“The mist is worse here,” said Lan Sizhui, “Stay with me.”

Jin Ling’s eyes darted around, constantly on the lookout for ghosts as he kept quiet and let Lan Sizhui take the lead. “I haven’t even heard any of the others. Where are we?”

Lan Sizhui studied their barely visible surroundings, catching glimpses of a few shoddy, abandoned stalls. “A market street, I think—and I’m sure we’ll run into them eventually. All any of us can do is go in circles, after all.”

A shadow flew past the corner of Jin Ling’s eye. He jumped and whipped around, his hand trembling on the hilt of his sword. Such a weapon would surely be useless against a ghost but it calmed his nerves to know he at least had something to protect himself.

“Sizhui,” Jin Ling whispered, “There’s something out here…”

No answer.

Jin Ling turned around to find that Lan Sizhui was gone and he was completely alone. A twinge of panic coursed through his veins as he twirled around, unsure if he should move or stay in one place.

“Sizhui?!” he called, frantically searching the mist.

Another shadow glided through the murky atmosphere. He jumped back and gripped one of the arrows in his quiver. With his other hand still on his sword, his mind tried to figure out which weapon would be the best defense.

He narrowed his eyes and frowned, taking a brave step forward as he barked, “Sizhui, cut it out already! This isn’t funny!”

He knew Lan Sizhui was the last person to pull pranks, which made the situation even worse. Jin Ling was growing more worried for his fellow disciple than himself as the unnatural silence of the city chilled him to the bone.

The shadow from before returned, spinning towards him this time in a howling whirlwind. Jin Ling inhaled and finally moved, flying through the mist until he ran into something strong but soft, warm and familiar.

The fresh scent of orange blossom and cedar wood surrounded Jin Ling like a comforting blanket as two confused hands awkwardly encircled his waist.

Lan Sizhui looked down at him and frowned. “Young Master Jin? Are you—“

Jin Ling suddenly pushed against the Lan boy’s chest and sprang backwards, his amber eyes burning with annoyance. “You—! Why did you leave me?!”

Lan Sizhui lifted his brows and blinked, not sure how to respond. “Wha—“

The young Jin disciple spared him no room to even attempt an explanation. “You tell me to stay with you, then leave me behind! Ridiculous!”

He crossed his arms over his chest and looked off to the side, his bangs blowing outward as he sighed. “I called you three times. Something was running around out here and—“ He paused for a moment, cheeks burning as he looked back up at Lan Sizhui with a pout. “I-I was worried, but you look fine,” he mumbled. “Why didn’t you answer me?”

Lan Sizhui’s head was spinning trying to keep up with Jin Ling’s heated outburst. “Young Master Jin, I’m sorry but I honestly didn’t hear you. I thought you were still behind me—“

“Whatever,” Jin Ling interrupted, “Just… don’t wander off, I’m not gonna save you if you do something stupid.”

Lan Sizhui stifled a laugh, no stranger to Jin Ling’s fiery way of showing concern. “The mist really is bad here,” he said. “Maybe this would help?”

Jin Ling’s eyes widened and his imaginary hackles raised when Lan Sizhui offered him his hand, the Lan boy’s long, slender fingers safe and inviting. “Huh?! What are you… I-I’m not a baby! All I said is don’t wander off, it’s not that—“

Once again, the shadow from earlier barreled towards Jin Ling and hit him with a glacial gust of air, this time accompanied by the buoyant, echoing giggle of a child.

Jin Ling yelped and lunged forward, grabbing Lan Sizhui’s hand and hiding behind him, his face buried against the taller boy’s sleeve.

Lan Sizhui watched curiously as the shadow circled around them and disappeared into the mist. He glanced down at the trembling Jin disciple and smiled. “It looks like you’ve made a friend.”

Jin Ling popped his head out from Lan Sizhui’s sleeve and glared into the mist with an irritated expression. “I-I don’t need any friends! Tell it to go away!”

Lan Sizhui gently squeezed his hand and laughed. “It’s okay, it’s harmless. Just a playful spirit.”

Obviously unconvinced, Jin Ling scrunched his nose and went right back to using Lan Sizhui as a shield.

“A-Ling,” Lan Sizhui chimed, his tone gentle and sweet.

Jin Ling looked up to meet his soft, striking amethyst gaze and could swear his heart skipped a beat.

“I promise I won’t leave you.”

Heat spread from Jin Ling’s neck to his ears to his face like a wildfire, every nerve in his body ping-ponging wildly. He narrowed his eyes and sputtered, “Why say it like that…?! You’re so embarrassing!”

Confusion washed over Lan Sizhui’s face as he tilted his head to the side. “Is that not what you were worried about?”

“Shut up,” Jin Ling mumbled. Still holding Lan Sizhui’s hand, he abruptly tugged him along. “Let’s just go already.”

Lan Sizhui lifted his hand to his mouth and chuckled as he was pulled through the mist by the flustered Jin disciple. “Lead the way.”

Hi!! Love your blog (actually your blog and a few others were the reason I remade a tumblr account haha)! I had a maybe dumb question: I've seen a lot of fanwork stating wen qing was from a branch side of the Wen family and was wondering if that was novel canon? I know in cql there's the dafan wen but it's even in novel only works sometimes so I was wondering if I missed something x) like in the lan family both ljy and lsz are stated to be part of the main family line so being wrh's niece should be enough to be a part of the main wen line too, shouldn't it?

It's not a dumb question, honestly it's so saturated in fandom that it's hard to really make the connection here especially with people forgetting that if you're a part of the main family, you share the name. But yes, she's still a part of the main family. It's just huge. Here's the passage in question that lays that out, and then I'll lay out the two that people usually use to claim that they're not really a part of the Wen family just to see what we're working with.

