Biggest marsquake was five times larger than previous record-holder Late on the Earth night of May 4, or Sol 1222 on Mars, the seismometer aboard NASA's InSight Mars Lander detected a quake on the Red Planet, with reverberations lasting many hours. The marsquake was at least five times as large as the next largest quake recorded on the planet, according to new research published Wednesday in Geophysical Research Letters. Additional research related to the record marsquake is also being presented this week at AGU's Fall Meeting, in Chicago from 12 to 16 December and online everywhere. "This was definitely the biggest marsquake that we have seen," said Taichi Kawamura, lead author and planetary scientist at the Institut de physique du globe de Paris, France. Kawamura is co-leader, along with co-author and seismologist John Clinton at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, of the marsquake service (MQS), an international team that monitors and evaluates the seismological data recorded by the NASA InSight Mars Lander. "The energy released by this single marsquake is equivalent to the cumulative energy from all other marsquakes we've seen so far, and although the event was over 2000 kilometers (1200 miles) distant, the waves recorded at InSight were so large they almost saturated our seismometer," said Clinton. Seismology on Mars can give scientists a better idea about what lies under the planet's surface—including water—and how its crust and deep interior are structured. Like on Earth, most detected marsquakes are thought to occur due to fault movements. The largest previous marsquake, recorded in August 2021 (Sol 976 on Mars), was around a magnitude of 4.2, while the May quake had a magnitude of 4.7. (marsquake magnitudes are comparable to those of earthquakes.) "For the first time we were able to identify surface waves, moving along the crust and upper mantle, that have traveled around the planet multiple times," Clinton noted. This paper is accompanied by two additional papers, also published Wednesday in Geophysical Research Letters, which cover the quake's surface wave paths and velocities. The waves from the record-breaking quake lasted about 10 hours—quite a while, considering no previous marsquakes exceeded an hour. It was also curious because the epicenter was close to but outside the Cerberus Fossae region, which is the most seismically active region on the Red Planet. The epicenter did not appear to be obviously related to known geologic features, although a deep epicenter could be related to hidden features lower in the crust. Marsquakes are often divided into two different types—those with high-frequency waves characterized by rapid but shorter vibrations, and those of low-frequency, when the surface moves slowly but with larger amplitude. This recent seismic event is rare in that it exhibited characteristics of both high- and low-frequency quakes. Further research might reveal that previously recorded low- and high-frequency quakes are merely two aspects of the same thing, Kawamura said. The new research is the first to describe and analyze the data from this large quake, which were released by the Mars Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) data service, NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) and the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), together with the MQS catalog, in early October. InSight is thought to be near its operational end because dust has progressively covered its solar panels and reduced its power during the four years since its landing in November 2018. "We are impressed that almost at the end of the extended mission, we had this very remarkable event," Kawamura said. Based on the data gathered from this quake, "I would say this mission was an extraordinary success," he continued. Kawamura said this publication is the first of a number of papers, both from his team and from partners, including NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, ETH Zurich, France's National Centre for Space Studies and UCLA that will be published in AGU's special collection on the event. Just as seismological research helps geologists learn about the evolution of Earth, this kind of data can help planetary scientists understand more about the evolution of the Red Planet, Kawamura said. Transit Ketu conjunct Scorpio Season -The Sacrificial Pyre

The end of 2021 carries with it extremely intense planetary energies, as the transiting planets in Scorpio will consecutively be joining transiting Ketu. That marks a time of fast, sudden transformations, especially for those with personal planets and chart points in Fixed Signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius).

Ketu remains in Anuradha Nakshatra, between 10 and 5 degrees Scorpio. Anuradha is a Saturn ruled Nakshatra, adding a karmic undertone to all the spiritual transformations we will be experiencing. It is a time of leaving behind karmic burdens related to the house, that Scorpio is occupying in your chart relative to your Ascendant sign. There will be a large focus on tension release and letting go of illusions, that are no longer constructive in the creation of the holograph of our physical reality.

Ketu is the energy of spiritual detachment from situations in material reality, that is orchestrated for our highest good. Ketu represents the process of shedding the superficial layer of things, that we let go of in our own best interest. However, the point of Ketu is not to hurt us or deprive us of anything, but to refine our experience on the material plane by removing excess from our lives. It is a common misconception that Ketu in our charts deprives us of all the things signified by our Ketu placement. Ketu is the spiritual perfectionist. It will make sure we don't settle for anything less than is necessary for our highest good. As a result, a transit period dominated by Ketu is all about letting go of the wrong things in our lives for the one and only one reason - that it is high time we got something better for ourselves.

This Ketu in Scorpio cycle occurs in several stages:

1. Venus in Scorpio was accompanying Ketu throughout most of October. The energy release occurred when it comes to our relationships, the physical aspect of our life, financial matters. I have seen people move houses, quit jobs. I had the experience of leaving behind the apartment, where I was raised since I was 6. Nevertheless, it was more of a preparatory energy, due to Jupiter still being in Capricorn at the time. This transit was setting the stage for the next phase, by realigning the necessary physical circumstances for the further transformation to occur in the next stages.

2. The second stage started in mid-November and will last till mid-December. It is marked by Mercury and Sun in Scorpio aspecting Ketu. It is a stage of the beginning of forward movement due to Jupiter moving out of debilitation into Aquarius, squaring Mercury in Scorpio. The added fuel of Jupiter, that was lacking before in the previous stage moves things forward from preparation towards action. The purpose of this stage is to release us from all situations, that are not in alignment with our Dharma (Sun). This is a very good period for resolution of past conflicts, that we felt were blocking us on our way to fulfilling our destiny. The Mercury aspect also helps us learn and gain better mental awareness of our spiritual progress.

3. The final stage is starting on the 6th of December and leading into the beginning of 2022. This is the most intense manifestation of this transit, as Mars in Scorpio will join with Ketu. Both Ketu and Mars are traditionally associated with Scorpio, making it an extremely powerful transit with both placements in a ruling/exalted sign. Mars also shares the fiery nature of Ketu. Expect sudden events during that time, final endings and new beginnings. This transit illuminates the process of burning with the righteous fire of spiritual transformation. Mars rules our spiritual direction, and with Ketu aspecting it, we will transform and surrender all the elements on our path, that prevent us from going down our unique Soul Path.

