When Mika proposes, it's with the latest 2010 Mercedes sportscar model. Nico jumps into his arms, and then immediately reaches for the key. It's better than any ring, he tells himself.

"Did you know I used to have posters of him on my wall when I was a boy?" Nico wiggles his brows to the strangers at the Ibiza party lounge. Nico knows why Mika wants to get married in the party capital with no one else in their distinguished motorsports circle around. He's embarrassed. 42 year old, second marriage, pretty young thing on his arm. It all screams midlife crisis.

Well, Nico doesn't need to make it easy for him.

"Mouse." Mika's voice is warning, hand on his shoulder. Nico immediately turns to Mika, smiling, and crawling on his lap.

"What, it's true," Nico toys with Mika's collar. Mika's blonde hair falls over his eyes, hiding the carefully botox'd crows feet when he frowns. "You remember."

Mika's hand rests on Nico's hip. "Don't be trouble." Nico grinds down on him.

The strangers now look away from their public display, embarrassed, and Nico takes it as a win.

A GP2 crash shattered Nico's motorsports dreams, and he kept his word to his father, did 3 years at Imperial, graduated with flying colours with an engineering internship at Williams waiting with his name on it. Nico opted to instead chase after rallying and endurance races, cheering for Mika and waiting for him. It wasn't even hard, after Nico decided his favourite Finn was his white whale. Slipping into the hotel sauna where they were alone, and not wearing much. Mika objected weakly, the flimsy excuse for his conscience, and gave in anyway.

Nico grew up like a little prince so it's hard to spoil him. Mika does, anyway. A short fling of a childhood infatuation turns into something akin to whirlwind romance, it's dangerous and fun and a little bit taboo, and Mika leaves his wife for him.

Nico knows his father would disapprove. Mika knows it too, even as Nico shows up beside him more often than not. But it's nice, Mika's a large, protective figure behind him and always has a sweet name for him: mouse, pigeon, pet, darling, something in Finnish Nico can't quite decipher.

When they're in bed together, Nico can think of how neither of them are going to F1. Yes, Mika's technically on 'sabbatical' but everyone knows. The slight swell of his gut gives it away, but it's okay Nico will be fit enough for both of them, breaking up his croissant so it's harder to notice he hasn't touched it and feeding Mika. He likes that Mika has that touch of vanity of him, that keeps dyeing his hair blonder and is susceptible to the Monaco lifestyle of keeping everything looking young, tight, tucked in procedurally. It makes Mika not the dashing hero from his childhood dreams, humanizes him. And when Mika calls Nico beautiful, it is both a fact and tinged with envy.

"Pigeon, we have to go to the F1 paddock this weekend." Mika tucks Nico's long lock of hair behind his ear.

"Why?" It's technically their honeymoon.

"Mercedes are trying to get Lewis. Hamilton-Schumacher lineup. Ron called me to convince him to stay."

Lewis... Lewis Hamilton, 2008 world champion. The wonder rookie. Nico knew him once upon a time, when they both promised they'd make it to Formula 1 together, childish promises of becoming World Champion. Only Lewis kept up his end of the bargain. The thought of seeing him again makes Nico feel funny, like he wants to hide away. Nico hasn't even gone to Monaco in years.

At the British Grand Prix, Mika Hakkinen enters the McLaren garage with relative fanfare of a Formula 1 World Champion. Nico stays out of the cameras, doesn't have to field any interviews -- people generally don't know him without his dad around. The smell of the rubber and engine fuels and screams of thousands of fans, it's all reminiscent of his childhood. Nico idly thumbs the car keychain in his pocket, waiting for Mika.

"Nico? No way, is that you, man?"

OH LORDY this rewatch has been one of the wildest tv adventures we've had in a long stretch, so glad 2 be blowing thru this together.

