but can't admit this yet!!!! 🙈" is quite of a great example of this

but!! it's not for any bad reason, after all both the Audio Drama and CQL kinda play up this moment with some beautiful background music. this is, in the end, a romance novel! but let's put a pin on that for a bit and analyze what led to this scene, and why WWX came looking for shijie to ask her this

so as you see, the scene right before was wei wuxian and jiang cheng talking about jin zixuan, with jc asking wwx to not pick fights with him anymore since he's the heir of lanling jin. wwx is baffled because up until that point he and jc were trashtalking buddies when it came to jzx, but there's nothing they can do about it if shijie still likes him

that... makes wwx quite speechless, and he goes searching for her to get an answer. in his mind, jzx is still an awful, undeserving person! so why would shijie like him so much?

why would someone like another person?

of course, he's not as shameless to ask shijie right to her face why she likes someone like jzx, esp since she's already well familiar with his poor opinion of him, so he tries getting an "unbiased" answer by making a vague question, which in turn makes shijie think wwx is in love with someone else

now here's the thing: i feel like fandom tends to flanderize wwx when it comes to his unreliable narration, awareness of his own feelings or lan wangji's. we don't have time to get into that now, but if you've followed me for a while you know my thoughts on this

but here, specifically, i do not think wwx is in "denial about his crush" or "waving off because he doesnt want to get caught". his answer feels genuine, and honestly? really sad once you think about it

"I won't like anyone, at least not too much. Wouldn't it be like putting a rein on my own neck?"

this isn't strange once you consider the types of romantic relationships he grew up observing. other than his own parents', which he's mostly forgotten about, a strong love and attatchment sounds more like tying a rope around your neck. even though wwx is a romantic at heart who flirts easily but had been saving his first kiss for 20 years, he's still never felt this type of love for anyone before, and can't imagine putting himself through it

"So, wait... just because WWX said so you think you should believe it? You're telling me the curtains are just blue? If he's not talking about Lan Wangji, then what's the point of this scene?"

you see, something that MXTX does quite often with the flashback placement in MDZS is contrast the moments where wangxian's relationship was at its best with moments where it was at its worst. As wwx recall these memories, his pre-conceived notions about lwj get challenged and his actions and words get recontextualized! my favorite example is probably the ending of the flashback of wwx's return, to him waking up in the cloud recesses

no i'll never shut up about this flashback placement. my goddd

so, when looking at the "why would someone like another person" scene, i ask you to not look at it by itself, but as a part of the literary work that mdzs is! because, as the wangxian of the past are stuck in this cordial, but strained relationship, do you remember where the wangxian of the present have currently been left at?

if you ask me, there is something incredibly sweet about leaving these characters at their most tender --- when one is finally beginning to not only understand his own feelings, but to suspect that those feelings are requited, in which he's allowing himself to imagine a calm and happy future with him right as they march inside the lion's den --- and meeting them again when they're younger, and strained, and not fully knowing how to communicate that they care for each other, which in turn only hurts them both.

there is something very sweet about seeing wwx who is slowly realizing that he's in love, testing the waters of that, seeing how much he can take, in what ways he can ask for affection, and then seeing him again as he says "i won't ever like someone, at least not so much. wouldnt it be suffocating? wouldn't it be an impediment? wouldnt it be shackling yourself?" because you, like a cheeky grandma, can look at him and think: you don't know yet, but i've seen you then. you will like someone very much, and it won't be restraining. in fact, you'll never feel more free...

and that is the biggest thing, about revisiting this scene after you're done. because you'll look back this 20-something WWX who genuinely believed loving someone to much is like putting a rein around his own neck... and knowing he'll know a love that not only will not feel like a restrain*, but will be there to catch him whenever something does

This is more of fanon question but what do you think of stright boy wwx, who everyone knows he’s gay but him, doesn’t know his feelings even though he’s having sex with lwj.

And lwj still does shave sex with him even though he does think wwx is stright and won’t have feelings for him.

Well my honest opinion would be that whoever thinks this really does not have much of an understanding of the characters in MDZS, or the plot for that matter. Whether this is something that some truly see in the novel or something they put in fanfic, it's just bizarre.

Firstly, only a few people made assumptions with regards to WWX's feelings towards LWJ. Really it was only the juniors who noticed something between them. JC was in denial the whole time (across both WWXs lives) until he couldn't deny it any longer - and even then he tried! Personally I think WQ noticed WWX acted differently around LWJ and at some point WN picked up on something between them as well. But bar that, most people wrongly thought the pair hated each other! So that's just wrong right from the start!

WWX is extremely emotionally intelligent, he understands people very well and that includes himself as well. Yes, he lies to himself and pushes his true feelings down at times - but this is a coping mechanism. He feels so deeply, his only way to cope about certain emotions that might bring him pain, is to play them down or convince himself they are different to what they are.

WWX is just trying to protect his heart. He lies to himself about his feelings for LWJ because to him, the latter wasn't interested. Yet WWX was still drawn towards him every time they met, because LWJ is the only one he's ever truly wanted. By the time WWX and LWJ have sex, WWX is more than sure of his feelings for LWJ! In fact just before all of this, WWX is so sure of his feelings he's absolutely terrified LWJ might not feel the same way.

So I think any idea of a fanon or fanfic WWX that is as emotionally dense as 'straight boy' WWX is, is just so far from the actual character, I don't see the point in them reading the novel, being a fan or writing fic using WWXs name if this is their take on him, as it's clearly not the character MXTX created.

As for LWJ having sex with this warped version of WWX, he simply wouldn't. As much as LWJ loves WWX, he would not have meaningless sex with him just because the latter 'doesn't mind'. Just looking at the end of chapter 95 and chapter 96, where WWX thinks LWJ has only just sobered up and is upset that they had sex. This scene should be enough to show anyone that this is not in LWJs character. WWX desperately tries to salvage their relationship because he loves LWJ so much he wants to be with him anyway he can. So he makes it out it was just something friends do! LWJ is so distraught at the possibility WWX didn't have romantic feelings for him, yet shared an extremely intimate moment with him anyway. How can anyone think he would just have sex with WWX if he thought WWX wasn't interested in him. It just wouldn't happen.

So again, I think that this fanon idea or whatever it is, is just so far from the truth it's just strange! Anyone who wants this to be canon should just go find another novel to read quite frankly!