"Wen Qing could be considered a famous cultivator of the QishanWen Sect. She wasn’t a daughter of the QishanWen Sect’s leader, Wen RuoHan, but instead the daughter of one of Wen RuoHan’s cousins. Although they were far cousins, Wen RuoHan had always had a close relationship to this cousin of his. On top of that, Wen Qing was exceptional in the liberal arts and studied medicine as well. She was a talent, and thus she was rather favored by Wen RuoHan. She often followed Wen RuoHan to the banquets of the QishanWen Sect, which was why Wei WuXian found her face familiar."

Chapter 60: Poisons Part 5

So the book is pretty explicit at this point that she is definitely related to him, and even if it's not a close relationship by blood, she has grown up around him and knows him well because he and her father were very emotionally close and as a result, she's favored by him too.

Of course we can't choose who we're related to, and it's clear even in the same chapter that she very much does not like or approve of what he's doing and she's fighting back in her own way as safely as she can without compromising either her people or especially her brother, but the point stands that she is related to him and not in a questionable way. That Wen in her name is not just for show, she is a part of the family with enough power to do things like hide some fugitives and act strangely without it being questioned.

Now, as for the justifications of them being a distant branch that isn't related, it usually comes down to these two passages:

"Another guest cultivator stood up, “Of course it’s different. The Wen-dogs did all kinds of evil. To arrive at such an end is only karma for them. We only avenged a tooth for a tooth, letting them taste the fruit that they themselves had sown. What’s wrong with this?”

Wei WuXian, “Take revenge on the ones who bite you. Wen Ning’s branch doesn’t have much blood on their hands. Don’t tell me that you find them guilty by association?”"

- Chapter 72: Recklessness Part 1

Here we have Wei Wuxian saying that Wen Ning's branch doesn't have much blood on their hands. But that's less of a branch that isn't related to Wen Ruohan and more the idea that if you have three brothers, each of whom have three sons, and each of those sons have three sons, you usually mark who is descended from who by a branch. They are still a part of the main Wen family, just descended from a particular line, denoted by Wen Ning being the current male heir to it, hence why Wei Wuxian is able to connect it.

A good argument indeed about their relative innocence in the Sunshot Campaign, but not about how connected they are to the clan. As we saw above, that distance did not stop Wen Ruohan and their father from being close, nor did it stop him from later being close with his niece.

Then here's the other one where I notice the tail response from LXC is often left off...

"Lan XiChen responded a moment later, “I have heard of Wen Qing’s name a few of times. I do not remember her having participated in any of the Sunshot Campaign’s crimes.”

Nie MingJue, “But she’s never stopped them either.”

Lan XiChen, “Wen Qing was one of Wen RuoHan’s most trusted people. How could she have stopped them?”"

- Chapter 73: Recklessness part 2

Even though she's a distant cousin, that doesn't stop them from being close to Wen Ruohan and his branch. They're still associated together multiple times.

The long and short of it is I believe there are two reasons why this tends to come up.

The first one is people who struggle with understanding the nature of clans and family and end up taking the people who make the clan of the unique Dafan Wen branch as canon as well, even though in CQL itself, there is never actually a distinction made of where they are from and if they are completely divorced from Wen Ruohan and anything he did. It likely started as shorthand from lacking the novel term Wen Remnants and eventually took on a life of its own.

The other is that people tend to struggle with the idea that not everyone up with Wei Wuxian that he rescued might have been involved in some way in the war and not as entirely innocent as they could have been. They carefully ignore the part where she's mentioned as being close to him, they fall back on the lines of not doing much damage and Wen Ning's branch and come up with the answer that they were not involved in the war at all, that they were all perfectly innocent innocents who never held a sword and erase the nuance of Wei Wuxian protecting them. That shouldn't be as relevant as it is, the point of it all is that they are no longer in war and regardless of what they did, the manner in which they are being treated is unjust. Wei Wuxian takes anyone who's willing to ride away with him.

The fact of the matter is that we know it is likely they did not do much in the war, but they wouldn't have been able to escape it entirely. The fact of the matter is that they are still a part of the main clan and those who escape are named and referred to by the narration as The Remnants Of The Wen Clan, the family. Wen Ning is a part of it, Wen Qing is a part of it, Wen Yuan is a part of it. They are not some mystical branch that's so far unrelated that they have no connection but a similar sounding name, they were a part of the family when it was great and they are still a part of the family when it is fallen.

In this case, branch is because the Wen family is huge. So are at least three of the Five Great Clans. We can't speak with any certainty on the Nie as they're less focused on, and the Jiang we know to be down to Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng because they are the only two in the family that they can send to the indoctrination camp, but the Lan have six boys all the same age who wear the family headband, meaning that there must be at least five families all with the name Lan who were able to have a child in the same year, and even in the Jin we know of Jin Zixun being born from Jin Guangshan's sibling, and also later a Jin Chan who is not connected to any named character, but is still a Jin who is picking on Jin Ling. They are all still a part of the main family, just lower down in the line of succession for Clan Leader. That's all that it means.

mdzs and qzgs crossover idea and notes

In this world, given that lineage isn’t as important, sect heirs would be appointed and become sect leader if the sect leader dies

inner and outer disciples - trainees, guild members are outer disciples, and the actual main line-up, the pro team, are the inner disciples - inner sect disciple - or maybe make it senior disciples instead