AT THIS POINT. i'm caught up thru 3x06. so my favorites ARE:

peter. you knew this, i knew this, we all knew this. s2 was rough for him plotwise, but as a character i adore him so much. holding strong 4 him

elle bishop. she hasn't had much screentime but she really blew in to be perfect and suuuuuuch a bright spot. no matter how messy things were around her, she was delightful.

mohinder. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON WITH HIM AND HIS CRAZY BUG PLOT RN BUT I'M HOLDING STRONG FOR MY MANZ. he's had a rough go of it since season 1 but i'm praying things will sort themselves out.

hiro nakamura. s3 has been.... complicated for my hiro feelings too. but i'm still so happy to see him. he still fills me with joy. wish his sister was around for him to have a complicated relationship with alas.

mr muggles. THE BEST CHARACTER EVER. okay fine. claire. claire and I broke up in season 2 but we are back STRONG for s3. her trauma arc is hitting me deep.

HONORABLE MENTIONS! i LOOOOOOOVE monica dawson so much. she didn't get as much content as i remembered but i feel like after the whole series is over and done, in retrospect she will still be one of my top ranking characters. angela petrelli! EVIL MILF AFTER MY OWN HEART. she's allowed to be such a slow burn complex baddie and I always adore her. the most fun villain we've got in the mix. nathan petrelli! nathan is great. s3 isssssss a bit strange for him so far? but he was one of the few characters whose s2 arc really really worked for me. and he's just very entertaining to me all round. lol we'll see how my relationship with him pans out in volume 4 IF I'M REMEMBERING THINGS RIGHT. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST? tbh sandra bennett? i love her so much. love everything she's been up to in s3.

this show is definitely a mixed bag but i'm having so much fun rewatching it!!!!!!!!!

But, sometimes.

I’m pretty picky about HYDRA!Cap because it can be very triggering and I prefer a Steve who is dark but soft with Tony. This one was very well done though--I liked the way everything played out.

It makes perfect sense, of course. The serum gave Steve the perfect body, so why wouldn’t it also give him the perfect mind? In the quietness of his own mind, Tony can admit he’s a little stung Steve didn’t tell him, but he’s not really surprised.

(Or: the one where Steve is smarter than Tony, and neither of them deal well.)

I looooooove smart Steve, but I’ve never seen it handled like this, and I really liked that aspect of the story.

Suddenly Steve is married, fighting super villains, worrying what Obadiah Stane and coming home to Tony most nights of the week.

I really love Steve taking care of Tony especially when he’s clearly in love, and saying it’s for other Reasons.

-Overall opinion of them: THE BRIGHTEST STAR IN MY FUCKING LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LITERALLY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERS TO ME… I LOOOOOOOVE ray i love how much of a fucked up piece of shit he is I love how despite it he always tries to do the right thing i love how complicated and messy and ANGRY he is but now he was never punished for it because he was RIGHT to be angry! Its such a fucking CRIME how much they sanitised him and made him to be so squeaky clean and nice and BORING let him be CRAZY again!

– Gender/sexuality headcanons: Gay because he is uhm. Canonically gay LOL and also a nonbinary trans guy. Neopronouns haver I dare would argue

– Favorite moment in canon: HMMMMMMM probably just. Any moment where he just like absolutely rips Happy to shreds and beats the ever living shit out of him. Maybe the scenes too in the Chris priest solo of Ray reconciling with his mom and younger brother. That one time he was hogging a public telephone so he could hack like public records or whatever on his shitty 90s computer. His literal edgelord suicide mantra

– Favorite moment in a fanwork: Any fanart my friends have made for him 💖💖💖💖 thank you everyone

– Favorite line, in canon or otherwise: there’s a LOT of good ones but the main one coming to me is from his annual- “The reason you blew it, dad, is that you don’t get it- you don’t understand why I dig supes so much. Actually, maybe you do get it, but can’t face the truth- that maybe I need a role model- somebody to look up to… someone who stands for something… and that person couldn’t possibly be you.”

– Characters I love seeing them interact with: Ray is hard because I think he has a lot of good characters he could and has interact with but they just never capitalised on it, like, ever. I do really love his relationship with his brother Josh though- its extremely sweet and i felt it was a really good stepping stone in Ray's journey, to be able to have this dynamic with someone who he would do everything for to make sure never gets hurt. His relationship with his mom Nadine is great, too (IGNORING HOW ORLANDO WROTE IT BOOO)- awkward and tense in a realistic way, but still so much love between them. If possible, I'd really like for Ray's dynamics with Gaelon, Guy, J'onn and tbh even his boyfriend Xenos to be tweaked, because there’s a lot of really good potential in these relationships to be funny and interesting, but writers just didn’t bite that damn bullet!!!!!