Energy Update: December 2021

December is an “8” Universal month [12 (December) + 5 (2021) - 17 = 1+7 = 8] in a “5” Universal year (2+0+2+1=5). We have come to the last month of the year with our frenetic fast-paced 5 energy and we are now integrating the lessons of the year to make space and (hopefully) move on by the beginning of January. The 8 energy is associated with the infinity sign and the Ouroboros - it has neither beginnings nor ending but is in a constant state of movement. You can expect December to fluctuate quickly between the highest highs and lowest lows - if you feel this way throughout the month, know that you are right on time.

This energy is further accentuated by the astrology of the month: we have four planetary shifts (the Sun and Mercury in Capricorn, Mars into Sagittarius, and Jupiter into Pisces, a personal planet (Venus) retrograde, the shifting of the guards as our lunar nodes moves from Gemini- Sagittarius into Taurus-Scorpio and the final square between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus. That’s a lot for one month! Hold onto your butts, we are in for the ride of the year.

Depending on your personal numerology, birth chart, and personality in general you may love or hate the 8 energy. The 8 is very associated with karma - in order to harness the energy of the 8 you have to let go and have faith in the lessons that unfold. Karma is often misunderstood as “What Comes Around, Goes Around” and that is an oversimplification that can really trip you up when managing the energy of the month. While it is true that the infinite nature of 8 energy means that all soul lessons will return to you until you have concurred them, it is a reminder that karma is personal and that, no matter how much we may wish, we have no control over the karma of others - even our most important “Others.” We are each on our own evolutionary path as dictated by the moment of our birth and no matter how well we know somebody, they will always remain a mystery.

As the energy of our fixed square between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus weighs us down we may feel overwhelmed and it would be easy to attempt to rid yourself of it by passing the weight of your lessons onto an/other but this is a month where it is imperative that you learn to shoulder your own burdens. Beware or projections - what are you blaming on an/other that is truly a result of your own karma that needs addressing? Any time that the lunar nodes switch signs, we all have to come up against our greater life lessons. If this scares or worries you, it is a sign that you have some work to do - get to it. To quote Karen Kilgariff of “My Favorite Murder Fame “You can run away all you want, but you will still be you.”

2021 has been a challenging year - our ongoing Saturn-Uranus square on the fixed axis has been showing up to highlight the areas in life that must be broken down and recycled that we can all move on into a new and better future. This is our Force Paradox: Saturn in Aquarius is the immovable object and Uranus in Taurus is our Unstoppable Force. Some part of each of our lives has been caught in the vice of pressure in-between. Though it is difficult for anybody to manage this much pressure, it is worth remembering that pressure makes both diamonds and oil, two of the greatest commodities of the modern world.

These kinds of changes don’t happen overnight and for many, 2021 may have felt like a year of stagnation or constant obstacles. This was very out of alignment with the “5” energy which is impatient and restless - if this is coming up for you, know that the shifting of energy of December will open great pathways if you can just hold on for a few more breaths. We are almost to the finish line. December is a great month to mine your past for what is worth carrying with you into 2022 and beyond - what is worth keeping in your life? What do you need to let go of? Watch for the things that you are holding onto out of fear of the unknown - what you put down now will inevitably make space for greater things in your future.

We begin the month of December in the eclipse gateway (the two weeks between the lunar eclipse on 11/19 and our solar eclipse on 12/4) - this energy will amplify and accentuate the pressure exerted by our Saturn-Uranus square. Our solar eclipse in Sagittarius is the last eclipse on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis which has been highlighting the dichotomy of truthfulness vs. lies both in our external and internal lives. The unfortunate reality is that many people live lives entirely built upon lies - both lies that they have told themselves and lies that they have told others. These falsehoods are coming due. We are being asked to step authentically into who we really are - not who society has taught us to be, not who are parents have taught us to be, not who our Others want us to be - who we were born to be.

Depending on where you are on your personal journey, this may feel like a destructive storm or a homecoming - acknowledge this truth and try to integrate it into your understanding of yourself and your path. It’s okay to not be where you want to be yet - what is important is to be truthful in your self-analysis during this time. If you are living in a state of denial, you will never make the changes that lead to self-alignment. Our solar eclipse on 12/4 is a moment to make a clean break for the parts of you that you have created to appease others or mindlessly “fit in” - Sagittarius is a sign associated with radical freedom, now is the time to embrace yours.

These lessons will be intensely personal as Venus has already entered the shadow of her retrograde on which begins on 12/19. She will be moving backward from 26-11 degrees through the sign of Capricorn highlighting the ways in which we seek to control rather than let our lives unfold, especially around the Venusian portfolio of love, relationships, and money. Capricorn is ruled by the God of Karma Saturn which is very at odds with the needs of love, relationships, and money to flow. Expect conflicts to arise in your personal relationships and in the workplace around these themes through Venus’s retrograde cycle which will continue all the way through to 3/01 when she finally exits her post-retrograde shadow.

It is worth noting that Venus will retrograde in almost exact conjunction with our planet of death and extreme change, Pluto which is a strong indicator that a drastic change in the ways in which you view some Venusian aspects in your own life. Maybe you are holding onto a relationship or job with a death grip even though you KNOW in your heart of hearts that it has served its purpose and you need to move on. Or, you need to completely reinvent the way in which you think about/interact with love or money.

Here again, you see the energy of December playing out and amplifying three times over. Our Saturn-Uranus square is breaking down the outdated things in our lives, our eclipse season is forcing us to become more honest about who we really are, and the Venus retrograde cycle is leaning heavily into the energy of Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto in Capricorn’s energy played heavily into the cardinal energy of 2020 that instigated this breakdown/break-up cycle. Trust what is coming up for you. If it isn’t working yet - if it hasn’t worked through all of the past two years - that is likely either a sign that you need to let it go or radically transform. The choice, of course, is ultimately up to you.

As Mars, the planet of action, moves into Jupiter ruled Sagittarius, he will immediately form a conjunction with our South Node on 12/13. Again, we see a sign that we need to let go of the past (action = Mars, the past = the South Node) to embrace greater freedom (Sagittarius) for ourselves and all of our others. If you are prone to reaching for control when things get rough, make a game plan to avoid these actions because it is highly contraindicated during this month. Nobody wants to get told what to do during the best of times and these are not the best of times. This is your cosmic reminder that your Others are also living through this intense astrological upheaval - how can you give them the space to grow into who THEY need to be?