All the “old guard” (Sect Heirs) - Ye Xiu, Han Wenqing, Lin Jie, Wei Chen, Zhang Jiale, Sun Zheping, Lin Jingyan, Huang Shaotian (but not Yu Wenzhou) - are friends, know each other from night-hunts together back before the tension got really bad - think, like jl, lsz, ljy, and ozz’s group - this is the equivalent of them knowing each other in-game, back before the glory pro alliance

ee as wen sect - Tao Xuan gets greedy for even more land and power, despite ee already being the most powerful of the great sects

Great sect (before war): ee, tyranny, blue rain, tiny herb, hundred blossoms

After war: tyranny, blue rain, tiny herb, samsara

Blue Rain would be like the Lan sect - place of knowledge, etc etc except without the million rules. Everyone thinks Huang Shaotian’s going to be appointed sect heir, that he’s Wei Chen’s intended heir, so everyone is super surprised when it’s Wenzhou instead - Everyone knew Huang Shaotian was going to be the Sect Heir. Wei Chen hadn’t actually confirmed anything or made the official announcement, but it was only a matter of time, really.

Huang Shaotian is def their generation’s best/strongest swordsman. Ywz is prob better at talismans and formations - his golden core is slightly weaker than the other sect heir/leader’s, but he more than makes up for it w/his knowledge - think wwx after being resurrected w/mxy’s weak golden core

Huang Shaotian lived on the streets like wwx before Wei Chen took him in at around age 8-ish?

Inner disciples - Yu Wenzhou (Sect Heir and eventual Leader), Huang Shaotian (Head Disciple - eventual Sect Heir, though before ywz everyone expected him to become Wei Chen’s successor), Zheng Xuan, Yu Feng, Song Xiao, (eventually) Lu Hanwen (Huang Shaotian’s adopted kid/younger brother)

Fang Shijing is Acting Sect Leader, the way Lan Qiren was, after Wei Chen dies - he’s standing in until Yu Wenzhou eventually officially takes the position

So burning of the Blue Rain/attack on Blue rain - ee comes to burn blue rain, huang shaotian tries to stop them and get a leg broken like lwj; ywz is like lxc and flees with some of their great library’s priceless books. Just like how in canon, lxc escapes and lwj is captured when the Cloud Recesses is burned, ywz flees and huang shaotian is captured? Or maybe not. Maybe EE just leaves him behind with a broken leg. huang shaotian insists on staying at Blue Rain and not fleeing with ywz, not only to (try to) protect the sect but also to cover ywz’s retreat. ee (liu hao, maybe) kills Wei Chen through underhanded means during the sacking, and hst hasn’t spoken a word since (kind of like how he is in canon after wc leaves)

So, yeah, wei chen’s dead

Hst doesn’t speak, not until he’s reunited with Yu Wenzhou again

Or, idea 2 - this is before hst respects ywz, so he’s quiet bc wc’s dead, and then he and this no-name low-ranking (but surprisingly, startlingly intelligent) blue rain disciple defeat the Xuanwu of slaughter and so starts their close bond, because there’s nothing like taking down a legendary beast together to make friends

Huang Shaotian hasn’t spoken in fourteen days. Because—

Wei Chen’s dead, and Blue Rain has been burned to the ground. He’s been sent off along with nineteen of their disciples to EE’s indoctrination. And where before he might have burned in indignation at EE’s arrogance, now, all he feels is numb. He passes the days in the haze, only vaguely aware of the EE overseeing them—some arrogant brat named Liu-something—berating him (probably wanted to recoup some pride after the utter thrashing Huang Shaotian gave EE in the Discussion Conference a couple weeks back, the small part of him not frozen in grief thinks smugly).

Wei Chen had died for him; that hit had been intended for him, and even as the blade hurtled towards him and he wanted nothing more than to wipe the smirk off Liu Hao’s face—that EE bastard—he’d known he wouldn’t be able to dodge in time, not with the broken leg hampering his movements.

He’d braced himself for the pain, but— It never came.

(The sight of Wei Chen, bloodied and dying from taking a hit meant for him will be forever burned into his mind, he thinks.)

His fellow disciples are worried, he knows, has seen them shooting him concerned looks when they think he’s not watching. Even Zheng Xuan has approached him. And he’s the head disciple, should be there to rally and reassure them now that Wei Chen and Yu Wenzhou are gone, but— Every time he tries, the words get caught in his throat/lodge in his throat and not a sound escapes.

I think Liu Hao would take Wen Chao's place - so with the Xuanwu, the whole Mianmian situation still happens only Zhang Jiale and either ywz, wjx, or szp take the place of lwj and jzx and refuse to stand aside - ee uses this as excuse to attack hundred blossoms - 'they led the rebellion/incited resistance to our sect's authority' - so zjl feels guilty, like wwx in canon, even tho it's not his fault and szp would never blame him for the destruction of hundred blossoms the way Madame yu blamed wwx

Also, in Xuanwu cave - Huang Shaotian would be like canon wwx, capitalize on opportunity to turn tides by taking Liu Hao-as-Wen Chao hostage

And then like Yu Wenzhou would show up later - he’s running, has been for a while, with the books he’s safeguarding, taken from the library so that they wouldn’t be destroyed. It’s his duty, he knows, even as he worries about Huang Shaotian. He’s heard no news of Shaotian’s condition, on whether or not he was injured, not when he’s busy evading EE. And that’s when he runs into the disciples of the other sects, fleeing the battlefield that the indoctrination has become, and his blood goes cold when he hears that Shaotian’s still in the collapsed cave. With the Xuanwu of Slaughter.