It can take time to understand your sexuality and shaming a character who actually realised it pretty fast considering the circumstances, is just shallow and ironically makes them the "oblivious" ones they so often like to accuse WWX of being. It's obvious WWX would have realised his sexuality a lot sooner if LWJ had given him a little hint back when they were teens. Which isn't LWJ's fault of course, because people seem to forget he was coming to terms with his own feelings at the time as well! But if he'd given WWX a sign, he'd have been spurred on and pursued LWJ until they were a couple.

Although he wasn't fully prepared to accept what context the above proclamation was in, he still meant it! 🥰

Oh gosh, I have too many fic ideas for MDZS but here is one: funky gender and pregnancy ahead.

LWJ returns from his travels with a beautiful woman. She’s strong and smart and when he asks permission to marry this Wen Ying, both his uncle and brother are unwilling to give permission.

You’re too young, she’s a Wen and worst of all - no Lan will have a fox bride.

But, well, LWJ is stubborn and his love dejected.

“I should’ve expected it,” they say. “I can turn myself into a woman, have Wen Qing adopt me into her sect and follow all those rules, your uncle barely took more than one look at me before he said no.”

What a fool Wei Ying had made of himself, thinking he might have a chance. But, well, Lan Wangji is stubborn, so in the morning, LXC sends out disciples to find his brother and his runaway fox bride, but for all sense and purpose, they’ve vanished into the wind.

Three years later, LXC sees his brother again, as he marches into the Lan camp with a Wen General’s decapitated head.

“They burned down our village when we refused to fight,” says LWJ, Hölle like he’s never been. “They killed my spouse and child.”

LXC pulls his brother close.

At the other war front, Jiang Cheng meets the brother he should’ve had. The last time JC had thought of him had been when rumors of the second Jade of Lan eloping with a fox broke through. His father grew sad then, spoke of the boy he couldn’t save. JC feels inadequate as a sect leader, but he hopes he can do his father proud in this. Wei Wuxian is a walking nightmare, has cultivated six blackened tails from the resentment of the dead. “Wen Chao took the three I had,” Wei Wuxian said. “I want his head and heart for my dead spouse and son.”

Jiang Yanli looks at him and thinks WWX needs help, JC thinks that perhaps he can do his father proud if he offers WWX a place in their sect, something to live for.

And then, there in the heart of Qishan, is Wen Ning. He lacks confidence, most of the time, so people think him incapable of lying, but he was taught to lie by the greatest performer of all. He does not remember the day his mother came home with an injured boy and offered him a place to stay, but he does recall the day WWX asked for etiquette lessons, and the day he returned home again with his fiancé and asked if they could hold a wedding there in Dafan, the money WN and his sister put aside for a marriage to Gusu Lan instead used for travels, and later fixing up a cottage to live in until the child would be born. The point is this: WN lies well when the situation demands it, so he lied about the child he pulled from the charred remains of his best friend’s home, claimed the kid as a direct cousin, instead of an adopted nephew. Now all he needs is to get him back to his parents.

Or: I really wanted a fic wheee wangxian meet early and wanna get married but there are enough objects for LWJ to leave his sect, but it escalates into “how long can two characters think they lost everything they loved.”

7.3 DD only with jc. Night. Jc and DD looking at jc's phone and chatting. Both jc and DD doing wire work.

7.4 gg only. Has hands tied on a floor near a column. A figure in lwj costume uses bichen to undo ties (I think it's a double as we never see his face). - Gg's wife, the AC pipe, makes an appearance. - Scene with jgy, jin ling, and jc

7.5 gg only outside with jc. - Gg's red robe is open and I'm here for it (respectfully) - They're planning out the scene where jc strangles wwx. - Xl is there in tent where gg is getting makeup touched up and getting into full costume.

7.9 temple. Jgy with wire to wwx's throat . - In between takes, gg stares at camera as if he's looking at something interesting. You've def seen this clip. 7.10 gg w jc after captured xue yang.

7.10 ggdd. At a distance under tent, DD in blue robes. With ji li, jgy, jc , xue yang. Gg laughs real big at something DD says, then he steps forward and adjusts DD's collar/robe.

7.11 Dd on blue screen. Post-timeskip costume. Joined by gg. They're filming different sword moves, talisman castings and other fight-y things. - Between takes, sitting down, DD reaches out and touches gg's ear. - Blue screen in boat. Cloud recess lectures lwj costume. Dd and gg point swords at each other from boats across the set. - There's a scene when ggdd, jc, and yb sitting in a circle. A big thing is made of them trying to block the camera, but they eventually ignore it. I've seen some fans say that ggdd are talking about omegaverse here, but I'm not certain of that (the clip I saw had basically everything DD said bleeped out). Jc def looks confused tho. I'm pretty sure DD has gg's phone between takes.

7.14 ggdd on forest road with wq - ggdd xuanwu cave. Gg in denim jacket Includes wwx holding a sword to wen chao's neck. Gg accidentally knocks wen chao's guan askew. He helps straighten it.

7.15 ggdd more xuanwu cave. - Part where wwx makes a splint for lwj. Then pretends to undress (but DD starts laughing) (alt 7.14) - Also the you like mianmian scene. They're talking thru the scene with the director. Wish I knew what they were saying. - The battle with xuanwu.

lack of history in canon, I think. never really thought about it, they both die early without much to do with one another, I don't feel like I see what's going on there. I'm very busy shipping them with their respective it's-complicated.

What would have made you like it?

More history between them would have been a good start.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything to say about it?

ok see the Draw for me here is that I think the in-universe RPF game for these two was insane. Probably unwarranted! Lots of LWJ or JC stuff being given to NMJ for some reason and some Meng Yao stuff given to WWX. But there was a time it was the big YLLZ-era ship. Righteous Chifeng-zun calling out and going to to war against the fallen Yiling Laozu! Action! Drama! Lots of possible captive scenarios! Some stories have WWX be secretly a spy for the Wens during the war and NMJ being unable to prove it, and realizing only after the war that WWX is trying to set himself up as the new WRH! Some stories have WWX save NMJ during the war, only to be corrupted by his demonic cultivation later on! It's definitely the Hot ship at the time.

