‘Three Summers’ (‘Três Verões’): Film Review | TIFF 2019
Regina Casé ('The Second Mother') stars in writer-director Sandra Kogut’s new social dramedy 'Three Summers,' which premiered in Toronto.

COURTESY OF TIFF
A chaotic class dramedy where the help and the helped wind up switching places, Three Summers (Três Verões) marks another occasion for Brazilian actress Regina Casé (The Second Mother) to shine in the role of a housekeeper trying to overcome stiff social barriers and find her own slice of happiness. Set in one location over a trio of Christmas holidays (which, in Brazil, take place during the summer), this cleverly written and staged, if sometimes unruly, new feature from writer-director Sandra Kogut (Campo Grande) could see wider exposure after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Plunging us straight into the action in December of 2015, Kogut introduces us to Madelena, aka Madá (Casé), the maid-in-charge of a sprawling vacation condo belonging to a rich Rio family who settles down there each holiday. Although the long-married couple of Edgar (Otávio Müller) and Marta (Gisele Fróes) own the place, Madá seems to be the real boss, directing the other servants and taking care of Edgar’s father, Lira (Rogério Fróes), who stays in one of the guest rooms.
With Ivo Lopus Araújo’s handheld camera frenetically following Madá as she oversees the family’s Christmas party, we watch the housekeeper boisterously deal with a number of near-disasters while also trying to purchase a tract of land so she can set up her own roadside concession stand. Played infectiously by Casé, Madá is at once quick-lipped, stubborn and eager to please, making the best out of a situation that has her cleaning up everyone’s mess, yet doing it with a sly smile.
Cut to one year later. Rain has ruined the holidays, but that’s not the only thing gone wrong: Edgar and Marta have disappeared, and a little while later the police show up with a warrant to search the house. As it turns out, Madá’s boss has been fingered in a corruption investigation — part of the wide-reaching Operation Car Wash that took Brazil by storm starting in 2014, resulting in billions in seized property and hundreds of arrests, including that of former President Lula de Silva.
And yet again, Madá won’t let this latest catastrophe stop her from getting ahead. She may be without a job or salary, and her boss may be in jail, but she’ll somehow make it work. Soon enough, she and the other servants are popping open champagne, partying by the pool and trying to sell off the owners’ belongings in a yard sale. And Madá won’t even stop at that, eventually turning part of the condo into an Airbnb.
Kogut, who co-wrote the script with Iana Cossoy, displays a keen eye for satirizing Brazil’s rigid class structures and how people like Madá try to find their own piece of the pie within them. Indeed, not only does the housekeeper have a good time with her fellow servants — the behind-the-scenes jocularity is reminiscent of Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game — but she has no qualms asking her bosses to fund her new business venture. And when the latter get caught up in the scandal, she turns that to her advantage as well, using their yacht to offer sightseeing tours of confiscated homes.
The film is cleverly structured, asking the viewer to fill in the wide gaps between each narrative ellipsis, as if we’re watching a TV series where half the episodes have been cut out. Sometimes that can be confusing, such as in the third part (set in 2017), which begins with an infomercial shoot taking place in the house and goes on for a little too long. But even that sequence eventually finds meaning when Madá appears before the camera and we dig deep into her past, revealing a dark side behind her cheery façade.
Casé was a famous television star in Brazil before breaking out internationally with Anna Muylaert’s 2015 drama The Second Mother, in which she played a housekeeper trying to reconnect with her estranged daughter. In Three Summers, her performance is much more unhinged, as if Madá were a stand-up comic stuck in the role of a domestic manager, obliged to deal with the Christmas tree decorations and caterers. But looks can be deceiving: Madá may be a servant, but she’s ultimately the one being served.

May December (dir. Todd Haynes) x WFF 2023.
There's a deeply sincere quality to the dryly comical knowingness of May December's detached psychological humour. Scripted by screenwriter Samy Burch, the self-conscious film revels in its cattiness. It's often truly uncomfortable how the various characters toy and play with each other's emotions as Brazillian composer Marcelo Zarvos' delightfully overwrought musical score dials up the sense of high tension. It's an intoxicating ride questioning emotionally predatory behaviour at every turn.

Gloria and Phoebe!
i missed goblin week this year due to Situations but every week is goblin week so whatever.