He doesn’t think. The books are entrusted to him, Blue Rain’s knowledge and heritage and they should be his first priority, but— This is Shaotian. His best friend. His partner. And there is no way he won’t go back for him.

So he does. He gives the books to Zheng Xuan, who he knows he can trust; for all that he is lazy and unmotivated, he’s still a brilliant cultivator, and as loyal as they come besides. He and Shaotian have that in common, so loyal it hurts. And then he braves EE territory. For the first time since he fled the flames and Blue Rain, Yu Wenzhou unsheathes his sword and flies. He hadn’t dared to, before, hadn’t wanted to be caught by EE when he’d had the books to protect. Too conspicuous, he’d known, too easy to spot. But walking all the way to the cave the disciples had been in, all those li, would take far too long, and he doesn’t know how much time Shaotian has. “He was hurt,” Zheng Xuan had told him, a protective frustrated worry?anger lacing his voice, “but I don’t know how badly. I didn’t get a chance to see.”

He has to believe Shaotian’s still alive. Still he flies as fast as he can, fast enough to strain his golden core, though not fast enough to deplete it completely. He’s not that far gone; he knows better than to leave himself vulnerable, in the extremely likely chance that he runs into the Wen.

He’s lucky that the sky is cloudy, a storm brewing in the distance. The cover is a boon, and miraculously, he’s not spotted. Ye Xiu’s not organizing the patrols, then, he realizes, because if the Battle God had, there’s no way he wouldn’t have been caught by now, cloud cover or no. In the corner of his mind that’s not currently preoccupied by Shaotian, he wonders what this means for Ye Xiu’s relationship with his sect. He’s not blind; he’s noticed the burgeoning tension—they all had.

Hundred Blossoms would be like the Jiang Sect - EE shows up with an army, Hundred Blossoms is razed to the ground, all of its disciples killed - only 2 survivors: Zhang Jiale and Sun Zheping - szp loses his golden core (or has it weakened bc of qi deviation induced by sx), tho, and unlike wwx, he can’t exactly hide it or make up for it - so, like his hand injury forced him to retire and no longer be a pro player, here, he can no longer be a cultivator. he disappears, bc losing a golden core is traumatizing + he’s just dead weight now and doesn’t want to drag down zjl now that they’re in the middle of a War

Zjl’s not jc, doesn’t burn and burn with hate and anger - he can’t single-handedly revive his sect - Hundred Blossoms is no longer one of the Major Cultivation Sects, are decimated by the burning. eventually zjl joins Tyranny and becomes one of Tyranny’s Four Heavenly Kings

Samsara was originally a minor sect, but they grew to prominence during the war, and would take hundred blossom’s place as a Major Sect

Bc honestly, the fact that Jiang Cheng was even able to revive his sect at all, nevermind making it remain a Great Sect, is nothing short of astounding. Sure, the war probably helped with the recruitment, but still. And anyway, zhang jiale’s not a leader the same way jiang cheng is

Zhang Jiale’s pretty much running on spite and revenge during the war, using the singular goal of taking EE down to distract himself from his grief and his feelings of abandonment from Sun Zheping leaving. And he’s damn good, earns himself a reputation and a name during the war. And he’s doing okay for a while, rebuilds Hundred Blossoms, but it’s never what it once was. All those generations of knowledge, of cultivation forms and traditions—lost. And he’s only twenty-four years old and running a sect by himself, all his friends dead or in other sects, and the only one’s left from the remnants of what Hundred Blossoms once was are Tang Hao and Zou Yuan and he can’t burden them with his troubles, they’re children, and the pressure keeps building and the burden grows ever-heavier, until the days comes where he just. Can’t do this anymore. It’s too much pressure, too much stress, and he’s never been meant to be sect leader, had always thought that he’d step down when Sun Zheping did, that they’d hand over the reins to the next Blossoms duo, and certainly not on his own—he’s always thought he’d have his partner by his side—they’d promised to always have each others backs—and he aches with the knowledge that Sun Zheping had never cared for him nearly as much as Zhang Jiale cared for him. He has a duty to his sect but—he’s too weak, it’s a burden he’s crumbling/crumpling under

zjl can use a sword, obvs, but he prefers the bow - is the best damn archer of their generation

kind of like Jin Ling, now that I think about it, and how he favors a bow but is obvs good with the sword too

Tang Hao and Zou Yuan survive the massacre, by sheer virtue of not being in the sect when it happened - though, like the Wen, EE ordered the sects not to night-hunt, even in their own territory (and so pretty much every disciple was at Hundred Blossoms when the attack came), Zou Yuan was out visiting his family and Tang Hao was sent w/him - because it’s dangerous to travel alone now, and Zhang Jiale wants them to travel in pairs, at least, to be safe - they’re actually on their way back when they hear what happened

Tang Hao is furious at Zhang Jiale (and, to a lesser extent, Sun Zheping) - not for causing the attack, the way Madame Yu blames Wei Wuxian, but for not rebuilding the sect afterwards - how could you abandon Hundred Blossoms? he wants to demand. His lips twist into a sneer. Coward. — for leaving them behind and joining Tyranny

Tyranny is like Nie sect - militaristic, have been preparing for war against ee for ages. Zhang Xinjie is like Meng Yao, the ultra-capable deputy/administrator. Only, of course, w/out the whole “bastard-child” and “backstabbing” thing. zxj is as capable as meng yao, but minus the huge ambition - he’s content to remain in tyranny under hwq

hwq as nie mingjue - both super powerful and strong - the “head general” of the war/campaign

su mucheng and ye xiu as wen ning and wen qing - only, of course, ye xiu is a powerful cultivator in his own right - battle/war god - plus, they both clearly defect early on, tired of ee’s posturing and bullshit and arrogance. this is not the sect they once knew. muqiu wouldn’t want them to stay and let ee continue to commit their atrocities

“We’re leaving, Ye-ge,” Su Mucheng says, resolute. “I know you love Excellent Era, but this is not the sect we once knew.”