It falls off in popularity after NMJ's death - it's taken over by WWX/JC (which had started becoming real popular since JC killed WWX; JC gets a lot of the darker versions of RPF!Chifeng-zun's personality traits in those stories) - but it probably leaves a decent smattering of heirs in non-RPF stories. The most popular romance story in the present is from an author who wrote NMJ/WWX, they're not quite expies but iykyk.

(the YLLZ's actual most common ship is YLLZ/Ghost General, in stories where YLLZ is the villain and not part of the main pair. These stories are overwhelmingly NMJ/JYL after she's been widowed by the YLLZ.)

I have never seen a protagonist and a "main(?) antagonist" care so little about one another and be so perpendicular to each other's stories. The Venn diagram between WWX and JGY is "WWX's sidekick/boyfriend's brother is JGY's bestie" and "the person who wants JGY destroyed threw ideas at the wall and WWX stuck."

It's very interesting. It kind of makes mdzs into the kind of case fic where the case is less important than the emotions. For me, "the emotions," "the plot," was the mystery question of: "how come wwx died? how did it end up that way?"; I suspect ardent wgxn shippers see "the plot" as "how do wwx and lwj get together". In either case, it's got nothing to do with JGY.

What would have made you like it?

so if they did have interactions/history/something I might be into it, but otoh it's such a fun thing that they're just incidental to one another that it would almost be a shame.

(at this point it may become apparent that my answer to everything is "idk, if they'd been childhood friends and had a falling out?" but what can you do.)

This would have been a cool story: WWX and JGY knew one another as kids. Maybe WWX's parents left him at an inn down the street from the brothel Meng Yao lived in when they left on the night-hunt that would kill them.

Maybe bby Wei Ying boasted about his cultivator parents and gave Meng Yao pointers. Maybe Meng Yao gave WWX food once after bby WWX lost his parents. Maybe they played together/hid together. I see something like at most a few weeks of something that someone older would have called a friendship, and then bby WWX disappearing from Meng Yao's life.

Meng Yao remembers the other boy; WWX doesn't.

Depending on how long they were friends you might need to make up a reason why Meng Yao never learned the other boy's real name; maybe part of a joke during their first meeting that WWX refused to clear up later? fits in with WWX's joke to LQY. Or if they did exchange names, you might need a reason why Meng Yao doesn't try to turn his friendship with WWX into something actionable once he learns WWX is head disciple of YMJ. The reason might be as simple as Meng Yao not knowing what became of Wei Ying until after he tried to reach his father the first time. The rejection, the humiliation, the fear of being a laughing stock and or being rejected again, pride - those might suffice to explain why Meng Yao wouldn't throw himself at the mercy of Wei Ying or the Jiangs. (Especially if their meetings were under the sign of bby WWX bragging about his parents or sth like that.)

Keeping canon otherwise the same, this makes for a starting point for "what if" contemplations I'd be interested in.

most of my ships need some... thing from canon. LXC/WWX is a complete mystery. I would be interested in making up stories about them, simply because there would be many stories to tell depending on your starting point. But I'm probably not going to want to spend effort or time on it.

LWJ and his feelings are also very much something that I'd need to consider, from LXC's PoV at least. And that's a lot.

Hm, I dunno. A very different canon? One where they have more history, or more scenes together. Possibly one where I'm more invested in LXC as well.

Are we talking about WWX/LXC post-canon, with wgxn either a thing or having been a thing? How do they navigate LWJ's feelings for WWX? Are they going behind his back? Is it sad, or sordid, is it an unexpected friendship that goes deeper than any of them expected?

Or did LWJ die from his punishment while WWX was dead? Is LXC/WWX the relationship in this story because LXC has been mourning for his brother ever since; how resentful of WWX is he? Did LWJ try to get him to promise not to resent WWX? Does LXC try to understand WWX (for LWJ) anyway, does he try to meet him halfway? Does he end up seeing good things in WWX as well? Or it is a destructive urge that drives them together? (There would certainly be a parallel between LXC and JC in a story where LWJ died for WWX. Is WWX projecting? What kind of relationship do LXC and JC have?)

I don't ship it but I think if given the opportunity WWX might joke about performing a 3zun hat trick a lot.

Oh I'm one hundred percent certain of it. In fact, I'd like to invite you to do something a little fun. Go reread the Cloud Recesses Lecture arc and then consider these actions through the lens of a tsundere. Someone who reacts very dramatically, largely negatively to their crush doing things. Not one of the annoying stock Shojo Tsunderes of the nineties, but perhaps a Clamp Tsundere. Who gets so easily flustered and overwhelmed by their crush that they end up yelling and flailing and running away because they are simply too overcome with emotion to handle themselves.

I don't doubt that hearing Wei Wuxian's laugh as a teenager sends his heart into palpitations. I'm sure that hearing Wei Wuxian complimenting him gives him such a burst of random energy that he physically has to run it out of his system. Seeing Wei Wuxian makes his mouth go dry, his heart point, his hands sweat. He is having all the reactions beneath the -_- face.

As for when he's an adult, yes, but it's more subtle. It's matured. It's warmth and bursts of happiness. It's wanting to smile and duck your head away at the simplest compliments. It's feeling more content when the person of your affections is there. It's just feeling a low level extra boost of happy at all times. The other person doesn't even need to do anything, just being there where you can reach out or touch them is enough to make your mood soar.

There can definitely still be fits of swoon and sigh and be flustered in that warm, matured love, but it's rarer and it's less overwhelming when it happens. Lan Wangji just reads to me as so happy all the time in the present timeline, long before they get together. They're having a good time pulling each other's pigtails and talking about everything and going on the body part roadtrip and it doesn't need to be more than that. It isn't the leaping flames of first love, it is that warmth of a fire that never goes out. It feeds off of its own delight and happiness at the existence of itself. It does not need to be given more in order to burn for the rest of his life.

I'm sure though that once they're married, being able to kiss Wei Wuxian whenever he wants is a new and unique way of being able to express all that Wei Wuxian does to him in a very fun manner.

A) Complete, medium length: Lan Zhan steps into the path of Wen Zhuliu coming for Wei Ying, loses his golden core. Afterwards, he tells no one but goes into seclusion. WWX is fine, and eventually comes to visit in Gusu. LWJ is reclusive as he is not a cultivator anymore (so he grows old faster than WWX), but they still build a connection. No solution for the golden core, just dealing with the new facts of life for LWJ, and building back some hope.

