It’s wild how shipping culture has changed so drastically over time on the internet.

In the old days people shipped characters who either had only one line of dialogue with each other, never even met, or not even from the same piece of media. It was the wild west and sure some ships were uncomfortable but people had the mindset to just block the tag and stay away from ships they didn’t enjoy.

Nowadays? It’s more like people have to clarify that their ship isn’t canon compliant, character adjacent, and story irrelevant otherwise they get a flood of comments saying “but this character isn’t like this in canon” and some people legitimately get angry if you’re not following the canon.

Like- shipping and fandom culture from what I understand it is about engaging with media in a way that caters to you. And if you don’t like a ship or show just… block the relevant tags and don’t engage in the ships? The internet isn’t supposed to cater to us- we have to cater ourselves to our internet environment. And no matter how many times people may harass others over a fandom or ship they don’t like, those ships are not gonna disappear.

The internet has just been getting worse when people have decided to place morality in their opinions by saying things like “if you enjoy the ship then you support (insert horrible thing here that’s usually completely unrelated to the ship itself)” when it used to be “eh, not my thing” and people just moved on.

And for the record this isn’t about a specific ship or anything- just an observation of how fandom has evolved (and regressed) over the years and I find it fascinating from a sociological perspective cause we still don’t know how having the internet from birth affects the development of kids and how that affects how they interact with others- isn’t that scary?

I know that’s slightly unrelated but the way people engage in media has been changing over they years and that also involves fandom and the maturity level thereof in the internet space and someone smarter than me could probably write a whole thesis paper about fandom culture and how the internet has hindered the social development of people and how that affects community specifically from a fandom lens.

Just- for your sanity younger internet children: it’s not worth harassing others over something as trivial as ‘it’s not canon that this character kisses another character.’ Just find ships you like. Block ships you don’t. And just enjoy your time doing what you like!

You can’t control the internet but you can nurture your little corner of it.

talked w/ a friend about this and wanted to post something similar yesterday after a convo i saw also

about people criticizing ttcc / ttcc fans for just... being cog fans? being cog centric? usually coming from people who only like the toons.

and everyone likes what they like! it's okay! but saying that people who like the cogs are horrible and support the bad things they do, is just blatantly wrong. i thought we knew that enjoying villainous and morally Bad / grey characters is... okay? it doesn't mean you support what they do. it's interesting to explore these topics.

i've seen many people just... paint anyone who likes the cogs as horrible because they're "apologists of x and y" and... i dunno. rubs me the wrong way! you do have a point and recognize the cogs do bad things, but liking them as characters means nothing about who you are as a person.

and this is not to say that people who are in toontown for the toons are bad. hell! they are right this IS toontown. i may be on the cog liker side but i like the toons! maybe ocs more than the npcs - mostly because i like my friends and the sheer creativity the toons can bring out!!

SO what i wanna say... i dunno. let's not point fingers...? let's have fun in a goofy cartoon game together??? also complaining about people liking VILLAIN ROBOTS on TUMBLR is kind of funny to me. do you realize where you are. but then again a lot of this i see on discord and in-game as well since i avoid things on tumblr... i am a sensitive little fella i avoid misty fight bc of One Really mean "Critic" guy i saw there and i have been shivering in my bootsies since. so you get me

but like yes ttcc is more cog centric but... that's okay? things could be written better and i still wanna speak on it, and i do thing the toons deserve attention and better writing... but the fact it focuses on the cogs isn't... bad? if you don't like how con centric it is you can go play ttr...? god forbid people have fun and explore the villain's side of things...? i'm not saying either toontown server is better or worse than the other... and everyone can like their own things!!

Daily November crying sessions start today

You have to think things will get better, otherwise what is the point!!! You have to hold out hope that things will get better and then maybe one day things will feel safe and be cool and everything will be fine (at least as fine as it can be)

thinking about how this is a year in which all of my friends got into relationships, and a few of them became roommates, and some immigrated and how odd it all feels to be the one who has essentially done nothing

#met up with my immigrated friends a few days ago because they came home for christmas and god did I feel like such a child #what do I have to input ever when theyre talking about marriage or considering buying a second house or possibly having a baby #or traveling the world with their partner or their newest job promotions #and god do I love my friends but damn does it ever feel isolating when a number of them live together and see each other everyday #when Im alone and so far away and logically I know comparing it like this is pointless and makes no sense it still feels shit #cant even think about immigrating because of health care waiting lists im on that req me in the country #happy shitty new yr might get drunk and lie on my floor and consider giving myself a haircut or something i dont even know

I’ve got two new posts on my site for the occasion:

As part of New Zealand Comedy Month, the first is a playlist of influences on Flight of the Conchords’ songs. I’ve also incorporated Bo Burnham’s tunes that were obviously similar to those by his musical comedy idols, such as 3.14 Apple Pi and High School Party

It’s a fun read, AND there’s a corresponding Amazon Music playlist that I’ve curated for you all (my name is “Jessica Lee” on Amazon because that was a pseudonym I came up with in the nineties when my parents were scared about using real names online haha)

The second item is a look at Bo’s performance of Make Happy in Philadelphia in 2015. For this piece, I recently interviewed Keswick Theatre audience member SnowyOwl about his experience seeing Bo live and what he thought of Bo’s subsequent works.

SnowyOwl and I actually have a few connections that I learned about during the interview: Aside from living in Pennsylvania, we both attended the Inside screening at the Ritz on July 22nd (albeit at different times) AND we were lucky enough to see the Kiwi duo in 2016 at the Mann Center! Small world haha

I hope you all have a mindful day today, and remember to reach out to people who might be struggling with their mental health. When you’re in the darkness of severe depression and suicidal thoughts like I was on July 25th, it becomes almost impossible to see the light, but it DOES get better—

Me when I’m not anxious at all about anything especially not traveling or not being home or being around strangers or going to a new airport or not being in control of the schedule or not having immediate access to my safe foods or not seeing funk and I’m definitely not anxious about being in new places and meeting new people and animals and having to be a person while trying to balance my emotions out enough that I don’t bring every conversation down while simultaneously only thinking about saying the wrong thing and bringing the conversation down

It's been 4 days since it ended now but i'm still emotional about saturday night takeaway ending and I just can't get over it yet... and one thing that I can't stop thinking about is how every time they started the show they always welcomed us by saying welcome to YOUR saturday night takeaway even tho their names are literally in the show's title. And honestly the show really was a massive comfort for me at times. There were countless times I'd had a shitty day/week and just watching it on a saturday night lifted my mood so much and made me forget about my problems for 90 minutes. It was just something always guaranteed to put a smile on my face and make me laugh no matter how bad things were. So I'm just a bit heart broken that I may never get that feeling again when i need it 😔💔

#also i remeber reading a comment about it on social media one day #and it said the show is literally just two best friends having fun and sharing it with us #and honestly i think that's the perfect way to describe the show #and i loved when the boys said it's the kind of show they enjoyed watching growing up #cause they are literally just doing their best to entertain and make us all happy #which is why i can feel a little selfish for wanting them to continue the show when they clearly need the break #and then that also reminds of the time ant went through his personal problems #a lot of people weren't very sympathetic towards him and yes he made a big mistake #but i was always supportive because i believe in 2nd chances #and especially when it involves mental health which is something i've always struggled with most of my life #so i saw it as a way to return the favour for the all the times ant (and dec of course) have made the world a little brighter for me #anyway i'm going on a lot here #but i need to say all this to express just how much i love them and to process the fact that a show #that has given me so much joy could be over forever #ant and dec #saturday night takeaway