Gloria, Dame of Daylight, is the titular host of of the spooky late day show Beam Dreams, which has a huge cult following among non-human and mostly nocturnal horror fans. she started the show 20 years ago after growing bored of playing the same role over and over in human-led productions and posing for monster girl pin-up gigs. she used the money from her former jobs to buy equipment, hire some buddies, and start her own campy public access show highlighting a few of her favorite monster-led indie horror films. these days she's going grey (well, greyer) and gravity is Happening which make her already racy costumes more of a gamble, but the show still holds the ghoulish charm that made it a success.
Gloria leans more comedienne than dark and broody despite the media she platforms and she always has a witty observation or subtle joke at the ready. she also has a soft spot for physical comedy and will casually pull an item out of her hair or cleavage unprompted. she doesn't critique any of the work that makes it onto the show unless specifically asked to, but those segments are always fan favorites since they're always equal parts sincere, insightful, and cheeky. she's a real Character.
Phoebe has much more humble origins. as a mostly mellow music nerd, she currently owns the record shop across from the Beam Dreams studio and lends her expertise to help with segments spotlighting up and coming musicians who fit the vibe of the show. she's found a lot of weird little bands for Gloria, and the current program wouldn't be the same without her.
even though she makes an effort to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible, it's common knowledge that she's one of Gloria's close friends, which is good for business and also very annoying sometimes. over the years she's had to train herself to spot red flag Beam fans trying to cozy up to her for information or access to Gloria and now she's real mean about it when it happens.

Big City Greens Plants Season 4 Premiere For September 23 on Disney Channel + Guest Cast List
Bingo Bango! Disney Branded Television has set primetime premieres for Big City Greens Season 4 slated to debut Saturday September 23 at 8:00PM EST only on Disney Channel and streaming October 25 only on Disney+.
The episodes airing on September 23 – 'Truck Stopped / Jingled' – have "Tilly and Cricket wrestle with indecision at a truck stop between Big City and the country" in the former, while the latter sees Tilly becoming a Big City jingle writer and rising through the ranks. In addition to premiering on Disney Channel, episodes will also be added to Disney Plus on October 25, 2023.
Guest Stars on Season 4 include musican Michael Bolton as Rick Razzle on Jingled where Tilly wants to become a Big City jingle writer and rising through the ranks. Other guest stars for Season Four include June Diane Raphael (Marvel "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur"), Tom Green ("The Tom Green Show"),NHL player Brad Marchand,Margo Martindale (Sony Pictures "Cocaine Bear"),podcaster Justin McElroy, Tim Meadows (ABC Network "The Goldbergs"), Dean Norris (AMC "Breaking Bad", "Better Call Saul"), Comedian Ms. Pat, Amy Seradis (Netflix "Bojack Horseman", Lucasfilm "The Mandalorian") and comedian Trevor Wallace.
Since it's debut on 2018, Big City Greens has been one of Disney Television Animation recent hits with multiple shorts, a NHL game -themed broadcast special in collaboration with ESPN and a animated feature film based on the series is on production slated for a 2024 release, the series spawned a new legacy of Disney TVA creators like Natasha Kline with chicano lead-driven animated comedy series "Primos" slated for 2024 and more animated shows on development for Disney Channel by Big City Greens Alumnis. (Cheyenne Curtis,Monica Ray, Amy Hudkins,Raj Bruggemann and Houghton Brothers mentor C.H Greenblatt) who will be getting series orders in the coming months.
The new season will include the show's 100th episode, which is a major landmark for any animated series, but especially for a Disney Channel series with few ever making it quite that far. "Season four is pure insanity," says Chris Houghton, Big City Greens co-creator and executive producer. "Tilly becomes a commercial jingle-writer, Cricket tries stand-up comedy, Bill loses his mind like six times, and Gramma dabbles in minimalism. The fact that we have such a fun arena to play in when it comes to these characters is not lost on us or our crew. Even though we’ve told so many stories with these characters, this season feels fresher than ever." "There are some very funny and silly episodes in this season," adds Shane, "like 'Handshaken' where country folks act like western gunslingers, but assert their power through firm handshakes. There are also a few emotional episodes that reach out and give your heart a good squeeze – 'Family Tree' is one that makes me tear up every time I watch a cut of it. And biggest of all, Chip Whistler is back! This season may have more action, adventure, and thrills than any previous season! And here's a couple rapid-fire teases you’ll see in season four: Gloria hires a new café employee, Vasquez goes to therapy, and the kids meet a long lost family member."