That will be one of the big flexes of December - to grow your own way while letting your Others grow their own way. Even if it appears that they are growing away from you. Our vision may be clouded during the Venus retrograde cycle as she makes a number of sextiles to Neptune in watery Pisces. Beware of your desire to dictate how your others need to grow or evolve - their path is their own. This will hit especially hard for people who experience codependency themes in their own lives - see this as a chance to rework your own patterning so that you can show up better for your Others in the future.

As we move into the new year we will be stepping into “6” universal energy (2+0+2+2=6) - this energy will be good for mending bridges, reestablishing closeness of all kinds, and connection with chosen family - use this last month of the year to work on the ways that you bring toxicity to the table rather than love so that you can show up better in the future. As the holidays bring up old family dramas and repeating cycles, learn into the Sagittarius drive to learn from your past rather than repeating it. We were all raised by imperfect human beings - another big flex this month will be to identify the unhelpful traits that we picked up from our childhoods (signified, again, by the South Node) and let them go once and for all.

Or at least begin the process of releasing them by Naming them. Here again, I will refer to the nature of the retrograde cycle. In the pre-shadow, we fall into a hole that we did not see. During the retrograde cycle, we see the hole but we (most likely) fall into it anyways. During the post-retrograde cycle, if we’ve been doing the work, we see the hole and know how to avoid it. Depending on your personal journey and self-awareness, this cycle can take one retrograde cycle or many. The deep lesson here is that each time you encounter that hole, you have the chance to recognize it and walk around it.

As this process unfolds this month, give yourself the benefit of the doubt, as much kindness as you can muster, and practice your very best self-care. When times get astrologically intense, it is wise to wake each morning and ask yourself: what do I need today? Have I drunk enough water? Did I go outside? Did I remember to take my medications? Do I need more sleep? Do I need less sleep? Where am I letting my shadows control me? Am I being authentic to myself? The evolution of the self is an ongoing and never-ending process, pat yourself on the back for how far you’ve come - the holes that you now avoid - and take another step forward, no matter how small.

Dear Cosmic Community, 2020 has been a year of ‘profound change’ – within all of our lives. Indeed, it was always going to be. The new energy decade of 2020-2030 will see more change in 10 years than we’ve known in the past 10,000 years. My previous blog post details why this is. And as we look towards the final months of 2020 and into the new year of 2021, that ever-changing landscape is set to continue, with some profound astrological markers, opening the way for an awakened humanity to evolve – together.

Before I begin looking at the deeper meaning behind some of these major astrological happenings, there are 3 focal points to consider.

When you follow these practices, the path ahead ‘becomes easier’ and any upcoming changes will enhance your life experience.

Seek Beauty Within All – When you look for what is good and true within everything you see, hear, feel, touch and intuit, you increase your vibration. You’ll fill yourself up with high-frequency, ‘self-empowered’ energy. This means that when any challenge comes your way (as it will) you can respond from a strong, wise and assured view point. When you’re filled up with lower level negativity, seeking what’s wrong instead of what’s good in life, you’ll weaken your ability to respond and will ‘react’ instead, making decisions that dis-empower and pull you down. And so, let’s look at some of the major astrological happenings for the remainder of 2020 into early 2021 and the deeper messages behind them…

The Cosmic Rectangle – September 2020. This is a planetary alignment that sees Earth placed in the centre of a giant rectangular formation, created by the overlapping energetic lines of the planetary bodies. This formation will help us to see the myriad of life ‘options’ that are actually available to use in 2020 and beyond. It extends your ability to see what’s around you, from all angles, all at once. This assists with creating an integrated spiritual and physical human. I see many souls deepening their understanding of who they are in September, with an ability to live their truth.

7 Planetary Retrogrades will also occur in September 2020. A retrograde occurs when a planetary body appears to be moving backwards around the Sun, when observed from Earth. It doesn’t actually move backwards, but it appears to from Earth, due to our relative positions moving in an ever-changing cosmic dance around the Sun. With Jupiter, Pluto, Chiron, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Mars all in retrograde for a period in mid-September, the globe will be taken back over old ground. This is where focal point 2 (that I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post) comes into play. You may feel like you’re not moving ahead and are just reliving your past, but this is not so. You’re simply being asked to observe your old patterns, so that you can improve upon them going forward. And this is the key in working the retrogrades to your advantage. This will be tricky energy for some to navigate, especially if they have no understanding of cosmic energy and its impact on our lives.

The Three Super New Moons – Beginning in September 2020 and then continuing in October and November, we will have three Super New Moons in a row – signalling our movement out of the 2020 energy fabric, as we begin to weave the picture of what our 2021 will look like. A Super New Moon occurs when the Moon is new and is also at its closest approach to Earth all month. The first Super New Moon in September is the door opener on three months of accelerated newness. Much can and will change in your life (for the better) from September until the end of November. This is where focal point 1, from the beginning of this blog post, comes into play. Seek the beauty in your life. Emit it from within you and find it outside of you. Look for it in every situation in your life – you can do this. This will make all the difference in how well you navigate and experience the final months of 2020 in your power.

Mercury Direct on ‘the day’ of the US Elections – I mention the US elections, as many in our community of light are interested in this ‘once in 4 year event’ that does have such a profound impact, not only on the US, but also on the globe. The lead-up to November 3, 2020 sees two Super New Moons occurring and between 7 and 5 planetary retrogrades. So, we will have one cosmic influence asking us to seriously address our past and another to optimistically address our future. And with postal voting set to be huge in the US for this election, this will effect voting preferences. Again this is where focal point 2 (that I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post) comes into play. Rather than becoming angry or confused about the past, or wishing that you were back there and not where you are today, observe it instead. From careful observation comes a progressive life view that you can then take forward to effect great positive change. In the lead-up to the election Mercury will be in retrograde and this can cause create some uncertainty, as to which way the election results will go, Mercury influences all communication and messages, electronics, the Internet and the electrical charge within us all. There will be varying poll results, and views from day to day, right up until the actual day of the election – counting could also be delayed. Which is interesting because, by the afternoon on November 3 (in the US) Mercury will have just moved direct, before a final result is announced. That is good news for the eventual clarity of results. There will also be a Blue Full Moon only days before the election, just as Uranus makes it closest approach to Earth all year. Uranus causes us to break out of old patterns in an unexpected and often-surprising way and the Blue Full Moon (the second Full Moon in a month) will demand that the old completes in a grand way. Over these final days before the election, over-blown and ever-changeable energy will be present. Do your best to focus on the bigger positives for our globe over the next 4 years and that we’ll experience a smooth transition, that is respectful and all-inclusive of the wise beings of the light that we are.