– Last thing before sleeping headcanons: tbh Ray I think is someone who probably stays up all night listening to like the loudest music possible or getting hyper invested in his coding computer work before absolutely crashing in bed and sleeping for 24 hours straight

– Sleeping habits headcanons: Same answer as before I do think he has an absolutely terrible fucking sleep schedule

– First thing after waking up headcanons: I think no matter what he'll always try to like go for a fly when he wakes up to be able to soak up all the rays from the sun- kinda like a way to get him to feel rejuvenated or revitalised you know

– Favorite locations headcanon: Probably just Philadelphia in general, tbh- Ray feels like someone who takes pride in the city he's from, but I imagine he enjoys any place that just has clear skies and a lot of nice sunshine. Maybe the beach even

bc i love you and ace with jake and hope i was wondering if we do a thread or you do one with anyone that if the other character mentions hope is that okay to just assume that and have that as part of the verse

OKAY OKAY SO my ‘main’ verse ( as it’s tagged ) really just refers to the general timeline that I set Jacob in as my default ( that is, several years post BD ). There are about a million versions of this main verse depending on who I’m writing with and all, but my main main verse would be the one I’ve been writing with Ace with Hope, and that’s sort of the default frame of mind I take when I approach that timeline / setting. I don’t have many threads with other people that have involved mentions of Hope simply because it hasn’t been plotted with those other people. For instance, I wouldn’t assume when writing with a Josie that everything that stands in my main verse with Ace would stand in that verse too, because those assumptions would directly impact Josie’s background based on her own relationship with Hope. So I try not to make things more complicated for the muns I’m working with??? I’ve proposed it a couple times before with characters from TVD/TO but it just hasn’t worked out right to have them exist in the same main verse I have.

That being said ... I WOULD LOOOOOOOVE MORE WORLD BUILDING !!!! Meaning I would love to have other characters set in that same main verse with Hope and Jacob being a thing. To expand a network of specific versions of characters all interacting!! So if you EVER want to mention Ace’s Hope ( as long as they’re cool with it @tricursed ) in a thread with me, PLEASE DO. Let’s plot bigger!!!!

2017: my complicated af beaN layla. idek what’s going on with her at this point. 2020: i’m screaming i can’t believe i thought 2017 layla was complicated. i had no idea what was to come. i picked up biel not long after that. also had katalina aka brucey’s wifey n i miss her. juliana is a fairly recent addition and, i’m about to spill the beans, a glücksburg is coming.

2017: american / lots of white european and the other half o’ me is ashkenazi jewish / right now i’m back and forth between pst and mst. homeland is mst though. 2020: obvs nothing has changed except no more back and forth with timezones. strictly mst now.

2017: it’s the first day of spring and we almost reached 100 degrees F :’) we don’t really have autumn or spring here tho. it’s either hot as balls summer or frozen. no in between. like, as soon as temps get below 70 F people break out their jackets. 2020: welcome to the desert, “it’s a dry heat”

One where Danny momentarily hooks up with Steve Rogers, and then I saw a post that inspired me to have one of Steve’s SEAL buddies wanting a shot with Danny and Steve being torn between ‘oh hell no, that’s my Danno’ and ‘I’m not gay right? And neither is Danny so I can let my SEAL buddy try riiiight?’

2x08 mr ferguson is ill today- AN ACTUALLY PERFECT EPISODE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM DEF CONTENDOR FOR FAVORITE EPISODE OF THE WHOLE SERIES

2x12 alpine fields. fucking.. perfect. god i loved this episode. i can’t believe i was so ambivalent on the flashes to the future the first time i watched this bc GOD soooooo perfect. so unbelievably perfect. derek is an incredibly compelling character. JESSE IS TOO!!!!!!!!! and lauren!!!!!!!! god tho god god god. flashing between three different timelines was sooooooo fascinating and such a good way to tell the story and shake up the narrative. i LOOOOOOOVED it. jesse in particular was LUMINOUS in this episode. it’s sort of like with rileys early appearances, where their presence and their spirit is such a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the drama and sadness, but in the show jesses first appearance in the life of a member of team connor was shown AFTER her sadness and lying is revealed as a major part of her plotline. 2x17 ourselves alone- god what a phenomenal episode.. i loved it as much as i hated it. it was totally flawless. one of the best things about this show is how it lets everyone be a PERSON. a complex complicated person filled with good and bad, with different goals and plans and wants, no one being forced to cater to one purpose like an automaton lmao. Hi, I really liked your observations about Jack's arc this season, but I was just wondering what your predictions are for where they might take his relationship with Sam? I saw a lot of tension between the two, but I'm not quite sure where it's going. It just felt odd that there was so much tension after Jack's declaration of love in the finale.

