Calm Herbal Tea
Tumblr media
Sometimes, especially on a Friday, after a long and busy week, you need a moment to relax, to ease the tension out of your muscles and to have a little peace and quiet. A cocktail would be just fine, but if it happens to be a rainy day, this fragrant and floral Calm Herbal Tea works wonders, too!
Ingredients (makes 1/3 cup):
about 2 dozens dried cowslip flowers (primula veris)*
about 2 1/2 dozens dried jasmine flowers (trachelospermum jasminoides)**
a teaspoon Dried Lavender
*when foraging Cowslip flowers in the Spring, rinse them under cold water, and let them dry on a plain sheet of paper, a couple of weeks; when completely dried, store in an airtight jar
**Pick fresh jasmine when in full bloom in the Summer. You can make lovely bouquets with it, too. Once it start withering, remove the flowers from the stems and space them on a small tray or a plain sheet of paper. Allow to dry in a draught-free room, with indirect sunlight, a couple of weeks; then store in an airtight jar.
In a small bowl, combine, dried Cowslip flowers, dried jasmine flowers and Dried Lavender. Stir well to mix.
You can either store your Sweet Dreams Herbal Tea into a metal tea box or sealed (sterelised) glass jar, or wrap a heaped half-teaspoon of the blend into a muslin square, and tie with cotton thread to make individual tea bags (you should get about five).
Infuse Calm Herbal Tea, 6 to 8 minutes in hot water.

I just made a tea out of mugwort, damiana, mullein leaf, and blue cornflower.
It is super yummy.
No honey, sugar, or anything.
Just plain tea.
Let's see if any Astral projection works, or any vivid lucid dreaming happens.
I love collecting all these herbs.

When Steve was younger, he often got sick. Poor constitution, his father would scoff, definitely from his mother's side.
His father never agreed to take him to see any kind of medicinal practitioner, didn't want Steve's health to be a blot on the Harrington reputation. His mother often disagreed, but there was nothing she could do.
Or rather, almost nothing she could do.
Steve doesn't remember much of the details now, but he knows that his mother's herb garden started solely so that she could help soothe him when he was sickly. He remembers homemade tea blends and salves, and big books on flowers with pretty illustrations.
The herb garden is nothing to look at now, but the books are still in her room.
Since he bought the tarot deck, he has remembered these herbal remedies more. Has been thinking of them more. His hearing and vision on the left side fail him some days, and it's been easier to pretend like it's nothing than trying to come up with a convincing lie at the hospital.
Instead of risking breaking the terms of the NDA, maybe there's something in his mother's books that could help him.

my pitiful sirius & harry contribution for the day.
some nebulous universe where harry lives with sirius. they’re getting used to each other, not pushing boundaries too much, all that fun stuff. it’s all quite…normal.
until harry gets sick. he’s miserable—wrapped in blankets with a raging fever and a dual sniffly/blocked nose situation and a bad case of The Shivers. he’s also hyper-independent and refuses to call attention to himself or ask for help bc that’s what he’s used to with the dursleys. the most he’d get for his troubles was a dirty rag and half a tylenol so he could get back to his chores. certainly no pampering or days off or TLC.
enter sirius black, who until this very moment would’ve sworn on all things holy that he didn’t have one maternal bone in his body. he was a bit too indifferent and he knows it. but he takes one look at his red nosed, pathetically hunched over godson and it’s like the ghost of james potter takes control of him from beyond the afterlife because suddenly he’s whipping up homemade chicken noodle soup (with mrs. p’s special spice blend), herbal tea, and tucking harry into his bed with far more blankets than necessary because what if 23 wasn’t enough?!
remus drops by for a visit because he hasn’t heard from either of them in a couple days and he’s just the teeny tiniest bit worried and he opens the door to the house in a fucking State. like, pillows are strewn haphazardly, there’s a couple cobwebs in the corner, and dishes are piled up in the sink. it’s the absolute opposite of how sirius black operates and for a minute, he thinks he’s either entered some other poor sod’s house or sirius had been confunded. there was no other explanation.
thats what he thinks, right up until he walks into harry’s room, wand clenched tightly in hand in case there is something wrong, and gets the answer.
harry is sleeping in the bed, only the top of his face & nose visible amongst the mound of blankets and pillows, light snores escaping his half-open mouth. there’s a little wastebasket of used tissues on the side table along with a number of half-empty vials. on his other side, sirius is sitting on a chair in a position that’s terrible for his back & will definitely kick him in the ass come morning, half sprawled over the covers. he has one hand resting on harry’s head, fingers absently moving in rhythmic patterns, and the other bent under his head as a makeshift pillow. upon closer inspection, his hair is greasy & there’s dark bruises under his eyes & remus is, quite frankly, amazed at the state he’s in. if only the fangirls & boys of hogwarts could see him now. what a babe.
he thinks about waking him up, but thinks it would be a monumentally stupid idea. this is probably the only time either of them r getting sleep in the past few days. so he carefully loosens some of the covers wrapped around harry so he doesn’t suffocate, minutely adjusts sirius so he doesn’t wake up w a thrown out back, and vanishes the germ-ridden tissues. finally, he cleans up the house a little so sirius can focus on his godson and only his godson.
‘don’t say i’ve never done anything for you’ he writes on a piece of paper and sticks it to sirius’ forehead before leaving.