The Final Eclipses of 2020 – Beginning in late November and continuing through until almost the end of December, we’ll close the year with the energy of radical change, similar energy with which we began 2020. The final eclipse season for 2020 will be intently felt. In late November, there’s a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, and then in mid-December, a Total Solar Eclipse on the New Moon, just before Chiron moves direct. This Total Solar Eclipse is one of the final cosmic events for 2020 that will stamp a completion (and honouring) of all events in your life from January to December. Eclipses force us to clear out what isn’t working in our life in favour of what is. My advice is always the same during Eclipse Season – ‘do your work and make your changes’ each day. Don’t wait for the actual eclipses to make the radical changes for you – as they turn out not be what you desire’. You can zip up in evolutionary knowing in the final two months of 2020 with the ever-useful, uplifting energy of The Eclipses.

The Great Jupiter/Saturn Conjunction in Aquarius 2020 (an influence into 2021) – On the Solstice in December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn will meet in the zodiacal sign of Aquarius, known for its progressive energy and bringing forth of societal change that focuses upon ‘we instead of me’. Saturn is a slow mover and takes almost 2.5 years to cycle through each sign of the zodiac and will transit Aquarius until 2023. This is why it takes almost 30 years to return to the same position as the day you were born, known as your Saturn Return (a time of great awakening and deepening in our lives every 28 – 30 years). Jupiter will transit Aquarius for just over 12 months until December 29, 2021. Jupiter takes just over 12 years to cycle through the entire zodiac and it last transited Aquarius from 2009 – 2010. I’ve mentioned previously that the period of 2010 – 2020 is what has prepared us for 2020-2030 and the biggest shift in 10,000 years Indeed, the years of 2009 – 2010 have been what has prepared us for entry into The Aquarian Era of Light, which cosmically kicks-off on The December Solstice 2020, with Jupiter and Saturn both meeting in Aquarius – a great conjunction that last occurred 20 years ago in 2000.

Hello! I was wondering if you could provide an insight of what do you think is going to happen in the world with regards to coronavirus? I've read all of your vedic astrology posts and you mentioned that things should start easing off after April 22nd. Does it still correspond? Particularly for UK? Thank you.

This is a tough one because I don’t think any astrologer knows the answer to this one 100%. James Kelleher did a two-hour talk devoted to this about six weeks ago, if you’re interested in his analysis.  Things are certainly better in certain places currently, such as New Zealand. And Japan.

There are two things when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic: the actual health impact/pandemic and the social/economic ramifications. Because of that, I’m not sure if the actual health impacts are going to be longer than what we’re seeing now or if it just portends a longer economic recovery.

I’ve seen a lot of references to the sudden awareness of the coronavirus coming out of the December/January eclipse cycle last winter. It started making headlines in the news around New Year’s Day. And has obviously grown from there. The seriousness of the response seems to be tied to movements of Saturn and Pluto. Saturn moved into Capricorn on January 24th, and Pluto moved into Capricorn on February 25th.

I think I also mentioned that we have had what is called Kal Sarpa yoga running this spring. We’re currently running the last cycle of that yoga this spring from now (May 11th) until May 24th. After that, we’ll be free of a Kal Sarpa yoga until about 10-11th January 2021.

Pluto moves/retrogrades out of Capricorn on June 29th into Sagittarius, and Jupiter retrogrades/moves into Sagittarius the next day, June 30th. A couple astrologers I follow are of the opinion that restrictions will lift around these dates. Of course, that may not necessarily mean that the coronavirus pandemic is “over.” It may be lessened to some degree so that “normal life” can resume at a closer to “normal” pace. We shall have to see how life is at that point and evaluate accordingly.

One of the reasons why I mentioned April 22 was because that was the last day when the lunar nodes were in a certain placement. Rahu (north node) was in Ardra nakshatra (lunar mansion/constellation), which is ruled by Rudra a form of Shiva, and Ketu (south node) was in Mula nakshatra, which is ruled by Nirriti (an older form of Kali). The lunar nodes aren’t actually planets but shadow planets. Their effects can be hard to describe since the effects of shadows is not always clear. They’re elusive. They’re not physical objects you can touch. Rahu and/or Ketu are signifiers of viruses and bacteria. They’re signifiers of many things but that is also one of them.

Anyhow, when Rahu and Ketu are both in these two nakshatras, tragic things and/or destructive things can happen. For example, the Sept 11th attacks happened about eighteen and a half years ago when Rahu was in Ardra and Ketu was in Mula. I mentioned April 22 since Rahu moved out of Ardra nakshatra and into Mrigashira nakshatra. Mrigashira tends not to have quite the destructive and/or tragic associations with it that Ardra does. Ketu moves out of Mula nakshatra on September 19th, so perhaps things will improve more by then. My hopes at least.

Economically, it gets a bit tougher to figure out how things will go for the UK since Brexit is going on. The UK is running its Rahu-Saturn dasha (time period) until early December, so I don’t expect the economy to improve until 2021 at the earliest. The UK economy probably won’t begin to see an improvement, my guess, until Jupiter moves into Aquarius for a short period of time from April to September 2021. When Jupiter is in Aquarius then it’ll be aspecting the UK’s 2nd house, of income/money.

The possibility of another lockdown period may happen again this winter since we’ll see some of the same planetary movement that we saw this spring. Jupiter leaves Sagittarius and moves into Capricorn on November 20th. (Jupiter and Saturn also have their famed conjunction happening on the Winter Solstice in Capricorn in December.) Pluto moves back into Capricorn on December 30th. Hence, the holiday period at the end of the year may be stressful for everyone.

In 2021, we have another Kal Sarpa yoga happening from January 10th until January 24th, from February 6th until February 20th, and from March 5th to March 20th. Considering that Jupiter will be in Capricorn during that whole period until early April 2021, it looks to me as of right now that another lockdown is likely from late December until early April.