She expects resistance, protest, because EE is where it all began, is what Muqiu died for, and the sect holds Ye Xiu’s loyalty fast, but—

Ye Xiu doesn’t. Dips his head, and says softly, “I know.”

They leave the sect that night.

They don’t tell Tao Xuan, because he would try to stop them. Not that he could have, not when Ye Xiu’s Head Disciple and the best cultivator in the sect, but if he set the rest of the cultivators on them, it would wear Ye Xiu down. And, neither of them want to leave with the broken and injured remains of those they were once loyal to lying behind them. There’s time to fight EE later; now, a quiet exit is infinitely preferable.

Or maybe instead, Tao Xuan still kicks out Ye Xiu - “Ye Xiu disappears in the second year of the war” - ooh, a disappearance, and then han wenqing and su mucheng look for him, just like wwx’s three-month disappearance and how lwj and jc looked

And then when they find him again, he’s cultivating differently - figure out a way to transfer the whole unspecialized/Lord Grim thing - maybe it’s sort of like wwx’s demonic cultivation?

Maybe in this world, Ye Xiu’s losing credence/respect from EE because he keeps stepping in when they act against the other sects, because Ye Xiu’s a good person — for all that he bullies people shamelessly in glory, I highly doubt he’d do the same if it meant their deaths for real - because that’s not shamelessness, that’s cruelty - ex in the Indoctrination, Liu Hao’s in charge of them, like Wen Chao, but Ye Xiu keeps popping in, and stops him from going too far (i.e. branding anyone or other permanent injury)

ee falls, ofc, but it’s still a bloody war

hwq/yx is like lwj/wwx - ye xiu def is as oblivious as wei wuxian, plus just like wangxian, hanye has that whole everyone-thinks-they’re-rivals/enemies/hate-each-other thing going on

They meet when they’re both head disciples of their respective sects, at the discussion conference hosted by Excellent Era.

Han Wenqing fights using a saber, straightforward and blunt

only, no internment camps, or if they do happen, it’s not on the orders of any of the major sect leaders

Not rlly sure how Tiny Herb fits in here, but rest assured, they aren’t as corrupt as the Jin

After the war, the EE land is given to yx, and he creates a new sect - Happy

Huang Shaotian adopts Lu Hanwen, a war orphan, after the war - kind of like how lwj takes in sizhui, except ywz would be the wwx in this scenario - minus the whole ostracization and death thing, of course. lhw adores hst and absolutely always listens to ywz

Of the juniors - lu hanwen of blue rain (as lan jingyi maybe), gao yingjie + liu xiaobie + qiao yifan - yifan as zizhen, who’s not as powerful as the others but is still damn good - plus, they’re both very sweet; gao yingjie as sizhui, very polite, so that leaves liu xiaobie as jin ling - haughty but insecure

and yeah that's it. still working on the who yuhuang and blossoms duo threads. kind of got stuck halfway, so i figured i might as well post my au notes in case i never end up posting the actual story

this fic has a somewhat unique lwj since the canons are blended and I do really like him except I think being suicidal is just fundamentally not part of who he is as a person. I can't really explain why but even given the grief of losing wwx I don't think that was something he ever considered. he had lsz to protect and cherish as part of wwx's legacy but if there was no lsz...idk maybe he wouldn't have stayed with the lans but he would have kept championing wwx's legacy and doing the work for as long as he could. joylessly, and alone, and perhaps more dutifully, but he WOULD do it.

and I feel that this is significant not just on a character level but on a thematic and emotional one as well bc in a lot of ways lwj IS the hope of the story and one remaining to wwx when all else is lost so creating this new characterization for him seems needlessly bleak and ooc and also just contrary to the narrative itself when he literally has to be there and be reliable and be okay for wwx to even have his happy ending

oh and now that I think of it - he also didn't think wwx was entirely lost. he literally knew his soul was either still out there or not as rest and he was searching like a son of a bitch for it. and he would have waited for wwx forever! he would have waited forever

MDZS Omegaverse where it is considered socially unacceptable to flaunt your status. Sometimes word gets out and your reputation is affected by what your status is (Omega males have their reputation harmed by being seen as weak and submissive, Alpha females called domineering ballbusters..but in a move, I have never seen done before: Alpha males are not considered the ideal. Male Alphas make good soldiers but tend to be hotheaded and arrogant and thus not in line with (what I understand of) Confucian Values. Omega Females are considered “the perfect status” for a woman, with Beta’s being acceptable. (Btw: I say all males can impregnate + Alpha females, and all females can be impregnated + Omega males)

(Beta -> Alpha -> Omega for males and Omega -> Beta -> Alpha for females to make it easy to remember)

The only people who are supposed to know your status for certain are your siblings, your parents, your spouse, and your children.

WWX has been an Omega since the beginning. His status got out at some point probably some point before the Sunshot Campaign or shortly after he returned from the Burial Mounds. It was part of the smear campaign against him (and certain parties JGS wanted to...well...forcibly mate WWX to make him submit and be controlled by them) the “I gave birth to A-Yuan” Joke is a bit more self-deprecating in this version (also, since I usually see people saying CSSR was an Omega, no. She was a Beta. WCZ, however, WAS an Omega!)