Additionaly Big City Greens will continue with new shorts trought the Disney TVA multi-platform division trought Chibi Tiny Tales, Broken Karaoke,Theme Song Takeover, How NOT To Draw & Random Rings.
Big City Greens characters will continue to host on the Disney Television Animation's crossover compilation series "Chibiverse" as it's second season is slated to debut Saturday September 23.

Prince Skyline Sport Coupe by Michelotti. (1 of 60).
The Prince Skyline was a car with humble beginnings that would slowly evolve into one of the most famous Japanese sports cars in the world – the Nissan Skyline and the almost universally loved Nissan GT-R.
The Skyline model range started in 1957 as a modest four-door sedan with a 1,482cc 4-cylinder engine producing 60 hp, and capable of a top speed of 87 mph. Nissan and Prince would merge in the 1960s, the Skyline was one of the Prince cars that survived – eventually becoming a major member of the Nissan stable.
One of the most famous early Skylines is the car you see here, the Skyline Sport Coupe by Michelotti. It was the work of Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti who was hired to pen the eye-catching bodywork, using the Prince Gloria as the base platform. The Gloria was the slightly larger sibling to the Skyline, with a 1.9 litre engine that offered a little more power, and a slightly larger overall footprint allowing more room inside the cabin. Michelotti used this larger platform to his advantage, creating both a luxurious coupe and a convertible, with ample interior space, canted headlights, and remarkably good visibility from inside the car thanks to the narrow pillars. The unusual headlights weren’t actually that unusual at the time, they’d been used by cars built by automakers like Chrysler, Bentley, and Ferrari. Michelotti would go on to use a somewhat similar headlights design again on the Triumph Vitesse in 1962.The early 1960s were a time of rapid change in the automotive world, with many car makers competing to create and establish new design language for the new decade. It was a forward-thinking move by Prince to hire Michelotti at the beginning of the decade to design them a new body, at the same time giving the brand the significant image boost that comes with the hiring of a well-known Italian designer.
Under the hood, the Prince Skyline Sport Coupe used the same 91 hp 1.9 litre engine as the Gloria, so performance was sedate rather than aggressive. The transmission is a 4-speed manual column-shift, and power is sent back to a live axle rear end. Over the course of the model’s very limited production run, only approximately 60 examples of Michelotti’s Skyline were built. Despite their relative rarity, they were a common sight in Toho films of the early 1960s – largely because Prince had a very proactive (and very successful) PR team who were adept at getting their cars used in films.

LUCY & THE SWANS
BALL, CAPOTE & PALEY
Tumblr media
The new FX series "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" depicts a world that Lucille Ball knew all too well - wealth, fame and celebrity. Although she does not inhabit the New York Society of Babe Paley, Slim Keith, Ann Woodward, C.Z. Guest, Gloria Guinness and others, she and her Desilu empire lie just outside of it - her influence on the era keenly felt.
Tumblr media
Episode 1 of the teleplay ("Pilot") begins in 1958, and takes us to the executive boardroom of CBS in New York. There, Bill Paley (Treat Williams) holds forth, a photo of Lucy and Desi prominently hovering over his shoulder.
Tumblr media
In this room, the Paley and the CBS brass made programming moves played out on a schedule board. The Monday 9pm time slot is occupied by "I Love Lucy", with a small photo of Lucy and Desi (the same one that hung on the wall) tucked into the title card - as if they needed reminding of who they were! The only slight faux pas is that "I Love Lucy" (as a half hour series) did not run in 1958. Its final episode aired in May 1957. It then became an hour-long celebrity-driven musical comedy hour under the banner of "The Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse." Paley and CBS probably wanted Lucy and Desi for a 7th season, but Desi had other plans. He wouldn't kill the Ricardos (metaphorically) but relegate them to specials, interspersed with Desilu productions of new drama and comedy. It is possible that the action of "Feud" in this scene lies somewhere in that murky period between Desi's plans, and Paley's wishes for a seventh season of the half-hour format.
Tumblr media
In actuality, during 1958, the 9pm Monday time slot was occupied by "The Danny Thomas Show" (filmed at Desilu) and "The Ann Sothern Show" (produced by Desilu). Monday also featured the Desilu Western "The Texan," making the only half hour of CBS's Monday primetime NOT created by Lucy and Desi "Father Knows Best."