I will say that on the bright side, while Jupiter is in Aquarius in 2021, it will move into Shatabhishak nakshatra on May 22nd. Shatabhishak means “possessing/requiring a hundred physicians,” and its shakti/power is the power of healing. If they haven’t figured out how to treat the serious coronavirus cases by then, perhaps during Jupiter’s time in this nakshatra they’ll figure out what it is they need to do. Or perhaps then a vaccine will be available for those who are interested in it. Jupiter will be in that nakshatra from May 22nd to July 19th. Jupiter does move back into Capricorn for a short time period in fall 2021 from September 14th to November 21st. Perhaps after November 2021 we will be finally over the pandemic and can finally move on with our lives. Due to the back and forth of planets in and out of Capricorn, it looks to be a mentally exhausting process.

Hopefully this isn’t too much of a Debbie Downer response. I’ve heard about how major a shift 2020 would be for the world from my very first Vedic astrology class back in 2008. Like, does anyone remember 2012? And freaking out about it? They made a movie with the title 2012, but I doubt it really compares to what everyone thinks about 2020 at this point, now does it?

New era of exoplanet discovery begins with images of 'Jupiter's younger sibling' Astronomers using W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawaiʻi Island have discovered one of the lowest-mass planets whose images have been directly captured. Not only were they able to measure its mass, but they were also able to determine that its orbit is similar to the giant planets in our own solar system. The planet, called AF Lep b, is among the first ever discovered using a technique called astrometry; this method measures the subtle movements of a host star over many years to help astronomers determine whether hard-to-see orbiting companions, including planets, are gravitationally tugging at it. The study, led by astronomy graduate student Kyle Franson at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), is published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. "When we processed the observations using the Keck II telescope in real time to carefully remove the glare of the star, the planet immediately popped out and became increasingly apparent the longer we observed," said Franson. The direct images Franson's team captured revealed that AF Lep b is about three times the mass of Jupiter and orbits AF Leporis, a young sun-like star about 87.5 light-years away. They took a series of deep images of the planet starting in December 2021; two other teams also captured images of the same planet since then. "This is the first time this method has been used to find a giant planet orbiting a young analog of the sun," said Brendan Bowler, an assistant professor of astronomy at UT Austin and senior author on the study. "This opens the door to using this approach as a new tool for exoplanet discovery." Despite having a much smaller mass than its host star, an orbiting planet causes a star's position to wobble slightly around the center of mass of the planetary system. Astrometry uses this shift in a star's position on the sky relative to other stars to infer the existence of orbiting planets. Franson and Bowler identified the star AF Leporis as one that might harbor a planet, given the way it had moved during 25 years of observations from the Hipparcos and Gaia satellites. To directly image the planet, the UT Austin team used Keck Observatory's adaptive optics system, which corrects for fluctuations caused by turbulence in Earth's atmosphere, paired with the Keck II Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera 2 (NIRC2) Vector Vortex Coronagraph, which suppresses light from the host star so the planet could be seen more clearly. AF Lep b is about 10,000 times fainter than its host star and is located about eight times the Earth-sun distance. "Imaging planets is challenging," Franson said. "We only have about 15 examples, and we think this new 'dynamically informed' approach made possible by the Keck II telescope and NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging will be much more efficient compared to blind surveys which have been carried out for the past two decades." The two most common ways of finding extrasolar planets involve observing slight, periodic dimming of the starlight if a planet happens to regularly pass in front of the star—like a moth spiraling around a porch light—and measuring minute changes in the frequencies of starlight that result from the planet tugging the star back and forth along the direction to Earth. Both methods tend to work best with large planets orbiting close to their host stars, and both methods are indirect: we don't see the planet, we only see how it influences the star. The method of combining direct imaging with astrometry could help astronomers find extrasolar planets that were hard to find before with other methods because they were too far from their host star, were too low mass, or didn't have orbits that were edge-on as seen from Earth. Another benefit of this technique is that it allows astronomers to directly measure a planet's mass, which is difficult with other methods at wide orbital distances. Bowler said the team plans to continue studying AF Lep b. "This will be an excellent target to further characterize with the James Webb Space Telescope and the next generation of large ground-based telescopes like the Giant Magellan Telescope and the Thirty Meter Telescope," Bowler said. "We're already planning more sensitive follow-up efforts at longer wavelengths to study the physical properties and atmospheric chemistry of this planet." WINDS OF CHANGE: 2020 FORECAST 

2020 will be a turbulent year to say the least   It is a year of change, missteps, and retrogrades.   Nothing that is planned beforehand will be cut and dried. Difficulties, obstacles and delays will block progress, because there are “loose ends” that need to be secured before movement forward can occur.

The first Lunar Eclipse in Cancer, January10th, is a sign to get rid of emotional baggage, towards people and situations that are causing stagnation.  This is followed by the Super Moons in Virgo, March 9th, then again in Libra April 7th, directing each person to look at work, service to Self and others, personal health and well-being, , getting rid of unhealthy habits and people that cause stress., endings of some type in this area will occur.   All forms of partnership will be highlighted by Libra Super Moon.    There must be balance, with everyone on the same page, otherwise these partnerships whether personal or business won’t work and may end with this Full Moon/Super Moon.

the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius, December 14th,  is a sign that this is a time for growth, expansion, justice and truth to begin anew.  Depending on the outcome of the election, this could be a good thing.  Either way it is a time to move forward with a brighter outlook for 2021.

From February 16th - November 14th, there will be multiple planets in retrograde.    This lays the groundwork for a very confusing, turbulent, inconsistent period where mistakes will be made, promises broken and words said that have irreparable consequences.  Having to go back over things, deal with people  from the past will be an issue.   Three steps forward, two steps backward will be energy of this cycle. Mercury retrograde in Pisces, February 16th - March 5th, indicates illusion and delusion,  people from the past who are not who they appear to be, resurface.   The chance of giving people qualities they don’t have is very high.  Great time for creating music, fashion, videos, anything of a visual nature.  Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, March 5th - 10th, is a time for uniqueness to shine and ideas that are ahead of their time.   Friendships/relationships could go through a difficult time, as the need for independence will be strong. A  period to trust intuition.  Mercury retrograde in Cancer, June 18th - July 10th, indicates emotions/feelings being protected , a focus on the home, family and foundation of life.   Consider the changes that need to be implemented.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, October 14th -28th, isn’t a good time to be too trusting. of people that haven’’t proven their worth/value.  Trusting instincts will protect against those who are undermining and would sabotage plans if given the opportunity.   Good for rejuvenation/regeneration of the physical body.     The last Mercury retrograde in Libra, October 29th -November 2nd, presents a chance to heal partnerships of all forms and relationships.  Although people from the past may temporarily return, but nothing much will have changed.     With Mercury retrograde in particular, travel, technology will be fraught with problems, difficulty, delays and documents should not be signed during this transit.  