(This answer ended up being way long than I expected, and some of it might just be word vomit. Sorry about that.)

Thanks for the question anon! Because it’s only the first episode of the season, and we don’t really have a full picture yet, it’s hard to say for sure if it’s actually going in the direction I think the writers are trying to take it, but I can certainly give you my interpretation of their time together in 14x01, as well as a little speculation.

There are steps we must consider: 1) Jack is bummed 2) Sam checks in on Jack 3) Jack tells him what’s wrong. 4) Sam reassures Jack. 5) Jack feels at least a little better about the situation than before. This is the formula used in most conversations where Sam and Jack are alone. It is used in at least episode 2, 3, and 4 of Season 13. (It’s possible it’s used in a few other episodes as well, I just haven’t had the time to go back and check.) Usually, in writing, if something happens three or more times, it’s considered a pattern, and eventually in order to turn the story on it’s head, a writer will break that pattern, so that that the audience can feel that something has changed. 14x01 does this pretty brilliantly. The scene in Jack’s bedroom follows steps 1,2, skips 3, moves to 4, and then is interrupted before the characters can make it to step 5. So, you’re absolutely right anon, there is tension, and that’s because everything feels familiar enough to be recognizable, but just slightly shifted to make the audience feel uncomfortable.

So, what’s different? Why did we skip step 3? Why is step 5 dismissed? Let’s take a step back.

Last season Jack had Sam’s full attention. Jack is his first priority. Sam even puts Jack’s needs above his own want to find his mother. The “even if we can’t find her, that’s okay. I still care about you,” is a big indicator of that. When Jack runs away, Sam’s first priority is to find him. When Jack gets sucked into Apocalypse World Sam’s priority is to bring Jack, and his mother (who Jack has confirmed to be alive at this point) back home. Jack is arguably Sam’s largest motivation throughout season 13. And, because of Sam’s dedication to Jack, Sam is the one he becomes the most emotionally attached to.

In the three weeks between the two seasons, Sam’s motivations have changed. And by that I don’t mean Jack is no longer a priority anymore. I mean that Sam’s motivation isn’t as simple or as cut and dry as, “I have to help Jack,” or “I have to save Jack and mom.” It’s not even as simple as “I have to save Dean.” Sam’s motivation this season is, “I have to keep this family together.” That means “I have to save Cas when he gets attacked by demons, I have to look after my new friends living in the bunker, I have to watch over the man with the same face as my abuser, who was also abused. I have to help Jack through his problems, and I have to save Dean.”

From Jack’s point of view he is overwhelmed by the loss of his powers, something that to him was like breathing. To him, it’s like losing an arm or a leg. He feels like a piece of himself is missing, and the person he would normally talk to about that kind of stuff is busy with about a dozen other things. Mary interrupting their conversation or let’s say interrupting step 5 with “He’s awake,” Feels like- and maybe this isn’t the best comparison, but it’s the strongest one I could think of- It feels like a new baby has arrived. There is a reason why they chose to connect Jack, the person Sam took care of in season thirteen directly into the scene with Sam patching up Nick. Jack has a pretty rude awakening to the fact that Sam has a lot more people in his life now, then he did when they first met. And this is probably especially isolating to Jack after he almost sacrificed himself for Sam three weeks prior. I’m not saying that Jack blames Sam for any of this. It’s still a little ambiguous as to whether or not he does, but they also skip step 3, and Jack who has never really been passive with his feelings before, decides to say, “It was fine.” It seems as though he probably doesn’t want to bother Sam with the gory details. It’s why he says, “I know,” when Sam has to leave the room. He knows Sam has other responsibilities. Jack probably does’t blame Sam for not being around, he just wants to be useful, and he doesn’t think he can be useful to Sam unless he has his powers. And that’s pretty freaking tragic.