B) Similar in vibes, also complete: WWX travels to an alternative universe, where JC died and WWX is somehow the Jiang Sect Leader. He meets LWJ at a conference. The new universes' WWX was not friends with LWJ. LWJ's leg was still broken after the Wen Indoctrination and never healed, so LWJ is wheelchair bound (pushed by Jingyi). WWX builds up a friendship with LWJ but I think in the end he goes back to his own universe. This one sounds like that one fic where the theme was something like 'be careful what you wish for', iirc WWX wanted to see either his parents or JYL alive 🤔 ~Mod L

Generally, all I remember was that WWX went back to the past (Studying at GusuLan Arc) after dying during the Burial Mound Siege. He was so traumatized over it that he has decided he does not want anything to do with the cultivation world anymore. His personality changed (from cheerful to downright depressed, from lively to soulless) so much that everyone began to notice and wondered what was up.

However, I remember a scene which pushed him to flee Gusu. He was walking and listening as NHS talked and talked trying to get him back to his old personality. They met NMJ on the way. WWX on pilot mode said that he (NMJ) has heart demons and without ado removed the resentful energy lingering inside NMJ. This shocked the Nie brothers, the Twin jades and JC (the latter two having just arrived and witnessed WWX manipulating resentful energy).

WWX obviously panicked, packed his belongings and flees from GusuLan because he thought they would kill him again due to his manipulation of resentful energy.

How i remember it, It's how WWX died and get "resurrected" as a ghost thing by another character (could be Hua Cheng, could be Luo Binghe idk they definitely wore robes with the color red and black lol). So WWX started chatting with his "savior" and they told him that he can grow powerful by eating other demons in the BM(?) But as he grew powerful, he also shapeshifted as a white tiger for a while because he needs to hunt to maintain his human form, and by doing so he needs a lot of demon meat so he needs to catch food with his tiger form a lot (I'm kinda confusing myself if WWX started as a tiger from beginning or not, but it definitely involves him as a ghost/tiger!)

Other details that I kinda remember: 1) he re-introduced himself to the cultivation world as "Wei Wuqian" or something similar, he thought it was funny 2) nearby people who lived around the place WWX would hunt depicted him as a guardian/god and would gift him some spicy meat as prayers 3) said people would defend him when cultivators were trying to hunt this weirdly nice, babysitting as a secondary job, only likes his meat spicy tiger kitty that they call "evil spirit, dangerous and needs to be gone" 4) I think he has white hair but can change to black, it could be somewhat glowing hair but I'm not sure about this detail 5) LWJ definitely tried the "give big kitty spice and he'll play nice" trick he got from the village people to see if it was a malevolent ghost or not 6) tiger!WWX had been written eating a corpse in the fic at least once

to add on to the anon who brought up the "read the fic" fic, imagine dbd!lwj meeting canon!lwj. especially if ot3 with wangxian ends up being the end pairing.

canon!lwj would definitely scorn his dbd counterpart for having flimsy feelings as wwx should be his one and only. but there would probably be undeniable jealousy for just having a friend that expands his point of view so much as well as seems to understand him on an intrinsic level.

you know who would also be jealous of friendships? jzx. and probably jyl just because she knows that dbd!jzx would have been easier to get along with or mellows out a lot more in comparison to hers. not that she loves him any less.

also zyx probably wouldn't even make it to the end of the heavens interfered showing before promptly deciding to pretend to unexist; if wwx's nasty m horny thoughts were shown...

then again, i don't think zyx is the only one that would have that reaction. in other reacting to canon fics, everything is still pretty much shown in the perspective of wwx right? but using dbd, which although is an unreliable narration has a lot of at least zyx's psychoanalysis of the other characters and the cultivation realm politics as a whole. everyone is getting exposed in this version:

lwj's horniness, the whole lan clan's strict adherence to the rules, wwx's squirrely brain, jwy's inferiority complex, jzx's foot-in-mouth disease, et cetera et cetera

we need to be very particular about when in the fic will character iterations meet each other. dbd!lwj is Going Through It (like every other fucker in the fic), and this isn't even his final form.

(and i can't talk about his final form because there's still stuff and spoilers and organic development and aaaaaaaaaa)

regardless of love shack endgame, friendship jealousy is something that canon!lwj will not consider until he realizes... how not alone dbd!lwj is (will be). noticing the ripple effects, small but significant enough.

if ot3, at first it galls canon!lwj that there's enough for him to love two people like that. y'know, the navigation of polyamory in a mainly monogamous society (for cultivators, bc the emphasis on cultivation partners. harems aren't new)

(lmao okay i'll say one thing: if it's the wangxian ot3, technically... zyx would rank higher than either wangxian, so they'd end up zyx's harem bois)

like, let's say iterations are allowed to meet each other at the same age/time.

teen lwjs: dbd!lwj would both envy and disdain canon!lwj for the single obsession he has. less distractions, but also the intensity would frighten him (dbd!lwj has more stuff to think about, so the energy for horney is being diverted). canon!lwj would disdain dbd!lwj for caring about some rando's opinion of him (like how you get used to loneliness and trick yourself into thinking you hate other people, if only to pretend you chose it yourself), but after seeing why dbd!lwj latched onto zyx as a friend it'd make him reel.

late teens/young adult!lwj: redacted. it will be complicated, if only bc of war and wangxian development and maybe/maybe not demonic cultivation. adding zyx to the mix... and we already see (or at least i hope i portray) that zyx and wwx have the potential to get along (at least from dbd!lwj's pov). and dbd!lwj jelly af. i think i already said that dbd!wwx officially has a crush on zyx (the lwj crush is lagging but also there; there's just more... uh. 'homoerotic tension' at the moment between zyx and wwx from wwx's pov), so for things planned during the war, even if zyx doesn't want to be involved w wangxian, they're already stuck in their relationship (platonic or romantic). canon!lwj was angsting like hell during the war with regards to wwx, so dbd!lwj will probably go through similar hell, if not more hell bc he has actual romantic jealousy rather than the jealousy of brotherly intimacy between jc and wwx.

i think both lwjs will think the other lwj has it bad, not worse, but adjacently bad. neighborly locations in hell.

post-war pre-ending lwjs: there's a final iteration of wangxian + zyx evolution. if not ot3, wwx's crush on zyx will need to be resolved. they will become good friends. i promise. and if ot3...

ha. hahahahahha. i will put lwj through some shit. lighter hearted shit, but shit nonetheless. but... things will end before the canon shitshow

so each lwj at this point will think the other has it worse bc they don't know their futures.

and then post-ending is as i described above.

with jzx, it's also the case of 'you can't miss what you don't know'. like, dbd!jzx in ch 19 is not having a great time (gonna drop the jzx pov chapter post-indoctrination camp arc huehue) and his friendship with zyx will evolve.

pre-BFF Breakup, canon!jzx would sneer outwardly, thinking that some bootlicker got to his mirror self. and then he'd see the conversations that gucci gang had, the immediate change to himself... it's not like he could have that. it'd be nice, maybe.