One of the extra retrogrades this year is Venus in Gemini May13th - June 25th, but enters Gemini April 4th.  Partnerships personal and business started in this cycle will not be build on a strong permanent foundation, even more so when the retrograde begins.  Not a good time for commitment.  Keep things light without too much expectation as promises could be broken.    Venus also rules money, material possession, self-worth and personal resources, therefore there will be mishandling and misinformation all centered around these particular topics.

The second extra retrograde is Mars in Aries (its ruler), September 9th - September 14th. but enters Aries June 29th.     This cycle will be a “trial by fire” for many where courage will be needed to avoid the negative aspects of being tactless, blunt , aggressive and domineering coming to the forefront, which, because there are other retrogrades overlapping this one, could lead to “explosive” outcomes, maybe even war on a  larger scale.   This is not a transit to be too assertive to get one’s own way, or to use force in any way shape or form.  However, because most people aren’t self-aware enough to know better, the likelihood of this happening is pretty high.    This will be a serious time of “testing” and those who have the courage to walk through the “fire” and not get burned by it, or allow it to spread indiscriminately, will be the ones who “pass” with flying colors.    Interestingly enough Mars and Mercury will be retrograde during the election in November, so “fireworks” can be expected.

The big change of 2020 is Saturn moving out of Capricorn for 4 months into Aquarius.    This is the beginning of a major change in how people feel and conduct themselves, as the signs of old structure, relationships, people organizations, governments  begin to fall, that aren’t progressive/humanitarian and universal in consciousness.   Saturn in Aquarius enhances a rational, inventive and original mind. Saturn will “reign in” the negative  qualities of Aquarius ,which can be rebellious, thoughtless, revolutionary and too idealistic.  If Aquarian energies are not tempered, they can do more harm than good, instead of being helpful to others and the masses.   The key is to use the intuition of Aquarius to sense and feel when a wrong path has been taken and redirect energies towards something positive.  Aquarius is the sign of the future, space travel , electromagnetic energy, genetics, scientific discoveries, unique talents and abilities, to name a few of its attributes.  Individuals with their rising sign, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter in Aquarius will be most affected by this planetary aspect, as signs of major life change become evident.

Saturn moves back into Capricorn, July 2nd - December 17th, for the last time.  This cycle will be a cleaning up of remaining karma that needs to be confronted and dealt with in order to benefit from Saturn moving permanently into Aquarius December 18th 2020 - March 8th 2023.     The Saturn in Capricorn cycle will be hard for those who think and feel there are no consequences for their actions, because those that have “escaped” will experience Natural Law/ Cause and Affect sweeping into their lives, like a heavy hammer falling on top of them, when least expected.

Joining Saturn in Aquarius in December will be Jupiter for one year.  This particular combination brings long-term opportunity and benefits from past investments, friends and previous commitments.   Good fortune comes from the magnetic charm of the Jupiter/Aquarius combination as new people come to replace old acquaintances.   Success in television, music, computers, electronics, science, any profession that requires a broader vision, is likely to happen during this Jupiter aspect. Jupiter will be in Aquarius form December 20th 2020 - May 14th 2021.

In addition to all the above  cycles Pluto still remains in Capricorn and will retrograde, April 25th - October 4th, with its usual undermining influences, plus the transformational healing aspect.     Uranus still in Taurus, retrogrades August 25th - January 14t 2021. During this time ti will be obvious that financial structures, both personal and business need to be redefined and unexpected reversal of fortune for some is likely.    Neptune still in Pisces, retrogrades June 23rd - November 298th.    Surprises are likely as the “veil” is lifted to reveal certain things that have been hidden for a while.   This is a transit where wearing “rose-colored glasses” will likely not bring positive outcomes or results.  Absolute clarity/honest, discernment is needed.   A great cycle for creating anything of a visual nature.

2020 is going to be a year to remember as many, many things are going to change, hopefully for the better.  The retrogrades are really “shadows” from the past, past karma to be looked at understood and removed, because they will continue to  follow, causing uncomfortable scenarios that will get worse until the truth of their existence is no longer feared and can be courageously eliminated.

Climate crisis ‘may put 8bn at risk of malaria and dengue’ (Guardian) More than 8 billion people could be at risk of malaria and dengue fever by 2080 if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise unabated, a new study says. Malaria and dengue fever will spread to reach billions of people, according to new projections. Researchers predict that up to 4.7 billion more people could be threatened by the world’s two most prominent mosquito-borne diseases, compared with 1970-99 figures. The figures are based on projections of a population growth of about 4.5 billion over the same period, and a temperature rise of about 3.7C by 2100. The study, led by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal, found that if emission levels continue to rise at current rates, the effect on global temperatures could lengthen transmission seasons by more than a month for malaria and four months for dengue over the next 50 years.

Slow trickle of rental aid heightens concern about eviction crisis (Washington Post) The White House, along with state and local governments, is under growing pressure to significantly ramp up the amount of emergency rental relief reaching tenants and landlords, as some economists and housing advocates say the Biden administration’s attention to the eviction crisis is coming too late. Weeks before an eviction moratorium put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expires on July 31, much of the federal aid meant to help tenants and landlords has not reached them. Many are not even aware that the assistance is available, or they continue to struggle with onerous and complicated application rules. Some programs run by state and local governments took months to get up and running. All told, Congress has appropriated roughly $46 billion for emergency rental aid. Of the $25 billion appropriated in December, only $1.5 billion had been spent on rent, utilities and arrears between January and the end of May, according to figures released Friday by the Treasury Department.