LWJ is an Alpha but many people believe him to be a Beta due to how perfect and controlled he seems (the Alpha-ness only really comes out a bit on the battlefield and a lot in bed). Literally, no one knows this. Even WWX probably doesn’t find out until their buddy cop road trip is almost over!

JC is an Alpha (one of the reasons he and LWJ don’t get along. Alphas are instinctively territorial and of course, JC knows WWX is an Omega). This was one of the things that he and his mother (also an Alpha) fought over. He’s protective of his Omega brother and she hates him. But also when an Omega is better than you, you get the shame and verbal abuse much worse.

JYL was a Beta. Perfectly acceptable for a woman, but not perfect...seen as kinda boring.

JZX was born an OMEGA (actually I headcanon while JGS is an Alpha ALL of his children are Omegas), however I headcanon that ABO!JZX is trans status (OtA) and so presents himself as an Alpha. Stereotypical Alpha cologne to confuse others, etc. So while people sometimes comment on him being “yet another arrogant alpha” he is actually pleased because at least they validate him.

Because he has two Alpha grandparents (one on each side) despite the fact that neither of his parents are one, Jin Ling is an Alpha. He’s still young and while JC loves his Alpha nephew, he worries he takes after him too much.

Nie Mingjue was an Alpha, and completely unashamed of it. It was kinda an open secret since he was like, 12.

Nie Huaisang is an Omega. Another well-known one as he lives up to the dumb useless and vapid stereotypes. His brother was furious when the rumours included some personal stories that gave evidence to support the rumours. He never guessed NHS himself started the rumours. And he continued to play it up throughout the 13 years. After all, Omegas are harmless...right?

Jin Guangyao could not afford omegan heat suppressors before the Sunshot campaign so he was also well known as an Omega. Yet another thing people would hurl slurs at him for.

LXC is a Beta. One of the reasons he is #1. He often ended up having to mediate between NMJ and JGY (in the words of LXC “I have never seen an Alpha get so violently angry at an Omega in heat before...” and before anyone accuses him of being naive, yes it was anger, Furious, in fact.)

Wen Ning is an Omega. Kinda Omega classic too. That makes his transformation into the Ghost General so terrifying.

Wen Qing is an Alpha. Again, discriminated against because of her status. She didn’t care. She loved her brother and WWX and all her family. There were a few rumours that she was the other parent of Wen Yuan (mother or “father” no one could agree)

LSZ....I’m still on the fence about tbh. I could see him as any dynamic. (I headcanon his father is Wen Xu and he’s an Alpha for sure, but A-Yuan himself? I could easily see him as a gentle Alpha, an ideal Beta or a self-confident Omega, though I lean towards Beta or Alpha)

LJY, on the other hand, is an Omega. No I do not take criticism.

OYZZ I think is either a Beta or maybe an Omega? (the Junior Quartet could possibly look like JL and his harem of Omegas to outsiders if LZS and OYZZ are Omegas lmao)

Uhh...

Yi City group?

XXC is an Omega (interestingly BSSR is an Omega as well. Considered an extreme outlier because both women and Omegas are generally thought to not be very good cultivators)

SL is a Beta

A-Qing is an Alpha

XY is either an Alpha or possibly Null (check my linked headcanon under LWJ for what Null is) idk why I just always instinctively thought of XY as Null. Maybe it’s the “completely out cast from society” and the fact that being unable to smell distress in others wouldn’t dissuade his antisocial thoughts and behaviours. And well...people wouldn’t usually show much compassion for a Null street kid. they have almost no “value” to anyone or society. So he’s even more on his own than in canon.

In which MXY is younger and remembers being WWX in his previous life. JGS first made him come to Koi tower to spite JGY, but he revealed an outstanding potential for cultivation, and soon joined the ranks as a Jin disciple, (promoted to head disciple at 15). Then he went to Gusu for yearly studies. Charming, kind and talented, it was no wonder that he was the apple of the eye of the Jin sect, and plenty young masters including a young LSZ fell in love with him, (1)

Except his heart was stolen by HGJ long ago, who recognised him as soon as they met. So they began seeing each other in secrets after misunderstandings from the past life got cleared. Until one LZS caught his father making out witth the boy he has been crushing on, the boy who's 4 years younger than he is, barely out of teenagehood. A boy who's less than half of his father's age. (2)

(LWJ was too perfect of a dad. He had to cause some kind of emotional damage)

The cruel irony of it was that Lan Sizhui had been going to Hangung-Jun to ask for advice regarding Mo Xuanyu. He had noticed the other boy wearing obvious courtship gifts. New bracelets and hair combs and even a flute made of white jade. He had gone to Hangung-Jun to ask him how he could still win Mo Xuanyu's affections when he was accepting another person's gifts.

He had let himself into the jingshi. The place had always felt like home even after he moved into the junior deciples dorms and Hangung-Jun had always made it clear he was welcomed. He should have knocked. Or at the very least called out his arrival. Maybe then Mo Xuanyu would have had a few seconds to remove himself from Hangung-Jun's lap. Or Hangung-Jun would have stopped kissing along the youths neck and making him giggle.

"Lan Zhan!" Mo Xuanyu said between his laughter. Sizhui felt sick. "Lan Zhan, you're spoiling me!"

"Not enough," Hangung-Jun had argued. He held Mo Xuanyu closer and pressed and kiss to his smiling lips.

Lan Sizhui turned and fled.

Me: Multi-generational stuff is hard with Untamed because all the adults suck. Although, it might work in this case if we had Lan Sizhui as Mirabel. Admittedly I do like the idea of WWX hiding in the walls lmao.