Tumblr media
Episode 6 ("Hats, Gloves, and Effete Homosexuals") set in 1978 includes a luncheon conversation at La Cote that mentions Lucille Ball and Lucie Arnaz. Truman's new boyfriend Rick (Vito Schnabel) is a handyman who once fixed Ball's air conditioner in Palm Springs.
Tumblr media
Truman has promised to bring Rick to see They're Playing our Song on Broadway starring Lucie Arnaz. Rick says that he met little Lucie while she was swimming laps.
BILL & BABE PALEY
Tumblr media
The power and influence of William S. Paley cannot be underestimated. He literally built CBS (the Columbia Broadcasting System) from a small radio station to a multi-media conglomerate, serving as Chairman for much of its existence. He shepherded CBS from radio to television, and was responsible for giving the green light to Lucille Ball making the transition from "My Favorite Husband" to "I Love Lucy," bringing her real-life husband along for the ride. Without Paley and Lucy, CBS would not have gotten a foothold in an industry dominated by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
Tumblr media
Paley's second wife was socialite Barbara Cushing Mortimer, who he married the year before he met Lucille Ball. Mortimer is best known as Babe Paley, and she was Truman Capote's favorite of the Swans. In "Lucy's Barbershop Quartet" (1963), the group needs to find a replacement singer for the group and Viv suggests the unseen character of Barbara Cushing, who is a soloist in their church choir. Although Lucy, Viv, Thelma, and Dorothy were definitely not swans (more like Danfield Ducks) the writers were tipping their hat to the big boss's wife.
Tumblr media
A few years later, in "Lucy Meets Danny Kaye" (1964), Kaye telephones Bill Paley to see if he has any spare tickets for his show to give fan Lucy. The best he can do is tickets to "The Jackie Gleason Show." Paley does not appear, nor do we hear his voice.
Tumblr media
In real life, Paley and Ball were both in the first group of inductees to the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1984. Ball and Paley sat at the same table together at the ceremony.
Tumblr media
In 1976, he joined those paying tribute to Lucy on "Lucy and CBS: The First 25 Years." Paley and his wife Babe had homes in Manhasset Long Island, and Squam New Hampshire, respectively known as Kiluna Farm South, and Kiluna Farm North, where they entertained a myriad of celebrities, Lucille Ball among them.
TRUMAN CAPOTE
Tumblr media
On screen Lucille Ball had little to no interaction with writer Truman Capote. But in her personal life, Ball was guest at at least one of his lavish parties. Gary and Lucy's photo album included a photo of the Mortons at a December 13, 1975 party hosted by Capote, Allan Carr, and John O'Shea in Lincoln Heights, a wealthy neighborhood of Los Angeles. The 'mug shot' was part of a party game where guests were 'arrested' and forced to pay bail in order to get released. The money was usually donated to the host's favorite charity.
Tumblr media
In July 1978, Capote joined Lucille Ball at Westbury Music Fair to see Lucie Arnaz perform in "Annie Get Your Gun".
Tumblr media
Capote's one foray into acting was in Neil Simon's Murder By Death (1976), a camp comedy send-up of Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries where Capote played the eccentric host, Lionel Twain. The film featured a few stars with close connections to Lucille Ball.
Peter Sellars (Sidney Wang) starred in Will The Real Mr. Sellars...?, an oddball film from 1969 with a very brief cameo by Lucille Ball courtesy of hidden camera footage.
Elsa Lanchester (Jessica Marbles) famously guest-starred on "I Love Lucy" as a woman who may - or may not be - a hatchet murderess. In 1973, she appeared on "Here's Lucy" as kooky bank robber Mumsie Westcott.
Although screen writer Neil Simon never wrote for Lucille Ball, or even appeared on the same screen with her, they did share credits on two television shows. He was a staff writer on “The Garry Moore Show,” which Lucy appeared on in 1960. Simon and Ball were both featured on “Bob Hope’s World of Comedy” (1976), but were not onstage at the same time.  It was Lucie Arnaz who worked closest with Simon. She starred on Broadway in They’re Playing Our Song (for which Simon wrote the libretto) in 1978. She then took over the role of Bela in Simon's Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play Lost in Yonkers in 1992.
