I can definitively say that I have never read a book like this one.
Case Study is about a young woman who believes her sister was driven to suicide by her psychiatrist and is on a mission to prove it, this premise alone was enough for me to grab myself a copy of this book, but it’s the way it is written that really makes this one stand out.
It starts with a preface from the author explaining how the book came to be. Burnet was sent a series of notebooks from the mysterious Mr Grey which contained a story that Mr Grey believed would be of interest to the author.
Neither Mr Grey nor Burnet were able to verify the credibility of the story within these notebooks, so you enter into this journey knowing you will have to make up your own mind on whether what you are reading is fact or fiction (of course google is a great help in this endeavor but I recommend reading the book and trying to figure it out for yourself first, it’s worth it).
The book is split into sections denoting the 5 notebooks as well as biographical sections on the life of Braithwaite which creates a complex and compelling impression of the man himself.
This book left me with more questions than it did answers, but in the best way possible.

If I learned anything it was that no matter how much material comfort you throw at a human being, we will always find something to be miserable about. We are programmed for dissatisfaction. We always want more.

Case Study by Graeme Macrae Burnet: Book Review
Graeme Macrae Burnet rose to prominence with his Booker Shortlisted, His Bloody Project – a genuinely original historical crime novel, of sorts, that was transfixing from start to finish. He’s followed it up with this Longlisted Booker contender. Again you could say it’s a crime novel of a sort in which no real crime takes place, but may have been autosuggested by the psychiatrist who plays one…

Case Study' by Graeme Macrae Burnet – On the Psychiatric Couch
‘Case Study’ by Graeme Macrae Burnet   (2022) – 271 pages   The decade of the 1960s saw many of the old established ideas of mental illness and psychiatry being challenged by younger professionals in these fields. At that time there were still large facilities called insane asylums for the severely mentally ill. Electroshock therapy, insulin shock, and lobotomy were still routine “treatments”…

Book Review - The Accident on the A35 by Graeme Macrae Burnet
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Between the publication of Graeme Macrae Burnet’s first Georges Gorski novel and the second, he had become a Booker-shortlisted author. The Disappearance of Adèle Bedeau didn’t get a great deal of attention when it was published. I’m not saying that the second book got loads but it certainly benefited from being the writer’s follow-up to His Bloody Project. I first read…

Hello! Are there any books you read this year that you thought you wouldn't like it but you ended up liking it? :)
oooo this is such a good question!! i’m a little late in answering it considering it’s already 2024 but i actually have a couple of books that i thought i wouldn’t like and then really enjoyed!
the first one is His Bloody Project, by Graeme Macrae Burnet. i had to read it for one of my modules at university, and i wasn’t expecting to like it since i’m not super into thriller/mystery, but i ended up loving it! it plays between the boundaries of what defines fiction and non-fiction in a really immersive way. it basically reads like a true-crime, but is in fact complete fiction. i would definitely recommend it!
another one is In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. this book is AMAZING. it’s a memoir about an abusive same-sex relationship. i honestly don’t know how to describe it further without just telling you to go and buy it, but look up the tws before doing so as it covers some dark themes

“Women don’t want to be ‘treated’ as equals; they are equals; in fact, they’re our betters in many ways. They deserve to be treated with the same honesty as men. If you want an ice cream, don’t ask for a banana. If you want to fuck someone, why ask them to a poetry reading?”

Currently reading: 'Acts of Service' by Lillian Fishman 'Revolting Prostitutes' by Molly Smith and Juno Mac 'Case Study' by Graeme Macrae Burnet 'Penge & Bacon' by Anna Juul
Current progress update: • Acts of Service - at around 50% done and not sure how I feel. • Revolting Prostitutes - so far this current book club read is great. • Case Study - I just started this and I already can't put it down! • Penge & Bacon - I love this even if I'm reading it at a snail's pace.
I'm a mostly physical book reader (nothing truly beats it!) and I mostly have a fiction and a non-fiction book on the go at any one time.
I've recently been getting back into ebooks again because it's sometimes a little more convenient and with the change of the seasons, it can sometimes feel nice to change up the format I'm reading in. If I fall in love with the book, I always buy the physical book anyway, sooo I'm never missing out!
Finally, I've usually got a Danish book ongoing too, even if I am a little slow compared to my English reads. So, my stack of 'currently reading' is usually 4 books at a time (or thereabouts).

Three ships: gentlebeard, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson as in the acd era, and jonmartin
Currently reading: His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet
Most recent movie I watched: I don't think I've watched a movie since I watched Matilda the Musical?? I've been wanting to rewatch the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films again but I haven't had time
Craving: the motivation to prepare for the weekend tutoring I'm back to doing tomorrow (but it's so hot in Melbourne right now i don't wannaaaaaa)