This isn’t to say that I think Sam is being a terrible father figure here. He still makes time for Jack despite all the craziness surrounding him. He doesn’t push Jack to tell him what’s wrong, but he he reassures him anyway. He supports Jack in going on the hunt. When Sam says “He needs this,” it’s not just about Jack needing to feel useful, but I also think it’s about Sam knowing Jack needs to learn and understand his limits now that he’s human.

What I assume is going to be there arc this season is that that none of this seems to stop Sam from feeling guilty, because he knows what he’s giving Jack is not enough, and Jack know’s it too. But, from an outsider’s perspective, it’s pretty clear Sam is doing the best he can. The thing they both need to remember, through all of the chaos that seems to be surrounding them, is that they are not alone. They have Cas, they have have Marry, they even have an AU!Bobby. Hell, they even have an entire army of hunters loyal to them now.

“We’ll talk later.” They don’t. And that seems to be the conceit of their relationship this season. That “I love you,” that “I don’t care. He’s family,” at the end of the last season, just muddied the waters. Their relationship is no longer pure. And I looooooove that. Because now they get to be complicated, and messy, and real, just like any other Father/Son relationship.

Having them be sweet, and supportive in their first season was a great set up, but it isn’t enough to keep their arc interesting for more than a season or so. But this? This has potential.

I want to see them argue. I want to see Jack break Sam’s heart. I want to see them make up and grow as individuals because of their bond with each other. Give me all of it! I want to see all the sides to this beautiful relationship.

I’ll say it again, I don’t know if this is the course their going to take it, (Chuck, knows how many times the writers have swerved off the road), but I certainly hope it is, because it would be glorious to see.

I don’t know how well I conveyed my thoughts here. Anybody else have thoughts on this?

page 105 – 111

I wanted to address that Rae can’t follow through on her lies. She is sneaking out mostly so she can stall and then figure out something to say that is true but misleading. I also had Morgan be the one that sorta connects with Rae because since she never trusted Rae she would be the least hurt by Rae’s true nature coming out.

Also Rae’s mom trying to call her is supposed to be one last dig at Morgan’s lack of support system. Also much like earlier when Elsie didn’t react to yelling, I figure Morgan’s comment that no one smiles as much as Rae reveals more about her than she thinks. And Rae mentioning how closed off Morgan is kinda a hint of want happens in the next seen.

page 112 – 121

Morgan’s been guarded this whole book and when this is when she is pushed the most to talk about herself. Her emotions are all damned up and her getting pushed like has them all burst out at once. Her and Elsie coming to blows is because Elsie is the one who has the least reason to leave and also the one who would want Morgan to stay the most. I also had Billy be unconscious for all this because I did want even a hint of Morgan staying for looooooove.

This is also the only time Morgan cries in the book because she opened up for once. I wanted this conversation to have space to breath and scattered some silent panels through out it. Her shouting and being exposed like that isn’t the norm for her so everyone is not quite sure how to respond.

page 122 – 124

I wanted Morgan to think over her decision to leave and be alone for awhile. Times like this are why I decided to have the thought captions from each character.

page 125 – 128

This scene I wanted to show that Morgan’s dad isn’t bad all the time and sorta tries. But he has his own serious depression we aren’t seeing since it’s not his story. He can barely manage to take care of himself never mind a teenager. It’s kinda how their attempts to connect never meet up or happen at the same time. I thought it would be too easy to just paint him entirely with a bad brush. I wanted their relationship to be more complicated than that. There last scene together I wanted to end on a sad note that makes it clear why she still left.

Page 129 – 134

This whole ritual’s and the comments the girls have on it are just pulling at details that work in a medieval looking setting but in modern times are more questionable, specially Rae mentioning not wanting to catch anything from sharing a knife they all cut themselves with. I like Rae flinching as Elsie takes the knife.

The spell is in Gaelic/Irish. I’m fairly certain there are some serious errors in it cause I used google translate. All the spells in Misfits of Avalon are in Irish but most are translate to things like Fire Blade so grammar isn’t super key. This is the longest bit I had to figure out.