Her mission: Convince residents that, if core social and economic inequities were resolved, crime would abate and the city wouldn’t need a police department. Less than a year ago, amid massive social justice protests across the United States, the idea of fundamentally reducing the role of police rose from nonstarter to distinct possibility. Atlanta came within one city council vote of cutting $72 million from its police department. Today, however, that momentum has almost completely reversed. Ms. Bond says there has been “a doubling down on policing, increasing surveillance, and building a massive training center, which is in such stark contrast to the conversation we were trying to begin over the summer. What happened? What changed?” The simple answer is crime. Like other cities, Atlanta has witnessed a new crime wave—bad enough that one affluent part of the city is considering secession. Yet in talking to residents across Atlanta, even those sympathetic to the defund movement now say it overreached. The way forward, many say, is not in getting rid of the police, but helping them do a better job. “‘Defund the police’ was a slogan that really backfired ... because across the country—not only in Atlanta—people living in those neighborhoods who aren’t necessarily activists don’t want the police gone, especially with crime spiking,” says Ron Bayor, a historian at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “What people do want is police reform.”

Tears, prayers mark end to search for Miami condo survivors (AP) A somber moment of silence marked the end of the two-week search for survivors of a Florida condominium collapse, as rescue workers stood at solemn attention and clergy members hugged a line of local officials while many of them sobbed. The painstaking search for survivors shifted to a recovery effort at midnight Wednesday after authorities said they had come to the agonizing conclusion that there was “no chance of life” in the rubble of the Champlain Towers South condo building in Surfside. “We have all asked God for a miracle, so the decision to transition from rescue to recovery is an extremely difficult one,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news conference. The death toll stood at 54 late Wednesday. Officials said 86 people were unaccounted for, although detectives were still working to verify that each of those listed as missing was actually in the building when it collapsed.

The office is back, but it might never be the same (Washington Post) Across the country, the leaders of corporate America have begun opening their doors again at companies such as Facebook, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft, bringing the country’s white-collar workforce back to the skyscrapers, office parks and campuses that were long assumed to be the only way to corral them. But a lot has changed in the past year and a half, and offices have, too. The Washington Post spoke with a wide range of workers and companies that have begun bringing people back into their offices. Most workers described a strange office environment bearing little resemblance to the one they left behind—a world of complicated social interactions, lingering anxieties about masks and vaccinations, and simmering frustrations about inflexible work policies. Companies spoke about the challenge of getting a workforce that has grown accustomed to working from home fired up again about office culture. Only about one-third of workers—32 percent—are back in large office buildings, according to data from building security company Kastle Systems, although the numbers have been increasing in recent weeks.

World Food Programme starts distributing food in crisis-hit Venezuela (Reuters) The U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) said on Wednesday it had begun distributing school meals to children in Venezuela, where some 7 million people require humanitarian assistance after years of economic collapse in the once-prosperous OPEC nation. The WFP’s first take-home rations were distributed for children under 6 years old at some 277 schools and preschools, as well as school staff, in 25 municipalities in northwestern Falcon state, WFP said in a statement. Since Venezuela’s schools are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, parents or teachers picked up the monthly rations—which consist of 6 kg (13 pounds) of rice, 4 kg (9 pounds) of lentils, 454 grams (1 pound) of salt and one liter (2 pints) of vegetable oil—on their behalf, according to Susana Rico, the WFP’s Venezuela representative.

Japan PM Suga declares state of COVID-19 emergency in Tokyo (Reuters/Washington Post) Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga formally declared on Thursday a state of emergency in Tokyo, putting restrictions aimed at curbing coronavirus infections in place through August 22. Japan will bar spectators from all Olympic events held in and around Tokyo, organizers announced, as the state of emergency will cover the capital during the Games. Olympic organizers, working closely with the government, had announced two weeks ago that they would allow some domestic spectators to attend events. They capped attendance at 10,000, or 50 percent of a venue’s capacity, but warned at the time that they might change course if infections rose again.

Millions of Syrian civilians at grave risk if U.S., Russia fail to strike deal on U.N. aid deliveries (Washington Post) Parts of northern Syria will quickly face a massive and deadly humanitarian crisis if the U.N. Security Council fails this week to extend a resolution allowing the United Nations to deliver aid across the Turkish-Syrian border, according to relief workers, Syrian civilians and the Biden administration. The resolution, which allows the United Nations to coordinate aid shipments to Syria through only one border crossing, is set to expire Saturday. Millions of Syrians dependent on the U.N.-led relief effort would immediately be put at risk if it lapses, aid workers say. Russia has promised for nearly a year to veto any resolution allowing cross-border aid to continue, viewing its distribution to areas held by opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Moscow, as a violation of Syria’s sovereignty. The Biden administration favors expanding cross-border aid to Syria, and the debate over the resolution has emerged as a high-profile test of whether the United States and Russia, at a moment of escalating tensions, can identify issues on which to forge common ground.

Gaza reconstruction (Foreign Policy) The longer-term effects of the Israeli bombardment of Gaza in May were made clearer in a joint report from the European Union, United Nations, and World Bank released on Wednesday. The report estimated overall damages of between $290-$380 million while economic losses totaled between $105-$190 million—roughly 6 percent of Gaza’s GDP. The authors estimated that Gaza’s unemployment rate would reach 50 percent in 2021—its highest since the early 1990s—and that its economy would shrink by 0.3 percent.

Fiery explosion erupts on ship at major global port in Dubai (AP) A fiery explosion erupted on a container ship anchored in Dubai at one of the world’s largest ports late Wednesday, authorities said, sending tremors across the commercial hub of the United Arab Emirates. The blaze sent up giant orange flames from a vessel at the Jebel Ali Port, the busiest in the Middle East. Jebel Ali sits on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula and is also the busiest port of call for American warships outside the U.S. The combustion unleashed a shock wave through the city of Dubai, causing walls and windows to shake in neighborhoods as far as 25 kilometers (15 miles) away from the port. Residents filmed from their high-rises as a fiery ball illuminated the night sky. The blast was powerful enough to be seen from space by satellite. The extent of damage to the sprawling port and surrounding cargo was not immediately clear. Footage shared on social media of the aftermath showed charred containers, ashes and littered debris. Dubai authorities told the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV that the crew had evacuated in time and that the fire appeared to have started in one of the containers holding flammable material, without elaborating. The Jebel Ali Port at the northern end of Dubai is the largest man-made deep-water harbor in the world and serves cargo from the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Asia. The port is not only a critical global cargo hub, but a lifeline for Dubai and surrounding emirates.

