i read all of the denki mystery stories in a frenzy a few weeks ago and have been stewing on kiru concepts for it ever since.... shes a laundry attendant in akatsuka village with [less than] loose ties to the matsuno family. in this au shes particularly close to toshio/jyushi, who begins frequenting the laundromat after his grandmother's death in spite of the considerable wealth the ogami estate has. he seems aware that theres a connection there but he isnt sure what it really is...

this is ippei, keikos younger brother! hes a 1st year at akatsuka high school, having elected to go there in hopes of the city providing him with better computer electives since he wants to go into programming. since the commute to/from shimotsuma would be too long for everyday travel, he lives with kiru and keiko in the meantime :-) he doesnt really have a whole lot going on outside of that since hes honestly just a normal teen [and has enough friends that he doesnt need to be kickin it with a bunch of ~30 year olds], though i imagine he would serve as a bit of a reminder to the adult cast of how trends/fads are moving along with the younger crowd. i can definitely imagine, like, totty going to him for advice on what is/isnt "in" after its pointed out that hes a bit behind the curve in terms of trends

since i was explaining it to my friends yesterday so its fresh on the mind. so here we go! first things first i should point out: kiru is actually half Ōbeikei! her dad moved to mainland japan from chichijima as a young adult for college. i should note that while the ogasawara/bonin islands ARE considered japanese territory the majority of people living on the islands, especially Ōbeikei people who arent of japanese descent (in kiru's case her family on that side is primarily descended from the polynesian settlers to chichijima with some overlap to the japanese community there), usually refer to themselves as Ōbeikei or bonin islanders and not japanese. so if asked kiru would say shes half Ōbeikei! because of the bonin islands' tumultuous history, particularly from the start of WWII up until the late 60's, forced assimilation and changing of hands from japan to america [and then back again] meant that a lot of the Ōbeikei people living on the islands had both a japanese name and a western name, and the same is the case for the nikuya family! their surname was originally "butcher", but when japan enacted more forced assimilation on the island via name change in the 40s, any families that weren't already using japanese names had to pick one. as such they chose "nikuya" as it was the direct translation of their current surname and they thought it would make things easier

since kiru's dad was born at the tail end of "navy time" [aka 1946-1968, when only the Ōbeikei people were allowed to live on the island under heavy military restrictions + the japanese people living there were forced to stay in mainland japan], and the reversion back to being part of japan happened when he was very young, he grew up using both "butcher" AND "nikuya" as a surname, and often times wouldn't even really pay attention to which was being used. however, when he moved to mainland japan he stopped using "butcher" as a surname so he would have an easier time adjusting. thus we have kirumi nikuya!

that being said the doylist perspective for her surname being "nikuya" was definitely a butch joke