I liked the magic words wrapping around the girls as Cu says them. It’s more visually interesting that way I think. I always try to find ways to do something more interesting with lettering that doesn’t get in the way of the storytelling. I hand letter so I want to take full advantage of that.

page 135 – 137

This bit with Billy I tried to pull panel layouts similar to other conversations Billy and Morgan had and combine them with panels from Morgan’s dream. Because it is wanted people to subconsciously think of both those moments.

page 138 – 144

This is the fight that is the most urgent fight they have. I wanted each role they play to reflect their role in the whole the comic. So like Morgan and Elsie take the more brute force side and are the most focused on Billy. Kimber figures out what is going on. And Rae stays safe and seperate from the rest of them. I was in a bit of a deadline crunch during this. I kinda wish I could’ve maybe pushed the action a little more.

page 145 – 149

We get a little bit of a wrap up on their thoughts on the rings. Rae’s refusing to help is a bit of she has already been found out so she doesn’t feel the need to keep up pretense. Her actions are being more honest like her words. I also wanted to focus the most on Morgan when they take off their rings because she was the one who didn’t want the ring. I wanted to give her a calm relief moment. And then the other end is how petty Rae is about returning the ring.

page 150 – 158

I wanted to have a calmer moment while they watch the tree burn before starting their goodbyes. This scene maybe would have worked better in color. Morgan leaving is because in the whole story she doesn’t have a lot of power. Yes she gets superpowers but most of the things that make her life rough are things she doesn’t have control over. She can’t fix her dad’s alcoholism and depression. She can’t somehow make her absentee mom come back. She can’t fix her and her dad’s finical problems. She is in a place in her life where she is old enough to be aware of her circumstance but not old enough to take control of it in anyway. It’s an experience that is very connected to being a teenager in my mind and it is very frustrating. So Morgan getting the choice to leave society is her getting some control she has never had before. And it’s a type of control she wouldn’t be able to get until she legally an adult.

Kimber’s good-bye to Morgan is still focused on sorta the fantasy of things. I wanted to show that is where her mind is and always ha been. Only when Billy might die does she not treat the story she is in like a story. Then Rae’s good-bye is short and kinda hostile because both parties don’t care about each other. It’s also a more honest interaction Rae has had in most of the book.

Morgan and Billy’s good-bye I started close because it’s more intimate and then pull out when Billy starts to put emotional distance between them with a joke. I ended with them in a background and border free panel because their goodbye for a moment feels like it is just them.

Elsie’s anger and denial about Morgan leaving is reflecting their whole relationship. When ever Elsie lashes out at Morgan it’s when Morgan puts up a barrier to their friendship. Her leaving is the last big wall. But that hostility falls apart when she sees Morgan is really leaving. Then she has the biggest goodbye and the most emotional. After the hug there aren’t any other people in the panels. Like with her goodbye to Billy, this needs to be the just them. And for a similar reason it ends with the background and borderless panel.

The last page is to just end on a big of a goofy note to cut the tension a bit. I wanted to linger on Elsie’s feelings.

Anyway, thats a wrap for Misfits of Avalon. It was my first book working with a publisher and I think I learned a lot while making it. I think if I were to redo it, I think I would have done more planning. It very quickly went from a vague idea aka magical girls that were jerks to the finished project. There are a few bits I think I could have pushed more and made clearer. I do like this length more than Sorcery 101’s length. It was easier to manage but still felt substantial to me. With that in mind I think maybe I should have written the whole thing at once, cause like Kimber isn’t as clearly younger than everyone else in the beginning. The point was to make some “unlikable” female characters in the same way male characters get to be unlikable. That makes it not for everyone and I could have maybe tightened it in a few parts. I’m gonna take what I learned to the next project I’m doing.

((An interesting ship indeed but I personally don’t see it developing to a romantic/love interest level because it lacks certain things to it for me that would make it shippable in my eyes and the fact that Croatia will always have trouble developing and accepting any kind of romantic interest in a girl.

Buuuut under the chance that they could be a couple I see them in a kind of relationship like Chloe and Max from Life is Strange (which I btw looooooove) kind of complicated and with Tamara pushing her away a bit and in general being a bit...too much I guess. And also an instagram couple, they’d post pictures all over their instagrams send more I’m having fun