FAFO Friday
The Fucking Around Experimented with lemonbalm, because it grows in my garden with great abundance and while it makes a pleasant tea, it's really not my favorite tea herb either solo or in blends, so I don't end up using it very much. Sometimes a bit as a salad accent flavor, but the leaves are kinda stiff and hairy so it's not the optimal mouthfeel. Decided to try cooking it to see what happens, since some other mint-family herbs (eg bee balm, nettle) make decent cooked greens.
Risk assessment: worst-case likely scenario is putting something of unpleasant taste and/or texture in my mouth, which I'm allowed to spit out if I hate it.
The Finding Out Turns out lemonbalm does not make a very pleasant steamed green. Tastes fine, but the stiffness of the leaves doesn't go away with cooking so the texture's moderately bad. Would eat again if very hungry and lacking in other options, but can't recommend otherwise. I doubt that sauteeing would produce better results, and although it would probably be fine if chopped up small before mixing into an omelette that's more work than it's worth when other greens that cook down better are plentiful.
HOWEVER, if simmered for a while it produces a truly delightful broth, which I like better than the results of treating it as a herbal tea just for drinking straight, and which would make an excellent base for a nice rich soup. Can definitely see making use of more of the lemonbalm abundance to add depth of flavor to homemade soup stocks of many kinds.

Holograms, I had a rough sudden chronic bronchitis flare the past week. At first it was my usual winter lung bullshit, just icky feeling. But I pushed myself too hard and it suddenly got worse and seemed like I was going to be really sick like I always was in childhood. I can’t do inhalers anymore, my body doesn’t tolerate them at all. I attribute it not progressing and reversing in a few days to not just my nebulizer 2x daily, strong homemade herbal tea blends, sea moss gel, overdosing on 3 different kinds of garlic a day, but my ✨wedge pillow✨. Bad lungs who?! For real. Usually sleeping this time of year feels like I’m drowning. Wedge pillow changes everything. I can breathe! 😭