BFF Breakup: well, of course dbd!jzx would be betrayed, canon!jzx thinks. everyone is out to use him - that's a lesson he was able to absorb growing up in lanling (even if he sucks at playing the game, and his way of protecting himself is shutting everyone out). dbd!jzx sometimes thinks it's better to have never met someone that made him feel cared for and lose it. better to have not known what there was to lose.

BFF Makeup: canon!jzx is growing up, maturing. the subsequent maturation of gucci gang's friendship, and his capacity to recognize its worth makes him feel bereft. but i don't think he's a jealous or envious guy. makes him think what could have been, but he's busy dadding it up so canon!jzx will channel lessons learned to be the Best Boy and tackle the problems in lanling. dbd!jzx is gonna be more jaded (he learns a lot of things he wishes he can take back, even if he recognizes that it's better to have learned it) (ie. his freakout in ch 19 is him becoming way less ignorant of the state of affairs way too early, and it's bc of getting involved w zyx), but he is thankful for the lessons he's learned and that he's done the right thing even when it it's difficult (spoiler spoiler spoiler things will happen aaaaaaaaaa okay)

post-ending: canon!jzx will be jealous as fuck. because he's dead and dbd!jzx will live lol. maybe if he knew things earlier. if he took more action. maybes for the rest of his afterlife, until he reaches the front of the reincarnation queue

i think jyl would not be jealous. she'd see it as jzx's potential to grow, and work with what she has. that's another life, this is this life and the man she loves.

on everyone else's reaction to actually reading the fic: when is it being read, and up to what point?

the more i think about it, the more i think it depends on which chapter is being shown. like, i'm not shy about saying what's on my mind as long as i choose to share it and that's the same with zyx. even if it's revealed inadvertently, as long as the thought isn't half-baked and has a line of justification, i'm good with making a clown out of myself. but it's the really mean, uncharitable thoughts that zyx has that would make them uncomfortable. thoughts that if said, can never be taken back. those sort of things.

hmm how to say it. idk if it comes across - like, zyx is only properly behaved bc it gets them what they want and they want to behave. they're okay being a little silly and not having some dignity every once in a while. their appearance and comportment only matters so much because they understand the stakes of fucking up - otherwise there would be no fucks

pond soup, rolling on the ground for days, gremlin time. they care more about holding themselves up to their own standards

the embarrassment would come from 1) mean thoughts about people when they don't like mean people, thus making them a hypocrite 2) being wildly off the mark about how people feel about them (knowing that they are perceived, trying to account for it, and being wrong) 3) knowing something thinks sexually-adjacent stuff to them when they don't have the same sentiment towards that person is... incomprehensible, inconceivable, uncomfortable, cannot be retained in the mind. immediately loses their memory.

everyone else would be very uncomfortable, to say the least. throughout my life, i've been told that my assessment of other people's motivations, social dynamics, and wild guesses have been uncomfortably accurate. it's even worse with chinese social dynamics (from what i feel, but modern times, blah blah grain of salt - it's fiction and i'm modeling my fic after what i know and experience)

some things aren't meant to be said. chinese is a very high-context culture and language. to say things so plainly and bluntly, in such a clinical and dissecting way - it'd terrify the audience. 'bu shi ren' not a person, they'd call zyx.

(it's like zhou le's discomfort with zyx x1000000000000)

zyx's words and how they are said are the equivalent of dropping a nuclear bomb. no one wins. what can you say as a rebuttal? if you attack zyx, they'll readily admit their own faults. in fact, by dragging the fic out and exposing zyx, they will no longer give a fuck about keeping up. it's the final gambit, they'll dps the cultivation realm and fuck off. they will actively discard all relationships here. but if there are people who are willing to reach out even after everything, they will not deny them

kinda went through something like this in middle school/high school. it wasn't my most tactful moment, but there were two instances that i dropped some really mean truth bombs on someone (tldr there was a situation and i just couldn't take it anymore). it really fucked up our friendship for months each time, but after giving each other space, we were able to be honest and talk about stuff again

i'm sure wwx wouldn't mind reaching out. like in ch 14, while hurt by zyx's honesty, he was also drawn towards it. + the true convolutions of their way of thinking is enough to bring him back

lwj... he'd be really hurt. really really hurt at first. probably after pondering it, would accept it and unhurt himself. and he'd also go after someone that has seen him in a less-than-perfect light, and still thinks well (enough) of him.

jzx: i'm not talking about this. saving it because his feelings are very relevant to the next few chapters

I rag on jc a lot but I think ppl should keep in mind he was in a difficult position in the flashback arc. and he's never been a risktaker. sure, he could have given his starving brother and his commune some money during his visit since they're apparently on the same page. he could have offered to take a-yuan, literal toddler, away from near certain death. he could have defended the wens more using his political power. he could have even used to his debt to them to justify why he would defend a bunch of wens. and it's upsetting to see this because there really are fifty-odd elders here who are absolutely innocent and jc is the only one with the political power and any reason to make a real difference in their extermination campaign

but he was a teenager with a lot of unprocessed trauma and emotional issues being actively manipulated by older cultivators, he had an incredibly important responsibility to his dead parents and to his family, and neither he nor wwx were willing or able to talk it out, and I hate to say this but wwx made choices that did not make it easier...at a certain point pushing blame around seems like like exercise in futility. wwx and wen ning at least, would have been targeted by the jins anyway. I don't think jc could have stopped it without destroying his own sect, he wasn't an experienced or powerful or politically savvy enough leader. and I don't think it's fair to reduce his motivation down to personal self-interest or wanting to maintain his political status or his privilege, which is what a lot of haters seem to be doing