Wife: LSZ: "We have to get you out of here."

Me: Jiang Cheng as Pepa hahahaha

Wife: Yes! Lots of grumbling and lightning.

Me: And then Jiang Yanli would be Julieta Heals people with her cooking. Except now it doesn't make sense that Lan Sizhui is one of the kids. Also is Yu Ziyuan abuela? Yikes on bikes!

Wife: LQR?

Me: Admittedly, Lan Qiren would be a perfect abuela. But I've decided I like the idea of YZY as abuela. it gives the whole story a so much darker, nastier edge. Especially if we consider that WWX wasn't her child and she resented having to take care of him, doesn't understand why he got a gift like her two 'real' children, and then his gift turned out to be weird and ominous.

Wife: Oooooh, all those rumors that he's JFMs son. Maybe the miracle isn't about her at all. Maybe it's about him.

Me: That would make her SO MAD

Me, sidebar: I mean, okay, I get that it's a Disney movie. But can we talk about the fact that Bruno was so afraid of what abuela would do to Mirabel that he *lived in the walls for ten years*

Wife, sidebar: Yeah . . . though I also saw a compelling argument that Bruno was neurodivergent.

Me, sidebar: Which is fair. but it's also the same old narrative of "it doesn't matter if your parent/parental figure was abusive if a) they loved you, b) they had trauma of their own, c) they were doing what they thought was best for you". I just ..... really hate that narrative and would like to rewrite the story with an ending of "it doesn't matter that she was doing what she thought was best! fuck that bitch!"

Me: So is Wei Wuxian LSZ’s dad? Because that makes it a lot harder to believe that he would go live in the walls. .......also not sure who his mother would be in that theoretical arrangement. How weird would it be for him to be Wen Qing and Jiang Cheng's kid? I mean, he is a Wen. I've done weirder things.

Wife: Not that weird. But where on earth did his sweet personality come from!

Me: Torn between Isabela and Luisa. Leaning towards the former’s personality with the latter’s power. It doesn’t have to align perfectly, I don’t think. I can't figure out how LWJ would fit into all of this, though,

Wife: Hmmmm. I mean, I can easily see him falling in love with WWX when he still showed his face, but how does that help the story?

Me: Yeah. Like, if he was in love with WWX, they got married, et c .... then WWX disappeared and everyone was like "YZY finally got rid of him", how did he not murder YZY lol. I guess there's the option that LWJ went to look for WWX outside the encanto, thinking that he left altogether

Wife: Just shuffle him out of the story.

Me: But it feels so weird to separate LSZ from his parents like that! lol

Wife: Also if they are already married does LWJ really think WWX would leave without him? Also also do you think YZY would be pissed that WWX picked someone he couldn't have kids with? No new generation of miracles?

Me: You know, you might think that, but I think she'd rather not have his kids "tainting" things. His miracle was a mistake, let's not perpetuate it.

Wife: Fair. I can also sort of see JC and WQ having a bunch of kids and looking at their sleep being interrupted by another one on the way and looking at WWX and LWJ’s sad, sad baby-less faces and being like 'do you guys want this one?'

Me: Awwww, I love that idea!!!! Though again, makes it more difficult to believe that WWX would go hide in the walls. Maybe, though, if LWJ was there to take care of LSZ.

Lan Jingyi can be raised by JC/WQ, because then LSZ's lack of gift is *obviously* because they let WWX raise him and WWX has corrupted him. Which is another great reason why WWX would nope out. Maybe if he leaves the kid alone, his door will show up again.

What is the difference between sect and clan aside from the fact that sects are bloodline based? Since leader of a clan is the most capable person are clans more stronger and capable than sects? And as every disciple is treated equally, are clan members more loyal to their clan than members of the sect?

Hmm, from what I can tell and what I cam using in my fics

Sect is an organization. It collects and trains disciples, pays them, provides accomodation, food, and prestige. Sorta like a school, sorta like a company?

Clans are essentially family with extended family members - cousins, aunts, uncles, distant relatives, all related by blood and probably under the same name.

Jiang Clan with clan members like JFM, YZY, JYL, JC, leads the Jiang Sect with members like WWX and the other shidi.

There are inner and out disciples. Like among the Lans, you have inner disciples that are members of the Lan clan like LWJ, LXC, LSZ, LGY. They wear the ribbon with cloud markings

Outer members wear ribbons but without cloud markings. They are not of the clan but are the members of the sect. Su She is an example of this.

Actually, you could say Su She and WWX's status are somewhat comparable. Only WWX is brilliant enough to gain significant recognization in his sect.

Since the sects are bloodline based, it isn't always the leader who is most capable. The leader is essentially the eldest son. All the time. I think MeishanYu is the only know exception.

If the eldest son isn't capable, they may choose younger sons or maybe capable daughters. But leaders aren't the most capable. They are just born into the position. This isn't a competency-based system.

As for how disciples are treated- inner clan members get more respect. LWJ and LXC partially get their fame because of their status and birthright and partially because of their skills.

WWX is equally as capable but because of his lineage, he isn't treated equally as well. I'd say there's a big difference between how bloodline descendants are treated and how outer disciples are treated. The novel specifically mentions all kids being jolly and close during the beginning bof CR arc because they are young and don't care much for formalities.

Moreover, the youths didn’t care nearly as much about background and ancestry as the older generation, so they warmed up to each other very quickly. Within the space of a few sentences, they began calling each other “brother” and speaking without regard to etiquette.