🍑🍊🍋 for Jenna and Jestiny?
thank you for sending, sorry these took a while to get around to doing!
Tumblr media
🍑 Where is your OC’s favourite place to relax or calm down? Recount a story of their time spent in this place! What makes it so special to them? Is there anywhere your OC hates to go to? Anywhere that stresses them out or have negative memories of?
one of her favorite places in larger range is the playground outside hope county high school — she used to work out of the chemistry lab there in the early days when they were still trying to get a good bliss formula off the ground, and she and faith had their first real date there (a picnic on the grass followed by stargazing). revisiting it both reminds her of one of her fondest memories of her relationship with faith and of how far she’s come as a researcher, so it’s always a go to visiting spot when she needs a mood boost. since its slightly outside the accessible territory post reaping, her favorite happy places following joseph’s arrest are the greenhouse at jessop conservatory (technically still a work location, but her favorite one) and the garden outside her own home, where she has a small lounging area she likes to read or birdwatch.
outside of the county, her least favorite place would be the pharmaceutical research lab she used to work at back in california. within, there’s no place that particularly stresses her out, but she doesn’t really look forward to the rare occasions she has to visit the veteran’s center.
🍊 What is your OC’s favourite meal? Snack? Dessert? Drink? Any reasons behind this besides liking how it tastes? What is your OC’s most hated food? Stuff they can’t stand to eat or drink?
as far as full meals, her favorite would probably be her go to breakfast — omelet with vegetables from her garden, fresh fruit with sugar sprinkled on top, lightly buttered croissant, and hot tea with lots of honey. for snack, it would be one of her own homemade pastries, the sweeter the better — she has a definite sweet tooth. which is why dessert is hardest to pick and where she likes to get the most experimental with her meals. (gastronomy is something of a side passion.) if she could only pick one thing to eat for the rest of her life though, cherry danish. favorite drink is herbal teas, exact blend varies. chardonnay if she’s drinking alcohol, although she’s also not above a shitty fruit wine if she’s in deep enough.
there aren’t any foods jenna especially hates, although she’s not big on most seafood or anything with too much cheese. she also doesn’t particularly like coffee, she was big on it in her undergrad days but it somewhat wore out its welcome.
🍋 Does your OC act petty and jealous easily? What sort of things make them feel like this and do they experience guilt for getting so worked up? How do they deal with these emotions when they get them? If your OC doesn’t feel like this often, why not?
not at all, if anything jenna’s most toxic trait is being unhealthily detached from her own emotions, so pettiness and jealousy aren’t really in her nature, she doesn’t allow herself to feel them even in healthy, normal amounts. she definitely isn’t jealous of things like romantic rivals, attention, status, or accomplishments. the closest she comes is occasionally being possessive about her research. not really in an egotistical, accolade seeking way, more than she can be somewhat of an uptight control freak about the actual process itself.
Tumblr media
🍑 Where is your OC’s favourite place to relax or calm down? Recount a story of their time spent in this place! What makes it so special to them? Is there anywhere your OC hates to go to? Anywhere that stresses them out or have negative memories of?
daniel’s gravesite ig rip to him :/ that little waterfall area near orville creek she loves it there. outside of that, there aren’t that many specific locations she’s gotten attached to, since pre reaping she moved around fairly often and prefers variety and new experiences over routine. but in general she always has liked retreating to the outdoors when she’s stressed, running away and hiding in the woods was a favorite coping mechanism as a child and she’s maintained it. she particularly enjoys the mountains, and will usually make it a goal to find a few good lesser used hiking trails when she moves to a new place.
as for disliked locations, returning home is definitely a stressful experience for her, between traumatic memories and being emotionally unequipped to witness her mother’s declining health. within county, she… eventually feels very ill at ease anywhere in the henbane that isn’t the safe haven of the jail, and sometimes still there.
🍊 What is your OC’s favourite meal? Snack? Dessert? Drink? Any reasons behind this besides liking how it tastes? What is your OC’s most hated food? Stuff they can’t stand to eat or drink?
most of jessie’s meals are the same as her favorite snack — granola and protein bars, often with an energy drink. if she actually cooks for herself, anything in the starchy comfort food family usually goes — cornbread, grilled cheese, cornmeal pancakes, fried tomatoes. when she makes a full, proper meal, her faves are usually fried fish she caught herself and vegetable stew or chicken and dumplings. her favorite dessert is buttermilk pie. favorite drink is dirt IPAs or bourbon, or the aforementioned energy drinks.
for dislikes she’s not super picky and will try anything once and then again just to make sure she really does hate it, but she does have a particular aversion to meatloaf — during her childhood her mother cooking it was usually a sign her parents hadn’t had a lot of money for food that week, and she was about to eat the worst tasteless filler mystery meat of her life. (time in whitetails doesn’t help the aversion to mystery meat.)
🍋 Does your OC act petty and jealous easily? What sort of things make them feel like this and do they experience guilt for getting so worked up? How do they deal with these emotions when they get them? If your OC doesn’t feel like this often, why not?
petty absolutely, core character trait. childish and immature to a fault. jealous less so, and not always in obvious ways, but she’s certainly not immune. she has a palpable lingering bitterness and resentment towards anyone who grew up with more financial opportunity than her. and as for relationships, while she doesn’t really get jealous over romantic or sexual rivals, she can be very jealous and bitter about not being given attention or prioritized, and will quickly detach from a relationship if she perceives it occurring (accurately or not).