so yeah he definitely could have done more, but it's more his postres actions that really piss me off. for one, it's frustrating how he only cares about how he feels and rarely extends any empathy and compassion to anyone else. very self-centered...that's why I like lwj so much more postres, since he actually underwent self-reflection and examined his actions and then changed his behavior and worked to improve his sect. thats why a lot of people like him, including wwx! but I honestly find 1:1 comparisons of them reductive because they're in very different situations. even if that's kind of the point of their characters

jc is like...hes a very well-written and compelling character and I get why people want him to have done better than he did. and there's a lot to be said for jc not having the social and material support structure, and the tools to handle his emotions, that lwj had his entire life. imo it's not productive to blame jc when they're in such different positions, and I think its unfortunate that hardcore haters only focus on the ends and not examine the process with some compassion. lwj did what he could, but he was protected by his sect and elders as jc wasn't. the tradeoff is that he legitimately had very little power in his sect to do anything on a larger scale even though he wanted to. we see how much he was punished for even visiting wwx, not to mention his three YEARS of seclusion after attacking his elders. giving wq money, leaving cultivation meetings he didn't approve of, speaking for the wens right before they turned themselves in, and saving a-yuan...these were small things (except saving a-yuan, actually that was huge), but they mattered. wen ning remembered. and jc could have done some of them had he wanted to

something that impedes the discussion is that I think both the story and the fans are encouraged to think of skill as a moral triumph. wen ning refutes this mindset a little, but of lot of jc criticisms seem to imply that being bad at cultivation means he's then a bad person. it's something that frustrates me about the story, and another reason I love wen ning. I prefer to analyze how characters react to being poor at a certain desired skill, and what commentary on the social structure the text is providing

JL: Uncle, stop it.

WWX: I never wanted you to thank me.

JC: That's right. Doing good deeds and never asking for repayment. Just for your noble personality. Surely different from me. No wonder when Father was alive, he kept saying that you were the one who really understood the Jiang Clan's motto and demeanor.

WWX: Enough.

JC: Enough what?! It's enough when you say it's enough? You know best. You're better than me at everything. Talent. Cultivation. Intelligence. Temperament. You all know. I am not that noble. Then what am I?!

JL: Uncle, your injuries!

LWJ: Clan Leader Jiang, be careful not to go too far.

Stephanie can you tell me if it’s normal to have finished both the unt4med and md zs (censoring bc I don’t remember how tagging works on tumblr and I don’t want anything seemingly negative I might say to make people come and bother you) and have found the romance aspect of the story to be the least interesting thing ?

I think WW is an extraordinary character and his story was so epic. Granted I didn’t like the writing at all in the book. And I was so captured by his motivations and his actions, but seeing how people talked about the love story online I was expecting to be blown away and instead… it kind of fell flat imo? Like I found LW to be kind of boring in how his character was executed, mostly because I couldn’t really see his thoughts, and I found WW’s relationship with him to change too abruptly from one kind of relationship to another. Like, compared to WW’s relationship to his siblings, that made me cry on several occasions, for how tragic and epic LW’s actions are , they didn’t evoke that much of an emotion in me. Like, fuck JC honestly but at the same time there’s something so brutal and tragic and captivating about what happens between him and WW.

Idk. The story is absolutely fantastic but I feel weird because I feel like I appreciated completely different things from what the majority of the fans liked instead.

Idk what "normal" in this context means or why you would feel weird about... having a different takeaway from a piece of media?

Like, I don't understand why anyone would have a concern about what is "right" or "wrong" to like about a piece of media. Like, if you were missing the messaging of the series or idk ignored important themes to focus on a weird background ship or whatever, sure, I guess that's "wrong" but... I don't understand the need to be validated for not caring about a certain character or character dynamic? Like the series however you choose. There's... no wrong way to do it. And even if there WAS a wrong way to do it, comparing yourself to this particular fandom... like... there's no need to compare yourself to most of these people. A lot of MDZS/CQL fans are utter freaks.

But getting to the brunt of your question. Idk man.

I liked WWX/LWJ and I liked LWJ as a character. I actually really, really enjoyed that they don't just get together JUST because they like each other's personalities and how they mesh or JUST because they are equals in a world where most people come up short when compared to them but VERY much because they understand and support each other ideologically and are willing to risk the same things to achieve their ideological goals.

The fact that they connect not just emotionally or physically but also mentally and philosophically is something that is missing in a LOT of romance plotlines. It's not "circumstance brought us together and now we're trauma bonded" (which is certainly great in a lot of cases, ngl) but just this larger calling.

We get to see them flirt and be shy and be silly, the way teenagers are. But we get to see them be torn apart and then back together not just ~because of circumstance awww~ but because of a genuine betrayal where no one is really at fault, it's just because of how society functions. Their relationship heavily reflects and feeds into the themes of the story and their own character arcs while letting them be their own people with their own arcs.

I think a few bits of how their relationship is executed is perhaps a bit sloppy, especially if the manhua is properly reflecting what happens in the novel, and I think "ACTUALLY I WANT TO SLEEP WITH YOU" being almost verbatim dialogue during the violent climax of the story is both lazy and cringe but... their overall arc was really well done.

I think in general, the strengths of weaknesses of MDZS (not necessarily CQL) is that MXTX has great ideas and a few great points of executions but REALLY struggles with the minutiae. I think this is true of the story at large but I'm a lot more forgiving of the minutiae sometimes lacking in LWJ/WWX because... well... the story isn't about them.

They are a reflection of the story but the story exists on a much, much larger scale than their romance. (Or implied romance, when it comes to CQL.)

I'm fine with that, though. In most of the moments that count, the execution is great and the total arc is believable, enjoyable, and developed at a fairly even pace, outside of some jumps.

#i also largely enjoy the lack of LWJ's perspective #BECAUSE the absence makes a lot of the jumps/gaps in tehir development make more sense #LWJ was living his own life and getting to a place where he could meet WWX where he was #and that's why their relationship progresses (or regresses)

I truly am in deep with this hyperfixation and I am making it everyone's problem.

Yes! Please keep me updated when you get to that point because I want all of your perspective! Since I haven't read most of the book (just a few scenes to verify certain things) I wanna know if it's as chaotic in the books and if you liked the changes!