This showcases that the older generation likes to maintain a distinction of class rigidly. It is only WWX's overall brilliance that protects him from active discrimination and even then, it isn't very effective since both YZY and LQR are perfectly content to punish him or treat him unfairly without facing repercussions.

CQL Characters as Teas I’ve Had

This started because @needtherapy knows I'm a tea nerd and wanted an idea for what tea would lwj tell wwx he is... So pick a tea that suits the characters well she basically told me... and this spiral out of control... oops. sorry not that sorry. this is another tea post no one asked for... except maybe needtherapy. but she didn’t ask for THIS MUCH of it.

Wwx: onyx -- this is a tea i got at a tea festival last year from a guy based in chicago. it’s made from a white tea cultivar but made into a black tea. it’s really yummy and pretty deep. unorthodox for sure but still rooted in tradition and well crafted.

Lwj: aged fuding silver needle white tea -- if wwx is a onyx, then lwj is the traditional tea made of the same stuff. delicious. traditional. respected.

Jc: a young sheng puer -- needs to mature a little. Astringent. Need time make the edges soften some. the astringency sometimes make me think of zidian.

Jyl: lotus scented fuzhan - mellow, smooth, round bodied and fragrant. Same feel as jyl's steadiness and kindness (fuzhuan is a heicha, same category as puer) it’s a scented tea so sometimes tea snobs will look down at it. but it’s REALLY good so their loss (i’m looking at you ep 3-27 jzxuan)

Lxc: aged white tea cake, over 25 years old. it’s respected and almost legendary but not necessarily pretentious.

Nhs: ducksh*t oolong - amazing tea. Ridiculous name. The farmer probably named the motherbush to deter buyers. kinda like nhs’ YiWenSanBuZhi title.

Nmj: muzha tieguanyin - strong flavor, took a little time to grow on me, classic though (not to be confused with anxi tgy, btw. very different teas. same cultivar though, iirc)

Jgy: hunan bloolong - this is a tea made from a cultivar usually used to make oolongs that was processed as a black. A named coined by harney and sons in nyc. While the tea might be decent and the concept good, it's inevitably tainted by the inexplicably awful naming. Just like jgy is tainted by his evil deeds even if he had lots of potential.

Jzxuan: jinjunmei - modern and well received. Quality but also very pricey. sometimes i wonder if it’s worth the price...

Lqy/mianmian: farmer’s choice baozhong -- i get mine from a shop in seattle. it’s a light oolong that’s floral and refreshing. i love this tea. i love mianmian. it’s not a particularly rare and definitely not pretentious. but it’s good and definitely one i love to drink.

Wq: there is a tea that i get from a vendor in chicago called “Black Dancong Champion” that’s made from a Mi Lan Xiang (Honey Orchid Fragrance) cultivar and allowed to fully oxidize. it’s a delicious tea that’s won best tea award at a competition before. wq is the best doctor of qi shan and definitely not 100% traditional so i think this suits her. also the cultivar has such a pretty name which also suits her.

Wn: so... this is a weird tea story but i have a tea that my dad’s high school buddy picked in yunnan. the best leaves were made into something i can’t afford. he had some cast-off leaves that he asked the tea master to process anyway. and then when we were in chongqing in 2017, he gave me about 300g of it. it’s PHENOMENAL tea but he kinda waved his hand at it saying it was second rate stuff anyway. that’s kinda what wen ning is. he’s amazing as a character -- loyal, interesting, sweet. but the cultivation world as a whole doesn’t appreciate him. it doesn’t make him any less good though!

Lsz: modern chinese lapsang suchong. The name suggests strong smoke (aka the Wens) but it's actually really soft and fruity.

Ljy: high grade jasmine green made from tender buds from an early spring harvest with jasmine flowers added and sifted out at least seven times. i love this tea even if it’s “flavored”. i like its personality!

Jl: pre-qingming dragonwell - soft green tea. maybe described as nutty in flavor? you don’t get too many brews from it. first flush (hence the early spring picking) and tender. i think in a lot of ways this tea shows how young the leaves are -- just like jl shows how young he is in many parts of the story.

Oyzz: lychee tea blended with rose buds and honeysuckle buds. He's simple but delightful. (idk if this is a blend people can buy? i take cheap grocery store lychee and blend in rose buds and honeysuckle buds i buy when i’m in china... i really like a good rose and lychee combo but it’s a bit too sharp when blended and the honeysuckle does a good job of mellowing it out... this is also the ONLY tea i blend myself.. it’s just a thing for me. idk why)

Sl: aged glutinous rice scented puer - i like the texture of the tea and i also like how it ages well.

Xxc: jinxuan/milk oolong -- a cultivar that makes a really nice round tea. it’s slightly creamy in mouth feel and scent. there are milk oolongs have have milk flavor added. THIS IS NOT THAT. This is WAY BETTER.

Xy: unaged ripe puer - some people like it i guess? idk why. seems like a bad idea.

A-qing: london fog (Earl grey latte with vanilla and sugar) -- soft and yummy but don't screw it up or it may not be good. also not actually pretentious tea.

And for the antagonists:

Wzl: twinnings or bigelow earl grey. passible. doing the minimal work to get purchased. i don’t hate it but i also don’t love it. acceptable go to in hotels and restaurants when i forgot to/can’t bring my own tea.

SuSh*t: lipton. He's not good tea. Passable cold brewed I guess.

Jxzun: instant tea mix. >.> probably flavored. i’m not sure if i would even consider it tea... (i’m thinking a beverage like crystal light peach tea. i mean, i used to drink it and i’m not gonna judge people for drinking it but it’s not really a thing i would choose to consume anymore... but i’m a tea snob now...)