MISC. SWANS

“According to legend, Elizabeth Taylor exclaimed, ‘It stinks!’ when she saw Butterfield 8 for the first time. She is said to have hurled her shoes at the screen and stormed out of the room, using profanity. That’s how much she hated the film that would earn her the first of two Oscars … Taylor believed it was a stinker right from the start. According to the book Inside Oscar, she told Sol Siegel, MGM’s head of production, when she read the script based on John O’Hara‘s novel about a high-class call girl: ‘This is the most pornographic script I have ever read. I’ve been here for 17 years, and I was never asked to play such a horrible role as Gloria Wandrous. She’s a sick nymphomaniac. I won’t do it for anything.’ But Taylor was forced to do the role to meet the terms of her contract. Later, she was glad she did -- when she finally won an Oscar after three previous defeats. Backstage, after the awards ceremony, her husband Eddie Fisher said to her, ‘Here, let me carry the Oscar. It must be heavy for you.’ ‘It isn’t,’ she said. ‘I’ll carry it until it’s too much. I waited a long time.’”

Time to go back in time for an appointment of some old Hollywood tea or forgotten gossip. This is part one of many to come because there's plenty to choose from. Today we're doing a taste test.
Joan Collins was set to replace Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. She was basically on standby and almost got the part when Taylor got sick but the actress recovered soon after she heard that Collins was in the talks. We all know how it turned out. An ultra expensive epic known for its cost and that it brought together Liz and Richard Burton.
Gloria Grahame used to be married to director Nicholas Ray. It is alleged that she had sex with her 13-year old stepson (Ray's kid) and Ray found them. Years later, they actually got married, but her career was over because of the rumors.
Tumblr media
Grace Kelly slept with almost all her leading men until she retired early from acting to become a princess. She had a thing for older guys.
Hitchcock was 25 when he found out what a period is. It happened when the production team couldn't move on with the filming because the actress couldn't shoot her scenes in the swimming pool. Someone had to explain to Hitchcock the reason and what is a menstrual cicle.
Natalie Wood's death is still a mystery. Long considered an accident, as she fell from a yacht on which she was spending her time with her husband Robert Wagner and Christopher Walker. In 2018, Wagner was named as person of interest in her death, but nothing came of that. Some still he believed he was involved.

Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke were in a relationship since the 70s until late 80s. Both were married. Sondra's relationship with her husband Gordon Anderson was platonic, he was gay. Eastwood knew this, he was fine with it. He bought a house for her to live together while Anderson was also apparently living on the estate. Eastwood didn't want any children with Locke and it is said that under his demand and after two abortions, she underwent tubal ligation. Of course Eastwood got bored a few years later, cheated again, took away everything from Sondra including her home and then procedeed to have her blacklisted from Hollywood (she was an actress and director).
Frank Sinatra told Mia Farrow that he could have Woody Allen's legs broken (involving his mob buddies) if she wishes to. This was during custody battles between Farrow and Allen for their children. Sinatra and Farrow were married for two years between 1966-1968. (Ronan Farrow does look like Frank and it's one conspiracy theory I happily indulge in).
Tatum O'Neal wrote in a memoir that Stanley Kubrick's 12 year old daughter Vivian had a crush on Ryan O'Neal which apparently wasn't "unrequited". Kubrick and O'Neal also had a falling out around that time while they were working on Barry Lyndon.
It is alleged and heard by third parties in some restaurant that back in the 80s during the filming of The Color of Money, Paul Newman and Tom Cruise were seen at a party in which both of them were in the swimming pool, kissing.
Tumblr media
If you look it up on reddit, there's still a photo on the internet of Marlon Brando giving a blowjob (I checked, it's still there). The man in question is said to be Willy Cox, old friend of Marlon. The photo was published in some memoir.
All these rumors need to be taken with a grain of salt. Some of them are quite known, others completely unverifiable. You can always dig deeper if you're interested in any of them.

Rock Hard - September 1999, Interview with Oliver and Richard
Rammstein-mania and no end.
Just returned from their first headlining tour in America, Germany's currently most successful noise producers are back with a live album and a video.
But that's not all: production of the third album, which is supposed to hit the charts worldwide in spring 2000, begins in autumn.
« Ask us how it was in America » beams guitarist Richard Kruspe.
"Yes! Come on, ask us that», bass player Oliver Riedel also messes up the interview preparation.