LWJ's individual arc is actually something I really enjoyed. WY did a really good job playing it out, from someone who believes wholeheartedly in the rules because his mother died for it so he has to because if he doesn't then does anything matter? and then WWX bursts through the door with like the most minimal but important rules and throughout the story, he learns the difference between doing what's right and doing what's just and when each has its place and its wonderful. I do think that LWJ definitely had more wiggle room to help but that's a convo for another time (and maybe a meta I might write later). And the three months in-between with JC where like JC is a sect leader of a pretty much dead sect and he still makes the time to search for his brother (which is like the 3rd time JC picked WWX over his sect) and he loves him. And then he watches them split and wonders why when they love each other. And knows that JC loves WWX. And LWJ loves WWX too. And there's so much!

I, too, adore W@ngChengX!an! There are so many ways they balance eachother! ChengX!an pre-canon and the angst during the SSC, W@ngX!an during Cloud Recesses, Zh@ncheng after WWX leaves and LWJ wants to learn more about WWX and just learns more about JC too (NHS knows all and introduces them bc I'm always a huge fan of the LXC and NMJ playdates with the baby bros), the three months in between, the 13-16 years in between! The jealousy, the angst, the potential! I could go on for days! (I'm actually planning to do an AllCheng agenda post with various ships and dynamics and ideas because while I can't write fic for shit, I can headcanon my days away).

Their perspectives balance out too! WWX thinks in the broadest perspective of what is Wrong and What is Right, JC is the mid-ground perspective of what are the long-term implcations in society, can it impact how we do other things and how can we plan around it and LWJ (now) thinks of the individual, based on their merit and who they are and becomes less judgemental as a result. I think that's mainly why I don't ship W@ngX!an as much as I could have. But the three of them together have way more going for it (also I have a very specific headcanon that WWX does the flute, LWJ plays the guqin and JC sings the lyrics for WuJi since I feel like a grumpy grape like him must be great at slam poetry and lyrics).

Maybe its because I know that they way my loved ones show that they care is because the question me. They care enough to confront me, to meddle, to ask, to let me rant and help me find my way to the choice that's best for me. So even in the most enabling and unhealthy fics I read, I always want that. The "I will side with you, always, but I want you to know my side too." The vulnerability of opening up and showing what the implications are. The messy fights, the yelling, the poking at soft spots is something I will always want to see.

Like one of my fav scenes is when JC confronts WWX before they decide to stage the fight for this reason! Like you see where their priorities lie and that they both have valid perspectives for the positions they're in but they come to the slow realization that they can't have it all. And WWX I think does want to leave, he doesn't want to pretend he's okay and he doesn't want to spend a second more fronting for the sake of YMJ because he's done enough, fulfilled his debts and he wants a little break before even attempting to come back home (Burial Mounds doesn't sound like a good long-term solution but I also don't think he expected to live long).

LXC is definitely an enabler but I think it's also similar to JYL's response to trauma. And he does like so much for LWJ because he put all his love for his parents and family on his brother (gives me a lot of Itachi and Sasuke vibes but less extreme and with less trauma). So, similar to JC and WWX, when LWJ tells him something in a sure tone, LXC believes it.

Like considering demonic cultivation and resentful energy are so harmful (look at the Nies), it would be like if you're brother came to you and told you that he did some crack and now has superpowers after disappearing for months and you believe him because if WWX told JC the stars were falling, JC would have run for cover without looking at the sky. Like, the amount this man trusts WWX is insane. It might have been despiration but also he knows if anyone can do it, it's his Shixiong. And every scene, he asks, he asks WWX to clarify, to let him know, to let him and I just can't with these boys.

Wang Zhuocheng will always impress me because this was essentially his break out role! And the intro scene where LJY mentions that JC killed WWX so why is he checking in MXY? The flashbacks with his family and how much he yearns to keep them together but we know that its gonna fall apart! And his interactions with Jin Ling (who also did an amazing job in the role) were perfect despite the actors being like one year apart in age! Just all of it was so good and I will never not be impressed!

Sorry for the essays! Just really excited about the Untamed and I have a lot to gush about.

Kind of incoherent

But I'm wondering whether there's something to be said about the danger of trying to force a family on people in the show/novel. Trying to put the jiang family in context - yzy vs jfm and the kids on who is family and I think I'm going to end up on all of the families.

I think the easiest way to start is wen yuan, maybe.

I run into a lot of 'wwx isn't really a-yuan's parent' discourse, and I absolutely think this is valid in that wwx does none of the 'parenty' bits of 'taking care of child, providing for them, being stable so child can explore the world', but I also want to think about that without invalidating the way that wwx is part of his larger, communal, family. He's been accepted by the surviving Wen elders for 2 generations and given a sort of claim to kinship. And the important thing is that while we as a fandom often tend to use this to invalidate WY's original family, wwx doesn't need to in order to say 'this is family'.

and sort of comparing that to lwj, who does need to invalidate - or at least to hide - wy's family, to claim him as lsz instead of wy. And how that could be a terrible thing and a rejection of wy's identity, especially since the whole - IDEK what MXTX does with her weird memory issues with everyone - and that the reason it's not is that all parts of this new, cobbled-together family want to be together and are willing to make whatever compromises are needed to make it work.

Which, of course, is why the Lan family as a whole works

Because even if lwj and lxc have bad parents, everyone they regularly interact with in the Lan clan seems to be willing to work with them, to get things done, and to do their best for them as a family. It could be argued it’s actually the absence of their toxic parents which makes the family seem as united as it is, and we can argue till the cows come home about if the Lan (and especially LQR) are overly restrictive, but no one seems to argue that lqr doesn’t love and want his nephews – not just around but in his family. Or that lxc and lwj don’t want both each other and their uncle – and the rest of their sect, including, eventually, wy/lsz.

Which of course is why I needed to go back to wen yuan before I could address the truly fucked up Jiang family

Because where this started was my thinking about yzy and her refusal to accept wwx into her family. And the way that no one in that family seems to know where they do - or where they want to - stand in relation to the family as a whole.

It's - the thing is that it isn't just a 'jfm wants to adopt wwx and his wife says no'. Because it's honestly not clear to me that jfm does want to adopt him. He wants him around as a reminder of wwx' birth family, and he wants to spoil him, but (speaking without doing the research to be sure if this is on point) I'm not actually sure he wants to be wwx's parent. More importantly, I'm not convinced jfm wants to be anyone's parent.

