Real talk, to expand on my barely coherent ramblings from yesterday, I UNDERSTAND why people ship it, but I just don’t ship it myself lol. Also, I am also gay irl so check and mate 👁️ 👁️
I guess it comes down to: I just personally think Miguel and Ray’s relationship is more interesting if it’s platonic, with Mukada investing in/struggling with trying to help Miguel from the standpoint of priest/counselor/friend(?). I think Mukada does take a special interest in Miguel’s case (at least, we don’t really have any other storylines to compare it to) and Miguel is probably more receptive than other inmates to Mukada’s guidance, because he is actually trying to change lol. I think simply the question of Mukada’s success with Miguel is one that could be/have been more explored. We don’t really get much with their story by the end. Their interactions sort of peter out by the end of the show, but considering that Miguel hits a low again by s6, I suspect that Mukada would probably start to take more interest in trying to help again at a future point, because as the prison chaplain with many inmates to attend to(and also, just the way Mukada is lol), I think he steps in more when he feels he can actually accomplish something/uplift.
To get back to the question, I love a complex ship but Miguel x Ray is one of those rare cases where the pairing immediately becomes more boring to me and not really as compelling if it’s romantic or sexual LOL. That’s just my view. I sort of feel that way about most “mentor figure x character they are trying to help/save” dynamics tbh, now that I think about it, which is what Ray and Miguel is to me, so that's also probably got something to do with it. I feel like if there's something there, it'd be one-sided or like idk. I'm not saying I wouldn't read it (I think I've checked out a couple of fics before idr) but I'm not like "OOHLALA!!" about ray/miguel in the shipping sense, if that makes sense...

maybe me getting drunk is just ---> wow chico is really hot. of coruse, i wouldn't think this as a regular thought but for the fact that i strategetically only drink on saturdays which is also the day that we watch OZ. so i really should work on my fic at this point but i keep thinking woow wowoowow. i need to write something sexy for once like acutally. There is a song called Down in Mexico that I want to write a fic based on where it's like an Au where miguel is on the run and meet chico after crossing the border and they hook up . <3 I think it would be interesting but i am NOOTTT good at writing smut so ive yet to write it but one day (hopefully I will). i think a hang up i have with writing Oz is like I'm like "this is a cold place" but jhonestly? fanfiction is a kind of escapism so I needn't apply such realism loll. myabe they just fall in love? EVER THINK Of THAt. it could be beautiful. i should write fluff more 😤 Altho, for now, I need to work on my cdrama fanfic bc god knows i dont' relaly have time to write during the week lately. i love you chico x miguel. what a great ship! hits all the spots for me.

i think writng a fic with more catholic guilt would be interesting. personallhy my only religious experience with asian fathers is like the bible study i was tricked into as a teen (due to moms) (i also went to christian camp and a catholic university but somehow i retained no christian knowledge really) .so i have an aversion to asian christians due to the person homophobia I experienced. but I think mukada is nice and sort of interesting sometimes. I don't relaly think much of mukada/miguel tho because I feel like mukada is more of a mentor in that situation rather than a lover. and i don't think he would be toxic like that altho i can see why people ship it.
sister is insane with the mukada x glynn of course.
I think other ships worthy of exploration include:
ryan x tobias (need to read/comment on more fic for this. i have trouble concentrating on reading which is why i still haven't gone through the whole archive). I really like ryan in fanfiction altho i must admit i don't care for him much in the actual show. i read ryanx miguel fic before i had finished watching the show and the writers were so talented i ended up enjoying the fic/pairing, altho i think if i had watched the show first, i wouldn't have shipped at all bv ryna is highkey a piece of shit lol.
ryan x stanislofskyi. GET ON IT.
i find myself writing more jia kenmin & cyril fic. (well, two). I think jia kenmin is really just so underwritten it's hard to know what he thinks (beside arrogant) but cyril is so nice. I think an interesting au would be if kenmin actually taught cyril wushu. god, would cyril call kenmin kenny?? btw kenmin is pronounced closer to "kin mean" actually. they don't pronounce it properly in the show. i wish he was a better character because chinese are so underrepresented in u.s media (of course this was the 90s, but at the same time, there are 90s new york shows with plenty of asian rep). Oz is actually really bad at depiction race outside of black and white. there are no south asians in Oz lol. Also it's stupid that Kenmin and Chen and the refugees all seem to be from the mainland. my mom emigrated to the U.S in the 80s and she lived in New york for a while when she had her work visa and worked in a restaurant and she said that most of the asian people there were from taiwan and japan at the time and the taiwanese looked down on the mainlanders for being backwards and poor (they had a big superiority complex and discriminated against mainlanders) . i feel like jia kenmin looks like he's maybe from guangdong or some such province so i imagine his parents are first generation. li chen is maybe from the north because he is paler. their (the actors) chinese sucks, of course. maybe there are no triad members in oz because they just don't get caught, though? It's probably a good thing there are no arab inmates in oz or i think they wouldve done some piss poor 9/11 plot tbh (woe) [EDIT: sober me coming in to add/close this tangent --> what I wanted to say about Kenmin, Chen, and the refugees is that I think it would've made more sense for some of them to be from Hong Kong]