In my last article I talked about the July 4th eclipse. We are starting to move into that energy now which is a lunar full moon eclipse on July 4th at 9:29 PM PDT. This is on Saturday night and the sun will be on 13 degrees Cancer, which is right over Washington D.C. The moon will be on 13 degrees Capricorn which is over China. This is going to be a powerful full moon and with the sun over Washington D. C. I am sure there will be more chaos caused by our leaders. Mars will be in Aries on this eclipse so please keep your cool. Mars is considered the war planet and rules anger. A week after this full moon Mars will be squaring this eclipse degree and may trigger more strong energy. In other words, the energy from the end of June until July 14 will be a very intense time period.

This eclipse is on 13 degrees. The number 13 is the number of the Goddess and the Mayan Calendar is based on the number 13. In the Mayan calendar the time bandits from Jupiter and Saturn stole time and changed the number 13 to the number 12 so they could shut out the Goddess. They even ignored the 13th sign of the zodiac which is Ophiuchus/Asclepius which is the sign of Spider Grandmother who spun her web and controlled the other signs of the zodiac until her power was taken away. On this upcoming full moon Jupiter will be on 23 degrees Capricorn and Pluto will be on 24 degrees Capricorn and they are both in a square to Eris (the goddess of chaos). Pluto rules plagues, viruses, and bacterial infections. This 24th degree of Capricorn means a woman entering a Convent. No wonder we have been shut in for such a long period of time because of the virus. People are starting to get restless and that is one of the reasons they have been demonstrating. Jupiter will be retrograding away from Pluto in mid-July so maybe the virus will slow down until November when Jupiter again conjuncts Pluto. Then around the Winter Solstice Jupiter will be conjunct Saturn in the sign of Aquarius. This is the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

The north node was in Cancer for a year and a half and in May the node moved into Gemini, which is a fast-acting sign and the demonstrations started. The north node is now on 28 degrees Gemini and the south node is in Sagittarius which is the sign of freedom. Now the north node is on the degree that means a release from unbearable pressures, freeing one for new tasks. We are at a turning point. The July 4th eclipse will be the last eclipse in Cancer for a long time. Cancer rules the home, family, and sickness. Gemini and Sagittarius rule freedom, which is an entirely different energy.

I think we will see much action from this July 4th lunar eclipse because Mars is in Aries on 4 degrees. This degree means the progressive polarization released by a sense of identification with a greater whole. Mars will be in Aries until January 6. 2021. Wow! Here in Seattle we have a new little city called CHAZ in the middle of our city. There is talk of this being taken down this weekend at the time of the full moon. Wobble of VenusVenus, the Goddess planet, finished her 8 year cycle on June 3 and now she is in a new 8 year cycle. It takes Venus 8 years to create a 5 pointed star in the heavens which forms a beautiful design.

The tribulation talked about in the Bible started on December 26, 2004 with a large Tsunami in SE Asia that killed thousands of people. The tribulation started then because the dwarf planet Eris was announced on January 5, 2005 and she is the planet of chaos. We entered the era of chaos at that time and it continues until today. There was another large Tsunami in Japan in 2010 which was very destructive and there have been many large earthquakes, hurricanes, storms, flooding and fires all over the world. The chaos continues and the chaos has built up to the breaking point where there will be change before too long because out of chaos comes a new creation.

We are now in the Great Tribulation that is talked about in the Bible. We entered this time period on May 24, 2020 when the demonstrations started because of the death of George Floyd. Now we have a combination of the virus and the demonstrations all over the world. With Mars in Aries and the south node in Sagittarius, there will definitely be people standing up and demanding their freedom. This will include black people, white people, Chinese people and everyone else in the world. We are also in the time period of “Two people will be in a field, one will be taken and one will be left.” This separation is going on right now with the virus and by people choosing which time-line they want to be on. We are at the Time of the End.

The last 3½ plus years has been very chaotic because we elected a president who was born with his Saturn on 23 degrees Cancer in an exact square to Eris on 23 degrees Aries. He is the King of Chaos. We needed someone to create this great chaos because out of chaos comes a new creation. Because he is President of the USA, he seems to affect the whole world. Jer(usa)lem has the word (USA) in it. When the Bible talks about Jerusalem and the prophecies it is usually referring to the United States.

The line-up of planets in Capricorn in January indicated it was time for governments to change. Pluto is the planet that destroys things or takes them down. Pluto also rules viruses and bacteria infections. Pluto is in Capricorn which rules governments. Pluto has been in a square aspect to Eris for a while now and that has caused the virus and the transformation of our government. Pluto is now conjunct Jupiter which is a very large planet. This energy has caused the virus to go out of control so we are all wearing masks to keep from getting the virus. Jupiter will move into Aquarius in December so the virus will probably be gone by then.

I had a dream 10 years ago that first we were sleeping and when we woke up everything had changed and there was no government and we were setting up communities of light. This will probably happen on a higher frequency earth. Maybe we will just wake up on a new earth one day or maybe we will be transported by ships. We have gone through much dark energy in the past few months and now it is time to come into the light. The next and last prophecy is the return of the ships of light and the movement to the new earth. I am almost positive this will happen before the end of this year. I can hardly wait.

Cracking the mystery of nitrogen ice dynamics on Pluto Sputnik Planitia, a basin on the surface of Pluto1 filled with nitrogen ice, displays an astonishing pattern of flat polygons separated by narrow troughs. This feature is a sign of thermal convection within the icy mass that constantly renews its surface. Until now the driver of this process was a riddle. However, in their study published in Nature on 15 December 2021, researchers from the CNRS, ENS de Lyon,2 and the University of Exeter unveil the mystery behind the formation of these structures. Despite the low level of solar radiation, the nitrogen ice here is regularly sublimated, i.e., transformed directly into gas without first becoming a liquid. This sublimation results in local cooling that causes movements in the ice layer on the scale of 100,000 years, which is comparable to the speed of tectonic plate motion on Earth. The process bears a stronger resemblance to the movement of our oceans than to the behaviour of ice layers on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. It may also occur on the surface of other planetary bodies like Triton, a moon of Neptune; or Eris and Makemake, among the largest Kuiper Belt Objects.