So we end up with a family where:

Yzy definitely wants jyl and jwy/jc (toxic as she can be about it) as her family. Arguments can be made about whether she wants jfm or just wants him to stop fucking up and would be happy if he did that by vanishing, but she def. doesn’t want wwx in her family.

Jfm arguably might not want any of yzy, jyl, or jc – though we absolutely see some evidence that he’s trying to at least fulfill social pressures to be head of household and father. Definitely does want wwx, but maybe not as family. And you know, I don’t think he’s talked about this to his wife at all because she also doesn’t seem sure whether wwx is supposed to be her adopted kid who she’s trying to reject or an uppity servant who she’s trying to put in his place.

Jyl wants both wwx and jc as her brothers. Uncertain if she wants her parents or if she’d go non-contact if she had the option.

Jc wants everyone and wants them all to love each other, but is super confused about how that should/could work out, especially with wwx. I would honestly be both shocked and disbelieving if someone said jc had any sort of coherent idea of how his dream family was supposed to look beyond ‘nice to each other’ and ‘sometimes evidence of affection, maybe’?

Wwx is almost as confused as jc. He pretty clearly loves jc and jyl, but also … doesn’t call them siblings. Doesn’t seem sure what to make of jyl calling them siblings. Social structure absolutely makes this even more complicated as wwx is left going ‘they’re both inferior to me bc I’m the most awesome cultivator and thus I need to protect them and they’re my social superiors’. And that’s before we add yzy and jfm.

Unlike wy, wwx is super attached to his birth parents – or at least, the idea of them and his memories of them. He wouldn’t want to be a Jiang, because he’s a Wei. How much of that is self-protection in response to yzy, idk, but even if yzy had a change of heart during the Cloud Recesses arc when we first meet wwx and went ‘let’s adopt this’ I think he’d say no. And with the way he calls jfm ‘uncle’ – I think I remember this anyway – I don’t know that he wants to be jfm’s kid either. Even if he hadn’t seen how jfm treats his actual kids.

this in relation to my guilty reddit aita pleasure and the number of truly awful 'my family member is forcing this person into my family' stories and much as I love the Yunmeng Trio as 3 Jiang sibs … I don’t think there’s a way for the family to work, and I don’t think it’s just yzy who is the reason.

Which brings me to the Jin.

And my initial thought with them about how, without wanting to invalidate MY/JGY’s very understandable desire to have a father who would recognize him, he’s doing the same thing to his father and his father’s wife that jfm is doing to yzy. And how maybe the Jiang family is meant to be a lesson – and another way in which jgy and wwx are mirroring each other – about the danger of trying to force people to be your family. And JGS (may he rot) makes it clear that it doesn’t matter whether yzy’s fears are right and wwx is jfm’s son.

Because unlike jfm, who can be believed when he says ‘that’s my friend’s son, not mine’, JGS makes no attempt to say ‘that’s not my bio kid’. But he still gets to say ‘that’s not family’ (and so does his wife, little though we see of her) and I kind of think we’re supposed look at him and –beyond thinking he has dreadful sexual ethics even before he commits explicit rape – think about how responsibility to his children might actually mean not bringing them into a household where they’re not wanted.

Like – it’s cute to imagine JZX and JGY trying to be siblings and it’s absolutely the ‘proper Chinese wife’s place’ to accept their husband’s children (currently reading Exemplary Women of China, which is a great translation of 列女傳 the 18 BCE set of ‘what a good woman looks like’ stories and it’s got a lot of ‘good wives accept their husband’s concubine’s kids or their stepkids’ stories), but also I don’t think MXTX is asking readers to just accept misogynistic social standards and say ‘the husband sows and the wife reaps’ (though, see the Nie family who I hope to get to later…)

So despite what ms thinks and tells her son, JGS isn’t necessarily supposed to bring his bio-children home (or, he absolutely is by social rules, but MXTX doesn’t necessarily seem to agree that that’s the right thing to do). And if he does, then realistically – by standard social norms – he should bring his mother too (which if we’re being cynical is obviously why ms might have wanted a child by him). But given how positively we’re shown ms in canon, it wouldn’t make sense for the answer to be as simple as ‘then don’t visit prostitutes’ (though, like, ‘don’t cheat on your spouse; either get her on board or keep it to yourself’ is definitely a reasonable option, especially since men could divorce their wives ….)

And idek what Mo Xuanyu is meant to show. I mean, we’re obviously not supposed to think ‘bring the kid home and then later kick him out’ is okay. But was bringing him into Lanling to learn cultivation in the first place good? Bad? Would that have been the right choice is JGS hadn’t been a dick about it?

Which leads us to the Nie, who I absolutely cannot be unbiased about because I love them

I love that the Nie are our canonical ‘look, non-blood sibs can work’ family. And also our ‘ but seriously, guys, don’t do this’ family.

Nmj and nhs, who have canonically different mothers (even if it’s only Word of God that nhs’ mum is a concubine rather than a second wife) are our obvious ‘here’s the right way of doing – I can’t even call it marital infidelity but kids by multiple women’. But we don’t see what that looks like and we don’t understand it – which makes perfect sense since we’re seeing it from the perspective of wwx, who fundamentally doesn’t have a clear sense of what family should look like

And nmj is also at the center of yet another ‘don’t try to make a family work when not everyone agrees’ with jgy in 3-zun. Where even if we all agree that nmj wants to have a working relationship with jgy, I think it’s obvious (does anyone remember that awesome tumblr post about the vows and comparing 3-zun with our historical examples? I’m writing this at work and don’t have that on me … ) that nmj was absolutely not ready for the type of relationship that 3-zun is at the time when lxc talked him into it.

And 3-zun is also at the center of yet another ‘doomed triad’ (wow mxtx likes those) with nhs, jgy, and lxc. Which is one of those that manages somehow to do both. It’s a great set of ‘brothers’. Lxc and jgy really do seem to like nhs (although maybe … less so … by the end). Nhs really does seem happy to have extra ‘siblings’. I mean, the fact that he calls them all his brothers and they let him is actually a huge sign of affection from everyone involved. And yet – well.

We all know how this story ends, don’t we?