Hello Ramstein! How was it in America?
« Great! Haha. » (Lord in heaven! Can it get any hollower? - Red.)
Somehow Richard is almost in a good mood. He laughs and shines continuously like the dear sun. Something must have happened there...
« First we had Skunk Anansie in the opening act, then Soulfly. We are now friends with Skunk Anansie. Great band, great people! »
That means you're now friends with Skin too...
« Yes, of course! Why not? »
Well, they say the front woman is incredibly politically correct...
« Aren't we? Hihi », giggles Mr. Kruspe.
« Skin was approached by others like: How can you with them… », adds Oliver. « But she has convinced herself with her own eyes that we are not as we were sometimes portrayed in the press. »
Did you have the impression that convinced Rammstein fans came to your concerts, or was it more of a mixed audience that generally listens to heavier acts?
Richard: « The fans are mostly younger than our audience in Germany. Many came in Rammstein shirts and sang along to our lyrics. »
Oliver: « On average, 2,000 to 3,000 fans came. »
Richard: «By the way, we didn't really warm to Max von Soulfly. He almost never got off his bus. »
Oliver: «He had four kids and his wife with him. Max's band was totally annoyed and always wanted to come with us. »
Max's wife Gloria is said to be an extremely demanding person...
Oliver: « It also looks very tiring, hihi. I can understand why Sepultura distanced themselves. »
But enough chattering about other people's family affairs that are none of our business. Your album "Live aus Berlin" will be released at the end of August, and the corresponding video for the concert that took place in Berlin's Wulheide last summer should follow in mid-September. In view of the fact that I think nine out of ten live videos suck, I have to say: respect! The film is a real experience.
Richard: «At Rammstein, I always wished I could look at this band and their performance from the outside. When we watched the video on a big screen with the distributors and label people, I had a great time. We've been doing this show for two years and I didn't find it boring. We watched a lot of live videos beforehand - Ministry, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, U2... I see us as the front runner compared to the other films. »
How long did you work on the two shows in Wulheide? And what did this fun cost you?
Oliver: «I estimate that we paid about 500,000 marks. That means if it wasn't for the record and the video we would have had to pay a lot because the tickets for those two shows weren't that expensive. »
Richard: « Live records are usually boring. When you make an album like that, you have to involve the people. We wanted a record that people could hear themselves on. And we tried to capture that visually. For each piece, the video shows the fans, and very often individual people, singing or playing. The shows were shot by 16 camera crews. »
Oliver: «The question of how we should design the light show was very difficult. The entire preparatory phase took half a year. »
How about the liveness of the album?
Richard: «There are no overdubs. We left everything as it was. »
But not in the video...
Richard: «Yes. »
No. In the first track, 'Spiel mit mir', Till holds up the mic during the chorus — but his voice comes through with full force.
Richard: "Really? You got us there, haha. »
Oliver: «Two shows were recorded. It may be that the picture is from one concert and the sound from the other. »
Did anything go wrong during the concerts or during the shoot that the fans didn't notice?
Richard: «We had a big dress rehearsal, where everything went haywire. »
Oliver: « And at the concerts, the big anti-aircraft searchlights went crazy. They should focus the light into a large roof. Of course, things didn't do that. Suddenly three lights came on in the back and another didn't work at all. »
Were there also situations in which the musicians, glaring at the audience, had to hold back their laughter?
Richard: « Yes, whenever Till's big dildo squirts. »
Oliver: «There is always a guy behind the stage who has to pump the artificial sperm to Till. And on stage you can hear the pumping noises pretty loud. I could throw myself out laughing every time. »
Did you also have plans for the two shows that couldn't be realized at all?
Oliver: « Actually, the concerts were supposed to start with helicopters flying in, enveloping everything in a huge sea of lights. We had already organized the helicopters. But since the things have to fly at least 200 meters above the audience, we had to do without it because the effect would simply be missing. »
On the one hand, you appear strict, martial, almost militarily disciplined on stage. On the other hand, your keyboarder Flake breaks this framework by inserting an ecstatic, wild dance interlude. And Oliver edits his bass almost Kornlike. Is this done by arrangement, or is spontaneity allowed with you?