Stray thoughts:
Everyone came back after lock down with a haircut lol
Me and Sister cackled pretty much throughout the whole scene where Diane was revealed to have married a palace guard; Sister: He’s like “oh how could she do this to me?” Like dude, how could she NOT do it to you?
Sister recognised the actor who plays Beecher’s dad
I just think it's funny the Latinos congregate in a corner directly behind a security camera
Final Thoughts:
Sister: I wish the french guy had stuck around for longer but it was apparent that they weren’t going to put him in a gang, so it’s not like he would have had much else to do if he stuck around.
Sister remained baffled at how negligent Howell had to have been to not notice McCullum chewing himself to death for a week
I found Ryan's manipulation of Tarrant an interesting parallel to how he sort of buddies up to but also manipulates Beecher in S1. If Tarrant had stuck around for longer, do you think he would've had a Beecher like progression? Or was he too soft from the get-go?

Wip wednesday!!
I thought I had worked on a lot this week, but when I went to go search for a snippet to share, I couldn't really find anything 😆 The above is from "Desire Path", which I feel like is my fallback for wip wednesdays because it's my longest wip right now LOL.
After careful consideration, I realised that I actually haven't written that much for my Oz wips recently—I just THOUGHT I had because I did actually just write and post "Dead Air" last week. Like that's very much a thing that happened lmao. I made a couple gifsets over the past week, too, and in the process spent a lot of time just staring at images and thinking really hard about the characters, so I guess things sort of blended together in my mind. What is time, anyway?
In other writing news, I've been working on a couple of prompts for the Cdrama action thing this past week/week and a half, i.e, filling prompts in exchange for users donating to aid for Palestine. It's been fun thinking about my old fandom—The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty—again, having taken some time away from it... Doubly interesting, I guess, because I have been working on prompts for the main ship of that fandom, which I never actually wrote for at the height of my hyperfixation (I wrote 50+ fics for a rare/sidepair instead 🤣✌🏼).
I still have two prompts for that event to work on, so I've sort of just been working on Oz things here and there. After the bit of writer's block I had with "In the Course of Destiny" (mostly gone now!), I've realised (not for the first time, to be honest) that it's best for me to remember to aim short. Me being me, that is, longwinded, the fic is sure to run past my word aim anyway, and also, I psyche myself out whenever I get ambitious and try to write some sprawling epic. "Holding Up the Sky" was a bit of a breeze because I had no real idea what I was doing, and didn't decide to post it as a chaptered fic until I had already written up to the part where Miguel has the second meeting with Sykes... so there was no time to psyche myself out about ch.3, basically, because I was already fully in it.
One of the troubles I've been having with "In the Course of Destiny" is that the fic has completely gone off the rails from what I initially envisioned. Maybe I'll talk more about it when I actually get it the fuck completed, but as I said before (somewhere), that fic wasn't even initially supposed to HAVE a robbery, and adding it has really changed everything... and maybe not for the better, either.
Me 🤝🏼 Miguel, shooting ourselves in the foot with this series. Not that he's going to shoot himself in the foot... well, 啧. You'll see, I guess. Eventually.
IN MEMORIAM this week:
crack ficlet I wrote on a device that subsequently died, taking the fic with it. I might try to rewrite it, but I might also just let it go in the wind, because it wasn't that well written anyway. The premise was that Jaime did actually successfully kill Chico in the showers lol

Me for the past like 3 months: I'm going to write a Miguel/Chico fic around this song so help me god (*hasn't*)
I'll think of the specific situation soooomeday. I've come close but it was never the right vibe so I always went with a different title/pivoted the inspo after setting out. I usually either come up with a title later or have a title pick out from the very beginning. LIKE. I really want to write a fic with this song in mind, but at this point, all I can think of are AUs, and I want this for a non-AU. I came close with a wip I just started but then the vibe twisted so I had to let the idea of crafting it around this song go. -_- So, the effort continues. But someday... That's my goal right now lol. The yearning. I love yearning. Would love to inflict it upon Miguel and/or Chico someday