Oliver: «We only have rough guidelines. Of course nobody goes on stage with a red carnival costume. This is where spontaneity has its limits. And as far as our movements go, anyone who tours regularly with other bands is influenced by them. I don't rule out that another musician influenced me to play the bass in a stooped position. »
Richard: « It's funny that during our tour together, the Ramones bassist suddenly stood on stage, crossed his arms and glared at the audience. Who do you think he got that from? »
When you stand in front of more than 20,000 people, as happened in Wulheide, do you feel power?
Richard: «I feel bigger than I am in normal life. But it is not a feeling of power, but a feeling of glory. »
Oliver: «I concentrate too much on the concert and on what I have to play. That's why I don't really get the audience's attention. I don't feel that people are looking at me. »
Richard: «It's different for me. I always look for one or the other fan and make eye contact. I need it. Otherwise concerts would have no value for me. For this reason, we also attached great importance to the fact that individual fans and their facial expressions can be seen in the video. »
You are a phenomenon in two ways. On the one hand you have sold around four million records worldwide with German-speaking music. On the other hand, you became famous in Germany with a musical concept that, with its main ingredients — metal combined with electronics — is not exactly considered promising in this country. How do you explain your success?
Richard: «I've always been looking for the ideal guitar sound and at the same time I asked myself: Why can't you hear great guitars on the radio? Mostly pop songs. I think some of them are pretty cool, but they would be even cooler with great guitars. So we combined pop songs with guitars and the experiment worked. »
Oliver: «We don't really have anything to do with industrial. Bands like Ministry are worlds apart. »
Oliver, you used to be the bass player for the alternative/folk group The Inchtabokables. And although you're more of a quiet, reserved guy, your stage name at the time was Orgy-Olli...
Richard: « Orgy-Olli? Haha, I didn't even know that. Olivier? Report to us! »
Oliver: « Haha! There's a nice story about that. After the concerts, my fellow musicians always stormed into parties - in the hope of meeting women. Something like that wasn't really my cup of tea, and so I usually went to the hotel alone. Once again it was such an evening. I walked into the hotel and suddenly found myself surrounded by ten screaming female fans. My band was partying somewhere, but I had the women around me. What to do? I went up to the room with them and didn't know what to do with them. I'm just not that pick-me-up. I turned on the telly, but that was kind of boring. So I grabbed ladies and took them to this party where the others were already partying — no women, of course. When we snowed in, my bandmates couldn't believe their eyes. Olli, the secret philanderer — the orgy-Olli. »
Richard: «Another secret revealed, heh. »
But now you have to reveal the last secret: Please tell us everything worth knowing about the next studio album.
Richard: « We're going into the studio in October and hope that the record will be out in spring 2000. Sometimes the guitars will sound even heavier. We also want to use the keyboards even more effectively and broadly. We are also thinking about a new role-playing game for singing. It cannot be ruled out that another voice will be heard on the next record. By the way: we will produce the album in New York, hehe. »
Something doesn't seem right about you, or seems almost too right. You are laughing happiness personified...
Richard: «I'm in seventh heaven at the moment because I'm madly in love with a New Yorker. We're getting married in the fall. That means I'll be in New York very often in the future. »
Actually it's a pity that - except for the official press photos - it's not allowed to take snapshots in situations like this. A blissfully smiling Richard would also be a cool picture for our readers.
Richard: «I'll send you a wedding picture. Deal? »
Deal.

Empress: “Here is an example (Fox article). Dolly and Reese are as big as it gets in this industry. Notice how there is no mention of the $.”
Page Six: “’Meghan’s not doing a Reese [Witherspoon] or making acquisitions for herself,’ the source (hey, Omid!) added, referring to the latter’s Hello Sunshine production company, which has turned several books into film or TV projects. ‘She doesn’t want to direct or act.’…Someone who knows the couple told Page Six that Markle wants to be like a combination of famous women: ‘A bit of Reese, a bit of Gwyneth [Paltrow, founder of Goop] a bit of Princess Kate, a bit of Gloria Steinem.’”
-------
LOL! MM is really really triggered by the Reese/Dolly comparisons! Thus her typical immediate clapback. But no worries, Megs, unlike Oscar winner Reese, you can’t act or direct anyway. We been knew. And Scooby Doo actually admitting on the record that Megs is cosplaying/stalking Reese, Gwyneth, “Glo,” and Catherine?!! (He forgot Diana and Angelina.) Okayyyyy…
